celebrated with a ceremony at the Nambucca Heads cinema on Sunday, 7 December.

by Miimi Aboriginal Corporation in partnership with the Brotherhood of St. Laurence, HIPPY is a two-year in-home learning program for families with children aged three to four, designed to build early learning skills and strengthen parenting confidence.

Funded by the Federal Department of Social Services, HIPPY has operated nationally for 25 years, reaching over 28,500 families, and is now active at 100 sites, with half focused on First Nations communities.

For the past 11 years, the program has been making a lasting impact in the Nambucca Valley, helping more than 300 families engage in early learning at home.

At Sunday’s graduation, Miimi Aboriginal Corporation’s HIPPY Program Coordinator Sophie Ellis said the celebration was not only about the children, but also the parents and carers who dedicated themselves to the program.

“Every child, every parent and every team member who is part of Nambucca Valley HIPPY has worked incredibly hard to get to graduation, and that should be celebrated,” she said.

“The beauty of HIPPY is that it puts tools, training and support in the hands of parents and carers to learn at home with their child, spending more regular quality time together.”

Sophie highlighted that each of the 18 graduates would now enter school ahead of the curve, having already developed a love of learning and with families who are actively engaged in their education.

“We’d like to congratulate everyone who participated this year,” she said.

“We know they’re ready

to shine.”

Although unable to be at the ceremony, Brotherhood of St. Laurence HIPPY Senior Manager Siska Frederick told News Of The Area that the long-term success of the program was evident across families and communities.

“We are so proud of every graduate, both the child and their caregivers,” she said.

“We know that parents and carers are often their child’s most important teacher, inspiring a love of learning and seeding social connections with the community and early childhood development system.”

In his address at the ceremony, Nambucca Valley Mayor Gary Lee praised the local program and the efforts of Miimi Aboriginal

Corporation.

“This community should be incredibly proud that more than 300 families have been supported through HIPPY in the Nambucca Valley,” he said.

Speaking directly to the children, he added, “Your curiosity, your energy, and your excitement remind us all of why learning matters.”

The Mayor also acknowledged the commitment of parents.

“Balancing work, home and daily life is not easy.

“Your dedication strengthens not only your household but the entire community,” he said, before wishing the families a Merry Christmas and encouraging them to view the graduation as the beginning of a bright and joyful journey.

Nambucca property values surge as region outpaces Sydney growth FROM Page 1 72.7 percent since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.

New figures from Cotality show the LGA’s growth has outpaced both the national average (50.4 percent) and Greater Sydney (38.9 percent) over the same period.

Houses rose an even stronger 74 percent, while units increased 52.5 percent.

Over the past 20 years, dwelling values in the Nambucca Valley have risen 119.1 percent, with houses up 126.3 percent and units up 64.9 percent.

In 2005, the average house price in Nambucca was $319,945. Fast forward

to October 2025, and it’s $724,038.

This long-term growth positions the region among the North Coast’s bestperforming markets.

Cotality executive research director Tim Lawless said regional NSW had seen exceptional growth since late 2019.

“Housing values across regional NSW have risen 61 percent, compared with a national average of 50.4 percent,” he said.

“Almost half of the 20year growth in regional NSW has occurred in the past six years.”

Lawless said shifting buyer preferences had driven

much of the uplift.

“Lifestyle markets like Nambucca benefited heavily from internal migration during and after COVID,” he said.

“Hybrid work patterns also encouraged more buyers to consider regional locations.”

He said affordability pressures in Sydney also played a key role.

“Sydney’s premium over regional NSW has fallen from 86 percent in 2019 to 59 percent today,” Lawless said.

“That’s a major structural shift in demand.”

Growth has now eased to a more sustainable pace.

“Annual dwelling value

increases across the LGAs we analysed – between Coffs Harbour and Port Stephens – range from 4.7 to 6.4 percent, but well down from the pandemic highs when the peak annual growth rate ranged from 29.5 percent to 39.9 percent,” Lawless said.

“It’s still positive, but far more balanced.”

Port Stephens posted the strongest property-market growth of the examined coastal LGAs since December 2019, with dwelling values rising 73.6 percent.

Port Macquarie saw dwelling values surge by 59.9 percent over the same period, while Coffs Harbour recorded a 57 percent rise.

