Trading Post Cafe revamps menu
Trading Post Cafe opened in Villa Rica in 2008 and hasn’t stopped growing since. They even had to move to a larger location due to the overwhelming response by patrons. They are constantly adding to their menu, but recently, the entire menu was revamped and expanded to include tons of menu items, Villa Rica residents are sure to enjoy. To start off, you can choose from starters such as fried green tomatoes, homemade onion rings, beer-battered mushrooms, fried dill pickles and more. Their entrees include a variety of 100% Black Angus beef burgers served with your choice of krinkle, curley or home fries; steaks, including a 16 ounce t-bone, teriyaki steak, and chopped steak; chicken dishes, including grilled chicken, chicken tenders, Cajun chicken and barbecue chicken; and seafood, including salmon, shrimp, tilapia and trout. And, if that wasn’t enough, they also have country dinner plates served with one of the meats available and your choice of vegetables. All plates also include a corn muffin or roll. Vogelsberg’s Bakery & Ice Cream opens Villa Rica residents with a sweet tooth will be thrilled that Vogelsberg’s Bakery & Ice Cream has opened in the former location of Dre’s Place on Highway 61 just south of Wal-Mart. This is the second location of the company, which has a successful bakery in Carrollton. That bakery was featured in Southern Living in 2005. Vogelsberg’s Bakery & Ice Cream serves a wide variety of baked goods, but is most well known for its fried pies, which come in apple, peach, cherry, lemon, coconut, blueberry, chocolate and strawberry and are $1.25 each. In the fall, their popular Sweet Potato pie will also grace the menu. They also carry cake donuts, cookies, fritters, petitfours, cremehorns, honey buns, cinnamon twists, and glazed croissants. They also carry ten flavors of Blue Bell Ice Cream for those hot summer days. Cones, sundaes and milkshakes are available. Even the earliest commuters can stop in or go to the drive-thru window. Administrator at Pine Knoll Nursing & Rehab Center, 770-832-8243, MMurphy@GramercyHealth.com My thirteen year old son was telling me the other day about a movie he watched in his seventh grade social studies class, “Hotel Rwanda”. He was horrified by the movie, which is based on a true story about genocide in Rwanda. He told me about the soldiers who killed people, including babies, with machetes. He could not imagine that such atrocities even existed in the world, let alone living in such a world where freedom from persecution and fear is not even a concept. I pointed out to him that it was good for him to learn about such things since we as spoiled suburban Americans tend to get upset when our cable goes out. Of course, being thirteen, the very next day he dropped his iPhone and broke the screen and the world as he knew it ended. Forget about Rwanda, MY IPHONE IS BROKEN! Such is life - our perspective shifts often and the really deep lessons get shoved aside in the face of the latest, usually shallow, crisis. I find myself in the same situation working in my nursing home. The BEST thing about working in long term care is the residents, by far. And usually they can bring me back when I am down and out about something budget-related or a risk management issue or a particularly concerning grievance. However, if I don’t get enough time with my residents, I tend to get morose and lose my perspective and forget how wonderful my job and facility really are. I was brought back to reality this week when in the course of my work I visited another facility in another county. I had been in this facility years before and had been impressed. I had even referred people to this facility based on my knowledge of it. However, when I visited I was disappointed. The building itself did not appear well maintained, the staff was not as friendly as I am used to, and some of the residents did not look as good as I would have liked to see. Comparatively speaking, my facility suddenly seemed like paradise! Yes, our building is old and small but it is very well maintained, it is cozy, clean, our residents are well cared for and our staff is friendly. There is clear evidence of leadership and a staff that is striving to embody our mission statement. Carroll County is blessed to have five facilities in it that embody the best of short term rehabilitation and long term care. All five of these facilities are rated above average according to the Nursing Home Compare website. Wonderful people work in these facilities and I would not hesitate for one minute to recommend any of them without reservation. And if I may for just a moment take a broader stance, I want to remind all of you that we are blessed to live in a free country. It is not always perfect but in general it is well maintained, it is clean and its citizens are well cared for. And despite my concerns sometimes, there is evidence of leadership.

