Smelter's future secured but cost to taxpayers unclear

By Jacob SHTEYMAN, AAP MORE than 1000 jobs at a troubled aluminium smelter are secure after the federal government confirmed it would keep the site running with taxpayer support.

Rio Tinto, majority owner of the massive Tomago smelter, had for months been threatening to shut down the plant due to spiralling energy costs after 2028, when its electricity contract runs out.

But on Friday, the government announced

it had come to an agreement with the minerals giant to keep Tomago powered with cheap renewable energy underwritten by the taxpayer.

"This is so important for our national interest," Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said as he announced the deal.

"We need to be more resilient as a national economy, and we need to make sure that we do make more things here."

The full details of the arrangements are yet to be revealed but will involve the Commonwealth entering into fixed-price power purchasing agreements

The total cost has yet to be agreed and negotiations would continue, Industry Minister Tim Ayres said.

Tomago Aluminium will contribute at least $1 billion to upgrade and maintain the facility in the next decade, including identifying opportunities to further decarbonise the smelter.

Tomago produces more than a third of Australia's aluminium and is the single largest electricity user in the nation.

Electricity makes up 40 percent of operating costs at Tomago, which began

operating in 1983 and produces up to 590,000 tonnes of aluminium a year.

The Australian Workers' Union said it was a pivotal moment for Australian manufacturing.

"For months, we've been saying that Tomago isn't just another industrial site.

It's the test case for whether Australia is serious about having a manufacturing future," AWU national secretary Paul Farrow said.

A TODDLER has tragically died after being hit by a car in Tanilba Bay. About 5.40pm on Tuesday 9 December, emergency services were called to a home on Lloyd George Grove, Tanilba Bay, following reports a child had been hit by a car.

Officers attached to Port Stephens-Hunter Police District arrived to find a one-

year-old girl had been hit by a Toyota utility on the property.

The toddler was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being taken to John Hunter Hospital in a critical condition where she later died.

The driver – a 25-yearold man – was uninjured and taken to hospital for mandatory testing.

Police have commenced an investigation into the cause of the crash.

A report will be prepared for the information of the coroner.

The announcement comes after the federal government has struck a flurry of deals to keep smelters running across the nation as rising energy costs threaten their sustainability.

In October, the federal and Queensland governments agreed on a $600 million joint support package for a copper smelter in Mt Isa. A few months earlier, the Commonwealth, South Australian and Tasmanian

governments stumped up $135 million in taxpayer funds to keep Nyrstar's lead and zinc smelters operating, with part of the funding going to expand production into critical minerals such as antimony.

Labor's decision to bail out Tomago was a clear admission it had failed to deliver cheap and reliable energy, the coalition said.

"The government cannot keep hiding the bill," Opposition Leader Sussan Ley said in a joint statement with industry spokesman Alex Hawke and energy spokesman Dan Tehan.

"They must front up and explain to Australians how much of their money is being used in failed attempts to mop up Labor's energy failures."

Long-term residents call for ‘urgent review’ of stormwater decisions FROM Page 1 plumber and drainage contractor David Monin and oyster grower Geoff Diemar have called for immediate answers over the discharging of stormwater at Fly Point Aquatic Reserve.

The location is described

by Mr Clarke, Mr Monin and Mr Diemar as “one of the most environmentally sensitive and historically significant marine habitats in New South Wales”.

Stormwater runs from drains to street gutters and then through an underground system of pipes to eventually reach our waterways.

The group is now seeking answers from Council over the long-term diversion of groundwater and stormwater from Nelson Bay housing estates toward the Port StephensGreat Lakes Marine Park.

They fear this practice may have been occurring “unchecked” for years, potentially “degrading water quality, damaging

protected habitat and undermining the ecological integrity of the Port Stephens coastline”.

They have called for “full transparency, an independent review of the decisions that allowed this to occur and urgent corrective action to stop further harm to the marine environment”.

Mr Clarke, a Fingal Bay resident and member of the Port Stephens– Great Lakes Marine Park Advisory Council, told NOTA, “Can someone explain how anyone could consider running a drain of unfiltered stormwater through an Aquatic Reserve into a Sanctuary Zone - in the middle of Port Stephens?”

Mr Monin, who has more than 50 years of plumbing and drainage experience on the Peninsula, says the issue has its roots in the early 2000s.

said.

Mr Diemar, born locally and with a lifetime of experience in the oyster industry, has expressed concern over the impacts of uncontrolled or untreated stormwater on water quality and the marine ecosystem.

Issues raised include potential impacts on marine life such as sea turtles and seahorses, and broader ecological impacts including degradation of seagrass meadows, altered foreshore hydrology, declining water clarity, and long-term stress on sanctuary-zone species.

The three concerned residents are calling for: - A fully independent inquiry into drainage approvals and environmental impacts

Transparent publication of Council’s engineering and environmental assessments - Immediate installation of appropriate pollutioncontrol infrastructure - A long-term, integrated drainage strategy for the Tomaree Peninsula.

Greg Kable, Director Facilities and Infrastructure at Port Stephens Council, told News Of The Area, “Recent upgrades to the drainage system in Nelson Bay addressed constraints in the drainage pipework along Victoria Parade, which had historically led to flooding issues during heavy rainfall, impacting both private properties and the road network.

“Improvements to the drainage system included a diversion pipeline

through Neil Carroll Park, enhancing water flow from the catchment area.

“It also included inlet pits for better stormwater capture, an emergency relief pit, and a Gross Pollutant Trap aimed at improving water quality before discharge.”

Prior to the works, Mr Kable said Council engaged a specialist environmental consultant to perform a marine habitat survey and assessment.

