After rain forced the postponement of the original date the previous week, the evening proved a great success, attracting families and residents to enjoy an evening of entertainment along the Karuah River.

Karuah Progress Association (KPA) Secretary Marion Brown said the event was "bigger and better than ever”.

“Thanks to Port Stephens Council, Kate Washington MP, Karuah RSL and all the businesses and community for their support to make the event a success,” she said.

Shuttle bus trial starts Christmas Eve

By Jacie WHITFIELD A FREE shuttle bus service will operate in Shoal Bay and around the Tomaree Headland over the Christmas holidays, offering locals and visitors a convenient way to travel during the busiest time of the year.

Running daily from 24 December to 6 January, excluding Christmas Day, the shuttle will operate between 9.00am and 4.00pm as part of a Council-backed trial aimed at easing traffic congestion and parking pressures in the popular coastal destination.

The initiative was originally proposed by the Tomaree Headland Heritage Group Inc and has been strongly supported by Port Stephens Councillors Mark Watson and Ros Armstrong, before receiving unanimous backing from Port Stephens Council.

Funding for the free service will come from paid parking fees collected in Shoal Bay. Council says visitation to Shoal Bay and the Tomaree Headland continues to grow year-on-year, with peak holiday periods placing strain on local roads and parking infrastructure.

During last summer alone, tens of thousands of visitors were recorded in the area, contributing to congestion and delayed travel times.

The introduction of the 27-kilometre Tomaree Coastal Walk, stretching from Tomaree Headland to Birubi, has further increased visitation, with walkers, day-trippers and tourists drawn to the region’s natural beauty and coastal experiences.

President of the Tomaree Headland Heritage Group Inc, Peter Clough, said data collected through the group’s holiday ‘Help Desks’ played a significant role in shaping the proposal.

“Data collected from our holiday Help Desks has substantially contributed to this initiative,” Mr Clough said.

“The shuttle bus trial aims to streamline travel, reduce parking issues, lower the number of cars on the road and create a more enjoyable experience for both visitors and residents during the peak holiday period.”

The shuttle will operate on a continuous loop linking key locations, including Shoal Bay and the Tomaree Headland, allowing visitors to park once and travel easily between destinations without adding to congestion.

Council hopes the trial will encourage people to leave their cars behind, reduce traffic bottlenecks and improve safety and accessibility across the area during the busy festive season.

If successful, the shuttle bus could provide a model for managing peakseason visitation in other high-demand areas across Port Stephens in the future.

of the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to leading property data specialist Cotality, the region’s postCOVID acceleration has outpaced Greater Sydney (38.9 percent) and the national average (50.4 percent) over the past six years.

House values have been the strongest performer, climbing 76.1 percent, while units rose 61 percent since December 2019.

Over the past 20 years, dwelling values have risen 116.2 percent, with houses up a whopping 138.4 percent.

Units, by contrast, have recorded softer long-term growth of 43.2 percent.

Even so, the region’s overall trajectory places it among the state’s most resilient lifestyle-driven markets.

The latest data from Cotality, which analysed property markets from Port Stephens up to Coffs Harbour, shows how property values just north of Newcastle have compared well with other North Coast locations.

Elsewhere, the Nambucca Valley saw dwelling values rise by 72.7 percent over the same period, while Port Macquarie recorded a 59.9 percent rise, just ahead of Coffs Harbour (57 percent).

Cotality executive research director Tim Lawless said Port Stephens’ uplift mirrored a

statewide regional trend.

“Regional NSW has shown an extremely strong growth trend since 2019, rising 61 percent,” he said.

“Nearly half of the 20-year growth in regional NSW has occurred in just the past six years.”

Mr Lawless said a population shift, mainly for lifestyle and affordability reasons, had played a critical role.

“Internal migration and the normalisation of hybrid working have provided a substantial demand-side boost,” he said.

“These areas started from a relatively low price base in 2019, amplifying the rate of growth.”

The region’s affordability gap with Sydney has also narrowed.

“Sydney’s premium over regional NSW has dropped from 86 percent to 59 percent since 2019.

“This reflects a significant shift in demand toward regional lifestyle markets.”

Market conditions have now returned to a more sustainable pace, with annual dwelling value increases across the examined LGAs – from Port Stephens up to Coffs Harbour – between 4.7 and 6.4 percent.

