You have probably been taught that the genes you are born with are yours for life.

You excuse things like your angry behaviors, high blood pressure or your weight on your genetics. My patients often tell me that their illnesses are genetic, and because of that they can’t do anything about it. What if I told you that isn’t completely true? What if I told you that changing the way you think can actually change your life? That might sound like fantasy to some, but it’s true! You may be asking how in the heck is that possible? Let’s break it down…

Our bodies have a sympathetic nervous system and a parasympathetic nervous system. The sympathetic nervous system (SNS) aka “fight or flight” response is activated by stressful situations. Historically this fight or flight response was needed for survival in the wild. For example, when being chased by an animal the SNS kicks in and all functions that are not needed for

immediate survival (i.e digestion…) are shut down. Among other processes, the body speeds up, heart pumps faster, the muscles contract and the brain is more alert. Activating the SNS also triggers the production of a molecule called Nuclear factor Kappa b (NF-Kb), which is responsible for our gene expression. During this process NF-Kb activates genes that release cytokines. These cytokines are responsible for producing inflammation on a cellular level. During a life/death event this is actually helpful short -term. However, in modern day life this same sequence of events occurs due to every-day stressors (that weren’t present in our early ancestors lives). Things like traffic, work-related stress and finances trigger this same “fight or flight” response, causing the same cascade of events that lead to increased NF-Kb and increased release of cytokines. In fact, just thinking about that stressful situation you had earlier will cause the same cascade of events to take place.

Most people in today’s society are living in a constant “fight or flight” state. This longterm “exposure” to these cytokines are linked to cancer, premature aging, mental disorders (including anxiety and depression) and other diseases.

On the other hand, it has been found that practicing yoga/meditation activates the parasympathetic nervous system (PNS).

The PNS, known as the “rest and digest” state, is the way that the body should be functioning normally. In this natural state, the heart rate slows down, blood pressure decreases and digestion takes place. Studies show that practicing Meditation/Yoga, specifically, reduce NF-Kb, therefore turning off the genes that release the cytokines, which in turn reduces the inflammatory response and therefore prevents premature aging and diseases like cancer. This is all happening on the molecular level! You can actually leave a molecular signature on your cells to regulate your own gene expression!

Boom… and there you have it! Now all you have to do is start Meditating to experience the benefits for yourself!

Duty, Honor And Love Of Country: Celebrate Local Heroes On Veterans Day

By Emmanuel Ureña riginally known as Armistice Day, November 11 was initially observed in honor of the soldiers who served in World War I. A little more than a decade later, the United States government would go on to make November 11 an official national holiday to pay homage to veterans who so courageously answered the call of duty in all of the wars in which the U.S. had fought throughout history. During the Eisenhower Administration, the name of this special day was officially changed from Armistice Day to Veterans Day. Every year since, the entire nation continues to celebrate the noble men and women whom have bravely fought, and selflessly sacrificed so much, so that everyone in America can live free and the U.S. can continue to serve as a beacon of hope.

“Mt. Olive Life” caught up with some local heroes who have proudly served their country in the armed forces to learn about their inspiration for joining the military, their life after serving, and the charitable work that they do in support of their fellow veterans.

Lieutenant Colonel (Ret.) Steve Niblett (U.S. Army) “I come from a great legacy of military veterans,” Budd Lake resident Steve Niblett said. His father, Jack, his uncle, James, his brother, Joey, and his father-inlaw, Jim Pardee, all proudly served their country in the armed forces. Niblett notes this military lineage as an inspiration for pursuing a career in the armed forces.

Niblett says that seeing the service academies up close motivated him to one day becoming an officer, and he worked towards that until his dream came to fruition.

Niblett was nominated by President Gerald Ford in 1974, and was accepted to the United States Military Academy

First Sergeant (Ret.) Amery Vasso (U.S. Army)

at West Point, N.Y. In June of 1979, Niblett graduated from West Point, and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the United States Army infantry. He went on to serve both stateside and overseas throughout his 28 years with the military.

“I was an Army infantry officer leading soldiers in combat and support units at the platoon, company and battalion levels,” he explained, and he did so in places like the Republic of Korea, Honduras and Iraq.

It was one of his stateside assignments, however, that would bring Niblett to the Garden State when he served for two years in Picatinny Arsenal located in Rockaway— just a short ride away from Mt. Olive, where he met a special lady named Candace. The two would marry a year later in 1991, and two years after their union, he would officially make Budd Lake his hometown. He and his wife would go on to have three children: Jay, Elise and Austin, who continued in his family’s legacy, and is today a U.S. Army airborne ranger.

After moe than two decades of distinguished service, Niblett received an honorable discharge in 2007 as lieutenant colonel. At this time, he was awarded the Legion of Merit Medal to accompany the many other commendations and service medals he received throughout his career, which include the Bronze Star and the Joint Services Commendation Medal for his work as an Iraqi Special Forces Brigade Training Chief during Operation Iraqi Freedom.

As a civilian, Niblett worked in engineering and financial jobs, and eventually began working at Prudential Insurance Company of America, where he still

works today as an associate/project manager. Prudential also offered Niblett a way to give back to his fellow veterans by assisting the company in hiring military veterans, and by taking a leadership role in Prudential’s Veterans Network (VetNet).

“I am actively involved with the Prudential Roseland Veterans Network (VetNet),” said NIblet. “I have organized numerous events for the disabled veterans at the Lyons Veterans Administration (VA) hospital. I get a lot out of giving back to veterans in need. The military was good to me, and I wish to give back to veterans when I can.”

Also currently the VFW Post Commander at Netcong and the VFW District 10 Commander in Morris County, Niblett often participates in activities to help out veterans and the community, including assisting Hurricane Florence veterans in North Carolina in a New Jersey statewide effort to collect and deliver relief supplies to hurricane victims.

This Veterans Day, Niblett says he’ll be spending time with his wife and fellow members of the VFW Post at Netcong for a lunch celebrating and recognizing those veterans who so bravely and selflessly served their country.

