MEDIA NEWS Africa’s biggest media group, Naspers, expects to report a 15% to 25% fall in headline earnings per share for the year to March, due to a higher accounting charge, and says core profit will edge higher. Concerning information has been brought to the attention of the Media Update newsroom, whereby publishers have reported incidences of ‘ghost magazines’, and advertising sales people calling to solicit advertising for these supposed publications. It would appear that the business-tobusiness sector has been the most vulnerable. By posing as an employee of one of these ‘magazines’, advertisers are approached, who then pay for advertising in a publication that never hits the shelves or, if printed, comes out in minuscule quantities. Advertisers should therefore be extra cautious of these incidences. Twelve of South Africa’s hottest names from the world of sport; entertainment; politics; and business will be “Munching for Mental Health”, all in the name of Mental Health advocacy. Each celebrity will be auctioning off two hours of their highly sought-after time to one extremely lucky bidder who makes the highest bid on website from 23 to 30 June. The bid is the Bid or BuyLwebsite in aid of supporting South Africa’s largest mental health initiative – the South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG). Newsclip is one of SADAG’s proud sponsors. Miss Earth South Africa 2009, in association with Consol, was recently crowned this weekend at Emperors Palace. 20-year-old Chanel Grantham is the first Durbanite to take the title. Grantham will represent South Africa at the International Miss Earth 2009 pageant, to take place in the Philippines later this year. “We at Newsclip are conscious of environmental influences, and have decided to commit our support to the Miss Earth South Africa team for another year”, says Newsclip Executive Strategist, Daniel Munslow.

A f r i c a F i n a n c e Corporation (AFC) and other investors have closed an equity financing deal for the Main-One Submarine Optical Fiber Cable System. AFC is one of the largest investors in the USD240million, African-led project. Debt finance for the project is being provided by a consortium of development finance institutions, led by the African Development Bank and a group of Nigerian banks. FA News Online reports that national healthcare is urging journalists and the press to put pressure on government to disclose the information they request. Collins Khumalo, newly appointed Chief Operating Officer at MultiChoice, is set to take the organisation into a new field of growth based on some fundamental operational insights – what the consumer wants. The Media Development and Diversity Agency are mourning the passing away of Nosipho Nicolette Tladi, former Editor and Founder of Port Alfred newspaper, Nemato Voice. Do young people read newspapers? The conventional wisdom says no, but the reality is different; there are plenty of newspapers that successfully attract the young, and they’ll be sharing their strategies at the eighth World Young Reader Conference & Expo, to be held in Prague, Czech Republic, from 27 to 30 September. Press freedom violations continue to mount worldwide, the World Association of Newspapers (WAN) said in its half-year review of global press freedom, that paints a bleak picture in much of the world. The WAN has condemned a `climate of impunity` in Mexico that allows the killers of journalists to avoid prosecution, and has called on President Felipe Calderon to do more to bring the murderers to justice. A new association dedicated to protecting press freedom and the business interests of publishers and distributors in the former Soviet republic of Kyrgyzstan, has joined the WAN. 1

They should be inspired to create in original, effective Afrikaans, and not merely translate advertising messages into Afrikaans: that’s where the challenge lies.” So says RCP Media (Rapport; City Press; and Sondag) CEO, Sarel du Plessis. “And because Rapport deems the encouragement of original, impactful Afrikaans advertising of the utmost importance for this Afrikaans Sunday newspaper, it has once again come out in full support of the Pendoring Advertising Awards as a gold sponsor,” says Du Plessis. New CNN research study discovers why cross-platform advertising sets pulses racing Findings released from a new study by CNN International suggest that brands that choose multimedia campaigns to communicate their advertising messages are more memorable to consumers and are more likely to enhance perception of their brands. The results carry weight for brands that place their advertising in an engaging environment, prompting an emotional response from the audience. The CASE study (Cross-platform Advertising Study on Effectiveness and Engagement) consisted of a rigorous two-stage approach. Stage one involved a multinational online questionnaire exposing consumers to diverse media experiences to measure cross-platform effectiveness. Stage two measured attention and engagement through a variety of techniques including biometrics; eye tracking; and in depth interviews. “We wanted to show that by complementing advertising on CNN TV with ads on CNN.com and CNN mobile, an advertiser can markedly increase campaign re-call, leading to positive shifts in brand attitudes,” commented Didier Mormesse, SVP Research, CNN International. “The fact that these respondents were not primed for an advertising study makes these results even more poignant.” Engagment and biometrics Body responses, such as heart rate; motion; respiratory rate; and galvanic skin response (sweating), were translated into measures of ‘attention’ and ‘engagement’ – the Holy Grail for advertisers. These were collected by using a lightweight ‘smart vest’, which respondents wore while watching CNN programming and advertising. The biometric research proved that CNN television and online content prompted an emotional response from the audience. Perhaps contrary to popular belief that viewers disengage once scheduled programming ends, the results also showed that engagement can actually increase during ad breaks, as much as 10%. Jonathan Davies, EVP, CNN Advertising Sales, added, “In the current economic climate, CNN is committed to demonstrating ROI for every advertising dollar spent. This study shows it is content that provides the springboard for advertisers to secure meaningful connections with audiences. In conjunction with our recent PWC study, it provides valuable industry insight to help brands market smarter.” Getting your ad noticed The level of attention an advertisement receives impacts on the ability of respondents to remember the brand. When respondents viewed advertising online and on mobile, they were more attentive, increasing the likelihood of advertising being noticed and adding to the re-call of the overall campaign. For example, using the eye-tracking technology, which measures the time viewers spend gazing at points on a web or mobile page, users eyes were on the video window on the CNN website for 66 to 80% of the time that the video story was playing. Video attention is higher still during the pre-roll ad. On average, users’ eyes are on the pre-roll ad for 77-87% of its duration.

