SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 16, 2024 11 AM - 12:30 PM BUS GROUPS 1 PM - 3:30 PM INDIVIDUALS
Denny Farrell Riverbank State Park 679 Riverside Drive, New York, NY 10031
Dear Friend,
Welcome to the New York Urban League (NYUL) 37th annual Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) Fair. The HBCU Fair is presented in partnership with the Malcolm Bernard HBCU College Fair, Denny Farrell Riverbank State Park, and the New York Urban League Young Professionals.
As is our tradition, this year’s HBCU Fair will offer students access to over 30 HBCU admissions representatives, alumni, and staff, along with college and scholarship resources. There will also be workshops and guest speakers focusing on helping students gain the knowledge and tools necessary for them to move to and through higher education.
For qualified seniors, several schools will offer on-site admissions, fee waivers, and scholarships. This unique opportunity allows students an opportunity to gain early admission to many highly competitive institutions. The HBCU Fair will conclude with an authentic HBCU Experience, which will include a panel composed of recent alumni discussing their college journey. We hope you will enjoy everything this day has to offer.
I especially thank Wells Fargo and Geico for their lead sponsorship; Audacy, our media sponsor, and Fidelis Care, Enterprise, and Amazon for their additional support. Thank you for supporting our efforts and investing in the lives of youth in our communities.

There are 99 Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) serving approximately 300,000 students. These HBCUs are dedicated to providing a high-quality education for African-Americans and other students. In 1965, Title III of the Higher Education Act passed by Congress officially defined an HBCU as "an institution, accredited and established before 1964, whose principal mission was and is the education of black Americans." The first HBCU, Cheney University in Pennsylvania, was founded in 1837. HBCUs play a critical role in the American higher education system. These schools carry on legacies of service and influence and aim to educate future AfricanAmerican leaders. Today, HBCUs contribute greatly to the education of· black students in the United States - in fact, they educate nearly one-quarter of all African-American college graduates. Some advantages of attending an HBCU are the incredible support systems, networking opportunities and mentorship from leaders in the African-American community, and many times, lower tuition costs and better aid packages. If you think an HBCU might be a good option for your teen, consider the following:

2. COMMUNITY
Many students who attend HBCUs think the community environment is a big asset. One in two students at HBCUs is the first in their family to attend college. The sense of belonging can be a comfort to students who have never lived away from home. If your student is interested in joining a fraternity or sorority, they are often a large part of the social life on HBCU campuses. Oftentimes, students attend HBCUs because family members from previous generations attended and loved the experience. There are also more African-American role models, campus leadership opportunities, and involvement than at other similar schools.
3. TRANSITIONING AND EXTRA ACADEMIC HELP
HBCUs often do a much better job of giving disadvantaged students the tutoring and extra help they need to graduate than larger, less specialized colleges. They offer remedial classes, writing centers to check essays and tutoring help. If you think your student will struggle meeting the grade, do not give up; make sure their school has a program in place to help and check the student-teacher ratio. The lower the ratio, the more attention your student will receive.
4. GRADUATION RATES
The average graduation rate at many HBCUs is higher than that of African Americans at predominantly white institutions. Half of African Americans who graduate from HBCUs go on to pursue advanced degrees.
For a list of HBCUs, visit the U.S. Department of Education website at www.ed.gov To find an up-to-date list of Historically Black Colleges and Universities ranked based on academics and other factors, visit US News Best Colleges Rankings for HBCUs.

PREPARE FOR THE FAIR
Be ready with questions to ask the college representatives that match your goals. Here are some sample questions:
What are your academic majors?
I am a senior and have my SAT/ACT scores, transcript, grade point average and completed application. Can you waive my application fee?
What scholarships are available?
What is the average financial aid package at your school?
What academic support services do you offer, such as tutoring?
What student activities (sports, clubs, band, organizations, radio/TV, newspaper, etc.) do you offer?
How many students are currently enrolled?
What is the demographic makeup?
How many students live on campus?
Do you assign faculty advisors?
How safe is your campus?
What partnerships do you have with employers for student internships and job opportunities?
How can I arrange a campus tour?
