MOHS Women Vocalists To Be Featured In Upcoming Musical

M

By Stefanie Sears t. Olive High School has something to sing about with the exciting news about its women’s ensemble being selected to provide background soundtrack vocals for an upcoming movie.

From composer Tim Janis comes a new heartwarming family musical film called “Buttons” starring Dick Van Dyke and Angela Lansbury, along with an all-star cast.

Though Kate Winslet and Robert Redford provide the film’s narration, providing the BG soundtrack vocals in both the film

and trailer is MOHS’s very own Advanced Women’s Ensemble, an elective that the school has been offering for six years now, thanks to some very convenient connections.

Set in a New England mill town in the early 1900s, the story follows a little girl named Annabelle, played by 11-year-old newcomer Alivia Clark, whose mother instilled in her the belief of angels and miracles. When tragedy strikes, a mysterious stranger (played by Dyke) then enters young Annabelle’s life and influences it for the better.

Mt. Olive Senior Wins First Place In Flash Fiction Contest

By Dawn M. Chiossi t. Olive High School Senior Sarah Mattalian recently won first place in the 2018 Flash Fiction Contest hosted by the Morristown Festival of Books.

The Flash Fiction Contest, held Oct. 12, was just introduced this year to mark the Morristown Festival of Book’s 5th anniversary, serving as a vehicle for New Jersey High School student aspiring writers.

Out of the approximately 60 entries, Mattalian’s original fiction story “Brother” won the first place award of a $300 gift certificate.

Along with the names of the other winners, Mattalian’s name was announced at the Morristown Festival of Books Keynote Presentation held at The Mayo Performing Arts Center to a sold-out crowd due to Keynote Speaker John Kerry.

Rewarding creativity, talent, and originality, the Flash Fiction contest was an ideal opportunity for high schoolers to show off their writing prowess.

With a word limit of 1,000 words “Brother,” is a powerful depiction of a death in the family, and the authentic sliceof life affect that it causes on its characters. Although short, “Brother’s” characters are well-rounded, and multi-layered. There’s a protagonist that the readers will root for, and a story that makes them want more.

“I was ecstatic to win as I put a huge amount of time and effort into my story,” Mattalian says. “My initial goal was to finalize; I didn’t really expect to win first place. I was honored to be able to attend and accept the award at the ceremony.”

ever since grade school. Mattalian shares that she even started making up and writing stories in the second grade, “Even though they probably weren’t very good,“ she dryly quips.

In a way, Mattalian has her family to thank for her win. Entering the Flash Fiction Competition after her dad texted her a flyer regarding it suggesting she do so. In fact, family is a huge inspiration to her.

“I became interested in writing primarily because my mom used to read to me a lot when I was little,” says Mattalian. “She was the person who instilled a love of reading in me, and school kind of fostered my desire to write.”

Exploring Another Treatment Option For Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

C

hronic fatigue immunodeficiency syndrome (CFIS) also known as myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME) is a disabling and poorly understood illness that is becoming more widespread in Western countries. CFIS is a term used to describe a myriad of neurological, neuromuscular, and immunological abnormalities. The initial onset of CFIS consists of flu-like symptoms including fever, sore throat, tender lymph nodes, chills and extreme fatigue. The chronic manifestations of CFIS always include disabling fatigue but can also include muscle and joint pain, sleep disorders, headaches, hypo- or hypersensitivities, cognitive disorders, depression, malaise, anxiety, irritability, confusion, weight fluctuations, abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting, muscle fatigue, worsening PMS, visual disturbances, tachycardia, paresthesias, dry eyes, dry mouth, night sweats, skin rashes and decreased sexual desire.

The etiology of CFIS is still un-

known, but the suspected cause is a viral infection. Some researchers believe that CFIS is actually a neurological response to a viral infection. Since there are no absolute markers or lab tests to confirm the illness, chronic fatigue immunodeficiency syndrome is often diagnosed by symptoms alone and by process of elimination. For the same reasons, western medicine has no treatment for chronic fatigue.

Instead, doctors prescribe individual medications to deal with each of the associated symptoms.

As with any illness, traditional Chinese medicine treats the individual on a case- by- case basis.

