GETTING

PERSONAL WITH... <<<SHAWN HOLLENBACH

Shawn Hollenbach is used to people laughing in his face. The out comedian regularly performs at Comix, therapy, Bar-tini, Phoenix and the Stonewall Inn—and still finds time to coproduce the Miss Fag Hag Pageant with pal Paul Case. What got him into such funny business? “I needed to find a new way for gay men to ignore me,” he deadpans. “It worked.” Hollenbach is also readying for the return this fall of Closet Cases, the Tank’s queer standup series. We held a cream pie to Shawn’s face and got him to play it straight. —Dan Avery

O

NCE UPON A TIME New York nightlife was a thing of unmatched legend. The club scene had reached near-mythic proportions and at the epicenter of this grandeur was the heart of and soul of it all: the Roxy. Nestled in the heart of Chelsea, it was the one place where all walks of life across all sectors of the city and beyond converged, if but for a minute, to rub elbows amongst the famous, the infamous and the decadence that Manhattan had to offer. The fully inducted sweated themselves into a frenzy on a weekly basis, spinning wildly on the expansive dance floor, raving to the sounds of celebrity deejays the likes of Hex Hector, Junior

expensive nightclub appeared less fashionable. Without regular big-room parties to attend, the crowd that frequently attended these affairs burnt themselves out on other diversions. Dimming the lights on the Roxy gave rise to glamorous memories as grand as the glory days of Studio 54, leaving most to wonder now if those days—those nights—can ever be recaptured. Fortunately, if anything has proven itself about our fair city over the years, it’s this town’s resilience and ability to roll with the punches. Legendary cabaret artist and club host Raven O says, “The club scene will always adapt. People need to go out and release their frustration! They need to express themselves.” And in recent times the nightclub scene has

“all anyone really cared about in the past was the virtual orgasm of the club scene. Now it’s all about the foreplay and the sex leading up to the ultimate gratification.” —Mark Nelson Vasquez and Peter Rauhofer. DJ Manny Lehman, who held court often at the Roxy, fondly remembers, “Spinning there for many years was a treat—the energy and hunger for new music was always insatiable. It was a DJ’s dream room!” But in 2007 the doors at 515 West 18th Street closed for good, seemingly ending the age of the big-room dance club. With the economy shifting after the events of 9/11— and more recently, the recession—and the advent of online social networking sites such as Manhunt taking a more active role in the “hookup” culture, the demand for an

been showing new signs of vitality, and more importantly, imagination, despite the begrudging shadow of the past. Tony Fornabaio who, along with Brandon Voss, is cornering the resurgence of club life shared his insights. “I don’t think anyone wants to recreate the Roxy—that was such an encapsulated time in nightlife culture,” he says. And if anyone did dare to recapture that era? “It would be impossible!” Fornabaio also acknowledges the demand changed as audiences became more sophisticated. “What Brandon and I are creating is reminiscent of those days with

JULY 9, 2010 15

the diversity of music and a diversity of people coming together.” The two now promote Rockit Fridays at Quo and Club 57 at Providence, two of the most popular and wellattended nights in New York, as evidenced by the lines outside either club. Their parties have featured performances from dance divas Kelis and Ke$ha. “We’re working very hard to create a party that’s fabulous, and we expect our crowd to bring the fabulousness!” Fornabaio declares. Their success is due in part to a new generation starting to inhabit clubland, one that might not even recall the days of the Roxy. They’re tech savvy enough to be connected every minute of the day via Twitter and Facebook, and only a few clicks away from deciding the mood of the evening. A night out with the gang has grown beyond the allure of just a big room full of high-wattage lights, an impressive sound system and the deejay du jour. It’s had to evolve into an interactive, provocative environment serving even the most discriminating of tastes, a world that promoters are sculpting into the new adult playground for their more sophisticated and eager audience. Mark Nelson, the architect behind the popular Friday night offering The F Word, which currently resides at Splash, one of the most famous and enduring gay spaces in New