“I don’t think I was conservative in my uni years,” he said.

“That was shaped when I started life as a working adult, paying more attention to the economy and how it appeared to operate.

“I was Chair of the Oz Group Co-op and VicePresident of the berry association, and that exposed me to government policies, compliance, advocacy, etc.”

It was during this time he

came to the conclusion that a conservative approach was preferable for solid economic outcomes, so he became a member of the National Party.

“I always aligned with the Nationals values.”

Mr Singh never gave any thought to entering party politics until former member for Coffs Harbour, Andrew Fraser, announced his retirement and encouraged him to consider standing in the vacated seat.

“I sat down with Andrew to pick his brains and find out what it really meant,” he said.

“He explained the job is about helping the community.

“I’d always been community minded, but I also saw there were some strong policy issues that I could make a contribution to.”

While it was ostensibly the economic platform that attracted him to the National Party, Mr Singh explained that in other areas, especially social issues, the Nationals are often on the progressive side of politics.

He credits this to the fact most National candidates come from “the real world” rather than working their way through the political machine.

“Very few of us held any political positions - such as working in ministerial offices.

And we are not necessarily driven by, or locked into, a narrow political ideology.

“We discuss things. And we all want similar things for

By Leigh WATSON A THIRD-generation local, the Member for Coffs Harbour and recently elected leader of the NSW Nationals, Gurmesh Singh, grew up in a Woolgoolga farming family of Indian heritage.

Life in the family and community revolved around agriculture - first bananas then macadamias, and later berries.

During that time and through his teens, Mr Singh wasn’t all that fussed about farming life and didn’t see it as his future.

“I finished high school in 2000 and there were no opportunities here for me,

so I had to leave and go to Sydney,” he said.

After completing a degree in Industrial Design, he settled in Sydney for some years, working successfully in various roles in design and marketing, including a stint in Qantas.

He eventually accepted a job offer back in the Coffs region, doing similar work.

Then, due to a need in the family, and “a little bit of an interest” he decided to give farming a go.

“Initially it was a midcareer break that turned out to be much more.”

Mr Singh took to farming life more enthusiastically than before, but the broader

Despite his new leadership role, Mr Singh intends to remain approachable.

He is known for being involved in community groups and also frequenting local coffee shops where people can approach him for a chat.

There is no doubt that he is personable and grounded.

His values-driven approach to politics underpins all he does, giving him a genuineness that people respond to.

His supporters would say he is not your typical pollie.

Mr Singh recently gained widespread admiration from all sides when he spoke in Parliament about racism in Australia – the first time he has raised this issue publicly.

He was compelled to do this by a few factors, including an increase in the number of race-related incidents towards IndianAustralians, and nationwide anti-migration marches.

But it was natter by his opposition colleagues that spurred him to speak out.

“I got this feedback that the left side of politics was saying, ‘he’s only going to look after his Indian mates’.

“That’s not who I am.

“It’s quite insulting because I’ve never seen myself as anything but Australian – I‘ve never even supported India in cricket!”

Bearing testimony to this, a cherished baggy green sits proudly in his office – a souvenir of the traditional Pollies vs Press charity match

“My job is to represent all Australians - whether they’ve been here 100 years or a month.

“That’s why I’ve never sought to bring attention to my Indian ethnicity.”

Nonetheless, he admits there is pride across the Australian Indian diaspora at his success.

“In effect, a glass ceiling has been broken,” he said, explaining that while Indians in Australia have done well in other fields such as engineering, law, medicine and agriculture, they haven’t yet broken through the political space in a huge way.

At 42, Mr Singh also brings a generational shift to his role.

“I’m the youngest in the NSW National party room,” he said, noting that he is the youngest NSW Nationals leader since 1922 when Sir Michael Bruxner assumed the role at age 40.

As leader of the NSW Nationals, he says he’s now in a stronger position to influence the policies that will guide the opposition to the next election.

He insists that Coffs Harbour should be one of the premier cities in NSW and will be driving this in the next 18 months or so, to the election and beyond.

“I want to make sure that our kids in Coffs have a choice whether they want to stay or leave.

“That means we need to have an economically thriving Coffs Coast.”

