Denville Resident in Dire Need of a Kidney

By Tina Pappas otherhood was one of the greatest joys for Debra Kaufman. Her pregnancy resulted in having a son, Bryan, now in his 30s. However, the pregnancy at the time also resulted in preeclampsia, a pregnancy complication characterized by high blood pressure and signs of damage to another organ system. In many cases, it negatively impacts the liver and kidneys. Preeclampsia ultimately damaged Debra’s kidneys.

“I was out hospitalized for five weeks prior to delivery,” Debra explained. “The doctors never placed me on any high blood pressure medication, it was strictly bed rest. After giving birth in 1985, I was being treated for high blood pressure. The condition let to end stage renal disease approximately eight years later, which was the reason I was retaining fluid and feeling nauseous.”

The doctors determined that Debra had kidney failure and that she would need a kidney transplant, or she would be on dialysis for the rest of her life.

“This was all foreign to me when I was told that I had to undergo surgery to have a fistula created to provide access for the dialysis treatments,” she said. “I had dialysis for six months, but then my sister unselfishly donated her kidney. Everything worked perfect-

ly after I got the transplanted kidney from her.”

Debra’s husband and son were not a match after being tested, but her sister Karen was a perfect match to be her donor. In 1993, she received her sister’s kidney, which lasted 25 years.

In 2017, she found out that she needed to have cardiac bypass surgery, which required an angiogram. The dye from the angiogram was unfortunately toxic to the kidney.

“The doctors found I had a blockage in my heart and was in need of a double bypass operation,” she added.

“As a result, my heart condition was addressed but my kidney failed. I have been back on dialysis since.”

Now 60, Debra is hoping to receive another kidney donor for a second kidney transplant. She is now a Type1 diabetic. She and her husband of 40 years, Allan, are originally from the Bronx, N.Y. and moved to Parsippany in 1990. They currently reside in Denville. They both have received training for Debra to do dialysis at home, so she would not have to go to a center for treatment.

“We make our own schedule, but we must do the treatment four times a week and each session is four hours long from start to finish,” she further explained. “It makes trying to get around virtually impossible because

She has to also make sure that they have an available seat for her ahead of time. Otherwise, she and Allan cannot go because it’s extremely difficult traveling with a dialysis machine.

Debra is an A+ blood type She can also receive A or O blood types, but even if someone is not a match, the Paired Exchange program is an option because patients with incompatible donors can swap kidney to receive a compatible kidney. The program is used in situations where a potential donor is incompatible.

“Even if you’re not a match, many hospitals have the Paired Exchange programs,” she said, adding that she is working with New York Presbyterian Hospital, Weill Cornell Hospital and Renewal to coordinate the transplant.

The surgeons have indicated that Debra’s best chance for a successful transplant is a living donor. Her case in more complicated than most since she has had two pancreas transplants due to her diabetes.

“I hope there is an angel out there willing to provide this gift of life,” she added.

Debra added that she has had many people volunteer to be tested, including friends and family, but there have been no matches and does not have other siblings.

“There were two matches but one person could not donate due to health reasons and the other person had a change of mind,” she added.

Debra said it has been extremely hard not having her life back. She previously worked in Manhattan for many years before working for her husband in his accounting office. She is currently working at home due to her kidney disease and Covid-19.

She said her abilities have been significantly reduced due to her drained strength.

She has also volunteered in the past with many causes through her Synagogue and by speaking locally on behalf of donor awareness. She has also helped raise money for the NKF (National Kidney Foundation).

“I’m very dependent on people, like my husband who has been my caregiver,” she said. “But I’m just trying to go back to be who I was in having people rely on me instead of my relying on them. Just trying to

Denville Man Publishes Book About 1953 Incident

By Steve Sears or Denville resident and Kinnelon High School history teacher, Peter Zablocki, it’s not and never enough to read up on and educate others on the subject.

He writes about it, too.

Zablocki, also Vice-President of the Denville Historical Society, Museum, and Research Center, has already written and published Denville Goes to War: Denville’s Story of World War I, but now the History Press has published his The Denville 13: Murder, Redemption & Forgiveness in Small-Town New Jersey, the story of a 1953 killing of a 30-something-year-old that at the time involved supposedly 13 young males.

