Not All Headaches Are Created Equal Almost everyone has experienced a headache, at some point in their life, to varying degrees. In fact, roughly 45 million Americans suffer from Headaches each year. In today’s world, most people reach into the medicine cabinet for one of the various pain relievers to alleviate their head pain. But what happens when that doesn’t work? Or, the headaches become more frequent and more painful? Some get headaches so often and so painful, they even take prescription drugs with side effects and no avail. But have you ever stopped to think, “What is causing my headache?”

Headaches and more severe headaches, known as Migraines, can be caused by various triggers including foods, chemicals or preservatives in foods, allergens in the environment, chemicals in cleaning products or herbicides/pesticides, sinus congestion, tension in the neck or jaw, lack of sleep, dehydration, stress, and the list goes on… Sometimes the cause is completely unknown and with no relief the patient can be left hopeless, debilitated and in pain. An assessment by an Acupuncturist can often identify and treat imbalances (that are causing the headaches) that are unknown to the patient previously.

In Chinese Medicine not all headaches are created equally.

Rather, during an assessment, we evaluate the individual patient on many levels to determine their exact symptoms (i.e Is the headache frontal? One sided? Behind the eyes? Is there nausea?

Frequency and intensity of pain?....) and if there are any triggers.

We take a whole body approach and assess the patient’s physical condition as well as their constitution, emotional health, diet and lifestyle. Unlike the blanket treatment western medicine offers which is typically some type of pain reliever, Chinese Medicine finds a specific treatment for each patient based on their

individual symptoms. Five patients suffering “headaches” may receive five completely different treatments. By addressing the root cause, Acupuncture can be a safe way to prevent and treat various types of headaches, without the unwanted side effects of medications.

Based on the individual assessment and diagnosis, tiny needles are inserted into various points on the body. Depending on the case, small electrodes can be attached to specific needles that elicit a small electrical current. The feeling of the electric stimulation on the needles is a comfortable sensation that generally elicits a feeling of tingling, tapping or heaviness. The electric stimulation enhances the release of specific neurochemicals which aids in the treatment of headaches. The needles are typically retained for 20-30 minutes, during which the patient is left to relax and take a nap.

Acupuncture is known to be effective and can offer long standing results, but it is not always a quick fix. Especially if the headaches are chronic, several treatments may be required to achieve the full result. Again, this is because it is addressing the root cause and not just covering up symptoms like other treatments.

By Julie Ross In a nutshell the vison of the Mt. Olive Health Department is “Healthy people making healthy choices in a healthy environment.” Its mission is “to prevent disease, promote healthy behaviors, and ensure accessibility of health services.” Both the vision and the mission are being realized through an extensive roster of services and programs.

Although all 565 municipalities in the state are mandated to provide the services of a local health department, not all have one of their own, says Mt. Olive Health Department Health Officer and Director Trevor J. Weigle. Municipalities can contract for services with another municipality’s health department, or be a member of a regional health commission. However, Mt. Olive reaps the benefits of bypassing both options in favor of having a dedicated health department, as do more than 90 municipalities

statewide.

A dedicated municipal health department “has a closer relationship with its residents,” observes Weigle. Such a department, he notes, “can respond quicker and provide a wider range of services. Department staff is also available to meet and work with other township departments.”

The Mt. Olive Health Department offers services in six major areas: environmental health, vital statistics, animal control, nursing, health education, and senior transportation. Through shared services agreements, the agency also provides public health services to the Boroughs of Wharton, Netcong, and Mt. Arlington, and to the town of Dover. It also provides animal control services to Byram, Washington, Mt. Arlington, and Wharton.

“In one capacity or another, we service a population of more than 76,000 residents of Mt. Olive and surrounding towns,”

On the environmental health front, department personnel conducts inspections and issues permits to retail food establishments, recreational bathing facilities, massage parlors, body art facilities, youth camps, and campgrounds as a way to ensure that these businesses operate in a safe and sanitary manner. Because of its rural location, many homes in Mt. Olive are serviced by private wells and individual septic systems. To help prevent pollution to ground and surface waters, members of the department inspect and issue permits for new septic systems, well installations, and alterations to current systems.

Additionally, the Environmental Division inspects residents’ septic tanks every three years. Whenever units in multi-dwellings such as apartments are vacated and before new occupants arrive,

staff from this area of the department perform an inspection to ensure that suitable public safety, health, and welfare standards are maintained.

For its part, the Vital Statistics Division issues certified copies of birth, marriage, and death certificates. Personnel also take applications for anyone from Mt. Olive who wishes to get married. The division summarizes data, such as causes of death, for department reporting and health planning. Staff members from this division also perform the office’s reception, fiscal, and clerical duties.

“Our animal control officers are responsible for a variety of services as they relate to the licensing, control, and protection of animals in the Township,” Weigle continues. For example, the division issues dog and cat licenses, responds to animal-re-

lated complaints, and inspects kennels. Because prevention of rabies is the most import role of animal control, the agency sponsors two free rabies inoculation clinics each year and responds to incidents involving dog and cat bites, as well as to other incidents that could possibly result in exposure to rabies. Additionally, staff handle the quarantine of domestic animals involved in biting incidents and send specimens of wildlife like bats, raccoons, and skunks to a state laboratory for rabies testing.

In keeping with the health department’s key role of preventing the spread of communicable and reportable diseases, for example, hepatitis A, B, and C; influenza; measles; lyme disease; salmonella; shigella; and tuberculosis, individuals from this division follow up with patients and health care providers when these diseases are reported. Efforts are made to contain contagion and spread of the disease and identify others who may have come into contact with the reported patient. Public health nurses audit the medical charts of public school and daycare students to

ensure that they have received all required immunizations.

