A successful Fantasy of Trees wraps for 2025

By Jessica Barton For NewsNow The Fantasy of Trees has come and gone, and The Grimsby Rotary Club is celebrating a successful year with great attendance and fundraising results.

Joan Whitson, Rotary president, said. “The community loves this event, they get excited and wish that they get a tree. It’s always fun to see the kids come and put their tickets in all the different trees.”

Kerry Vandermolen, the event lead, noted what makes the event special to her.

McNally House Is Like Going Home to Your Grandparents’ House

By Rosemary Addison Jayne North’s grandson, aged three, knew what to do when he came to visit Nana at McNally House Hospice.

First, he found “his” little yellow slippers in the big basket. Warmly greeted by the volunteers, he and his sisters visited the kitchen for homemade cookies or a popsicle before going to Nana’s room. On special days, beautiful hymns were sung by Jayne’s six brothers, harmony so wonderful that another McNally resident thought there was a concert taking place.

With Jayne’s decision to be admitted to McNally House, the family no longer needed to be caregivers. They could

The North Family be a family, share food, sing, pray. Her physical, emotional and spiritual needs were met. The care and compassion that were given to Jayne and her family were precious gifts.

Neither she, nor her family,

ever thought they were an inconvenience. Everyone was embraced by love.

Jayne, a private person, had wonderful conversations with staff and volunteers. She felt at home, safe and comfortable.

People sometimes think that being admitted to a hospice is giving up hope.

Jayne’s family are emphatic that this is the exact opposite. Hospice is filled with hope, filled with life.

In a book of devotions that Jayne and her family read often, there is a prayer titled, “For one who lingers in a long dying”.

Jayne’s husband, Bob, feels that McNally helped Jayne live longer. Longer to be with her family, to hear the music she loved, to focus on the hope of new life that was so much a part of her faith.

The North’s advice for people who are given the option of hospice care: “Don’t wait so long.” McNally House is a place of life, filled with compassion.

All residents live out the end of their journey with respect and dignity.

After Jayne died, her young grandson was gifted the little yellow slippers, forever his, from the place that was like, “going home to your grandparents’ house”, a place where his Nana and his family were, and always will be, cherished.

Government funding covers only 44% of our operating costs. Each year, more than $1.8 million must be raised to ensure our hospice residents and programs remain available to our community.

Description of Property 2818 Prince William Street is the former Jordan Train Station, a wooden railway building now used as a residence. Situated in the centre of Jordan Station in the Town of Lincoln, the structure originally functioned as a key stop on the Grand Trunk Railway line, later part of Canadian National Railway linking Hamilton, St. Catharines, and Niagara Falls.

Historical Value The station holds significant historical value for its association with the growth of regional railways and their impact on rural Ontario communities. As a hub for passengers, freight, and mail, it played a central role in Jordan Station’s transformation into a thriving agricultural shipping centre. The railway allowed local fruit and produce growers to reach wider markets, stimulating both population and economic growth. The station remains an important physical reminder of how rail transportation shaped small communities across Niagara and Ontario.

Friends visited with the family on Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at SMITHVILLE CANADIAN REFORMED CHURCH, 330 Station Street, Smithville where the Memorial Service was held on Saturday, November 29, 2025 at 11 a.m., Rev. John VanWoudenberg officiated. Interment took place at Lane’s Cemetery, St. Anns.

Special thanks to all the caregivers who helped Bill through his illness and final days.

Brian Cranley, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully in Grimsby, Ontario, on December 6, 2025. He was 80 years old.

