golden gays Age is just A number—And “older” gAys should embrAce it.

EdITOr’S NOTE: On July 19 we published a commentary by Mike Diamond titled “Clocked.” It was a semi tongue-in-cheek look at what it’s like to get older in youth-obsessed gay New York. Diamond’s piece resonated with many of our readers. Some agreed with the author’s perspective. Many disagreed. Here, we offer an opposing opinion by Rick Schmutzler, owner of Gym Sportsbar and Rockbar, who recently celebrated his 50th birthday. t’s recently been brought to my attention that I’m old. Really old. Like duston-heels old. I’m 50. In a commentary that appeared in Next Magazine a couple of weeks ago, the author explained how, now that he’s over 30, he feels invisible and slighted by his own community. Bullshit. You’re only invisible if you want to be. And the idea that gay men are invisible is just another one of the many stereotypes that exist about what it means to be gay today. To me, the beauty of being gay is that you can be whatever or whomever you want to be. We’re the only minority that’s not based on race, religion, gender or social class. The LGBT community is spread evenly through all aspects of society and in all areas of the world.

“It’s fun to be a gay geezer these days.” Try out for one of the many gay sports leagues in the city, all of them chock-full of people 30 and up that you won’t find in the bars. Not a jock? Volunteer for any of the dozens of charities in the city. The kids at the Ali Forney Center and the Hetrick-Martin Institute are starving for exactly the kind of experience your old ass can bring to the table. I’ve heard people say that being gay is for young people for as long as I’ve been out, which for the record is since 1983. It didn’t make any sense to me then and it makes even less now. It’s fun to be a gay geezer nowadays. Older gays and the guys who love them are everywhere. Just look at Daddyhunt, DILF parties, Silver Bears, Mister and the explosion of daddy porn. Hell, half the 20-somethings in Brooklyn are working the bearded lumberjack look. They’re trying to look older, like little herds of proto-daddies roaming the streets, hoping to snag the real thing. And if you want the kids, they are out there. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve looked into a pair of 24-year-old eyes and said, “I’m just not that into you.” Personally, hooking up with someone half my age is just not really my thing. I want someone who gets my Gilligan’s Island references. So guys over 40, stop feeling sorry for yourselves! It’s a big gay world out there. Find your place in it. Whether that’s dancing shirtless on a box at five in the morning or meditating on a yoga mat in Central Park. Fly your daddy flag high. N

That fact is even truer in a city like New York, where the gay scene is as large and vibrant as anywhere on the planet. Don’t like being in a room of 25-year-olds that you have nothing in common with? Then find another bar! There are over 50 gay bars in Manhattan alone, many of them built around an older clientele, especially if your idea of “older” is 40. Don’t like bars? Join one of the several gay choruses in town. Not a singer?

It was a demon I simply had to exorcise. Now I am possessed entirely.” The edgy fan fave from the popular reality show will be in NewYork from August 811 to perform her brand-new act, Red For Filth, at the Laurie Beechman Theater. “My best friend and musical collaborator Jeremy Mikush and I used to get the cops called on us frequently during our time in Los Angeles simply because we’d stay up to all hours in our tiny apartment banging on the piano and screaming Dolly Parton, Heart and other hits of the ‘80s, ‘90s and today. [The show] will be a lot like that.“

>>> WHAT’S NEXT NOW ELIXIR LOUNGE formed at the bar’s grand opening and on August 3 Jessica Wild will be performing at the new venue as well. Sulay says she wanted to open Elixir Lounge—which is also thefirsttransgenderownedandoperatedbarinQueens—toprovide a gay venue with a wide range of events, rather than the designated gay nights at straight bars that had dominated the neighborhood scene in Astoria after Mix Café closed in February 2012. “We chose Astoria because there is a large LGBT community living in the neighborhood and there was a need for a nice place to call ‘our spot,’” she says. “We deserve to have our own venues, and feel at home.” The sultry new space is currently openTuesdays to Sundays with happy hour starting at 5pm. On Thursdays the bar hosts karaoke, Fridays is a male revue and on Sundays the bar hosts a music video request dance party. The venue is also gearing up to host a Queens Got Talent contest for singers, actors and performers with a $150 cash prize on August 11. —Will Pulos