Ants are No Picnic They may be small, but they can cause big problems. Ants enter your home through the tiniest cracks. While doing so, they leave behind a scent so others of their like can follow the trail to food. Ants are pests around the home because they feed on and contaminate human foods, infest structures and build unsightly mounds in lawns. In some cases, ants are able to inflict painful bites or stings. Ants are social insects. They live and work together in colonies made up of three castes. The three castes within an ant colony are the workers, queens and males. Worker ants are sterile females and seldom have wings. The size and appearance of worker ants will often vary with the species. The function of the worker is to construct, repair and defend the nest feed the immature and adult ants of the colony, including the queen, and to care for the brood. Queens normally have wings but loose them after mating. The primary function of the queen ant is reproduction. The queen may live for many years and is usually replaced by the daughter queen. Ants may have only one queen. These ants are called monogyne ants. Depending on the species, many ants have more than one queen. These ants are called polygyne. The male ant is usually winged and retains its wings until death. The sole function of the male ant is to mate with an unfertilized female reproductive. After mating occurs the male ant dies. Ants establish new colonies in one of two ways. New colonies may be started by flights of winged reproductives or by budding the colony. The most common method of establishing a new colony is for the male and female reproductive ants to leave the nest on mating flights. The newly mated queen then constructs a cavity or cell and rears a brood without the aid of workers. The colony grows in size and numbers as more young are produced. Budding occurs when one or more queens leave the nest accompanied by worker ants who aid in establishing and caring for the new ant colony. Some of the most difficult ant species to control spread by budding. Certain fire ant species, pharaoh ants, ghost ants, and Argentine ants spread colonies by budding. Most ants eat a variety of foods, although some have specialized food habits. Fire ants feed on honeydew, sugars, proteins, oils, seeds, plants and other insects. Crazy ants like sugars, proteins and insects. Carpenter ants prefer sugars and insects. Ants locate food sources by random foraging. When a scouting ant finds promising food, she carries it back to the nest. Other workers become excited and follow her to the nest. Then they follow scent trails back to the food source. Ants will travel great distances to get water. Workers are able to carry water to the colony in their stomachs. The best approach to ant control in the home is cleanliness. Any type of food or particles can attract and provide food for the ants. Food should be stored in tight containers. Remove plants that attract ants or control aphids, whiteflies and other insects that produce honeydew. Reduce moisture sources, including condensation
GARDEN & HOME and leaks. Location of the nest is key to the control of ants because they are social insects. Killing large numbers of individual ants may never solve the problem. It is important to identify the species of ants prior to controlling the problem. Knowing the species will give you important clues to the habits of the ant and potential sources of the nest for long term control and colony elimination.

By this time all of our warm season lawns should be well into green up, however as I drive around I still see many lawns that are not looking all that great. If you have concerns regarding your lawn, I always recommend aerating the lawn to improve its overall appearance, in conjunction to a good fertilizer program. Aerating lawns is one of the most important and neglected practices available for your lawn. Lawns that receive regular aeration will be: • Greener • Easier to maintain • Suffer from fewer pest problems and disease Aerating Lawns also: • Helps control thatch build up • Improves the soil structure • Helps create growth pockets for new roots • Opens the way for water and fertilizer to get into the root zone of your lawn SOIL COMPACTION - THE ENEMY OF LAWNS An enemy of lawns is soil compaction. Soil compaction is a frequent cause of turf deterioration. It’s caused by lawn traffic, like walking and mowing. Soil compaction is greatest (or worse) in the top 2” to 3” of the soil. When soil gets compacted by walking or mowing, dirt particles are forced together. This is a big problem because it reduces the area where your lawn’s roots can grow. For you to maintain a healthy lawn through periods of stress, your lawn soil needs water, air, and nutrients in the top 6” to 10”. Soils that are hard and compacted have no nooks and crannies to hold the water, air, or nutrients. Without these crucial components root growth is virtually impossible and greatly impeded to say the least. If your lawn’s roots aren’t growing, the grass won’t develop the root system that is essential to survive in hot/dry or harsh/cold periods. Aerating lawns is really beneficial anyplace your lawn slopes too. If you aerate, water will soak in those sloped areas, instead of just running off quickly before it can soak in. You’ve noticed those dry slopes you have, it’s because the water just isn’t getting down to the roots. Aerating will help that problem.

