THE region’s drinking water continues to meet health and safety standards, with Council noting strong performance across all water supply systems during the past financial year.

The Drinking Water and Recycled Water Reports for 2024-25, which assess water quality across five supply systems servicing Port Macquarie and Camden Haven, Wauchope, Comboyne, Telegraph Point and Long Flat, confirmed that safe drinking water was supplied throughout the year.

While a small number of guideline exceedances were recorded, the report said these were minor, investigated promptly, and managed operationally, with no impact on public health.

Most drinking water exceedances were related to high pH or low chlorine levels at low-use endpoints, particularly in parts of the Camden Haven system where water retention times are longer.

Council officers said these issues were managed through routine mains flushing and network improvements, which is expected to reduce water age once fully commissioned.

Customer complaints also fell significantly during the reporting period, dropping from 137 the previous year to 62 complaints,

PORT Macquarie-Hastings Council has received an update on the activities and development of the Friends of Camden Head Lookout volunteer group, as part of its ongoing oversight of the community-led project.

The report, presented to Council’s 11 December meeting, meets a requirement for bi-monthly updates following Council’s decision in July 2024 to endorse the establishment of the volunteer group and progress preliminary works at the popular coastal lookout.

Until a formal Memorandum of Understanding is finalised, the Council's formal relationship remains with the councilendorsed volunteer group framework.

A draft MOU is currently being reviewed

by Council’s legal advisers and will be provided to councillors for feedback once finalised.

The report also says progress has been impacted by an active Aboriginal land claim over the reserve.

Council is continuing discussions with Crown Lands NSW to clarify how the claim may affect future works and volunteer activities at the site.

The Code of Conduct Complaint Statistics report, covering the period from September 1, 2024 to August 31, 2025, details the number of complaints made

against councillors and the general manager, how they were handled, and the cost to ratepayers.

During the reporting period, five complaints were received from a range of sources including community members, council staff and the general

manager.

No complaints were lodged by councillors against fellow councillors.

Four complaints were referred to an external conduct reviewer, with two progressing to full investigation.

One investigation resulted in a finding of no breach, while another

found a breach of the code of conduct by a councillor, leading to a formal censure under the Local Government Act. The report shows $13,605 was spent on preliminary assessments alone, with the total cost of managing complaints reaching $47,372, including staff time and external

reviewer fees.

One complaint was resolved at an early stage through alternative action by the mayor or general manager.

All complaints were finalised within 12 months, with most resolved within six to nine months.

No matters were referred to external

agencies such as the Independent Commission Against Corruption, the NSW Ombudsman, the Office of Local Government or police.

Council noted the report, which will now be forwarded to the Office of Local Government as required under state regulations.

One example highlighted was the Port Macquarie Historic Courthouse Museum, where the annual licence fee increased from $547.40 to $40,700.

Even after a 50 percent rebate was applied, the revised rent of $20,350 represents a massive hike.

Cr Lisa Intemann said the scale of the increase was unacceptable.

“I’m not being hyperbolic in saying this is outrageous,” she said.

“These properties are not there as a commercial venture.

“In most cases, they are supporting the community.

“I can only assume that it is a matter of ignorance that has led to this kind of move by the State Government.”

Council officers noted the courthouse museum is

operated by volunteers, with annual operating costs of about $32,000 and income of less than $4000, meaning the revised rent alone exceeds the site’s total annual revenue.

Cr Mark Hornshaw said councils and community groups could not reasonably be expected to cope with such sudden increases.

“It’s good that we push back on this and let the government know that putting up a rate suddenly, and dramatically, is very unfair and very hard to cope with financially,” Cr Hornshaw said.

Similar increases have been applied to other councilmanaged Crown land sites, including the Laurieton HACC building, Lady Nelson Wharf and Mid North Coast Maritime Museum facilities.

Councillors resolved to write to the Minister for Lands and Property and MPs in the region seeking greater transparency and proactive consultation on future fee changes.

Council officers warned that without relief, the increased fees could place further pressure on council

budgets and risk reduced public access to important community assets.