THE MOMENT YOU STEP into Astoria’s newest gay bar, Elixir Lounge (43-01 Broadway, ElixirLoungeNYC.com), you get the sense from the deep red lighting and dark, seductive wallpaper that if they’re actually selling an elixir, it’s probably a love potion. For Marilyn Sulay, the transgender co-owner of the new venue, the bar is also a love letter of sorts to the gay community of Astoria. “What made us open Elixir Lounge was the need to have a place for us, the community in Astoria,” says Sulay. “A nice spot where we can hang out, dance, drink and spend a good time, not only on one specific night but any night we felt like going out.”At Elixir, she hopes gays come “to either have a drink, sing karaoke, watch music videos or a drag show!” With two nights dedicated to drag performances, the new lounge should be a welcome addition to the large drag community in Queens. The Haus of Mimosa will be presenting their weekly show at the bar onWednesdays, and Saturdays are set aside for rotating drag performances. ore than a month ago we sold a full-page ad and some web banner advertisements to GayCities.com for their “Most Original Stoli Guy” competition. We also wrote and published a story about what at the time seemed like a fun event. At that point several media outlets had already begun to cover the anti-gay political stance Russia had begun to adopt. Then, on July 21, Harvey Fierstein published his widely read op-ed titled “Russia’s AntiGay Crackdown.” Rumors swirled about gay boycotts of Russian products. In response, Val Mendeleev, Stoli CEO, published a statement reiterating Stoli’s support for the gay community, saying, “Stoli is very proud of its current exclusive national partnership with GayCities.com and Queerty.com in search of the Most Original Stoli Guy.” Dan Savage, however, wasn’t having any of it.“Regardless of where SPI Group’s corporate offices are located, the company is owned by Yuri Scheffler, one of the 100 richest men in Russia,” he wrote.“SPI is a Russian corporation, Stoli is a Russian vodka. And while it’s nice that SPI is willing to market to homos who are lucky enough to live in Austria, the US, and South Africa, what has SPI done in Russia?” Nothing, he argued. By Friday, the gay hive mind had taken over. The party line? “#DumpStoli.” By 11am I’d spoken with Bob Pontarelli, owner of Industry, Barracuda and Elmo, who explained that he’d heard of gay bars in San Francisco and Chicago boycotting Stoli and that although he was nervous about singling out Stoli specifically, that he wanted to lead the Russian vodka boycott in New York. Later that afternoon Boxers and G Lounge both announced they’d no longer be serving Russian vodka.

Activist Nikolai Alekseev told Gay Star News a Stoli boycott would be pointless, while Queer Nation published a statement by 23 leading Russian equality advocates supporting the boycott.

With the promotion starting up for LAdY GAGA’S third album, is anyone else out there convinced beyond any doubt that Artpop is going to be the most epically pretentious pop record of all time?

My colleagues and I then decided that Next Magazine too needed to remove ourselves from any involvement with Russian vodka brands. That meant pulling the Stoli Guy banner ads off of our website and terminating our involvement with the event (I was scheduled to be a guest judge). Then, that afternoon I read a compelling piece on Reason.com explaining why a Stoli boycott is a“terrible, bad, nogood plan.”“There’s a big Western bias in

Should you be ordering your usual Stoli and soda this weekend? That’s up to you. But singling out only one well-known brand of Russian vodka for the boycott is no better a scapegoat tactic than those the Russian government is currently implementing against its gay citizens. N

