Charity Support Of Handbags For Homeless Gets Filled By Growing Collections And Volunteers

By Cheryl Conway n less than a year, a local non-profit has collected and donated 600 handbags filled with personal care items to homeless and women living in shelters.

Volunteers, residents, friends and groups in the area have been supporting Helping Hearts & Handbags, Inc. with even more collections planned.

The 501©(3) was established in March 2016 by Lisa Smith Wagner of the Hackettstown section of Mt. Olive.

Wagner’s mission is for women to help other women. Her target has been to help the women in Morris and Warren counties who are either living on the streets or in shelters.

MOHS National English Honor Society Collects Purses For Homeless As Non Profit Gains Support.

“We take so much for granted and helping another human being is one of life’s greatest blessings,” says Wagner. “We’re not just giving out purses, we’re giving out dignity with a little bit of love.”

In a recent drive, the National English Honor Society at Mt. Olive High

School collected more than 60 purses to donate to the HH&H’s Donation Station Purse/Item Drive.

Initiated by Wagner’s long-time friend, Lisa Newberg-Brown, Library assistant at MOHS, the collection drive was held Jan. 2 through Jan. 26.

“She works in

the library at the high school and we have been friends for over 15 years,” says Wagner. “She reached out to me and asked if there was anything she could do at the high school to help us.

Talented MOMS Students Win Award At Future City Competition

By Jane Primerano tudents in the Gifted and Talented Program at the Mt. Olive Middle School won the best transportation system award at the Future City Competition at Rutgers University, according to a press release from the school district.

Four teams of middle schoolers competed and two of those teams advanced to the regional round.

The teams used the Sim City program to design various aspects of their cities. They also had to write a 1,500 word essay and construct scale models of sections of the cities they designed. They were asked to use recyclable materials in the construction and had to build their models for less than $100.

The winning team from Mt. Olive was designers and builders of the City of Kaleidescopia. Those who presented their project to the judges were Oliv-

ia Lin, Victoria Tang and Adkila Venkatramen. The other members of that team were Mollie Baduini, Adriana Chaparro, Marissa Coyle, Sahil DiSouza, Kyle Mears and Jacob Sorriano.

A second team, Team Olympus, also presented to the judges: Michael Lazzarotti, Grace Lazzarotti and Christopher Walsh.

This is the first year the Mt. Olive Middle School participated in the Future City Competition. They competed against 40 schools from around the state.

Windmills and solar cells featured prominently in all of the designs.

The cities featured multiuse buildings that combined residential housing, commercial offices and shopping centers in the same structure. This type of planning redirects the load of the local transit systems and creates walkable communities.

land strategically to maximize the air quality of the entire city.

In addition to the Sim City program, Google Earth was used as a resource for the students. They used it to find suitable locations for their cities. The most favored locations were near bodies of water to facilitate shipping of goods.

In preparation for the com-

petition, the students attended several workshops. One taught them project management.

Another workshop, presented by Public Service Electric and Gas, allowed them to work hands-on with a Van de Graff generator among other learning experiences. A Van de Graff generator is the device many continued on page 4

Exploring Another Treatment Option For Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

hronic fatigue immunodeficiency syndrome (CFIS) also known as myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME) is a disabling and poorly understood illness that is becoming more widespread in Western countries. CFIS is a term used to describe a myriad of neurological, neuromuscular, and immunological abnormalities. The initial onset of CFIS consists of flu-like symptoms including fever, sore throat, tender lymph nodes, chills and extreme fatigue. The chronic manifestations of CFIS always include disabling fatigue but can also include muscle and joint pain, sleep disorders, headaches, hypo- or hypersensitivities, cognitive disorders, depression, malaise, anxiety, irritability, confusion, weight fluctuations, abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting, muscle fatigue, worsening PMS, visual disturbances, tachycardia, paresthesias, dry eyes, dry mouth, night sweats, skin rashes and decreased sexual desire.

The etiology of CFIS is still un-

known, but the suspected cause is a viral infection. Some researchers believe that CFIS is actually a neurological response to a viral infection. Since there are no absolute markers or lab tests to confirm the illness, chronic fatigue immunodeficiency syndrome is often diagnosed by symptoms alone and by process of elimination. For the same reasons, western medicine has no treatment for chronic fatigue.

Instead, doctors prescribe individual medications to deal with each of the associated symptoms.

As with any illness, traditional Chinese medicine treats the individual on a case- by- case basis.

A diagnosis is made based on the individual’s symptoms as well as their tongue and pulse presentations. The patient’s tongue is inspected and 6 pulses are felt on each wrist in order for the Acupuncturist/ Chinese Medical Practitioner to determine the diagnosis. Brown says she learned of Wagner’s non-profit on social media so decided she would pitch the idea to MOHS’s clubs for a collection drive as they are required to participate in a community service project.

In December 2017, the National English Honor Society came forth to lead the collection.

Made up of 60 juniors and seniors, the group set a box outside the MOHS principal’s office for donations of gently used handbags and personal care items, says Brown. Staff, board office members, teachers and students donated 12 large boxes filled with purses and 16 more boxes filled with personal care items.