PORT Macquarie-Hastings Council will push back against “outrageous” increases to Crown land lease and licence fees, warning the changes could threaten community access to key heritage, cultural and recreational facilities across the region.

The move follows fee increases introduced by NSW Crown Lands in August 2024, after the council had already finalised its 202425 operational budget and without prior consultation.

Council officers said the timing and scale of the increases would limit council’s ability to plan for, or absorb, the additional costs.

End of the line for Timbertown TIMBERTOWN Heritage Park will close permanently on 28 January 2026, bringing to an end more than 50 years of operation - 16 under its current family owners.

They announced their decision on 11 December, confirming that the closure follows a long period of consideration and reflects

a shift in priorities towards retirement and family time.

Interest in the site has focused on the land rather than the heritage village itself, leaving no clear pathway for the attraction to continue in its current form.

every corner of the earth and living a lifelong dream,” they shared in a statement on social media.

“We [wholeheartedly] thank all our visitors, staff and tenants for the memories.”

Timbertown has played a role in the lives of generations of families, school groups and tourists,

with many locals recalling childhood visits and seasonal events.

The owners said changing visitor patterns and broader shifts in the tourism landscape had contributed to the decision to close.

is changing [too] fast and it’s time for us to call it a day.”

The park will remain open through the upcoming summer school holidays, giving visitors one final opportunity to experience the site before the gates close.

In preparation for the closure, all souvenirs will be progressively reduced to

clear over the coming weeks.

A complete dispersal auction of Timbertown assets will take place across three days on 1, 2 and 3 May, with further details and updates to be released after Christmas.

The owners said they are looking forward to welcoming visitors for a final summer season and marking the end of an era with the community that has supported Timbertown for decades.

Applications open for art program ARTS Mid North Coast has launched “Shared Practice", an 18-month regional artist development program designed to support emerging and mid-career visual artists.

The program connects local artists with experienced mentors to foster professional growth, artistic exploration, and community engagement.

Through mentoring, group sessions, and creative development, participants will have the opportunity to gain fresh perspectives, expand their practice, and strengthen their careers in a supported environment.

“I’m super excited to be part of the program and share in the artistic journey of an amazing group of inspiring people. I can’t

wait to see what evolves,” said Jeremy Sheehan, a visual artist and Lead Mentor in the program.

Lead mentor and artist Sara Bowen added, “Mentoring is a great way for artists to develop their career.

“I’m really looking forward to working with Arts Mid North Coast and sharing the participants’ journey of making new work over the next 18 months.”

Staff praised as MNC hospitals deliver strong results PUBLIC hospitals across the Mid North Coast are providing high-quality care despite high demand in emergency departments, according to the latest Bureau of Health Information statistics.

The quarterly report is based on the period between July - September 2025.

Mid North Coast Local Health District (MNCLHD) Chief Executive Jill Wong praised staff for their commitment and dedication, despite the challenging winter quarter.

“These reports are so valuable, showing where we are performing well as a local health district, and where we can improve.”

During the quarter, there were 37,764 attendances to emergency departments (EDs) across the district, an increase of 4.2 percent (1521) compared with the same quarter in 2024.

Of these, 4891 were triage category 2 cases (emergency), an increase of 7.8 percent (353 presentations).

Triage category 3 (urgent) patients also rose to 14,221, an increase of 10.6 percent (1362 presentations).

Despite the rise in demand, the majority of ED patients (64%) began treatment on time, which is in line with the state result of 64.2 percent.

More than eight in 10 patients (83.6%) who arrived by ambulance were transferred to ED staff within the 30-minute benchmark, which was better than the state result (75.7%).

Additionally, more than seven in 10 patients (75.1%) who were treated and discharged from the ED, left within four hours of arrival, which is also better than the state result (63.2%).

During the third quarter of 2025, 3202 planned surgeries were performed across the district, a 17.4 percent (474) increase.

More than eight in 10 planned surgeries (86.1%) were performed on time, and all urgent surgeries were completed on time.

