He will be greatly missed, especially by Barbara and Nestor their devoted Border terrier. Colin and Barbara retired to Powys some years ago. Colin was a larger than life character, and many of us have some very happy memories of him at many functions running the disco or playing his drums. Colin’s funeral will be at Hereford Crematorium on Thursday 8th November at 3pm. Barnstorming barn dance success

Thank you to everyone who came to the Ysgol Bro Famau PTFA Barn Dance on Sat 29th September. It was great to see so many people there joining in with the dancing and enjoying themselves. The prize for the ‘best barn dance attire’ went to Christine with her pink cowboy hat. There were lots of others getting into the spirit of things with check shirts too! Thanks to everyone’s support we have raised £1280 which will go towards new reading books at school. We are

Church News Remembrance Sunday We will be having our Remembrance Service on Sunday November 11th at the time of 10.15. It will be a short reflective service followed by a procession to the Memorial Stone in time for the commemoration at 11 am. Thank You To everyone who worked so very hard in the preparation beforehand and work on the evening (and the following day) for the Harvest Supper. The food was delicious, the hall looked splendid and, most importantly, we had a great attendance and everyone enjoyed each other's company. There are far, far too many people to thank individually but special mention goes to Noel and Gay for the onerous task of transporting all the crockery and cutlery from Gwernaffield, and for obtaining permission for us to use the kitchen. The church has never charged an attendance fee. We have always felt that the evening is a gift from the church to the community. However we did have some generous donations and a splendid raffle, and the money raised totalled more than ÂŁ180. Apologies For confusing people by posting an incorrect Communion Service time in September. All services are at 9.30 am except the first Sunday (which is a Communion at 11.15 am), and Fifth Sunday (which is a joint Bro Famau service in one of the five churches of the group at 10.30). And of course there is a different time specifically for Remembrance Sunday. Christmas Services haven't been finalised yet, but there will be a Carol Service in the lead up to Christmas and a Crib Service on Christmas Eve. We will publicise services via email when they are arranged. Open the Book Kathy and Wendy have restarted 'Open the Book' at Ysgol Bro Famau. 'Open the Book' is a structured way of presenting dramatised Biblical stories in a fun and accessible way. 'Grown ups' make idiots of themselves by dressing up in Biblical costume and are acted off the stage by the children who also take part. Any volunteers are always welcomed to join in the fun, please contact Wendy or Kathy for more information.

Church News In Loving Memory There will be another chance to remember loved ones who have died on Friday 2nd November ( All Souls Day). The service will be at at the Church of St Mary the Virgin, Cilcain at 7.00 pm. It will include music and readings, together with the opportunity to have the name of loved ones read out, and to light a candle. Messy Church. Continues to thrive! We fought the battle of Jericho in September and in October we talked about the parable of the Sower, together with making leaf lanterns and decorating acorn cookies . All accompanied children are welcome. Messy Church is at 4.00 pm on the third Sunday of the month at Gwernaffield and in the school holidays at Mold/New Brighton( contact Kathy and Wendy for details). We will be talking about Light in Advent in November and of course we will have Messy Christmas in December! Bins Despite all of our requests, the bins are still not being used in the way they are clearly labelled to be used. A bonus from this is that the church flowers have been fed all year from flower food left on plastic wrappings in the recycling bins! More seriously, there was broken glass left in one of the dustbins recently. Please can people who take the time to visit and care for their loved ones' graves show the same care and respect to the people who have to empty the bins? And Finally It's time to start thinking about Christmas Cakes and puddings. If you want to have the stress taken out of cooking or shopping for them, you can contact Wendy (07840 353690). She will make them to order for you for Church funds.

WORKING PARTY ON THE PARK 10am on Saturday 10 November Please come along to help maintain this great local facility. A few hours work every few months is all it takes to keep the park in order - it’s great Saturday morning exercise too! Please bring forks, rakes, spades, wheelbarrows etc. Your Park needs Your Support See you there!

Llanferres Over 60s Club Our October meeting was very interesting. Mr. Tony Griffiths showed a film, made by him, of the artist Bernard Williams talking to the camera about his years spent on the continent during the German occupation and his survival and return home with the help of the Resistance Movements. During the lovely summer our two outings were most enjoyable. The first was a boat trip on the aqueduct from Llangollen, when we enjoyed afternoon tea whilst sailing. The second was to Liverpool to see the Terracotta Warriors before going to the coast at Formby, where the Gormley figures stand knee deep in water. We had refreshments at Gordale Garden Centre on the way home.

