In America, there is a sport for every season and an eventual champion in every sport. With winter behind us, the National Football League (NFL) is celebrating the victorious Seattle Seahawks, winners of the Super Bowl. This spring, March Madness will produce a college basketball champion, followed by this summer’s National Basketball Association (NBA) champion. Finally, in the fall, Major League Baseball (MLB) will crown the winner of the World Series, and the cycle and seasons will start all over again. Collectively, millions will gather to watch others win. And then there’s you; me and countless others, many of whom may never play before thousands, score while millions watch or lift up a coveted trophy. The networks may never record your devotion to God, the commitment you show your family or the smiles you dawn to keep from crying, God is recording it all. You may be barely noticed down here, but you are celebrated where it counts the most. You may be underpaid on earth, but in the longest season of our lives, you will be treated like royalty. THANK GOD, Jesus gave us a glimpse of our lives to come. He also gave us reasons to celebrate right now. The life of Jesus, which contains perfection, power and no penalties set us up to win, for good. On a particular day, heaven’s cameras were rolling and recorded the event of a lifetime. More accurately, this was a one of a kind, never to be repeated, unparalleled act for all ages. Far greater than a Super Bowl victory, Jesus died to win souls. Yours, mine, your momma’s, your daddy’s, your children’s, the rest of your relatives and all of your friends. If that wasn’t enough, He died for sinners, saints, haters, pretenders, contenders, the losers and the winners. Christ’s victory was and is so complete, it included people whom we don’t yet know, but He knows them all by name. His resurrection touched and still touches people who speak other languages and He communicates with all of them. In fact, no one was left out of this victory, past, present, or future. Well, except for those who refuse to accept God’s gracious offer. The play was for all the marbles so to speak. It all came down to this: God wanted to extend His love to people so He handed the love ball to Adam who fumbled. God threw Adam’s past to Jesus who scored. The power of the Spirit raised Jesus from the dead and we were handed the trophy. Now we share God’s love and Jesus victory as Joint Heirs. We’re on the winning team. Jesus fought. We won! Jesus death, killed our past. Jesus burial, buried our past

and His resurrection revived our true lives as intended by God. And since all righteousness is fulfilled through the actions of Jesus, we really can say, “We Won”. As you celebrate Heaven’s Championship, the Resurrection of Jesus, invite God’s Son into your heart as your personal Savior and Lord. We cannot win without Him, but with Him we can all rejoice!

Itemizing vs. Standard Deduction: Tips to Help You Choose

Submitted by the Douglas County Chamber of Commerce

Courtesy of T. Dennis Connally Consultant, P.C., Certified Public Accountant, 8483 Campbellton Street, Douglasville, 770.920.2890, tdconnally.com

When you file your tax return, you usually have a choice whether to itemize deductions or take the standard deduction. Before you choose, it’s a good idea to figure your deductions using both methods. Then choose the one that allows you to pay the lower amount of tax. The one that results in the higher deduction amount often gives you the most benefit.

The IRS offers these six tips to help you choose. 1. Figure your itemized deductions. Add up deductible expenses you paid during the year. These may include expenses such as: • Home mortgage interest • State and local income taxes or sales taxes (but not both) • Real estate and personal property taxes • Gifts to charities • Casualty or theft losses • Unreimbursed medical expenses • Unreimbursed employee business expenses • Special rules and limits apply. 2. Know your standard deduction. If you don’t itemize, your basic standard deduction for 2013 depends on your filing status: • Single $6,100 • Married Filing Jointly $12,200 • Head of Household $8,950 • Married Filing Separately $6,100 • Qualifying Widow(er) $12,200 Your standard deduction is higher if you’re 65 or older or blind. If someone can claim you as a dependent, that can limit the amount of your deduction.

3. Check the exceptions. Some people don’t qualify for the standard deduction and therefore should itemize. This includes married couples who file separate returns and one spouse itemizes.

4. Use the IRS’s ITA tool. Visit IRS.gov and use the Interactive Tax Assistant tool to help determine your standard deduction.

5. File the right forms. To itemize your deductions, use Form 1040 andSchedule A, Itemized Deductions. You can take the standard deduction on Forms 1040, 1040A or 1040EZ.

6. File Electronically. You may be eligible for free, brand-name software to prepare and e-file your tax return. IRS Free File will do the work for you. Free File software will help you determine if you should itemize and file the right tax forms. It will do the math and e-file your return – all for free. Otherwise, you may file electronically with commercial software, or through a paid preparer. For more information, see the Bartering Tax Center in the business section on IRS.gov.