There is also the Health Education division, whose staff is tasked with bringing informative programming and materials that address health behaviors directly to the public. A health educator remains available to provide tailored programs to community groups upon request and to check the availability of resources that can deliver healthcare education programming or collateral.

“In the last couple of years, we have begun producing monthly health awareness posters and information for distribution/display in Town Hall, at the library, and in our shared services towns,” Weigle points out. “We also now conduct a monthly live interview with (radio station) WRNJ on a timely health topic.”

Meanwhile, through the township’s senior transportation program, similar to a “Dial-a-Ride” setup, senior citizens who lack other means of transportation receive door-to-door rides to doctor’s appointments, physical therapy sessions, and other outpatient services and visits. Group transportation for shopping trips, Senior Club meetings, and the Morris County nutrition program is also provided, once a week, twice each month, and three times per week, respectively. So, too, is a monthly special senior citizens’ trip which, according to Weigle, is “always a hit.” Several fun-filled events are held each May to commemorate Older American’s Month, and an Annual Senior Picnic is a highlight every July.

“This year,” Weigle reports, “we hosted our 43rd

He adds that while the Mt. Olive Health Department runs many successful programs and clinics, its female cancer screening clinics, child health clinics, and animal rabies vaccination clinics have a particularly large following. However, the senior transportation program is said to be experiencing the most significant increases in year-over-year demand because of the area’s growing senior population.

Such an extensive roster of services and programs is supported by nine full-time employees, among them a health officer/director of health, deputy director of health, public health nurse, registrar, deputy registrar, animal control officer, chief registered environmental health specialist, senior registered environmental health specialist, and registered environmental health specialist.

A staff of 10 part-time employees includes a senior transportation

program coordinator, five senior transportation program drivers, two animal control officers, and two public health nurses.

Weigle notes that the department’s staff is highly trained, and most positions require a license or certification as well as a college degree. Many of the staff are members of or hold leadership positions on the boards of statewide professional associations, such as the New Jersey Environmental Health Association, New Jersey Association of Public Health Nurse Administrators, New Jersey Association of County and City Health Officials, New Jersey Certified Animal Control Officers Association, New Jersey Registrars Association, and the New Jersey Society for Public Health Education.

Several staff members have recently won awards or earned additional certifications. Helen Giles, the department’s full-time public health nurse, recently received the New Jersey

Derrick Webb, the department’s deputy director, was the recent recipient of the New Jersey Environmental Health Association’s President’s Award for Meritorious Contributions Towards Environmental Health. This year, Webb and Weigle, along with three other Mt. Olive Township employees, received their nationally recognized Certified Public Manager designation.

Not all staff is paid staff, though. Often, volunteers who are looking to engage with the community or attain a better understanding of its functions donate their time and/or talents to the department.

“We are also always happy to host students as interns for their college graduation requirements,” Weigle says. Two student interns, one of whom is an undergraduate student and the other, a graduate student—presently work in the department. Both students are enrolled at Montclair State University.

If all goes according to plan, department staff will have more to do going forward, because additional initiatives are on the roster.

In late August, the department held its first Mt. Olive Health Improvement Coalition meeting.

“More than 30 local stakeholders joined us for a kick-off meeting to start a community health assessment,” Weigle says.

“These assessments are typically done geographically at the county level. Health departments serving populations at the municipal level, however, are left to use county-level data that may not fully represent their community. This lack of munic-

ipal-level data, however, forces us to plan programs based on insufficient information.”

The local health assessment is aimed at addressing the absence of municipal-level data and at giving the department access to data that will be used as a base for its programs and interventions. Partners are working with the department to conduct focus groups with residents and key informant interviews with stakeholders in the community who are knowledgeable about Mt. Olive’s health needs. With this and other data, the Coalition will prioritize health issues and begin working on ways to address them. Residents will be kept up-to-date on the Coalition’s efforts through the Mt. Olive Health Department’s website, www. mtolivetownship.com, and Facebook pages and will have the opportunity to review and make comments on a draft health assessment report.

“The other big project we are working on is preparation for national health department accreditation,” Weigle states. “We will have to show the Public Health Accreditation Board that we are adhering to more than 100 measures from 12 different domains of public health department core capacity.”

Toward this end, the department is currently creating or updating its strategic plan, workforce development plan, emergency operations plans, quality improvement efforts, and performance management systems. Two internal teams, a continuous quality improvement team and an accreditation preparation team, have been formed to move the work forward. The department’s goal is to become nationally accredited by the end of 2020.

by Melissa Begley shy little guy in the ice rink coaxed off the sidelines by a caring coach is how it all began for Kevin Murphy, now a senior at Hackettstown High School.

Pamela Murphy, team manager of a new middle school level ice- hockey team, reveals her son’s humble beginnings when discussing the genesis of the team. Murphy recalls how her two sons began playing hockey in an area that appeared to be dominated by soccer, football, lacrosse, basketball, and various other sports that are a bit more accessible.

Murphy’s oldest son, Kevin, was at Chill Out in Hackettstown which was a no frills establishment that collapsed when a Zamboni went through the ice. Coach John Sorg noticed him on the side of the rink and coaxed him onto the ice by saying, “We really could use another player out here. You would really be doing us a favor.” Quickly, ice hockey found its way into the hearts of the entire Murphy family.

