Happy Birthday, Riley!

Chances are sweating it out in rehab is NOT the way freshly minted 19-year-old Riley Dunda expected to spend his birthday yesterday (Wed.), but he’ll take it just the same. Riley suffered a major stroke May 3. He is assisted with some rehab here by Anthony Ciavarra. Check Page 8 to see how he is doing.

By Stephanie Sisler NewsNow Lincoln residents expressed concerns about the town’s draft Official Plan including red tape, land protection, and public health concerns at a Tuesday night meeting. The Town of Lincoln is currently reviewing updating its Official Plan. The new plan focuses on the importance of agriculture to the community. The updated plan aims to ensure the sustainability of agriculture in the community. Objectives include: • Preparation of policies to support, promote and sustain the farm community in conjunction with the regional value added agriculture study; • Conformity with provincial policies and the regional Official Plan, and; • Preparation of environmental policies to address the

requirements of the greenbelt natural heritage system and how they can be balanced with the primacy of agriculture. The review does not include any expansion of the urban area boundaries. It does focus on building a strong agrifood industry and ensuring vibrant, permanent small towns. Over a dozen residents attended the meeting. A few expressed their concerns to committee. A lack of inclusion regarding health priorities for residents in the plan, as well as constraints and red tape with all three levels of government, plus the Niagara Escarpment Act, Green Belt Act, and conservation authorities were also noted as concerns. Brian Jaworsky also expressed his support for the overall direction of the See PLAN, Page 2

From Page 1 proposed plan and urged council to seek a balance in future planning. “To promote the town as a ‘centre of excellence for agriculture’ is truly a worthy goal,” he said. “Let’s make sure to strike the correct balance between existing urban areas and the continued protection of farmland, all the while respecting the small town feel.” He highlighted a few things he noted during his review of the Official Plan and he came up with the following suggestions: • Best farming practices need clearly defined rules and regulations that town staff will be

able to enforce; • Sustainability and the centre of excellence for agriculture must not be interpreted with the narrow regard that agriculture viability comes at the expense of everything else; • Specialty agriculture will be the biggest boom in Lincoln, and; • The importance of preserving prime agricultural land. “Our water resource protection should be the backbone of everything we do. Water will only get more valuable as time goes on,” Jaworsky said. “Prudhomme’s Landing needs a closer look and needs to be cleaned up to be able to provide a better presentation for both itself and the Town of Lincoln.”

He also suggested the Town look into a Niagara rail system using existing infrastructure, and a bicycle network for healthy living. He would also like to see more public involvement at the municipal level. “Let’s figure out a way to increase general public involvement in this local level of government, which affects more of our incomes, lifestyles and overall general well being,” he said. Other concerns received were about land designation changes possibly devaluing homes and negatively affecting land owners and future land use. Town staff will consider all public comments received.

Antique Show in town this weekend The annual Grimsby Antique Show (GAS) is coming up this weekend! Marnie Taylor Books and Antiques is one of the many interesting vendors you can expect to see at this year’s antique show. She has been attending the show from the beginning. “It’s a friendly community show,” she explained. “The members of the Rotary Club do a good job of organizing it and make the vendors welcome. They are especially help-

ful to sole vendors like myself by assisting with unloading merchandise and providing snacks and breaks.” She sells her books and antiques out of her Niagara-on-theLake home, and also online through abebooks.com. She specializes in first edition modern mystery fiction, but has many other categories as well: history, fiction, special editions, eclectic non-fiction. She also has antiques for sale, mainly china and glass and will be bringing an assort-

ment to the GAS. She is looking forward to this year’s show. “Mainly I will be selling old books, including classic mysteries like Agatha Christie and Ngaio Marsh, as well as books on history, fiction and non-fiction,” she explained. “One interesting item is a colourful child’s book or toy from 1907 in the form of printed cards attached by a rivet at one end. The cards can be fanned out to show on one side a sliced animal book and on the

STEFANIK

other side a Mother Goose A.B.C. Book.” The GAS is Niagara biggest two-day indoor antique show and sale. Tickets are $6 at the gate or $5 with a coupon. Dollar off coupons are available at participating local merchants, the Grimsby Chamber of Commerce and at gasniagara.ca. Children five and under are free. GAS is brought to you by The Rotary Club of Grimsby. For more information visit gasniagara. ca or email info@ gasniagara.ca