nightlife culture. “The Roxy was the star, but now it’s a different time,” he says. “Celebrity is such a short-term gain.” He certainly recalls the allure of promoting the biggest nights at the Roxy and how easily it was to fill the space—at least while it was the biggest game in town. Blair’s intention is to create something that has greater momentum and provide a space that will work in tandem with the rest of the city’s scene. Currently under construction and preparing to debut early in 2011 is the newest gay destination on the East Coast, Out NYC. The space will not just encompass one of the largest, most high-tech dance floors in the city, it will be one of the first urban gay resorts of its kind—with hotel rooms and accommodations, two restaurants, a full-service spa, shops, a state-of-the-art fitness facility by David Barton and numerous lounges and cabaret spaces. Should it succeed, Out NYC will profoundly impact gay tourism as well as elevate the community’s profile as a profitable market. The entertainment site will be located in the heart of Times Square, granting easy accessibility to everything the city has to offer. Blair has always demonstrated the ability to balance the politics of the business with the reality of keeping the scene energized and vital. “We’re creating something that hopefully

York, has learned to rely on creating events that are in and of themselves spectacles. “All anyone really cared about in the past was the virtual orgasm of the club scene,” Nelson colorfully offers. “Now it’s all about the foreplay and the sex leading up to the ultimate gratification.” After all, if the experience only lasts all of two minutes, why is it worth leaving the house in the first place? “Expectations are out of control!” But then, so is the Friday night experience that he promises to deliver. The F Word has had its own share of celebrity attention, from American Idol’s Adam Lambert to superstar icon Kylie Minogue, who celebrated the release of her newest album there and treated fans to an impromptu 20-minute live set. And everyone agrees that the advent of the media age has only heightened that experience. “You can let anyone in,” Fornabaio added, “but if it ain’t happening they’ll have a drink and leave two minutes later!” With the irresistible pull of social networking sites at everyone’s smartphone fingertips, a negative tweet or unflattering Facebook wall post is all that it would take to ruin a perfectly crafted event. “And we can’t take everyone’s cell phones away,” Nelson admits with a snicker. To that point legendary nightclub promoter/producer John Blair has taken perhaps the most ambitious approach to resuscitating New York’s status as the leader of gay 16 JULY 9, 2010

people will take a look at it, see what we’re doing and will imitate it.” And at the very onset, creating an entirely new reason to “staycation” in the Big Apple. “This is where we live [here],” Blair says, “the greatest city in the world!” In retrospect it seems fitting that one of the last big events to take place in the hallowed halls of the Roxy was the album-release party for one of the greatest gay icons of our time. Madonna debuted her Confessions on a Dance Floor there, to a captive audience who had come to see their deity unleash her newest offering. Confessions was Madonna’s homage to the early days of disco and the house sounds popularized by remixers, particular those who had taken her music and raised it to new heights. On that fateful night Madge introduced a sound she had coined as “future-disco,” and with that the Queen helped close the halls of the mighty Roxy, purposefully locking its legend and properly heralding the new age of the dance. Even as New York continues to move into the 21st century and beyond the time of the Roxy, it is safe to say that its future as an entertainment mecca and its continuing ability to stand out as the greatest and most engaging gay metropolis in the world is in good hands. Club revelers near and far, from down the block to across the shore and the oceans beyond, will always find that the heart of New York still moves to the beats. And that this truly is the city that never sleeps. N

BIGGER IS BETTER (above) The Saint at Large’s Black Party; (inset) Kylie Minogue at Splash’s The F Word.

roseland ballroom 239 W 52nd St (btwn Eighth Ave/Broadway), 212-247-0200, RoselandBallroom.com The one-time ice-skating rink just outside Time Square recalls the vast size and history of the Roxy. While it mainly plays home to concerts, conventions and the occasional episode of My Super Sweet Sixteen, Roseland is still on top of the list when it comes to big dance parties. WHO DANCES THERE: Pride weekend saw Peter Rauhofer’s Work! (MySpace.com/WorkNYC) and though not exactly a traditional dance party, the space has been home to Broadway Bares’ striptease epic (BCEFA.org). However it is The Saint At Large (SaintAtLarge.com) that puts Roseland on the gay party map every March with the Black Party.

splash 50 W 17th St (btwn Fifth/Sixth Aves), 212-691-0073, SplashBar.com Having outlasted almost all of its contemporaries, Splash remains one of New York’s most iconic gay and gay-owned institutions, mostly due to its unparalleled size. Recent appearances by the likes of Kylie Minogue only help prove the club is still an epicenter of the gay party scene.