On Jan. 30, members of the

National English Honor Society helped two of Wagner’s board members load their cars with the items.

“We were overwhelmed with the generosity of people,” says Brown. “I think the cause is very worthy. I love the idea of giving some dignity to the women; here’s a nice bag you can carry.”

To date, there have been 15 collections and donation stations in the area to support HH&H. Other ones held in Mt. Olive have included Mt. Olive Transportation, St. Jude’s Rosary Society, Mt. Olive Senior Center, Temple Hatikvah Sisterhood in Flanders, Mt. Olive Brownie Troop #96769, First Hope Bank all branches and Chester M Stephens Elementary School.

with a HH&H’s Flyer and Suggested Item List, and a sample display purse.

“A Donation Collection is simply someone mentioning Helping Hearts & Handbags, Inc. at her book club, office, church group, etc. and collecting purses and items. We work with each coordinator and are happy to drop off Donation Station/Collection Kits and pick up purses/items.”

While the request is for larger purses, Wagner has found use for the smaller bags.

“Some of the purses we’ve collected have been too small for all of the items, so we started making “little girl” purses for the young girls at the shelters,” she says. “They are a big hit!”

“Another volunteer who, along with her daughter, sorts the hundreds of travel-size toiletries we receive, and puts a shampoo, conditioner, lotion, and soap into a plastic baggie

for each purse. Different Girl Scout/Brownie Troops have helped fill purses. And one of my Board of Director’s members has literally written hundreds of notes because each purse contains a handwritten note that says “With love from the women at Helping Hearts & Handbags.”

Wagner is ecstatic with all of the support she has received.

“Honestly, I am overwhelmed, amazed, and humbled at how generous and receptive people are to the idea of HH&H’s,” says Wagner who has lived in the area for 25 years. “We began the charity less than a year ago and look how far we’ve come… and we’re just getting started! I knew I had hit upon something unique when I asked my book club if they thought it was a good idea and five Hefty bags full of purses and items arrived at the next book club! When you ask women if they have any old purses (always yes!) and if they would like to help a homeless woman by donating them (always yes!) it’s pretty obvious this is an easy way to do something good for another woman. We are all busy and many of us want to help but are not sure how. Helping Hearts & Handbags makes it so easy… and clears out some space on your closet shelf!

For those who work in the corporate world, Wagner says “we are always looking for corporate donations for items such as sanitary pads and tampons, ladies socks, hand wipes, tissue packets, Chapstick, etc.

Washington and Hackettstown townships have been invited to attend, along with Mt. Olive police officers, firefighters and emergency medical technicians.

“We want people to be able to approach an officer” and learn “how to better prepared as citizens,” says Bill Lockwood of Flanders, event organizer and president of the 200 Club of Morris County. “We want people to see what they do 24/7; to find out what an officer does on a daily basis; to find out what an EMS officer does. “Each area will have one,” says Lockwood, featuring different themes for each such as meeting those directly involved with canine units, or opioids and drug addiction.

Food will be served and discussion will commence. Attendees 21 and older are invited to pay to sample beer at the brewery.

The 200 Club of Morris County is a non-profit organization with currently 1,000 members who supports Morris County police officers, fire fighters, first aid squad members, and members of the New Jersey State Police serving Morris County who die in the line of duty.

Mt. Olive PARCC Scores Compare Favorably To Area Schools

he 2016-17 PARCC results, recently released by the New Jersey Department of Education, exhibit solid evidence that the students in Mt. Olive continue to outperform all other area students in the tested areas of English/language arts (ELA) and math. Over the past three years, combined school performances have increased by

almost 40 percent in ELA and by almost 10 percent in math.

Three years ago, around 49 percent of the district’s tested students “passed” PARCC, the state’s assessment system for learning (earning a score of 4 or 5). Last year, 81 percent of all Mt. Olive students were “passed,’’ a new record.

Mt. Olive, for instance, is rated a “GH” district factor grouping for socio-economic status (a rating of community wealth). The state compares all schools based on the DFG on a scaled of A (lowest family income status) to J (highest income status). As a GH district, Mt. Olive’s relative wealth places the schools at around the 70th percentile.

Compared to all other GH districts in the state, Mt. Olive’s students combined proficiency score of 81 was 23 percent higher.

With respect to district size, 72 districts between 3,000 and 6,000 students were compared. Mt. Olive students’ scores surpassed similarly sized districts between 300 and 600 students by 34 percent.

When compared to Morris County school systems, Mt. Olive’s average of 81 percent passing exceeded the county average of 68 percent by 16 percent. The students also outperformed the state at large by 34 percent; 81 percent to 53 percent.

In the area of math, Mt. Olive produced similar results.

Mt. Olive’s kids outscored the similarly paired socio-economic grouping (DFG) by 15 percent, the similar-sized districts by 29 percent and the Morris County schools by around 5 percent. Mt. Olive also outscored the state average by around 29 percent.