Staff praised as MNC hospitals deliver strong results

PUBLIC hospitals across the Mid North Coast are providing high-quality care despite high demand in emergency departments, according to the latest Bureau of Health Information statistics.

The quarterly report is based on the period between July - September 2025.

Mid North Coast Local Health District (MNCLHD) Chief Executive Jill Wong praised staff for their commitment and dedication, despite the challenging winter quarter.

“These reports are so valuable, showing where we are performing well as a local health district, and where we can improve.”

During the quarter, there were 37,764 attendances to emergency departments (EDs) across the district, an increase of 4.2 percent (1521) compared with the same quarter in 2024.

Of these, 4891 were triage category 2 cases (emergency), an increase of 7.8 percent (353 presentations).

Triage category 3 (urgent) patients also rose to 14,221, an increase of 10.6 percent (1362 presentations).

Despite the rise in demand, the majority of

ED patients (64%) began treatment on time, which is in line with the state result of 64.2 percent.

More than eight in 10 patients (83.6%) who arrived by ambulance were transferred to ED staff within the 30-minute benchmark, which was better than the state result (75.7%).

Additionally, more than seven in 10 patients (75.1%) who were treated and discharged from the ED, left within four hours of arrival, which is also better than the state result (63.2%).

During the third quarter of 2025, 3202 planned surgeries were performed across the district, a 17.4 percent (474) increase.

More than eight in 10 planned surgeries (86.1%) were performed on time, and all urgent surgeries were completed on time.

Coffs Harbour Health Campus During the quarter, Coffs Harbour Health Campus had 12,011 ED attendances, an increase of 3.8 percent (441 attendances) compared to the same quarter last year. More than seven in 10 patients (76.2%) who arrived by ambulance were transferred to ED staff within the 30-minute benchmark time, which is better than the state result for hospitals of a

similar size (71.9%t).

The hospital performed 1094 elective surgeries, a 23.6 percent (209) increase.

All urgent surgeries were completed on time. Across all urgency categories, more than eight in 10 planned surgeries (80.6%) were performed on time.

Kempsey District Hospital Throughout the third quarter of 2025, Kempsey District Hospital had 6705 ED attendances with more than seven in 10 patients (72%) beginning their treatment on time. Almost all (96.7%) who arrived by ambulance were transferred from ambulance paramedics to ED staff within the 30-minute benchmark.

The majority of patients (80.3%) able to be treated and discharged from the ED, left within four hours.

The hospital performed 405 planned surgeries, with almost all (99.3%) completed on time, an improvement of 3.2 percentage points.

All urgent surgeries were completed on time.

Macksville District Hospital Macksville had 3580 ED attendances, an increase of 3.1 percent (109) compared to the same quarter in 2024. Almost nine in 10 patients (87.9%) began their treatment on time.

Almost all patients (95.9%) who arrived by ambulance were transferred to ED staff within 30-minutes.

The hospital performed 366 planned surgeries, a 29.3 percent (83) increase.

More than eight in 10 (84.2%) planned surgeries were completed on time, a substantial improvement of 41.4 percentage points compared with the same quarter in 2024.

Port Macquarie Base Hospital PMBH had 13,478 ED attendances, up 5.5 percent or 698 attendances, compared to the same quarter last year.

The majority of patients (61%) began their treatment on time.

More than eight in 10 patients (83.7%) were transferred from ambulance to ED staff within 30-minutes.

Of patients able to be treated and discharged from the ED, more than eight in 10 patients (80.9%) left within four hours.

The hospital performed 1034 planned surgeries, a 20.4 percent (175) increase compared to the same quarter last year. More than eight in 10 (84.3&) planned surgeries were completed on time, including all (100%) urgent surgeries.

Midwives Association General Secretary Shaye Candish, said the data demonstrates nurses and midwives are working increasingly harder with limited resources.

“Triage one, two and three presentations in [all] EDs have increased considerably this quarter, highlighting the rise in patient acuity our members experience on a daily basis,” he said.

As our EDs get busier, staffing ratios will be crucial to keep both staff and patients safe and to ensure quality care can be provided.”

NSWNMA Assistant General Secretary Michael Whaites, said more investment in public healthcare was desperately needed.

“The BHI data shows there are still almost 95,000

patients on the elective surgery waitlist.