THE FINAL COUNT THE NIGHTLIFE HEAVYWEIGHTS WHO HELPED SHAPE SPLASH’S 22-YEAR RUN GIVE THE ICONIC GAY CLUB AN EPIC SEND-OFF. he countdown to Splash’s final days has begun, and while it’s an undeniable bummer that one of New York’s biggest and most famous gay clubs is closing its doors for good, owner Brian Landeche and his staff of muscle-bound bartenders, sexy go-go boys and talented DJs have no intention of going out with a whimper. The week leading up to the club’s grand finale is going to be bangin’!“We’re hoping to make people feel like anybody who’s worked here or been here or performed here can come back and either steal a bar stool or, you know, something— get a memento,” says Landeche. “We’ll bring back the DJs who have made the biggest dent and we’re hoping all of our customers will come by and experience for one last time what we all participated in.” With the news of Splash’s closing still sending shock waves through the city’s gay nightlife community, we reached out to some of those same tastemakers, promoters and DJs who have shaped the club’s parties over the years. Here, they share their memories and say goodbye to a legendary nightlife institution. —John Russell

T

LADY BUNNY “It was fantastically wild and decadent! The saddest thing about Splash closing is that Grindr and other sex apps have greatly reduced the number of gays going out. Sex was never the only reason party people used to go out. There was fashion, dancing, music, entertainment and actual conversation—remember that? The party has moved online. Bigger gay clubs aren’t doing well and this really seals the deal that New York is no longer a ruling nightlife destination.”

STEVE SIDEWALK “Having Lady Gaga perform at Splash for my birthday party on May 15 of 2008 will always be one of my favorite memories. Gaga, years later, even signed a poster for me that says ‘Sidewalk I miss you and Splash’ as she told me it was one of her favorite gay clubs. It will always be one of my favorites, too.”

MARK NELSON “I was a guest dancer the first week they opened. We watched the final episode of Seinfeld with a packed house. Broadway Bares originated there. The Splash float at Pride was always the highlight and the whole Chelsea boy phenomenon was started by Brian [Landeche] and Harry [Bartel].”

JUSTIN LUKE “BoiParty’s Campus Thursdays was Splash’s longest running weekly gay dance party and the trendsetter that established Thursday night as a mainstream gay party night. We had many an epic night there. Both Alan Picus and I are proud to have been a part of this historic venue, and wish the whole Splash team well.”

CHRIS RYAN

NATHAN WILLIAMS

“Splash will always have a special place in my heart as this was the venue that started it all for me. I remember being denied entry when I was 17 but then building one of the biggest, most successful parties in New York gay nightlife, Campus Thursdays, with Alan Picus in 2006. Splash will always remain one of my favorite venues growing up both personally and professionally.”

“Having promoted Ocean at Splash for eight years, it is more than just a club closing; it is like losing a family. Splash was the place for so long that artists from Britney to Janet to Madonna always made their way there. I will miss it, but mostly the people that made it so great.”

“QUOTED” When SiR hONEY DAVENPORT takes the stage in The Orion Experience, the new immersive intergalactic rock opera at XL Nightclub, she’ll be channeling equal parts Grace Jones, Frank-N-Furter and Beyoncé’s evil twin. “She’s an aliensorceress-vampire-sex goddess from The Garden of Earthly Delights, out to entrap the titular Orion, the love of her life,” Davenport says of her character, The Queen of White Lies. Or, more succinctly: “She’s one fierce queen—not entirely unlike myself!” Since premiering at Dixon Place last year, The Orion Experience, which features songs by the disco pop band of the same name, has been compared to The Rocky Horror Picture Show and Michael Jackson’s 3D spectacle Captain EO. “From the moment you enter, you find yourself right in the heart of the action,” Davenport says. “The show happens not just in front you, but all around you and actually within the audience itself. It’s an intergalactic, orgasmic, absolutely unique musical experience.” Orion runs through September 1 at XL, and after that Davenport has a few other projects up her sleeve. “I’m most looking forward to being back in the studio working on the re-up of Electrohoney, my band’s debut album and its attendant show, The Electric Highway.” There’s also a one“woman” show, For the Love of Honey, which she’ll be premiering later this year. Boys are made of snakes and snails and puppy dog tails, that’s what little boys are made of.’ And I burst into tears and ran away in total terror, knowing myself to be a delicate flower, definitely not made of all that gross stuff and probably aware on some level that I was a Mary in the making.”