Of patients able to be treated and discharged from the ED, more than eight in 10 patients (80.9%) left within four hours.

The hospital performed 1034 planned surgeries, a 20.4 percent (175) increase compared to the same quarter last year. More than eight in 10 (84.3&) planned surgeries were completed on time, including all (100%) urgent surgeries.

MPs reminder to review bushfire plan WITH the summer season well underway, emergency services are urging the community to prioritise safety and take simple steps to prepare for extreme weather and potential emergencies.

Member for Port Macquarie Robert Dwyer said, “Summer is one of the busiest periods for emergency responders, with increased risks of bushfires, storms, floods and water-related incidents.

“Agencies across the state are reminding people to prepare a bushfire survival plan, never drive through floodwater, to swim between the flags, and ensure their homes are fire safe,” he said.

“Early preparation can save lives.

“Our emergency services work tirelessly to protect the community, but everyone has a role to play.

“Preparation is vital.

“Don’t wait until an emergency is at your doorstep, take the time now to understand your risks and get ready.”

Mr Dwyer said the call for preparedness comes as communities begin gearing up for Christmas and spending more time outdoors and around waterways.

“Authorities warn against complacency, emphasising that being aware and prepared is essential - whether at home, at work, or away on holidays.

A summer family road trip

By Pauline CAIN THE car was packed and we were off - heading north on the Pacific Highway.

The car, a 1964 Aqua Blue Ford Falcon Station Wagon, was Dad’s pride and joy.

He bought it during the year and this was its first big trip - to Murwillumbah for Christmas with my grandmother.

I was five and had just finished kindergarten, my sister was four and my brother was three.

Our lunch stop was at the park in South Grafton.

We would drive under the viaduct and then find our usual table in the park.

Mum would unpack the picnic lunch and set the table

with a seersucker tablecloth, pink plastic basket and thermos and a red tartan esky.

It was simple fare sandwiches, cordial for the kids and tea for Mum and Dad. We would have our first piece of Mum’s Christmas cake.

We never stayed long as Dad was keen to get back on the road.

The drive now takes four hours but in 1964 it must have taken at least six hours.

We arrived in Murwillumbah midafternoon where it was always hot and sticky and everyone was glad to get out of the car.

My grandmother, Foffie,

was waiting on the front step of number 13, keeping an eye out for us as we turned the corner into Myrtle Street.

Her name was Florence, and she tried to get the first grandchild to call her Flossie but the “s” sounds were too hard and he said “Foffie.”

The name stuck and most of her grandchildren called her that and still do.

Mum would fuss about unpacking, Dad would head outside and we three would rush about all excited to be in our grandmother’s house.

Then we would all gather in the kitchen for a cup of tea and another piece of Christmas cake.

My Aunt Mary and my cousin Russell lived there and we adored them both.

Sometimes there would be other aunts and uncles and cousins.

There were lots of them and the more the merrier.

The days over Christmas had a familiar routine, one that would play out for the next ten years of my childhood.

Foffie would rise first, at 5am, and make her first pot of tea.

Mum and Dad would rise an hour later, joining Foffie for the next pot of tea.

Dad would then head outside to potter in the garden and Mum and Foffie would talk until we three were up.

Mornings would be spent doing jobs around the house.

Sometimes we would go to town - to get groceries, to wander the shops, perhaps get an ice cream or a

Then home for lunch.

Nothing fancy - usually sandwiches and fruit.

After lunch we would all find somewhere to lie down; the adults and older cousins would read, the younger kids would nap.

Eventually the whole house would be still as we all drifted into sleep, lulled there by those hot summer afternoons.

Cups of tea and homemade biscuits and cake would then start at about 4pm.

Still hot, we kids would head outside with our fathers to play under the sprinkler.

Dinner was meat and three vegetables - we still hadn’t converted to salads and the women in the kitchen always looked hot and bothered.

The dessert was Christmas pudding with fruit salad and ice cream.

There were no fans or air

conditioning so we would swelter all night.