In related news, Mt. Olive’s disaggregated groups also fared well. When comparing state demographic factors such as race, free or reduced lunch, special education, or Limited English Proficient students continued on page 9

Local Church Team Members Visit Haiti, Deliver Supplies And Hope

by Elsie Walker any people have heard on the news that Haiti is a poor, third world country. However, people like West Morris Central High School students Sarah Broadhurst and Lizzy Ramsey, Moravian College student, Mollie Miller, and Allamuchy resident Tony Albanese know a little more.

In mid-January, they were part of a 14 member mission team that went from Trinity United Methodist Church in Hackettstown to Haiti, bringing with them basic rudimentary medical supplies, vitamins, school supplies and two wheelchairs. They visited orphanages, a home for disabled children and a children’s hospital and spent time with the children. In addition, to supplies, they had come to address another need: love.

“I knew Haiti was going to be overwhelming and confusing; but when we first walked outside of the airport in Port-AuPrince, I did not expect to see the level of poverty that was present,” said Broadhurst.

“I did not expect to see houses that were on the sides of the streets with a curtain as a door. The atmosphere was expected to an extent.”

For Albanese, this was his second mission trip to Haiti.

“Being there before, I wasn’t surprised by what I saw, but I was surprised that it affected me just as deeply as the first time,” said Albanese. Out of the places they visited, Mother Teresa’s orphanage stood out the most for him.

“When you walk in the room, there are 50 cribs filled with babies, and they all stand up and raise their arms, wanting to be held,” he said.

Ramsey noted the Mother Theresa orphanage stood out for her, too: “After feeding a few of the children, I was holding this one baby in my arms, just as you would hold a newborn. Her body was the length of my forearms and her legs draped over. Then, I found out this baby was actually five years old! I was taken aback by initial shock and I looked down at her as her gaze very slowly drifted to meet mine. The young girl was so malnourished that she could not even stand to support her body weight.”

It was another orphanage that stood out for Miller. She noted that once a child turns 18, he or she can no longer stay at that orphanage. They end up living on the streets or trying to live with any existing family.

A team member holds one of the Haitian orphans. One of the great needs of these orphans is love.

Miller noted how unimaginable it is to put a child, who knows little of the outside world, out on the streets.

Methibosheth House, a home for disabled children. Here Ramsey met Frankie. The leader there, Steve, explained that Frankie was born with three fingers on each hand and both of his parents died when he was a toddler. He could not live with his brother, because his brother tried to kill him, thinking the disability was a curse. Frankie found his way to Methibosheth House.

“As Steve was telling me the story, I immediately saw God in the biggest smile of Frankie, sitting across from me,” said Ramsey. “Soon thereafter, as a younger little girl came by and tripped, Frankie scooped her up, wiped her tears and tickled her until she was laughing again.”

The entire mission trip lasted about a week. However, none of those who went will forget Haiti.

“This trip changed my life,”

shared Miller. “I miss it every single day. I can’t wait to go back.”

Broadburst shared: “Despite their disabilities, the children were always smiling and loving. Visiting these places was intense and hard at times, but it was a blessing to have witnessed God’s great love through children who have almost nothing.”

Ramsey said, “The people of Haiti, do not deserve the position they are put into. The children on Haiti deserve love and care, just as our children in America do. The only thing that separates us is a very small ocean. When I try to wrap my head around why we [in the U.S.] were given so much wealth, while children in third world countries are starving, the only reason I can find is because we were meant to give back.”

Shredding, Recycling Event

he Knights of Columbus in Flanders will hold a shredding event in its hall on April 21 from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m.

Shredding is a safe and secure method of destroying confidential documents and recycling while helping a local charitable organization.

Documents should be brought in either paper bags or cardboard boxes. Shredding is limited to confidential and sensitive materials only; no binders or magazines. Electronics will be accepted loose only; no

boxes needed.

Shredding donations: $5 per brown grocery bag or $10 per copy paper box. For every five boxes, one will be free.

Electronic donations: $10 for each tower or laptop. Hard drives must be removed from tower or laptop. They will also destroy hard drives for $20 each and cell phones for $10 each. Annual Charity B-Ball Tournie Aims For Higher Contribution To Cancer Research

By Cheryl Conway ith a larger venue, a local non-profit is shooting to raise $30K this year for cancer research and clinical trials.

Former Roxbury resident and 2004 Roxbury High School graduate, Dan Exter, has been on the move to growing and expanding his non-profit organization, Layups 4 Life. Since he began his charity in 2014, Exter has raised more than $50K with contributions to leukemia, pediatric and bone marrow research departments within Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC).

His fourth annual 3 on 3 charity basketball tournament is set for Saturday, April 28, at the Parsippany PAL Youth Center in Parsippany. Doors open at 10 a.m., with opening ceremonies beginning at 10:30 a.m. and competition lasting until 6 p.m.

Sign up now through April 9 for $32 per person; registration cost will increase to $40 after April 9 through April 24, the last day to register. Each team can have up to four players, allowing for one sub. Open to males and females, players must be at least 13 years old.

