T h e g o a l s o f t h e c o mp e t i t i o n The objective of the comeptition: Exchange of creative ideas.

There are competitions in a lot of countries on corporate media, books, corporate design and magazine design, which take place in separated competitions. The ICMA aims to support the exchange of ideas at the international platform. This is why the call for entries is send to more than 9000 designers, custom media specialists, book publishers and magazines worldwide.

Further objectives of the competition: n Disclosing trends: The results of the competition give everyone the opportunity to classify his or her object in international comparison, and to quickly execute optimisation measures for his or her own product. n Impact outwardly: Winners report intensively on the Awards they

have won, on their websites and in print media. They thus underscore their standards of quality and at the same time get involved in their own advertising. n Think tank: Publication of the winners in the ICMA‘s Almanac and

on www.icma-award.com promote their own creativity.

What Awards are there?

There are Awards in Gold, Silver and Bronze. There are, moreover, Awards of Excellence, presented for outstanding individual performance, for example, for the cover and cover story, photo reportage, illustrations, infographics or the concept of a publication as a whole.

From which countries the submissions come from?

Traditionally, the ICMA is very well positioned in the German-speaking world. A great deal of presentations for this independent contest come from Germany, Switzerland and Austria. Within Europe, designers, inter alia, from Denmark, Finland, Belgium, Portugal, Slovakia and Hungary have taken part. Outside Europe, submissions were also received from Singapore, India, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, USA and Russia.

The certificate shows the publication that has won, the category and at the bottom the signatures of each member of the jury.

SPH Magazines, Singapore, reports on the awards that the magazines of this publisher have won at ICMA.

ICMA plays a special role in the Germanspeaking world: The results of the ICMA and other competitions are used to create an agency ranking. The number of awards is a quality criterion.

The magazine for advertising and media Horizont reports on the awards for Swiss media at the ICMA. It shows excellent work by Migros, a company that operates supermarkets.

Eines der größten Probleme von Müll im Meer ist die Haltbarkeit des Materials. Das Bundesumweltamt hat ermittelt, wie viel Zeit vergeht, bis sich unterschiedliche Materialien im Wasser zersetzen.

bleme unserer Zeit. Schon beim G7-Gipfel im Juni 2015 wurde der „Aktionsplan zur Bekämpfung von Meeresmüll“ verabschiedet. Ein Zehn-Punkte-Plan zum Meeresschutz des Bundesministeriums für wirtscha�liche Zusammenarbeit und Entwicklung (BMZ), den Minister Gerd Müller (CSU) im Mai 2016 vorstellte, beinhaltet als wichtige Aufgabe die Vermeidung der Meeresvermüllung in den Partnerländern der deutschen Entwicklungszusammenarbeit. Der Plan betrifft unterschiedliche Maßnahmen vom Schutz der Fische bis zu Warnsystemen zum Klimawandel. Gegen die Vermüllung setzt das BMZ vor allem auf Partnerscha�en mit der Wirtscha�, damit grundsätzlich weniger Müll produziert wird – und davon möglichst wenig ins Meer gelangt.

Die globale Vermüllung hat weitreichende Folgen für Ökosysteme, Artenvielfalt, Wirtscha�, Nahrungsversorgung und Gesundheit der Menschen. Die weltweite Ausbreitung des Meeresmülls macht eine Reinigung unmöglich. Dies liegt auch daran, dass 90 Prozent des Meeresmülls kleiner als einen Zentimeter sind und sich überwiegend in tieferen Meeresschichten oder auf dem Meeresgrund befinden. Das bedeutet, dass Meere nicht gereinigt werden können, ohne gleichzeitig das Ökosystem Meer zu (zer)stören. Um trotzdem gegen Meeresmüll vorzugehen, muss bei den Ursachen angesetzt werden, also vor allem beim Eintrag vom Land, dem Verhalten der Konsumenten, der Küstenbewohner und der Fischereiwirtscha�.

Für die KfW ist das bereits ein Schwerpunkt ihrer Arbeit. Ein Beispiel für eine intensive Kooperation ist Tunesien. Der Geschä�sbereich KfW Entwicklungsbank unterstützt im Au�rag der Bundesregierung den Staat am Mittelmeer schon seit 15 Jahren beim Aufbau einer umweltverträglichen Abfallwirtscha�.

Um den Schutz von Küsten und Meeren langfristig zu garantieren, bedarf es des Zusammenwirkens politischer, wirtscha�licher und privater Akteure.