Our aunts would sit on the back step talking and smoking for hours.

The uncles would give up after a few beers and head to bed.

On Sundays and Christmas Day we would go to Mass.

Everyone knew who we were because they knew my grandmother and my mother and her siblings.

The adults would talk for almost an hour in the heat.

Being Catholic no one had eaten since the previous evening, so we were keen to get home to eat something.

That was the pattern of Christmas week in Murwillumbah each year as children.

Those hot summer days are filled with such fond memories.

Simple days but full of food, cups of tea, family stories and love.

Giving back to Lorne

By Rachael THORPE PORT Macquarie-based Real Estate Agent Martin Newell loves Lorne.

“I have been a real estate agent in the area for more than 23 years. I lived in Lorne for many years and have had family living there; it is quite simply one of my favourite places in Australia,” he told News Of The Area.

To support the communities that support him as an agent, each year Martin makes a locally based donation to an organisation or institution making an

impact.

In 2024 this contribution went to Hannam Vale Public School, with his 2025 donation being a donation of $1000 to the Lorne Rural Fire Service.

Martin selected this particular branch of the RFS as they are a relatively small station, and they rely heavily on fundraising for items not provided by the NSW RFS. The NSW Fire Service has fire management responsibility for in excess of 95 percent of the landmass of the state, with their 70,000 volunteers comprising the

world’s largest volunteer firefighting force.

Each year in NSW, the service attends more than 30,000 incidents with bushfires in particular having a huge impact on communities.

Mr Newell hopes that his donation will help Lorne RFS to prepare as crews head into the summer fire season and the official Bushfire Danger Period (BFDP), which runs until 31 March.

Farmers urged to report pasture dieback

q THE region’s producers are being urged to report any sign of pasture dieback this Summer to the Department of Primary Industries, following detections in the North Coast and Hunter.

Pasture dieback is a destructive condition that targets summer-growing grasses such as kikuyu, paspalum, buffel grass and sabi grass.

Pasture dieback typically begins as small patches but can rapidly expand, devastating pastures and paving the way for invasive

broadleaf weeds to take hold.

It is not limited by landscape or soil type.

NSW Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (NSW DPIRD) Pastures Development Officer Sarah Baker, said early detection and reporting are key to managing its spread and protecting valuable grazing land.

“Pasture dieback has been found in Northern NSW, with new detections in the Hunter Valley and Werris

Creek earlier this year,” Ms Baker said.

“It’s important to be monitoring pastures for anything unusual, for example pastures not responding as expected to recent rainfall.

“Keep an eye out for unhealthy plants with red, yellow and/or purple discoloured leaves surrounding patches of dead grasses.

“Reporting suspected pasture dieback is critical to help us understand the spread and impact of this

condition.

“Early detection allows us to monitor affected areas, support landholders with management strategies, and coordinate research efforts to find long-term solutions.

“The more information we have, the better we can respond and protect our pasture systems now and into the future.”

The presence of pasture mealybug (Heliococcus summervillei) is associated with this condition.

Mealybugs are white and only a few millimetres in

size. Their populations are at their highest in autumm.

Ms Baker said a number of diseases and pests can look similar to dieback, such as, kikuyu yellows, armyworm, nutrient deficiencies and herbicide damage, which can all negatively impact pastures.

“Producers can continue to maintain production with broadleaf species, including legumes, chicory and brassicas, which are not affected by dieback.

“Re-sowing perennial summer-growing grasses,

like kikuyu, into diebackaffected areas is not recommended.”

Not all unhealthy grass is a result of pasture dieback, which is why landholders are advised to contact Local Land Services (LLS) on 1300 795 299 for advice and support.

Producers can also report pasture dieback through the Exotic Plant Pest hotline on 1800 084 881, via email to biosecurity@dpi.nsw.gov. au with a clear photo and contact details, or complete the online reporting form.

DETECTIVES have rereleased security video as investigations continue into a shooting in Port Macquarie in October.