Just like we need queer parties, theaters and galleries, we also need queer bookstores and libraries. BGSQD is holding down the fort on the literary front.” SUMMER READING: Dossie Easton and Janet W. ince settling into its temporary home at the Lower East Side’s Strange Loop Gallery eight months ago, the Bureau of General Services–Queer Division has hosted readings and events with literary luminaries like Sarah Schulman, Edmund White and Thomas Glave as well as emerging talents from all over the city. “The response to the Bureau has exceeded our expectations,” says co-founder Greg Newton. But with BGSQD’s residency at Strange Loop ending on August 31, the clock is ticking to raise the $50,000 needed to establish its own storefront. To that end, they’ll host Future Perfect, a fundraiser at the legendary Pyramid Club featuring Gio Black Peter, Penny Arcade and other downtown queer acts, on August 7. We reached out to some of the performers who’ll take the stage at the event to find out why a queer bookstore like BGSQD is so vital to New York. —JR

“Every queer city needs an intellectual center—a public space that is purely about ideas and dialogue. Otherwise we’re just a dense concentration of bars, which gets so boring so quickly.” SUMMER READING: Kelli Dunham’s Freak of Nurture

“The benefits of having a permanent physical space for the queer person to research their past, experience their present and build their future are limitless. When we feel as though we have a home, we begin to believe that we deserve one and that is what will move us forward in this country.”SUMMER READING: Pema Chodron’s When Things Fall Apart

MAX STEELE “It’s not only that rare bird—the independent bookstore—it sells and produces queer artwork from individuals and collectives at all levels and from around the world, stuff you can’t get online or anywhere else. The Bureau has also become something of a performance and meeting space, where writers and artists can show their work to an engaged, dedicated audience.” SUMMER READING: Andrea Dworkin’s Pornography: Men Possessing Women; Ann Cvetkovich’s Depression: A Public Feeling

Selena Gomez

MUSIC

NEXTMAGAZINE.COM

The Right Track When Tweens Attack By Keo Nozari he target audience for this week’s artists might be tweens and teens, but based on our Twitter and Facebook feeds we know lots of gay men of all ages are, um, excited by these acts. In fact, we wouldn’t be surprised to see some of you in the front row crying with elation just at the sight of them! You know who you are... First up, Selena Gomez. Gomez deserves extra love for being a big advocate of the LGBT community and for her outspokenness in regards to combatting gay bullying. Her career has been skyrocketing recently and it really comes to a crescendo on Stars Dance, which transforms Gomez from a teen starlet to a bona fide pop star. It’s also an impressive feat coming off her relationship with obnoxious phenom Justin Bieber—she’s definitely not being eclipsed here! The stars align on Stars Dance with a delicious, contemporary mix of EDM, dubstep, glitch pop, teen pop and hip hop that clearly takes some cues from Britney Spears and Skrillex. First single “Come & Get It” was already a runaway hit, but it’s the second single, “Slow Down”—produced by The Cataracs—that really hits it out of the park. Sure, at times the lyrics get excessively generic, but the upbeat tracks and Gomez’s undeniably likeability save the album throughout. Other standouts include the title track, “Write Your Name” (with it’s nuanced electronic textures) and “B.E.A.T.,” where she’s a more approachable Dev. Plus, we’re

T

28 AUGUST 2, 2013

betting at least one New York drag queen is gonna have a blast doing a routine to the line “I like…the beat in my face.” “Birthday” is also a standout. For the record, Gomez just had her birthday on July 22 when she turned 21. The US version of X-Factor spawned the ladies group Fifth Harmony and they’re releasing their hotly-anticipated debut single “Miss Movin’ On.” Considering the fact that the ladies won a singing competition, the very noticeable Auto-Tune at the top of the track is disappointing and distracting, but once the song settles in things get better. Reminiscent of another music competition show champ’s chart topper—American Idol winner Kelly Clarkson’s “Miss Independent”—the chorus is big and the lyrics throughout are nicely empowering for young girls: “I’m finding who I am/ and who I am is gonna be enough.” Plus, the age appropriate video is a refreshing change from some other more salacious acts out there. (Yes, we’re taking about Miley Cyrus, who is only 20 years old, despite what she may want you to think.) Finally, popular boy band One Direction has dropped new tracks. After their sophomore album slumped, the boys have already moved on to lead single “Best Song Ever” from their third album coming this fall. We can’t say it’s the best song ever—or even as good as the band’s biggest hit “What Makes You Beautiful”—but the pop-rock track should satiate existing fans and we give them props for the hysterical music video (which features Zayn in drag and Harry and Liam as overtly gay characters). And hey, it’s loads better than their competition’s single, The Wanted‘s awful “Walks Like Rihanna.” N