Soon to come in August is Denville in World War II, and another work regarding three plane crashes in 58 days in Elizabeth in 1951 will be published before the new year.

The idea for The Denville 13: Murder, Redemption Photos courtesy of Peter Zablocki & Forgiveness in Small-Town New Jersey came while he was interviewing veterans for his third book. “A lot of times they would tell me, ‘You know, there is this murder that happened in Denville in the 1950s’. And I always brushed it off because my impetus was to try to get information about scrap drives and things like that from World War II. However, it kept on coming up.”

His interest piqued, Zablocki Googled it, and found nothing, scanned pdf files at the museum of the then Denville newspaper, The Denville Herald, and found that three pages of the September 3, 1953 issue were missing. “It’s the only random three pages missing out of the entire file of roughly 15 years or so,” he says. Next, his efforts with microfiche uncovered the fact that the entire first issue of September 1953 was now non-existent. “And then we actually have crates of newspapers in the museum itself. We have real newspapers; someone had collected them and donated them to us. So, I went through the crates, and I got to the 1953 crate, and every single one of the issues is there except that one.”

A freelance historian had compiled some newspaper clippings of the murder, but there was no indication what newspaper the clippings came from; all were scotch taped in a notebook that was inside a folder. However, it was enough to get Zablocki the exact date of the murder and the names of those involved. He contacted the Morristown Historical Society, where he was able to go through The Daily Record archives, which covered the incident extensively, and he also reached out to the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office, through whom per his credentials he was granted permission to look at the incident file, he the first one to do so since 1953. His eager eyes now met with pictures, autopsy reports, statements, anything connected with the murder.

In brief, the victim, who had previously spent a few years in jail as a pedophile, arrived in Denville that summer and attempts to do the same, first hanging out with youngsters in town, and then trying to get involved with a 14-year-old. “These boys are as young as 14,” Zablocki says. “There are 13 boys all together that are supposedly involved in this murder. One is 22-years-old, everybody else is a teenager. And they essentially plan that they’re going to teach this guy lesson.” The man is beaten severely, and all the boys are arrested within 48 hours, but only one, the 22-year-old, spends time in jail.

“This was the largest indictment for single murder in American history up to that point,” says Zablocki.

“I hope that this book kind of clears up a lot of the rumors” says Zablocki. “13 is not the correct number. Out of those 13, really, I would say probably the better number would be like four or five. Some of the kids were just really in the wrong place at the wrong time.”

Of the 13, 10 have died, two are unaccounted for, and one was still alive but living out of state in 2018.

Retiree Educates Via Lectures About New Jersey’s Revolutionary War History

By Steve Sears hen Joel Farkas, Revolutionary War buff and lecturer, saw his days as a business owner dwindling to a possible end, he started to ponder life as a retiree and becoming a…what?

“One day I decided, ‘Well, you know what? Maybe it’s time for me to consider retiring.’ So, I said like I think a lot of people do. ‘All right, I’m going to retire, then what am I going to do all day?’”

He started with his iPhone, listing in the “Notes” section under a heading “Retirement” any ideas that came to his mind, that list growing to about 20 things.

Volunteering was the first thing he did, serving the National Park Service as a volunteer docent tour guide at Washington’s Headquarters in Morristown. “However,” he says, “lecturing was the furthest thing from my mind.”

In the process of his researching the Ford Mansion history, he says, “One thing would lead to another and to another. You can’t help but get involved with other things. And one day I said, ‘You know, I’ve got all this information. I want to share it with people.’

As a tour guide, of course, I have to talk about the Ford Mansion and things casually related and fill in a few things here and

there, but there’s so much more I want to talk about. I just found it fantastic.”

“That gave me the idea to write a lecture.”

That initial writing and presenting of that first lecture has led to 20 more. Farkas, 77, a Denville resident and a graduate of Ohio State University who served as an officer in the United Sates Army, has an involved lecture schedule with a variety of topics.

He presents them to libraries, schools, and organizations. “I am finding that there is an interest in the founding of our country,” he says with great enthusiasm.

As a tour guide, Farkas always gets three questions about George Washington. “Number one, did he have false teeth?