Psychologist Corner Nonverbal Learning Disorder

While language disorders and their impact on daily functioning have long been understood, the fields of neuropsychology and psychology have only relatively recently begun to understand the impact of nonverbal disorders. NVLD is present when an individual’s nonverbal reasoning skills are significantly weaker than their verbal skills. This may be seen in significantly stronger verbal, rather than nonverbal, IQ scores. In early development, these individuals often exhibit advanced language development. At the same time, delayed motor development is often present. They may be slow to learn to walk and may not learn to ride a bike until eight or nine years of age. These children often have difficulty performing fine motor skills. Because their language skills are advanced, and memory is often a significant strength,
these children are often identified as “gifted” in the early academic years. However, as they get older, their inability to process and use nonverbal information begins to cause significant behavioral, social, academic, and emotional difficulties. While not all individuals with NVLD exhibit every symptom or impairment, NVLD often involves impairments related to spatial reasoning, motor skills, social skills, math, and behavior. Children with NVLD may be considered “clumsy,” as they fall frequently, bump into things, and often spill things. These behaviors are often seen as “inattentive” and “impulsive” by parents and teachers, which may result in a diagnosis of ADHD. However, these behaviors are generally related to impaired sensory processing, rather than to ADHD. More troublesome than poor motor skills are the social impairments related to NVLD. The vast majority of our communication is nonverbal. Individuals with NVLD often misread, or completely miss, these aspects of communication. Children with NVLD are often extremely concrete, or literal, in their language interpretation. They believe that what a person says is exactly what they mean. Due to being too literal, they do not recognize sarcasm or figures of speech, and may be prone to follow rules too well. This often causes significant problems, as parents and teachers view this as defiance. The most appropriate analogy for understanding NVLD may be to consider being in a foreign land, where you do not speak any of the language. The natural response is to be somewhat anxious and apprehensive in that situation, though for most of us, we can “read” the most important nonverbal aspects of the situation. This allows us to make educated guesses about how to respond.

Auto-Pilot Parenting

If you listen even longer, you’ll find that they’re not exactly enjoying their parenting journey. No one ever said being a parent is easy and raising our kids to become the young men and women God has created them to be can be a daunting task. Parenting is a 24 / 7 job and we can sometimes find ourselves falling into the trap of parenting on auto-pilot. “Don’t make me pull this car over; do as I say and not as I do; it’s not going to hurt you to try; when I was a kid…; just wait until you grow up; or you don’t realize how easy you have it” – sound familiar? If you think about it, it’s pretty easy to see that these phrases are completely useless and come out when we are on auto-pilot. Spacing out when our child is describing his favorite toy for the one hundredth time, answering ‘sure’ when we haven’t really listened to the question, just getting through the day without really engaging, talking over our kids or yelling because we are bigger and can get our way…these are all forms of auto-pilot parenting and they are not effective. Sure, they’ll serve our purposes once in awhile, which is why they remain in our parenting arsenal, but they do not serve our high calling as parents and even as ‘firepower’, their tiny bit of effectiveness will begin to fade if we keep using them. Besides, being on auto-pilot is boring! We expect our kids to learn all of the time - at school, at church, at activities, at lessons, at sports. We even buy them