A diagnosis is made based on the individual’s symptoms as well as their tongue and pulse presentations. The patient’s tongue is inspected and 6 pulses are felt on each wrist in order for the Acupuncturist/ Chinese Medical Practitioner to determine the diagnosis. Since chronic fatigue manifests differently in each person, this method of diagnosing

is superior. The treatment plan is then formulated based on the individual’s diagnosis. As you can see in the chart- one Acupuncture treatment plan will address all of the individual’s symptoms as well as the illness as a whole. This is known as a root and branch treatment. Addressing the root cause of the chronic fatigue is addressing the illness as a whole while treating the

branch aims to relieve all of the symptoms associated with the illness. A single Chinese herbal formula can also be prescribed to treat both the root and branch of the chronic fatigue syndrome.

continued from front page The Advanced Women’s Ensemble was chosen in Spring 2017, and after Vanzini taught the girls the notes and rhythms, they sang along to the film’s orchestra music files that were given to them.

Interestingly, the recording, which took about two and a half years as they received more and music, took place on the ensemble’s own turf.

Vanzini approached Mt. Olive Studios Head Engineer and Audio Engineering teacher Trevor Campbell about using the MOHS Studios, which was built in 2016 intended to replicate Power Station Studios in Manhattan with help from Ron Saint-Germain and Tony Bon Jovi, for recording sessions for the project. Campbell was happy to oblige.

“A few of the challenges we

faced were scheduling and ambient noise,” said Campbell in an email. “Scheduling is always difficult because students have such hectic schedules. The ambient noise is a problem because some of the parts were very soft and even the slightest sound from a hallway or the work space above us could ruin a take. Other than that, the sessions went relatively well and the producers seem very happy with what we gave them.”

“Buttons” will play in about 100 to 200 select theatres on December 8, but it is also aiming for a nationwide release in 2019 if gained enough interest.

“The kids are pretty excited,” Vanzini says. “We’re all going to see the movie together that Sunday when it comes out.”

Mattalian gravitates toward fiction, but enjoys writing in all forms: Including journaling and writing poetry. She even writes for MOHS’s on-line school newspaper “Marauder Monthly.”

According to Mt Olive High School English Teacher Erin Riley Lepo, who attended the ceremony along with Mattalian, “Sarah’s writing can translate to any genre or style, adapting as she goes along. I think it speaks to her confidence as a writer,” Riley-Lepo enthuses. “She can do it all.”

Impressed by her seriousness and curiosity, Riley-Lepo shares that she recognized Mattalian early on as a writer. She observed that she carried a notebook, journaling in it. “Sarah wrote everything down. It was charming, the fact that she

followed up everything in it was impressive.”

Mattalian had even asked Riley-Lepo to read a rough draft of “Brother.” Even at that early stage, Riley-Lepo was impressed by the world she had created. “The characters just popped,” she says.

The Keynote Ceremony was exciting for all, and Mattalian asserts that her favorite part was meeting both John and Ann Kerry, people she greatly admires. “Watching their discussion about our nation’s current politics was fascinating.”

Looking to the future, Mattalian says she hopes to go into journalism as a career while still writing fiction.

“My favorite kind of writing is realistic fiction, because it allows me to create something new, yet I still know what I write about is possible,” she discloses. “I hope that my writing can grow more powerful; I want to write a book eventually and hope to influence as large of an audience as pos-

sible.”

Attending the Keynote Ceremony was exciting and surreal for both teacher and student: Riley-Lepo describes how she was touched by Mattalian’s generosity on the day of the festival, by a simple heartfelt gesture: “When she showed me the program, my name was under her name. I was so honored. It was such an honor to be considered and recognized as an influence to her.”

Mattalian was just as overwhelmed.

“The moment that stands out to me the most was when I was backstage waiting to be announced,” she says. “When I wasn’t called for 2nd or 3rd place, in that moment I realized I won.” Taking it all in, she asserts, “I truly could not have done this without my family.”

community-wide Hanukka celebration is set to be held on Monday, Dec. 3, at the Mt. Olive Municipal Building. Mayor Rob Greenbaum will kindle the menora, accompanied by the town council. Following the menora lighting ceremony, there will be a Gelt Drop, Jewish music, latkas and doughnuts.