RESTAURANT REVIEW: OLIVE GARDEN Olive Garden Launches Biggest Menu Evolution in its History My family loves to eat out - especially if we have an opportunity to try things we have never eaten before. So, when I found out Olive Garden added over twenty new items to their menu, my son Dylan and I headed over to their location by Arbor Place Mall. Our waitress, Amanda, and the General Manager, Greg Balogh, were both enthusiastic about the new items, and had a thorough knowledge of what was on the menu. Greg explained that the restaurant was keeping up with trends by delivering a cuisine that is focused on what customers have indicated they desire in a casual dining experience. Among these are “small plates” which give diners a chance to experience several dishes in addition to their main course, priced at $5 or less. There are five new small plates in addition to the three existing small plates. The expanded menu also gives pasta lovers many choices with the Cucina Mia dish. Dishes is probably a more appropriate term though, because this option gives diners the ability to create their own Italian classic by choosing from six pastas (including a gluten-free Rotini), five sauces,

and adding an optional topping from four choices. So, in essence, there are well over 100 new pasta combinations. Four new “lighter fare” items mean there are now 7 entrees under 575 calories. The many new nonpasta items include two chicken entrees, four seafood selections, and a parmesan-alfredo crusted filet. Salad fans will enjoy the option of adding Antipasti Italian Meats and Cheese, or Roasted Tomato Caprese as a “Salad Topper” for an extra $2.99. Dylan and I decided to start out with three different small plates. Our absolute favorite small plate was the Parmesan Olive Fritta, which is a bite sized blend of olives and Italian cheeses, lightly fried, and then served with a choice of citrus aoli or gorgonzola cream dipping sauces. We tried both sauces and the dish was absolutely outstanding using either sauce. The olives were not overpowering, so you could still taste the cheese. Once it was time to choose our entree, it was quite difficult to decide, as all of the new items sounded amazing. We decided we would try three entrees, and the restaurant was kind enough to split all three entrees in half so that we could each try all of them. Greg encouraged us to try the Cucina Mia, which is the dish where you pick your pasta, your sauce, and optional topping. Our second entrée was the 6-ounce Parmesan-Crusted Filet. It came with sautéed Italian vegetables and roasted garlic. The crust gave it a nice flavor, and I was glad that it was not a huge cut of meat at this point, because I had already enjoyed so much other delicious food. The entrée that we liked the most was the new Crab Topped Chicken. This was pan-seared chicken breasts topped with crab meat in a lemon-cream sauce on a bed of fresh spinach, and served with garlic parmesan mashed potatoes. The sauce gave it a light flavor. Olive Garden opens at 11am seven days a week. From Sunday through Thursday it closes at 10pm, and on Friday and Saturday it closes at 11pm. The Douglasville Olive Garden is located at 6710 Douglas Boulevard, or you can visit one of 17 other restaurants located throughout the Atlanta area. dining 2014 Taste of Douglasville to be held May 17 In partnership with the City of Douglasville, the Cultural Arts Council of Douglasville/Douglas County presents the 2014 Taste of Douglasville May 17 from 1pm to 5pm, now in its twenty first year and better and bigger than ever before. Proceeds of downtown Douglasville’s most popular event benefit the Cultural Arts Council and its programs. There will be high quality outdoor arts and crafts booths, lots of children’s activities, and outstanding performers on the O’Neal Plaza stage. The 2014 Taste for Douglasville Arts will include more vendors, more restaurants, more performers, more participants, and more family fun as well as more promotion of this community cultural showcase in historic downtown Douglasville. “Last year we introduced the Better Living Market during Taste of Douglasville,” commented CAC director Laura Lieberman. “It was a huge

success, and our festival was the first ever major “tobacco free” event in our community. The arts are all about quality of life, and that message came through loud and clear with lots of new healthy activities and food choices supported by our public health department, a new and important sponsor of the festival.” “This year we are continuing to develop our Better Living Market, and we are focusing on more and more exciting activities in the Kids Korner, also supported by important new partnerships,” she continued. In 2013, more than 15,000 people enjoyed Taste for Douglasville Arts, and their participation helped the Cultural Arts Council support school programs reaching more than 8,000 local students, affordable spring break and summer arts camps in county and city parks, free spring and fall concerts on O’Neal Plaza, critically acclaimed monthly gallery exhibits at the historic Roberts-Mozley House, and more.

The Olive Tree adds Maryland Crab Cakes The Olive Tree has added Maryland Crab Cakes to their menu at all three of their locations (Lithia Springs, Villa Rica or Hiram). Their crab cakes are a family recipe from their sister restaurant The Olive Grove in Maryland. They use only Jumbo Lump crabmeat and secret seasonings in their recipe. After combining all of the ingredients, they bake them to perfection and serve them fresh to order. The crab cakes were voted Best in Baltimore Magazine in 2009, Zagat Rated 2013 and featured on MSNBC Bites Today Show in 2011. For more information about the famous Maryland Crab Cakes visit The Olive Tree Restaurant at one of their three locations: Lithia Springs – 849 Thornton Road, 770.948.1288; Villa Rica – 150 Stone Street, 770.456.6456; Hiram – 37 Beatty Street, 770.439.0203.

merstein’s Cinderella was the most widely viewed program in the history of the medium. Its recreation in 1965 starring Lesley Ann Warren was no less successful in transporting a new generation to the miraculous kingdom of dreams-come-true, and so was a second remake in 1997, which starred Brandy as Cinderella and Whitney Houston as her Fairy Godmother. AN INTERVIEW WITH

News & Views publisher Tim Collins had the opportunity to interview Bryan White. Bryan will be appearing at Mill Town Music Hall as a part of The Heart Behind the Music Showcase, July 17. You can read the entire interview at www.newsandviewsusa.com/interviews.