Teams are guaranteed to play five games each within divisions of other teams that are of similar age and skill set. Within these divisional rounds, games will go to eight points or whoever is winning after 12 minutes of play. Teams that have the best record within their division will move on to a single elimination tournament, explains Exter, founder and CEO for Layups 4 Life.

With more gym space at the new venue this year, Exter is expecting a good turnout.

Previously held at Roxbury High School, Exter decided to move locations this year as he needed more gym space. Last

year, Layups 4 Life attracted 45 teams, “an all-time high,” says Exter, with about 180 participants.

With just one gym at RHS, five games were held at one time.

Although he says he loved playing at his former RHS gym, he says, “We came into a good problem where we outgrew it.”

The Jersey City resident played in a men’s league at the Parsippany PAL. He figured, “Wouldn’t it be nice to have my tournament here.” So “after pitching the idea to the PAL management, this year we are at a new gym,” says Exter. “They have two gyms available.”

With more teams, more money can be raised. Last year, Exter’s Layups 4 Life raised $23K in the 2017 fundraising season; his new goal is $30K. “This year we’ve been fundraising since Jan. 1, 2018,” says Exter. “We have some great donors & sponsors which consist of both local and national businesses.”

Besides raising monies from players, Exter says funds will be raised from raffles, a silent auction and vendors selling food at the event. There will also be a DJ playing music for entertainment and contests.

“It’s a family-driven event,” says Exter. “You bring your kids, you play basketball. What can be better than that? Basketball, music and food, all supporting a great cause.”

Exter also improved his website and received 501(C)(3) status for his organization in September. By having this nonprofit status, Exter is now allowed to direct his proceeds to help in other areas. Before receiving this status, Layups 4 Life was considered a third party fundraising organization through Sloan Kettering, he explains.

“Now we have that flexibility on where we can help people,”

he says. “Sloan Kettering will always be a focal point; they saved my life, but there are other areas we can help so we like to try to do so.”

As a former cancer patient, Exter was treated at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center after diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (A.L.L.) in the summer of 2013 at the age of 27. He received a treatment plan consisting of full body radiation, chemotherapy and a T-Cell depleted Stem Cell transplant, as described on the website. His younger and only brother, Jason Exter, was a perfect match and became Exter’s donor.

During his recovery, Exter made a promise to himself to be an advocate in the fight against cancer. With his love for basketball- a sport he played since he

was 10 years old and as a power-forward on RHS boys’ varsity basketball team his senior yearLayups 4 Life was created.

Layups 4 Life is founded on the principles of making a difference in the fight against cancer. Its mission to help raise vital funds for cancer research and clinical trials at MSKCC. “We are growing” says Exter, and are continuing to raise awareness. “That is the year over year goal, to raise funds to fight this disease and make a difference.”

Born To Jump, MOHS Alumnus And Olympic Star Works Hard At Onset Of Season

By Cheryl Conway he season for indoor track and field is underway and one former Olympic contestant is breaking all records.

Keturah Orji started off her last season as a student at the University Georgia on a high note when she broke the school, collegiate and American record in the triple jump. In her first attempt at her season debut held Jan. 20 at the Clemson Invitational in South Carolina, Orji jumped 47 feet and 8 inches, beating her last year’s record of 46 feet-11.75 inches.

The 2014 graduate of Mt. Olive High School continues to up her game every year. She came in fourth place in the triple jump for track and field during the finals of the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, jumping 48 feet and 3 ¼ inches, setting the female outdoor record in America.

On the collegiate level, she has competed on the University of Georgia team all four years and now broke even her own indoor record.

Orji currently holds the collegiate record and American record for all females in history for indoor and outdoor triple jump, confirms her mother Nicole Orji of Mt. Olive. The sport opened up for women in 1996, ironically the same year Orji was born.

The 21-year old, soon to turn 22 on March 5, was born to jump. She has been competing internationally since she was 17 years old, her mom adds.

“I was really surprised and excited after breaking the American record,” says Keturah Orji. “It was very early in the season and I have never opened up my season with such a big jump. I was mostly happy because my indoor personal record and outdoor personal record were so far from each other and I knew I had potential to jump further indoors but it wasn’t coming together.”

Her mom is just as pleased about her daughter’s continued success at the sport.

“I was really happy for her,” says Nicole Orji. “I know that’s a great improvement from when she opened a year ago. For her to open at 47-8, she will have a really good season. I’m really excited for her.”

Now that she set even a higher record, Orji shares her goals for the season.

“This season I hope to just build on my triple jump mark that I opened with,” says

Orji. “I want to be more consistent in my jump series and more consistent overall. I hope to go to World Indoor Championships and hopefully a medal. I also would like to jump 22 feet again in the long jump.”

With plans to graduate in May with a bachelor’s degree in financial planning, Orji plans to continue on for her master’s.

“After I graduate in May, I plan to finish out the season with the University of Georgia and hopefully sign with an agent and secure sponsorships,” she says. “I also am going to start graduate school at UGA and get a degree in sports management & policy.”