“The message of Hanukka is the message of light,” says Rabbi Yaacov Shusterman of the Chabad Jewish Center in Flanders. “The nature of light is that it is always victorious over darkness. A small amount of light dispels a lot of darkness. Another act of goodness and kindness, another act of light, can make all the difference. Always keeping a close eye on the trends within the fitness industry, Tylee noticed the emergence of this phenomenon in New York City and Los Angeles, Calif.

“These trendy city studios were using Concept 2 rowers or Water rowers, equipment that’s been around for a number of years now,” says Tylee.

During a meeting with a sales rep from Technogym, Tylee learned of a brand-new product it was launching- a WiFi connected rowing machine called the SkillRow. Technogym had teamed up with Olympic athletes to create a product for dry land training that has all the benefits of authentic rowing, he explains.

“It’s the closest thing to actually rowing on the water and the first indoor rowing machine capable of improving anaerobic power, aerobic capacity and neuromuscular abilities in a single solution,” says Tylee. “If the Concept 2 rowers were like the flip phone of rowers…. the Skillmill was the IPhone 10.”

Deciding to be proactive, Tylee visited Technogym’s corporate offices in Fairfield to try out this new rowing machine and “he knew the moment he sat on it and started rowing, this was going to be a game changer,” according to a press release from NitroFlex.

Flanders Butcher Shop Offers Quality, Organic Meats

hile words like “natural,” “farm fresh” and “local” seem to be everywhere, there is a small butcher shop tucked away in Flanders that is actually trying to make these words mean something, as well as chaange how people think about the meat they eat.

The Pastoral Pig is a whole-animal butcher shop which exclusively carries grassfed, organic and pasture raised meats. Founder Sebastien Destree is from Lyon, France, and spent most of his life working in the restaurant business. His travel and studies took him throughout Europe and eventually to the United States, where he attended culinary school at The Cordon Bleu in Chicago.

He worked for various restaurants in New York City, but by the time his daughter was born, he had become more and more interested in learning about the sources of the ingredients they were using in the kitchen, especially when it came to animals.

While high-end restaurants had access to the highest quality products and an ability to cultivate relationships directly with farmers, access to meat that was both delicious and ethically and sus-tainably raised was limited for the everyday consumer.

While doing research to try and shop for his own family, Destree stumbled upon a whole

animal butcher (and training program) at Fleischer’s in Kingston, N.Y. “From that point forward, it all came together for me,” he said, “I realized what I could do that combined my love of craftsmanship and healthy food, and at the same time hopefully make a positive impact for our family, and in our community.”

The benefits of grass-fed and pasture raised animals are vast, including better flavor, a multitude of health benefits, benefits for the environment, and a higher standard of animal welfare. Sebastien opened The Pastoral Pig in the Fall of 2015.

It is located in the mall at 206, across from The Golf Zone. The store offers a selection of beef, lamb, pork and chicken, as well as specialty meats available upon request.

“Because we are a whole-animal butcher, we are able to offer products other meat markets cannot, and with a quality that is, frankly, not available, unless you go to extremely high-end restaurants, and even then, it’s no guarantee.”

The store offers a range of bone broths, fresh and frozen prepared foods, charcuterie, organic vegetables and bread brought in from Sullivan Street Bakery in New York City.

As Temperatures Cool, NJ Cares Organizes Annual Coat Drive

By Dawn M. Chiossi here is nothing so comforting as bundling up in a warm coat. As temperatures drop and cool, Jersey Cares, a Livingston Organization is urging everyone out there to donate warm coats to warm others with their 23rd Annual Coat Drive, held from Nov. 1 to Dec. 12.

Then on Dec. 17, coats will be distributed. The event will be sponsored by PSE&G and Interport.

Founded in 1993, Jersey Cares envisions a New Jersey in which everyone is motivated and empowered to make a positive difference. This nonprofit organization strives to increase the level of meaningful engagement by creating meaningful projects based on critical community needs.

Donating coats is a wonderful way to pay it forward and give back.

Individuals can donate now or register to become a collection site. According to Jersey Cares, there are 13 large collection sites and hundreds of smaller, or private, collection sites statewide.