Murphy’s younger son, Liam, soon followed suit and both boys were hooked. They loved hockey and they got involved on various recreational and travel teams, including New Jersey Freeze, throughout the years. At one point

Murphy realized her sons would not be able to represent their high school because there was not a hockey team in Hackettstown. Therefore she came to the decision that she had to do something about it. Rather than sit and complain, she started organizing and mobilizing.

She poked around and found that Mt. Olive and Hopatcong had a co-op for hockey. Due to low enrollment, those two towns had been playing together at the high school level for some time. She thought that maybe the co-op could extend it radius just a little more.

Murphy got in touch with the hockey coach at Mt. Olive High School, Mike Behre, as well as the athletic director, David Fellini, and they discussed this possibility. As a result, the three schools now compete together and the team is thriving. Murphy states, “None of this could’ve happened without Coach Behre and Coach Fellini.”

However, Murphy didn’t stop there; she continued to look to the future. Her son, Liam, is currently in the eighth grade at Great Meadows Middle School and Murphy was interested in the possibility of giving these future high school teammates a chance to play together sooner. Again Murphy started talking to people and seeing what she could do to get a middle school team started.

The purpose of creating a middle school team that participates in the Aspen Ice Middle School League in the Highlands Division is to prepare for the long term. The goal is to introduce the boys to one another as middle schoolers to make the transition to the high school team a bit smoother.

This middle school team is comprised of boys from New Jersey Freeze in Randolph, New Jersey Colonials and the Long Valley Wolfpack, as well as some players from Roxbury and other nearby towns. This team does not come out of Mt. Olive Middle School. Without this league, high school would be the first time they got together. Now the boys get a chance to meet, get to know each other, learn each other’s moves by the time high school rolls around.

The games are set to be held on Sundays and there is a roster of 20. The team has three wins under its belt so far and the season is set to run until Nov. 18. All the games are considered home games and are played in Montville, Randolph, Rockaway, Long Valley and Roxbury at Aspen Ice. Behre continues to be an integral part of the puzzle as well but credits the parents with the idea of creating the team. Behre notes that he was a fan of this idea because the numbers are

low at the high school with just 14 or 15 players currently. Having experienced a drought in interest for the last few years Behre is excited to see some new players rising up the ranks. Identifying the kids coming down the pike and getting them together at a younger age has helped renew interest in the sport overall.

Behre notes that he enjoys working with the four fathers who were willing to step up and volunteer their time to work with the players. Working closely with the parent coaches to discuss the offenses that will be run at the high school level, Behre is able to lend a hand and has also been able to attend two of the three games and witnessed the victories that have taken place. He sees good things in the future for Mt. Olive ice hockey and is excited to see the talent and the numbers headed his way.

The head coach of the middle school team is Tom Gargiulo, who is also a parent on the team. He is assisted by Frank Korszoloski, Pat McGarry and Anthony Luciani. Gargiulo states that “Pam should get most of the credit for this [team].

After playing at Rutgers, Gargiulo coached there for a time. He has since coached at the recreational and travel levels for the Hunterton Bears, the Bridgewater Bears, West Orange High School and had just started his 24th year of coaching. Gargiulo explains that he enjoys this program for various reasons and works closely with the high school coach to make sure the players will be prepared to compete at the next level. The coaches discuss game strategies and offenses that will be implemented in high school.

Gargiulo talks about how sports have changed throughout the years. He says, “When we were younger, there wasn’t the specialization that there is now. There is so much competition between rec and travel programs. So many young kids are sticking to just one sport at a young age. It used to be that sports didn’t get serious until high school.”

Gargiulo is also a fan of players being coached by different people. Different coaches, he explained, value various skills and can bring out different abilities in different kids.

Mt. Olive Community Bible Church: Where Everyone Is Treated Like Family “The reason the congregation chose a new name was to avoid being labeled as a certain denomination and to appeal to a wider spectrum of church seekers who may come from a variety of religious backgrounds,” said Lines.

By Elsie Walker The Mt. Olive Bible Church has had a Pastor Lines leading it for more than 50 years. It has not been a single pastor, but two: Father and son.

The late Neil Malcolm Lines first came to the church in 1960. In 1991, his son, Neil Bruce Lines, graduated seminary and joined his dad, taking a role in youth ministry.

“We worked side by side,” noted Neil Bruce Lines. After his father’s death, the church voted for the younger Lines to take the pastor’s role and he has been in that for the past 26 years. “Family” is a key word in describing this church, however, it isn’t all about blood relations.

Mary Sanders of Rockaway has attended the church since 1987.

When asked what the church is best known for, she shared, “This is a hard one to put into words.

It is an experience; it’s how we treat everyone like family.

Our doors are Pastor Neil Lines and his wife, Jessica. open to everyone. We are always willing to help whoever needs help.

If someone needs a lawn mowed, someone in the congregation will help. If someone is in need, it’s all hands on deck.”

The church also has an extended family of sorts, from local nursing homes to missionaries in Africa. Sanders noted of Lines’ influence, “we have a compassionate, understanding, spiritual, wise and caring pastor.”

The current Lines noted that at first he wasn’t going to enter the ministry. He had planned to go into family counseling. During his studies for that career, he shared that he began to think, “it would be good to find out about man from God’s perspective,” so he attended Dallas Theological Seminary. There, he shared he had begun to think,

“God was grooming me for a pastor’s role.” After he graduated in 1991, he went back to his dad’s church, feeling a calling to be there. He went in to be a youth pastor. They served the church together, the younger Lines filling in for his father the last year of his life as his health started to fail.