About 2.10am Friday 17 October, police were called to Park Street following reports of a home invasion.

They were told multiple people had entered a home and confronted a 26-yearold man.

Shots were fired by the intruders, who fled the property a short time later.

The 26-year-old man was not physically injured.

Officers from Mid North Coast Police District commenced Strike Force Swayman to investigate the

incident.

Following inquiries, police have released CCTV of a silver Toyota RAV4 seen in the area around the time of the incident.

Police are appealing for the driver and anyone with information about this vehicle to come forward.

Anyone with information about this incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or via nsw. crimestoppers.com.au.

Wauchope GPs receive Rural Service Awards HUSBAND and wife team Dr Brenton Schuetz and Dr Nandini Subbiah have received NSW Rural Medical Service Awards for more than 35 years of work in rural communities.

They were among seven General Practitioners recognised by the Rural Doctors Network (RDN)

in November during Rural Health Month.

Both received their awards at the Rural GPs Conference Dinner in Sydney in front of 300 peers.

Dr Schuetz received his award for service to Wauchope and Dr Subbiah for service to Wauchope

and Port Macquarie.

Dr Matt McAlpine, Master of Ceremonies at the dinner, spoke about the work of rural doctors.

“RDN believes that few things are valued more highly by country people than the peace of mind that comes with having a ‘local doctor’ as part of the fabric

of their community,” Dr McAlpine said.

National Rural Health Commissioner Professor Jenny May AM attended the conference and spoke with delegates.

“It’s the collegiality, it’s the networking and it’s the continuing professional development, where people who’ve got really important roles in our rural communities can get together and share stories,”

Statewide koala survey THE NSW Government has completed its first comprehensive statewide koala survey.

It says it provides the most accurate picture to date of where koalas live and how populations are distributed across the state.

Using new tools such as heat-detecting drones and acoustic recorders, scientists surveyed more than 1,000 locations across national parks, state forests and private land.

The government says the updated estimate of 274,000

koalas reflects “improved technology and more extensive survey work”.

Previous estimates of NSW’s koala populations were conducted through more traditional survey methods such as visual sightings and scat analysis.

The NSW population estimate is in line with the recently released National Koala Monitoring Program, led by the Australian Government in partnership with the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation

(CSIRO).

Minister for Climate Change and the Environment Penny Sharpe said, “This survey gives us a clearer understanding of where koalas remain in NSW. “It is an important tool to guide conservation decisions.

“The Minns Labor Government has a strong record on koala conservation, and this survey shows we have been making the right decisions to ensure their survival.”

A MINISTERIAL Direction will require NSW Government agencies to take stronger action to address modern slavery risks.

Minister for Domestic Manufacturing and Government Procurement Courtney Houssos has directed all NSW Government agencies to include modern

slavery tender clauses in procurement categories identified as ‘high risk’.

The change will come into effect in January, with a six month transition period.

This means that any supplier bidding for highrisk government contracts will need to clearly demonstrate the steps they are taking to prevent modern

slavery in their operations and supply chains.

“This buying power gives us a unique opportunity to influence supply chains, demand ethical practices, and dismantle systems of exploitation.

“Job creation should go hand-in-hand with ethical sourcing.

“We want to see new jobs that are sustainable, and

supply chains managing the risk of exploitation.”

Model clauses have been designed by the Office of the NSW Anti-slavery Commissioner as a resource for agencies.

NSW Anti-slavery Commissioner Dr James Cockayne said, “This Direction is an important step towards establishing

NSW as a model contracting party on anti-slavery issues.

“It will help NSW Government entities take reasonable steps to manage modern slavery risks in their supply-chains.

“Mandating the Model Tender Clauses for high-risk procurements means that agencies must, from 1 July next year, assess suppliers against the Guidance on Reasonable Steps I issued two years ago.”

Bay, Western Australia, researchers found males with stronger, tighter social networks showed slower biological ageing.

“The health benefits of friendship are not unique to humans, but a fundamental biological principle across social mammals,” Dr Gerber says.