Even though the coat drive has barely begun, larger, or public collection sites include locations all over in N.J. In addition,

How it works it that various organizations including companies, churches, scouts, police stations and schools, collect coats throughout the drive and deliver them to a select location, where then volunteers will organize the coats and package them for pickup. It is then that Jersey Cares approved, non-profit partners pick them up and distribute the coats to people who need them.

So keep an eye out for centers as they pop up.

According to Vice President of External Affairs from New Jersey Cares, Michelle Dee, “These small organizations are the root of the drive, everyone all coming together to support the need in communities.

Stewart Shines As Volunteer, Entrepreneur Council Member, Humanitarian

When peering at the 30-year Flanders resident’s biography, digesting the events and organizations he has chaired, reading about panels he has sat on and recognizing his business accomplishments, one can admire his involvement and resiliency.

Stewart, a 1971 graduate of the former Essex Catholic High School in Newark, has been married 33 years to his wife Sheila, and they are parents to an adopted daughter from China, Rachel Lixia, a Mt. Olive High School graduate, who now lives and works in New York City.

His bio is loaded on both the business and humanitarian side.

“I’ve been lucky,” confirms Stewart, whose efforts were rewarded in May 2018 with a Hackettstown Senior Hall of Fame award for community service in the greater Hackettstown area.

“I spent a corporate career with AT&T and after I left there I had some opportunities to give back, and I’ve taken advantage of that,” states Stewart.

As a Montclair State University graduate, Stewart holds a bachelor’s in business manage-

ment and a master’s in business administration.

He is also a certified senior business advisor with both the Independent Business Alliance and the Institute for Business and is the founder of NexGen Management, who, from Stewart’s bio, “specializes in providing leadership and guidance to Business Owners and Managers in improving the professional management, business operations, and financial performance of their business.”

“Fifteen years now,” he says of NexGen. “I can’t believe it. It doesn’t seem 15, because it’s still new; there’s a different variety of customers I work with plus the diversity of things I do at the same time.”

Stewart identifies the right areas that are lacking in a business and gives that owner the right recommendation. He identifies the right gaps and gets the right sources to fix those gaps. He also states that because business owners are so close to their businesses they aren’t able to recognize what needs to change.

Why is it not working now?’” he says. “They’re so close to it they don’t recognize it, so that’s why the outside set of eyes is helpful, and that’s the biggest challenge that any advisor or coach has, me included, making sure that you prioritize the right areas.”

His wisdom met print when he contributed to a 2017 best-selling book called “Breakthrough RESULTS!” Stewart states, “I had a terrific corporate career. I did everything from a field technician to coming inside and becoming sales support, up to sales person to sales manager, to global product manager to general manager, so I’ve had the opportunity to do a lot of things, had my hands in a lot of pieces.

“This is where my outside activities are critical to my success because I identify the right external source that understands the scope and budget and can deliver those results as an expert to the client,” says Stewart.

“That’s the brand I’ve built over 15 years.

“For a more established business, it becomes fun again instead of a job,” he reflects, then adds, “I’ve made plenty of mistakes in my career, and my goal is not to have a business owner replicate the ones I’ve already made. That’s part of the value of having a long career.”

Stewart is chairing the Second Annual Hackettstown Holiday of Lights Festival for the Foundation for Hackettstown Medical Center, of which he is a Board of Directors member.

The event is set for Nov. 17 and

Stewart notes that it is an event which is “complimentary to the community. We did it last year and it was a huge success, and we’re doing it again this year.”

He is also the past four-year chair of the Leadership Morris Alumni Council which is “a huge program based on community service with the Morris County Chamber [of Commerce],” Stewart says in describing it.

“That one gives a lot of insight to different foundations and activities going on in the county of Morris and I was chamber president of the Mount Olive Chamber at the time and I was recruited by them to say, ‘Hey, would you consider this?’ The timing was just perfect,” he explains.

continued from page 22 Catholic High School (ECHS) Alumni Foundation, Stewart is proud of that group’s adoption and support of Newark’s Cristo Rey High School. “We give multiple scholarships; actually help build up their sports teams,” he say. “We have a very active alumni foundation which I’m very proud of.”

Praises flow from his lips regarding his resident township.