This is well down from the pandemic highs, when the peak annual growth rate ranged from 29.5 percent to 39.9 percent.

“They have done a lot of rescues up the Karuah river, as well as an enormous area covering Port Stephens, Tilligerry Creek, and surrounding connected coastal and inland waters,” Marion said.

“The service is still looking out for more volunteers.”

The KPA hosted a “monster” raffle, offering prizes valued between $10 and $1,000, before the event concluded, just in time for the Christmas lights around town to start flickering on for the drive home.

MEDOWIE Christian School students have brought the Christmas spirit to the community a little earlier this year, warming hearts and brightening days with performances at two local aged care facilities.

The school’s talented choir and dance group visited residents at Raymond Terrace Opal Gardens and Hawks Nest Peter Sinclair RSL Lifecare Nursing Homes, delivering a heartfelt celebration of music, movement, and connection.

The students arrived full of energy and excitement, ready to share the joy of Christmas through a mix of traditional carols and lively dance routines.

Their performances were met with beaming smiles, enthusiastic applause, and even a few tears of happiness.

Many residents joined in by singing along, clapping to the rhythm, and some even rose from their chairs to dance with the children - moments that quickly became treasured memories for everyone present.

For the residents, this annual visit is more than entertainment; it’s a cherished tradition.

Staff at both facilities said the students’ presence lifts spirits and brings a renewed sense of celebration, especially for those who may not have family nearby during the festive season.

The simple act of children sharing their

time and talents creates an atmosphere of warmth and community that lingers long after the final song.

The students themselves were deeply moved by the experience.

“I loved making the elderly people happy,” shared Gemma, still smiling after the performance.

Olivia agreed, reflecting, “We got to make their day special.”

For Millie, the emotional connection left a lasting impression.

“My favourite part was seeing some residents cry because they had so much joy from our singing.”

As Christmas approaches, Medowie Christian School’s young performers have proven that the true spirit of the season shines brightest when shared with others, one song, smile, and heartfelt moment at a time.

Delivering joy in time for Christmas A SPARKLE of Christmas joy has rolled into the life of Anna Bay resident Adelaine, who has been gifted a brand-new Charger Top Gun Avenger mobility scooter thanks to the Soldiers Point Lions Club, in conjunction with the Lions NSW-ACT Sight and Health Foundation Ltd. The much-needed scooter will allow Adelaine to move independently around her community, helping to ease the isolation she has experienced due to a lack of suitable transport and limited mobility.

Adelaine’s situation was brought to the attention of the Soldiers Point Lions Club earlier this year by Wesley Mission.

After learning about the daily challenges she faced, club members agreed that providing a specially designed mobility scooter would be a practical and meaningful way to support her health, wellbeing and independence.

President of the rejuvenated Soldiers Point Lions Club, James Enraght-Mooney, said the scooter would open up new opportunities for Adelaine to stay socially connected.

Port Stephens powers through six years of property growth

PORT Stephens’ surge of 73.6 percent property price growth since the start of the pandemic doesn’t surprise local agents who say the region simply made up lost ground and then exceeded expectations.

Nelson Bay Real Estate managing director Heath Jones said the Bay had been undervalued for years, partly because of how people accessed the region.

“For a long time, we had some ground to make up,” he said.

“The Bay struggled because it’s not a drive-thru town, it’s a drive-in town. But now that’s actually working in our favour.”

Jones said bypasses up and down the North Coast had changed how buyers viewed regional destinations.

“More and more towns are drive-in locations now. And here we are – closer to Sydney, and in a beautiful location.

“Newcastle is probably the only thing that compares. If you're trying to get away from the city, they won’t achieve that, but Port Stephens will.”

Pandemic flipped expectations Mr Jones said the early pandemic years defied the grim forecast.

“At the time it was all doom and gloom.

But it was the complete opposite,” he said.

“COVID forced new technology into the industry. We were suddenly running virtual tours, 360-degree walk-throughs, punching them out constantly because demand was so strong.”

River Realty’s Tom Woods described the period the same way.

“The market after COVID brought a lot of vibrance to coastal areas,” he said.

“People could work from home, keep their Sydney income and relocate for a better lifestyle. And people really did want a change.”

With supply tight and demand intense, buyers acted fast.

“I sold five or six properties sight unseen,” he said. “Anywhere from $800,000 up to $2.4 million.”