To those who share similar dreams of being the best they can be, Orji offers

“I would say the keys to success is first of all to work hard in everything you do, whether it is school, a sport or hobby,” says Orji. “Consistency and a positive mindset is also important, our mind is a lot more powerful than we think. Mt. Olive Kids Score Big In Martial Arts Championship

ikayla (Holla) VizzioMachen, a Mt. Olive Middle School eighth grader, and her brother, Michael (Romi) Vizzio-Machen, a MOMS sixth grader, won a World Cup Championship and two second place trophies in the World Cup International Invitational Martial Arts competition last month.

“These two are unstoppable,’’ said Peaches Vizzio, their instructor. “I am proud and humbled by their dedication, commitment and sportsmanship. They both competed well and showed great teamwork.”

At 13 years old, Mikayla, competing since the age of three in martial arts competitions, competed at the advanced level of 12-14-year olds. She took home second place in traditional forms and was a finalist in point sparring.

boys and girls from many different martial arts backgrounds including Korean Tae Kwon Do, Japanese Karate and Chinese Kung-Fu. Countries all over the world represented their styles in this tournament. Her brother, Michael, also competing since the age of 3, competed at the 9 to 11-year-old intermediate level. He placed second in traditional forms and finalist in point sparring.

The World Cup Championship was won by Mikayla and her teammate, Lillian Go of Mt. Tabor in the 17 & Under all rank team pairs division. This division is based on 100 percent synchronicity and style, similar to the Olympics.

Vizzio’s Institute of Martial Arts of Fairfield brought 10 competitors to compete in the World Cup. All 10 competitors took home trophies.

The Art Of Dance Is The Place To Dance

ancing makes one feel happy and the Art Of Dance located in Chester has been influential in making this “happy, magic” since 1969. Our students include children as young as 14 months (Mommy & Me) to the aspiring professional or adult dancer.

This past holiday season started 2018 with a bang for this local Dance school as they continued their 20 year tradition with the Art Of Dance, “Holiday” Travel Troupe.

Performing in several local nursing homes throughout Chester, Mendham, Long Valley and Hackettstown during the holiday season. With many local performances already on the calendar, make sure to be on the lookout for the Art of Dance, dancers throughout the community this year!

New this season is our Little Stars program for stand out dancers ages 4-6 yrs. to provide more performance opportunities and an introduction to dance competition, while they continue to develop a strong foundation of performing skills and dance technique.

Open to dancers 8 & Up, the new Performance Team, is an exciting opportunity for dancers that love to dance and

are looking for performing opportunities.

These dancers will perform at local events and holiday shows in the community and will have the opportunity to earn community service credit for school.

The Art of Dance knows dancing is about much more than just the steps. Director Valerie Harman passionately cultivates lifelong friendships through dance, inspires creativity and confidence within students with the help of her dedicated, experienced staff and faculty. Each member of the AOD faculty is trained extensively in the style of dance that they teach, from hip-hop to ballet and pointe, tap, jazz, Irish step, lyrical, gymnastics and boys only classes. It is a wonderful experience to start children in dance classes when they are young and enthusiastic.

The Art Of Dance is excited to have Tap Dancer extraordinaire, the phenomenally acclaimed Dormeshia Sumbry-Edwards onto their faculty. Making her Broadway debut at age 12 she has had a non-stop performing career on Broadway and in the tap community winning a Bessie Award along the way. Dormeshia is a fantastic teacher and is great working with aspiring

dancers of all ages. Also joining the tap faculty is the rising tap star Ali Dietz, currently with the tap company of Dorrance Dance.

Kelby Brown is currently teaching the ever-popular Boy’s class. With his training beginning at the American Ballet Theatre, and experience dancing for Madonna, Lady Gaga, Justin Timberlake, Celine Dion, Elton John, and Usher, the boys will have a great time dancing like boys. You can bet the studio is filled with students ready to learn from these pro’s so register quickly!

Chabad Hosts Purim In Italy

urim in Italy” is the Chabad Jewish Center’s creative twist this year on their traditional Purim party.

“It combines ancient Jewish traditions with a modern twist,” said Rabbi Yaacov Shusterman, director of the Chabad Jewish Center. “We focus on doing interesting and innovative holiday programs, yet still keeping with the holiday theme.”

The grand Purim Bash will be held at 13 Watson Way, in Flanders, on Thursday, March 1, at 5:15 p.m. The celebration will begin with a unique Multimedia Megillah Reading, followed by exciting entertainment, Jewish music, hamentashen, as well as an Italian buffet dinner. In the spirit of Purim, come in costume to be included in the lively competition where judges will award prizes to contestants with the most innovative or funny costumes. All are welcome to join regardless of affiliation or back-

Area Nonprofit Seeks Applications For Preschool Funding

or families that need help affording the cost of preschool, Morristown non-profit Preschool Advantage is accepting applications for tuition assistance for children to attend its partner preschools for the school year beginning in September 2018.

