NewsNow ready to roll with updated carrier force

Building on the excellent response from November 2024, NewsNow has developed a great team to deliver your local news during the pending strike by Canada Post carriers.

“With no movement in negotiations at all, we have been going full speed ahead to be ready for next week, May 22, as the report from the Industrial Inquiry Commission is expected this week and a work stoppage announcement is expected soon after,” said NewsNow publisher Mike Williscraft.

“The last thing we would want is to put an edition together and

notified a second stoppage would be likely, so to be prepared for a reboot.

“In addition to having a strong uptake on carriers re-upping, we have been agressively seeking carriers in any down areas by circulating flyers specific to those spots. We get a carrier in 80 per cent of those spots as a result,” said Williscraft.

DRIVERS WANTED

The carrier roster across Niagara West is 80 per cent full with details to be worked out with many more who have inquired over the next week. Smithville is fully covered with only about

took most of every Wednesday each week. As we can see this stoppage going on for a long time, we want to plan to have drivers in place to free up our time to do all the other things we need to do,” said Williscraft.

Anyone interested can call Catherine at 289-235-9500 or email: catherine@wn3.ca

Catherine can provide details on timing and the scope of the job at that time.

“The difference is, this time, we have told all the carriers who have signed on that this change could be permanent,” said Williscraft.

“The inconsistency of Canada Post has made us look at bringing this all in-house as we have done in the past. It would be done different - no plastic bags to be environmentally and nuisance conscious - and we would employ street pick-up boxes as well,” said Williscraft.

Driver are responsible for dropping the correct amount to papers to each house in a dry, secure location arranged with each carrier.

Pay varies on the number of drops involved.

Grimsby horror author at library May 15

A Grimsby writer is making his mark in the world of horror. Resident and new author Stephen Clothier will be speaking at the Grimsby Public Library about Dreamstalker, his debut novel, on May 15. The book tells the story of seven-yearold Michael, who experiences horrific nightmares after he and his parents move to a new home.

After contacting a Jewish medium, the family learns their home was the site of grisly child murders and must contend with the impact it’s

having on their son.

“I myself had a recurring dream of being disturbed,” said Clothier, who holds a Master’s degree in classical languages and literature.

Clothier said he began experiencing nightmares after moving into a new home in Hamilton when he was about four-years-old.

He described himself as being haunted by a “faceless, formless boogeyman” living in the basement.

Clothier is a lucid dreamer, meaning he is aware of his dreams and can impact decisions made within them.

Clothier said he was always able to escape his tormentor by hiding under the family’s dining room table.

“If I could scramble under the dining room table in our house and blink twice, I could wake myself up,” he said.

Clothier’s talk at the library starts at 7 p.m. on the 15th. Register at the library’s website.

Fantastic retirement by the book

Longtime Grimsby resident Eleanor Redding has pivoted out of retirement and into the book world.

It started quite by accident when the retired high school teacher heard about a man in Alberta, a retired accountant, who took up the life of a real cowboy.

Adventure it turned out was waiting to be embraced and when word got out that Redding was taking notes, stories poured in from retirees around the world. These folks were not rocking on the front porch and the result has been 13 books all written under the pen name Eleanor Rose.

It started when Redding went to the internet to find books on successful ‘great’ retirement. She found finance, how to plan, and a plethora of health advice.

But none of her friends were sitting around talking about their health. “None of us are in health disas-

ter and all basically are having a blast.” Grateful to be sure, but it was all the more reason to search out stories of others who were living life to the fullest. As a teacher who taught senior students about compound interest, it was an easy extrapolation. “You either worked and saved or you didn’t.” Redding was looking for more and after extensive research and a flood of emails from around the world, soon had enough story material to publish the books brimming with the sage, the sophic and the savvy for success-

ful retirement.

“If you’re living a hohum retirement, hopefully the books will foster ideas of what you can do because there are enough people out there doing terriifc things.”

Forget the ‘how to’ books, these are ‘why not’ books.