“A lot of Newcastle people are moving a bit further north for lifestyle reasons, commuting back four days a week,” he said.

“And we get rural folk from Western NSW looking to retire here.”

Fear of missing out set the tone.

“Stock was light but buyer demand was high right across Port Stephens and the Hunter.”

Unpredictable, but healthier The heat of 2021-23 has eased and the current market is far more uneven across different suburbs.

Mr Jones said stock levels were no longer at crisis lows, though some homes still linger.

“It’s not as hot as during the pandemic,” he said.

“The fight for property and the quick acceleration isn’t there anymore. There are houses that have been on the market for six or 12 months.”

But the erratic nature of the market means standout sales still occur.

“We sold a house at Salamander Bay last year for $975,000,” he said.

“The owner replaced one door and painted the letterbox – hardly spent anything. We’ve just sold it for $1.3 million.”

Mr Woods said his own year reflects the shift to a more fluid market.

“I’m about to hit 50 sales for the last 12 months. This has been my best year ever.”

“But the start of the year was slow. In the first six months we might have done 16 sales.

In the last three or four months, my team has done 30.”

And while Tim Lawless from Cotality notes growth rates have now settled between 4.7 and 6.4 percent, Mr Woods argues this is a more comfortable environment for everyone.

“An unbalanced market becomes uncomfortable for both buyers and sellers,” he said. “This is a better market.”

Sydney buyers Sydney remains a major driver of demand and has become even more influential as the city’s prices continue to climb.

Ben George, who runs Aspect Port Stephens Real Estate, said half his buyers now come from Sydney.

“When the Sydney market performs reasonably well, people see the opportunity up here,” he said.

“You can improve your lifestyle and do it for half the price.”

Mr Jones sees a similar pattern.

“It’s about 50-50 between locals and people coming from Western Sydney and the North Shore,” he said.

Mr Woods said Newcastle and Western NSW are increasingly important.

Hot spots and price bands Across the LGA, the action centres on midrange homes, waterfront prestige, as well as older beach shacks.

“In Nelson Bay and Salamander, anything from $800,000 to $1.2 million is very busy,” Mr Jones said. “And certainly the cheaper stuff is moving quickly too.”

He said $1.2 million remains an important psychological ceiling for many buyers, creating a highly competitive band.

Mr Woods said premium pockets continue to deliver record results.

“Waterfront sales are very buoyant,” he said.

“We’ve done a few record sales in Tea Gardens and North Arm Cove – $2 millionplus.

“And places like Lemon Tree Passage are stepping up.

“We transacted a home at $1.91 million recently – the second-highest ever recorded there.”

Mr George said the shortage of land and the region’s geography influence the market sharply.

“Older shacks are really popular because there’s so little land left to develop,” he said.

“We’re surrounded by water or National Park. Developers and some buyers have no choice but to buy older homes, knock them down and rebuild.

“And if you’ve got one of those, chances are your buyer is coming from Sydney.”

Outlook for 2026 Agents expect the coming year to deliver consistency rather than fireworks.

Mr Jones predicts modest gains.

“If I had to have a bet, I’d put it on a moderate 0-5 percent increase,” he said.

“There’s demand for rental property, there are plenty of people looking for a home or a weekender. It should be a solid year.”

Mr Woods agrees.

“Locally, I think it’s going to be a steady market,” he said. “There’s always going to be demand for coastal property.”

Mr George shares the sentiment.

“I can’t see it going backwards,” he said.

“As long as the demand’s there - and I can’t see that changing - it should remain consistent.”

Stage two of Greenside development completed q Stage Two of the Greenside Port Stephens Seniors Living Development is now complete, with Stage Three currently being prepared.

SOLDIERS Point Bowling Club has officially completed Stage Two of its Greenside Port Stephens Seniors Living Development, delivering 52 apartments for over-55s and marking a major milestone in a project more than 20 years in the making.

The Greenside concept began in 2004 when the Club identified surplus land behind the venue and set out

to explore new, sustainable revenue streams beyond traditional hospitality and gaming.

After several early hurdles, the Club secured development approval in 2014, paving the way for Stage One’s completion in 2016 with 26 apartments.

Construction of Stage Two commenced in 2022 but was temporarily disrupted in May 2024 when the original builder,

Stevens Construction, went into liquidation.

SNL Constructions later stepped in to complete the development, enabling residents to move into their new homes on 13 November 2025.