Now, at 53, Lines leads a church he describes as “alive and well and growing.”

What is now known as the Mt. Olive Community Bible Church has a history dating back to 1753. Its first two church structures were shared with other denominations, and the church name denoted a location rather than a denomination: the Roxbury Church for the first and the Schooley Mountain Church for the second.

In 1855, the then Baptist congregation built a structure all its own. The new structure was built of stone drawn from the mountains by oxen on sledge and was located on Drakestown Rd. In the late 1800s, the church changed its name from the Schooley Mountain Church to the Mt. Olive Baptist Church.

Pastor Lines explained the story of how the current church building and name came to be: “In reference to our present church, it was built in the mid 70’s by our church as a Sunday school building. We allowed the public schools to use it during the week in the late 70’s. In the early 80’s, the town no longer needed the space. We subsequently renovated the inside to accommodate our need for a larger body of parishioners and moved in, making it our new and present church. We continued to use our old church until it was donated to the town.” The old church’s bell had been removed from that building’s belfry due to structural concerns, and it had been brought with the move to the new location to be used as a memorial marker. “After we donated the old church to the town, at some point later, they asked if we would consider returning the bell,” explains Lines. “We agreed it was best from a historic viewpoint.”

In 2003, the church name was changed to The Mount Olive Community Bible Church.

Worship service is at 11a.m. on Sundays. Sanders described it as a “blended mixture,” noting that they have, not only praise bands (an adult band and a youth

band that plays one Sunday a month), but also sing traditional hymns. Also, enhancing the worship on occasion are a flutist and an interpretive dancer. Nursery care is provided during worship.

The church also has a variety of Sunday School offerings from 9:30 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. on Sundays. Jessica Lines, wife of the pastor, noted that for ages five to grade seven, there are the Kingdom Kids Children’s Sunday School Classes. There is a high school class for grades eight to 12 and there is an adult class.

“We offer free transportation,” she noted. In addition, the church holds an annual Vacation Bible School.

“Our children’s Sunday School is unique; they start in class and have Bible time, then go and play games and then have a full breakfast,” said Sanders. “During church after praise songs, we do dismiss the children from grades one six for children’s church, which members of our church rotate in teaching.”

For girls, the church also offers the Explorer Girls (EG), every Wednesday from 6:45 p.m.-8:15 p.m. Explorer Girls is part of EG Ministries Inc, which is based in Pennsylvania. Sanders, who is the church EG coordinator, noted, Explorer Girls is an all-girl group learning about Jesus and life. It’s what [other] churches call their

In addition to those previously mentioned offerings, other educational opportunities include a women’s Bible study and a Bible study for all that meets on Tuesday nights at the church.

Outreach, missions, and fellowship are also part of the life of this congregation. For example, Neil Lines shared that the church has a Deacon’s fund through which it has helped people in need. We have appetizers and pick different pieces of jewelry we may like. All the leftover jewelry goes to a battered women’s shelter so the children can pick out jewelry for their moms for Christmas. With Explorer Girls Ministries Inc. we do many events. One big one is in November. We serve a turkey dinner to the girls and their families.”

The church just ended its annual coat drive on Oct. 15, with the coats collected going to the Salvation Army.

Besides collections, the church is active outside the local area through its mission work.

“Our Missions Program is designed to support five current missionaries in the United States and outside of the U.S. [a married couple in Togo, Africa],” said Jessica Lines. “We have a monthly mission’s budget in which we disperse funds to them to help with their needs. We also highlight one missionary a month updating the congregation on their ministry. Occasionally, our missionaries will visit the church personally and fellowship with us.”

“Its strength and cardio in one!” he says. “The reason why the calorie burn is so high, 300 -500 calories in 35 minutes, is because rowing requires you to use both strength and cardio endurance at once.”

Tylee and his trainers recommend two or three classes of NitroRow a week. Those who have taken the class so far have enjoyed the class especially how the time seems to just “row” by.

“All of the class participants say the same thing, the 35 minutes flies by because it`s so much fun!” says Tylee.

NitroRow Is Born Like spinning, rowing has gone from a competitive outdoor sport to one of the growing new trends in group exercise, explains Tylee.

“Indoor rowing is the perfect exercise for people of all body types and fitness levels, from beginners to professional athletes,” he says. “Rowing is the new spin.”

Always keeping a close eye on the trends within the fitness industry, Tylee noticed the emergence of this phenomenon in New York City and Los Angeles, Calif.

“These trendy city studios were using Concept 2 rowers or Water rowers, equipment that’s been around for a number of years now,” says Tylee.

During a meeting with a sales rep from Technogym, Tylee learned of a brand-new product it was launching- a Wi-Fi connected rowing machine called the SkillRow. Technogym had teamed up with Olympic athletes to create a product for dry land training that has all the benefits of authentic rowing, he explains.

“It’s the closest thing to actually rowing on the water and the first indoor rowing machine capable of improving anaerobic power, aerobic capacity and neuromuscular abilities in a single solution,” says Tylee.

Deciding to be proactive, Tylee visited Technogym’s corporate offices in Fairfield to try out this new rowing machine and “he knew the moment he sat on it and started rowing, this was going to be a game changer,” according to a press release from NitroFlex. “Fast forward one and a half years and NitroRow opened its doors.”

NitroRow is the first studio of its kind in the U.S. “We pride ourselves on being a small-town gym, providing big city amenities,” he says.