Were his false teeth wood? Well, they were never wood. The answer is a definitive, ‘No.’ Question number two: ‘How did George Washington die?’ He died from what doctors today call acute bacterial epiglottitis.” And then there’s that cheery tree tale. “What is this whole thing with. ‘Father, I cannot tell a lie?’ Actually, there was a lot of myths about George Washington, the wooden teeth, for one thing. The cherry tree, we know where it came from and I go into the story, etc. Those are the three most asked questions as a tour guide.” As for lec-

turing, one topic visitors bring up regularly is about women and their contributions to our American Revolution. “I cannot begin to tell you how interesting this research was,” he says of the topic, and it goes beyond Martha Washington and Abigail Adams.

“Oh my word, there are so many interesting women, and they’re interesting because of what they did.”

Randolph Woman Encourages Early Childhood Vision Care Awareness

By Steve Sears atherine Gardner, a senior at the Morris County School of Technology, has her heart in the right place.

She’s seeking to become a Gold Award Girl Scout, the highest attainable honor from the honorable group, but you know by speaking with her that the cause she’s focused on is really the most important thing of all. She’s trying to help get a bill passed that would mandate vision screenings for youngsters before they go into preschool and encourages parents to be cognizant of the need to do so.

The cause is one Gardner is familiar with.

She has been blind in her right eye since birth. “When I was about six years old, it was around the time where a lot of kids were getting glasses,” she says. “I’m not sure how exactly I did this or how I got the idea to do this, but I covered my left eye, and realized I couldn’t see out of my right eye. And I said to my mom, ‘Mommy, I can’t see so well. I see peach.’”

After Gardner’s school nurse also discovered the young girl couldn’t see, an appointment was made with various optometrists, and then a glaucoma specialist, Dr. Steven Kane, who diagnosed her with pediatric congenital glaucoma. After several surgeries, she was still able to see out of her left eye, but unfortunately not her right eye.

As part of Gardner’s quest of prevention of vision loss in young children, Dr. Danielle Gaeta and Dr. Heema Patel of Advanced Eyecare Associates in Ledgewood, New Jersey, will provide a no-cost eye assessment clinic for babies 6-12 months old on Friday, March 19, 2021, from 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Parents should call (973) 584-2020 to make an appointment. Gardner, who as a Girl Scout earned her Bronze Award in elementary school and Silver Award in middle school, encourages parents to take advantage of the gracious Advanced Eyecare Associates offer. “Parents with young children - they take their kids to the pediatrician and the dentist, but they forget the eye doctor. And it’s something that’s needed,” Gardner says.

It’s very important for parents to realize that a visit to the eye doctor is necessary.”

“Katherine’s biggest focus here – her ‘vision,’ so to speak – is to have all children’s eyes checked, at least before pre-school. At least one eye exam by a doctor. The focus should be on awareness,” says Karen Gardner, her mom. She then continues. “She (Katherine) is remarkable. She pursues life like anyone else, is eager to take on differ-

ent challenges, and in this case, she really wholeheartedly wants to make a difference, not just for children who have vision loss or even potential vision loss, but to have all kids be able to be well, to have a good quality of life. I am so proud of her. She’s learning to be a special education teacher through the Morris County School of Technology, and she really has a passion for kids and children, and she wants them to have the best quality of life and to reach the best potential. So, this is another one of the ways that she is pursuing that.”

How is Your Fitness Doing?

ou may have a financial plan, a childcare plan, a career plan, but do you have a fitness plan?

Morris County Vocational School District and County College of Morris Introduce Criminal Justice Program for High School Students

he Morris County Vocational School District, in partnership with County College of Morris (CCM), offers a new share time program, Criminal Justice, for Morris County high school students. The program is for students interested in law, public safety, corrections, and security.

Students will learn through college-level work and hands-on activities. “We are thrilled to offer a new program for high school students who are interested in pursuing careers in criminal justice and public safety. We know many high school students will be excited to get a jump start in earning college credits in this subject area”, said Shari Castelli, Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum & Instruction at Morris County Vocational School District.

Coursework will include Intro to Public Safety Careers, Criminology, Intro to Policing, Intro to Emergency Management, Juvenile Delinquency, Criminal Law and Procedure, Forensic Science, and Cultural Diversity. Castelli also stated the program would include strong private and public-sector program partners who offer workbased learning experiences through industry partnerships.