educational toys, DVDs and games. What about us? I think we often get bored and frustrated as parents because we stop learning or because we develop the attitude that we have learned all we need to know. Life is an amazing and exciting journey and we can choose to learn and grow everyday. Everyone in the family will benefit if we spend our days searching for life’s lessons. We’ve identified our parenting destination (raising our kids to become the young men and women God created them to be), but parenting is just one part of our lifetime journey. We need to keep our eyes on our Creator, because I don’t think He’s finished with us yet either. Jeremiah 1:5 in The Message Bible tells us “Before I shaped you in the womb, I knew all about you. Before you saw the light of day, I had holy plans for you.” This applies to all of us, not just our children. We are on an exciting journey of our own!Next month, we’ll look at some of the items we need on our journey of a lifetime - the things that will keep us growing and enjoying our adventure as parents and as people. These items will also help keep our parenting off auto-pilot.

It’s here! With the end of the school year comes summer fun – one of the best times of a child’s life. School is out and the weather is warm enough to do all those things that we loved as kids: swimming, bicycling and enjoying the outdoors. Families will travel to sun-filled vacation spots and children will spend more time outside of the home. However, as much fun as all of that seems, there are dangers lurking around each corner. You can help kids avoid these hazards by taking simple precautions. Bad bugs • Serious reactions to bee and wasp stings – indicated by hives, dizziness or shortness of breath – require immediate medical attention. Call 911. You may ask your pediatrician about other instructions, like the use of an antihistamine, such as Benadryl™, in the event of a reaction. • Mosquitoes can carry West Nile virus, which can be fatal. To stay safe, consider keeping children indoors during dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active and apply an insect repellent that contains no more than 30 percent DEET. Combination sunscreen/insect repellant products should be avoided because sunscreen needs to be reapplied every two hours; insect repellant
should not be reapplied. • Ticks can cause Lyme disease and other infections. To protect your kids, have them wear pants and long-sleeve shirts when walking in the woods or tall grass. Check their hair and skin for ticks after they spend time outdoors. The removal of ticks is very specific and if not performed correctly, part of the tick may remain under the skin, exposing your child to tick-borne diseases. Ask your child’s doctor about the safe removal of ticks. Bikes and boards • Make sure children wear approved helmets that fit properly. Helmets reduce the risk for brain injury by up to 88 percent. Make sure they also wear helmets and wrist, knee and elbow guards when skateboarding. Protective padding also is recommended for bike riding. • Make sure their bicycles are the proper size and adjust the seats to the right height. • Be sure they know and follow the rules of the road. Allow them to ride in safe, designated areas only. Flip-flops • Flip-flops lack arch support and shock absorption, and they do not protect feet. Your child should not wear them for long periods of time, for sports or yard work, or for walking long distances. • Flip-flops are perfect for walking around a public pool, beach or locker room. Walking barefoot can expose feet to plantar warts and athlete’s foot. Garden chemical exposure • Follow product-label directions and warnings when using pesticides, herbicides and insecti- Article continues on page 29