General Manager Simon Lack, who has served at the Club for 22 years and has overseen the project since its inception, says the

HSC ‘one step, not an end point’ WITH Year 12 students having received their HSC results on Thursday 18 December, it’s an important time to remind students that final scores don’t determine long term success.

Experienced careers advisor Liza Hone said results represent one step, not an end point.

“Your result isn’t everything.

“If you really have a goal and believe you can do it, there are ways of getting there,” Ms Hone said.

She reminded students that strong results may make course entry easier but they are not the only pathway.

“I used to say medicine and law were exceptions, but even that’s not true anymore.

“I met medical students who started with scores in the 70s and still made it through alternate pathways.”

Ms Hone said academic scores lose relevance over

time.

“Once you’ve been out of school for six years, no one asks what your score was.

“It doesn’t stick with you, it’s not something you wear forever.”

The career’s advisor encourages students to view their results as part of a longer process.

Universities and employers value skills, experience, and persistence alongside academic performance.

“If you really want it, there’s almost always a way, alternate entry programs, bridging courses, or experience based applications.”

Ms Hone advised that students can use several pathways to reach their goals.

These included alternate entry programs that lead into degrees, bridging courses that meet prerequisites, and experience based applications supported by

completion of Stage Two comes at a critical time for the region.

“With the shortage of residential living in the area, these 52 apartments help meet a very real community need,” Mr Lack said.

“Retirement living like this gives people a lower-priced option to stay in the area they love and enjoy a relaxed lifestyle with no maintenance required.”

Mr Lack said the move into seniors living was originally driven by the Club’s desire to diversify its income and reduce reliance on gaming revenue.

“Back in 2004, we were looking for an alternative

revenue stream at a time when gaming legislation was creating uncertainty,” he said.

“Retirement living provided a sustainable, futurefocused option for the Club and our community.”

Mr Lack said the completion of Stage Two is particularly significant given the setbacks along the way.

“It’s been a long haul – three years for some residents, even five years for others.”

“When the builder went bankrupt, it created real uncertainty, but everyone stuck it out.

“They’re thrilled to finally

Soldiers Point Bowling Club is now preparing for Stage Three of the development, which will deliver another 36 apartments, bringing the Greenside precinct to a total of 88 seniors living units when complete.

“This region is booming with retirement living, and we’re proud to be contributing to that growth,” said Mr Lack.

“Stage Three will offer even more choice for people looking for secure, modern and community-connected living.”

Dear Jasminda, THERE are so many social events at this time of year and I often don't enjoy myself at those events, but I don't want to reject invitations.

I feel as though a lot of the conversations are just small talk and I am generally uncomfortable.

Any tips for making the evenings less painful?

By Mayor Leah ANDERSON AS I reflect on the past year, I’m proud of what we have achieved together, even with the challenges we’ve faced.

The natural disasters may feel like a distant memory for some, but the recovery work continues every day. We’ve been working closely with the State Government to secure the funding needed to repair our damaged roads.

This year, we launched the Roads Acceleration Program, investing a record amount in road upgrades and maintenance, but we know funding alone isn’t enough. That’s why we’re prioritising long-term planning and developing a Roads Futures Strategy to map out our vision for sustainable roads in Port Stephens.

Alongside roads, we’ve stayed focused on delivering more housing. This year, we doubled approvals for higher-density housing like dual occupancies (two homes on one lot). We successfully advocated for changes to the State Environmental Planning Policy (Housing) 2021, making it easier to develop affordable housing in Nelson Bay and Raymond Terrace. We've also introduced cost-saving measures for developers of affordable rental housing and are moving forward with plans for new homes on Council-owned land.

Creating vibrant town centres has been a big focus this year. We’ve endorsed the Salamander Bay Town Centre Place Plan to guide future investments, and the Medowie Town Centre Masterplan is now on public exhibition. This plan will create a central recreation hub and meeting space, improve walkability and deliver new homes close to town.

A major highlight was the opening of the new international terminal at Newcastle Airport, connecting us to exciting destinations such as Perth, Hobart, and Bali, with Singapore starting in 2026. This upgrade opens access to destinations like London, Paris, and Johannesburg, making us a gateway to the world and creating new opportunities for our local businesses.

Looking ahead to 2026, we have so much to be excited about. We’ll continue to focus on what matters most to our community - improving roads, drainage, and footpaths; delivering diverse housing; and protecting our valuable environment.