I really hate water.... Water is our enemy I used to love water which is why I bought a house at Sunset Bay along the north shore of Lake Erie. Back then water was good. I swam in the lake and sailed on its surface. In the cold of winter I fished through lake ice for perch. Until my knees went creaky, I paddled a canoe through the waters of Algonquin Park for five or six summers in a row. I enjoyed water so much that just for fun I would take two cubes of frozen water and make them float in a glass with Scotch. That was so much fun, sometimes I would do it twice. But then came global warming and extreme weather and water turned on me like it was coming through a hose held by riot police. The year 2013 has just been officially declared as the hottest twelve months in the history of the world. By mid-summer the lake water was no longer cool and refreshing. By August the water was too warm for me to swim in and the algae grew faster than ever, piling up on the beach and rotting. Every day thousands of tons of ice fall into the ocean from the Arctic Ice Shield. That being the world’s air conditioner, the summer can only get more oppressively hot. I was happy to feel the water cool down in the fall and then ... then the Arctic Vortex hit like that iceberg that got in the way of the Titanic. It was like a cruel meteorologist, say

WILLIAM THOMAS Al Roker, forced us all into a big meat freezer at gun point and didn’t let us out until April. It was always twenty something below zero and the wind was 50 and 60 miles-per-hour coming off the lake. Suddenly everything that used to be water became ice including the pipe that runs from my outside cistern into the house. It froze and burst and froze again so I didn’t have water for five months. Late spring when the ground thawed, I was able to install a new and very expensive water pipe and heat line. When I say I had no water, I exaggerate because one day the float on my sump pump broke away and I had lots of water, ten inches of ground water in my basement. The gas pilot light sits five inches off the floor so the furnace blew out as well. No water to drink or wash with, no heat and then a skating rink in the basement My plumber came to my house at least 30 times during that period. One day he showed up when I hadn’t even called him. He said he was experiencing separation anxiety. The last time he was here he See WATER, Page 5

WATER From Page 4 told me his wife gave him an ultimatum: “It’s either me or that guy who hates water! Make up your mind!” He says he’s still thinking about it. When it comes to the Great Lakes, scientists predict that if we don’t stop the wastage and the spillage, some day we will deplete the world’s largest supply of fresh water. I’m all for it. The sooner the better. I hate water. There was so much ice on the lake, in March a fisherman the next bay over drove his ATV one mile out and couldn’t find water. His ice fishing auger only went down three feet! I thought frozen water was my mortal enemy until I watched the Toronto Maple Leafs trying to play hockey on it. Then I didn’t feel so bad. Those guys have reason to hate ice even more than I do! I went to Portugal for a couple of weeks where the weather was uncharacteristically cold and the waves off the Atlantic hammered the coastline and smashed walls that have been there for centuries. In the north an American surfer set a world record by riding a 78-foot monster wave into the coast near Nazaré. A couple weeks later, a plumber

from Devon, England broke that record by two feet. Water, it seemed has followed me to Portugal and it was trying to kill me. I turned on BBC News and the bottom half of England was under water. It rained for three weeks straight, the worst downpour on record since 1915. The Thames River overflowed and if you didn’t have water in your basement it meant you lived in a second floor flat. Water, it seemed was trying to kill all of us, not just me. The winds are stronger, the waves are higher and because of global warming the water in the oceans is rising. If you have not been to Key West, go now while it’s still there. Trust me, water is out to get us. We need to replace it immediately with Kool-Aid or Diet Coke, something that’s not quite so sticky. Or, it may be one big conspiracy engineered by the world’s industrial, military complex. All this has made me fearful and crazy but just because I’m paranoid doesn’t mean water is not out to get me. From now on I plan to avoid all water fresh, salt, distilled, whatever - except for those frozen cubes that pop to the top of scotch in a glass. That’s so much fun!