“The environmental assessment evaluated the risks associated with both construction and the ongoing operations and was ‘deemed to have minimal adverse impacts and are likely to contribute positively to the sustainability and conservation of the

Port Stephens marine environment’,” Mr Kable said.

“The Gross Pollutant Trap, along with the infiltration works, grass swales and rock scour protection, will ensure adequate treatment of stormwater before its discharge into the waterway.”

A Gross Pollutant Trap (GPT) is designed to intercept the flow of water and catch litter and debris.

Acting as a filter, the GPT retains litter while allowing water to flow through.

“It treats stormwater before it flows into the local waterway, improving water quality and benefiting the marine environment,” Mr Kable said.

Early start for shark spotting drones

SURF Life Saving drones will be in the air earlier and for longer this summer as the Department of Primary Industries (DPI) steps up shark surveillance.

The NSW Government has allocated an extra $2.5m for shark management following the recent deaths of a female tourist near Crowdy Bay and a local surfer on Sydney’s Northern Beaches.

Through the DPI, Surf Life Saving NSW (SLSNSW) has delivered shark surveillance across the state for nearly a decade. This year, sweeps of 33 beaches were set to start a week early, on 13 December.

The Hunter and Mid North Coast beaches to have earlier drone surveillance are Fingal Rovers, South West Rocks, Crescent Head, Town Beach Port Macquarie, Lighthouse Beach Port Macquarie, Forster, Fingal Beach, Nobbys and Redhead.

From 20 December, they will be joined

by Sawtell, Urunga, Scotts Head, Black Head, Cape Hawke, Tea Gardens Hawks Nest and Birubi Point, which are among the 50 beaches to have daily drone patrols until the end of January.

As part of the increased funding, weekend patrols will then continue at all 50 beaches until 29 March.

SLSNSW CEO Steve Pearce said, “Last summer alone, 50 locations from Tweed to Bega were covered, with drones completing 18,027 flights over 4897 flying hours.

“During that time, 815 sharks were sighted including 41 bull sharks, 45 white sharks and 729 unknown sharks.

Record demand for urgent care and surgery

THE latest Bureau of Health Information report shows increased demand for hospital care and urgent surgery across the Hunter New England Local Health District (HNELHD).

The quarterly report is based on the period between July September 2025.

There were 108,152 presentations to emergency departments (EDs) across the district, which is 2174 fewer than in the same reporting period in 2024.

However, the number of patients presenting with triage category 2 cases (emergency) and category 3 (urgent) increased by 8.4 percent (1333) and 4.2 percent (1425) respectively.

These figures are the highest since BHI began reporting in 2010.

“Our frontline staff continue to deliver safe, high-quality care during a busy period with unplanned sickness and recruitment challenges,” HNELHD Chief Executive Tracey McCosker said.

“I can’t thank them enough for their dedication and collaboration, especially during the winter cold and flu season.

“The decrease in ED presentations for triage categories 4 (semi-urgent) and 5 (nonurgent), compared with the same quarter in 2024, is a positive sign that the community is accessing

GPs or Healthdirect more regularly.

“We’re always looking at strategies to improve our facilities and patient experience.

“We continually monitor patient flow to identify those who can be safely discharged and return home as quickly as possible.”

During the quarter, 1883 urgent and 3194 semi-urgent surgeries were performed, an increase of 17.8 percent (285) and 25.8 percent (655) respectively, compared with the same quarter in 2024.

Ms McCosker said the increase in surgical activity is a result of more efficient models of care and better collaboration with facilities.

“We continue to use some of our smaller hospitals, when appropriate, to ensure patients receive the care they need, or can be safely transferred closer to home to recover.

“The demand for urgent care continues to grow, and we’re working hard to reduce all waitlists and ensure timely access to surgery.”

NSW Nurses and Midwives Association General Secretary Shaye Candish, said the data demonstrates nurses and midwives are working increasingly harder with limited resources.

needed.

“The BHI data shows there are still almost 95,000 patients on the elective surgery waitlist.

“In order to bring these down permanently, we must see the federal government contribute more funding to the states - they can’t do it alone.”

Council endorses Roads Futures Strategy PORT Stephens Council has unanimously endorsed the development of a Roads Futures Strategy to “strengthen long-term

planning and deliver more resilient and sustainable local roads”.

The Strategy will outline Council’s long-term vision

to support population growth, improve safety and strengthen sustainability of local roads across Port Stephens.

Port Stephens Council manages a road network of approximately 800km.

Council admits it has a growing backlog of roadworks caused by “years of limited funding, rising construction costs, and repeated damage from severe weather events”.

Port Stephens Mayor Leah Anderson said, “Our community has been clear in calling for better longterm planning on our roads, and that’s exactly what this strategy will deliver.

“We're investing a record amount of funding into road upgrades and maintenance through our Roads Acceleration Program (RAP), but we know funding alone isn’t enough.”

“Council uses a number of methods and funding approaches for the rehabilitation and resealing of roads, now is the time for a comprehensive networkwide review,” he said.

“This Strategy is a pivotal step in ensuring our road management is efficient, transparent and aligned with community expectations.”

This week, Council commenced a pothole trial to help identify longer lasting repair options, with results feeding into the Roads Futures Strategy.

PORT Stephens Council is implementing measures to support a better experience for locals and visitors at Birubi Point during the busy summer holiday period.

Four youths charged after alleged pursuit THREE teens and a child have been charged after an alleged highway pursuit.

About 6.50am on Tuesday 9 December 2025, officers attached to PortStephens Hunter Police District attempted to stop a vehicle on the Pacific Highway, Heatherbrae.

When the vehicle allegedly failed to stop as directed, a pursuit was initiated.

The vehicle allegedly continued towards Karuah where road spikes were deployed, however the pursuit was terminated due to safety concerns.