“In order to bring these down permanently, we must see the federal government contribute more funding to the states - they can’t do it alone.”

If an illness or injury is not serious or life-threatening, the community is encouraged to call Healthdirect on 1800 022 222 for 24-hour advice.

Patients who feel their condition has deteriorated while awaiting surgery are encouraged to contact their treating doctor who can upgrade their urgency category if appropriate.

By Matt TAYLOR NAMBUCCA Valley’s property values have surged by 72.7 percent since the start of the pandemic, and local agents say the rise reflects both long-term cycles and the region’s growing appeal for families and retirees.

McGrath Nambucca Valley principal Troy Pinder said the trajectory fits the region’s classic pattern of steady, reliable increases.

“It’s the old seven-year cycle,” he said.

“Every seven years, depending on the location, you generally see house prices increasing.

“But since COVID, like everywhere, we saw a significant rise and then a slight correction.

“Now we’re falling back into what we call a normal rate of index value growth.”

Pinder said the Nambucca region’s natural beauty continues to draw buyer interest.

“The valley is such a desirable location,” he said.

“You’ve got the pavilion, the golf course, and it’s where two rivers meet the sea.

“The coastal side of the highway is attractive for retirees or young families who may not be able to afford to buy in Coffs or Port Macquarie. And it’s well-serviced.”

He said Scotts Head remained the premium pocket.

“It has higher price points,” Pinder said.

“But in the last 12 months there have only been around 16 transactions there.”

By contrast, activity in the main centres has been steady.

“Of 100 sales in the valley, 60 percent would be in Nambucca and 30 percent in Macksville. Scotts Head makes up the other 10 percent,” Pinder said.

Market stabilises after pandemic boom Like Coffs Harbour, the Nambucca region saw sharp price growth in late 2021 and early 2022 before experiencing a correction.

Sawtell Real Estate agent Matt France said the North Coast experienced a clear pattern.

“2015 was a big growth year,” he said.

“Then late 2021 through early 2022 was huge when we saw a 3035 per cent rise in values.”

The slowdown that followed, driven largely by tougher lending conditions, has now reversed.

“Whatever shortfall we had in the last two years has definitely been recovered over the last three months,” France said.

“The market is powering along to finish the year.”

He expects momentum to return quickly after the festive break.

“I think everything will ramp back up from mid-January,” he said.

“There will be strength at that time, but any talk of a February interest-rate rise might put a pull on certain things.”

Low stock, high demand and the under-$1m surge The sub-$1 million market across the North Coast continues to dominate buyer activity, fuelled by tight supply and rising competition.

Chris Hines, managing director of Unrealestate in Coffs Harbour, said the pattern was regionwide.

“Anything under a million is very, very busy,” he said.

“There’s low stock and high demand.

“If we get a property between $750,000 and $900,000, there are multiple offers coming in.”

Hines said the entire coastal corridor has undergone a price identity shift.

“Years ago, there weren’t many million-dollar listings in Coffs,” he said.

“Now it seems to be the vast majority.”

Who is buying in the region?

Pinder said the buyer mix reflects both affordability and lifestyle demand.

“It’s a mix of people from the Coffs region and those relocating from pockets of Sydney, the Central Coast and the Tablelands,” he said.

During the pandemic surge, many out-of-towners moved early on retirement plans or relocated for lifestyle reasons.

France said that movement has since levelled into a broader demographic spread.

“Back then, it was a mass migration of people out of cities,” he said.

“Now it’s fairly split between locals, people from the Tablelands, and those moving from Sydney and Canberra.”

Further north along the coast, Jensen Realty director Mark Jensen has seen another strong buyer trend: Melbourne families relocating for a better coastal lifestyle.

“They’ve been the number one buyer, followed by Sydney and Brisbane,” he said.

Future movers and premium pockets While Scotts Head commands the valley’s strongest price points, Pinder said Nambucca Heads and Macksville continue to deliver most of the region’s activity and value.

France said nearby areas like Toormina show how buyers increasingly look for well-serviced suburbs with room to grow.

“There’s undervalued property there,” he said.

“You’re close to the shopping centre, the airport, a few minutes to the beach and 10 minutes to town.

“Prices have jumped, but there’s still room to move.”