Upon completion of the two-year program, students will earn 36 credits from CCM with three possible pathways after graduation for career advancement: 1) Direct entry into the workforce with college credit 2) One-year completion of Associate Degree 3) Transfer with advanced standing to a four- year college or university Students in 10th grade may apply via online application at www.mcvts.org/apply, click on Share Time Programs. The district’s share time programs provide half-day specialized career and technical education training as part of a student’s junior and senior year high school program.

Denville and the Polio Vaccine Debacle of 1956

By Peter Zablocki part from the more deadly Spanish Flu, Poliomyelitis (Polio) was considered the scariest disease of the first part of the twentieth century. It was highly contagious and once an outbreak started it seemed nearly impossible to stop it. The disease popularized by President Franklin D. Roosevelt (FDR) was quick to strike children through attacking their central nervous systems, resulting in muscle deterioration, paralysis, and sometimes death. It was nothing short of a miracle when in 1955 inventor Jonas Salk, after years of research and trials found a safe and effective vaccine. The only thing left to do was to distribute it to the millions of children across the nation and the world. That would be easier said and done.

Jonas Salk caused quite a stir in the medical community when he announced that the vaccine would not be patented. In his belief, supported by the Federal and State governments, no person should own or privately profit off a vaccine designed to save an entire population and its posterity. In the end, it was the government’s bad rollout and unclear direction regarding the immunization which left the nation in a state of confusion and without a unified message.

Add the tense political climate of the Cold

War with its hatred of communism to the mix, and the situation was ripe for disaster.

After initially mismanaging the delivery of the inoculations to the people, the national government finally allowed each state to direct their own efforts. By then it was too late. As each state sent its own allotment of the vaccine to each township, the Salk Polio Vaccine had already become a political and bureaucratic issue.

“What will Denville do with 1,200 doses of polio vaccine given by the state is still a question,” proclaimed a January 19, 1956 article from the Denville Herald. As the inoculations sat in the refrigerator belonging to the township engineer and the school nurse Mr. and Mrs. Robert Jenkins, the town debated. The board of health and its health officer were in quite a bind. While the preferred method of distribution was to open up a free town clinic which would inoculate all children under the age of 14 free of charge, the idea went firmly against the American Medical Association (A.M.A.) and the New Jersey Medical Society. Jumbled up in politics and bureaucratic blundering, the medical societies saw any attempt to establish free clinics as socialized [event communist-esque] medicine which would take profits away from private practices across the nation.

By late January, any free clinic in Denville was unlikely. That is not to say that the bind was only felt in the small Morris County township. In fact, all surrounding towns throughout the county and the state were facing the same dilemma. With the medical societies turning their thumbs down, local doctors – who had already purchased their own supplies of vaccines – bluntly refused to lend their services to any proposed Polio clinics. Dr. John Gauer, the Denville Main Street School Physician explained that while families would have to pay for their doctor visits when going for their immunizations [Polio included], as was always the case when being seen in the office, the doctors in town would cover the cost for any family that was unable to afford it. This of course did not solve Mayor Hogan’s issue. Having been sent over one thousand doses from the state, he had to content with the fact that the said medicine came with a short shelf life and expiration date. Compounding the issue was the fat that the township Health Officer, H.L. Hamilton backed Gauer’s stance on the basis that “patients receive a thorough examination before they are inoculated in doctors’ offices, but if they get the vaccine at a clinic it is a mass treatment affair with no time for individual attention.” The town, like its neighbors across the state, was at a stalemate. Across town in Mrs. Jenkins’ fridge, the miracle Polio vaccine sat quietly, each day closer to its expiration date, its own demise, and the potential of hundreds of children being exposed to one of the most terrifying diseases of their time.

As municipal health boards across the state were left in the same position, and thus unable to administer the supplies of vaccine that they had on hand, Denville Mayor John Hogan needed to make an executive decision that would potentially cost him any hope for a re-election bid. The American Medical Association and the New Jersey Medical Society which bound the will of local doctors would come to not like his eventual choice of action. Without a single local doctor participating, Mr. Hogan and the Denville Board of Health went as far as Bedminster, New Jersey to find a doctor willing to administer the vaccine at their Polio clinic which opened on a cold Friday morning, February 3, 1956 at the Denville Main Street School.