A short time later officers attached to Operation Soteria observed the vehicle travelling north along the Pacific Highway, Tea Gardens.

Police will allege the vehicle crashed into a median strip before stopping near Nabiac.

The vehicle then allegedly conducted a U-turn and crashed into two marked police vehicles.

The vehicle continued travelling northbound before road spikes were successfully deployed and the vehicle stopped after crashing into a road sign.

Four occupants allegedly ran from the scene, however were arrested a short distance away.

They were taken to Taree Police Station where the driver – a 15-year-old boy – was charged with “police pursuit – not stop – drive dangerously” and “drive conveyance taken without consent of owner”.

He was refused bail and appeared at Parramatta Bail Division Court on Tuesday 9 December, where he was granted bail to appear before a children’s court on Tuesday 16 December.

The passengers – aged 11, 13 and 14 - were charged with “be carried in conveyance taken without consent of owner”.

The 13-year-old boy was refused bail and appeared before Parramatta Bail Division Court on Tuesday 9 December, where he was formally granted conditional bail to appear before a children’s court on Thursday 11 December 2025.

The 14-year-old boy was refused bail and appeared before Parramatta Bail Division Court on Tuesday 9 December, where he was formally granted bail to appear before a children’s court on Monday 2 March 2026.

Tributes flow for firefighter TRIBUTES have flowed for John Lohan, 59, the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Services (NPWS) firefighter who lost his life protecting the townships of Bulahdelah and Nerong.

In a statement to social media, the NPWS said Mr Lohan was a “treasured and long-serving staff member” who was based at the service’s Lake Munmorah depot for almost 30 years.

“John was an experienced firefighter who was deployed to fires across the state and was working as a Divisional Commander,” the NPWS said.

“He lost his life while undertaking a critical leadership role on the fireground, ensuring the safety of his firefighters and the community.”

MidCoast Council Mayor Claire Pontin honoured Mr Lohan’s sacrifice during council’s 10 December

meeting.

“I want to start by acknowledging the tragic death of the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Services firefighter who lost his life on Sunday while working on the backburning operation for the Bulahdelah fires,” she said.

“The man was a veteran field officer and experienced firefighter who began his career with the NSW National Parks & Wildlife Services in 1996.”

MARINE Rescue NSW volunteers across the state returned 823 people safely to shore during November, completing more than 370

search and rescue missions including 108 emergency responses.

TRANSPORT for NSW is encouraging motorists travelling on the Pacific Highway through Hexham to plan their trip and allow extra travel time during the Christmas New Year period, with high traffic volumes and delays expected.

The M1 Pacific Motorway at Beresfield and the Pacific Highway at Hexham are linked via John Renshaw Drive and the New England Highway, forming a major north-south route.

As a known pinch point, the busiest days for northbound traffic are predicted to be Saturday 27 and Sunday 28 December, with expected delays of up to 30 minutes.

Southbound traffic is predicted to be heavy on Friday 2, 9 and 16 January with expected delays of up to 45 minutes.

Significant improvements have been made on the M1 Pacific Motorway and New

England Highway since last summer, with noticeable changes in traffic flow.

However, speed limits remain reduced over the holiday period, even when work is paused for motorist safety.

Conditions may include narrow lanes, changed lane merges and altered traffic configurations.

Work on the Hexham Straight Widening, M1 Pacific Motorway to Raymond Terrace, and Rankin Park to Jesmond projects will pause from Friday 19 December 2025 and resume Monday 5 January 2026.

NSW Police will enforce double demerit points for speeding, motorcycle helmet, seatbelt and mobile phone offences from Wednesday 24 December 2025 to Sunday 4 January 2026.

Logging On ensures our skilled volunteers can monitor a boater’s safe return, and if they go overdue, a search will be initiated,” Acting Commissioner Andrews said.

Push to fund shark bite kits

THREE surfers and shark attack survivors are leading the call for the roll out of lifesaving emergency response kits on beaches across Australia.

One year after creating Community Shark Bite Kits, founder Danny Schouten has deployed more than 150 kits on beaches across NSW, Queensland, South Australia and Western Australia.

“We’re not going to stop doing what we love, so we just have to be better prepared,” he said.

“When a shark attack happens, every second counts.”

The importance of the

kits was evident following the recent death of a Swiss woman and the mauling of her partner, while swimming off Kylies Beach in Crowdy Bay National Park.

The man was saved by a passer-by who applied a makeshift tourniquet.

Permanent kits were about to be installed on the beach.

“A Shark Bite Kit provides tools that can help control bleeding and hopefully increase someone’s chance of survival,” Danny said.

“With the support of communities and donors, we can get Shark Bite Kits on every beach around the country.

“It’s about Australian

beaches being well-prepared for when these attacks happen and making our coastline a safer place for everyone.”

Danny’s surfer friends and shark attack survivors Toby Begg and Kai McKenzie, whose traumatic experiences on Port Macquarie beaches last year inspired the kits, are supporting his campaign.

“Shark Bite Kits are important because they have the potential to be life-saving specifically to stop massive bleeding until emergency help arrives,” Toby said.

Kai McKenzie added, “The Shark Bite Kits are a great idea that could really save someone’s life.”

LOCAL artists explore a monochrome theme in Port Stephens Community Arts Centre’s latest exhibition.

The works focus on line, form and texture rather than a broad colour palette, inviting viewers to engage with shape and composition in new ways.

The featured potter for the exhibition is Daad Ruelle, whose creative practice has been shaped by lived experiences across the Middle East, Africa, Europe and the Caribbean.

“I believe that in art, every day is a journey for learning,” she said.

Ruelle first began working with silk painting before turning her attention towards ceramics.