Outlook for 2026: Firm but interest-rate dependent All three agents expect the local market to remain stable next year, with performance largely shaped by interest-rate decisions.

“If rates pause, it’ll squeeze the market a little, but overall the outlook is positive,” Pinder said.

“We live in a beautiful part of the world, services are strong, and who wouldn’t want to live here?”

Hines said supply and demand would continue driving momentum, while France expects early-year strength before any interest-rate decisions influence the market.

Writers sign off on 2025

THE Nambucca Valley Writers’ Group, a mentoring club for writers of the region, held its final 2025 meet-up and Christmas party in Urunga in late November.

The group has had a history of supporting successful writers since its inception 35 years ago.

Among its life members are Carrolline Rhodes and Roby Aitken, local authors with multiple successful tomes among them.

The group meets monthly on the third Saturday of the month at the fire-station in Nambucca Heads and meetings usually take the form of discussion and presentation of a piece of writing each of the attendees has prepared in advance.

“We get given homework,” Diane Curran, a long-time member of the group, told NOTA. “Usually it is limited to around 500 words and may be poetry or a narrative around a topic that we were given at the last meeting,” she explained.

Two of the attendees at the Christmas party, Chris Heinicke and Rachel Burns, have recently released books.

Based in Coffs Harbour, Chris travels down to Nambucca to attend meetings and has selfpublished 17 books to date with a co-author from Canada.

His books fit into the genre of science fiction/horror with his most recent novel

telling the tale of a giant bio-engineered spider which brings terror to the small South Australian town of Hahndorf.

Chris sells his books at markets around the region including the Harbourside Markets in Coffs Harbour.

Rachel worked with the Nambucca Historical Museum to publish her latest book, “Nambucca Stories”, several months ago.

After a print run of 350 books, it is currently sold out across most outlets.

The group’s youngest member, Sohma, 25, told NOTA she is currently editing her first novel, which is already in excess of 100,000 words.

“It’s a story along Greek mythology lines so I have learnt a lot about the individual gods and goddesses and what they represent,” she said.

“It’s a bit like Percy Jackson but aimed at a slightly older age group,” she added.

The meetings are very supportive, and members resist the urge to criticise other writers in the group, Diane explained.

The writers’ group has also released several anthologies of its best pieces over the past three decades, the latest in 2022 entitled ‘33 in 22’.

“Some of us write poetry, for some its short stories and others write books but our meetings help us to hone our craft and encourage each other on the publishing journey,” Diane said.

A MINISTERIAL Direction will require NSW Government agencies to take stronger action to address modern slavery risks.

Minister for Domestic Manufacturing and Government Procurement Courtney Houssos has directed all NSW Government agencies to include modern slavery tender clauses in procurement categories identified as ‘high risk’.

The change will come into effect in January, with a six month transition period.

This means that any supplier bidding for high-risk government contracts will need to clearly demonstrate the steps they are taking to prevent modern slavery in their operations and supply chains.

Veterans Wellbeing Centre now open in Coffs

THE Coffs Coast Veterans Wellbeing Centre (CCVWC) has moved into a new home on Vernon Street, Coffs Harbour, on the ground floor of the CODA apartment complex.

The CCVWC is the northern hub of the Veterans Wellbeing Network (VWN) which has operated out of the Legacy Opportunity Shop in Scarba Street for the past ten years.

“The Centre’s mission is to support transitioning Defence Force personnel, veterans and their families across the Mid North Coast, while first responders are also welcome,” CCVWC SubCommittee member Richard Kelloway told News Of The Area.

“Promoting wellbeing, resilience and self-sufficiency is its objective.

“It would not have been created without the great support of C.ex Coffs.”

The VWN evolved over a ten-year period as volunteer advocates came together

from eleven different exservice organisations to collaboratively provide wellbeing support.

“Advocates from the RSL and Legacy join others from the Vietnam Veterans, Submariners, Naval, Air Force, and PeacemakerPeacekeeper Associations,” Mr Kelloway said.

The new CCVWC features a home-like environment.

“Designed and furnished professionally, it is roomy, comfortable, safe and

private,” Mr Kelloway said.

Large 55-inch TV screens in three rooms allow for family or groups of eight to videoconference with health and other service providers, or distant family and friends.

An IT kiosk with three booths offers secure internet connections.