When is your next album due out? Well, see that’s the thing, when you are doing it independently, and you don’t have anybody necessarily cracking the whip on you, it’s hard to stay on yourself about it when you juggle multiple jobs. I’ve been producing other people and writing, and all kinds of stuff. My single is available now and I hope to have the full album out by the end of the month.

You’ve had six number one hits including From This Momemt On with Shania Twain. What was it like recording that and how did that come about? I was in Chicago, asleep on the tour bus, and my tour manager came and woke me up and said “Mutt Lange and Shania Twain are on the phone.” I got on the phone with them, and they started telling me about a song they had written for her “Come on Over” CD they were working on. And they just said that they were big fans and they wondered if I would be into participating. I said “Well, absolutely” and they sent me the demo, and I learned it exactly like the demo. I went up to Canada and spent a couple of days doing vocals with them. It was one of the best experiences of my whole career. I am so honored to be a part of that record. Grateful.

That’s still a popular wedding song. Yeah, I get at least 4 or 5 people at each of my shows that come up and tell me they played

that song at their wedding. I love that. I also joke with them sometimes saying “Here’s my address where you can send the check.” (laughs)

You were 21 when you had your first #1 hit, was hard coping with success being that young? Well, at the time it was a little bit traumatic. I mean, to be that busy at that age was really hard. It was pretty challenging because you kind of felt like… I’ll tell you, like from 1994 to 1998 I didn’t feel like my life was my own. I felt like I was sort of being shuffled around to and fro by labels and management. Nobody really ever told me, “Oh, by the way, did you know all of these people are working for you?” (laughs). I mean, I didn’t really realize that at the time, just being naïve. But, if I could go back and change one thing, it would have been just to take a little bit more time for myself, and take breaks, and not be afraid to say no, I can’t do that here and there. I really let the career “Crazy Train” wear me out. That would be the only thing I would change. I’m honored just to have the experiences I have had. It’s been amazing.

Is that one of the reasons you took off some time, just because you were burnt out? Absolutely. You know, I got to a point where music, which was really my first love – wasn’t fun anymore, and being creative seemed to be just a real taxing thing. I felt like that was my definitive and impulse moment where I needed to get away from it and take a break. That’s really what I did. It was really the best decision that I ever made for my life and my career, you know.

I know that you’ve been busy working on the new album and making TV appearances with your

Arts & Entertainment

wife (Erika Page White) on The Private Lives of Nashville Wives. How is that show doing so far? It’s doing really well. Tonight is Episode 3. I haven’t seen it, so I have no idea what’s unfolding (laughs). I’m just the husband in the background, you know. It’s been an interesting part of our careers for sure. It’s been new ground – we haven’t gone down this road before, so we’re kind of spectators watching how it all unfolds. It’s been fun!

You’ve also been on the Tonight Show, and Late Night with David Letterman. Was that more nerve racking, going on a live show, as opposed to a show like The Private Lives of Nashville Wives? It’s really a different kind of nervous, you know. With one, you’ve got cameras on you while you are trying to be normal and appear normal, and live your normal life in your home and go about your day-to-day stuff. That’s a little bit hard to do with cameras on you. I don’t think anybody’s really good at that. And then doing Letterman or the Tonight Show – that’s a different too, because when you’re on stage you’re PERFORMING. You’re just concerned about performing good, and singing good. Those are the good kind of nerves that make you do good. I always think that when you’re a little bit nervous when it comes to performing on TV, I think it’s always a good thing, because you’re really on point. You’re completely alert and present, you know.

What is different about your new album ‘Shine’, compared to others you have released in the past? It’s a little more rock and roll. You will definitely hear all my influences in there. It’s pop/ country/rock. It’s a little more aggressive stylistically. Fun stuff

How did you come up with the title for the album? I didn’t even come up with the title. My engineer and co-producer did. There’s a song, actually that I just released to fans today – it’s called “Another Day In The Sun”. And in the chorus it chants “Shine” quite a bit. And Jason said, “That’s the title of the album dude”, and it kind of hit me like “Wow, I think you’re right. I think that is the title.” So, I didn’t come up with the title, Jason did.