First Lieutenant (Ret.) Sara Vasso (U.S. Army) When asked why she enlisted in the military, Sara Vasso will tell you that she wanted “to see the world.”

As a member of the United States Army, Vasso got what she signed up for and so much more.

“I grew up in a small town in Northern Iowa, and it was a fairly sheltered and homogenous upbringing,” she said. “Getting out into the world – working and living with people from all kinds of backgrounds – as well as two years living in Germany and seven months in the Middle East, has profoundly changed me.”

Military life isn’t something new to Vasso’s life, however. She comes from a military family and, as a matter of fact, she is a member of the Daughters of the

“I think I had always wanted to serve in the military, and the college money is really not a reason to join, as the commitment to military service is so much deeper than any financial incentive,” Vasso said.

“My great, great grandfather was in the Civil War, my great grandfather was in WWI, my grandfather was in WWII, and my father served during the Korean War,” she said. “They all inspired me to join. Both of my brothers served in the U.S. Army as well.”

Her husband, Amery Vasso, also served in the Army, and her son, Joshua, is in the Air Force Reserves and is an active duty veteran.

With such a long line of veterans in her family, it’s no wonder that Vasso is a member of organizations like the VFW, and is an active member of the Wharton Post 91 of the American Legion along with her husband, Amery. As a member of these organizations, she participates in outreach programs aimed at supporting veterans and the community as a whole.

Even though she did get to travel as she hoped for when she enlisted, Vasso says that she got much more from the experience: life lessons, life-long friendships, awareness and a love for country. “[In the military] you learn so much, and it teaches you life skills that I believe you can’t get anywhere else,” she explained. “You will develop the most amazing friendships. I am

still friends with people I served with 25 years ago, and we will always have a special bond. Your eyes will be opened to the world beyond your immediate environment. You will expand your outlook on life. Seeing how other people live in different parts of the world brought me a greater sense of understanding, tolerance and, most of all, love of America.”

First Sergeant (Ret.) Amery Vasso (U.S. Army) For Amery Vasso, the decision to enlist in the Army was at first a financial decision. He joined the armed forces in order to fund his college education. In retrospect, however, Vasso says that deep down he always wanted to be a soldier—perhaps to follow in the footsteps of his father who served in the Navy during World War II and both of his grandfathers who served in the Army and Navy during World War I. “I think I had always wanted to serve in the military, and the college money is really not a reason to join, as the commitment to military service is so much deeper than any financial incentive,” Vasso said.

Vasso served in leadership positions in combat arms units, which spanned from 12 to as much as 800 soldiers at times. Attaining the title of first sergeant, he served across the United States as well as Germany, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar

and Iraq.

“My role was the professional development of soldiers and to ensure the combat readiness of the units I was assigned to,” he explained.

After retiring in 2007, Vasso worked for the Department of the Army, and later in the insurance industry. Although he bid farewell to his days of active duty, Vasso has not forgotten his fellow soldiers, and as the Morris County Commander for the American Legion, he represents 22 posts throughout the county assisting in providing a common and united voice on issues important to Morris County veterans. He also works with adjacent counties to support one another in broader issues important to Northern New Jersey. Other organizations he is a member of include Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disabled American Veterans, AMVETs and the All Veterans Alliance in Mt. Olive for which he holds supportive events for veterans. “[We hold] outreach activities for veterans, children and youth as well as services to honor and remember all veterans,” Vasso said. “And, raise funds and donate to charitable organizations serving veterans and youth.”

Another way in which Vasso honors veterans and soldiers throughout history is by participating in re-enactments.

“I enjoy history and my involvement in re-enacting is to provide some insight and knowledge to the public of the history of New Jersey Civil War regiments,” he explained, adding, “We provide living history programs throughout New Jersey, including schools. I have participated in numerous re-enactments—the most notables being [the Battles of] Antietam, Chancellorsville and Gettysburg.”

Abiding Peace Lutheran Church Brings Together Loving Community

By Elsie Walker ts sign says, “Abiding Peace Lutheran Church.” However, “Abiding Peace” is more than just this Budd Lake church’s name. It is the church’s identity. Whether as part of an interfaith alliance of local churches or in reaching out to others, this Lutheran church strives to reflect its name and to live the phrase, “love one another.”

The church is part of the ELCA (Evangelical Lutheran Church of America). Its pastor, the Rev. Serena Rice, explained what that means.

“The ELCA is the largest Lutheran denomination in the United States, and it was formed when several other denominations came together in 1988,” she said. “The ELCA is a ‘big tent’ denomination, meaning that it tries to make room for significant diversity in perspectives among its members on things on which the gospel provides room for disagreement. It is also the most inclusive Lutheran denomination in that it ordains women and LGBTQ+ clergy members and provides the option for clergy to bless same-sex weddings.”

Howard Corneilson and his wife Susan, of Roxbury, are charter members of Abiding Peace, having been with the church since the beginning, and shared its history.

“The Division for Mission in North America, Lutheran Church in America, started planning for a new congregation in the Morris, Sussex, and Warren (“Tri-County”) area in the late 1960’s,” said Corneilson. “One of the reasons the Budd Lake site was selected was the growing number of Scandinavian descendants then moving to Vasa Park. Rev. James Parks, who became the church’s first pastor, was appointed as the Mission Developer and began contacting local residents to begin the mission.”

The Corneilsons were living in Mt. Olive at the time and became part of the group tasked to establish a mission church in late 1970. The congregation was formally

organized on May 9, 1971 with 134 baptized members (92 confirmed and 42 children).

The congregation did not have a building and until it did, with the permission of the Mt. Olive Board of Education, it used what is now the Chester M. Stephens School for worship and Sunday School. Other meetings were held at members’ homes.

Corneilson shared, “A building site was purchased in the early 1970’s by the Division for Mission in North America, Lutheran Church in America for the future use of the congregation. Under the leadership of Rev. G. Richard Linderman, plans to construct a worship facility began. The first Liturgy was celebrated in our Parish Life & Ministry Center in May 1978 and was dedicated in June 1978.”