Cross-platform The research showed that, despite the high crossover between the audiences of all the CNN properties, the audience is in a different state of mind when online or using a mobile phone, versus watching television. Generally, audiences were more attentive (though not necessarily more engaged) when online or using a mobile phone than when watching television. For example, one in five consumers who were exposed to TV advertising for a well known bank were spontaneously able to recall the brand advertised. However, when online and mobile advertising were added, this figure rose to one in three. With video viewing online and television viewing both prompting a strong emotional response from respondents, brands combining TV advertising with online advertising are surely onto a winning formula. Click here to see how the results were gathered.

MPASA announces training course With fierce c o m p e t i t i o n within the media and the current economic situation making circulation even harder, readers’ needs are critical. The consumer of 2008 is not the consumer of 2009. Make sure your staff are up to date with the latest writing trends and media techniques. Starting in mid-June this year, the Magazine Publisher’s Association of South Africa is pleased to announce it will, once again, be running its training courses. Using the finest trainers in the industry, it will be offering courses on various writing skills as well as sub-editing; layout and design; and crisis management and the media. These will be offered to all members of MPASA, in consumer; trade; business to business; as well as custom publishing. For the first time also, MPASA will be offering these courses to government and corporate sectors who have expressed a need for training and/or skills improvement. “Given the close relationship between magazines and their readers, and the opportunities this offers advertisers, it requires a very special skills set to work in magazines,” says MPASA Chairman, John Relihan. “In a rapidly changing and ever evolving media environment, it is vital that writers and designers alike are offered the opportunity to both hone these skills and learn new ones. MPASA is proud to offer both its own members and media staff in other industries this opportunity for continued education.” A key component of each course will be the workshopping element, where delegates’ own work will be reviewed and individual help given to each person, so they leave the course with the latest techniques and savvy needed to enhance and improve their skills. Because of this individual attention, numbers for each course will be limited.

IN FOCUS: 25 June SAARF RAMS 2009 Release 2 By Desi Tzoneva On Friday, 12 June, the South African Advertising Research Foundation (SAARF) announced the latest SAARF RAMS release at a presentation held at the Bryanston Country Club. The fieldwork for this wave was a combination of data conducted from midJanuary 2009 to early-May 2009. Time spent listening Total radio listening is down on both the year previous and on the previous survey. Weekly listening has fallen from 93.8% a year ago, to 92.6% Reach in RAMS April 2009, to 91% currently. Much of this decline came from losses in metros and Gauteng, in LSM 6; 7; and 10; and from the 35 and older demographic. Across an average Monday to Friday, radio listening is down by 2.5% year-on-year and from 76.0% in the previous survey to 74.2%. Fewer listeners in metros, the Western Cape and Gauteng, in LSM 6 to 7; and in the female and 50 and over demographics contributed to this decline. Saturday listening has been the hardest hit year-on-year, down by 7%. Currently, Saturday reach is 67.8% down from 69.5% in RAMS April 2009. Metro; Gauteng; female; and LSM 7 audiences are down. Listening on a Sunday has been slightly less affected than on Saturdays, down by 4% over RAMS June 2008. Current levels are at 66.8%, down from 68.4% previously, primarily due to losses in metros; Gauteng; in LSM 7 and amongst audiences aged over 35. While audiences may have shrunk, listeners have increased their time spent listening (TSL) over the previous survey. TSL is up by 18 minutes per week to 29h06. While an improvement on RAMS April 2009, TSL levels have still not recovered enough to match the 29h54 recorded a year ago. Daily TSL is 04h09, up two minutes on the previous survey. SAARF reports that over the same 12-month period, television viewing increased significantly, which may have contributed to these lower listening levels. According to SAARF TAMS, Audience Ratings (ARs) for television are up by 15% over the past year – from 3.206 million viewers in an average minute to 3.693 million currently.