“My mandate highlights positive retirement, from travel, romance, finances, etc., showcasing seniors who are enjoying life to the fullest.” Redding is showcasing fabulous retirees, all over the world, who are active, interesting and out there doing their thing. Books titles cover a wide range of topics from the ‘12 Practical Steps to a Fantastic Retirement’ and ‘Retirement Sex Therapy,’ to Retirees Write for Internet Profit, ‘The Fantastic Ice Cream Diet, and Live a Lot Longer and Live Well. They are written from intensive research and practical, truthful and entertaining emails sent from retirees around the world.

It’s been a steep tra-

jectory and learning curve for the retired teacher turned author. Overcoming digital ineptness, including website design, uploading to YouTube, using AI (Artificial Intelligence), “I’ve been on YouTube university for two years now and learning how with (the indispensable) Louisa.”

Whatever the issue, “she’ll figure it out.”

Self-published, the books are on sale on Amazon. Check out Redding’s YouTube channel for a taste of the wit and wisdom waiting in the books. Be sure to add Eleanor Rose to any of your YouTube title searches. Check out the website: FantasticRetirement.com and the YouTube channel also titled Fantastic Retirement, or the Saturday morning Chillax, that can feature anything from a joke, to an unbelievable retirement story, an exposé, a sweet tidbit or any combination all connected to retirement.

First, thanks again to the nearly 200 helpers who delivered NewsNow for us during the November/December Canada Post strike.

In May, just two months away, there is a likelihood of another work stoppage as negotiations have gone nowhere. So, to all those who helped before, we will be reaching out to confirm if you will be interested in helping out again. As well, we are looking to fill out all our carrier routes with an eye to setting up a permanent delivery system. This does not mean anyone who helps out in May needs to be permanent themselves. No doubt we will need dozen of carriers to help in the short-term while we seek permanent ones. Simply, papers will get delivered to your home every Wednesday morning for delivery by Thursdays at 7 p.m. Carriers may also receive our ClubWest Magazine or other special publications - for which they will be paid extra. Flyers could also be part of the mix, but first things first. We don’t want to get ahead of ourselves. Please email catherine@wn3.ca to get on the list or if you have any more questions.

In Loving Memory of HOLT, Nina Marie (née Oleyarchuk)

April 4, 1944 - May 9, 2025

It is with deep love and remembrance that we announce the peaceful passing of Nina Holt, born Nina Marie Oleyarchuk, on May 9, 2025, in Beamsville, Ontario, at the age of 81.

Born on April 4, 1944, in Arvida, Quebec, Nina lived a life marked by intellectual curiosity, professional excellence, and a quiet strength that left a lasting impression on all who knew her. She was an independent woman who pursued her passion for justice by earning a law degree from the University of Ottawa, subsequently building a distinguished legal career practicing law in Ontario and Alberta. Nina was known among her colleagues and friends for her integrity and sharp mind.

After a fulfilling career, she retired to Grimsby, Ontario, where she embraced a slower pace of life, enjoying the simple pleasures and the beauty of the Niagara region. She was an avid reader and animal lover.

Nina is lovingly remembered by her brother, her cherished niece and nephew, and several grandnieces and grandnephews who brought her great joy. Her thoughtful nature and quick wit will be dearly missed but fondly remembered.

A private family gathering will be held to honor her life. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to a charity of your choice in Nina’s memory.

Her journey on this earth has ended, but the impact of her kindness, wisdom, and grace will endure.

BIJAKOWSKI, Edmund

September 23, 1941 - May 9, 2025

Ed Bijakowski passed away at home on May 9th, 2025.

Ed will be forever missed by his wife Pat, sons Desi (Sue), and Steve (Marta); stepchildren Bill Whyte, and Cindy DeMan (Joe); and his brother Henry. Grandpa to Karli, Mitchell, Marina, and Olivia. Also remembered by nieces and nephews. The best husband, father, and grandfather in the world.