The NitroRow studio is a sight to see with its red brick walls, large skylights, steel columns, stylish wood plank floor and two 8-foot ceiling fans to keep cool during each session. Two huge 85inch TV screens show users real-time data on class participants.

The group indoor rowing class consists of 12 rowers plus one for the instructor. Each class lasts 35 minutes and consists of varying intensity levels set by the instructor.

“The class is interactive and participants follow the rowing pace set by the class instructor,” he says.

“The large screen TVs display an overview of the whole class, showing individual changes in intensity by color providing motivation,” says Tylee. “Class participants get the chance to row together in total synchronicity as a real crew, following the set pace and monitoring their biometrics. A NitroRow class gives new energy to the entire studio, bringing class participants together for competitions, races and keeping them on track towards their individual

fitness goals.”

By Bonnie Cavanaugh Golden Burrito, a fast-casual Mexican dining spot in the Flanders Village Mall, offers fresh, authentic foods with a family touch.

It’s run by Marcos Polanco and his wife, Valerie Cosme, who together built the concept and developed the menu. The unit opened in December.

The couple recently sold their first restaurant, Taqueria las Mexicanas, in Caldwell, which they’d owned for three and a half years, to fully concentrate on this one.

“We liked this food concept better,” Polanco says.

While he is Dominican, the idea of working with Mexican food came both from his 20 years of experience in the restaurant industry, and just knowing a lot about Mexican food.

“We decided to go into the adventure of opening our restaurant in 2015,” he says. His wife’s Mexican heritage also helped guide the concept, as some of the recipes came directly from Cosme’s family.

“We called people in Mexico to get some of our recipes, her grandmother and friends,” Polanco says.

All the menu items are made from scratch, down to the sauces:

mild, hot, and “way hot,” he says. The menu features all types of Mexican snack foods and entrees, from tacos and burritos to Mexican tortas, or sandwiches, plus Mexican bowls, Tex-Mex quesadillas, soups and salads. All the ingredients are supplied by Best Mexican Foods of New York.

“It’s addictive,” he says, “It’s hot—but you want to keep eating it.”

The restaurant’s name comes from its featured dish, the Golden Burrito, a deep-fried flour tortilla filled with rice, beans, cheese, and a choice of meat, and garnished with lettuce, pico de gallo, and spicy chipotle mayo, at $9.25. The meat choices for all of the burrito dishes include chicken; carnitas, which is slowcooked pork; al pastor, or marinated pork; steak; pork chops; and chorizo beef.

Golden Burrito also offers combo plates, such as the Tamales Platter, with two tamales, rice, beans and salad, at $9.50; the Sample, with quesadilla, fried taquito, two tacos, rice and beans, at $9.50; the Mexican Favorite, featuring one enchilada, two fried taquitos, rice and beans, and sweet yellow plantain, also at $9.50; and, Salad and Soup, tostada salad with soup, at $7.25.

“We are very proud of what we do in the kitchen,” Polanco says, adding that he is a stickler for following the book: the recipe book, that is. Every item is prepared by the recipe so that each dish tastes exactly the same every time it’s served.

“I don’t want to see anyone not using the recipes,” he adds, “Even the lime juice and garlic mix; there’s a recipe for that.”

Not that he won’t tweak a recipe now and then at a customer’s request. There are three varieties of Mexican Bowls on the menu, and Polanco has been known to add ingredients like nacho cheese or jalapenos if the customer prefers it that way. He’ll also honor any request a customer

has for a special dish that’s not on the menu, as long as he has the ingredients in stock.

“If I have it in the kitchen, why not make it?” he says.

Many of the menu’s dishes can be served gluten-free simply by substituting a corn tortilla for a flour tortilla, Polanco notes.

Golden Burrito also has several vegetarian options for meat-free dining. The Veggie Burrito features beans, grilled onions and peppers, lettuce and avocado, at $8.75. There’s also a Bean and Cheese Burrito at $5.50. The Veggie Tacos are made with refried beans, grilled onions and peppers, pico de gallo and avocado, at $8.50. The Veggie Quesadilla includes grilled onions and peppers with beans, at $9.25; there’s also a Cheese Quesadilla at $6.70.

The Veggie Bowl features lettuce, beans, green and red peppers, onions, avocado and salsa, at $9.25.

The restaurant is also open for breakfast, and features the Golden Breakfast Burrito, a deep-fried burrito with cheese, scrambled eggs, chorizo, ham or bacon, with a side of home fries and spicy chipotle mayo, at $7.50. By Cheryl Conway Tucked away on the back streets between Budd Lake and Hackettstown exists the freshest, coldest, pallet-watering, tastiest craft beer around.

Noted as the fifth largest craft brewery in the state, Jersey Girl Brewing Co. is located at 426 Sand Shore Rd, in the Hackettstown section of Mt. Olive. It is easy for some to just pass by and not realize that they can stop in during business hours to sample from the freshest barrels.

For those who enjoy drinking beer, this is not a bar, but a manufacturing brewing company open to the public to try a variety of styles of beer created from original recipes and poured straight from the tap. Guests are also invited inside to tour its facility to learn about the brewing process with its vessels, fermentation tanks and barrels creating lagers and ales.

Since opening their doors two and half years ago, in April 2016, Jersey Girl Brewing Co. has grown and can now be found in every county in the state.

“We’ve expanded a lot,” says Aaron, adding that their craft beer is now distributed in all 21 counties, from Sussex County “all the way down to Cape May

County,” wherever beer is sold so that includes restaurants, bars with beer on tap and even at retailers on a shelf or in a can.