If you had to pick a favorite moment of your career, what would it be? Wow, that’s a tough one right there. Man, you know, as far as a real epic, pinnacle type of career moment for me, one would be when I won my first ACM award. It was in 1996. I was in L.A., and when they called my name as the winner of the the top new male vocalist, it was just the most bizarre, surreal feeling in the world. I remember

On July 17th, you are coming to Bremen at Mill Town Music Hall to perform in The Heart Behind the Music. The other three artists will be Deana Carter, Teddy Gentry and Billy Dean. Have you met all of them before? I have, and I think they are all great songwriters, and great vocalists, so that’s why I am really looking forward to it. I know it’s going to be fun. It’s fun to do those things because I always feel like a spectator too. I feel like a fan in the audience, you know, I get to sit back and listen to all of these great songs, and banter back and forth with everybody on stage about our own memories, and our shows that we’ve all done together. It should be a lot of fun. I think fans REALLY dig shows like this!

seeing that I had arrived at that moment was very emotional.

Do you remember where you were when you first one of your songs on the radio? I was leaving Phoenix, headed to Tucson on a radio tour and I heard my song on the radio. We stopped and I called the station from a pay phone, and I told them “Hey, this is Bryan White and I just wanted to thank you guys for playing my song. I really, really appreciate it.”

If someone out there that is not familiar with your music, how would you describe it to them?

walking up the stairs thinking “don’t trip”, you know, “they’ll never forget it if you trip.” (Laughs) I think the thing for me was standing up there knowing that my hero was in the crowd, and I knew that my entire family was watching at that moment. It all hit me really hard after the show – I mean it was very emotional because I realized all of that hard work was paying off, and my family

Well, I don’t know, I think it’s country music laced with a lot of pop vocal style. And it’s got a rootsy side to it, because the acoustic style that I have – it’s a kind of a folky, rootsy, hammeron style. It’s kind of all those things, you know. There’s a lot of artists that were big influences on what I do. Steve Wariner, Vince Gill, Ronnie Milsap, Max Carl, Michael McDonald, Glen Campbell, and so on. So, I’m a country singer, but you also get a lot of other styles with that. You get a little bit of pop, you get some blue-eyed soul, a little bit of rock and roll here and there – so that’s kind of me.

AN INTERVIEW WITH RUDY GATLIN OF

Tim Collins, publisher of News & Views, recently interviewed Rudy Gatlin of The Gatlin Brothers. You can read the entire interview at www.newsandviewsusa.com/interviews.

I know you guys are really, really busy. I was looking at your tour schedule. You guys play a LOT of shows. Well, at certain times of the year it gets a little busier than others. January, February, March, April, May. Those first four or five months aren’t too bad. Then Summer, a little bit more, then, boy we do a whole lot at the end of the year. September through December with fairs and concerts, and in the casinos, so that gets busy. But through the year it’s not too bad.

How many concerts, in a given year, do you think you’ll play? Well, this year it might be a few more. We

20 |

VILLA RICA NEWS & VIEWS

usually do around 70 or 80 maybe. This year I think we’re doing 80 here in Branson. Plus, those dates on the road. So it will get on up to 100, 110 maybe this year.

What do you like about Branson? Well, we get to sit down and they come to us. (laughs) That’s pretty neat. We still travel quite a bit, as you mentioned, because that’s what you have to do. We just got back from a West Coast swing, up in Seattle and Northern California. That’s where the friends and neighbors are, so we go up there and sing for them. And we travel all over the country – we’re coming down to Georgia then going down to Florida. So, it’s what we do. We get to sit down here for two or three days in a nice theater (Starlight in Branson), nice folks in the theater, and let all the folks come to us. A lot of great shows are in Branson, so we like coming down here for a couple of days.

Arts & Entertainment

If you were trying to describe what one of your shows is like, for someone that is thinking about maybe coming to see you, what would you tell them? Well, we are going to sing the hits. And we’re going to throw in a couple of misses to make you appreciate the hits. (we both laugh). We’re not going to be able to do every one of them. Thank the good Lord we had more than a couple. We had several, but we are not able to get around to doing all of them. But, we’ll do a majority of them. We’ll throw in a couple of new tunes from the new Pilgrimage album that we released a couple of years ago. We’ll have some new tunes that they might not have heard off of that CD. And we might do a few gospel tunes. And end with a nice little patriotic number called “Americans, That’s Who”. And in amongst all those hits we throw in some pitter-patter. We like to cut up and have a good time.

You have had so many hits. Is there one that is the biggest hit, or the one most people would associate with you guys? All The Gold in California would be the recognizable hit. They may not recognize all the others, but by golly, they’ll recognize that one. Because sometime in their lifetime they have heard it. Sometime. This was back in 1978-79. But somehow, 30 year olds, 35 year olds and some that were not even born then – they will have heard it sometime during their lifetimes. They will be familiar with that song.

make all of those shows. Steve still lives there, so he makes quite a few of them. Steve, on occasion, will go speak or go sing on his own. I do the same thing - Rudy Gatlin’s All-Star Gospel Music Review. But basically, we still perform together – our base is singing together.