I wish you all a safe and happy holiday season, and I look forward to working with you in 2026.

Christmas under the stars: The sky that started a story

By David RENEKE, Astronomer EVERY year, as the festive season picks up speed, the night sky quietly rolls out its own holiday display- no tinsel, no blinking bulbs, just a crisp dome of stars performing the same cosmic pageant they’ve been staging for thousands of years.

And woven into that ancient canvas is a tale as old as Christmas itself: the mystery of the so-called Christmas Star.

It’s easy to imagine that long-ago night, clear, cool, and still, with the kind of silence only the desert can manage.

To the east, the familiar constellations of winter marched upward: Orion with his unmistakable belt, Taurus the Bull following close behind, and the pale shimmer of the Pleiades, a cluster so distinctive even non-astronomers can spot it in a heartbeat.

It was a sky suited for wonder.

A sky perfect for a story.

But was there truly a special star?

Something bright enough, strange enough, to send travellers on a journey?

That’s where astronomy steps in, not to spoil the magic, but to show that the universe itself may have provided something extraordinary.

Historians and astronomers have been investigating this puzzle for centuries, and the contenders are more interesting than you might expect.

One idea points to a brilliant planetary conjunction, the meeting of Jupiter and Saturn in 7 BC and again in 2BC. The two brightest planets huddled so closely together that, to the naked eye, they would have appeared as a single, unusually intense point of light.

And since Jupiter was associated with kings and Saturn with older wisdom in ancient astrology, some scholars suggest the sight may have had symbolic meaning to early skywatchers.

Another possibility is a nova or supernova, a star exploding in a surge of light so dramatic it becomes briefly visible even without a telescope.

astronomers recorded such events around the right period, and it’s entirely plausible that one of those stellar outbursts lit up the western sky for weeks.

Then there’s the idea of a comet.

Halley’s Comet swept through the inner solar system around 12 BC - too early, but not impossible if later storytellers merged events into a single narrative.

Comets, with their sweeping tails, were often seen as omens.

Some good. Some… well, less festive.

Still, the idea refuses to fade because a bright comet is, undeniably, a scene-stealer.

And here’s the twist: it might not have been one single event at all, but a series of striking sights across several years. For ancient skywatchers, who monitored the heavens with a dedication modern stargazers can only admire, the sky was a messenger.

When something unusual happened, people paid attention.

Fast-forward to today.

When we step outside on a warm December night in the Southern Hemisphere, the sky is dramatically different from that old Middle Eastern canvas.

Our summer evenings are ruled by the brilliant Southern Cross, the coal-black patch of the Coalsack Nebula, and the faint smudge of the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds, two nearby galaxies visible to the naked eye.

It takes at least two people to make a conversation engaging, so it involves a bit of work on your part. If you have a general idea about the guests who will be in backyard barbecue, chances are you’ve glanced up at these silent companions without even realising how rare they are globally.

High overhead sits Canopus, the second-brightest star in the night sky, dazzling enough to turn heads even in suburban light.

To the east, Sirius rises - whiter, sharper, and bright enough to cast a faint shadow under the darkest skies.

And if you’re up before dawn, you might catch Venus, so luminous it often gets mistaken for a UFO… or something far more biblical.

So, what does all this mean for the Christmas Star?

The beauty of astronomy is that it doesn’t try to replace wonder - it expands it.

The same laws of physics that govern planets and exploding stars

attendance, you could pre-plan a few questions that go beyond surface-level conversation or big-noting. Instead of allowing people to drone on about work, you could ask about any interesting new activities the guests took up in the past year, or life-changing experiences.

Most people really appreciate a good listener and this also takes the pressure off you. You may find this is a satisfying way to engage in a meaningful conversation, rather than chatting for the sake of filling a conversational void. Another small talk avoidance tip is to pass around a plate for the host. Party hosts have so much going on, that they appreciate the offer, and it gives you a chance to meet new people, with a great excuse to keep moving when you need to, for example: 'Perry, I'd love to hear more about your plantar fasciitis, but these freshlyshucked oysters need to reach a new audience'. To yourself, you might add: 'And so do I.' Finally, make sure you have an exit plan. There's no point staying if you are uncomfortable.

Alternatively, seek out the family pet. Almost three quarters of households have one, and pets have a wonderful way of calming nerves and redirecting your focus. When the party has reached the karaoke stage, you and Misha the malamute can whine to each other.