Woodland Creatures By John Russell he Easton Mountain retreat center in Greenwich, NY, is usually a tranquil sanctuary, a place for New York’s gay community to escape the pressures of city life and reconnect with nature. But on August 10, that serene bubble gets punctured ever so slightly when a diverse lineup of queer artists takes the stage for the annual Out in the Woods Queer Music Festival. Now in its third year, the festival doubles as a benefit for Easton Mountain’s queer youth programming. But, co-organizer Wil Fisher points out, Out in the Woods is also an opportunity for queer musical acts to come together and build a wider community. “We anticipate a lot of collaborations, people bringing up guests during their sets, bringing up different artists from other acts.” Cabaret star Justin Vivian Bond headlines the festival and Fisher says V. has also helped the organizers build a more diversely queer roster of acts. “Rather than just being gay male, it’s queerer,” Fisher explains. “We’ve had multiple trans people perform, which is pretty exciting for a music festival.” One of those performers is folk singer Namoli Brennett, a favorite of co-organizer and performer Freddy Freeman. “She wasn’t just chosen because she’s trans. She was chosen because she’s a transperson of really incredible musical quality,” Freeman says. Of course there are plenty of queers with guitars—Justin Vahala and Brett Every among them—giving the festival a crunchy vibe. “I chose Rachel Sage because she’s an award winning bisexual person who’s been in Lilith Fair years ago and opened for Ani Difranco,” Freeman explains, indicating the quality control about which he was adamant in building this year’s lineup. Freeman says it was also vital for the festival to feature a diverse array not only of queer performers, but of musical genres as well, which includes country and rock acts alongside hip

hop and classical musicians. “I booked Nhojj because I really think in our community genres like soul and R&B tend to get under represented,” he says. With so many live music festivals happening every summer, Out in the Woods has the distinction of being one of very few queer-centric events. “Pride festivals will tend to book the straight disco diva,” says Freeman. “There’s been a lot of talk about that, about why we’re not seeing more gay and lesbian acts represented. For me, in addition to this being a fundraiser, as a singer-songwriter myself, I’m very interested in creating opportunities to showcase more lesbian and gay performers.” And that, according to Fisher, is just what the festival has done. “It’s creating a space where people can see all these openly queer artists perform and feel proud that these people are representing our community.” N Out in the Woods at Easton Mountain, 391 Herrington Hill Rd, Greenwich, NY, August 10 from noon–9pm; $20 under 25/$30 general admission. MURDER FOR TWO PHOTO: JOAN MARCUS