Llanferres Parish Gardening Club At our September meeting our guest speaker was Kate Brophy of Fryer's Rose Nursery. In her demonstration, she began by collecting pollen from donor rose flowers and pollinating host plants. With pollen from 10 - 12 Rose varieties used to pollinate 10 -12 stems on a growing rose - this started the long process of producing new varieties of rose bush. The seed from this pollination were then sown. After two years, saplings were produced with a flower and perhaps 1,500 will be chosen from 25,000 samples grown. After growing on these roses for 5 - 6 years, perhaps two to six will be chosen to be grown on as new

varieties and produced for sale for us to plant in our gardens. In all, eight years of intensive precise labour, on a hit or miss practice that is for our benefit. The next meeting of the club will be on Monday 12th November at 7.30pm when we hold our Annual General Meeting, which is followed by a buffet this year supplied by the club. ADVANCE NOTICE. We will be having our usual Sunday lunch at Plas Hafod on January 13th 2019 - 12.30 for 1.00pm. Mrs. Joan Almond Hon Secretary â„Ą01352 810808

Llanferres Parish Gardening Club 44th Annual Show A big thank you to everyone who contributed to the success of the Annual Village Show on 1st September, including exhibitors, judges, those who attended the show and those who helped in the task of setting up and clearing up afterwards. Unfortunately, the number of entries was significantly lower than in most recent years though not quite as low as in 2016. However, despite the poor growing season the village managed to put on a show worth seeing. The art and junior sections were omitted from the 2018 schedule due to the low number of entries in these sections for a number of years. These can, of course, be reinstated in future years if more entries are forthcoming. If anyone has any ideas about what could be included in the show, we would love to hear from you. Why not come along to one of our meetings - everyone is welcome. I would encourage everyone to get involved, enter the show and support this traditional village event. The proceeds of the auction were, as usual, donated to the Senior Citizens Welfare Fund. We look forward to an even more successful 45th Annual Show in 2019.

‘A walk on the Wilde Side’ I am a big fan of Robin Page the conservationist, farmer, broadcaster and writer and look forward to the arrival of my wife's Lady magazine to read his article. This week he wrote about empty skies with complete lack of bird life around his farm in Cambridgeshire. I have seen a big drop in bird numbers here and think we are in the in between time when the summer migrants have left and the winter visitors haven't arrived in any great numbers yet. Maybe they are finding food in the fields and woodland and haven't had the need to visit our bird tables. We can't blame it all on climate change.

in front of me. I stopped the car to avoid running over them, they both took off, the hawk went one way and the lucky wood pigeon the other way.

One of the things I saw when I moved to Maeshafn was the change in bird species. Those I took for granted on the Wirral became a rare sight. The house sparrow has become an endangered species and the starling is occasionally seen in flocks descending on a field to feed, not in the garden or getting warm by the chimney pot. So I was thrilled to see lots of starlings on a recent visit to Formby, wandering around our feet in the hope that we might drop a few crumbs. What I This year has been a year of extremes. hadn't seen before was how handsome a A long drawn out winter and a long dry bird the starling is. spell and very warm summer. I have read a very good book about weather I am still asked where have the extremes entitled Since Records Began hedgehogs gone. A note from your County Councillor As winter approaches I have reminded the County Council of the commitment it made to enforce the no parking policy in Cadole and Loggerheads when it snows. I am pleased to confirm that the County’s Officers are on standby and that the Police are also preparing their team of local officers and PCSOs to support the council staff. In the last News and Views I reported that the owners of the Aberduna Quarry were considering an application to use the quarry as a land fill site. I had suggested to them that they met with both the Llanferres and the Gwernymynydd Community Councils to explain their proposals and Mr Gill has now attended both Councils and members of the public took up the opportunity to join our Community Councillors in a question and answer session. At this stage no formal application has been submitted and I believe that the Quarry owners are just testing the water before they make any decisions. Councillors and members of the public raised concerns about the impact of having up to fifty lorries a week on the roads to and from the quarry. Those present also asked the owners to consider other options. I had already raised my concerns with Mr Gill and stated that I felt he would get little support for his proposal because most inert waste from the construction industry is now recycled on site, the fact that there is another land fill quarry nearby and that the quarry is within the AONB. I also knew that there would be considerable opposition from the local residents in both our ward and the Flintshire ward of Gwernymynydd. The ball is now in the Quarry owners court and if they submit a formal planning application I will call a public meeting to discuss the way forward. These types of