Aaron says “Our goal is to be a Jersey brand- a craft brand when they’re out drinking. Jersey Girl, we are connected to our state.” Just like “no two Jersey girls are alike, no two craft beers are alike,” hence where they came up with the name for their brewing company.

“All of our beers are different,” says Aaron. “We like it that way.”

With 10,000 sq. ft. of space in a 30,000 sq. ft. facility, Jersey Girl Brewing has plenty of space for its craft brewing, 30 barrel, four vessel system, on its premises.

added two big tanks to craft even that much more beer.

So now having 10 fermentation tanks, six can hold 15,000 pints of beer while the other four can hold 7,500 pints, he says.

According to Aaron, Jersey Girl beer is the “no. one selling beer at the Prudential Stadium,” and “We are at Yogi Bear Stadium.”

Working with distributors has helped grow the business.

“If we were self-distributing, we wouldn’t have grown as much,” says Aaron.

“We are renting a canning company,” says Aaron. It connects its machine to the large fermentation tank so the craft beer can be canned, labeled and capped.

Some volunteers, friends of the brewery, even come down “every time we can twice a month” for a canning run, Aaron calls it. This one retired woman, Margaret, “she flips

cans, stands on the line and flips cans.”

Harry Browne, president of the Mt. Olive Area Chamber of Commerce, “came down last time,” says Aaron, who is a member of the chamber. “Beer is always connected to friendships. We bring friends; it’s a friendly environment.

Many people come out and help can. It’s a fun day, it’s a long day.”

Aaron says in one month, 20,000 cans can be filled for distribution at Jersey Girl Brewing.

Currently, five different craft beers are available in cans, says Aaron, “which is a big leap from when we started.”

So now Jersey Girl brews are available in keg and can, in both ales and lagers.

Available in can are four flagship beers and one seasonal.

These include: Rake Breaker which is a hazy New England style IPA with a tropical hops and grapefruit flavor.

Sun-Kissed Citra, also a New England style IPA, orange nosed with citra and tropical fruit flavor.

MO Pils- or Mt. Olive Pilsner is a traditional, German light lager, golden light body with little sweeteners, also known as the lawn-mower beer. “Perfect beer to drink while you are working hard,” describes Aaron.

Always on tap at its bar is 14 different varieties, says Aaron.

During the span of a year, though, Aaron says he and his staff

create 50 to 60 different styles on average.

“We kind of get creative,” he says. “We think about the beers we like to drink. If I went out to drink, what would I like to have?”

The intention is to “create recipes from that and hope everyone enjoys them as much as I do.”

“Taste what we have to offer and have fun with us,” says Aaron. “I’m trying to build a brand, have a good time, taste our beer.

The brewery is open to the public Thursday and Friday, 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.; Saturday, 1 p.m. to 9 p.m.; and Sunday, 1 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Anyone over the age of 21 is invited to taste the beer on tap in its Sampling Room, with a sampling menu of ten different brews at one time. Try a sample paddle with four small glasses; order a pint; packages to go; refill bottles of beer; or purchase cans and bottles on the premises.

Free Tours Every hour while the brewery is open tours are given to those interested in learning how the craft beer is brewed. Families are even invited to join in the fun. Tours can last anywhere between 10 to 30 minutes depending on the crowd and questions that come up.

“We like people to come out to get to know how we make the beer,” he says.

Brendan Flanagan of Mt. Arlington, who has worked in the Jersey Girl Brewing Co. Tasting Room and as staff tour guide of the brewery for the past two years, has become quite an expert in the brewing process.

He starts off providing some history on the origin of the brewery.

“Not founded by a Jersey girl,” the owners, Aaron and Bigger are not even natives with one from Georgia and the other from Louisiana, but they both married Jersey girls, shares Flanagan, and have lived in Mt. Olive raising their families here.

“Chuck called Mike 11 o’clock at night and said I have a name,”

says Flanagan. Jersey girls, they are all different. “Some say they are sweet, some say they are strong, some say they are bitter,” explains Flanagan about the meaning behind the brewing company’s name.

The brewery was founded in the fall of 2014 but didn’t open until 18 months later, April 15, 2016, in order to prepare the facility, come up recipes and develop its team, he says.

“Chuck built the bar himself,” he says.

Flanagan then walks the tourists through the beer making process explaining how all beer uses four main ingredients: Water, barley, hops and yeast.

“Beer is 90 percent water,” says Flanagan. “This does count as hydration,” he laughs. “Water is the main reason why we opened in Mt. Olive,” he says, as it “sits on one of the biggest aquifers in the state of N.J.” Flanagan talked about the four vessel system, process of fermentation and the six different stages involved in creating the craft beer. Part of the process involves milling their own grains in the gristmill and harvesting the sugars. Other steps include the mash tunnel which creates a secret liquid called the Wort; the lauder which separates the mash; the brew kettle which involves the hops; and the last element which involves yeast and fermentation tanks to create stout ales and lagers.

The creators need to decide what kind of beer they are making before putting the type of grain in, he says, as one may use oats, another may use wheat or more water.

The fermentation system involves 30 barrels, with one barrel equaling 31 gallons.

The cool hoppy wort goes to fermentation tanks that make the carbohydrate drinks called beer, he explains. These air-tight tanks, called Brite tanks, release the Co2, that involved bubbling away “like blowing bubbles in milk,” he says.

The process in making ale can take three to four weeks, and a minimum of six weeks to make a lager. Brewing continues Monday through Friday.