Plastikmüll gefährdet das Ökosystem der Ozeane. Dr. Ralph Kadel, Naturschutzexperte der KfW Entwicklungsbank, nennt Lösungen.

ährlich werden auf der Welt etwa 311 Millionen Tonnen Plastik produziert. Seit Jahren findet ein großer Teil davon seinen Weg in die Weltmeere, mit teilweise verheerenden ökologischen und ökonomischen Folgen. Im Pazifi schen Ozean schwimmt ein Müllteppich von der Größe Mitteleuropas. Geschätzte 100 Millionen Tonnen Abfall befinden sich insgesamt in den Weltmeeren, jährlich kommen weitere 6,5 Millionen Tonnen hinzu. Der Müll besteht zu 75 Prozent aus Plastik.

Sehen kann man den Müllteppich in der Regel jedoch kaum, da er überwiegend aus Kleinstpartikeln besteht, die unterhalb der Wasseroberfläche schwimmen.

Mehr als 80 Prozent des „Meeresmülls“ gelangen vom Land aus über Flüsse oder Abwasserkanäle ins Meer.

Das größte Problem verursachen Verpackungen, Plastikflaschen und Plastiktüten, deren Abbau mehr als 400 Jahre dauern kann. In fast 700 verschiedenen Arten von Meeresbewohnern, vom Zooplankton bis zu Walen, wurden bereits Plastikteile gefunden. Die Tiere verwechseln Müll mit Nahrung. Dies ist besonders gefährlich für Meeresschildkröten, deren Magen, einmal mit Plastik gefüllt, keine Nahrung mehr aufnehmen kann – die Tiere verhungern.

Insgesamt findet man dem UN-Umweltprogramm UNEP zufolge in 90 Prozent der Meeresvögel Plastikteile. 1960 waren es fünf Prozent. Angelschnüre und geschätzt 10.000 Netze, die der

Fischerei jährlich verlorengehen, stellen eine tödliche Bedrohung dar. Häufig verfangen sich Tiere darin und strangulieren sich. Eine Million Seevögel verendet jährlich an den Folgen der Meeresvermüllung. Allein in der Beringsee sterben etwa 40.000 Seehunde im Jahr den Plastiktod. Auch die für das Meer wichtigen Korallenriffe sind betroffen: Auf den Meeresgrund gesunkene Abfälle stören das Gleichgewicht und können das Absterben der Korallen herbeiführen. Das hat verheerende Folgen, da die Riffe Refugien und Aufzuchtgebiete für viele Fischarten darstellen.

Neben den gravierenden Schäden für die Umwelt sind auch die finanziellen Folgen immens: Das UN-Umweltprogramm schätzt, dass jährlich 13 Milliarden Euro aufgewendet werden müssen, um die Folgen der Meeresvermüllung zu bekämpfen. Die Schäden sind sehr vielfältig: Kühlwasser- und Filteranlagen von thermischen Kra�werken und Entsalzungsanlagen müssen aufwendig gereinigt werden. Auch der Tourismus wird durch die Verschmutzung der Küsten und Strände negativ beeinflusst. In der Fischerei entstehen Schäden insbesondere durch verunreinigte Fänge. In Entwicklungs- und Schwellenländern leiden die Fischer unter den Folgen, da die Verschmutzung erhebliche Einkommenseinbußen mit sich bringt.

WER HAT’S ERFUNDEN? bioniscHe radnabe

welcHe FunKtion Hat eine radnabe?

Bionische Diät Leichte und gleichzeitig stabile Strukturen finden sich vor allem in der Natur. Sie dient in der Bionik als Vorbild für modernste Technik.

Nach diesem Prinzip hat GF Automotive eine neuartige Lkw-Radnabe entwickelt, die Leichtigkeit und Stabilität miteinander vereint.

T

rotz seiner tonnenschweren, ausladenden äste hält ein Baum stärksten Stürmen oder der Last grosser Schneemassen stand. Der Grund dafür sind die natürlich gewachsenen Strukturen.

Sie verteilen Belastungen gleichmässig. Wo die Last stärker drückt, wachsen zusätzliche Verstärkungen. Bionik heisst das Prinzip, bei dem Ingenieure versuchen, solche natürlichen Strukturen auf moderne Technik zu übertragen.

GF Automotive lässt sich als Bionik-Spezialistin regelmässig von der Natur inspirieren. Ein Beispiel dafür ist die neuartige bionische Radnabe für Nutzfahrzeuge.