planning applications will take months to complete and many public bodies will be involved in the process. In the meantime if anyone feels that they could be affected by such a development and would like to be added to my Aberduna Quarry mailing list, please drop me an e-mail and I will be happy to include you in any future up dates. You need to confirm that you are happy for me to retain your e-mail address for these up dates only. Can I remind everyone that the County Councils holds lists of those people looking for affordable housing in each area across the county. The local affordable housing lists help the County Council assess the demand from those who want to both buy and rent in each community. The county also allocates land for affordable housing in the current and future Local Development Plans based on the numbers on the affordable housing lists. It is therefore important that you register if you want to get your foot on the housing ladder in any of any of our communities. Please see the county’s website for details. I attended the Recreational Ground meeting last Tuesday where concerns were expressed about the support the current committee needs to continue. Some of the officers have been in their roles for over ten years and just a little help from other residents would lighten their work load. Many hands make light work and if everyone could do a little a lot would be achieved. Please look out for the working party events and if you can help out on the committee please let the officers know. I am chasing the following issues. The installation of yellow Zig Zag lines outside the school gates. These have been agreed but the work has not yet been completed. The pruning of the trees at the Maeshafn Junction on the A494. A note from your County Councillor dispute as to who is responsible for these trees. Is it in Flintshire or Denbighshire or is it the responsibility of the Trunk Road Agency!! I have written to the Welsh Minister Ken Skates about the delay in the traffic improvements at Loggerheads which were promised last year. I have enclosed a copy of his letter confirming the work to be undertaken just to jog his memory. I have asked to meet with Highways Officers to try and find where the water has gone from the village pond in Tafarn Y Gelyn. Despite all the recent rain none of it has ended up in the pond. I joined the pond working party on Sunday 14th and the group cleared the ground for the winter.

proposed changes to the County Council wards in Denbighshire. As previously reported all three Community Councils in the ward submitted a case for retaining the ward as it is and they also suggested a new ward name - The Alyn Valley Ward. Sadly the Commission has ignored our representations and they have once again proposed moving the Llanferres Community Council area into the Llanbedr County Council ward. Members of the public and the Community Councils have until the 13th December 2018 to comment further on these proposals and it looks as if once these are agreed the changes will be in place for the next County Council elections in 2022.

I have been in touch with the county about the small stretch of road outside the Youth Hostel which Flintshire did not resurface when they were repairing their section of the road. Again it looks like a question of who does it belong to, Flintshire or Denbighshire. It is such a shame that the two councils do not talk to one another in these circumstances because it could save a lot of time, money and extra work if they did!!

If you want to comment you need to visit the Boundary Commission for Wales Website.

Captain John Pryor Readers are no doubt aware that lead mining provided an important source of employment in our Community for several centuries. Captain John Pryor was a lead mining engineer who lived on the western outskirts of Mold. He was involved in a series of lead mines both within, and close to, our Community as well as being the manager of Alltami Colliery for three years. He was held in high esteem in the locality and was noted for both being remarkably honest (the lead mining industry included a fair share of rogues) and hard working. He was elected to the Mold Local Board in 1862. This body dealt with such matters as local finance, sanitation, highways, water supplies etc. He served on the Board for some 15 years and was elected chairman in 1875. In 1863, at the age of 33, he was appointed mine captain at the Glan Alyn Mine which was located in the present day Loggerheads Country Park. During his time there he was responsible for the installation of a large water wheel, which was used to pump water from the mine to permit working to a depth of 90 yards from the surface. (The water wheel pit has recently undergone conservation treatment as some of the stonework was unstable.) However, he is better known for his involvement in two other local lead mines. Namely the East Pant du Mine, just over the county border in what is now Nercwys Forest, and the Aberduna Mine, at S-bend, Maeshafn. In the former case the operators soon ran into financial problems and ceased work while they sought further funding. However, the mineral owners (the Lords of Mold) ejected them from the mine for failing to work it continuously (a

condition of the lease). John Pryor objected to this and sued the Lords of Mold, but to no avail and the mine was taken over by another party. He took charge of the Aberduna Mine in 1872 and spent some time getting the mine into operation as it had been abandoned some years earlier. He was convinced that the mine was going to be very productive and was very bullish about its prospects. However, although some lead ore was found, it was not in the quantities that were forecast at the launch of the mining company. Furthermore the First Great Depression had started in 1873 and John Pryor came under great pressure to produce a return for the shareholders. However the income from the sale of the lead ore raised was insufficient to even pay for the mine development. The directors of the company were also unpaid and John Pryor even offered to donate his shareholding to raise funds for further development of the mine. However, the combined stress arising from the unsuccessful legal action against the Lords of Mold and the lack of success at the Aberduna Mine resulted in John Pryor undergoing a complete breakdown. This was followed shortly by his death in 1877 at the age of 47 years. He left a wife and a young child. It subsequently transpired that the mine had been effectively worked out by earlier workers and that there was very little remaining lead to be found.