“Social needs are biological needs.”

Dr Gerber hopes to see similar studies in elephants, primates, wolves and other highly social species.

“I predict we’ll find that friendship is a natural antiageing secret across social animals.”

For humans, the message is clear: invest in meaningful relationships - they’re as essential as a good diet and exercise.

NEW research shows male bottlenose dolphins with strong friendships age more slowly than their more solitary peers.

The new UNSW Sydney research reveals for the first time in any non-human species that social bonds can slow ageing at the cellular level.

“Social connections are so important for health

that they slow down ageing at the cellular level,” says lead author Dr Livia Gerber, who conducted the study at UNSW and now works at CSIRO’s National Research Collections Australia.

“We knew social bonds helped animals live longer, but this is the first time we’ve shown they affect the ageing process.”

Marine Rescue volunteers return 800-plus boaters to safety MARINE Rescue NSW volunteers across the state returned 823 people safely to shore during November, completing more than 370 search and rescue missions including 108 emergency responses.

Acting Commissioner Todd Andrews said demand remains high for the volunteer service.

“Following successive record months in September and October, our volunteers were in high demand throughout November, completing 373 search and rescue missions, just 18 fewer than the record set in 2022.

“We are seeing more boaters out on the water and expect those numbers to rise as we head into the summer holidays.

“Boaters need to

ensure their vessel is well maintained, carry ample clean fuel, and always wear a lifejacket to avoid becoming a statistic,” he said.

On the Mid North Coast, 23 search and rescue missions were completed including 11 emergency responses.

A total of 54 people safely were returned to shore across all nine Mid North Coast units – Woolgoolga, Coffs Harbour, Nambucca, Trial Bay, Lord Howe Island, Port Macquarie, Camden Haven, Crowdy Harrington and Forster Tuncurry.

In the Hunter and Central Coast region, 112 search and rescue missions including 29 emergency responses were completed, with 211 people safely returned to shore across Port Stephens, Lemon Tree Passage, Newcastle,

Lake Macquarie, Norah Head, Tuggerah Lakes, Brisbane Water and Terrigal units.

Statewide last month, 56 percent of responses were for engine, battery, and fuel issues, while crews also attended 22 groundings.

“Groundings are avoidable. Boaters must be aware of the tides, the environment, and conditions.

“If boating in an unfamiliar area, consult local charts and speak with the nearest Marine Rescue NSW unit before heading out,” Acting Commissioner Andrews said.

Marine Rescue NSW radio operators managed 17,566 calls in November and kept watch over 19,467 people on board Logged On vessels.

“Logging On is quick and simple and could save your life. Boaters can Log On 24/7

via the free Marine Rescue NSW app or VHF channel 16. Logging On ensures

our skilled volunteers can monitor a boater’s safe return, and if they go overdue,

a search will be initiated,” Acting Commissioner Andrews said.

The NSW Net Zero Commission concedes the state is not on track to meet legislated targets for both 2030 and 2035, and a "sizeable" pipeline of coal project extensions would heap pressure on other sectors to meet them.

Methane, which accounts for more than a quarter of NSW emissions, is the biggest greenhouse gas contributor from coal mines via its release from coal seams.

Almost all (96 per cent) of NSW's resource sector emissions come from coalmining, meaning the six high-emission mines are contributing about six per cent of the state's overall emissions.

"There are two key opportunities to reduce coal sector emissions and close

the emissions gap in NSW driving abatement at the six most emissions-intensive mines and managing the approval of coal mine projects already included in NSW emissions projections," the Common Capital report says.

"This would nearly close the projected emissions gap in 2030 and reduce the 2035 gap by a third."

The report labels the potential gains "readily available", as well as cheaper and more feasible in the near term than abatement in

other sectors.

The commission notes a whopping 87 percent of NSW coal is exported.

"These 'scope 3' emissions are mostly accounted for overseas, but their impacts are felt both globally and locally in NSW," it says.

"They drive rising temperatures and climate instability and make it more difficult to adapt to the effects of climate change."