When asked about significant events in the church’s history, Corneilson noted the establishment of the Abiding Peace Senior Housing Corporation as one. It secured federal funding to build a non-sectarian senior housing complex in Flanders.

“The groundbreaking ceremony was held on October 10, 1992 and the completed ‘Mount Olive Manor’ (as the new senior housing was later named) opened to its first residents on September 30, 1993,” shared Corneilson.

Other signification events have to do with church outreach, specifically establishing projects helping with food needs. Abiding Peace started a small food pantry, stocked with donations by the congregation, which is used to help supplement members of the community with limited resources. Also, a vegetable garden was started on the church grounds. What is grown is used by the food pantry and also donated to the residents of Mount Olive Manor. In addition, members took on the role of volunteering to prepare and serve meals once each month at the Faith Kitchen in Dover.

recently, when its vicar (interim pastor), Serena Rice, became its full time pastor. Basically, an interim pastor is a candidate for ordination who serves at a church while completing his or her candidacy requirements. The hope is that the candidate and the church will be a good match, and that after the candidate is ordained, he or she will be called by the church to be its pastor. That is what has happened to Rice; Abiding Peace is her first church serving as a pastor.

“My call to the church has been a lifetime in coming, although I don’t feel like I wasted any of the years that came before,” said Rice.

“Every experience has shaped me into the person and the pastor

that I am now.” Those experiences include attending Westmont College in California where she double-majored in religious studies and sociology, graduating in 1999. She married her husband, Tyler in 2000, and they moved to New Jersey, so she could complete a dual-degree program with Princeton Theological Seminary (MDiv) and Rutgers School of Social Work (MSW).

She became a Licensed Social Worker, focusing on research and policy advocacy on issues related to poverty.

“Prior to entering candidacy, I served as the first executive director of the Anti-Poverty Network of N.J., a statewide educa-

tion and advocacy organization that sought to empower communities and individuals to work together for policies that would make N.J. a place where all people can thrive,” said Rice. “That work was absolutely consistent with my calling to serve the world that God so loves, and I continue to stay involved with advocacy by serving on the Board of the Lutheran Episcopal Advocacy Ministry of N.J., as well as regularly calling my elected officials as an engaged citizen.”

Also, Rice shared that she is the mother of two, a daughter, 11 and a son, 9. She enjoys good books, walking, hiking, and writing poetry and personal reflections. She also “dabbles” in Italian, which she learned while living in Milan for three years, and the flute, which she learned in her youth, but now seldom has time to play.

Worship at the church is set for 10 a.m. on Sundays. Nursery is

available with parental supervision during worship; there is a coffee hour following the service.

“Blended, respecting the traditional and welcoming the contemporary,” is how church member Mary Kasakove of Budd Lake describes worship. It includes choral and instrumental music. Also, Abiding Peace is home to The Messengers, a liturgical dance group of which Kasakove is director.

“Liturgical dance is God’s message through movement,” said Kasakove. “We dance during the service to amplify and glorify the message of the day. Our group is comprised of seven dancers. We dance six – seven times a year at Abiding Peace and also at other churches on occasion.”

11:45 a.m., Rice notes that the children are not excluded from the worship community, but play an active role in it. She said, “During the service, children have the chance to help with appropriate tasks, like ushering, lighting candles, or taking the collection, and they are invited up for a special interactive children’s sermon each Sunday. We also provide a ‘pray ground’ area at the back of the church, for younger children who benefit from a place to color or play with quiet toys, while they absorb the service going on around them.”

Children also take first communion class with their families and the pastor before receiving first communion, at whatever age their parents think is appropriate. Junior High youth participate in an additional Confirmation program that includes classes and study at home.

The church also believes in adult education, which is an important focus of time and energy at Abiding Peace. The church offerings include both Sunday “adult forum” classes and evening mid-week studies. Topics include Bible studies on different books of the Bible or topical studies, spiritual formation, current social issues, Lutheran history and teachings, learning from other faith leaders, and wellness topics. Rice noted that the church has made a commitment in its spiritual community to an education and engagement process called “Loving Dialogue.” Today, there are many topics people disagree upon. However, those in the church have the same faith identity. Using that as a basis, these topics of disagreement are discussed in the loving atmosphere, challenging those in the conversation to a make a more direct connection between their faith and their positions.

sey and the United Presbyterian Church in Flanders is a founding member of the Mt. Olive Interfaith Alliance. Rice describes the Alliance as in “its infancy.” She noted is has hosted different shared meals, learned about each other’s traditions, and done a few community-service projects. Those projects include a food drive for the Presbyterian Church pantry to help those in need in the community, and making sustainable lunches to be given out to the homeless through the Bridges project. The idea for the latter came from a family of the Islamic Society of North Jersey.

It turned into the ELCA service day project at Abiding Peace with the Islamic family joining the church in packing 248 lunch bags with non-perishable items.

Running For A Cure: Teen Raises Funds To Research For Best Friend’s Disease

But 13-year-old Ryan Melendez of Flanders has taken the up challenge to raise money to find a cure for the disease that plagues his best friend.

Melendez, an eighth grader at Mt. Olive Middle School, is gearing up for his Bar Mitzva ceremony on Dec. 9. In the Jewish faith, a mitzva is a commandment and also a good deed. It is common for young adults preparing for their b’nai mitvot to choose a mitzva project.

Melendez’ project is extra special because it is in honor of his best friend Brendan Wronko, 14, of Budd Lake. While considering ideas for his project, Melendez was looking for something meaningful.

“I realized that I had this friend who has a disease that he’s had his whole life, and since I’ve known him since second grade, it’s gotten progressively worse,” Melendez says. His mom, Michelle, came across The Halloween Half Marathon in Morristown scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 21. For his mitzva project, Melendez decided to register for the race and fundraise money to go toward research to help find a cure for Wronko’s disease.