Families demonstrating commitment to education and financial need can apply for

funding for a half day of preschool. Children must be 3-or 4-years old by October 1, 2018 to be considered for funding for the school year beginning in September 2018. Applications received by February 28, 2018 will be given priority in funding decisions.

isitors will see Mt. Olive High School students constructing an underwater remote-controlled robot and will also have an opportunity to pilot one themselves in the club’s new 2,000 gallon test tank on Thursday, Feb. 22 at 7 p.m.

Members of the school’s Marine Advanced Technology Education club will host the event.

Just as the high school’s FIRST robotics team focuses much of its school year on building a robot for competition, so too does MATE. The annual competition sponsored by the Marine Advanced Technology Education Center in Monterey, Calif., challenges students around the world to develop a robot that can accomplish tasks that are needed in the workplace. In this year’s

contest, students must use their computer science, math, physics, and engineering skills to construct an underwater vehicle that can locate underwater plane wreckage, install or recover a seismometer, and install a tidal turbine and underwater monitoring equipment.

MATE also provides students with the opportunity to explore careers in the marine sciences and helps them understand environmental challenges that need to be solved.

In the fall, 18 Mt. Olive MATE students traveled to Florida to measure, tag, and release sharks – assisting graduate students in the University of Miami’s Shark Research and Conservation Program.

Homeless Solutions Honors Organizers Of Cycling Event

By R.E. Wagner or the past seven years, Marty Epstein and Bill Ruddick have collaborated to host a fundraising experience known as the Gran Fondo: NJ. Held in Morristown annually, Epstein describes it as an event dedicated to the ideas of sustainability, safe bicycle riding and support for local non-profit organizations through charitable donations.

“I’ve always been involved in the community,” said Epstein, owner of Marty’s Reliable Cycle. “I learned about it in a cycling article and thought it would be a great idea for Morristown.”

Ruddick is director of Gran Fondo NJ (GFNJ), and since 2011, cyclists from all over the world have been drawn in, generating more than one million dollars in charitable contributions for local beneficiaries.

“We directly donate the money we raise,” Epstein said. “We work very hard, I’m very proud of what we’ve done.”

But it wasn’t always smooth sailing. Epstein explained that during their very first year the event experienced a few hiccups before getting off the ground.

“We had about 600 people signed up,”

Epstein recalled. “That was the year that Hurricane Irene showed up. A few days before the race, the governor declared a state of emergency and we had to postpone for three weeks! It worked out though in the end because we ended up having 800 people.”

Of the many nonprofits who have benefited, one organization, Homeless Solutions Inc., will be recognizing Epstein’s and Ruddick’s efforts. On March 2, Homeless Solutions Inc., will bestowing upon the two men the prestigious Dream Builder Award at their annual Dream Builders’ Bash at the Westin Governor Morris.

“It wasn’t something that we were expecting,” Epstein shared, “but Bill and I are both very honored by it. I chose Homeless Solutions because of how they serve their communities, they do a great job.”

Epstein fondly recalls an instance after donating $12,500 to Homeless Solutions Inc., to help one of their local shelters.

Non Profit Bike Camp Turns Riders With Challenges Into Confident Bicyclists

By Cheryl Conway heels are in motion for a local bike camp to teach individuals with disabilities the skills to ride a two-wheel bicycle. iCan Bike–Randolph, N.J. is set to be held this summer, August 6-10, at the County College of Morris gymnasium in Randolph. The camp is being run under the auspices of iCan Shine, an international charitable nonprofit 501 (C) (3) organization; as well as support from the Morris Area Freewheelers Foundation, Marty’s Reliable Cycle and AAA. Held throughout the country, with five camps offered in New Jersey, iCan Bike-Randolph, N.J., brings this great opportunity closer to area residents to learn the best techniques in this popular sport.

From learning how to put on a helmet, to wrapping a leg around the bike, to pedaling, balancing and foot motion, individuals can learn the skills required to a successful bike ride.

“Sometimes such little steps can mean a lot,” says Judy Lauber of Belmar, co-host for the upcoming Randolph camp along with Diane Doherty of Bloomfield. “They say 80 percent by the end of the class will be able to get out on their own without assistance.”

Using adapted custom-built bike equipment with guidance from trained professionals and volunteers, participants in the

five-day iCan Bike program receive 75 minutes of daily instruction. The riders will have two to three volunteer spotters to encourage them and provide physical support if needed while riding.

The goal is for each rider to graduate to their own bicycle by the end of the week.

“It’s a specialized bike,” explains Lauber. Instead of training wheels used with new riders, “this is a roller that is modified,” to allow the rider to “ease into balancing the bike.”

On the back, is a handle so a volunteer can hold the back to support the rider.

On Tuesday, known as Tandem Tuesday at the camp, riders will each take a turn to ride on a tandem bicycle with the instructor.

“They are in front pseudo-steering but the instructor is really steering from the rear,” says Lauber, which will allow the instructor to see the riders’ struggles and take measures to overcome.

The “instructor can see whether they are shaking in the back or if they are wobbling,” says Lauber. “They get to see what’s going on with the participant.”