“The people are great,” he says. “The cul-de-sac street that we live on, everybody knows each other, everybody helps each other, and that’s how I wound up getting involved with the township council. It’s all about community and I’m very proud of that fact.”

He continues, “It’s not politics; it’s all about with everybody what’s best for the town. We all have different backgrounds, we all voice our opinions, but everybody’s motive is the exact same thing: what’s best for the town. I’m very proud of the work that I’ve been able to sup-

port for the township council.

It’s a great group to work with, all the township people.”

Stewart also notes that he loves the aesthetics of the area.

“Mt. Olive includes both Budd Lake and Flanders,” he says. “We’re rural, yet not. I think one of the best things we ever did from a township perspective is we developed the park [Turkey Brook]. It’s like the center of Mt.Olive.”

Stewart, who is currently working on a book of his own, ponders when asked what he wants to do next, and the conversation returns to pride in his family. “Wow, that’s a tough question,” he says. “We’re [he and his wife] are very proud of our daughter who graduated from her master’s program in the UK and is now living independently in New York City, my wife has gotten involved in the food pantry and she does a lot of stuff, too. To be honest with I’m not unfulfilled; I’ve done so many things that I’m so proud and happy to do, and I’m not

bored.”

He hesitates, continuing to ponder the question, then excitedly states, “Oh, I know what it could be: to shoot par in golf.”

How about the elusive hole-inone? “Never had one,” he says with a laugh. “I’ve come close but never had one. That’s definitely on the bucket list, I’ll tell you that.” With a laugh, he adds another hope, that “the Jets to win a Super Bowl.”

For a guy who has accomplished much, Stewart’s definition of success at day’s end is simple but perhaps the most important.

“Coming home and seeing my wife, and that she’s healthy and the family’s healthy.”

Organization Offers Hope And Help To Veterans Navigating After War

Community Hope in Parsippany is a safe haven for veterans and their loved ones to overcome mental illness, addiction, homeless-ness and poverty.

It’s the largest nonprofit serving homeless veterans and families in and around New Jersey.

“We’ve been providing housing and support services for as many as 1,500 to 1,600 veterans and their family members annually,” says Julia Bey Ahmet, chief development officer.

Community Hope shares on its website some of the stories of veterans they have connected with and helped in various ways. To protect the privacy of its clients, only first names have been used in this article.

One veteran, Ruben went into the service right out of high school and after four years, received an honorable medical discharge, walking with the aid of a cane and struggling with depression and PTSD after seeing combat in Afghanistan.

“The military breaks you down to build you up and works for what you are doing in wartime but once you are back in the real world, it’s confusing,” the 25-yearold shares on the website. “The infantry doesn’t train you well for the job market.”

He is focusing on his college art school classes, his medical treatment and gaining his independence.

“I understand that I have to take my time here so I don’t return, so I make it on my own,” he states.

Ahmet says their commitment to carry out the mission in which Community Hope was founded in 1985 remains — and their resi-dential “Hope for Veterans” programs provide a refuge for more than 160 a day in their recovery.

The programs are open to non-veterans as well. Four New Jersey counties have housing and support ser-

vices for people with se-rious mental illness — and 15 New Jersey counties (Bergen, Burlington, Essex, Hudson, Hunterdon, Mercer, Middlesex, Monmouth, Morris, Ocean, Passaic, Somerset, Sussex, Union and Warren) for homeless veterans and their families.

“This is really, really close to my heart, in the work and in the organization, as well I have family members with serious mental ill-ness so that’s sort of the third piece,” says Carmine Deo, chief operating officer. “Being here and being connected to Community Hope is really a lifelong thing for me and being named CEO is even better.”

Ahmet says creating and building their fundraising program has been tremendously rewarding, and it has enabled them to devel-op new pro-

H grams and extend their reach to more individuals.

One of those individuals is Arthur, an Afghanistan War Veteran — infantryman, veterinary tech and dental assistant. His plans changed once he got out of the Army and he found himself homeless, with

military skills that didn’t transfer to viable civilian em-ployment.

He often slept in his car and looked for work.

“You get to the point of thinking about suicide,” Arthur states on the website. continued on page 35

Next stop — county college to become a certified dental hygienist and a role model for his son and daughter.