Sie verbindet die Felge eines Rades mit der Achse des Fahrzeugs und wird dort während der Fahrt durch Vertikal-, Seiten- und Bremskräfte besonders beansprucht.

Normalerweise wird sie deshalb als massives Teil aus Eisenguss gefertigt. Normalerweise. Doch was, wenn eine leichtere Struktur die gleiche Stabilität gewährleisten kann?

Für die Nutzfahrzeugindustrie und ihre Kunden bedeutet das einen enormen Vorteil: Denn je leichter ein Lkw ist, desto mehr Nutzlast kann er transportieren und desto weniger Kraftstoff verbraucht er. Jedes Kilo weniger spart Spediteuren also bares Geld.

Leicht dank Software Vor diesem Hintergrund hat GF Automotive in einer Designstudie die neue Lkw-Radnabe aus Sphäroguss GJS 600 entwickelt. Dank spezieller Durchbrüche und äusserer Querrippen ist sie deutlich leichter. „Es ist uns gelungen, das Gewicht der Vorgänger-Radnabe um 4,8 auf 33,3 Kilogramm zu reduzieren. Das ist eine Einsparung von rund 13 Prozent“, berichtet Dominik Mahnig, Leiter Produktmanagement und Entwicklung im Bereich Chassis bei GF Automotive in Schaffhausen, Schweiz.

Die Herausforderung war, die hohe Stabilität der Radnabe bei einem geringeren Materialeinsatz zu erhalten – und das zu möglichst geringen Kosten. Dazu nutzte das Team um Dominik Mahnig Computerprogramme, die

Die Radnabe ist der innere Teil eines Rades in einem Kraftfahrzeug. Sie verbindet die Felge mit der Achse. Die Radnabe überträgt die Antriebskräfte auf das Rad. Zusätzlich wirken auf das Bauteil starke Vertikal­, Sei­ ten­ und Bremskräfte, die zum Beispiel beim Durchfahren enger Kurven entstehen. Je nach Art der Achse, ob Lenk­, Trieb­ oder Zusatzachse, gibt es unterschiedliche Nabenformen. GF Automotive stellt bereits seit den 1920er­Jahren Radnaben aus Gusseisen für den Nutzfahrzeugbau her.

Der Nabenflansch wird nach dem Guss ma­ schinell nachbearbeitet und stellt die Verbindung zur Radfelge her.

die Form des Gussteils nach bionischen Kriterien optimieren. So konnte schnell berechnet werden, wo Material eingespart werden kann, ohne die Stabilität zu beeinflussen. In mehreren iterativen Durchgängen entstand so eine Form mit organisch anmutenden Löchern, Durchbrüchen und Verrippungen. „Die Natur braucht Hunderte von Jahren, um ihre Formen zu optimieren. Wir machen das am Computer in kürzester Zeit“, erklärt der Leiter Produktmanagement und Entwicklung.

Auf dem neuesten Stand der Technik Neben der Gewichtsreduktion, die pro Lkw insgesamt bis zu 50 Kilogramm ausmachen kann, bietet die bionische Radnabe einen weiteren Vorteil. „Die Durchbrüche und Kanäle verbessern die Luftzirkulation und unterstützen so die Kühlung der Bremsen“, weiss Mahnig.

Bislang existiert die Innovation nur als Prototyp, den GF Automotive auf Ausstellungen und Messen präsentiert. „Die Produktneuheit ist ein echter Eyecatcher, mit dem wir beweisen, dass GF Automotive den neuesten Stand der Technik definieren kann“, sagt Dominik Mahnig stolz. Ein Kunde hat bereits Interesse gezeigt und prüft gerade den Einsatz der Radnabe. Entscheidet er sich für das Hightech-Bauteil, wird es am Computer an das jeweilige Nutzfahrzeugmodell angepasst. „Dann können die Formen und Durchbrüche wieder ganz anders aussehen“, so Mahnig.

Die Natur dient aber in jedem Fall als Vorbild. ■

Hochfestes Gusseisen mit Kugelgraphit vom Typ GJS 600 ist das perfekte Material für eine Lkw­Rad­ nabe. Es ist auch bei hohen Temperaturen sehr stabil und darüber hinaus leicht im Sandgussverfahren zu giessen.

Durchbrüche

Dominik Mahnig ist direkt nach seinem Studium im Jahr 1995 bei GF Automotive eingestiegen und hat dort seither in verschiedenen Berei­ chen der Produktentwicklung gearbeitet.