Curtain Up NYMF: Boys Will Be Boys Murder For Two By David Hurst f the “revue” is the most difficult of all theatrical genres to pull off, a “gay revue” may be almost impossible. This was recently evidenced by the well-meaning but lightweight Boys Will Be Boys, staged as part of this year’s New York Musical Theater Festival (NYMF). Written by Kenneth Kacmar (music) and Joe Miloscia (book and lyrics), Boys Will Be Boys is subtitled “An OUT-rageous Musical Revue!” but the problem is it’s neither that outrageous nor that musical. It desperately wants to be either Whoop-Dee-Doo! or When Pigs Fly, both of which Howard Crabtree had a hand in creating, but those shows are in a class by themselves, setting the bar impossibly high for future gay revues. Though it has a few funny moments and a hardworking cast, Boys lacks bite, savvy and, most importantly, relevance. In an era of expanding gay rights and marriage equality, Miloscia and Kacmar don’t seem to have anything to say about gay men today. It’s not enough to give us stereotypes that are “out and proud” if they have nothing new to say, even if it’s done with love and good humor. We’ve seen everything in Boys before, but done far better and with more style and wit. It doesn’t take much imagination to craft parodies of songs like “Sisters,” “Somewhere That’s Green” or “Some People,” especially when they’re next to smarter, original material like “Balls,”“Marry Me Anyway” and “Giant.” Boys Will Be Boys debuted at the Duplex back in 2006 and has been kicking around the country ever since. Based on its latest NYMF outing, it’s time to give these Boys a rest. Depending on your tolerance for camp acting, the disposable Murder for Two may be the longest 90 minutes you’ve ever spent in the theater. Directed with a leaden hand by Scott Schwartz, the show is a two-hander whodunit that wants to be The 39 Steps by way of The Mystery of Irma Vep. If only it succeeded—alas, it only exhausts. The adorable Brett Ryback plays a police officer trying to solve a murder in order to get promoted to detective, while the over-the-top Jeff Blu-

menkrantz plays a baker’s dozen worth of suspects—each a chance to chew what little scenery there is in the theater. The gimmick? Both actors play the piano (quite well, actually) and accompany themselves and each other at the center-stage Steinway when they’re not racing around like maniacs. The point? Good question. Written by Joe Kinosian (who also costarred in the 2011 Chicago production as “The Suspects”) and Kellen Blair, Murder for Two elicits admiration for the stamina of its cast more than anything else. N Second Stage Uptown’s Murder for Two plays through August 17 at the McGinn/Cazale (2162 Broadway @ 76th St, 2ST.com).

Cabaret Confidential f the dog days of August have got you down, head to 54 Below (254 W 54th St, 54Below.com) for a celebration of Brazilian music and artists in their 54 Below Loves Brazil series. Headlining is handsome out Tony winner Paulo Szot who will bring his new collection of American Songbook, Brazilian melodies and jazz classics to the stage Aug 5–11. Joining Szot in the series this month will be Chico Pinheiro and The Brazilian Dream Band, Maucha Adnet and Helio Alves, and Anat Cohen and Choro Adventuroso. (Check out 54 Below’s website for the complete schedule.) Additionally, Paulo Szot don’t miss the slinky seductress Ute Lemper Aug 14–17, as well as the phenomenally talented Ann Hampton Callaway and Liz Callaway in their sensational Sibling Revelry show Aug 28–31. Meanwhile, the Broadway at Birdland Concert Series (315 W 44th St, BirdlandJazz.com) boasts an impressive lineup of crooners in August: Clark Thorell in Songs I Wish I’d Written Aug 5, Tony winner Steve Kazee Aug 11, Julie Halston in Classical Julie Aug 12 and 19, James Barbour Aug 26, and—of course—Jim Caruso’s Cast Party every Monday night at 9:30pm. Caruso, New York’s scintillating hostess with the mostess, presides over this weekly party where anyone can show up and anything can happen. And usually does! N

FLY ME TO THE MOON christian camargo in Europa Report

The Spectacular Now

Europa Report Time Investment: 90 min. Return on Investment: 55 min. f you saw Alien and thought, “I could do that!” go Google an actual space shuttle and you’ll most likely recoil in horror at the cramped, messy quarters, tight sleeping space, floating instruments and switch panels. It’s a whole different ball game when you’re battling aliens or discovering new planets and you can’t stand up without banging your head on the ceiling. That’s what makes the Europa Report (Magnet) an interesting entry into the space-travel cannon. The film’s primary concept is to show fictional deepspace travel as it most likely would look—cramped, crowded, awkward. Using a technique that mimics found footage, Europa follows six astronauts (featuring, most notably, District 9’s Sharlto Copley) during man’s first trip past the moon—to look for life on Jupiter’s moon of Europa. Not only does the film do a great job of showing what everyday realities might look like aboard a private spacecraft, but it also illustrates the distance humans would have to go to reach the other planets in our solar system. But all this scientific authenticity plays a bit like a science museum exhibit, so Ecuadorian filmmaker Sebastián Cordero throws in some extraterrestrial terror for thrills. While at the same time the bumps in the night give the journey some nice tension, it cheapens the film’s attempts at realism. Which is a bummer, because deep-space travel sounds scary enough even without underwater aliens. —Benjamin Solomon