The two met they were in the second grade at Mountain View Elementary School in Flanders. Wronko has a rare condition called neuroaxonal dystrophy. His older sister, Sarah, passed away from the same disease in 2014.

“They both started with gait disorder,” says their mom, Kelly Wronko, “walking and falling, and losing their balance around 5.” Sarah was misdiagnosed initially and underwent major spinal cord surgery. When Brendan started to show the same symptoms at age 5, the neurologist realized it was a genetic disorder. When Brendan was 6 and Sarah was 8, “Johns Hop-

kins was finally able to diagnose them,” says Wronko. “It’s a very, very rare disease. Very few people have it in the world.

And I have two.” Their brother, Collin, 11, is a carrier.

Wronko says, “Both children are atypical; this is usually an infantile disease.” Neuroaxonal dystrophy falls under the category of NBIA (Neurodegeneration with Brain Iron Accumulation). It is a disorder that causes cognitive regression, dementia, muscle spasms, and difficulty with movement.

“It’s an iron buildup in the cerebellum, mostly, and there’s just nothing they can do about it,” says Wronko. “It’s just one of those horrible diseases that you kind of have to watch it happen.” There are medications to help with some symptoms, but there is no cure for the disease.

The Wronkos actively fundraise for the NBIA Disorders Association. Sarah Wronko had created beautiful paintings, and the Wronkos organized auctions to fundraise under the name Love Tremor. They auctioned off her original works on canvas and prints and also have a clothing line with her prints. Initially, she could hold a brush. Later, she used her hands.

“The tremoring is part of the disease,” says Wronko. “Her hands and legs tremor, so that’s why we call it Love Tremor.

And she would sign the paintings with her thumbprint because she couldn’t sign her name.” Unfortunately, Sarah Wronko died from the disease at age 11.

For Brendan Wronko, he has been involved in racing for awareness and funding to find a cure. His aunt, Kelly Wronko’s sister, is a runner and started running races pushing him in a racing wheelchair. “Brendan has been pushed in several races in a racing wheelchair with a team that takes turns pushing him,” says Wronko.

While the Wronkos are very active in fundraising for research, they also find faith to be very important. Bren-

dan Wronko was invited to go to Lourdes, France with the St. Luke’s Special Needs Ministry three years ago for Special Needs Week. At the private baths, he was immersed in the spring waters. Miraculously, the disease has not progressed since then.

“He is on the same exact medicine that he was three and a half years ago,” says Wronko. “He speaks the same. He can still crawl. He doesn’t have a feeding tube. He’s alive. These are really amazing things. It’s a gift to have him here.”

Wronko reflects that she has learned a lot from her kids about appreciating life.

“Our kids are really special,” she says. “They’re not going to be here as long as other people, but they sure have taught us so much about life and what’s really important. They taught me more than I thought that I would ever know about. It’s like a secret to life. We don’t really sweat the small stuff that people get worried about or get mad about. I think that is a blessing too.”

When Melendez met Brendan Wronko, he was using a walker. Melendez recalls thinking, “This kid looks pretty nice. I guess I’ll try and make friends with him.” That was the start of six years of

friendship. Melendez’ initial impression of Wronko was spot on. “He’s really nice and kind to everyone,” he says. “He’s very upbeat and happy all the time.”

He has even helped him with his reading and schoolwork and pushing him in his wheelchair in school.

When they hang out, Melendez says, “We really like to play cars since it’s very easy for him to do, and we like to watch TV together.”

Michelle Melendez says, “Ryan doesn’t notice disability. Ryan just looks at a person, and I think that’s what Brendan’s kind of taught him.

He never looks at somebody that has a disability as having that. It’s more of they are just a person like everybody else, they just have limitations.” Kelly Wronko has admired the same quality in Melendez. “Ryan’s a special guy,” she says. “Not all kids do that. Not all kids get it. He’s a special kid.”

The boys have modified playing catch so they can both participate. They also went to Lego Land together.

“We went to specific stations he could do; there was a ball pit part where you could build with Legos,” says Melendez. “He got off his wheelchair, he got in, and we played in there. It was

about his fundraiser.

“I posted it on Instagram, I put it on Snapchat, I put it on most platforms of social media so it could get out to all of my friends in hopes of them and their parents donating to the cause,” says Melendez. He also sent emails out to family and friends.

His goal is to raise $5,000 for the NBIA Disorders Association to fund research to find a cure. On race day, Melendez had raised $2,492, which is about $191.66 per mile. This was from 47 pledgers. He is leaving the site open until Nov. 30 to give more people opportunities to donate and to reach his fundraising goal.

“I think it’s great that he’s taken to a cause that’s close to his heart, and hopefully this will go towards finding a cure,” says Michelle Melendez.

The Halloween Half Marathon was Melendez’s first half marathon. But he is no novice to running. He has been on the Mt. Olive Middle School Cross Country Team since the sixth grade. “Running started out as a secondary sport to swimming, which is my main sport, and in seventh grade, I realized that I was actually pretty good at it, and I started to pick it up a little bit more, and I started running more, and now I’ve realized that I’m one of the best runners in the school and can actually do these things to help out friends,” says Melendez.

As a seventh grader, he took fourth place in the Meet of Champions. This year, he took second place after helping pick up the eventual winner who had fallen down a hill.

“His coach actually recommended, because of his abilities, that he should try and do something a little more challenging,” says his mom. He decided a half marathon was a good

really nice because we could all do it together.”

Melendez is eager to help contribute to finding a cure for his friend’s disease. For his Bar Mitzva project, he set up a Pledge It web page to accept donations. People can donate per mile or a flat rate. He used social media to spread the word

challenge and great opportunity to fundraise for a cause that is important to him.

Cross country races in middle school are typically 1.35 miles. During practice, Melendez says, “we run from two to three miles every day.” He needed to boost his mileage in order to prepare for 13.1 miles.

He started training for the race in August.