“We tend to see more ales than lagers,” he says, since they require less time to make.

Distributors then come in to deliver the Jersey Girl beer to 700 accounts in every county in N.J, says Flanagan’ and a contracted mobile canning unit comes in to hook up to the Brite tank to get beer in cans.

During the tour, eight different beers were brewing at one time, he says, with the new Schwarz Bier just being created that night for the fall and winter season.

Flanagan, who works full time as an English teacher at a private school in Northern N.J., even gets to help create some of the beer, such as the St. Patrick’s Day beer called Everybody’s Irish, “an Irish ale which was delicious,” he says. “It was a very big hit.”

Other teachers work at the brewery as well, and with that, they came up with their own beer called Ultimate Side Gig. Also on the tour he pointed out the barrel age beer and explains how the wood picks up liquor as its porous and absorbs.

Beer in those barrels sit inside for seven to 10 months, he says.

Cleaning the tanks after each new beer is made is also an important part of the process, he explains.

“Brewing is 80 percent cleaning or you will really throw off brewing,” he says. The tanks are cleaned “with water and scrubbing.”

Kevin and Melony Bishop of Long Valley have been regulars for the past three weeks. While on a pub crawl charity event to support the Highlands earlier this year, at another nearby brewery, they learned about Jersey Girl Brewing Co. They usually order in some food and relax while sampling the beer.

“It’s so clean and fresh,” says Melony Bishop. “Their décor is clean and well done.”

Living in the next town over, Kevin Bishop says “it’s very close for us. We bring take out here, pick it up, bring it here.” That night they had their son drop them off and then return to bring them home so they could linger a bit longer and enjoy the beer.

The new Schwartz beer and Wake Up And Smell The Coffee were their favorites that night.

“They have good beer,” says Melony Bishop.

“The beer is better here,” says Kevin Bishop. “Sometimes I

don’t want to be served; it’s not about the food,” he says, but more about “just to get out. Can bring my own stuff in” for an “hour or two get-aways.”

Harry Browne, another regular, stopped in as he often visits the other area breweries. As the chamber of commerce president he likes to make his rounds at Man Skirt Brewing and Czig Meister Brewing, both in Hackettstown, and Jersey Girl.

“I help them out,” says Browne, especially when they have the canning events, with 20,000 coming off the line and placed in cases, as well as with trade shows and pouring beer.

Besides being a friend and a consultant to the brewery, Browne says he likes Jersey Girl Brewing.

“I like the tasting room,” says Browne. It “has a traditional bar,” and is part of the neighborhood. “It’s a production brewery, they make more beer than the other two combined. They went the distributor route,” he says, while the other two area breweries “are more direct sales.”

As far as a favorite, Browne says “They’re all very good.” His top picks are the MO Pils and the Schwartz beer.

“For people who enjoy well-made craft beer, with three breweries, you can make a beautiful afternoon out of it,” says Browne.

“You can go anywhere for a Miller Lite, here you can try craft beer, see where it’s made, meet the brew master. This is Mt. Olive’s brewery, no one else in town quite like it.”

In their first visit to the brewery, two sisters who are alumni of Mt. Olive High School sat around one of the pub tables talking and trying the beer with one of their friends.

“We just wanted a low key night, local place to hang out,” explains Maria Schreiber, while enjoying the Oktoberfest sample.

Her sister, Aliza Schreiber, was enjoying the Gold Rush. “It’s a great transition to summer to fall,” she says.

Their friend, Maread Schneider of Budd Lake, visited one time before and says she wanted to come “to socialize with the locals.

This has character” and it’s a good place for “fun and to have good conversation.”

There’s “so much in craft beer to offer in flavor and style,” concludes Aaron. More need to know “how much fun craft beer can be.”

by Steve Sears eith McCarthy, president and CEO of Picatinny Federal Credit Union, is a busy man who is about to increase his workload. With branches in Denville, Mt. Olive, Rockaway, and at Picatinny Arsenal, McCarthy and team are soon to unveil brand new Parsippany location at Baldwin Plaza. The hope for a soft opening is set for Mon., Oct. 22, with the Grand Opening planned for Sat., Nov. 17.

Picatinny Federal Credit Union, which provides a great variety of financial services, currently employs approximately 60 employees.

Of the tight knit group, McCarthy states, “I would have to tell you that, in our culture here, everybody is a key player.

If somebody doesn’t do the job, then the whole member experience suffers.”

McCarthy explains for the uninformed what a credit union is, and how dealing with one is advantageous.

“A credit union is really a true financial co-op, it’s owned by the members,” he says. “The idea here is that our profits get returned to the members. It gets returned to them in the form of lower fees, better rates on both deposits and

loans, and we also invest in technology and now, obviously, branches. Years ago, you didn’t see a lot of credit union branches anywhere. Also, a credit union doesn’t have to answer to Wall Street; we’re not worried about what next quarter’s profit is going to be. And unlike a bank, our Board of Directors is a group of unpaid volunteers. So, these are folks who come together, they are members and they have the members best interest in mind. So, the management structure is very, very different then what you would see in a bank.”

Another difference between a credit union and a bank is that any member can run for the credit union Board of Directors when elections are held.

“You can have five dollars or $5,000, you’re still qualified to run for the Board,” McCarthy adds.

Picatinny Federal Credit Union’s first location in Picatinny Arsenal opened in 1939 and was founded by the employees.