“You will find carpet and curtains, a comfortable couch and a Nespresso coffee while you discuss your needs with an advocate,” Mr Kelloway said.

The branch has been awarded $17,040 and $2,500 respectively from the Federal Government’s Stronger Communities and Volunteer Grants programs.

The $17,040 from the Stronger Communities Grant has helped the branch address these issues.

“We now have vents throughout the building and mould resistant paint, and two air conditioning units will be installed soon to ensure everyone attending the hall is comfortable,” Ms Saunders said.

“Plus, we were able to purchase a Smart TV that will allow us to link into State and District meetings as well as professionally display presentations here at the Hall.”

HSC ‘one step, not an end point’

Ms Hone said academic scores lose relevance over time.

“Once you’ve been out of school for six years, no one asks what your score was.

“It doesn’t stick with you, it’s not something you wear forever.”

The career’s advisor encourages students to view their results as part of a longer process.

Universities and employers value skills, experience, and persistence alongside academic performance.

HSC RESULTS

WITH Year 12 students having received their HSC results on Thursday 18 December, it’s an important time to remind students that final scores don’t determine long term success.

Experienced careers advisor Liza Hone said results represent one step, not an end point.

“Your result isn’t everything.

“If you really have a goal and believe you can do it, there are ways of getting there,” Ms Hone said.

She reminded students that strong results may make course entry easier but they are not the only pathway.

“I used to say medicine and law were exceptions, but

She was promoted to Senior Research Fellow in 1992, Principal Research Fellow in 1996, Director in 2000, and Executive Director in 2003.

After decades of leadership, she recently stepped down from her executive role to focus exclusively on leading her research team, continuing her lifelong commitment to finding cures for children with cancer.

“If you really want it, there’s almost always a way, alternate entry programs, bridging courses, or experience based applications.”

Ms Hone advised that students can use several pathways to reach their goals.

These included alternate entry programs that lead into degrees, bridging courses that meet prerequisites, and experience based applications supported by work or volunteering.

“Be willing to take other steps.

“It might be a more circuitous path, but you can still get there.”

She also encourages flexibility.

Other standout achievers include Ruby McNally, who earned Band 6s in Mathematics Standard 2 and Visual Arts. Ruby will be commencing a Fine Arts degree at the University of New South Wales in 2026. Brayden Clark and Noah Lockyer both achieved Band 6s in Mathematics Standard 2 and have ambitious career goals in medicine and teaching, respectively. Visual Arts student Josie Boxsell also secured a Band 6 and plans to take a gap year before beginning a Bachelor of Nursing at Charles Sturt University’s Port Macquarie campus.

Macksville High School also reported above state average scores in seven subjects, including Biology, Community and Family Studies, Construction, English Standard 2, Hospitality, Mathematics Standard 2, and Visual Arts.

Funding for sports stars

THE latest round of ColemanSmith Foundation funding has been awarded to emerging athletes Lilly Darlington and Wolfe Hudson.

The Foundation aims to provide modest funds to young people in the Stuarts Point and Eungai areas who have exceptional sporting ability.

Foundation Chairperson Nicky Smith attended the Stuarts Point Workers Recreation and Bowls Club on Friday, 28 November for the presentations.

She said 12-year-old Lilly had an “amazing year of sporting achievements”, particularly in school sport.

“In the past 12 months, Lilly has competed at state level twice,” she said.

“In March she competed in the

State Athletics Championships at Olympic Park for Little Athletics where she competed in long jump and the 400m sprint, in which she ran a personal best and came 19th overall.

“In October Lilly competed in the schools state championships at Sydney Olympic Park as part of the North Coast team, where she performed strongly across all her events including long jump.

“Lilly achieved a new personal best (PB) of 4.17m (up from 3.97m) and placed 18th out of 39.

“In the high jump, she cleared 1.30m and placed 19th out of 40 competitors and, in the 200m sprint, again a new PB and finished 17th out of 40 competitors.”

Lilly has also attended Centre of Excellence holiday camps in Sydney, one in April and another in October, for athletes 10-14 years of age.

Wolfe Hudson, 16, has been playing soccer since he was five years old.

“Wolfe has been playing in the National Premier Youth League since he was 11 and we provided him with funding the first time around when he was 12,” Nicky said.

