Morris Knolls 4x100 Relay Team Breaks 36-Year-Old School Record – and Then Does It Again a Week Later

By Steve Sears reg Palma, CJ Moore, Laron Blackwell, and Kevin Dolan weren’t about to rest. After working on improving their time in the 4X100R all season long, the boys broke a 36-year-old school record at the 49th Annual East Coast Relays at Randolph High School on Tuesday, May 24. “They crashed through the New Balance Nationals “Boys Rising Stars” competition standard and clocked a 43.62, which breaks the Morris Knolls Boys Spring Track mark set back in 1986, a 36-year-old record!” writes head coach, Dr. William Thalman, via email. “It must be noted that the original record was a hand timed 43.4, but the NFHS has a rule about how to convert to a FAT (Fully Automatic Timing) standard: you must add 0.24 to the MT (Manual Time), so the original 43.4 becomes 43.64, which is just outside our new mark.” Just two weeks later, at the NJSIAA State Group 3 Championships at Pennsauken High School Track, the quartet broke their own school record. Dolan, Blackwell, Palma, and Moore placed second in the 4X100R in a time of 43.32, which is 0.3 under their old record. Therefore, they had themselves another

new school record within a week. “It must be noted that this is a record with a time that is so low, unless they themselves break it at the Meet of Champions, it’ll stand in the Morris Knolls Spring Track history records for a very long time,” Thalman says. Thalman has been on the sidelines for many years at Morris Knolls. He has coached cross-country for 18 seasons, and winter track and spring track for 22 season each. Prior to that, he coached the Den-
ville Striders PAL XC and Track, and has been teaching chemistry and physics at Morris Knolls High School for 26 years. Blackwell and Dolan, Class of 2022 graduates, are headed to college, while Morris Knolls retains Palma, Class of 2024, and Moore, Class of 2023. All four boys compete in both the indoor and outdoor track seasons. Will Palma and Moore help break another school record? That’s all up to the future 2022-2023 track and field season.
Thalman, who retired from teaching at the end of the 2022 school year has coached many kids throughout the years. He’s seen records established (and broken), plenty of meets won, and has plans to enjoy retirement to the fullest. As for Dolan, Blackwell, Palma, and Moore, they have all been named to the NJACs All-Conference Team, First Team, National Division. In addition, Blackwell was named First Team All-Morris County.