30 JULY 9, 2010

WHO DANCES THERE: After the Roxy passed it’s no surprise that John Blair (JBlair.com) took his signature Saturday night circuit party to 17th Street where it continues to run at capacity every week. More recently Michael Formika Jones and Mark Nelson’s The F Word is helping to bring a whole new generation into the club’s hallowed halls.

Pacha 618 W 46th St (btwn 11th/West Side Hwy), 212-209-7500, PachaNYC.com Ibiza may have taken the reigns as the dance capital of the world from the Big Apple long ago, but they left a little bit of dignity at this Hell’s Kitchen outpost. One of the last remaining mega-clubs in full-time operation in Manhattan, Pacha has long been a haven for hardcore circuit fans and promoters WHO DANCES THERE: You name a worldrenowned DJ and they’ve played there. Victor Calderone (VictorCalderone.com) continues his bi-weekly party Evolve there and Pacha famously housed the birth of Ric Sena’s roving gay favorite, Alegria (AlegriaEvents.com), which recently returned for its Memorial Day edition.

Providence 311 W 57th St (btwn Eighth/Ninth Aves), 212-307-0062, ProvidenceNYC.com While this converted church in Hell’s Kitchen might raise nostalgia for Limelight’s days of club kids and druggie disco, the chic, freshly minted dance space offers anything but. WHO DANCES THERE: Since the party’s debut less than a year ago, Club 57 (FVEventsNY.com) has already entertained the likes of Marc Jacobs, Ke$ha, Adam Lambert, Janice Dickinson and Lance Bass. Its no wonder the party’s promoters, Tony Fornabaio and Brandon Voss, have been heralded as reviving New York’s dance-headier days.

rebel 251 W 30th St (btwn Seventh/Eighth Aves), 212-695-2747, RebelNYC.com If you ever tried to throw a big gay dance party in New York, the odds are it was at Rebel at one point or another. Krash, F Word, mr.Black and even the final Motherfucker all called the velvet-and-chandelier-strewn space their home. WHO DANCES THERE: Rentboy.com’s hosts their international sex-workers dance party, Hustlaball (HustlaBall.com) here every year.

Kylie Minogue

THErIghTTRACK BY KEO NOZARI n Kylie Minogue’s 11th studio album, Aphrodite, she casts herself as the Goddess of Love—and there’s plenty to love on this record. In fact, there are so many big, gloriously gay dance tracks, it seems a crime that mid-tempo “All the Lovers” was released as a first single during the dance-friendly summer months. “Lovers,” with its low-wattage vocal and dated production, had lots of New York DJs scratching their heads instead of their turntables. After all, dance classic “Can’t Get You Outta My Head” was the first single off Minogue’s best-selling album of all time, Fever, on which Aphrodite seems modeled. Now if we had been in charge, a press release like this would have been issued faster than Apollo’s chariot in April: “From songwriting twins Miriam & Olivia Nervo who brought you last summer’s anthem from David Guetta and Kelly Rowland, “When Love Takes Over,” comes Kylie Mingoue’s sensational new summer song, “Put Your Hands Up (If You Feel Love).” That may have better served Minogue to capitalize on summer fresh out of Aphrodite’s heavenly gate. And this song is just one of the delicious, dance-floor ready tracks. “Get Outta My Way” (the rumored second single) shows a sassier side as Minogue pushes a lazy lover aside, album closer “Can’t Beat the Feeling” raids some of Prince’s ’80s synths and takes them on a buoyant joyride and “Better than Today” is a fabulously Scissor Sisters-esque electrocountry bumper. And while Scissor Sisters didn’t write that, Jake Shears did co-write “Too Much” (along with Minogue and producer Calvin Harris) for another winner. Not that the whole album is worth worshipping—there’s definitely some filo dough filler between the Greek Goddess’ amazing tracks. Executive producer (and co-producer of much of the album) Stuart Price—best known for coproducing with Madonna and others her 2005 Confessions on a Dance Floor—shows himself a great collaborator throughout, but his solo efforts as producer (and as sole co-writer with Minogue on some songs) provide the album’s weaker moments. Additionally: the marching-band-esque title track feels forced, like the album name was conceptualized apart