“One of our friends runs a lot of marathons, and she’s been working with Ryan and giving him coaching ideas and how to train,” notes his mom. Melendez’ plan was to increase his mileage on his long runs by one mile each week, building up to 13 miles. Prior to the race, Melendez says, “I’m a little bit nervous, but that’s lessened over the weeks knowing that I’m getting close to 13 and that I’m not going to fail hopefully.”

Melendez’ goal time was under two hours, which he shattered, crossing the finish line at 1 hour and 43 minutes, a 7:53/mile pace.

“It was a lot more challenging than I expected because of all the hills on the course that I hadn’t trained that much for, and it felt a lot longer than what I was ready for,” says Melendez. But those hills didn’t seem to slow him down too much as he took first in his age group and 65th out of 633 overall finishers.

Days before the race, Melendez says, “Brendan seems really ex-

cited. I mean, we’ve been friends for six years now, and he’s always excited to see that I’ve done something new, and he’s always happy.” Sure enough, Wronko was thrilled to see his best friend accomplish his goal. As he crossed the finish line, Wronko was there holding up a big poster to cheer him on.

“I didn’t know that he was coming,” says Melendez, “so when I saw him after I finished I was filled with so much joy and happiness.” This duo certainly knows how to support one another. And after the race, they enjoyed a meal together.

Not only has Melendez achieved a great personal accomplishment in completing his first half marathon, he has done so in honor of his best friend. His project continues to raise awareness and funds to help combat Wronko’s disease- an effort that shows commitment, understanding, and sacrifices of true friendship.

n the middle of the American Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln, prompted by a series of editorials written by Sarah Josepha Hale, proclaimed a national Thanksgiving Day, to be celebrated on the 26th, the final Thursday of November 1863.

The document, written by Secretary of State William H. Seward, reads as follows: The year that is drawing towards its close, has been filled with the blessings of fruitful fields and healthful skies. To these bounties, which are so constantly enjoyed that we are prone to forget the source from which they come, others have been added, which are of so extraordinary a nature, that they cannot fail to penetrate and soften even the heart which is habitually insensible to the ever watchful providence of Almighty God. In the midst of a civil war of unequalled magnitude and severity, which has sometimes seemed to foreign States to invite and to provoke their aggression, peace has been preserved with all nations, order has been maintained, the laws have been respected and obeyed, and harmony has prevailed everywhere except in the theatre of military conflict; while that theatre has been greatly contracted by the advancing armies and navies of the Union.

When peering at the 30-year Flanders resident’s biography, digesting the events and organizations he has chaired, reading about panels he has sat on and recognizing his business accomplishments, one can admire his involvement and resiliency.

Stewart, a 1971 graduate of the former Essex Catholic High School in Newark, has been married 33 years to his wife Sheila, and they are parents to an adopted daughter from China, Rachel Lixia, a Mt. Olive High School graduate, who now lives and works in New York City.

His bio is loaded on both the business and humanitarian side.

“I’ve been lucky,” confirms Stewart, whose efforts were rewarded in May 2018 with a Hackettstown Senior Hall of Fame award for community service in the greater Hackettstown area.

“I spent a corporate career with AT&T and after I left there I had some opportunities to give back, and I’ve taken advantage of that,” states Stewart.

As a Montclair State University graduate, Stewart holds a bachelor’s in business management and a master’s in business administration. “So, the biggest thing is, ‘Hey, I’ve done it for 30 years like this. Why is it not working now?’” he says.

“They’re so close to it they don’t recognize it, so that’s why the outside set of eyes is helpful, and that’s the biggest challenge that any advisor or coach has, me included, making sure that you prioritize the right areas.”

His wisdom met print when he contributed to a 2017 best-selling book called “Breakthrough RESULTS!” Stewart states, “I had a terrific corporate career. I did everything from a field technician to coming inside and becoming sales support, up to sales person to sales manager, to global product manager to general manager, so I’ve had the opportunity to do a lot of things, had my hands in a lot of pieces. AT&T invested in a lot of opportunity for us in education, both internally as well as externally, so those types of things I’m able to leverage, and so that’s what I try to bring when I’m working with a client.

What’s the right scenario? What’s the right sources?”

His network comes in handy. “This is where my outside activities are critical to my success because I identify the right external source that understands the scope and budget and can deliver those results as an expert to the client,” says Stewart.

“That’s the brand I’ve built over 15 years.

“For a more established business, it becomes fun again instead of a job,” he reflects, then adds, “I’ve made plenty of mistakes in my career, and my goal is not to have a business owner replicate the ones I’ve already made. That’s part of the value of having a long career.”

cal Center, of which he is a Board of Directors member. The event is set for Nov. 17 and Stewart notes that it is an event which is “complimentary to the community. We did it last year and it was a huge success, and we’re doing it again this year.”

He is also the past four-year chair of the Leadership Morris Alumni Council which is “a huge program based on community service with the Morris County Chamber [of Commerce],” Stewart says in describing it.

“That one gives a lot of insight to different foundations and activities going on in the county of Morris and I was chamber president of the Mount Olive Chamber at the time and I was recruited by them to say, ‘Hey, would you consider this?’ The timing was just perfect,” he explains.

Also a member of the Essex Catholic High School (ECHS) Alumni Foundation, Stewart is proud of that group’s adoption and support of Newark’s Cristo Rey High School. “We give multiple scholarships; actually help build up their sports teams,” he say. “We have a very active alumni foundation which I’m very proud of.”

Praises flow from his lips regarding his resident township.

“The people are great,” he says. “The cul-de-sac street that we live on, everybody knows each other, everybody helps each other, and that’s how I wound up getting involved with the township council. It’s all about community and I’m very proud of that fact.”

He continues, “It’s not politics; it’s all about with everybody what’s best for the town. We all have different backgrounds, we all voice our opinions, but everybody’s mo-

tive is the exact same thing: what’s best for the town. I’m very proud of the work that I’ve been able to support for the township council. It’s a great group to work with, all the township people.”

Stewart also notes that he loves the aesthetics of the area.

“Mt. Olive includes both Budd Lake and Flanders,” he says.