Time Investment: 100 min. Return on Investment: 85 min. he Spectacular Now (A24) really wants to pull at your heartstrings—and your high school nostalgia. (500) Days of Summer writers Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber attempt to capture the sex-and-booze focused minds of high school seniors who can’t bare to think about their future, much less understand others in their new film. And for the most part they succeed, with director James Ponsoldt crafting an earnest, sweet ode to coming of age focused around Vince Vaughn in the making Miles Teller. Teller plays Sutter Keely, the class clown who never goes anywhere without his super-sized soda spiked with booze. The way he drinks and drives, drinks and attempts to write his college essay, drinks

T

and confronts his ex-girlfriend, you know he’s on the road to disaster. Unfortunately, he manages to charm the sweet and uncool Aimee Finicky (Shailene Woodley) along the way. And of course she falls for him hard. Kudos to Ponsoldt for showing his actors’ flaws: they never seem to wear makeup and they rarely do the right thing. In doing so, The Spectacular Now slowly transforms from an ode to youth to a demonstration of how quickly we are willing to throw it all away for what seems like love. Unfortunately, Ponsoldt can’t go all the way, and tragedy becomes a close call and the characters end up making all the right decisions just before it’s too late. It almost threatens to derail the whole film— and it would if it weren’t for the career-making performances from Teller and Woodley, whose charm makes the film’s disappointments forgivable. —BS

The Brunch Club Next Magazine takes a look at those luxurious, carefree weekend hours between breakfast and lunch.

DINING

NEXTMAGAZINE.COM

By Peter Sherwood hough a breakfast club is nice, brunch gatherings lean more toward spice because they usually involve booze. Stecchino (765 Ninth Ave, 212-397-2377, Stecchino NYC.com) offers some Brooklyninspired old-fashioned Italian cooking and an all-you-candrink brunch. For 90 minutes, you can partake of the usual liquid suspects like Bloody Marys, screwdrivers, mimosas and draft beers for a reasonable $20 dollar price tag plus the cost of what you actually eat. This may involve Benedicts, ricotta pancakes, short rib hash or a Caprese salad. Grab hold of hefty burgers such as The Butcher’s Block with ground boar sausage, pork shoulder and black truffles or take to the sea with The Sicilian, featuring fresh tuna with chilis and an anchovy caponata topping. Good times are also had at Philip Marie (569 Hudson St, 212-242-6200, Philip-

T

Marie.com) when it comes to the $24.95 brunch deal, which includes unlimited Bloody Marys and mimosas with an entrée on Saturdays and Sundays. Apart from traditional lumberjack breakfasts, Benedicts and French toasts, the wide-ranging menu also includes quesadillas, mahi-mahi with Cajun mayo, grilled chicken wraps and burgers. Pucker up for Lips (227 E 56th St, 212-675-7710, LipsNYC.com), the biggest drag show in town! The girls are still out in full force, humorously dishing out digs at the customers along with the food, which is much better than one might expect amid all the illusion. Ginger Snapt hosts the weekend Broadway Brunch where $19.95 covers a Bloody Mary or mimosa—and six bucks more unleashes “unlimited premium drinking.” “The Little Mermaid” is otherwise known as a bagel platter with smoked salmon while the “Chicago” peddles penne pasta a la vodka. “Gypsy” sides