from the odd song (though we suspect it’ll sound great in concert). And Sebastian Ingrosso’s “Cupid Boy” isn’t Minogue’s most vocally flattering effort. Another missed opportunity on Aphrodite: on the heels of Minogue’s successful U.S. tour, why not bring on board some American-based dance-pop producers (who’ve been making the big global hits these days?) For example, Minogue’s collaboration with Lady Gaga’s producer RedOne is bizarrely a no-show here (even after she gushed about working with him via Twitter). His work could have potentially launched her out of the gay disco and given her wings to reach a larger U.S. audience. But you know what? We’re happy keeping this Goddess of Love all to our gay selves. N

ARIES (MARCH 21–APRIL 20) Keeping sight of the goal is main priority but checking peripheral vision along the way has its benefits. Watch for signs letting you know what direction will lead you to success.

TAURUS (APRIL 21–MAY 21) Trust is a majoring factor these days; keep your voice low when conducting private matters; all it takes is one eavesdropper to spread a rumor like wildfire!

GEMINI (MAY 22–JUNE 21) The cosmos aligns evenly for you; don’t screw things up! Fate is trusting you to have a better go with second chances, so don’t cry over spilled milk if you repeat negligent behavior!

CANCER (JUNE 22–JULY 23) Keep a sense of humor about oddities in your life, be it abstract affairs, flighty coworkers or strange family issues. Budget wisely and you’ll keep afloat easier.

LEO (JULY 24–AUGUST 23) Ask yourself what your true motives are for getting involved in another’s battle. If your answer is sincere, fight your best! If it’s selfish, beware of consequences!

NEXT >>>

HOROSCOPE

VIRGO (AUGUST 24–SEPTEMBER 23) Your ideal of perfection in both your own physique and skill and your expectations of others could be a positive influence on lazier cronies! Keep up your decorum!

LIBRA (SEPTEMBER 24–OCTOBER 23) Details! Details! Look for the fine print and read between the lines. Also, bring this same attention to anyone you’re soliciting brilliant ideas from; you’ll be grateful later!

SCORPIO (OCTOBER 24–NOVEMBER 22) It may not seem fair to others when you hold the reins, just make sure that you don’t become consumed by power and turn even your strongest supporters against you, too.

SAGITTARIUS (NOVEMBER 23 –DECEMBER 22) Stop! Rewind! Play again! Repeat! If old habits are rearing their heads and getting in the way of new lifestyle choices, consider why. Start over and do it right!

CAPRICORN (DECEMBER 23 –JANUARY 20) Suspicion and mistrust towards your skills in decision making resulted in a sore mistake once upon a time. Now that you have a chance, it’s time to correct that and make nice.

AQUARIUS (JANUARY 21–FEBRUARY 19) Assemble your etheric and in-the-flesh dream team of players that will see your latest opportunity through to perfection. Aim high, don’t be humble now—there’s time for that later!