Carpe diem, Jasminda. also allow us to retrace the sky as it looked thousands of years ago.

Whether the star was a planetary alignment, a nova, or simply a poetic way of marking a moment, the fact remains: the sky has always been part of our story.

And maybe that’s the real magic.

Long before fairy lights and plastic reindeer, before crowded shops and digital wish lists, humanity looked upward for meaning.

The night sky connected people across cultures, across deserts, across centuries. It still does.

This Christmas, when the air cools and the stars sharpen, take a moment to step outside and look up.

The universe isn’t just overhead, it’s part of the holiday tradition too, quietly shining, just as it did the night a story began.

Stinker’s Christmas fishing guide

LIKE so many, Christmas is my favourite time of the year.

Time for the family to gather and time to all sit at the same table.

This year give the turkey a break and have a fishy feast.

Before you can make that decision you need to catch the fish!

The good news is that the fishing in and around Port Stephens is on the boil.

Inside the Port, concentrate your effort on flathead, bream, whiting and crabs.

Having a boat will increase your chances.

Launch at Soldiers Point or Lemon Tree Passage and set your drop net for crabs from Lemon Tree to North Arm Cove and up towards the entrance to the Karuah River (remember witches’ hats traps are banned in Port Stephens).

Once your nets are set for crabs, drift the deeper channels or toss soft plastics on the top of the tide around the mangroves.

Don’t forget to pick up your traps before heading home.

Outside the heads the action is fierce with snapper biting like Bengal tigers.

Head south and target the bomboras off the Fingal Lighthouse or travel further south and work around the fantastic reefs off Rocky Point.

If you choose to head north from the heads, target Boondelbah Island or Broughton Island.

You may be keen to go even further north towards the great snapper reefs off Seal Rocks.

Fed by the Karuah, Myall and indirectly by the Bulahdelah river systems and numerous tributaries, the Port offers a wide range of fishing options for all ages and abilities throughout the entire year.

Feeder streams meander through thousands of hectares of mangrove forests which offer protection and ideal breeding grounds for many species of fish, prawns and crabs.

Oyster racks fringe the Port and form “artificial reefs” under which broad-shouldered, bright-eyed bream gather.

Bream are permanent residents in Port Stephens and can be found along the breakwalls, jetties and all rocky structures.

Over the extensive sea grasses and in the quiet corners, out of the wind and current, flathead lay in ambush for any unsuspecting prey.

Port Stephens is a famous dusky flathead fishery particularly during the summer months.

Trumpeter whiting gather in large schools mainly in the western half of the Port where they are keen to attack any worm or prawn bait that happens to drift by.

During the summer months the trumpeters are joined by their bigger cousins, the sand whiting, which prefer to snuffle over the sand spits and in the warm shallows of the inside beaches.

During the later winter months, schools of luderick move northwards along our rocky coastline and beaches to pour into the Port before setting up camp along all the breakwalls and under the wharves.

Don’t be surprised to hook a monster mulloway as these thumping fish lurk right throughout the system feeding in the shallows before retiring to the deep holes during the darkness.

Blue swimmer crabs start tap dancing up and down the channels during the summer months and are eagerly chased with hand lines, traps and drop nets (witches hat traps are banned in Port Stephens).

Mud crabs lumber through the mangroves and crawl into the Port.

Take care as I haven’t met a friendly one yet.

At certain times over the year the inner waters of the Port are visited by bluefin tuna, yellowtail kingfish, trevally, schools of highly excitable tailor and an increasing number of snapper.

The entrance to the Port between the headlands, Yacaaba and Tomaree, is wide and provides comfortable passage to the open waters in most conditions.

Offshore fishing from Birubi north to Broughton Island is as good as it gets.

Snapper is without doubt the most sought after fish because of its tenacious fighting qualities and outstanding performance in the kitchen.

The offshore coastal stretch to Seal Rocks, including the islands, is dominated by reef, ideal

habitat for snapper.

Mulloway cruise in healthy schools over the same reefs and are mainly chased during the warmer months.

Kingfish, morwong, teraglin and king sized leatherjacket are never far away.

Baitfish, tuna, bonito, slimy mackerel and yellow tail are always available – in most cases in the berley trail right under your boat.

The incredible number of sand flathead that snooze on the huge offshore expanses of sand continue to provide consistent results for drifters.