“I know we will be criticized by the medical society, but the health of the people is more important than the hierarchy of the A.M.A.,” stated the Mayor the day before the community effort. “We don’t want to be on the spot, if a Polio epidemic should occur, of being reminded that we sent back the vaccine to the state.” Assisted by volunteer nurses from the town – many who gave up their profession to become stay-at-home mothers after World War II – Dr. M.J. Powell of Bedminster, singlehandedly administered

684 Polio vaccine shots. When the Red Cross got wind of the small town’s Mayor’s defiance of the medical societies, they sent in professional nurses who arrived by mid-day to assist in the effort. The doctor would go on to receive a Citizenship Award from the Denville Post 2519, Veterans of Foreign Wars for his actions that day.

Like a story that belongs in Frank Capra’s monumental feel-good holiday movie, “It’s a Wonderful Life,” the clinic – first of its kind in Morris County – spurred on overall change throughout the state. “Congratulations to Denville and their forward-looking Mayor John Hogan for setting up a Salk Polio vaccine clinic,” stated a mail bag letter of February 9, 1956 to the editor of the Denville Herald. Another proclaimed, “When the Polio season starts, Denville will be one town that will be thankful it offered the Salk vaccinee program to its residents.” And another, “Other towns might well take note of this.”

Within weeks, the Health Boards of nearby Rockaway, Mountain Lakes and Boonton followed Denville’s lead and opened their own clinics in direct opposition to local doctors and medical societies. An action that potentially saved many children from an unfortunate fate.

According to the Morris County Chapter of the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis (N.F.I.P.), the 1955 outbreak of Polio was very costly for the county, making a successful rollout of the vaccine that much more important. The local organization spent more than $85,000 of the March of Dimes funds in patient care while assisting 56 families across the county where Polio stuck. The March of Dimes, a nonprofit organization founded by FDR, had a very strong presence in the county since its creation in he late 1930s. Among various national drives, it also organized, sponsored, and encouraged more local fundraisers throughout the country to help raise funds for Polio research and for assistance to those impacted by the disease. In February of 1956, as the Salk Vaccine was being reluctantly distributed across the county, the Morris County Men’s and Women’s Bowling Association continued on page 22

And although the vaccine was already created and the potential end to the disease was in sight, the tourney surpassed its high mark of $4,000 set the year prior.

Adjusted for inflation, that is equivalent in purchasing power to nearly $39,000 today.

And while some might have found what happened next a big surprise, the citizens of Denville most certainly did not. Following the first round of the vaccinations administered by Dr. Powell, the second round of inoculations scheduled for March of that year was attended and led by all Denville doctors who chose to ignore the A.M.A. This time, as volunteer mothers kept order in the lines of children at the local school, the youngsters were met with friendly faces of their family doctors once volunteer nurses led them to their seats where they received their first or second dose of shots. Perhaps it would be boasting to say that the small town of Denville, the so-called Hub of Morris County, became the beacon of hope for the successful rollout of the Polio vaccine across the county or the state. After all, it was one of the first of its kind.

Perhaps it would be a bit of an exaggeration to give it that much credit. Still, there is

no denying that what transpired in the small North New Jersey town could fit into the plot of a Frank Capra’s 1946 classic of redemption and a town coming together for the better good. In Denville, it was a story of one man against a bureaucratic juggernaut. A story of another willing to sacrifice the respect of his fellow professional colleagues by traveling to another town and administering hundreds of vaccines. A story of ultimate redemption of doctors who cared enough for their patients to risk the wrath of their overseeing organizations. And a story of how sometimes a change for the better does not always have to originate with government to succeed.

After all, the narrative of our nation’s history, starts and ends not with not with bureaucracy or politics, but with the people themselves. That and their ability to overcome their differences and work together for the betterment of our communities. As Benjamin Franklin once said, “All mankind is divided into three classes: those that are immovable, those that are movable, and those that move.” For the story of Denville, Morris County as a whole, and the vaccine debacle of 1956, there is no truer proverb.