Canadian Small Business Owners Overwhelmed More and more, Canadian small business owners are becoming overwhelmed and feeling vulnerable because of the Labour Laws and Government Agency regulations. This is a notion to which Kevin Trainor feels every Canadian small business owner can relate. He is the cofounder of FirstCall, a Canadian company providing Human Resource Services to the small business market. And recently, his team worked with Sandy Jaskula – of Teddy’s Food, Fun and Spirits in Grimsby – to assist her with her Health & Safety compliance requirements. “Sandy, like most small business owners, was overwhelmed by the looming deadline of July 1st for the new Health & Safety regulations. She’s a successful restaurant owner – not a Health & Safety expert! Searching online only made things more confusing for her, and the stress levels were increasing. But after one call from us, she was able to get a plan together…and the stress dissipated completely. She and her Manager, Jan, met with their FirstCall HR Manager one week later, and now Health & Safety is no longer a concern for her.” As a small business owner himself, Trainor admits that he always considered HR Departments as ‘nice to have’, rather than ‘need to have’. “I honestly never really understood or appreciated the importance of an HR Specialist. I thought they just took care of hiring and firing for a company. And then I was visited by a Health & Safety Inspector. I was shocked by the list of requirements my company needed to meet…and I really had no idea how to begin to become compliant. That’s when I learned about the vital role Human Resources can play in a small company...an HR Manager could handle all of the compliance issues for me!” That’s why he started FirstCall, he says. “I’m an entrepreneur – my success depends upon me taking risks and being able to move quickly on new ideas. All successful small business owners are the same… they are action and emotion oriented. The downside to that is that they may not dot all the ‘i’s or cross all the ‘t’s…and that can get you into trouble. Large corporations know this, so they employ HR Departments to protect them from fines and lawsuits.” Trainor speaks with conviction and admits he’s on a crusade. “At FirstCall, we want to provide every small business owner in Canada with the same protections and expertise that the large corporations receive from their HR Departments - but we make it available to them for just pennies per day.” He explains that his company provides each of their clients with an HR Manager. “There are over 250,000 unlawful dismissal suits filed in Canada each year. And the majority of those suits are won by the employees, simply because the business owner failed to follow all the rules of the Employment Standards Act. If they had the assistance of an HR Specialist, those numbers would dramatically decrease…THAT’S why FirstCall is in business!”

The life of Riley: By Mike Williscraft NewsNow It is hard to believe that a local teenager suffering a major stroke could be considered a “good news” story. The affliction most certainly is not, but virtually everything else surrounding the trials and tribulatiions of one Riley Dunda could best be categorized as truly remarkable. Saturday, May 3, Riley suffered a major stroke at his family’s Grimsby home. Unconscious, he was rushed to West Lincoln Memorial Hospital, stabilized and transported to Hamilton General immediately. Riley’s father, Richard, said he takes three key things from the whole ordeal: the strength of community around his family is tremendous; Riley himself and support from the hockey community has been phenomenal and inspiring, and; the health system can do wonders. “With something like this you never know how the brain will react or what is going to happen so we know and Riley knows he is very fortunate,” said Richard, noting Riley’s goal pre-May 3 was to improve his skating speed and earn a hockey scholarship. “I thought he worked hard before, but that was nothing. His approach is he is training to play hockey.” Two weeks ago, it was as much of a challenge for Riley to walk 600 metres as it would be for Richard to run a marathon, his Dad added.

“The doctors are really not sure what to think but they do attribute a lot to him being in great shape and his age,” said Richard, noting Riley turned 19 on Wednesday. “He is not using a walker anymore. He is doing sit ups. His arm (which he has only had movement in for about 10 days) has made slower progress. He still has challenges with his speech.” Richard could not say enough good about the medical team treating Riley: Dr. Wes Oczkowski, stroke neurologist, medical director, regional stroke program; Michaela Ferguson, occupational therapist; Marcella Bandi, physiotherapist; Anthony Ciavarra, occupational therapy and physiotherapy assistant; Suzanne Anthony, occupational therapy and physiotherapy assistant; Dr. Brian van Adel, neurologist, lead of neuro-interventional and stroke neurology services, and Dr. Kelvin Ng, stroke fellow. As a small way to show their support for all they have received, the Dunda’s have thrown their support behind a $150,000 fundraising campaign. The #FightRileyFight campaign will benefit Hamilton General’s stroke program, its interventional neuroradiology service and WLMH. Donations can be made at www. hamiltonhealth.ca/FightRileyFight, or by calling 905-522-3863. “By raising money I hope to make sure other patients have more opportunities to reach their own goals,” said Riley.

A major stroke changed Riley Dunda’s life, now he is fighting back

Core strength and range of motion exercises are part of Riley Dunda’s daily workout regimen. Riley and his family are hoping to raise $150,000 to support Hamilton General’s stroke care programs and WLMH. To donate, call 905-522-3863 for details.