The NSW Minerals Council said it had already done plenty of abatement

work targeting methane, enabling a 45 percent drop in their emissions since 2005.

"According to data on the NSW Net Zero Dashboard, fugitive methane emissions from coal mines fell by 10 percent over the three years between 2020 and 2023," their submission to the inquiry says.

"As highlighted under the terms of reference, the industry is pursuing further fugitive emission abatement opportunities targeting methane abatement."

In December, after feedback and further analysis, the Board opted not to enforce mandatory health checks and instead seek a “more nuanced and collaborative solution”.

According to the Board, new analysis of the outcome of complaints to AHPRA shows the issues that require regulatory action for doctors aged over 70 are broader than health and most commonly include concerns about communication, clinical care, pharmacy/medication, as well as health.

“The Board values the contribution of late career doctors to their patients, the medical profession and our community,” Medical Board of Australia Chair Dr Susan O’Dwyer said.

“There are also some clear issues in the practice of some doctors in this group that health checks alone won’t address.

“We are keen to collaborate with the profession on supporting this group of doctors to keep their practice safe and their knowledge and skills up to date.”

The Board noted there was no existing research demonstrating that health checks would definitively reduce notifications.

Responding to consultation feedback, the Board examined more recent notifications data, to compare regulatory action taken about doctors aged 70 and over, compared to doctors aged under 70.

The Board analysed AHPRA registrations and notifications data about late career doctors from 20222024, sourced in October 2025.

While the number of late career doctors involved in

regulatory action each year is relatively small (70 in 202223 and 60 in 2023-24), the data shows: • regulatory action is taken about late career doctors at 1.6 times the rate it is taken about doctors aged under 70 • regulatory action is more likely to be taken about communication concerns (2.5 times more often), clinical care (1.8 times more often), and pharmacy/medication issues (1.4 times more often). In relation to health, regulatory action was taken at around the same level (1.08 times more often) • the proportion of late career doctors in Australia’s medical workforce decreased from 6.8 percent to 4.8 percent of the total practising medical workforce between 2020 and 2025, with 6,988 doctors aged 70 and over practising medicine on 30 June 2025.

The Australian Medical Association (AMA) welcomed the Board’s decision not to

proceed with mandatory health checks.

“We have consistently advocated for a balanced, evidence-based approach that protects patients while respecting the dignity and autonomy of late-career doctors,” AMA President Dr Danielle McMullen said “We reaffirm our support for every doctor having a usual GP and regular confidential checkups as a voluntary and preventive measure - not a regulatory requirement.”

Dr McMullen said the AMA was looking forward to working with the Board, specialist colleges, CPD homes, and doctors’ health organisations to develop profession-led support mechanisms.

“We welcome the Board’s commitment to ongoing monitoring of complaints data and encourage transparency in how profession-led approaches are evaluated."

Royal Australian College of General Practitioners

(RACGP) President Dr Michael Wright agreed the MBA had made the right call.

“We are pleased that the MBA has taken our feedback on board,” he said.

“Ageist rules such as mandatory age checks or retirement ages aren’t the answer. “We all need to work to the age and with the capacity that we can, should and want to.

“Mandatory health checks don’t reduce patient harms or notifications.

“Instead, they risk increasing administrative burdens for GPs and worsening workforce shortages.”

Dr Wright emphasised that a focus on supporting doctors’ health and wellbeing, so they can practise safely for as long as they choose, is the right path.

“Having worked with GPs in their 70s and 80s, including my father, I know the invaluable care our highly experienced senior GPs can offer,” he said.

ONCE again David Lawrence from Dunbogan is making erroneous claims that climate change is a conspiracy promulgated by the United Nations and that the Covid vaccine was ineffective and unsafe.

This disinformation is dangerous and completely unhelpful as we face the dire threats from the increase in CO2 in our atmosphere.

While we may not necessarily agree with the most effective solutions to ameliorate the effects of global warming, we are mad and irresponsible if we don't at least make an effort to address this major threat to our way of living.