Any idea how many shows you have done in your lifetime? 147,000 (laughs). You know, I was thinking about that the other day, and we actually added it all up one time. How many shows we had done, how many miles we had traveled, how many times we had sung All The Gold, how many hotels we have stayed at, things like that. And that was 20 years ago, so you could probably double that, since we did that 20 years ago. But it’s a bunch. Doing a lot of shows, driving a lot of miles, eating out at a bunch. Like I said, that’s what we do.

Do you remember the first time you heard one of your songs on the radio? You know, I think the first time I remember hearing Broken Lady. I believe it was 1975? Or ’76? I think I was driving – I don’t know why I remember this but I think I was out in San Francisco. Driving across the Bay Bridge. And it came on the radio and I went “Wow”, and I think I almost ran into the truck in front of me (laughs). It was really neat, because it’s just like “Wow!”. That’s what you’re shooting for – to get it on that radio.

What are your plans for the future? Do you have anything different coming up, or are you going to just kind of keep doing what you are doing? Basically it will be to keep doing what we have been doing. We each, individually, have other projects going on. Larry has some song writing stuff. He’s back in Nashville, and he’s hosting Opry Classics and a Grand Ole Opry show at the Opry House and we join him. I live in Dallas, so I don’t

Dance Academy West to Co-Host Douglasville Youth Day

Mark your calendars for Saturday, May 10th Dance Academy West, Inc. (located on Bright Star Road) will be co-hosting Douglasville Youth Day along with Giving Initiatives and Alternatives, a non-profit 501 (C)(3) organization that provides community based tools and programs to educate, encourage and inspire youth and young adults to make the right life decisions and realize their full potential. Douglasville Youth Day will be a fun-filled day of carnival type activities, dance performances, free dance classes, and a variety of food. The purpose of Youth Day is to raise funds to award dance scholarships to dancers in need of financial aide. Since opening 12 years ago, Dance Academy West has become known as a high standard dance and performing arts studio in the West Georgia area. DAW is proud to offer a recreational dance program, with a strong focus on ballet, and also offer an opportunity for more serious dancers to dance on a competitive level. Owner, KC Emberson states, “Our competitive dance team is stronger than ever this season. We have a wonderful staff, including my business partner Kelly Gammill and our competitive team coaches, Ms. Sherry and Ms. LaTonya. We have 41 dancers on our team and will be competing a total of five times this season, on a regional and national level, traveling to Tennessee, South Carolina and Florida. We believe that the training our students receive prepares them in many ways. Several of our students have gone on use their training during their college years, receive college scholarships, and hold teaching positions while in college. In addition, and most importantly, the art of dance and being a member of our team, teaches selfdiscipline, tenacity, teamwork and time management. We are well aware of the life lessons that our dancers will learn from their time in the studio and we are honored to play such an important role in their lives…that is the easy part…the hard part or the part that we struggle with is figuring out how to provide this opportunity to dancers who are in need of financial aide.” Competitive dancing is expensive - in addition to travel costs, dancers are responsible for costumes, entry fees, choreography. This year alone Dance Academy West awarded over $11,000 in scholarships, but because of the financial strain this puts on the business, they have decided to host Youth Day to raise funds for their dancers. Their team will be performing several of their award winning routines and they will be offering free mini dance lessons throughout the day. The fun starts at 11am and will end at 4pm. The event, co-hosted by Dance Academy West, Inc. and G.I.A. will take place at 2529 Bright Star Road, Douglasville, GA 30134. If you would like to donate to the event or become a sponsor, please call Olivia Howard at 678.525.8390 or KC Emberson at 770.489.8580.

My husband and daughter love to cook. It’s fun watching them create amazing dishes, some real masterpieces. It looks picture-perfect and I love seeing the joy it brings them and to me as well. Not only does it look good, it tastes great too! When you think about it, we’re all creating something. Our lives

A pinch of Kindness - it goes a long way; 2 cups of Gratitude - you’ll feel better; ½ cup of Confidence - it gives you the strength to make a difference; 2 tbsp. of Thoughtfulness - it makes someone smile; 1 tsp. of Encouragement - we all need it; 1 cup of Grace - it feels good to give what’s been given to you; Forgiveness - you’ll never be the same; A dash of Joy - get your happy dance on; Smile a lot - you’ll look and feel better. It’s the cherry on top. With a recipe like this, you’ll be just fine! “But now, O Lord, thou art the father; we are the clay, and thou our potter; and we all are the work of thy hand.” Isaiah 64:8

are one big recipe and it won’t work, if we leave out some key ingredients. Maybe you’re a landscaper, painter, colorist, builder, architect, chef, or designer. You’re creating the right elements, formula and ingredients, all the time. We need to gather the right ingredients, in the right amounts, to get the desired result. Our lives are a lot like that. The same care, dedication, time and attention to details that we bring to other aspects of our lives are priceless. What do you think would happen, if we became our own project? How would we feel if we took the time to focus on our inner beauty, as much as the outward appearance? We all have a pretty good idea of what it takes to make something look beautiful on the outside, so let’s create a recipe for inner beauty, real beauty. The ingredients for this recipe are timeless. They cross barriers, unlock doors, brighten someone’s day, bridge gaps, mend broken hearts and fix hurt feelings. Let’s get started!