-The weekly Free State reach of QwaQwa Radio has risen from 6.6% to 10.6%, giving the station a weekly audience of 213 000. -Radio 2000 has grown its weekly audience from 314 000 to 490 000, upping its reach from 1% to 1.6%. Weekday reach is up from 0.3% to 0.5%. -Talk Radio 702’s weekly audience is up from -1.4% to 1.9%, with 584 000 listeners in total. Community radio is bucking the total radio trend of declining listenership. Compared to RAMS June 2008, community radio figures are up from 20.1% reach per week to 22.5%. This growth can be attributed to significant listenership gains in the KwaZulu-Natal; North West; and Limpopo community radio sectors. Total community radio now attracts 7.037-million listeners, up from 6.259-million in the previous year. Other significant results Jacaranda 94.2’s weekly reach is down from 8.4% to 7.1% and weekday listening is down from 4.1% to 3.2%. RMFM’s weekday reach has dropped from 0.8% to 0.5%; Lesedi FM’s average Monday to Friday reach is down from 7.3% to 6.5%; Soshanguve Community Radio is down across the week from 2% to 1.3% reach in Gauteng; and Thobela FM’s national weekday reach is down to 5.6%, from 6.6%. The next SAARF RAMS release takes place on 12 August at the Bryanston Country Club. The full presentation is available on the SAARFLwebsite website. JOIN THE CONVERSATION

Station trends -5FM’s weekly reach is up from 5.1% in RAMS® June 2008 to 5.9%, with audience growth from 1.574million to 1.839-million. -99.2 YFM is almost at the 1.5-million mark, with a weekly reach which has grown from 4.1% a year ago to 4.8%. -Eden FM has grown its weekly reach into the Western Cape from 1.9% to 3.4%, bringing its audience to 106 000. -Gagasi 99.5FM has improved both its weekly and average Monday to Friday reach. IN FOCUS: 18 June Britain goes digital By Leigh Andrews The UK has appointed its first Director of Digital Engagement, Andrew Stott - one of the original sponsors of the Power of Information (PoI) work. It considered a Digital Rights Agency. People are alsoLconsidered now asking whether the Director of Digital open up UK Government. Engagement can help to lopen It seems highly possible, especially in light of the new Digital Engagement blog, which can be seen as an extension of the Power Of Information taskforce blog. This has been well-met, as in 2005, the British Prime Minister’s Strategy Unit released a joint report with the Department of Trade and Industry, titled ‘Connecting the UK – the digital strategy’. Many feel that the digital divide remains a British ehurdle , which could actually government Lhurdle disenfranchise the area in the near future. Digital Engagement team building on Power of Information’s foundation The new British Digital Engagement team comes with an innovative new blog, promising many wonderful online opportunities for the public to engage with the government. The Blog will keep citizens informed on what the team is involved with, as well as the technical challenges it faces, and will also be used to test out early solutions. It will incorporate everything from the Power of Information taskforce blog, as a continuation of this aim. The Power of Information principles were put into action, and said to be “no longer just recommendations in a report, but… core to the future development and implementation of government policy”. The internet is having a massive Impact on how we live our lives. According to PoI, 65% of households in the UK have internet access, and nearly seven out of 10 Britons go online every month, using the internet to find out about public services - for many, it is the first port of call to find information. The Digital Engagement team aims to have an effective voice as a form of open information, as people need to be able to understand what is going on in their public services. The British government will thus build on what the PoI taskforce started, in terms of open information; open feedback; open conversation; and open innovation, under Tom Watson, MP, Minister for Digital Engagement. Stott’s Digital Engagement team will publish information about public services in ways that are easy to find, use, and re-use. The public should also have a fair say about their services, through open feedback. The Digital www.publicexperience.com Engagement blog listsLwww.publicexperience.com as a good example of this. Open conversation will also be fostered, with the promotion of greater engagement through more interactive online consultation and collaboration. Professionals will also be empowered with online peer-support networks in their area of work. Lastly, the blog promises to promote innovation in online public services, to respond to changing expectations. The Digital Engagement team claims to be open to new ideas, and encourages users to speak their minds by leaving comments on the page, and by asking for suggestions about what a data site for the UK government should look like.