“We’re rural, yet not. I think one of the best things we ever did from a township perspective is we developed the park [Turkey Brook]. It’s like the center of Mt.Olive.”

Stewart, who is currently working on a book of his own, ponders when asked what he wants to do next, and the conversation returns to pride in his family. “Wow, that’s a tough question,” he says. “We’re [he and his wife] are very proud of our daughter who graduated from her master’s program in the UK and is now living independently in New York City, my wife has gotten involved in the food pantry and she does a lot of stuff, too. To be honest with I’m not unfulfilled; I’ve done so many things that I’m so proud and happy to do, and I’m not bored.”

He hesitates, continuing to ponder the question, then excitedly states, “Oh, I know what it could be: to shoot par in golf.” How about the elusive hole-in-one?

“Never had one,” he says with a laugh.

“I’ve come close but never had one. That’s definitely on the bucket list, I’ll tell you

that.” With a laugh, he adds another hope, that “the Jets to win a Super Bowl.”

For a guy who has accomplished much, Stewart’s definition of success at day’s end is simple but perhaps the most important.

“Coming home and seeing my wife, and that she’s healthy and the family’s healthy.”

By Cheryl Conway tudents interested in communications and television production are at the right place at Mt. Olive High School as its department offers top notch courses with the finest equipment around.

Offered to students since 2002, the program has expanded over the years with more classes, teachers, equipment, and programming and production area with two editing labs, an office, control room, television studio, interview set and even a TV production bus.

Anyone who has visited during a back-to-school night or tour would surely be impressed with the department’s offerings, especially with its professionally designed studio set from its equipment, staging, backdrops and lighting.

Courses are offered to all students in grades nine through 12, and by the time they complete all the classes if their interests pursue, they will have enough knowledge to take with them as a professional in the field. Students, who take the advance courses of TV 3 and TV 4, can get six automatic college credits from Fairleigh Dickinson University in Madison.

Offered as electives, students sign up according to their interests. Skills they learn range from writing, interviewing and reporting, to editing, camera operation and other field equipment, lighting, sound, producing and broadcasting, to name a few. Through the program students will develop in multiple ways such as gaining real world experience, job skills, global communication skills, team work, time and stress management, creativity.

According to its mission statement “Mt. Olive High School’s Communications Department is committed to creating a quality real world educational experience. Yet more importantly we take pride in inspiring students to have high moral character. Creating the leaders of tomorrow who exemplify respect, professionalism, dedication, creativity, confidence and modesty.”

Compared to other school districts, MOHS’s offerings in TV Production are much more involved and advanced.

The program has expanded over the years with more course offerings, teachers and equipment.

“Each year we are trying to improve to get kids a more professional environment to work with,” says Chris

Praml of Rockaway has been working as a TV Production teacher at MOHS for the past 10 years. He says the program was only three years old when he started there and he is amazed by its growth.

Established in 2002, Mt. Olive Television was created “as a way to enhance student learning in the Mt. Olive High School’s television production program through the use of a closed circuit broadcast system,” which allows MOTV to broadcast to approximately 1,500 viewers at MOHS. Eight years later, on Jan. 15, 2010, MOTV launched two cable channels based out of its TV Studio at MOHS: Cablevision channel 21 and FiOS channel 32. With these channels, growth began allowing MOTV to broadcast to more than 24,000 viewers in the community.

More classes were added as more students showed interest.

When Praml first started, MOHS offered three TV1 classes; two TV 2 classes; and one TV 3 class, with 12 students in one class, 10 in another and only five in another.

Soon the elective got more popular and students had to waitlist the classes and were turned away, says Praml.

So they grew the department by adding more classes, moving the department to a different wing of the school- it has moved three times since 2002- and adding another teacher, he says. Vivianne Bolen is the other MOTV teacher and is producer of MOTV. Currently, MOHS offers five sections of TV 1; two sections of TV

2; one section of TV 3; one section of TV 4; two sections of Communications in TV and Social Media; and one section of Web and LED Video Design.

This year 220 students are taking classes in TV Production, says Praml, who attended Livingston High School, received a bachelor’s in communication and broadcasting from William Paterson followed by his teaching certificate. There are 22 students in each class.

According to Guidance Counselor Robert Feltman fewer students are being turned away since another teacher has been added and more classes are offered.

“Before we hired a second teacher in the TV program two to three years ago, we used to turn many more students away,” says Feltman. “There is no “wait list” for students to enter TV production.”

Students pick their elective course for the following year every January, says Praml.

With all this growth, “MOTV has developed into one of the premier television and media programs in the state,” according to the website. “Featuring a fully digital television studio and editing lab, state of the art wireless camera system, a mobile production bus, drones, steadicam rig and field production equipment.”

Says Praml, “We revamped Morning Madness, built a production vehicle from a bus” with a full wire camera system so students can broadcast live games with the bus going out live to the field.

Students also get to sign up for full crew productions by using the MOTV bus. The “gutted old bus” is fully equipped to cover events away from the school building, explains Praml, such as to the football field, soccer and baseball fields. Eight students hop on board assigned to various jobs as part of the production team and then another 10 students join in for assistance to shadow or help, says Praml. Two productions are done every marking period.

For students who would like to write for a newspaper, MOHS offers a newspaper club.

Students And Teachers Enjoy Program “I always liked teaching,” says Praml, who has also taught martial arts and has worked as a freelancer with videography and videotape operations. “Passing on knowledge to the next generation” has always been his interest.

“High school teachers made and impact” on him, he says, especially his TV Production teacher from Livingston High School, Steve Milano, who also works as MOTV’s studio technician.

Out of all the TV Production programs offered at other schools, with 45 in N.J., Praml says Mt. Olive’s is top quality, next to Livingston High School which offers even that much more. Programs at other schools vary, offering one camera to a whole production studio, like Mt. Olive.

“It runs the gamut,” says Praml. Smaller programs are offered in area school districts such as Randolph, Roxbury, Madison, Chatham and Kinnelon, he adds.