The Next Step We celebrated Mother’s Day at our house yesterday and all our kids and grandkids came over for lunch. It was a fun relaxing afternoon. My 5 year old granddaughter, Emma, who is learning to write a few things, gave a card to Sheryll. It was a huge Hoops and YoYo card that sang when you opened it. She signed it herself with, “I love you Mom.” The card was to Sheryll, her grandmother who she calls Nana, but she doesn’t know how to write that yet. She signed the card with what she knew and Sheryll loved it. Sheryll knew exactly what she meant and was blessed by the fact that Emma herself had signed the card. Sometimes we come to places in our lives, decision points, where we don’t know how to take the next step. We’ve never been to that place before, or we have failed every time we come to that place, so we are hesitant to move forward. For those of us who are seeking to follow Jesus in this life, there are times when we are not sure of the direction He would have us go. Sometimes it seems as if His voice is clear and easy to hear and sometimes it seems as if it is muted and indistinguishable. The next step, the next thing we are supposed to do, looks daunting, tough, or downright scary. And too many times we simply stall out, doing nothing because we don’t know how to do the next thing. I think we can learn a valuable lesson from the way Emma signed Sheryll’s card. Just do what you know how to do, and keep doing it until you know how to do the next thing. Instead of stalling or stopping, paralyzed by the unknown, just do what you can, those things you know. It takes a lot of strength, help and effort to change the direction of a parked car. But if that same car is moving, even a little, the direction can be changed a lot easier. Don’t park it when you don’t know how to take the next step and the voice of God seems unclear. Keep moving forward by doing what you know, just doing the last thing you know He told you, and trust Him to direct your steps as you move forward. Sometimes the reason we don’t know is because we have no need to know—we have stopped moving forward. Our uncertainty, our fear, has stopped us in our pursuit of life. We don’t need further instruction, direction from God, because we are not taking any new ground. Take the next step, move forward with what you know, and God will meet you there. Just do like Emma did, write what you know until you know how to write something else. CHURCH A Fresh Start I sure am thankful that I can start things over again. I make too many mistakes. I mess things up way too often. I’m not the best dad, husband or leader, but I’m growing. Dogs with Itchy Skin

It’s also one of the first to show the effects of a food that isn’t completely meeting the dog’s nutritional needs. Veterinary research has shown that most skin disorders in dogs can be eliminated or reduced by changes to the diet. Eliminating fleas helps, too, provided this is done in a way that creates no additional sources of irritation to the dog’s skin. Try something new. Sometimes changing a dog’s food can eliminate itching problems. Changing to a new food that doesn’t contain the primary protein and carbohydrate sources in the current food may be enough to get rid of the itch. Only 1 in 20 itchy dogs is truly allergic. Most veterinary nutritionists now believe that only about one in twenty itchy dogs is actually allergic to any of the ingredients commonly found in high-quality natural dog foods. For the large majority of dogs with itchy skin, the problem is that the dog’s diet doesn’t meet all of its nutritional needs, or that the dog has built up an intolerance to something in the food, not that the dog is allergic to a specific ingredient. Provide immediate itch relief. If a dog is suffering from itchy skin, and a veterinarian has ruled out skin disorders or other conditions as the cause, a topical remedy may help. Some contain soothing botanicals, like aloe, shea butter or oatmeal. Topical treatments that include lidocaine along with the skin conditioners, can help numb the irritation.

As a facilitator for Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University and eighteen years of biblical financial counseling, I’ve come to the conclusion that there is a great deal of confusion concerning wealth. Webster’s Dictionary defines wealth as, “abundance of valuable material possessions or resources”; however, wealth is not determined by how much “stuff” you have. It is based on how many appreciable assets you own. In the financial community this is considered your net worth (assets- debts = Net worth). You may consider someone driving a new highline vehicle, living in a gated community, and who has secured places for their children in the most expensive schools to be wealthy; however, it may not be as it appears. If they used a large amount credit to finance their lifestyle, their net worth may be considerably lower than what is necessary to be prepared for an emergency, job loss, or to be independent in their retirement years. Debt can greatly reduce dollars for savings and investments, even for the largest of income levels. Is there a way we can be certain that our net worth is adequate

Sitting with your financial advisor can help you determine a very specific answer to this question; however, I recently read a book that gives a good “rule of thumb” formula that provides an excellent place to start: “Multiply your age by your realized pretax annual household income from all sources except inheritances. Divide by ten. This, less any inherited wealth, is what your net worth should be.” (The Millionaire Next Door: The Surprising Secrets of America’s Wealthy, by Thomas Stanley and William Danko, page 13) If you have taken the time to figure out the rough estimate of what you need to have and compared it to your net worth you may be relieved, hopeful, concerned, or even fearful. The good news is that even if your net worth isn’t where it needs to be, it is never too late to change course. If you are young, you can normally make a few small adjustments and get back on track. If you are nearing retirement or retired, it is not too late for you either. It may take more effort and require larger adjustment, but it can be done.