Cost is $200 to attend the camp. Fundraisers are being held to help this nonprofit offset its cost for using the gym, paid professionals to teach the riders, t-shirts and trophies.

Riders must be at least 8

years old, weigh below 220 pounds, and be faced with a disability.

The camp is “for people with disabilities; it can be a physical disability; it can be a mental disability,” says Lauber.

Participants include children and adults, “as long as they can step in and over a bike,” says Lauber.

Each registrant fills out a form to specify any restrictions as well as interests so volunteers can engage in conversation during the day, adds Lauber.

Each rider will have two to three volunteers assisting them at the camp. Volunteers to help at the camp must be at least 15 years old.

Due to space limitation, eight riders are accepted per session. There are five sessions per day, with riders attending the same session time every day. With eight riders per session, the camp is able to work with a total of 40 riders.

Parents or caregivers are required to stay at the camp session, which can beneficial.

They get to see their child having fun riding a bike and learn techniques if practice is still required at home; they learn how to hold the seat if practice is still required, explains Lauber.

An avid bike rider for more than 20 years as a participant in bike trips throughout the United States, Canada and parts of Europe, Lauber first volunteered last year with Doherty as spotters at the iCan Bike in Lincroft held August 2017 at Brookdale Community College.

met through a bike club 30 years ago and are currently members of the bike club through Marty’s Reliable Cycle with shops in Randolph, Morristown and Hackettstown.

The two ladies were contacted through their bike club to volunteer at the iCan Bike in Lincroft.

With such great feedback from riders and parents, and a need for more camps, Doherty got the wheels rolling to start a camp in this area, explains Lauber.

“For the campers, it improved self-esteem, confidence and physical fitness,” as stated in a press release. “Biking has the potential for being a family activity since everyone can ride together. Biking proved to be a monumental accomplishment. Everyone from campers to parents and volunteers were thrilled with the iCan Bike experience!”

Lauber explains, “Cost is getting a gym. Three of the days they are in a gym. If you can get a college gym, you need space; there’s eight people riding bikes” at one time.

CCM donated the use of their gym for the week.”

With Marty’s Reliable Cycle right down the road, “he will be the bike support,” says Lauber. “He will be there talking about bikes, and fitting.”

Adults With Asperger’s Invited To Join Social Group For Monthly Gatherings

By Cheryl Conway t is not always easy to connect with people socially after one graduates from college but by getting involved with a nearby social group, adults with Asperger Syndrome can make new friends and socialize.

In its fifth year, The Asperger’s Adult Social Group of N.J., has grown to about 25 members who meet once monthly to participate in a planned activity. Members are seeking even more adults to get involved and join in on the fun.

“Our current members have asked that we continue to grow, so I am spreading the word,” says Debra Burke of Budd Lake, founder of the The Asperger’s Adult Social Group of N.J. “It’s a good core group; hoping to get more members.”

Established in October 2013, Burke and her 34 year old daughter, Jaclyn, had discussed how great it would be to have a social support group for adults with Aspergers “since we hadn’t heard of anything like that in our part of N.J.,” says Burke. “Since then connections have grown, new friendships have been made, and it’s truly a wonderful thing.”

While “there’s a lot of support for children with Asperger’s, once they get out

of college there’s not enough outlets,” she says. Jaclyn, who graduated from Mt. Olive High School and attended County College of Morris in Randolph, was 31 when they began the group.

“I just felt there was a need for adults with Asperger’s to have a social outlet,” says Burke. Other adults were asking for such a group as well, she says.

The Burkes went to a meeting in Morristown but it turned out to be more of a support group. She and a couple of parents agreed they wanted more of a social group for their kids.

Intimidated at first, she admits, to begin such a program, Burke attended a workshop held at Saint Claire’s Hospital in Denville to learn how she could start such a group.

“I knew I could do that; I can throw a party,” she says. So she decided to organize an event once a month, varying days of the week held.

Members meet once a month at different types of social get togethers such as dinner at an Italian restaurant, Hibachi, bowling nights, summer barbecue, swimming party, pizza and dessert party. Future events include impov nights, pottery classes, wine and painting and movie nights.

Asperger Syndrome is considered a very high functioning autism. Affected children and adults can have difficulty with social interactions and exhibit a restricted range of interests and/or repetitive behaviors.

Of the members, Burke says, “it’s an amazing, positive group of people. It’s grown into

a community of people; the friendships,” not only for the members but for their families, as well, “having a sense of community to share the friendships. It’s evolved so much.”

The next function on the group’s calendar is to attend a Paint and Wine event on March 11. Events usually last for two hours, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on weeknights; 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. on weekends.

Explorer Post Clues Teens In On Law Careers

By Julie Ross eenagers from towns throughout Morris County are getting a close-up look at the legal profession thanks to Law Explorer Post 22, offered as part of the Exploring career education program sponsored by Boy Scouts of America subsidiary Learning for Life.

Geared toward young men and women ages 14 to 21 years old, the Exploring program is intended to provide experiences that help its participants mature and prepare them to become responsible, caring adults. Explorer Posts typically focus on a single career field, such as law, police work, fire/ rescue, healthcare, aviation, or the like, and may be sponsored by a government or business entity.