The Digital Britain Report A joint Department for Culture Media and Sport (DCMS)/Berr press release details the upcoming Digital Britain report. It states that in addition to Britain’s new Digital Engagement team, an action plan to secure the UK’s place at the forefront of innovation; investment; and quality in the digital and communications industries will be developed by Stephen Carter, the first Minister for Communications, Technology and Broadcasting. It states, “Already a major force in the economy, worth over £52-billion a year, the digital and communication sectors are growing in significance as the country faces up to current financial and market challenges. Vital to underpinning global economic activity, they are critical to every business in our economy, acting both as a catalyst for creativity and allowing efficiency gains. And they have a major impact on our culture and quality of life.” Drawing on expertise from across Government; regulators; and industry, Lord Carter’s report will be a comprehensive analysis of Britain’s digital economy. Digital Britain aims to accelerate the rate of growth, and cement the UK’s position as a world leader in the knowledge and learning economy. The UK Intellectual Property Office will take forward work to deliver a digital copyright framework, which supports creativity; investment; and job creation in these important sectors. Watson and Stott’s Digital Britain report and Digital Engagement team sound like footsteps to the future that South Africa should emulate - a step in the same direction as Obama’s campaign. IN FOCUS: 11 June Citizen journalism: the evolution of media By Desi Tzoneva Citizen journalism is a term that has rapidly emerged on the international news and media arena over the past few years. The term, synonymous with ‘grassroots journalism by the people,’ public-, participatory-, democratic-, or street-journalism conducted by ‘the former audience,’ and members of the public, is used to refer to the increased reliance on citizens’ active role in the process of collecting, reporting, analysing and disseminating news and information. In `What is Participatory Journalism’, J.D. Lasica classifies citizen journalism into the following categories: 1. Audience participation (such as user comments attached to news stories; personal blogs; photos or video footage captured from mobile phones; or local news written by residents of a community) 2. Independent news and information websites (such as consumer reports) 3. Fully-fledged participatory news sites 4. Collaborative and contributory media sites 5. Other ‘thin media’ (such as mailing lists, newsletters, etc.) 6. Personal broadcasting sites (such as video broadcast sites) The intent of the new medium is to provide independent, reliable, accurate, wide-ranging and relevant information that a democracy requires, according to Barman and Willis’ 2003 report, ‘We the Media: How Audiences are Shaping the Future of News and Information’. Mark Glaser says that “the idea behind citizen journalism is that people without professional journalism training can use the tools of modern technology and the global distribution of the Internet to create, augment or fact-check media on their own or in collaboration with others.” Online news sites invite contributions from local residents who often report on topics that conventional newspapers tend to ignore. Journalists have said that our readers or listeners know more than we do, which can be liberating and threatening at the same time. The audience is learning how to get a better, timelier report. It is also learning how to join the process of journalism, helping to create a massive conversation an in some cases doing a better job than the professionals. The three elements that have played a critical role in shaping the rise of citizen journalism include: open publishing; collaborative editing; and distributed content. Citizen journalism has also flourished due to emerging internet and networking technologies such as weblogs; chat rooms; message boards; Wikis and mobile computing; and mobile phones. Critics argue that citizen journalism in itself is a concept that is difficult to define; oftentimes citizen journalists can be activists and therefore lose the goodwill of objectivity; areas of ethics, where to get information from, staying within the legal frameworks also remain problematic; basic writing and reporting skills; they can be perceived as threats to professionals; and questions arise with reference to the accuracy and transparency of the information. In addition, in order for news to be

than those who work as fire-fighters or computer programmers. On the upside, Canwest News Service reports that newspapers have reasonable room for future optimism “…their financial problems relate to high debt, not lack of profit, and once the recession ends, they can reasonably expect to increase profit.” In addition to harnessing the power of the internet, Mathew Ingran, Blogger and the Communities Editor at the Globe and Mail says traditional media outlets need to include content from third parties to beef up coverage of news events. “I think citizen journalism…can be a very powerful tool, particularly when it involves eyewitnesses to a news event.” “I would like to see publications like my own make it easier for people to submit eyewitness reports of all kinds, especially from mobile devices.” Eyewitness reports and other methods of citizen journalism have the potential to expand the breadth of journalism that can be done, particularly when the media industry is cutting back on staff. “The more people there are reporting a story, the better picture we will get of what is actually happening.” Paul Knox Chairman of the School of Journalism at Byerston University, doesn’t think new media is going to be the nail in the mainstream media’s coffin. Although this information seems daunting, we must remember that these statistics stem from the US, and not from South Africa. Whereas reporting in South Africa could be boosted by voices from the marginalised, these tools are often not available to the majority. And despite trends in US media pointing to a rise in citizen journalists, this trend is not as prominent in South Africa. ClickLhere here to read the article in full online.