PISCES (FEBRUARY 20–MARCH 20) What’s the sweetest thing your lips taste? A kiss from the right person? Cupcake frosting from Magnolias or the sugar on a cocktail glass? Choose and treat yourself to a li’l bit more! © 2010 James Jacob Pierri. All rights reserved. For entertainment purposes only. Emanuel Xavier

OUT WORDS

BY JEROME MURPHY

EMANUEL XAVIER GOES TO CONFESSION manuel Xavier has dedicated his latest book to his mother, who once kicked him out of the house. It’s entitled If Jesus Were Gay & other poems, (Rebel Satori Press). The titular piece, a riotous litany of speculations on how the alternate sexuality of the savior would affect America’s practicing Christians, elicits knowing laughter from audiences. Xavier’s trademark fusion of book smarts and street smarts—in collections like Pier Queen, Americano and Mariposas—the latter an anthology that held the distinction of being the first to collect the work of queer Latino poets— has garnered him what he jokingly refers to as a cult following over the past decade. It has also invited plenty of controversy. Before a reading at a Florida high school (Jeb Bush territory), school officials warned Xavier that he would be arrested if he chose to read particular poems. Just to be sure, there were police officers on hand, ready and waiting. It didn’t matter in the end because, as Xavier told me, “the audience was there with me. They knew the poems anyway. And they knew what was being left out.” High school students hanging on a poet’s every word? What accounts for this? If you’re like most of us, you think of poetry as Wordsworth and dry lessons in iambic pentameter. Then again, most of the poets taught in schools don’t appear on Russell Simmons’s Def Poetry Jam or speak about Bushwick with “a piranha’s mouth, designed for survival.” Maybe it’s also because, as Xavier puts it, “when performing spoken word you need understand the art of having a presence.” This understanding of presence has led to several acting roles, including a lead role in Logo network’s The Ski Trip in 2005. Growing up in Bushwick made a determined survivor out of Xavier, who turned to drugs and hustling at the West Side Highway piers after a childhood of sexual abuse and neglect. There he met Willi Ninja of ball culture fame (Paris Is Burning), who encouraged the creative spark that blossomed when Xavier visited the Nuyorican Poets Café and found performers who enabled his own voice. Despite the crosses he’s borne, Xavier continues to draw inspiration from controversial matters. One of his earlier works,

“Americano,” has become freshly relevant in light of the debate over immigration and laws in Arizona. And it’s his drive to speak for those without the megaphones that has kept his roots in Bushwick, where he suffered a cruel physical attack in 2005. As he writes in “Waiting for God”: “The fingers on the trigger are not always white/Some belong to hands we hold in church during prayer.” Poetry has a relatively small but fervent audience, and the work of Emanuel Xavier might just convert the nonbelievers. N Emanuel Xavier recommends Nuyorican Café and Bowery Poetry Club as venues for excellent poetic performances, and will be hosting a reading series at El Museo del Barrio the third Saturday of every month beginning in September. “Legendary,” a music compilation featuring his work, is available on iTunes. J

oining Mr. Xavier this month in proudly taking the marginal mainstream, three writers pay tribute to the groundbreaking work of the late E. Lynn Harris with a trio of novellas featuring black men in challenging positions, emotional and otherwise. In Visible Lives (Kensington), a sexy basketball-playing intern, a New York summer blackout and a Santo Domingo sex retreat figure into a thricethrilling summer page-turner full of breakups, makeups and makeouts. What would happen if gays—florists, hairdressers, chefs and all—decided to boycott the wedding industry? In New York-based blogger and activist Ken O’Neill’s comic debut, The Marrying Kind (Alyson Books) , a wedding planner’s decision to give all bridezillas the brush-off until he can legally marry his partner snowballs into an entire movement. Even better? Fiction reflects reality in a boycott named for the novel, already nearly 2,500 members strong on Facebook. Take a rest from activism with the latest from the masterful Stephen McCauley (whose The Object of My Affection resulted in that passable ’90s Jennifer Aniston flick with Paul Rudd at his most adorable). In Insignificant Others (Simon & Schuster), McCauley’s comic touch is as deft as ever in exploring what casual partners can mean for a longtime open relationship. As with McCauley’s previous work, the joy in is in the details, the dialogue and the surprising tenderness underneath the comedic emotional armor.