are an additional three bucks. Joseph Leonard (170 Waverly Pl, 646-429-8383, JosephLeonard.com) certainly packs in a hot crowd. A Bloody Caesar is an eye-opener, with vodka, clamato, stinging sriracha sauce, a baconwrapped Brussels sprout and an oyster! Eggs are served as you like with country bread and avocado, in your choice of omelettes stuffed with mushrooms, frittatas filled with vegetables or poached with lobster and hollandaise sauce. A reliable, if more rarefied version of a bacon, egg and cheese sandwich is also available to absorb some of the prior evening’s dulling indulgences. Expect a wait as they don’t take reservations and it’s a bit of a tight spot. Across the way is Jeffrey’s (172 Waverly Place, 646-7472455, JeffreysGrocery.com), serving ironically attired hipsters of varying age. As platters of raw bar selections twirl by, the folk contemplate a daily quiche, cottage cheese blintzes, corned beef hash,

challah Monte Cristos with maple mustard and brisket sandwiches with beet horseradish. Try the cucumber rum laced with lime and outfitted with rhubarb or the Framboise Bellini for something a bit more conventional. An air of mystery swirls around the suggestion on the menu to “Make it a Jeffrey.” Ask your server about it… We’ve always been roped in by Cowgirl Hall of Fame (519 Hudson St, 212-633-1133, CowgirlNYC.com), just north of Christopher Street. The frozen blood-orange margaritas are a potent plea to wake up on the weekend! There are revolving brunch specials such as buttermilk pancakes, and a host of country-style eggs are always on the skillet. We suggest, however, starting with a heaping plate of cheesy chicken black-and-white nachos before deciding between chili served right out of a Fritos bag or the chicken fried chicken with grits. The dessert baked potato must be seen firsthand by any cowhand. N

MANUEL: When I heard we were reviewing Butt Snack, I thought someone had opened a new fast-food chain. This all-rimming video is loaded with horny tops eating “Man-gina Happy Meals” and then jerking their special sauce all over their bottoms’ seedy buns—hey, Butt Snack is porn and fast food! Maybe the sequel should be called “Jack in My Box.” ROD: Butt Snack is a movie I can get behind. Imagine nothing but non-stop ass eating—or as I like to call it, “Thursday.” But couldn’t someone at least have turned on the lights? There’s nothing shameful about eating ass! MANUEL: Rod, Treasure Island is all

about the dark and dirty, as these sixtyfour minutes of penetration-free freakitude demonstrate. ROD: In “Straight Boy Hole,” young Wolf Hollander needs to make some money. What better way than by sticking your hetero ass in a gay guy’s face? As good as Shane’s ass-eating is, a nervous Hollander takes a phone call while he’s being rimmed and then takes off. Who does that? MANUEL: Whether it’s the super-closeups of tongue-hole action; focusing on Joshua Door’s face as he lies back in transported ecstasy; the black bar superimposed over the eyes of a bottom who wished to remain anonymous; or keeping Dylan Marcus’ spent nine-inch black dick in the shot as a dangling rope of cum threatens to drop from it—T.I.M.’s devotion to detail puts this studio in a class of its own.

First up: Landon Conrad eating, fingering and fucking stocky stud Donnie Dean, who returns the favor. Leather straps hanging from the ceiling let Dean perfectly position his hole above Conrad. ROD: Conrad is so good at eating ass, he could do it for a living. Oh wait… Next, it’s JR Bronson, blindfolded and completely encased in Saran wrap. He must have the freshest ass in town! Adam Killian breaks the seal to access Bronson’s sweet smooth hole. MANUEL: Besides Bronson’s remarkable

ass, this scene features one of the most creative and gravity-defying positions I’ve seen since Fred Astaire tap-danced on the walls and ceiling. Killian should win an award for it, hands down (and legs up). ROD: Hole 1’s five scenes also include two with Raging Stallion regulars Angel Rock and Tyler Wolf, and Tommy Defendi and Jimmy Fanz. MANUEL: Was it me, or were these guys all fucking in the room from Saw? I particularly enjoyed Rock’s spit-kisses and snowballing, and Defendi’s longdistance power-cumshot. ROD: Some guys have all the luck, or in Trenton Ducati’s case, all the cock. Scene five finds Ducati watching a video of himself, on his knees, being force-fed five jockstrap-clad cocks at once. Then we’re told the story is “to be continued.” I can’t wait for more hole!