A Newsclip Media Monitoring Initiative

UPDATE

IN FOCUS: 4 June An African voice telling the African story - A24 Media By Desi Tzoneva There has been a lot of talk about how Africa is represented in the media, and the need to improve perceptions. One person who has done a lot towards that is Salim Amin, Founder and Chairman of A24Media, which he created to bring the African content to global publishers and broadcasters: An African Voice telling the African Story. Amin has designed an online contentdelivery platform to enable international media to source original material, where the content creators in Africa retain both copyright and 60% of the revenue. To date, he has amassed 600 stories on the site, and 50 new stills from the photographic archive are digitised and uploaded every day. Amin has also recently signed a contract with Mail & Guardian Media Group to supply images from its main publication to the site. Media Update`s Desi Tzoneva spoke with Amin about the growth of the A24Media initiative; the aims of the business; and the achievements of the initiative to date. Tzoneva: Some of A24Media’s strategic visions are to improve the perceptions of Africa in the international media. How do you plan to improve these perceptions? Which strategies and tools are used? Amin: We plan to improve the current perceptions of Africa in the international media by allowing African journalists to tell their stories through the A24 platform and to tell stories that are different to those that the international media is covering. While their focus is mainly on the negative aspects of the continent; stories of famine; war; HIV; and genocide; we are telling more positive stories about business opportunities; sport; music; art; fashion; the environment; and health. We receive content from a variety of sources – freelancers; African broadcasters; and NGOs – and this gives us enough variety to tell a more rounded story of Africa.

attempted on the continent and there was a huge demand for quality African content, not just within broadcasters in Africa, but also amongst domestic broadcasters around the globe. The decreased cost of setting up digital TV channels around Africa has also seen a mushrooming of new domestic channels that are are all hungry for content. Tzoneva: What has been the international response to the online content delivery platform? Amin: The response has been very positive, but it is still early days, and we are still getting the word out that we exist, which is the hardest part. Tzoneva: What has been the African continent’s response to the online content delivery platform? Are African journalists excited? Have you noted an increase in contributions by African journalists? Amin: African content generators have been very supportive and encouraging towards A24Media. Journalists love the idea of keeping their copyright and reaching an international audience that they have been denied access to so far. We have content from 27 countries around Africa, and are receiving around eight to 10 stories a week from across Africa, so we are happy with the way things have gone so far. The economic crisis has affected our short-term sales projections, as with any business, but we are confident that things will pick up soon. Tzoneva: What are the short- and long-term visions for A24Media? Where do you see this initiative going? Amin: I see us growing and adding an enormous amount of content in the medium term. Our internal archive of still images alone is massive, and we are in the process of digitising this and getting it on the website. Since the launch, we have added many new features to attract the public, and we want to open the site to citizen journalism and get dialogues and debate going amongst Africans on the continent, and those in the Diaspora.

GET TO KNOW THE TEAM Tzoneva: What has been the international media community’s response to A24Media? What have you noted about the growth in demand for the African content since the venture began? Amin: The international media has been quite receptive to the A24 concept and model. We believe the current financial crisis will help our project as budgets have been slashed in all media houses, yet there is still a need for more about the African content, and we hope we can provide that alternative. Africa is being seen by many as the next continent of opportunity, and information is desperately being sought after. We want to become the largest African content aggregator over the next couple of years. Tzoneva: How can A24Media contribute to the media landscape, both in Africa, and internationally? Amin: We can be an alternate and reliable source of African information and content. We are also providing a consistent and generous revenue stream to all contributors of content to ou r website. With the network of professional journalists we are building, we can also service any specific needs that broadcasters require in any country in Africa, thus making it more economical for them to cover the continent. Tzoneva: How did the A24 Media mechanism become established? Amin: The initial idea was to launch a 24-hour panAfrican news channel, but when we discussed the agency idea, we discovered that it had never been