Praml enjoys teaching TV Production as he says, “It’s something different. It’s creative. Live aspect, it’s fast paced, deadline, pressure.”

Students who take TV Production courses are not disappointed.

It is a “really good experience being able to work with a crew,” says senior Julia Davis, who plans to study TV production in college. She has enjoyed learning what it is like to work in the field, especially in her role as co-director of video for the new virtual yearbook. “I like being able to be creative, making an idea into something you can watch the process.”

Another senior, Rebecca Stone, who has taken all four years of TV Production, says “There’s nothing really like it in the school that offers all four years. We really have good teachers. I like live things, working with everyone under pressure with the show.” Stone has been editing for the virtual yearbook and plans to attend college for communications.

“MOTV is proud to have laid the foundation for its alumni who have gone on to many jobs/careers, internships and institutes of higher education,” as stated on the website.

“In the future MOTV will continue to evolve and grow with the industry. We will continue to bring our students experiences that will help them develop as young adults and prepare them for their future.

“MOTV offers students the opportunity to experience the world of television production in a hands-on, professional atmosphere,” the website states. “Our strategy is to try to keep up with emerging technology and needs of the industry to prepare students for their future careers in all forms of media.”

According to Praml, “in theory students can get a job or internship” just by taking the course offered through MOHS TV Production. He does recommend that students continue with courses in college in order to mature into young adults and build contacts for even greater opportunities.

The number of students who have gone onto top notch universities and pursued professionals in the field is quite impressive.

On the MOHS website, alumni are listed who have gone to work in the field. They are working as reporters, associate producers, senior script coordinators, video editors, production assistants, news producers and graphic coordinators to name a few.

Internships have been offered in a variety of companies such as NBC, CNN, Fox News, Disney Broadcast Teams, News 12 NJ, WRNJ and the Wendy Williams Show.

Budd Lake Woman Celebrates 100 Year Milestone Birthday to walk very far.”

“She’s very sweet. She doesn’t look it either, 100,” Jelis adds.

Siriani lived for many years in Yuma, Ariz. before moving with her husband to Des Moines, Iowa. After his passing, she returned to Yuma; upon her mother’s passing several years later, she was lured to Budd Lake by her remaining relatives.

“She was all alone in Arizona,” Gast recalls. Siriani is the last of her immediate family on both sides. “We said, you’ve got to come back here to be with family.” She’s been in Budd Lake for 19 years now.

Although Gast tends to her “Auntie’s” needs, Siriani lives alone and prepares her own foods. She is hard of hearing and has limited vision, so Gast developed a kitchen plan that allows Siriani to prepare foods more easily.

“We worked out different things so that she can still do some cooking on her own because she still likes to cook. She’s got a toaster oven she uses, and she has her deep fry,” Gast explains.

Gast says “Auntie Edna” never thought she would live so long, and certainly never thought her only sister would die before her.

Siriani lost her father when she was two years old to walking typhoid; he was only 23. Her sister also had it, but recovered.

“We say Auntie’s going to outlive all of us,” Gast says. Siriani’s extended family now includes a great-great-great-nephew, who is just three months old. “She wouldn’t mind living her life again.”

By Bonnie Cavanaugh ne hundred years ago in 1918, America was entrenched in World War I, the Spanish flu was killing millions of people worldwide, and the Romanov family, including young Anastasia, was executed by the Bolsheviks.

And on Oct. 9, 1918 in Oklahoma, Edna Siriani was born. The centenarian and Budd Lake resident was honored on her birthday last month with a lunch celebration at the Budd Lake Diner, planned by diner owner Fontini Jelis, better known as Faye, and Siriani’s niece and caretaker, Tammy Gast, also of Budd Lake.

“Faye said you’ve got to bring her in for lunch on her birthday,” Gast says. The pair had reached out to Mayor Robert Greenbaum but his schedule was tight and he couldn’t make it, she adds.

“It was a big party,” Gast says. “The police and rescue squad all showed up. Two officers came and had coffee with us, and the rescue squad and customers all came over to wish her a happy birthday.”

“I said, why don’t you bring her to the diner, we’ll treat her,” Jelis notes, adding, “A nice lady I didn’t even know picked up the check.”

Going to the diner is one of Siriani’s favorite activities, where she can socialize with the other customers and Faye and the wait staff, whom she considers friends. Siriani, through her niece, says she enjoyed her party and is grateful.

“She absolutely loves going to the Budd Lake Diner,” Gast says.

“They all know her here.”

Jelis says she remembers Siriani coming to the diner “forever.”

“She walks in her own,” Jelis says. “I see her at least once a week, sometimes more. When they’re ready to come in, they call so they can have one of the booths in the front. They don’t want

A Studio Sensation - Theater Dance Takes Center Stage In Mt. Olive “They knew they were legends and were amazing people,” remembered Michel of working with the MGM stars. “Mickey was a genius in every sense of the word, very creative.”

By Katie Young t’s just after 9 o’clock on a Saturday morning and Theater Dance Center is already buzzing with activity.

The hallways are filled with dancers and their parents, who are helping to change shoes, strip off coats and hurry their children into one of three studios, where the music is already on and teachers are leading warm-ups.

It’s a scene that will continue for the next few hours and happens nearly every day at this popular studio located in the heart of Flanders off of Route 206.

Theatre Dance Center has been a part of the Mt. Olive community for nearly 28 years, though its beginning looked far different from the bustling scene it is today.

For Millene Michel, the studio’s co-owner and artistic director, the journey has been the gratifying realization of a childhood dream come true for this former professional dancer turned instructor and successful business owner.

The daughter of ballroom dancers, Michel and her three younger siblings were each enrolled in a local dance school in their hometown of St. Louis, Mo. Despite being just 3 years old, Michel says she knew she had found her passion in life.

“It was an immediate love,” said Michel laughing. “Once I stepped on the stage at my first recital I felt at home.”

Michel remained focused on her dream of dancing professionally throughout her adolescence, often missing out on social events-even her senior prom—to train.

“People ask if I regret it and my answer is no,” said Michel.