After relocating to Port Stephens, she undertook full-time studies in ceramics, art and design at the Hunter School of Art in

Newcastle.

Ruelle describes nature as central to her practice.

“Nature is the source of my inspiration; this is reflected in my work, and I produce lovely coloured pieces, inspired by the oceans, forests, birds and butterflies.”

Tomaree’s untold history wins national prize

By Jacie WHITFIELD WHEN Judy Washington learned she had won the Australian Society of Archivists’ Mander Jones Award for her book "Paradise Interrupted: Tomaree Headland Port Stephens in World War II", her reaction was immediate and overwhelming.

“Immense disbelief,” she said.

“It was an Australia-wide award and only one book was chosen in its category.

“On reflection, the award made the four years of research and writing feel even more worthwhile.”

Those four years, marked by painstaking research, deep digging through longforgotten files, and countless conversations with people connected to Tomaree Headland, culminated in a work that not only impressed archivists but also reshaped the community’s understanding of its own wartime history.

The award celebrates exceptional use of archives, and Judy’s research led her into surprising and deeply moving territory.

The Award Judges described the book as “an outstanding professional history, meticulously researched and presented”.

“The absorbing stories

of a little-known part of Australia’s WWII history of defence, and the continuing post-war transformations of this site of natural beauty, are authoritatively told, using impeccably cited archival records, oral histories, superb photographs, maps and illustrations.”

Drawing on extensive archival records, including many once classified as Top Secret, as well as oral histories, military diaries, photographs and government documents, Judy reveals the hidden wartime world that existed behind what was then a quiet fishing village of just 400 residents.

The book uncovers the extraordinary scale of military activity that took place at Tomaree during the 1940s.

It chronicles the construction of massive gun emplacements, camouflaged magazines and observation posts precariously carved into cliffs; the establishment of a radar station atop the steep 580-foot summit; and the rigorous amphibious training operations that prepared more than 30,000 Australian, American and British servicemen for deployment in the South Pacific.

Through vivid storytelling, the story explores the human encounter, capturing the experiences of soldiers, engineers, radar operators and local families whose lives became entangled with the

war effort.

Judy brings forward the stories of ingenuity, hardship and determination found within war diaries and firsthand accounts, shedding light on the challenges of building and operating complex defence installations in remote and rugged terrain.

The narrative extends into the post-war years, documenting how the area later became a temporary home for migrants from wartorn Europe, adding another layer to its rich heritage.

Paradise Interrupted ultimately connects past and present, inviting readers to walk the headland with new eyes, seeing not only today’s coastal beauty but also the remarkable historical events concealed within its landscape.

Judy’s work ensures that the legacy of Tomaree’s wartime significance is preserved, appreciated and understood by generations to come.

Among the most striking discoveries were the engineering feats documented in once–top secret files about Fort Tomaree.

“What impacted me most was the extreme difficulty in building the huge gun emplacements and observation posts on the steep slope of the headland,” she said.

Materials and equipment were dragged up near-vertical hillsides, entire sections of the hill were carved out then

disguised under layers of soil, and structures were anchored onto precarious cliff faces.

Just as the work neared completion, the War Diaries described the devastating storms of October 1942, which damaged the surf section so severely that the records read like scenes from a disaster film.

Judy also drew heavily on oral histories, first-hand accounts that often revealed the most human and enduring details.

One story in particular stayed with her.

The radar station atop the 580-foot summit of Tomaree Headland had been built with the help of a narrow-gauge railway, designed to haul materials up the 45-degree slope.

But when the RAAF installers arrived carrying precious radar equipment, large cabinets the size of upright pianos, they discovered that no one had left them the trolley, cable or winch needed to use the railway.

“Obviously we would have to do this job the hard way,” recalled RAAF member Ted Williams.

And so, sweating and swapping places at each corner of the cabinets, the men hauled the heavy units up the treacherous path.

When they reached the summit, dusty and exhausted, they found everything else had been perfectly prepared, except the means to get there.

The response to Paradise Interrupted from veterans’ families and locals has been immediate and heartfelt.

Many readers discovered that, despite their personal connections to the site, they had only ever known a small piece of its story.

Judy’s work expanded their understanding of Fort Tomaree, the amphibious training base, and the region’s strategic wartime importance.

The award affirms the larger purpose behind her efforts.

She had long been concerned that future planning for Tomaree Lodge and the surrounding heritage sites must be grounded in factual, accessible history.

Her research, now stored

in a comprehensive database, ensures that future generations and decision-makers can rely on accurate information.

As she turns back to two long-paused book projects, the award has renewed her enthusiasm.

What she hopes most is that readers will come away with a deeper appreciation for the region’s extraordinary role in the 1940s and 1950s, a village of only 400 that trained over 30,000 servicemen and later sheltered migrants rebuilding their lives.

“I hope readers can walk through these places and visualise the important activities that once took place,” she said.

“Our past is still all around us, waiting to be understood.”

“Now they can feel they can approach her more easily.”

Constable Leanne Mann were also at Karuah, and joined lockup keeper Fred Saba at Lemon Tree Passage police station on 11 December.

“Large Indigenous populations in the area make it really important for the police, with Gemma’s help, to break down barriers and make them feel comfortable to reach out to the station,” Inspector Donovan explained.

“Our priority is that the community know their local officer in their sector, and to show that we want to connect and be available, and be visible.”

At Lemon Tree Passage, a contingent of 15 First Nations girls from Tanilba Bay Public School were in attendance.

The students are participants in the Sista Speak program, which was launched

in 2016 for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander girls in Years 4, 5 and 6.

The program explores developing and maintaining quality relationships with others, goal setting, positive choices, friendships and developing self-esteem.

The students and their teachers spoke at the station about leadership and the importance of strong women leaders in the community, then presented a painted police tactical shield to officers.