“More recently Wolfe was selected to attend the George Cowie National Camp.

“Players who do well in this camp are invited to participate in the UK development tour with the West Ham Academy.

“The tour involves giving talented youth players from Australia a chance to train under West Ham coaches, experience professional training and club culture, play exhibition/tour matches, and be immersed in an elite-academy environment.”

THREE surfers and shark attack survivors are leading the call for the roll out of life-saving emergency response kits on beaches across Australia.

One year after creating Community Shark Bite Kits, founder Danny Schouten has deployed more than 150 kits on beaches across NSW, Queensland, South Australia and Western Australia.

“We’re not going to stop doing what we love, so we just have to be better prepared,” he said.

“When a shark attack happens, every second counts.”

The importance of the kits was evident following the recent death of a Swiss woman and the mauling

of her partner, while swimming off Kylies Beach in Crowdy Bay National Park.

The man was saved by a passer-by who applied a makeshift tourniquet.

Permanent kits were about to be installed on the beach.

“A Shark Bite Kit provides tools that can help control bleeding and hopefully increase someone’s chance of survival,” Danny said.

“With the support of communities and donors, we can get Shark Bite Kits on every beach around the country.

“It’s about Australian beaches being well-prepared for when these attacks happen and making our coastline a safer place for everyone.”

shark attack survivors Toby Begg and Kai McKenzie, whose traumatic experiences on Port Macquarie beaches last year inspired the kits, are supporting his campaign.

“Shark Bite Kits are important because they have the potential to be life-saving specifically to stop massive bleeding until emergency help arrives,” Toby said.

Kai McKenzie added, “The Shark Bite Kits are a great idea that could really save someone’s life.”

Medical equipment specialists TacMed supply the contents, which include a tourniquet, two conforming bandages, two large dressings, an emergency thermal blanket, gloves, a whistle and step-by-step instructions on how to treat a shark bite.

All-Australian selection Nambucca Bowls Report

CAMBRIDGE McCormick has proven herself to be one of the top female Australian Rules players in the country.

The GWS Giants defender and former AFL North Coast player was named in this year’s AFLW AllAustralian team, with selection in the Half Back line.

The former Port Macquarie Magpies star had a stellar season for the Giants, leading all key metrics for inside 50s, tackles, and disposals, while also finishing second in metres gained.

Before entering the AFLW, McCormick won the AFL North Coast best and fairest award and best player of the grand final in each of the first two years of the women’s competition.

Her excellence in the formative

years of the competition saw the women’s best and fairest award named the Cambridge McCormick Medal.

The All-Australian debutant highlighted the importance of the AFL North Coast women’s competition in her playing career.

“The start of the women’s league in 2018 is a highlight of my footy career, alongside winning the premiership with the Magpies in 2019.

“The support I received from Matt Crawley, Paul Taylor and the wider AFL North Coast and Port Macquarie Magpies community is a testament to the dedication of the game and the Magpies to create a pathway for women and girls to make it to the elite level,” she said.

The 27-year-old has played 35 games for the GWS Giants since making her debut in 2022.

QUEENSLAND number plates hitched with No.8 fencing wire to vehicles where indicator use is optional packed the carpark at the Nambucca Heads Island Golf Course.

Little panel damage was reported as golfers from far and wide made a beeline for the couch fairways and bent grass greens on one of the NSW North Coast's best championship layouts.

The scroll of explorers included those from Bonnie Doon, Bexley, Singleton, Bankstown, Breakers, Brighton Lakes, Bayview, Brisbane, Bargara, Maryborough, Tamborine Mountain, Longyard and Emerald Downs.

Good things come in little chirpy packages as the can-play 10-marker Graham Weary capped a big 2025 with 41 points to sweep the Kempsey Toyota medley stableford Div 1 on Saturday, 27 December.

"I hit it really solid, and when I missed a green I was able to chip it close and save par," said Weary, who

People who work away from home find it very difficult to grasp the work from home concept. They equate home with Netflix at the highest volume level possible, long, meandering lunches, booming music, concerns around a bare pantry, and conversations that somehow fail to recognise that you're working on a laptop.