“My high school was through dance and to this day I have dear friends that are like sisters that I have through dance and I wouldn’t change that for an instant,” she said.

It wasn’t all work and no fun. Michel fondly remembers her ‘awesome’ summer job working as a dancer at a nearby Six Flags Amusement Park while she was a teenager. It was a grueling schedule of two or three shows a day, but an experience that expanded Michel’s skill set, introducing her to marionette work and even skating on a faux ice rink as part of her performances.

Years of hard work paid off when she stamped her ticket to New York City, earning a full scholarship to train at the prestigious Joffrey Ballet School. From there her professional career took off.

Over the course of a decade Michel performed for audiences in Atlantic City, Las Vegas and even Japan.

Then came the chance of a lifetime; a role in the chorus for the Broadway national tour of, “Sugar Babies,” which starred Mickey Rooney and Ann Miller as the leads. The burlesque-style comedy earned a Tony nomination for best musical in 1980.

A recent issue of “Playbill” described the show as ‘vaudeville-era sketches’ which ran for 1,208 performances during its run in New York.

“They knew they were legends and were amazing people,” remembered Michel of working with the MGM stars. “Mickey was a genius in every sense of the word, very creative.”

Michel, who also toured with the musical for two years, said Rooney would often sit at a piano and just play, while

wowing his cast members with stories of other famous movie stars from Hollywood’s golden age including Judy Garland.

Professional life as a dancer did eventually end for Michel when she decided to ‘settle down’ with her husband who had just taken a job in Flanders. Pregnant with their first child, Michel was working at an Oriental rug dealer and taught aerobics to make money.

Not willing to let go of her goal of becoming a dance instructor, Michel also took a job teaching at a dance studio when a touch of fate stepped in. The school was where Mary Ellen Volz trained as child, and had returned to teach occasionally.

The pair was asked to collaborate on a small ballet production and both women say that’s when they just naturally hit it off.

Unlike Michel, Volz had never dreamed of owning a dance studio. She had gone to college to become a school teacher and had just had twin girls when the pair met. But as their friendship grew outside dance, so did the realization that the two could run a successful business of their own. ”Everyone was impressed with the work we did and said we should open our own studio,” said Michel.

After Michel moved to the area with her family she began convincing Volz to open their own place and shortly thereafter Theater Dance Center was born.

The pair began teaching a class one night a week in the fall of 1991 out of the Knights of Columbus just off Main Street in Flanders. With just 35 students it was a gamble for both women who young children at home, and steady jobs teaching elsewhere.

They also had little experience when it came to running a small business.

“I had worked in sales so it taught me how to work with a customer, how to treat them, how to sell your product and how to market it,” explained Michel. “But I didn’t go to college; my college was my dancing and life.”

Luckily, Theater Dance Center was a success within the community and with its students. The next year enrollment more than quadrupled to 150 students and Theater Dance Center moved to Village Mall to accommodate the influx of dancers.

For nearly three decades dancers have been taking classes in all forms of dance, including ballet, tap and jazz. Many of the studio’s earliest students are now back, bringing their own children to classes, and many of its teachers are also alumni. Michel says she feels a great sense of pride that her school has blossomed in to a family of its own.

That sense of family is also felt by her dancers, said former student Melissa Barrow, who is currently

In an email, Barrow said Michel “treats all of her students as her daughters and cares deeply about all of her students.”

“She does a great job at making you work hard but also having fun while dancing!,” said Barrow. “She has always been a mother figure to me as well and has really helped me through a lot non dancing wise as well.”

Keeping dance fun is becoming increasingly challenging for Michel, Volz and their faculty. The proliferation of shows such as “You Think You Can Dance” or “Dancing with the Stars” has placed a greater emphasis on competitions.

Both women say the industry of dancing competitions has exploded in recent years, and while they worry about the pressure being placed on their dancers, they also recognize the need to provide the experience for their students.

“Times have changed and the dance world has changed quite a bit,” said Volz. “The competitive nature has pushed us to continue learning and staying up on latest trends.”

While many students and parents may be asking for this type of training, Michel still feels there’s more to learning the art of dance than winning a trophy.

“I have a moral obligation to my students as a dance teacher but as a human being to instill upon them good values and discipline and sense of team work and compassion.”

Theater Dance Center does have a competitive team, the Shooting Stars. Made up of 60 dancers from ages 8 to 18, the team spends up to 15 hours a week at the studio honing their skills.

While some, like Barrow, hope to pursue dancing as a professional career, Michel says that’s not the case for the majority of her students. Just a handful have gone on to have professional dancing careers while many have danced on competitive colle-

giate teams or gone to work within the dance industry in one form or another.

This is why Michel and her faculty are not just worried about form and posture, but building character and a strong work ethic which her dancers can use in any facet of their lives.

“We want to teach them a love of the ability to make their body do things they didn’t think they could do, and a belief they can do it if they work hard,” she said.

Theater Dance Center also strives to show students how their skills can be used to benefit those other than themselves.

For the last eight years students in the school’s competitive and community outreach teams have performed in an annual gala each January to raise money for various cancer charities.

Michel says the idea came to her after a faculty member was diagnosed in 2008 and Volz also lost a childhood friend to the disease a few years later.

It was while they were planning their first show that Michel was also diagnosed with breast cancer, making the effort immensely personal.

Michel says Theater Dance Center’s galas have raised nearly $80 thousand dollars. This year’s event will benefit The Fighting Children’s Cancer Foundation, a New Jersey based nonprofit which provides financial assistance to families dealing with pediatric cancer.

The gala takes place on Jan. 20, 2019 at 1 p.m. in Mt. Olive High School’s Performing Arts Center and funds are raised solely through ticket sales, which can be purchased in advance at the studio or at the door.

From teaching her dancers the importance of giving back, to perfecting their turns, Michel says she feels incredibly fortunate to have built Theater Dance Center into what it is today.

“I’m lucky; I get to take a childhood passion and make it my livelihood, not many can say that,” she said.