Law Explorer Post 22 was founded in 2012 and is chartered to the Morris County Bar Foundation. Foundation trustees Andrew Jacobs, attorney at the Law Offices of Andrew R. Jacobs, Cedar Knolls, and Linda Mainenti-Walsh, attorney at Ceconi & Cheifetz, LLC, in Summit lead monthly Saturday morning meetings and invite guest speakers, including judges, prosecutors and attorneys practicing in a wide

variety of fields, including criminal, family, environmental and intellectual property law. Other activities and off-site visits to destinations of interest, such as courts, may be added this year as participants’ interest dictates, said Al Thomas, senior district executive at Boy Scouts of America.

Seven youngsters signed up to participate in Law Explorer Post 22 in 2018. At the first meeting of the year, held on February 3, featured guest speaker Carolyn F. O’Connor, discussed the environment and culture of a large law firm.

O’Connor is a regional managing partner of Wilson Elser, LLP, a national law firm, and a member of the firm’s equity committee. She is also a member of the firm’s equity committee, and serves as its equity partnership chairperson and chairperson of the women’s initiative committee. Jacobs and Mainenti-Walsh also addressed the group, describing their work. Jacobs’ firm specializes in personal injury law, and Mainenti-Walsh’s firm handles matrimonial matters.

Robots To Do Battle At MOHS

tudent-built robots from 40 high school teams in New Jersey and Pennsylvania will battle each other in the Mid-Atlantic District FIRST Robotics Competition at Mt. Olive High School on March 9 to March 11.

In conjunction with the competition, the school will host its first “Marauder Maker Fest,” featuring science and technology activities for all ages, on March 10.

Both events are free and open to the public.

The robots will compete for district rankings in a game called “Power Up.” Modeled after a retro video game, the competition requires robots to team up to gain control of a seesaw-like scale by placing more milk crate-sized cubes on their side of the scale. The team can also gain points for “power-up” advantages by stacking cubes in a vault.

Top-ranked robots after district competitions advance to regional and, potentially, world robotics events later this spring.

Teams also compete for various awards, including the prestigious Chairman’s Award for its overall program. The Mt. Olive competition, which annually attracts more than 2,000 students, parents and community members, this year will include robots from Pennsylvania as well as teams from Morris, Sussex, Warren, Somerset, Bergen, Passaic, Hunterdon, Essex, Mercer, Union, Middlesex and Hudson counties.

“The Marauder Maker Fest’s goal is to demonstrate how school districts in Morris County and beyond are celebrating both STEAM [Science, Technology Education, Arts, Math] education and ‘making,’” said Gretel T. Perez, Mt. Olive School District director of science and STEAM. “Therefore, many schools have been invited to exhibit work students have done. There will be tours, musical performances, competitions in art and a pinewood derby, a drones’ exhibition and so much more.”

Fest exhibitors will include Bloomfield Robotigers robotics team students demonstrating projects including using 3D printing of hands for children in need and providing a prosthetic to help a crippled dog live a better life; and Rockaway Township giving an Ozobot demonstration, with activities to help participants of all ages learn to code using color.

Also, the Chatham School District’s design and technology teacher will showcase

course projects and demonstrate prototypes and robots, and a Jefferson School District teacher will demonstrate how to use an Xbox Kinect for scanning and 3D printing.

“The Mt. Olive School district felt that the Maker Fest- this celebration of student ingenuity and design - was a natural fit with the robotics competition being held at the school on this weekend,” said Ernie DiCicco, event coordinator. “Principal Kevin Stansberry thought that there could be no better event to hold the Make Fest with than our FRC event because of the obvious STEAM connection.”

Morris Accepting Historic Preservation Applications

he Morris County Historic Preservation Trust Fund is accepting grant applications for the 2018 funding round. A historic resource must be listed or certified as eligible for listing on the New Jersey and the National Register of Historic Places to be eligible for a matching grant.

Eligible applicants are municipalities, qualified non-profit organizations and the county.

Application forms, rules and regulations for the 2018 grant round of the Historic Preservation Trust Fund are available at planning.morriscountynj.gov.

The Declaration of Intent is due at Morris County on Feb. 28. March 29 is the grant application deadline.

According to program coordinator Ray Chang, three types of applications are available.

Projects that are princi-

pally construction related will require a Construction Application.

Grant requests for acquisition and preservation planning documents should be completed on a Preservation Planning Application; Grant requests for the preparation of Construction Documents should be completed on the Construction Documents Application.

The Morris County Historic Preservation Trust Fund Review Board recommended $2.9 million in county grants from the county’s 2017 Preservation Trust Fund to help preserve, restore, or protect 24 historic sites in 15 towns across Morris County.

The recommendations, which were approved by the Morris County Board of Freeholders, included grants

ranging from $2,746 for the Woman’s Club of Morristown headquarters building to $283,560 for the South Street Presbyterian Church in Morristown and $280,401 for the Museum of Early Trades and Crafts in Madison.