After moving to Vineland in his late teens, Ed enjoyed many years working alongside his parents (Mary & Frank) and brother (Henry) on the family farm. Carefully tending to young fruit trees was one of Ed’s favourite jobs on the farm, and he continued to use his talents to help local farmers with young orchards well into his retirement. Winters were spent with the department of highways helping to keep roads safe, and it was at this time that Ed rediscovered his passion for music, playing the violin and connecting with other musicians. Ed continued to have a long relationship with music and enjoyed playing the fiddle with many groups for dances, concerts, summer festivals and jam sessions. Ed was always happy to share the joy of music with others. In later life, Ed ran the service station in Vineland and was a great boss to many young employees. I still hear from those who worked for him, and they so appreciated him at that time of their lives. Ed enjoyed the social aspect of this job and getting to know all the people and families in his town.

Thank you to all who kept in touch while we were on this journey, and many thanks to Dr. DePetrillo, the first responders, and the palliative care team.

Canada Post situation takes priority

There are several important issues which needed to be dealt with this week, but since Canada Post is going to go on strike again later this month, I want all our readers to be right up to speed on what we have in the works.

Mainly, we’ve been hard at work developing an updated carrier roster and this has gone very well.

nience so each community will have a spot where they can pick up a copy of the paper at any time.

But that is secondary at this point.

Right now, we are back in do-what-you-have-to-doto-survive mode.

I fully respect the posties right to strike but I think their union is out to lunch with its asks on this one.

More info needed for market request

A bit of an addendum to the information on the facing page regarding a requested deferral of support for Grimsby’s Farmers’ Market; the request, says its author Shane Weaver, is not an indication of opposition to the market, rather, a recognition that several points in the application process are missing.

Granted, there are other issues involved but much of the information should be released to the Business Improvement Area board as part of its consideration and the general public, really. Will be interesting to see how it gets dealt with this week. M.W.

We attacked it differently this time as we expect a long work stoppage andas a result - we will continue with our own delivery system even when the strike is resolved.

Incidental to what we do, I expect a LONG strike.

The union has shown no signs of movement, none, and management knows full well the existing business model is untenable as a viable operation.

Translation: 55,000 carriers could strike themselves right out of a gig.

With us, we are picking up right where we left off in January and then some.

We have a great network of supportive businesses who are letting us drop copies every Wednesday. These will help a great deal with convenience and immediate availability, so we thank them profusely.

As I noted in the Page 3 story, we have just a handful or routes still remaining to be filled. If your home receives one of those small flyers seeking a carrier for a given area over the next couple of days, that means that route is still down. So, call Catherine at 289-2359500 if interested.

A couple of weeks ago it was noted in this space we will also be untilizing street box pick up at some point to allow for added conve-

There is no way management of any corporation with a recent track record of Canada Post could roll over for all the demands made to date, so we expect this to be a long, painful situation for many across the country.

For us, we’ve done all we can do to date and are very happy with the results. Yes, it is a ton more work and organizing, but we know it will go wellsomething we hoped for last time (and it went bestcase scenario), so this time we are very confident in our plan.

If there is a store or location you think would make a good drop to make it convenient for other readers to pick up a copy of the paper, just let us know. We would rather have too many than have anyone miss out for any reason.

For us, the best thing about this go round is it’s May - much warmer than December/January to be traipsing about the country side doing the paper drops, and for carriers going to the door.

MIKE WILLISCRAFT
Delivered via Canada Post

Grimsby business operator Shane Weaver has asked the Business Improvement Area board to defer its endorsement of the Farmers’ Market pending several conditions and disclosures.

In a submission to the board on May 12, Weaver - who operates Griffin MMA - said there are several pieces of information he believes outstanding, among them:

• A complete and approved special event application;

• Valid road closure and occupancy permits;

• A certificate of insurance naming impacted downtown businesses;

• Disclosure of the market’s board of directors and proof of ONCA compliance, and;

• A formal conflict of interest declaration from Michelle Seaborn.

Weaver also says a BIA endorsement would contravene a bylaw which states the board would not endorse political figures or groups in which the have a vested interest.

The board was expected to deal with the letter Wednesday, May 14, at its board meeting.