Balsa 32 sinks after hitting a reef By Skip Gillham For Newsnow There were ten different ships with “Balsa” names that came to the Great Lakes between 1981 and 1985. The Balsa 32 was one of these vessels and it ended up a casualty. The small, 98 metre long freighter, was built at Akitsu, Japan, in 1984 and came through the Seaway the next year under Panamanian registry. This was later changed to the flag of

Shipwreck Philippines. During its 16-year career, this vessel had four different names and most were under the flag of Panama. It became Marine Dove for International Marine Corp. in 1999 and was wrecked the next year. On Nov. 13, 2000, the vessel hit a reef, 100 nautical miles off Spratly Island, in the South China Sea. The

ship took on a considerable list and the crew of 17 took to the lifeboats just before their vessel slipped off the reef and sank. Marine Dove was carrying a cargo of logs and was on a voyage from Bintulu, Sarawak, Malaysia, to Mawan, Hebei province, China, when it went off course and was wrecked. The crew were adrift for five days until they were spotted and taken aboard another ship for delivery to dry land.

South Lincoln student brings home triple gold at OFSAA Grace Tennant scored three gold medals at OFSAA track and field. The 15-year-old South Lincoln student beat the OFSAA record in shotput with a 12.10 metre throw, shattering the old record of 11.07 m. She was 11 cm off the oldest OFSAA record for discus, with a gold medal throw of 40.67 metres. She took home the gold in javelin with a throw of 38.35 metres. Her coach John Ahlstedt is very proud of her accomplishment. “Only one other

person, in the past 50 years has triple gold-medalled in OFSAA field events,” he said. Her mom Debbie is also super proud. “She went into it knowing she would do well. Her goal was to break records,” she said. “She broke one and missed the discus record by 11 cm.” Grace was very excited about taking home three gold medals. She trains hard, five days a week for an hour and a half each day. She also maintains a 94/95 per cent average at school.

Chrysler’s anniversary party to help Cardozo family Grimsby Chrysler is celebrating Dodge’s 100th anniversary and that is great news for the Cardozo family. Michael Cardozo, 6, of Grimsby was chosen as the beneficiary of the dealership’s anniversary fundraiser next week. From Thursday, June 19 to Saturday, June 21 there will be daily barbecues with picnic tables set up, great Mopar collectibles on display, a fun kids’ station with games and activities as well as great giveaways. A Show and Shine will be held Saturday, June 21 only as a fundraising carwash for Michael. Bring in your car and get a great wash for a donation. Car wash customers also get a free gift with every wash. “Having this community support helps our family through this stressful time,”

to mention painful. In 2012, Michael had his first surgery to attempt to realign his left leg closer to a normal position. This helped to decrease some pain and take some stress off of his knee. By 2013, Michael’s leg length discrepancy was 15 cm, further aggravating his mobility. Last September, he had about four cm of his femur removed in an attempt to shorten his leg thereby increasing his mobility. Last week he had his follow up surgery, and is recovering well. “He’s doing well. He’s in good spirits and will be back to school this week to finish up the year in his wheelchair,” Sarah said, adding that the wheelchair is not permanent, it’s only until he heals. Overall, Michael is doing great. The family would like to thank everyone for their continued support.

held this fundraiser to raise money for a school that they have supported since 2004. Each student from the school body paid for their meal to raise the funds. In addition, the West Niagara Agricultural Society donated money to the cause. The school would like to thank them for their generous gift. In the process, the Grade 8 class learned much about organizing a food extravaganza. They did surveys, estimations and other calculations to determine exactly how much food they should make and how much the whole event would cost. From this, they determined a reasonable price for their meals. Also, the students completed a course on Food Safety and many wrote a test to gain their Food Safety Certification Although the day of the extravaganza was a hectic day for the grade 8 class and the leaders, the event did run fairly smoothly. In the end, the school raised over $800 for Theocentric Christian School in South Africa.

(L to R) Nancy Todd picked up some plants from Deven Wenzel, Irma Wenzel, Zac Wenzel and Samantha Grumett at the plant/yard sale at Christ Our Savior Church on Saturday.

Lincoln rolls out future plan The Town of Lincoln has now spent a couple of evenings rolling out its vision for an economic future in the community. Sounds great. It is hoped that it works. The only advice that can be offered is for the plan and its implementation to not be too singular in its purpose....meaning having a focus on agriculture is great, but there are other irons to be put to fire. A preview of the plan was brought to Lincoln Chamber of Commerce’s board meeting a couple of weeks ago. It was noted by a certain newspaper publisher that it was surprising there was next to nothing in the plan regarding transportation routes, specifically, getting big rigs out of downtown Beamsville, for example. Yes, there is a regional study underway and all, but if the Town does not make is priority, nobody will. M.W.