The shield will be

displayed in the foyer, taking pride of place in the police station.

Such events have recently been held in Dungog and Tea Gardens, with upcoming sessions planned at Stroud and Paterson.

Police step up community engagement

OFFICERS from Port Stephens-Hunter Police District (PSHPD) have ramped up community engagement across their expansive coverage area, hosting barbecues at Karuah and Lemon Tree Passage in recent weeks.

“We want to encourage the local community to engage with their local police, and feel comfortable to tell us about any crimes or concerns, rather than leave it to the social media platforms,” District supervisor Sergeant Wes Taylor told NOTA. “We’ve done similar events in the district, [but] this one at Karuah was one of the better turnouts that we had, especially with plenty of young people.”

Many Karuah families took the opportunity to partake in the free barbecue on Thursday 4 December, with many receiving gifts donated by Roco of Yibinarra and Wahroonga Aboriginal Corporation.

2025 CHRISTMAS WISHES Christmas decorations steeped in history

HAVE you ever wondered why we decorate cone-bearing trees, eat turkey and ham, light candles, pull bonbons, hang Christmas stockings, decorate homes, make wreaths and credit Santa with delivering presents via flying reindeer?

Most of us know that many Christmas traditions from the Northern Hemisphere sailed south with immigrants.

But many so-called Christmas traditions originated from pagan rituals associated with the Winter Solstice, just before Christmas.

Burning Yule logs, present giving, decorating homes with holly, kissing under the mistletoe and making wreaths were activities designed to nurture new life, fertility, and promote peace and hope.

Before Clement Clark Moore wrote the poem “A Visit from St Nicholas” in 1822 and before Coca-Cola transformed Saint Nicholas into an extension of their brand, the 4th Century Bishop of Myra in Asia Minor was being revered for his kindness and generosity - especially to

children and the needy.

As Christianity spread, the Greek Saint Nicholas evolved.

For centuries, the Dutch have celebrated Sinterklaas on 5 December, which is St Nicholas’s Names Day. Traditionally children leave their shoes out in the hope they will find them filled with treats and presents in the morning.

In some regions of Italy, La Befana was believed to sort “the naughty” from “the nice” on 6 January.

Arriving by broomstick, she would fill stockings with presents for the good and lumps of coal for the naughty.

Latvia claims to be the birthplace of the first decorated Christmas Tree when, in 1510, a pine tree was erected in the Town Hall Square in Riga; a tradition that continues to this day.

Latvian children receive presents on Christmas Eve but only after they entertain the family with a song, a poem or a musical performance.

Before the discovery of the Americas, a Christmas fowl was usually a goose, a chicken or, for the wealthy, a peacock.

Turkey didn’t become a popular dish among the general population until the 19th Century, thanks to “A Christmas Carol” and Ebenezer Scrooge.

And what Christmas dinner would be complete

without a potato dish.

For that we can thank the Spanish who brought this plant, native to the Andes, back to Europe in the 16th Century.

While originally bonbons were designed to hold treats

in the French court, London confectioner Tom Smith adapted them to market his sugar almonds.

In 1861, he changed the name to Christmas Crackers after he added an explosive device that popped when

pulled apart - describing them as a “Bang of Expectations”.

Christmas traditions are as varied as the communities that established them, but most would agree that the most important gifts are that of Peace, Hope and Joy.

Port Stephens Coaches offering daily Sydney service

FROM 20 December, Port Stephens Coaches will expand the Sydney Express timetable to a daily service (excluding Christmas Day).

“This shift from four services a week to daily operations reflects strong community demand for simple, reliable and comfortable travel between Port Stephens and Sydney,” the team said.

“It gives residents more choice and flexibility for regular city trips, weekend visits and onward transport connections.”

Travellers can board close to home, with more than 40 pick-up points across Port

Stephens, including Nelson Bay, Shoal Bay, Salamander Bay, Fingal Bay, Soldiers Point, Anna Bay and Corlette.

“This broad coverage supports residents who prefer not to drive or navigate multiple transport modes,” the team said.

In Sydney, the Sydney Express stops at Central Station, offering direct access to trains, light rail, major transport links and key city destinations.

The service also stops at Hornsby, Pymble and Chatswood, with Ourimbah available on request in both directions.

These locations make

it easy to connect with medical precincts, education hubs, retail areas and other travel services.

The morning service departs Port Stephens from 8.25am and arrives at Central Station by 12.35pm, giving travellers a relaxed and predictable arrival window.

The afternoon return departs Central at 1.45pm and arrives across Port Stephens from 4.50pm onwards.

Travellers enjoy air-conditioned, seatbelted coaches equipped with onboard restrooms and a 20kg luggage allowance.

StrikeZone transformed into Christmas wonderland

RAYMOND Terrace StrikeZone tenpin bowl has been transformed into a Christmas wonderland complete with Santa’s grotto where parents can take their own Chrissy photos absolutely free of charge.

One bemused regular commented that she thought last year’s display was great, but this year’s is “beyond belief.”

StrikeZone owner Neville Marchbank is reluctant to say how much he has spent on the display, for fear his better half will find out.

“Suffice to say last year was a three zero effort and we may have substantially added to that,” Neville said.

“But it’s worth it to see the looks on the faces of the

children who come into our centre week after week.

“Even the big kids appear delighted and isn’t that what this season is all about?”

Santa’s grotto is delighting families.

Featuring Santa and Mary Clause complete with a reindeer, it is a perfect backdrop for photos of the children.

It is hard to believe it has been five-and-a-half years since I first came on board with NOTA, and I continue to be very proud of the role our newspapers play in their communities.