Who Pays for Nursing Home Care? By Melissa Murphy. Administrator at Pine Knoll Nursing & Rehab Center, Carrollton, 770.832.8243, mmurphy@cypressga.com Some of the most frequently asked questions heard from families in our line of work are, “Should I sell the house?” “Should I put assets in another name?” “What is the difference between Medicare and Medicaid?” Okay, here are some answers: Typically, though not always, a person comes to a care facility from the hospital because they have been sick or injured in some way that has interfered with their ability to care for themselves. The hospital social worker or doctor will explain that rehabilitation is indicated and inquire as to a preference for which facility. If the person is over age 65 OR has been disabled for more than 2 years and has worked and paid into Social Security, the person should have Medicare benefits through the Federal government. Traditional Medicare Part A (NOT MEDICARE ADVANTAGE or REPLACEMENT PLANS) pays for up to 100 days – pay attention, there is a catch – in a “Skilled Nursing Facility”

physical, occupational or speech therapy and care required for tube feeding. If the person continues to meet the skilled criteria, Medicare will pay for the first 20 days at 100%. On day 21, Medicare continues to pay through day 100 (as long as the skilled care on a daily basis criteria is met) but charges a co-pay of $152.00 (for 2014) per day. Okay, so that’s for people who have traditional Medicare Part A through the Federal government. What if the resident does not have Medicare, needs more than the 20 “free” days, cannot go home or cannot pay the co-pay? If there is supplemental insurance, the insurance will typically pay the copay. If not, and there are no funds to pay, Medicaid is a State program that is administered through the Department of Family and Children services (DFACS) in your county. Medicaid does pay for long-term nursing home care if the application is approved, but only for what days remain unpaid after the resident pays a copay of their total income less $50 per month. This means that NO ONE or NO AGENCY except the nursing home is entitled to the nursing home resi-

have taken a bit of hard beating. By now you should be able to tell what survived the extreme cold and what is best left for the compost pile. From my observations there were about a half a dozen shrubs that were hit particularly hard. Remember those USDA Hardiness Zone Maps, yeah the ones that say our area is labeled ZONE 7B, well for many years we have sort of “tricked” some plants not officially rated for our area to grow and thrive in our landscapes. Or plants were only marginally hardy here, and well, guess what, they bit the dust, especially those plants that were not in particularly good health anyway. In my particular instance, I had a beautiful Loquat tree (zoned 8-10) that I am afraid has died to the ground. Granted it has been there for over 7 years and was nearly 15’ tall, but alas no more, I will spare you the sorrowful pictures and wallow in my own tears, I know you must have at least one plant in your garden that gave up the ghost. Anyone have a prized Gardenia bush in your landscape. They were another plant that was hit relatively hard. The variety most affected were the Gardenia ‘radicans’.

COMMERCIAL & RESIDENTIAL • SALES & REPAIRS • MAINTENANCE

These low growing shrubs are not rated for our area, capping out at Zone 8, but they are regularly planted because they simply check the block on the low maintenance/low growing characteristic so many homeowners are looking for. Even the August Beauty gardenias affected. Their leaves turned black looking horrible right now. They only fix, cut them way back, but unfortunately that will only sacrifice the coveted flowery scented bloom. For foolproof gardenias, replace with a Kleim’s Hardy or Frost Proof Gardenia when you replant. Another shrub that has seen better days is Indian Hawthorne. Although it is technically zoned for our area we reside in its very upper limit. It seems more at home in Florida, where it grows quite handily. A relative of my prized Loquat I spoke about above, this is another shrub used mainly in

foundation plantings, due to its low growing habit. If your Indian hawthorn was damaged due to the cold weather it is likely it will begin to recover come spring. Do a bark check to see if a branch is still viable. Simply scratch the bark and if you see a layer of green underneath that branch should recover. If it is brown and hard, the branch is dead and should be pruned away. Many of the beloved purple foliage loropetalums suffered as well. Use the same bark check to see if your plant has remained viable. In general, I fear less for the loropetalum than I do for some of the other shrubs we have touched upon. Probably by now, you have already seen lots of new bud development and many flowers. All in all, treat this time as a chance to freshen up the overall appeal of your West Georgia landscape, I think it is fitting to say it’s time to go “OUT WITH THE OLD AND IN WITH NEW”, a new landscape that is.