They cannot grasp that you're not snavelling post-Christmas sales, but instead immersing yourself in tasks requiring

access to your already-diminished concentration levels, since your brain is suffering from the gut-brain disconnect that manifests after a mountain of rum balls and ham done 10 ways.

You can't expect to be able to work effectively from home with visitors. It's like trying to write a will in a shopping centre food court. In the end, you just leave a bequest of $500,000 to the lady wiping down the tables, because she's the only one being helpful (and quiet).

There are a few ways around it and I'd try any or all of these: 1. Let guests know that your festive period ends at a set date (say, Boxing Day) and you will be working from home from that point. They can stay, but you won't be available between the hours of 9am-5pm (unless they want to bring you a plate of food at midday or an afternoon cuppa).

2. Wear noise-cancelling headphones. Ignored often enough, a guest becomes a bit like a stray dog. They either leave the premises or dig holes in the backyard (suggest the insertion of

some plants to make this worthwhile).

3. Have a set work area and stipulate that when you are in that room, you are at work. You can't work effectively in the lounge or dining room with guests. It just doesn't work.

4. Go to a different location -- perhaps the local library or a park. There may be noise, but it won't require a response from you.

I hope this assists, Norman.

Perhaps if none of these strategies work, you can rotate between the workplaces of your guests when they return to work.

I'm confident that Gerard from the local council's executive team will get the message when his PowerPoint presentation is interrupted 17 times as you interject with queries about where he keeps the spare toilet paper, what is on the menu for lunch, the location of his Ryobi multi-tool, and so on.

THE NSW Government has completed its first comprehensive statewide koala survey.

It says it provides the most accurate picture to date of where koalas live and how populations are distributed across the state.

Using new tools such as heatdetecting drones and acoustic recorders, scientists surveyed more than 1,000 locations across national parks, state forests and private land.

The government says the updated estimate of 274,000

koalas reflects “improved technology and more extensive survey work”.

Previous estimates of NSW’s koala populations were conducted through more traditional survey methods such as visual sightings and scat analysis.

The NSW population estimate is in line with the recently released National Koala Monitoring Program, led by the Australian Government in partnership with the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation

(CSIRO).

Minister for Climate Change and the Environment Penny Sharpe said, “This survey gives us a clearer understanding of where koalas remain in NSW. “It is an important tool to guide conservation decisions.

“The Minns Labor Government has a strong record on koala conservation, and this survey shows we have been making the right decisions to ensure their survival.”

By Aiden BURGESS AFL North Coast’s top junior players have been selected into Sydney Swans Academy squads for 2026.

A record number of 52 players from the region were selected to the squads, bettering the 45 players chosen in 2024.

The QBE Sydney Swans Academy exists to increase the number of players in NSW who have expert AFL knowledge and high-level skills.

Established in 2010, the Academy has nurtured and developed a number of elite AFLlevel players, but also made a significant contribution to the growth and strength of the code in NSW. The Academy provides a professional, age-appropriate development program for males and females aged 11 to 19, and each year the Academy trains up to 700 players.

Following the March 2021, February 2022 and June 2022 severe storms and flooding, the Nambucca Valley Local Government Area (LGA) received Natural Disaster Declarations resulting in the State and Commonwealth providing funding support to help with the cost of cleaning up and restoring damaged road and essential public assets.

The majority of Council’s road network has been impacted to some extent, which has resulted in an unprecedented amount of repairs to undertake. Council is aware there are numerous potholes, corrugations and gravel loss on some roads.

• Council has recorded 67 significant landslip events that will require remediation through the LGA, with an estimated repair cost in the order of $40million and further information is available on landslip damages via an interactive map located on Council’s website by following the Disaster Recovery link.

WHATS ON golden sands tavern

EMERGING Yarrahapinni surf star Avalon Vowels has done the region proud with a strong showing at the Australian Junior Surfing Titles, held in Wollongong from 27 November to 5 December.

To qualify for the national-level tournament, Avalon first needed to place either first or second in regional titles, then make it to the top eight in state titles.

At nationals, she competed against the top eight surfers in the U/18 girls division from every state in Australia.

“I surfed four rounds and made it to the quarterfinals, placing fifth in Australia overall,” she said.

“Next on my schedule will be putting my head down and training, staying committed to my surfing and schoolwork, and getting ready to kick off next year.”
