Why should I take part in this competition?

In the magazine “Page” there was the following quote from a designer about this: “We have been in agreement for some years that there is no cheaper advertising than participation in design competitions.

How much more would we have to spend without this simple method in order to attract attention! And what’s nicer than the accolade of colleagues?”

The objective of the comeptition: Exchange of creative ideas.

There are competitions in a lot of countries on corporate media, books, corporate design and magazine design, which take place in separated competitions. The ICMA aims to support the exchange of ideas at the international platform. This is why the call for en-tries is send to more than 9000 designers, custom media specialists, book publishers and magazines worldwide.

Further objectives of the competition:  Disclosing trends: The results of the competition give everyone the opportunity to classify his or her object in international comparison, and to quickly execute optimisation measures for his or her own product.  Impact outwardly: Winners report intensively on the Awards they have won, on their websites and in print media. They thus underscore their standards of quality and at the same time get involved in their own advertising.  Think tank: Publication of the winners in the ICMA‘s Almanac and on www.icma-award.com promote their own creativity.

From which countries the submissions come from?

Traditionally, the ICMA is very well positioned in the German-speaking world. A great deal of presentations for this independent contest come from Germany, Switzerland and Austria. Within Europe, designers, inter alia, from Denmark, Finland, Belgium, Portugal, Slovakia and Hungary have taken part. Outside Europe, submissions were also received from Singapore, India, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, USA and Russia.

The certificate shows the publication that has won, the category and at the bottom the signatures of each member of the jury.

Der medizinischwissenschaftliche Blick

Eine illustrierte Geschichte der Alkoholfrage, der schweizerischen Alkoholpolitik und der Eidgenössischen Alkoholverwaltung (1887–2015)

In der zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts wurde der Alkoholkonsum zusehends auch zu einem Gegenstand der medizinischen Forschung. Ärzte, Physiologen und Psychiater beschäftigten sich mit den körperlichen und psychischen Folgen des Alkoholkonsums und deuteten diesen von einem «Laster» in eine «Krankheit» um.

Die Veränderungen des Trinkverhaltens im Zuge der Industrialisierung und ein wachsendes Interesse der medizinischen Wissenschaften am Alkohol und seinen Wirkungen führten im ausgehenden 19. Jahrhundert zu einer neuen Sicht auf den Alkoholkonsum. Wurde dieser bisher vor allem als «Laster» oder «Sünde» betrachtet, die man mit einem Mangel an Willenskraft oder religiöser Demut der Betroffenen erklärte, so wurde diese moralisch-religiöse Deutung nun zunehmend durch medizinische und wissenschaftliche Erklärungsmuster überlagert. In der Geschichtsschreibung spricht man von einer Medikalisierung und Pathologisierung des übermässigen Konsums von Alkohol. In dieser Lesart wurde der exzessive Alkoholkonsum nun kaum mehr als eine «Krankheit des Willens» gedeutet, sondern mit den Konzepten der Abhängigkeit und der Sucht erfasst.1

verwissenschaftlichten Blicks auf den Alkohol, forderte beispielsweise, den Alkoholiker nicht mehr als «Sünder» zu betrachten, «den man mit Bekehrung zu Gott retten» müsse. Weil «Alkoholismus, soziale Frage, Strafrecht und Wissenschaft durch intime Fäden untrennbar» zusammenhingen, müssten auch entsprechende Massnahmen ergriffen werden, verlangte Forel.2 So wurden Alkoholiker nun ebenso zum Objekt der Medizinund Sozialwissenschaften wie der rechtlichen Regulierung und Disziplinierung.

Alkohol als Arznei oder Gift?

Diese Sicht der Dinge war um die Jahrhundertwende zwar schon weit verbreitet, aber immer noch relativ neu und damit auch umstritten.