“I didn’t have a home for five months,” says Arthur.

“Community Hope gave me a second chance at life.

According to Ahmet, she has many family members who served.

“So I think we all have a great opportunity to give back to those who are presently in need,” she says.

And the veterans they treat really span the generations, and many conflicts.

“Last year our youngest veteran was 24 year old that

we rescued from homelessness and the oldest was a 95 year old World War II veteran,” Ahmet says.

This time of year can be especially tough - family challenges and other pressures are intensified.

“We are always looking at the people we serve, whether with mental illness or homeless veterans and make sure that we ramp up the services and provide the support that all families need around the holidays,” Deo says.

That includes emergency Housing, Transitional Housing, Permanent Supportive Housing and Rapid Re-Housing. The Hope for Vet-erans Programs are 90 days, nine months and others are indefinite for people with serious mental illness who need long-term care.

home for veterans who were formerly homeless and may also be disabled so they have an affordable place to live with onsite support services.

It’s just what Second Class Petty Officer Steven needed.

He proudly served our country for more than nine years and completed four tours of duty.

The Iraq and Afghanistan War Veteran managed 30 cooks and was responsible for feeding 3,000 servicemen and women four times a day. He also saw conflict while transporting Marines and Special Forces into war zones.

But upon returning home, he began experiencing anxiety and paranoia.

“I didn’t know what was wrong with me,” the Navy man says, explaining that he used marijuana to self-medicate the escalating symptoms, which later turned out to be a diagnosis of paranoid schizophrenia.

Unable to work, he became homeless and destitute until entering a VA short-term residential and recovery program.

From there Steven transferred to Community Hope’s Hope for Veterans Program, where he now works at an on-campus cafe and receives wraparound services.

He is optimistic about his future and hopes to pursue a college degree.

“Whether it’s the homeless prevention program, transitional housing program or supportive housing program, the goal is always getting people to permanent housing and having a sustainable permanent housing plan,” Deo says.

The root cause of homelessness for many of these veterans often stems back to a mental health issue, including substance abuse.

“Our largest current campaign has been to bring mental health counseling services to all of the veterans that are in 95-bed transi-tional housing programs, where we’re seeing at least eight out of 10 veterans with a mental health issue,” Ahmet says.

Another client, Danny was an Army medic in Iraq and then Afghanistan, where he spent time embedded with the 101st Airborne Division in a Taliban stronghold. He witnessed war’s devastating effects ... while treating his injured fellow soldiers.

He returned home to deep emotional scars: Night terrors, sleeping with a weapon under his pillow for protection, crippling de-pression. He was continued on page 36

But Community Hope has helped Danny have better days.

He receives the support and counseling he needs through the Hope for Veterans Transitional Housing Program. And a year af-ter entering the program, he returned to college to pursue a healthcare degree that allows him to build on his experience as a medic and continue helping others.

According to Deo, many times mental health issues are either combat related, service related and may have started after they were already a veteran or no longer serving.

“Sometimes you can still see a direct line, whether it was a physical or emotional disability that occurred or at least the seeds started,” Deo says. “But for returning service men it’s really about the impact of regular civilian life when they come back here — be it economic, relationship or employment.”

Community Hope knows veterans can’t do it alone.

“Especially our SSVF Program, the focus is homeless veteran families and so we seek to engage families in the process,” Deo says. “Across all

of our services, the family and support network component are important to everyone’s recovery.”

And the organization continually feels the community’s love.

“We were fortunate to have 850 supporters who came out for our 22nd annual gala and we’re asking corporations to participate in a ‘Jeans Day’ (Nov. 11),” Ahmet says. “Typically the employee makes a $5 donation to support our veterans in exchange for wear-ing jeans to work.”

Many groups organize collection drives of gift cards for the vets so they can buy food and warm clothes. Other groups hold sock drives

and there’s a holiday drive so each veteran gets a gift, usually something essential like a sweatshirt, winter coat, hat, gloves, sleeping bag or boots.

“How much it means to our veterans to be remembered around this time of year and as Veteran’s Day approaches

that their ser-vice was truly valued,” Ahmet says. “‘And how honored and privileged we feel to be serving veterans, recognizing their service and helping them out of difficult situa-tions,” Deo adds.