The Gay Agenda

CURTAIN UP MY BIG GAY ITALIAN WEDDING THE GAY AGENDA ON THE LEVEE THE MERCHANT OF VENICE

Greenville, Miss., which has too many characters, too many acts and not enough focus. Directed by Lear deBessonet and written by Marcus Gardley with art by Kara Walker and music and lyrics by Todd Almond, On the Levee is an important story that would be better told in a documentary or a miniseries. And despite some contemporary line readings, I do recommend The Public’s The Merchant of Venice at the Delacorte, which will run in repertory with The Winter’s Tale thru Aug 1. Starring a terrific Al Pacino and Lily Rabe as Shylock and Portia, this dark spin on the Bard’s classic features a great set by Mark Wendland. Line up now! N

BY DAVID HURST t’s hard to know how caustically to review the unspeakably bad My Big Gay Italian Wedding, first seen Off-Broadway at the Actors’ Playhouse in 2003 and reopened May 22 at St. Luke’s. Like the similarly themed gay comedy Boys Just Wanna Have Fun (2007), it’s another vanity production written by and starring Anthony J. Wilkinson as an everyday guy (albeit, a gay one) who scores a stunningly beautiful boyfriend, this time played by out Amazing Race winner Reichen Lehmkuhl. Talk about wish fulfillment! It would be nice to say Wilkinson’s delusion is cute, harmless fun but it’s not. It’s an amateurish piece of junk that preys on our community’s desire to support gay writers and gay-themed vehicles. Wilkinson’s script celebrates and exploits every cliché imaginable while the quality of the acting would make a rural community theatre blush with shame. More fun and infinitely more gay-positive is Micah Bucey and Nicholas Williams’ The Gay Agenda, which just concluded a short run of two different shows, “Great Big Broadway Show” and “Songstyles of the Queer and Famous,” at Ars Nova last month. Distinctively adorable and brimming with talent, Bucey and Williams put a gay twist on the classic double-act, with Bucey playing the manic funnyman to Williams’ straightlaced sidekick. Bucey—who could be the love child of Charles Nelson Reilly and Jerry Lewis—transforms into dozens of madcap characters, while Williams calmly plays the piano (quite well, by the way) while occasionally looking vexed with Bucey’s antics. Their songs are fresh, funny and surprisingly complex, even when they’re in service of a musical version of Jaws IV. Watch for their return— and be sure to go early for cookies! I can’t recommend On the Levee, an overambitious, misguided dramatization of the Great Flood of 1927 in

FIRE STARTER Noomi Rapace in The Girl Who Played with Fire.

REEL LOVE THE GIRL WHO PLAYED WITH FIRE Time Investment: 129 min. Return on Investment: 110 min. re you familiar with the Millennium Trilogy—Stieg Larsson’s trio of multimillion-selling Swedish thrillers that began with The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo? Luckily, even those who are newbies to the series can start by catching the film adaptation of the second installment, The Girl Who Played with Fire (Music Box Films), without missing a beat—or a subtitle! The film, directed by Daniel Alfredson, opens with the titular girl’s hazy memories of a mysterious past. As it unravels, we learn more about tattooed Lisbeth Salander (played again by Noomi Rapace), whose past dalliance with fire leads to serious consequences for her future. But our unconventional heroine’s journey follows an equally important sextrafficking story arc, where she becomes the prime suspect in the deaths of two journalists who were set to expose several public officials’ transgressions with underaged girls. One of her few allies is the lead journalist on the story, Mikael Blomqvist (a brilliant Michael Nyqvist). The storylines and flashbacks draw in the viewer despite subject matter that’s almost as dark as Lisbeth’s early years. Hollywood is gearing up for a makeover of the series, with Ellen Page and Kristen Stewart vying to play Lisbeth and Daniel Craig and George Clooney up for the role of Blomqvist. Perhaps a remake might clean up the convenient coincidences in this current version, but if you wait for it, you’ll lose the chance to view a taut thriller that is probably best in its original language on its home turf. —Jack Martins