Going back to the tree, there are pros and cons of both options. Real trees look spectacular but they drop a lot of pine needles which means you're constantly sweeping. They are also not a great idea if you have an indoor

Then there is the issue of post-Christmas disposal.

Nothing looks sadder than a withering tree on the wood pile that will have to stay there until the end of March when you can burn it, unless you diligently cut it into green-bin sized offcuts.

The tree you have stored like a safer bet this year.

Though terrible from an environmental perspective, you already own it, so it's better going up in your lounge-room than being put on the council verge ready for landfill.

May I suggest that in the post-Christmas sales, you purchase a tree in a pot.

This will grow with your family, resolve the real/fake tree dilemma, and be far better from an organisational and environmental perspective for many years to come.

The NSW Minerals Council said it had already done plenty of abatement work targeting methane, enabling a 45 percent drop in their emissions since 2005.

"According to data on the NSW Net Zero Dashboard, fugitive

methane emissions from coal mines fell by 10 percent over the three years between 2020 and 2023," their submission to the inquiry says.

"As highlighted under the terms of reference, the industry is pursuing further fugitive emission abatement opportunities targeting methane abatement."

IMPROVED methane capture at six high-emission coal mines appears the state's best bet to hit climate targets.

A report released by climate advisory group Common Capital said NSW could help reach emissions targets with bestpractice abatement at the six mines, which produce half the state's coalmine emissions despite delivering less than 10 percent of the coal.

The NSW Net Zero Commission concedes the state is not on track to meet legislated targets for both 2030 and 2035, and a "sizeable" pipeline of coal project extensions would heap pressure on other

sectors to meet them.

Methane, which accounts for more than a quarter of NSW emissions, is the biggest greenhouse gas contributor from coal mines via its release from coal seams.

Almost all (96 per cent) of NSW's resource sector emissions come from coalmining, meaning the six high-emission mines are contributing about six per cent of the state's overall emissions.

"There are two key opportunities to reduce coal sector emissions and close the emissions gap in NSW - driving abatement at the six most emissions-intensive mines and managing the approval of coal mine projects already included in

NSW emissions projections," the Common Capital report says.

"This would nearly close the projected emissions gap in 2030 and reduce the 2035 gap by a third."

The report labels the potential gains "readily available", as well as cheaper and more feasible in the near term than abatement in other sectors.

The commission notes a whopping 87 percent of NSW coal is exported.

"These 'scope 3' emissions are mostly accounted for overseas, but their impacts are felt both globally and locally in NSW," it says.

Stinker’s Fishin’: Oysters for Christmas

HERE is something different for Christmas, an oyster recipe given to me by my old friend Margaret Woods.

If you love oysters, you will find more of her oyster recipes in one of my books, “Oysterman”, which is available around town.

Mambo Oyster Soup Ingredients: - 2 dozen oysters - 2 tablespoons of cornflour - 60gm butter - Half a litre of milk - Lemon pepper - Fresh parsley - 1 cup of cream Method: Melt butter in a saucepan.

Add cornflour and milk, stirring constantly.

Add parsley, cream and oysters.

Serve with fresh damper.

DFV strategy welcomed but more to be done THE State Government has launched a “landmark strategy” to respond to the perpetration of domestic and family violence (DFV) in New South Wales.

“Building Better Responses: NSW Strategy to Respond to the Use of Domestic and Family Violence 2026–2030” is NSW’s first dedicated plan aimed at disrupting DFV and focusing on those who cause or may cause harm.

“The purpose of this strategy is to drive a wholeof-government, coordinated approach to respond to people who perpetrate domestic and family violence and integrates prevention, intervention, response and recovery efforts,” the NSW Government said in a statement.

The State Government allocated $5 million in the 2024/25 Budget for perpetrator research and effective interventions.

Part of that funding was to develop the Strategy, with an Action Plan for implementing it.

The Strategy focuses on stopping, disrupting and changing perpetrators’ harmful behaviours.

Major funding, including $484.3 million for boosting access to safe and crisis accommodation and specialist supports for almost 3,000 women and children leaving domestic and family violence, and a further $48 million for expanding a specialist program to break the cycle of DFV, have been hailed as critical investments.

“Actions under the strategy will be rolled out over time, including continuing work that is already underway, such as the Men's Behaviour Change Program, strengthening services, building evidence on effective interventions, improving collaboration between services and evaluating

progress,” the government said in a statement.

The government consulted with more than 300 stakeholders, including people with lived experience, service providers, peak bodies, academics and regional communities in developing this strategy, with all calling for stronger, earlier action to prevent the use of violence.

Minister for the Prevention of Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Jodie Harrison said, “It is essential to prevent violence from happening in the first place, with work having already begun in primary prevention.

“This strategy is the next step. Real change requires addressing the perpetration of violence, to strengthen our responses to people who use domestic and family violence."

NSW Women’s Safety Commissioner Dr Hannah Tonkin said action was required on “multiple fronts to address the shocking rates of domestic and family

the Northern Territory, Western Australia and Tasmania,” she said.

“We have listened to the farming industry, animal welfare groups, and advocates like the Member for Orange Phil Donato and we have got the balance right for delivering virtual fencing on farms.”

Mr Donato said legalising virtual stock fencing is a commonsense win for farmers and regional NSW. “I’ve been calling for this reform for years because it gives producers the freedom to manage their herds more efficiently, safely, and sustainably.”

The neckbands can alert farmers to animal issues requiring intervention, and can be disabled to reduce stress.

The RSPCA says that animal welfare must remain the foremost concern, arguing

that technology should never replace “good husbandry, management and training.”

The NSW Guide to Animal Welfare for Virtual Fencing of Cattle, includes certain safeguards that must be met.