Some changes you see, others no Some call what we have a democracy. Others call it the result of a voter lethargy epidemic. Chances are very good less than half of you took time out of your busy day today (Thursday) to cast a vote in the provincial election. Yes, there was an election today. Not to disparage the NDP but this has been a two-horse race from the outset. It has been more of a Hatfields and McCoys shootout than an election race as all parties involved think they have more than enough ammunition to shoot holes in the other’s campaign planks. Who wins? Don’t know. My job is not to predict or endorse as some corporate media have done. Newspapers are supposed to be objective and present all sides of political debate in as unbias a manner as possible. And I go to great lengths to do that. It bothered me that I forgot to run candidate headshots all in black and white last week so they would all match. A small detail which I doubt anybody noticed, but I did. In my humble opinion, what we need is government which will make tough choices to get our economic state back on track. It is not unlike private business. Businesses big and small have to make tough choices every day. A bit of a difference is some businesses make tough choices to survive, while others can be ruthless in the name of maxi-

MIKE WILLISCRAFT mizing profit for shareholders....big difference there. The province is looking to maximize anything for a long time. Let’s get the books balanced by someone, anyone, and then let’s worry about where and how we spend. ****** A couple things to which we have had a very pleasant response –– you may have noticed (this week on Page 21) an ad seeking submissions for folks’ walking routes around town. If you have lived in Grimsby for any length of time, this past winter not withstanding, you will have noticed it is a community of walkers. People walk alone, with their special someone, with kids, with their dogs... you name it. Some Sundays, the sidewalks are just as busy as Main Street....and that is saying something. The Grimsby Active Transportation Committee has been busy for a long time working mostly behind the scenes to get some infrastructure and attention to things which

could enhance the feasibility of walking and cycling in the community. Looking to promote some popular walking routes, broken down by the amount of time it takes to walk them, gives non-walkers a good place to start. The whole thing is a good, simple idea. Glad to support it. ****** Another project we are supporting is the Scene Music Festival, a St. Catharines event. While I always put West Niagara first in everything I do with this paper and other publications we will do here, music is an interest which knows no bounds. The two-day event held in various venues in downtown St. Catharines bring together dozens of grassroots musicians just trying to do their thing. I’m NO musician, but I have a great appreciation of those who are willing to hang it all out there in the name of pursuing a dream and that event, both the organizers and performers fit that bill. It is another event of which I am proud to play a very small part. So, just to see who is reading this, we will be conducting a free draw for a pair of weekend passes for the June 28-29 event, value $160 total. All you have to do is go to NewsNow’s facebook page and “like” us. I just want to be liked, people. Seriously, we have really just started getting active online so all our likes are new. ALL likes are in play. Good luck!!

Food crawl support appreciated Dear Editor, We had a long, cold winter this year, and the time passed a little more quickly, with the help of wonderful, comfort food, provided by some local eateries! The Library Fundraising Group of the Our Town/Our Time Capital Campaign would like to thank those businesses, who participated in the “Comfort Food Crawl”, held in February and March. They each gave a portion of the proceeds of the “Lincoln Special”, a dish of their choice, to the Town of Lincoln Community Complex fundraising campaign. Thanks, also, to the many members of the community, who patronized the establishments, and enjoyed these yummy foods: scrumptious seafood stew or steak and

mushroom pie at August Restaurant, luscious lasagna at Your Neighbourhood Pizza Company, savoury Shepherd’s pie at The Butcher and Banker, a most pleasant Pelham sourdough loaf at De La Terre bakery, the delectable doughnut at the Zooma Zooma Resto and Wine Bar, some choice chili at De La Terre Kitchen, and stupendous souvlaki at the Olympia Restaurant! We’re also most grateful to our local newspapers, NewsNow and the Grimsby Lincoln News, for their

help in promoting our event. With everyone’s support, we raised over $1,000! The grand opening of the new Town of Lincoln Community Complex will be happening on Saturday, June 21 from 10-noon. The complex will feature a library, an arena, multi-use community rooms, a walking track, a café, and will serve all residents of Lincoln. Come and see it for yourself. Sincerely, Elizabeth Wagner, Chair Library Fundraising Group

Newsnow E-Edition gets some love! Dear Editor, I love this new online e-edition format. I can get access to NewsNow before it hits my mailbox from the comfort of my chair on my tablet in a format that is very user

friendly. If you’ve ever read books on your Kindle, Kobo or tablet, try reading our local newspaper in the same way. Great!” Ruth Moffatt Grimsby