The science about global warming and its causes and effects is well established and Mr Lawrence's position is untenable.

In regard to his comments about the Covid vaccine, a recent study of almost half the population of France has shown that young and middle-aged people who had been vaccinated against COVID-19 with mRNA vaccines have been 74 percent less likely to subsequently die from COVID-19.

More notably, those who had been vaccinated were a quarter less likely to die in the following four years from any cause than those who were not vaccinated.

People who work away from home find it very difficult to grasp the work from home concept. They equate home with Netflix at the highest volume level possible, long, meandering lunches, booming music, concerns around a bare pantry, and conversations that somehow fail to recognise that you're working on a laptop. They cannot grasp that you're not snavelling post-Christmas sales, but instead immersing yourself in tasks requiring access to your alreadydiminished concentration levels, since your brain is suffering from the gutbrain disconnect that manifests after a mountain of rum balls and ham done 10 ways.

You can't expect to be able to work effectively from home with visitors. It's like trying to write a will in a shopping centre food court. In the end, you just leave a bequest of $500,000 to the lady wiping down the tables, because she's the only one being helpful (and quiet).

There are a few ways around it and I'd try any or all of these: 1. Let guests know that your festive period ends at a set date (say, Boxing Day) and you will be working from home from that point. They can stay, but you won't be available between the hours of 9am-5pm (unless they want to bring you a plate of food at midday or an afternoon cuppa).

2. Wear noise-cancelling headphones. Ignored often enough, a guest becomes a bit like a stray dog.

They either leave the premises or dig holes in the backyard (suggest the insertion of some plants to make this worthwhile).

3. Have a set work area and stipulate that when you are in that room, you are at work. You can't work effectively in the lounge or dining room with guests. It just doesn't work.

4. Go to a different location -perhaps the local library or a park.

There may be noise, but it won't require a response from you.

I hope this assists, Norman.

Perhaps if none of these strategies work, you can rotate between the workplaces of your guests when they return to work. I'm confident that Gerard from the local council's executive team will get the message when his PowerPoint presentation is interrupted 17 times as you interject with queries about where he keeps the spare toilet paper, what is on the menu for lunch, the location of his Ryobi multi-tool, and so on.

AFL North Coast’s top junior players have been selected into Sydney Swans Academy squads for 2026.

A record number of 52 players from the region were selected to the squads, bettering the 45 players chosen in 2024.

The QBE Sydney Swans Academy exists to increase the number of players in NSW who have expert AFL knowledge and high-level skills.

Established in 2010, the Academy has nurtured and developed a number of elite AFL-level players, but also made a significant contribution to the growth and strength of the code in NSW. The Academy provides a professional, age-appropriate development program for males and females aged 11 to 19, and each year the Academy trains up to 700 players.

COURTNEY Date has just completed her first year of Little Athletics at Camden Haven.

The 10-year-old from Bobs Creek now has a haul of awards so large that her family jokes about her needing a bigger bedroom wall to accommodate them all.

Last month, Courtney attended the School Sport Australia (SSA) Track and Field Championships for 10-12-year-olds, at the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) where she claimed silver in the Combined 100m Relay, Bronze in the Shot Put, and Bronze in the Discus.

Courtney’s dad Brendan told News Of The Area, “Courtney tells everyone that her favourite part of going to Canberra was competing in Shot Put and Discus and hearing the crowd cheering her on.

“As we say in our family, she just really likes throwing things.”

Following these wins, Courtney has received the Athletics NSW Catholic Primary School (CPS) Maroon Award 2025. It is not just for her Canberra achievements, but also her outstanding performance at the NSW Primary Schools Sports Association [PSSA] Athletics Championships.

This competition saw her earn silver in Shot Put as well as setting a new record in her classification; with the award stating, “Courtney’s achievements reflect her incredible strength, skill, and determination, making her a true inspiration and a standout athlete at both state and national levels.”

The youngest of four children, Courtney attends St Joseph's School in Laurieton, and also fits in netball and swimming at a state representative level.