These are that: — the user must be trained in how to use the device by the supplier or manufacturer — the user must ensure devices are regularly monitored and animal welfare standards are met — devices will allow users to control the boundaries that trigger cues to the animal, but users cannot deliver cues directly to an animal — devices must use vibrational or audio cues first, before using electric cues.

“By placing responsibility back on the source of harm, the Minns Government is leading the nation.”

In implementation of the strategy, Domestic Violence

Virtual stock fencing legalised CATTLE and dairy farmers have welcomed the government’s decision to legalise virtual stock fencing, which involves using GPS collars to control the animals through audio cues and electric shocks.

The move is expected to reduce physical fencing costs, improve rotational grazing systems, and provide remote access to data on the welfare of herds.

Minister for Agriculture Tara Moriarty, announced the technology would be regulated for use in NSW, following extensive consultation with farming groups, animal welfare enforcement agencies, and suppliers.

“NSW farmers have now gained access to this new technology like their counterparts in Queensland,

NSW CEO Delia Donovan said it is vital that the specialist domestic and family violence sector is engaged as a key expert in designing and embedding programs and responses for people who use violence.

“Genuine impact will also depend on meaningful and sustained funding to ensure that services are properly resourced to deliver the actions proposed and meet the strategy’s objectives,” Ms Donovan said.

Barnardos Australia welcomed the strategy’s acknowledgement of children as victim-survivors of DFV in their own right, but says more must be done to protect them.

Barnardos frontline worker Eliza Gibbs said the state government should go one step further and put it into legislation.

“For the first time this strategy acknowledges the obvious: children are not just witnesses to domestic violence, they are victim survivors. The recognition matters,” Eliza Gibbs said.

“Children need more than acknowledgement.

“Along with their nonoffending parent, usually their mother, they need to receive age-appropriate traumainformed counselling and specialist support so they can recover, build strong relationships and enjoy the childhood they deserve.

“Under the current legislation and policies regarding DFV, children are only seen as an extension of their mother’s needs, they are not counted or recognised as victim-survivors in their own right and therefore, remain silent and hidden.”

In 2024, NSW Police recorded more than 100,000 domestic violence–related crimes, and 39 people in New South Wales were killed in domestic violence-related murders.

BOCSAR data reveals that in the last 10 years, domestic violence sexual offences increased by 103 percent, domestic violence assaults rose by 31 percent and breaches of Apprehended Violence Orders increased by 90 percent.

“We have many dairy farmers who are eager to put in virtual fencing as soon as it is legal to do so,” he said.

the benefits of this technology make it an incredibly powerful tool.

NSW Health has issued an Authority under the Poisons and Therapeutic

Goods legislation that enables pharmacists to supply prescription medicines to people without a prescription who are affected.

The temporary change is designed to assist people affected by bushfires, by ensuring they can continue to access essential medicines.

The Gropers last visited Vanuatu back in 2017 with the youngsters raising $48,000 to cover costs for this year’s trip.

Highlights included visits to a local orphanage, the Lifechanger Christian College at Mele for an impromptu skills clinic plus a scenic ferry trip to the stunning island of Ifira where they played two Sevens fixtures against Under 20 and Under 18 sides from the local Black Birds club.

The tourists also enjoyed a quad bike land and sea adventure, watching movies at Vila’s outdoor cinema, swimming at Eton Blue Lagoon and Magic Island Resort, jungle paintball, Zipline and jungle swing, and a day on Irriki Island for snorkelling, kayaking and paddle boarding.

During the visit to the Christian College, the touring party met up with teacher Brigida Sam to donate jerseys, footballs, training shirts, boots and medical supplies.

in a bone-jarring Under 20s clash before trouncing their Vanuatu counterparts 27-5 in the Under 18s challenge.

Spreading the ball wide, the Gropers demonstrated their Sevens skills to outclass the Black Birds with pure power and speed.

Leading the way were the classy Campbell, vice captain Bastiaan Osborne-Zorbas - a pocket rocket half back with exceptional skills - and rising fullback Liam Pietraszek.

Four of the tourists Campbell, Osborne-Zorbas, hooker James Ellis and forward Lachy Herring were members of Nelson Bay’s premiership-winning Under 18s side that defeated Maitland in last year’s Hunter Junior Rugby Grand Final.

Both Osborne-Zorbas and Pietraszek are bound for Sydney next season to play in the NSW Rugby Colts competition.

Dynamic playmaker Bastiaan, 18, will line up for Warringah Colts while dashing rookie Pietrraszek - after one season of junior rugby - has linked with the West Harbour club.

Olympians who give birth after 11 December and are committed to make an Olympic comeback will also be eligible for a $10,000 grant per child.

AOC president Ian Chesterman, its chief executive Mark Arbib, Paris Olympic team chef de mission Anna Meares and her Milan Winter Games counterpart Alisa Camplin fronted a media conference in Sydney on Thursday morning to announce the funding.

"This is the AOC's most significant funding announcement since the Australian Olympic Foundation (AOF) was established leading into Sydney 2000," Chesterman said.

"Women make up over 50

percent of our Olympic teams.

They are pivotal to who we are and we want to recognise that they are increasingly trying to balance starting a family and staying in elite sport.

"These grants reflect our ambition to contribute meaningfully to the Olympic movement's shared priorities, empowering athletes, strengthening gender equity, and ensuring that major Games - including Brisbane 2032 - leave lasting legacies.

"More than just groundbreaking financial support, these grants reinforce the AOC and our member sports' commitment to athlete welfare and a lifelong connection to our athletes: Once an Olympian, always an Olympian."

The AOF, which gives the AOC financial independence, is worth $200 million.

The AOC revealed the foundation this year "generated significant capital gains from its investment portfolio" and this money was used to start the future fund.

The projected costs are $42 million for the retirement grants and $1.1 million for the return to sport payments.

