The Carrara marble quarries, set in the Apuan Alps, offer a unique spectacle: white mountains sculpted by human hands for over two thousand years. The Romans already extracted marble here for temples and statues, while artists such as Michelangelo chose it for immortal masterpieces. Today, the quarries can be visited, allowing visitors to admire one of the world’s most famous heritage sites, where history, art, and nature come together.

THE QUARRY

La Cava Capraia, situata nel cuore delle Alpi Apuane in Toscana, è la culla dell’esclusivo marmo Breccia Capraia, apprezzato fin dall’epoca romana e scelto anche dai Medici per impreziosire Firenze nel Rinascimento. Riaperta da GMC S.p.A. nel 1970, oggi la cava produce in esclusiva questo materiale unico, trasformato in lastre e lavorato nei laboratori aziendali con la massima cura e qualità.

Capraia Quarry, located in the heart of the Apuan Alps in Tuscany, is home to the exclusive Breccia Capraia marble, valued since Roman times and later chosen by the Medici to adorn Renaissance Florence. Reopened by GMC S.p.A. in 1970, the quarry today produces this unique marble exclusively, transforming it into slabs and finishing it in the company’s workshops with the highest care and quality.