Rock fishing from Boat Harbor to Fingal, in the right conditions, is sensational.

Snapper are keen to rumble in a rising sea, along with black drummer, bream, leatherjacket, tailor, salmon, mulloway, kingfish, groper and luderick.

Fishing off all coastal rock ledges and headlands is dangerous and every precaution must be taken – certainly not the place for a novice or family excursion.

Wear a life jacket at all times on the rocks.

The beach fisherman is well catered for with Stockton, Fingal and Hawks Nest being the most popular.

Stockton Beach, which is 4x4 friendly with a Council permit, is a hive of activity, particularly over the summer months when whiting move into the deeper holes along with flathead and mulloway.

As conditions become cooler, schools of tailor, salmon and bream move in. Kingsley, One Mile and Fingal Beaches also load up with summer whiting and are popular as family fishing destinations.

FOLLOWING our 2 man Ambrose game earlier in the morning, we reassembled back at the RSL Sports Club for our end of year presentations and Christmas Dinner. Its been a challenging year, especially in regard to the very wet winter which caused many games to be cancelled as the course needed to be closed for major repairs and maintenance, but we got through it and we a more efficiently run club as a result.

A particularly emotional couple of events this year that resulted in the presentation of specially embroidered club shirts for John Woolly and Bob Foster, both of whom reached the age of ninety (90) this year, a truly remarkable milestone, congratulations John and Bob. END OF YEAR RESULTS: Noel Cartwright Patron Trophy: Winner, Fred Drury.

Not to be upstaged, all rounder Melicity - one of two Under 20 athletes at Medowie - captured the 18yrs Girls 100m (15.49), 200m (34.09),100m hurdles (22.67), 500g Javelin (11.62m) and long jump (3.38m) titles in a tremendous family feat.

Fifteen-year-old Indianna Sansom showed her ability by winning the 90m hurdles (20.81) and 200m (31.62) events in the 15 years girls division and snaring silver in both the 800m and high jump, plus bronze in the 100m and 400m finals.

Other Medowie athletes to shine included siblings Scarlet and Matthew Christie who collected a haul of medals in their respective age groups.

Scarlet won the 14yrs Girls 400m (1:08.50 sec) and 300m

hurdles (57.58) and picked up silver in the long jump and Triple Jump while elder brother Matthew clinched the 15yrs Boys 100m hurdles and Triple Jump (9.00m) titles and silver in the 100m and Javelin.

Nelson claimed gold in the 14yrs Boys 3000m in a time of 13:05.50 and second in javelin while the versatile Green grabbed bronze in the 13yrs Boys 100m, 1500m Racewalk, 90m hurdles and long Jump events.

Austin Marshall won the 8yrs Boys shot put (4.40m), finished second in 60m hurdles and third in 100m

Medowie athletes shine

q Medowie Little Athletics Centre’s emerging talent was on show at the recent Port Hunter Zone Athletics Championships at Mallabula Sporting Complex.

RECORD breaking sprinter Stephanie Vasic is the pride of Medowie Little Athletics Centre.

The long-time athlete was in sharp form at the recent Port Hunter Zone Athletics Championships at Mallabula Sports Complex - smashing the Girls 16 years Zone record for the 100 metres.

In a phenomenal performance, 16 year old Stephanie grabbed the gold medal in a sizzling time of 14.58 seconds to reach a magical milestone.

She showed her durability by backing up to also win the 200m (32.88) and earned silver in high jump, and bronze in shot put and long jump.

Vasic was one of 36 Medowie club athletes to compete at the Port Hunter Zone carnival with 28 qualifying for the Regional

Athletics Championships in 2026.

Multiple club records were the order of the day for the Medowie team with several of the club’s emerging prospects stamping their mark in track and field finals.

Outstanding juniors Archie Green, 13, Matthew Christie, 15, and 14-year-old dynamos Malakai Nelson and Xavien Dorin, covered themselves in glory by clinching the Senior Boys 4 x 100m Relay title to cap a memorable meet.

“We had a dominant presence in our girl entries which is a great sign of what’s to come,” beamed Medowie Athletics Centre secretary Eileen Christie.

“The girls and boys love to show up each week for training and this creates a positive environment for our athletes.

“Our entire Medowie team showed such great support and encouragement of each other, and to the other clubs, and these CONTINUED Page 12