This will be covered by the future fund and the retirement payments will not start until 16 years after competition, to help ensure its sustainability.

The AOC will stump up the money for the team payments at an estimated cost of $7.6 million.

Meares, a four-time Olympian and two-time Olympic gold medallist in track cycling, said she is an outlier among Australians who compete at the Games.

"Seventy percent of our summer Olympians only go

to one Games, so it's clear - it is not easy to be an Olympian and it is even harder to have longevity as an Olympian," she said.

"These grants will encourage athletes to work towards multiple Games and contribute to the overall success of the team.

"This is putting value

on the experience of our Olympians. The value has always been there but now it is being financially recognised.

"It took me until my third Games cycle to build a profile and confidence to be backed financially. And now the AOC is backing every Olympian from the get-go."

Junior Gropers shine on Vanuatu tour NELSON Bay’s top rugby juniors have described their Under 18s goodwill tour of Vanuatu as the best week of their sporting lives.

Fourteen prospects from the Gropers’ powerful junior nursery have just returned from a seven day sojourn to the South Pacific island where they embraced the rich Melanesian culture and educated the locals on the finer points of rugby.

Based at the capital Port Vila, the players proved excellent ambassadors and enjoyed the paradise-like beauty, tropical lifestyle and opportunity to mix and pass on rugby tips to the local youth.

AOC rolls out $50-million athlete funding package

SPORTING mums and retiring athletes are key targets of a $50 million funding package from the Australian Olympic Committee.

It's being hailed as the AOC's most significant athlete-funding initiative since the buildup to the 2000 Sydney Olympics.

Capitalising on a boost from its sizeable investment portfolio, the AOC will set up the $20 million Olympian Futures Fund to help support the athlete grants.

The bulk of the funding will go to an athlete retirement fund, which will start to kick in after the 2032 Brisbane Olympics with $32,000 payments.

There will also be Olympic team selection payments of $5000 per athlete. Like the retirement fund, it will start

Newcastle to host Challenger Series event THE Hunter is set to make waves on the world stage, with the NSW Government announcing that a World Surf League (WSL) Challenger Series event will headline Newcastle Surfest in 2027.

Newcastle Surfest, Australia’s oldest and largest surfing festival, was elevated to the Challenger Series for the first time this year, placing Newcastle firmly on the international surfing map.

With NSW Government support through Destination NSW now secured for 2027, anticipation is building as the city strengthens its reputation as a world-class surfing destination.

In 2026, Newcastle Surfest will celebrate its 40th anniversary – representing one of the longest-running professional surfing competitions in the world.

The tournament features grassroots, amateur and elite contests across Newcastle and the Hunter region.

Now headlined by the WSL Challenger Series event, more than 80 elite male surfers and 48 elite female surfers will compete for a coveted spot on the WSL Championship Tour.

Minister for the Hunter Yasmin Catley said, “Surfest is part of Newcastle’s DNA and securing the event for 2027 is a great win for our community.

Returning for a much-anticipated encore after last year’s special, Australia’s musical theatre community comes together in support of Beyond Blue for this delightful concert. At a time of year that can be difficult for many, it’s an important reminder of the charity’s free mental health and wellbeing support. Filmed on the festively decorated set of MJ the Musical at Melbourne’s Her Majesty’s Theatre, the special sparkles with homegrown talent including Casey Donovan, Rob Mills (pictured) and Caroline O’Connor.

After filming her 2024 special in Hollywood, Delta Goodrem (pictured) returns to home soil for this sparkling evening.

Taking over Channel Nine’s Sydney studio and transforming it into a retro winter wonderland, the newlywed singer invites Cody Simpson, Jon Bon Jovi, Jordin Sparks and a bevy of talented Aussies to perform their festive favourites. There’s delightful duets, joyful surprises and moving moments in store as Goodrem shares the stage with her famous friends. A toetapping tradition that began in 2020, Goodrem’s annual special is the perfect way to celebrate the season in style.

A triple treat for soap opera fans on both sides of the Atlantic, this homegrown drama combines the talents of Neighbours stalwart Jackie Woodburne, Coronation Street favourite Kym Marsh and one-time Summer Bay resident Dannii Minogue (all pictured). Set in a Victorian coastal town, the four-part series sees Woodburne swap Susan Kennedy’s cherry locks for a bushy silver bob as Helen, the matriarch at the centre of a bitter family feud. Helen’s three adult kids are pressing her to sell a seaside hotel, but she’s determined to stay put. The situation is heightened by the arrival of Amanda (Marsh), the daughter Helen gave up decades ago.

q Raymond Terrace club junior athletes Asher MacDonald, Sydnee Farrelly, Audrey Russell and Clair Cousins combined to claim silver in the Senior Girls 4 x 100m Relay at the Port Hunter Zone Athletics Championships at Mallabula Sports Complex.

RAYMOND Terrace Athletics Centre is bubbling with junior talent in their track and field ranks.

Twenty five of the club’s best young hopefuls demonstrated their athletic prowess at this year’s Port Hunter Zone Athletics Championships at Mallabula Sports Complex.

A feature was the recordbreaking feats of top prospects Scarlett Lodge, Asher MacDonald, Audrey Russell and Ashlyn Wall and 20 Raymond Terrace juniors qualifying for the Regional

The up-and-coming Lodge won the 9yrs Girls 70m final in a record time of 11.26 seconds with MacDonald posting a new record for the 13yrs Girls 400m of 1:07.77.

Champion race walker Audrey Russell showed her class to win the 14yrs Girls 1500m racewalk in a blistering record time of 7 min 34.19 sec with the gifted Wall, 18, claiming gold and another record in the Under 20 Girls 400m sprint in 1:00.05 sec.