Home Remodeling

Six Home Remodeling Projects You Should Never DIY Sometimes it seems it would be better to DIY everything. But the reality is some things are better left to a professional. So what home remodeling

the proper precautions and knowledge are crucial.

Creating An Outdoor Kitchen Outdoor kitchens are fantastic, but attempting to put one in yourself could be disastrous. It might seem easy enough (a little flooring and a grillstation) but you could end up with a half-finished patio and plumbing gone awry. So while it might be tempting to build one in your backyard, ask yourself if you’ll really use the kitchen year-round…and then, of course, call in a pro.

Adding Or Replacing Windows Specialized tools and methods are required to properly install new windows to make sure they are well insulated and secure. While it can be costly, a professional can ensure that you’ll be comfortable in your home for years to come.

Installing Siding If done properly, siding can last for years. But if siding is not securely installed, weather conditions can tear it off, or seep underneath, causing harm to the frame of your home. Rather than taking this chance, it’s safer to have a professional install it properly.

Tree Removal Cutting down trees, or even removing branches requires climbing and working with dangerous tools from a high distance off the ground. This is disaster waiting to happen, and definitely something better left to professionals who are trained and paid to do this!

Asbestos Removal Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral and has been used for years in older homes and businesses for its insulating properties. It’s resistant to heat and electricity and is a good acoustic barrier as well. Unfortunately, asbestos was found to be toxic, and most of its uses were banned in the United States in 1989 by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The ban was over-

Knowing when to do it yourself and when to hire a professional is something many homeowners learn by trial and error. Choose your battles, and don’t be afraid to hand off anything that will likely be hazardous, backbreaking, or too expensive.

Douglas County Institutes “Property Check” Service Douglas County Clerk of Superior Court Tammy Howard is helping people fight scams and identity fraud with a new on-line program. The new program - Property Check - has been added to the Clerk of Superior Court’s web page of the County web site, and it allows land owners to check their property by logging into the system. Property owners can sign up for free automatic alerts through text or e-mail message if someone takes a mortgage out on the land or house, or puts a lien or some other restraint on it. Many people do not realize that a third party can attach a lien or other restraint to your property without your permission or knowledge. Land owners may not find out about it until you try to re-finance or sell your property. Property Check will give owners notifications of any attachments so that - if the attachment is without their approval - law enforcement can be contacted and involved at the initial stage of the fraud. The County’s web site is www.CelebrateDouglasCounty.com and the Property Check link is on the Clerk of Superior Court’s page. The Property Check service is free and the notifications are also free.

Organizing Tips Living Life Organized is Not About Being Perfect By Joyce Maxwell, Speaker, Designer, Organizer and Recent Recipient of the “Woman of the Year- 2013” by Douglas Co. Chapter ABWA. 770.312.0100, joyce@ makeyourhomeahaven.com.

Is perfectionism keeping you from creating order in your life? Do you find yourself flipping through the latest issue of Good Housekeeping or Woman’s Day and thinking if only…I had the money, the time or the creativity my home could look like that? Be careful not to get caught up in the ideal world that has been created for inspirational purposes only. Yes, you can find awesome “ideas” on Pinterest and in magazines as long as you remember these photos have been staged and the moms behind the photos still vacuum up Lego’s in their vacuum cleaner when the photographer leaves. I’m not knocking these great resources (I also get inspired by them) as long as you keep things in proper prospective. At the end of the day organizing is about finding solutions to problems that are costing you money or causing you stress. What organizational problems are you dealing with today? (They will be different for every reader). Now, ask yourself - what is the simplest way to solve this? Then do it! Taking action today is always better than waiting until you have the perfect solution tomorrow. While pretty is nice, it’s not your main goal! If you have Legos all over the floor and you happen to have an empty shoe box nearby…use it. You can always make it pretty later.

Here are seven simple solutions to everyday problems using items you probably already own: • Add a tension rod across the back of a drawer to keep lids in place. • Use Dollar Store cork board in the bottom of a drawer to keep items from sliding around. • Attach cork board on the inside of a cabinet door to keep notes and things that usually end up on front of the fridge. • Use Crystal Light containers to store birthday candles, corn holders or for storing makeup brushes when traveling. • Recycle empty toilet paper rolls as holders for extension cords just fold cord and slip inside (spray paint or use decorative tape if you want to make pretty). • Flip top containers, such as hold disinfecting wipes, can be used to store plastic grocery bags. Just pull out as needed. • Tuck your folded sheets inside the pillow case for a neat storage solution.

Hopefully, I have inspired you to think outside the box and remember “magazine perfection” is rarely an attainable lifestyle. Until next month… God Bless and have a wonderful Mother’s Day!