To provide members another place to go that would not be on the base the Rockaway office opened in 1989. Following reception of a community charter in 2005, locations opened their doors in Mt. Olive in 2009 and in Denville in

McCarthy explains, “We’re able to serve anyone who lives, works, worships, or goes to school in Morris County.

A member can be any one of those groups.

We’re chartered to serve people in Morris County. That’s the advantage of Picatinny Federal Credit Union; we are very focused on the people of Morris County.”

Specifically, Picatinny Federal Credit Union brings a local flavor to the way they do business, and that homey interaction is a key.

According to McCarthy the credit union has “local people making local decisions, and I know that some banks claim that also, but they also have to answer to someone who’s not part of the community. We feel a real connection to our members. We don’t see members as customers you have to make a profit from; they’re members, they own the credit union. We serve the members, it’s not the other way around. We can also save them a lot of money, while at the same time we let our members know we really do care about them and we really appreciate their business, because whatever profits were making are going back to them anyway.”

Still, there are misconceptions about credit unions that McCarthy is eager to quell.

“Our number one misconception here at Picatinny Federal Credit Union is that you have to know someone who works at Picatinny Arsenal; that’s one of our biggest barriers,” he says.

McCarthy continues stating, “people are concerned that their deposits aren’t insured, believe it or not. All deposits in credit unions are insured up to $250,000 by the NCUA [National Credit Union Association].

Another public concern that McCarthy notes is the idea that the credit union does not have the same technology that a big bank has.

McCarthy counters that concern by stating, “We can provide the technology people need, we can provide the personal service people need. Somebody used to say here years ago, ‘Were just like a bank, only better.’ I think all of our employees here believe that.”

Picatinny Federal Credit has to adhere to capital requirements as banks do.

“We have to stay safe and sound and we’re examined just like banks are,” he says. “The NCUA examines us just like the FDIC

examines banks. So, there’s no safety issue with the credit union.”

Picatinny Federal Credit Union also gives back to the community it serves regularly.

“Through the choice of the employees here, there are two major charities in Morris County that we support in a big way,” he says. “One is Eleventh Hour Rescue.

They have an event over in Horseshoe Lake called Puptoberfest. We’re a huge sponsor of that; we also help them throughout the year with raising money. One of the big things shelters have a problem with is their medical expenses. The employees got behind it here, a lot of the members got behind it here, so we’re active physically and financially with Eleventh Hour Rescue. The other one is a new one this year, and that is the Interfaith Food Pantry of Morris County. I don’t think people realize that food security is a big issue no matter how affluent the county is.”

“We’re active in the community and we’re active with our people,” he says. “Our people actually get a full paid day to serve whatever charity they’d like to, so that’s also part of our culture here. The whole culture of how we treat our members is how we treat our employees.”

In addition to the new Parsippany location, McCarthy elaborates about what is on the horizon for Picatinny Federal Credit Union, including an updated business model, “Our goal is to be the go-to financial institution in Morris County. We want people to recognize who we are and what we can do for them. We recently changed our model to the ‘Universal Member Experience Professional.’ When you walk in the door, any person in that lobby can help you with anything. You’re going to see that in Parsippany because we’ve actually constructed that branch to meet our new business model.”

In conclusion, McCarthy explains what success means to him.

“I get a lot of success stories from people who work in what we call the front office,” he says. “I have a successful day every time I hear one of those stories. I have members talk to me, I get emails from people. The other is just to walk around the building and people seem relaxed and seem to enjoy what they’re doing. That makes my day.”

“The most interesting part,” says Donaldson, “is Tanya is actually a TCF kid; her family benefitted from Tomorrow’s Children’s Fund while she was going through all this.”

The corn maze is open seven days a week.

Wightman Farms (Morristown) When most think of Morristown, they think of the busy Green area. Obviously, Wightman’s Farm is a quieter piece of the township, perhaps a trip back to simpler times.

“Yes, we are only four miles south of downtown Morristown, but it’s like driving to the country,” says Nadine McEvoy, manager of Wightman Farms.

“We sit in a valley, but our hayride road goes along a higher elevation and the views from the top are just spectacular!

“Our Farm Market is located at 1111 Mt. Kemble Ave in Morristown which is our main address and where we conduct our retail business and entertainment activities,” she says. “We are constantly evolving to broaden our event offerings so that we become a ‘go to’ place for members of our community.”

Wightman Farms offers a PYO (Pick Your Own) as a Membership Program.

“We grow some of the best and widest variety of fruit in New Jersey,” she says.

“By inviting our members back for an entire season, they are able to take advantage of that.”

Fall season important at Wightman, and why: Tradition.

“Many of the families that come here have been doing so for generations,” says McEvoy. “I have grandparents that come along with their adult children because these adult children are now bringing their own children. Generations of families have been coming to Wightman Farms as a part of their family tradition. We take that seriously as these are memories that are passed down. We are a part of these family’s lives. It’s a big responsibility and one we are proud to own.”

There are activities for kids of all ages, big kids included. Wightman gets a lot of group hayride bookings for school trips, Corporate Team Building bookings for the hayride and corn maze, a Giant Corn Maze, Mini Mazeland, and it’s very popular and addictive Pumpkin Slingshot. The winner can pick any size pumpkin they want if they hit the bell in the target field.

“We care about what we do,” she says. “We know this is a business and generating enough money to keep us sustainable throughout the year is what keeps us going. The Fall helps us do that. However, the fact that people are taking time out of their lives to come here is also hugely important. They choose to spend their time with us and it is something that we are grateful for. We appreciate our customers.”