Letter to the Editor: Sound Bytes

We can’t even begin to count the sounds that we hear all around us. We are surrounded constantly by them. They interrupt everything. They come from the world around us like an unending marching band showing no sign in stopping.

The news. What is it today? Is it news on Covid? Are we hearing how many people we have lost in our country, in our world? It seems to never end. Turn the TV on every morning, walk through your kitchen and ask Alexa to play the news. How many more people lost their lives? How many people are waiting and hoping for the vaccine? Then, a commercial.

It seems to play louder than the program we were just hearing.

Good grief, why does it need to be so loud? So, what is on the commercial slate for today? Is it a commercial of lawyers, urging you call if you have been negatively affected by a medication

you have taken? Is it a commercial about how your skin is aging and what you absolutely need to do to the remedy it and by the way, do it now! You don’t have a minute to lose if you’re not going to become an old goat walking around this world actually showing people that you have been here for a while, thank the Lord.

Or perhaps, you watch and hear the commercial that seems to be 15 minutes long, you know the one, it’s about how many dogs are unloved, uncared for, suffering, starving and alone.

The news continues to crash in our ears as we listen. Trump, Biden, left, right, please make it stop, it is exhausting our souls.

We have sounds from our job, in our own house, kids complaining that life is not being fair right now. They can’t physically go to school; they can’t go out and do the fun things that they used to do. So very unfair, they’re life is so very unfair. And you hear it, your ears sting with thoughts of possibly, “you don’t know how

lucky you actually are” or you hear yourself say for the hundredth time, “things will go back to normal soon.”

Too many sounds. Way too many. But what if we took the time to step away from all those sounds and find a place, a space, to just listen to hear nothing from around us, but work on a quiet place within us. Impossible? No, it is there waiting for us.

I wake this morning with an unusual empty house. Quiet is all around. Nice. So nice. Then, that ol’ crashing wave again. I lay listing all my woes, everything on the to-do list, and everything that I can’t fix. Then I realize, that it is just more noise. Stop girl, time to just stop. So, lots of deep breathes, let me ground myself, let me hear quiet, instead of sounds. So, after much effort and several minutes, it’s happening.

I can hear the quiet. My mind is starting to calm and seems to take off a too-tight seat belt that you sometimes feel in the car when you hit the brakes. For

me, it sounded like this. I could hear my breathing. I could hear my aching heart thanking me for union break. Then, my mind went deeper. I could hear the blowing wind of the graveyard where my father-in-law was laid to rest in April, stupid Covid. I could hear that wind that day in my mind.

It sounds like the earth breathing, like big gulps of cold, fresh air from its ancient lungs. Thank you old wind for the calm. I hear that sound. I hear the sound of my husband’s hand rubbing my arm; his hands, finger nails and all, are scratchy, dry, weathered from work and life, and the rubbing sound on my arm that he is making is rough, and beautiful to me. I can hear the sound in my mind of music from the church I used to physically sit it, preCovid, and it is solemn, reverent, and connecting. Is that now the sound of my soul? The soul I have been carrying around since birth?

The one that I shut out because it’s too buried under life’s noise?

The distant recollection of your grandfather’s voice? The incredible sound of joy when you held your baby for the first time, when the hospital room went silent in your head, and you could hear love, actually hear it, like angels singing from a new little baby in your arms. Can you hear your faith deep inside? Try, is speaking. Mine is saying, ‘you are held by something so much larger; I’ve got you, relax.

Colorectal Cancer: Screening and Prevention

By Chris Bauer MD arch was first declared National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month by President Clinton in February of 2020. Since that time colorectal cancer advocacy, research, and awareness has increased dramatically.

Colorectal cancer is any cancerous condition that affects the large intestine or rectum. According to the American Cancer Society, colorectal cancer is the third most common cause of cancer death in females and in men. It is the second leading cause of death. Becoming knowledgeable about colorectal cancer is essential for everyone’s wellbeing.

There are many genetic and environmental factors that can increase a person’s risk for colorectal cancer. A family medical history of Lynch syndrome or other colonic polyp syndromes does confer a significant risk for people to develop colon cancer. Many times, genetic testing and meeting with a genetic counselor can determine if a person is a carrier for these genetic cancer syndromes. Additionally, inflammatory bowel diseases such ulcerative colitis and Crohns Disease show a strong connection with colorectal cancer.