Ironischerweise war es gerade die Medizin, welche die chemischen Wirkstoffe des Alkohols seit Jahrhunderten als Arznei- und Heilmittel genutzt hatte und immer noch auf die in vielen Lehrbüchern festgehaltene Formel vertraute, dass der Alkohol in kleinen Dosen die organischen Funktionen anrege, in grösseren hingegen lähmend auf sie einwirke. Alkoholhaltige Arzneien wurden eingesetzt, um die Herzfrequenz oder die Atmung zu beschleunigen, aber auch um Fieberanfälle abschwellen zu lassen oder um als Betäubungsmittel beruhigend auf den Körper der Patienten einzuwirken.3 Belebung oder Narkotisierung war in der medizinischen Praxis lange eine Frage der Dosierung.

Es war indessen weniger diese Gebrauchsform Auf der Seite Bunges zog auch Auguste Forel in des Alkohols, welche die Sorge vieler Mediziner den «Ausrottungskrieg», den er dem Alkohol zu schürte, als vielmehr die Art und Weise, wie Alko- Beginn der 1890er-Jahre erklärte. Forel wollte hol als Genussmittel einverleibt wurde. Damit den Alkohol «gänzlich ins chemische Laboratogerieten nicht nur die individuellen Auswirkun- rium» verbannen, «wo er, wie das Morphium, das gen des Alkoholkonsums in den «ärztlichen Opium, das Kokain, der Haschisch und wie die Blick», sondern auch die sozialen, wirtschaftlichen und volksgesundheitlichen Folgen.4 Dementsprechend scharf unterschieden die mit der aufkommenden Abstinenzbewegung sympathisierenden Ärzte den Alkohol als Arzneimittel vom Alkohol als Genussmittel.

So meinte etwa Gustav von Bunge, Professor für physiologische Chemie in Basel, dass der Alkohol als Genussmittel eine «chronische, endemische Narkose und Verfuselung» der Gesellschaft bewirke und deshalb als «mächtigster Hemmschuh beim sittlichen Fortschritt der Menschheit» zu betrachten sei. Gleichzeitig räumte Bunge ein, dass der Nutzen des Alkohols als Arzneimittel aufgrund seiner «lähmenden Wirkungen» nicht zu entbehren sei, da er sich in diesem Verwendungsbereich als «das mildeste Anästhetikum» erweise.5 Dessen ungeachtet hielt Bunge daran fest, dass selbst kleinste Dosen Alkohol für den menschlichen Körper schädlich seien. Er setzte sich deshalb sowohl für eine Eingrenzung des Alkohols im Bereich der medizinischen Arzneimittel als auch für eine totale Enthaltsamkeit im gesellschaftlichen Leben ein.

Gifte alle heissen mögen», auch hingehöre.6 Weil die schädlichen Wirkungen des Alkohols nach einer «Entartung der Körpergewebe» auch eine «Entartung des Gehirns» und «der Nachkommenschaft» zur Folge habe, betrachtete ihn Forel als den «allerschlimmsten Feind der Zukunft des Menschengeschlechts».7 Im Zusammenhang mit der aufkommenden Eugenik wurde der Alkoholkonsum nun oft auch als vererbbare Krankheit betrachtet.8

Die Dämonisierung des Alkoholkonsums stand in einem engen Zusammenhang mit den unsicheren Zukunftsperspektiven, welche sich am Fin de Siècle in breiten Kreisen der Gesellschaft

emphasise the academic approach. The book is laid out with a wealth of white space. There are titles, interlines and sidebars in different colours. These access points again and again stimulate the reader to read.

The volume entitled „Lexikon der Phantominseln“ („Lexicon of Phantom Islands“) fits well into the list of this publisher’s publications. The flap text states: „Again and again islands that have never really existed have appeared on maps of the world’s oceans. Featured here are thirty of the best-known islands that never were.“ The maps are coloured light-blue, titles and initial letters likewise.

The book “Tod einer Königin” (“Death of a Queen”) is subtitled “Why do bees die as flies do?” The book is somewhat larger than DIN A4 and has a soft cover. It is the combination of texts and infographics that makes this volume so informative.