The Family Connection Hurting on Mother’s Day By Kerry Patuka, a degreed and certified educator, licensed minister and founder of Drive 5 Ministries.kerrydrive5@yahoo.com

As far as holiday prep and stress go, for most of us Mother’s Day is a breeze. We don’t decorate for it. There’s not a long shopping list. Gifting our mom or mother-in-law can be as simple as a card or flowers. There’s not a big meal to prepare. In fact, moms usually get treated to a lunch or dinner out at a restaurant or cooked by loved ones at home. Mostly, moms get to sit back and be a bit pampered on our special day. The best part might be that handmade card or gift from our child made at school or church. It’s a simple and sweet day. Unfortunately, while we are sitting back and relaxing, there are those who might be hurting very deeply on this day. Usually we are not aware because they’ll keep their hurts hidden and to themselves. Some may even avoid us on this day because it’s just too hard for them. As I pondered on who may be hurting, I was surprised at how quickly the list grew. Singleness, infertility, secondary infertility, miscarriage and abortion these women may be hurting because they’ve never held their child in their arms and their hearts ache with emptiness and loss. The serious illness of a child or mothering a special needs child will leave some exhausted and emotionally spent. How will I get through this? What

if they don’t pull through? Single moms, moms in custody battles and moms with prodigal children may spend their day questioning, wondering or struggling with their own worth. Stepmoms, foster moms, empty nesters and those who have adopted may have their own battles raging inside their hearts and minds. Each of these situations may be sweet or they may be rife with hurt, strife or longing. Expectant moms may be rejoicing or they may be full of anxiety or fear. Will the baby be healthy? Will I be a good mom? Can I do this? Children, whether at home or fully grown, may be dealing with the loss of their mom, an ailing mom, an abusive mother, a mom serving overseas in the military, separated from mom or have questions from an adoption. Mother’s Day may be a day that heightens their hurts, losses or struggles. And let us not forget the men. Think about how many of these situations leave men wrought with their own hurts or bearing these pains along with their wives, family members or friends. So moms, as another Mother’s Day approaches, let us do more than sit back and relax. Let us be truly grateful for our arms that hold our children, for hearts that are full of love and for lives that are forever blessed. Let us also ask God to open our hearts and eyes to those around us that will be hurting. Who can we send a card to? Who could we surprise with some flowers? Who can we embrace and say I see you? Who can we pray for? If we ask, God will show us and we may just be surprised at how many we’ll see.

Pet Set Pet Care Tip What Is Shedding?

By Dixie Popham - Owner, Pet Set Grooming, 3313 Highway 5 Across from Publix, 770.949.0579 Dogs naturally lose old or damaged hair by shedding. Although shedding is a normal process for dogs, the amount and frequency of hair that is shed often depends upon their health and breed type. It can also depend on the season—many dogs develop thick coats in the winter that are then shed in the spring. Dogs who are always kept indoors, however, are prone to smaller fluctuations in coat thickness and tend to shed fairly evenly all year. While you cannot stop a healthy dog from normal shedding, you can reduce the amount of hair in your home by brushing your dog regularly. Your veterinarian or groomer should be able to recommend a specific type of brush or comb that will work best for your dog’s hair type. What seems like excessive shedding can be normal for some dogs, but it can also be the result of stress, poor nutrition or a medical problem. Your veterinarian can best determine if your dog’s hair loss is part of the normal shedding process or is a symptom of an underlying disorder. Excessive shedding can sometimes be prevented through proper nutrition. Quality pet-food manufacturers work hard to include the right amount of nutrients so that supplements are not needed, but dogs with allergies and/or sensitivities still might need to experiment with different brands and formulations to discover which food works best for them. Add omega-3 oils into your dog’s daily foods or administer as a supplement. When used in combination with other measures such as feeding a better diet, additional omega-3s can

reduce dog shedding by calming inflamed skin, decreasing dandruff and improving overall coat texture. Give your dog regular baths. Regular baths encourage loose hair to fall out in the tub (or outside) instead of on your furniture. However over-bathing can cause dry skin, which causes fur to fall out.

Trust “Trust in the Lord with all of your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.” Proverbs 3:5-6 As a follower of Jesus I have returned to this verse many times. Usually it is the times when I cannot understand circumstances going on around me. The fact of the matter is life is going to have blessings and it is going to have sorrows. What a comfort to know if we are looking to God he will direct our path. He has a view of life we do not. He knows the best roads to take even when it is not clear to us. He is there for us through life’s blessings and life’s sorrow. The question then becomes “Are we trusting God with all of our heart?” How do we trust God with all of our heart? The answer is found in the next verse. Don’t trust in your own understanding, but acknowledge God and who he is. As a young adult I remember coming to the realization that the finite mind of man can never comprehend the infinite mind of God. In other words - my understanding will never compare to the understanding of God. So by having faith in the understanding of God, I am able to fully trust Him. ~Missy Article sponsored by Discovery Church, an Acts 29 church plant next to Walmart & QuikTrip in Villa Rica. www.thediscoverychurch.org