[REC] 2 Time Investment: 84 min. Return on Investment: 50 min. oreign markets have really stepped up the oft-overlooked horror genre since Japanese frights like Ringu (The Ring) and Ju-on (The Grudge) started gaining fans (and Hollywood remakes) last decade. But they weren’t the only ones influencing this horror revival. Spain’s [Rec] took the Blair Witch Project’s handheld camcorder thrills to new places with its first-person account of a camera crew quarantined inside a zombieinfested apartment in Barcelona (its remake was titled Quarantine). Co-director Jaume Balagueró says he and his cohort, Paco Plaza, were driven to make a sequel

F

THE BLAIR WITCHING HOUR AND A HALF Manuela Velasco and Jonathan Mellor in [REC] 2.

after the outreaching support of fans. And thus [Rec] 2 was born. Like most horror sequels, [Rec] 2 attempts to provide answers for the gory events of its predecessor, though following much of the original’s format (this time we follow an A/V-wired SWAT team sent in minuets after the first film.) While all of this is pretty predictable, the film’s highly religious aspirations are what make it stand out. While not entirely successful, the exploration of Exorcist-style demons as zombie-like killing machines give the film a refreshing depth over the usual mindless zombies. [Rec] 2’s inventiveness is cause for celebration, but the clever ideas just don’t congeal into the solid sequel Balagueró and Plaza seem capable of producing. —Benjamin Solomon

Sacha SackET

S

ongwriter Sacha Sacket is currently working on his new endeavor, The Viscera Project. Sacha has committed to producing and releasing 52 new songs in 52 weeks, a creatively ambitious undertaking that began in June 2010. He points out that his goal is to maintain a high production value, which his private studio, The Cave, facilitates. Sacket says, “I think it’s interesting that most artists and labels still want a few years between releases. I feel it has less to do with resources than it does mental blocks. My goal is to change the way we look at recording and creating music.” So what sends Sacket singing when it comes to takeaway? “When in New York, I hop the L train to Williamsburg to enjoy the Middle Eastern delights of Oasis (161 N Seventh St, 718-218-7607). I always order the Classic Falafel ($3) with extra hot sauce.” Filled with the perfect dose of parsley and other spices, the sandwich never fails to hit a high note with this openly out recording artist. And at only three bucks for a falafel, the restaurant is affordable for anyone on a budget. N Visit SachaSacket.com for more info.

uke’s Lobster is a very little place, but they sure do a big business! We arrived at just the right time to grab a couple of stools before being inundated with folks clamoring for some takeout. Former lobsterman Luke Holden’s menu is small too, with a concisely curated list of basic Down East seafood freshly delivered about twice a week from the cold waters of Maine. As my friend and I are both from New England, we’re pretty particular about our crustaceans and not only did we love our lobster at Luke’s, we found the tiny shack itself—adorned with touches such as buoys, netting and driftwood—to be completely charming! They haven’t gotten their liquor license yet so we satisfied ourselves with blueberry and root beer Maine Root Sodas ($2) from just outside of Portland. Lobster Bisque ($7.50/12 oz, $9/16 oz) was delectable with chunks of lobster, pepper and just the right touch of creaminess and fragrant sherry thickened by potato starch. Oyster crackers came with, ’natch. The Lobster Roll ($8/half, $14/whole) with a whopping ¼ lb of lobster was stuffed full into a classic New England hot-dog bun (Hold the mayo!) All seasonings are optional, but we let them go right ahead with a dusting of thyme, oregano and celery salt. We always love a bag of Miss Vickie’s Chips ($1) and asked for the Sea Salt & Vinegar variety here. We considered the Empress Crab Claws ($5/four claws) but much like the Lobster Roll, we were already considerably stuffed. Notes for a return visit include the Noah’s Ark Platter ($38) for two, a seafood feast of “biblical proportions.” It wasn’t out of the question, however, to dive into some of Gifford’s Ice Cream. We got a cone of Lobster Tracks ($2.75, 1 scoop) served upturned in a cup, with chocolate fudge swirl, vanilla ice cream and red chocolate chips filled with caramel. Chocolate Lover’s Chocolate ($2.75, 1 scoop) was similarly delivered, with chocolate ice cream and cake pieces wrapped up with a fudge swirl. A Maine Root soda floater is also available. Ayup. N