Several lifestyle factors such as smoking, alcohol use, and increased BMI all are factors that confer a higher risk of getting colorectal cancer. Increased consumption of processed meat and red meat have also been shown to increase one’s risk of getting colorectal cancer.

Just as there are many risk factors for colorectal cancer, there are also many protective factors that can assist people in lowering their risk of getting colorectal cancer. Having a healthy diet and regular physical exercise are two of the greatest preventative measures one can take to lower their risk of getting colorectal cancer. Planned walking routines as

well as building more activity such as having more steps in your daily life are just some of the ways to accomplish this.

However, the mechanism is unknown as to why increased levels of aerobic physical activity causes people to have lower levels of colorectal cancer. Additionally, what we consume in our diet also plays a tremendous role in our odds of developing colorectal cancer. Personal diets that are high in fruits and vegetables are essential in doing this. Taking fiber daily, increasing daily vitamin B6 intake, and adding calcium supplementation and dairy products in your diet also can be quite helpful.

Colorectal cancer can be treated most successfully if it is identified early. It is particularly important that the warning signs of early cancer are discussed. Screening for colorectal is essential in diagnosing asymptomatic people with cancer.

The most common symptom of this cancer is a change in bowel habits. Other common symptoms of colorectal cancers include abdominal pain, blood in the stool and unexplained iron deficient anemia. Abdominal bloating and extreme nausea and vomiting are signs of advanced disease.

Screening for colorectal cancer is a major preventative care initiative in the United States. Screening is recommended beginning at age 45 to 50 years of age depending on which guidelines are used. Additionally, if a close relative had colorectal cancer or you have had another type of cancer screening may need to be initiated earlier.

The most common way to screen for colorectal cancer is by getting a colonoscopy. A colonoscopy is when a small camera is placed in the large intestine and small colonic polyps are removed or documented for further therapy. Other screening methods include testing stool samples for blood

and analyzing stool samples for different immunochemical particles that may indicate the presence of cancer. People should discuss with their physician which screening test is right for them based on their individual medical history.

By raising colorectal cancer awareness and by getting timely colorectal screening tests we can lower the rate of this deadly disease in New Jersey.

A Saint Patrick’s Day Story

By Richard Mabey Jr. n the Summer of 1905, Catherine Cavanaugh, a saddened widow with a six-year-old daughter, Bertha, left Cork County Ireland to come to America. At age 27, Catherine was pretty much alone in the world. Both of her parents had passed away. She had no aunts and uncles in Ireland. But, her mother’s sister, Shannon, lived in America with Shannon’s husband, Patrick McNulty.

What calls thy heart to leave hearth and home? What stirs thy veins to dream of finding a new start in life? For my great grandmother, Catherine Cavanaugh, the call came in the form of a series of letters from her Aunt Shannon, who lived in the Delawanna section of Clifton, New Jersey.

We think of bravery as the heart of the soldier, walking in the front line, charging across the field of Gettysburg. Or, the astronaut aboard a rocket headed for the far reaches of space. Or, our nation’s founding fathers, standing tall and proud for liberty. Yet, there lies in heart, a kind of quiet and tranquil and steadfast bravery. The immense courage of the immigrant who left hearth and home of their country, knowing that

they would never return, to come to this place of promise, they only knew as America.

Such was the heart-felt bravery of my dear great grandmother as she boarded ship, holding her daughter in one hand and her two steerage class tickets in her other hand. One single trunk, was all Catherine Cavanaugh had to bring all the earthly possessions of herself and her young daughter.

The steerage class was the lowest living quarters for a passenger crossing the vast Atlantic. It was the lowest deck of the ship, where the cargo was stored. The food for steerage class passengers was horrible. And, drinking water was not plentiful. Steerage class accommodations were usually terribly overcrowded. But for my great grandmother, one thing kept her strong as she crossed the Atlantic with her little daughter, my grandmother. And, that one thing was the hope of a better life.