Born on August 20, 1945, in Chicago, Illinois, Brian was the youngest son of Anna Mae and Edward Cranley. Even in his earliest years, he stood out for his athletic ability, sharp mind, and quiet determination—qualities he carried throughout his life. At Saint Bede Academy, he excelled as both an athlete and an academic, laying a foundation for the curiosity and discipline that would define him. In 1963, Brian moved to Canada to attend the University of Toronto, where he continued to grow as a bright and inquisitive student. What began as an academic pursuit soon became a lifelong commitment to building a home, a family, and a future in the country he came to cherish. Brian met the love of his life, Priscilla, in 1973. Together they built a warm, lively, and adventurous life in Toronto. They welcomed their son Evan in 1975 and their daughter Nora in 1978. Their family later found a sacred refuge at their cottage on Heck Lake in the Lake of Bays, a place that became central to Brian’s joy, peace, and sense of belonging. It was there he watched birds, read voraciously, savored nature, and celebrated countless milestones with the people he loved most. Brian’s professional life was defined by creativity, adaptability, and an appreciation for the world around him. He began his career as a graphic designer, eventually founding and running his own design company. Later, he brought his skills and thoughtful approach to his work with the Ontario Provincial Government. In the final chapter of his working life, Brian returned to the outdoors he had always loved, building a meaningful second career in landscaping—work that grounded him and suited his appreciation for nature, detail, and quiet beauty. A natural teacher and an endlessly patient mentor, Brian devoted many years to coaching. He led a youth baseball team to a national championship in 1988, and—despite never learning to skate—served as a committed, steady, and enthusiastic hockey coach in the Swansea Girls Hockey League. His players remember him not only for the skills he taught but for the kindness and encouragement he offered so freely. He enjoyed the Cranley family reunions in Crystal Lake, Illinois, where he reunited with his siblings Edward, Mary, and Kathy, as well as their children and cousins. These summer reunions connected him to his roots and remained an important part of his life. Brian was also an avid birder, a passion that shaped the rhythms of his daily life. He kept meticulous bird-count records, could mimic bird calls with uncanny accuracy, and found deep peace in what he lovingly referred to as the orchestrals of the natural world. In time, this shared love of birding led Brian and Priscilla to leave downtown Toronto and move to the Niagara Escarpment region, where forests, wetlands, and migration paths were just beyond their doorstep. Sitting outside, listening to the birds around him, became one of his most meditative and cherished rituals. Brian and Priscilla embraced a period of remarkable travel and discovery. Together they explored Cuba, Mexico, Hawaii, and the deserts of California and Arizona. It was during these journeys that they fell deeply in love with Mexico City—its food, art, music, culture, and vivid colours. The city became a second home of sorts, a place they returned to year after year, often staying for many months at a time. In his later years, Brian’s devotion to his wife deepened into something profoundly tender. As Priscilla’s health declined, he became her primary caregiver with grace, loyalty, and unwavering love. Their partnership remained a beautiful constant in both of their lives. Above all, Brian was very connected to his children, Evan (Amy) and Nora (Adam), and was a devoted grandfather—known as “B”—to Dashiell, Delphine, Emmett, and Bo. His presence in their lives was gentle, steady, and full of delight. This past August, he celebrated his 80th birthday surrounded by family and close friends at the cottage, eating tacos and peach pie—the simple pleasures that made him happiest. Brian leaves behind a legacy of kindness, dedication, creativity, and love. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. The province’s plan is solid in that they hope to boost local arts and culture and improve the region’s transportation network, aiming to attract 25 million annual visitors and double the region’s tourism impact generating an additional $3 billion for Ontario’s GDP every year.

That is attainable.

Some of the facilities the new program will support include: • Develop a world-class observation wheel in Niagara Falls, similar to those found in other major cities such as London and Las Vegas; • Redevelop the historic Ontario Power Generating Station to create a new guest experience, and; • Revitalize the Niagara Parks Marina at Miller’s Creek into a world-class recreation destination.

These are all in concert with Niagara Parks.

I would submit, as far as Niagara West goes, the plan falls short in one key area; “Develop exciting new at-

tractions and visitor experiences to appeal to new tourists and encourage longer stays.”

And and all tourism-related seminars or education programs will cite as gospel that getting a day-visit to expand to an overnight, multi-day stay is the key to success.

Yes, attractions and events can get people to come for a day, but getting them to stay over and check out multiple stops - or communities takes variety and quality.

Now, when I say any government should look at offering grants for complementary tourism facilities, I do not mean they should just hand out funds they have set aside because it is sitting in an account at Queen’s Park.

But they should be open to one-off projects which could be judged on their merits and, if deemed to be qualified and there is a follow-up plan for utilization of a new facility, it should get special consideration.

For example, Grimsby has had ideas for an outdoor performance stage being bandied about for nearly 25 years, yet there has been no movement.

I’ve seen drawings for an indoor theatre/hall set on the land right across from GBF and just south of Town & Country Fish & Chips. That would be a great draw for downtown. I have also seen an outdoor stage - because I helped plan it - set in the natural amphitheatre at Centennial Park. Now, those are just two ideas. Let’s hear more ideas!
