BHS Auditorium Renovation Project In Progress, Purchase A Chair To Join Its Legacy

T

By Cheryl Conway he Butler School District is placing the arts at center stage this year with renovations in progress at the high school through the remainder of the school year. Renovations began Nov. 1, 2017, of the Butler High School auditorium. Officials hope that project will be completed this June. Tekcom Construction in Somerset is handling all improvements. Built in 1922, the Butler High School auditorium was last renovated in the 1970’s. With the exception of sound and lighting, there have been relatively no improvements made to the space since then. Just about every aspect of the auditorium was in need of replacement or updating, says Butler Public Schools Business Administrator Barbara Murphy. goals in promoting student and community interest in the arts,” says Murphy. “The idea came up a few years ago,” says Murphy, to improve the space dedicated to concerts and programs. In 2013/2014 an application for grant money was submitted to the state, but was denied, she says. The walls and stage area will be repaired and painted. The seating will be increased to accommodate the entire student body and include handicapped seating. As far as keeping up with the latest in technology, Murphy says, “We recently updated sound and lighting two years

ago to LED.” The new auditorium will provide additional seating to accommodate all the students at Butler High School, she says. With 470 chairs in the former space, the plan is to increase to 550 chairs so all 511 students can fit in the auditorium at one time, she says. To get the community involved, and help offset costs that may arise, students, families, residents, alumni, orga-

nizations and businesses are invited to purchase a new chair with a commemorative plaque fixed to the back containing the name of donors. Made out of blue upholstery, so far about 50 chairs have been purchased. Cost is $150 per chair. While the district will put the seats in anyway, it is “hoping to use the money to defray the cost of change orders,” she says.