Aunt Shannon wrote her niece, Catherine, many letters of the many factory jobs in Clifton and Paterson. This place called New Jersey, offered new hope for Catherine.

By Peter Zablocki osiah Hall stood motionless, darkness around him. From atop Beacon Mountain he could see for miles. He knew this land.

The hills, the plains, and the farms with homes resembling dark specs on an otherwise flawless canvas. It was the night of June 23rd, 1780, and around him was his hometown, Denville. He strained his eyes but did not see what he was looking for. News of a battle waging in nearby Springfield had arrived in the town that morning. Below the hill upon which Mr. Hall and his compatriots labored, many locals anxiously awaited his signal. As Josiah looked towards distant Springfield, he was startled by an excited dispatch rider galloping his horse up the hill towards him. And then he saw it himself. A dull red glare lighting the sky in the distance. He instantly ordered the prepared stack of brush in the shape of a pyramid to be set ablaze. As young men hurried around him throwing wet leaves on the fire to facilitate bigger smoke, Mr. Hall resumed his watch.

Only the presence of two fires meant victory, and to his dismay, Josiah was still merely seeing one.

“Morris County’s proudest boast is that no redcoat ever stepped on her soil ex-

cept as a prisoner of war,” said one-time Supreme Court Justice, Mahlon Pitney. That does not mean that the British never tried.

In fact, the inhabitants of this area had a good reason to worry. In Denville Township alone, there were four known forges before the Revolutionary War, one each at Shongum, Ninkey Pond, Cold-Rain and Franklin, all on the Den Brook.

Most of the iron ore also came from nearby Mine Hill and Rockaway’s Hibernia.

This supply of iron essential for cannon balls, together with the powder plants at Chatham and Mt. Tabor, were all very tempting for the British. As such, and because of the lack of proper means of communication,

The “Hog Rock,” or “Hog Pen” was located near “Rockaway Valley,” with many kids still finding corn cobs, dishes, and pieces of iron in the area nearly two centuries later. Once moved to the secret location, the people and animals would stay there for several days until a dispatcher would arrive with the news that it was safe to return. “Adjust the Procedure’

Robert Massimi Member Dramatists Guild and The Drama League. any of the current virtual plays being produced are thrown together and seem willy nilly, however, “ Adjust the Procedure” was written for and directed for virtual theater. In its efforts, Jake Shore makes better work of it than the virtual as usual style I have seen so far. Set on a university campus somewhere in lower Manhattan, New York (the play mentions Chamber Street); there are four characters, all of whom are affiliated with the university. These four characters have different personalities which adds to the many different positions that they take. The play is set in Zoom meetings with sometimes two characters, other times three actors and for a brief period, with all four being on the call. The crux of the play shows us the inner workings of a university; how universities are a very big business. With the COVID pandemic, we see four different points of view as how to deal with the many problems this pandemic has caused.

In Kyle (Adam Files) we see a professor who is hoping to get tenured. As a former adjunct professor, Kyle is bitter about the academia and the way some teachers are treated. Kyle has a deep understanding of the system, yet he is always bucking with that very system that employs him. After losing a student to an apparent suicide, and even more students to deportation, Kyle is perturbed at both his school and

the people that run it. It seems that the Health and Wellness Center at the school has been outsourced and this has caused many problems with the student body, yet it saves the university money by doing it.

Jake Shore who wrote and directed this play brings forth many of the problems people feel during this crisis; some people blame the politicians; others blame the boredom of everyday life under the pandemic. Shore banters about these issues through the eyes of not only the four characters but by their different points of view.

For the most part the characters are not known for being liberal nor conservative but by being pro university or not being so. While we get the impression that the Dean, Frank (Ed Altman) is more conservative than Kyle, the politics are never front and center in this play.

In the era of virtual theater, “Adjust the Procedure” is a decent play. Not without its flaws, (the story can be slow at times and the actors being remote are limited in their movements), Jake Shore does a better job writing the play than directing it. While Frank is more animated, he still struggles to be believable; Nicholas Miles Newton’s, (Ben) less is more character works better here. While it is difficult to project a true acting style on virtual theater, Megan Moses delivers a direct yet mysterious tone too her role. While “Adjust the Procedure” has some flaws, it is the best virtual piece I have seen so far.
