New Rectory Do you think Adrian and Diane have been in their new home for a year? Well, they moved in on 26th May last year! I know they had a few teething problems with lights and telephone/computer connection initially but I believe they have settled in well. Adrian came to our house quite a few times after they moved in to use my computer for emails. He has said since that it made him realise that we can manage better than we realise without instant communication. Gwen Rogers Gwen is the oldest member of our congregation, though our organist, Gwen Edwards, keeps telling us that she is not much younger. Gwen has kept very good health until recently but her son, Tim (you may know Tim Rogers from the days when he was on ITV delivering news from the North), realised she was unwell when he was spending a few days with her. After a short spell in hospital Gwen is recovering well and sends her thanks for everyone's help and kind messages of good will. Ray Robinson Sadly Ray Robinson has died unexpectedly of a heart attack whilst in hospital receiving treatment for cancer. He will be sadly missed by his son, brother, Ada and many other local family and friends. I remember Ray during the time he was, amongst others, very kind to Grace Hobson (another of our elderly organists) who lived next door until aged over 100. Ray used to cook for her and I'm told even made a hole in the hedge so that he didn't have to keep going down his steep steps and up those next door! Ray's funeral was at St Berres at 2.00 pm on Thursday 24th May.

Church News Wedding On a happier note, two Weddings were booked in for May, only one of which has been celebrated as I write. This was the marriage between Iain Robertson and Fiona McCreddin who come from Nottingham, but the Bride used to live in Cadole and still has family there. They were lucky to have a sunny and pleasant afternoon. The next is on 26th May. Easter - thanks from Gay Headley Thanks to all who generously donated cash and/or flower arranging skills to prepare our glorious Easter decorations. Special thanks once again to Mrs Joan Almond for her talents and to Price Jones for providing amazingly good value long-lasting flowers. (They deserve the plug!) Parish Picnic for families A social event for the 5 Parishes in the Bro Famau group will take place on Rhydymwyn 'Donkey' field by the cricket pavilion at noon on Saturday 23rd June. Bring your own food and drink and have fun entering a treasure hunt and other activities. There will be display boards giving information about each Parish and it will be an opportunity to meet people from other parishes. Christian Aid Collection Very many thanks to those who collected for this worthwhile cause and to those who gave so generously. The weather wasn't too bad for doing the collections, I'm pleased to say. The total collected in Llanferres and Maeshafn was £413 and this amount will be combined with money raised from a coffee morning in Gwernaffield."

Monthly recipe from CAFFI FLORENCE CLASSIC CORONATION CHICKEN Coronation chicken was first served as part of the Queen’s coronation banquet and has endured and indeed continued to gain popularity ever since. This recipe has a CAFFI FLORENCE twist with some chunky fruit rather than a smooth sauce. It can of course be served using cold roast chicken rather than specially prepared as in this recipe. 4 chicken breasts 1 onion, sliced 3 whole peeled garlic cloves 1 tsp sea salt, 10 whole black peppercorns For the sauce 1 tbsp olive oil 1 onion 1 tbsp curry powder 1 tbsp tomato purée 75g dried apricots chopped finely 75g sultanas 1 cooking apple, peeled, cored and chopped 85ml white wine 150ml water or stock 1 bay leaf salt and freshly ground black pepper squeeze of lemon juice 350ml good-quality mayonnaise 2 tbsp crème fraiche Method Place the chicken in a saucepan with a tightly fitting lid, cover with water and add the onion, garlic, salt and peppercorns. Bring to the boil and simmer for 30 minutes &leave to cool completely. To make sauce heat the oil in a pan. Add chopped onion and cook gently for 3-4 minutes. Add the curry powder and cook for a further two minutes, stirring well. Add the apricots, sultanas, apple, tomato purée, wine, water and bay leaf. Bring the mixture to the boil & reduce to a simmer & cook uncovered, for about 10 minutes until fruit has soften. Set aside to cool. Gradually fold in the mayonnaise, crème fraiche and season with salt, pepper & lemon juice. To serve, arrange the portioned chicken on a large platter, pour the sauce over the top and serve immediately with rice & a green salad.

Badminton Club news Sunday 22nd April was the Gareth Coppack tournament at Deeside Leisure Centre. This tournament is open to all under 15 teams who play in the North East Wales Junior Badminton League. Llanferres entered an A and B team in the competition. They both played really well, both making it through to the quarter final rounds.

The B team had a very unlucky draw, coming up against the current best team in the league, Mold A. The A team also had tough matches against Flint A , losing out by only one point to get to the semi-finals. Well done to everyone who took part and thank you to the parents who helped with lifts and managing teams. Also, each year an award is given to one player from the league for fair

play. After each junior league match, teams vote for their favourite player from the opposing teams, and these votes are counted up at the end of the season. Llanferres have won this award quite a few times now, and we didn't disappoint. This year the sports personality award was given to Declan Bonar. Well done to all players who have taken part in the junior league this season and a big thank you to the parents who have helped with lifts . Thanks, Moira

Gardening Club news Llanferres Parish Gardening Club The meeting held on Monday May 14th had quite a business ethic to start. Our new Treasurer, Mr Tony McKinstry, is now in place, so he had produced a balance sheet to cover the period from our AGM in November 2011. Still a healthy balance! Mrs Glenys Roberts is to be offered an Honorary Membership in recognition of the support she gave to her late husband, the past Treasurer of the club, and also her hard work particularly for our Annual Show. Show Secretary, David Jones, confirmed final details for our schedule and also three new judges. Our guest speaker was Gareth Jones - farm manager of the Rhug Estate. In his talk "Organic Growing" Mr Jones described a different aspect than most gardeners recognise. Explaining his career at the Rhug Estate and how since 1998 the organic system had been introduced and developed. No sprays or fertilizers are used - only natural cropping. With white clover sown and cropped for five years, red clover two-three years, both grown to fix nitrogen in the soil. Then two years of speciality cereal triticale - taller growing to smother weeds - together with oats and stubble turnips (all grown to provide food for the animals) thus 5-7 years of rotation is achieved. There are also chickens, turkeys and geese to add to the diversification at the Rhug Estate in the three farms of Lord Newborough’s enterprise. Questions and discussion with Mr Jones followed, which showed our members' general curiosity and interest. Our next meeting will be on Monday June 11th when David Shiel, senior Ranger of the AONB, will give a talk entitled "Moel Findeg". As always, visitors are welcome - entrance fee £1. COME AND SING!! Hi! I’m Jennie. I’ve just moved into Ruthin from East Yorkshire. I’m a singing and piano teacher and I would really love to start an informal singing group. I’m a strong believer in two things; 1 Singing together makes people happy 2 Tea and cake make people happy! How about some of us start meeting to have a sing, drink some tea and eat some cake? Don’t worry if you don’t read music; you don’t have to. If you’re nervous about coming alone, bring a friend! Come if you think you can’t sing, come if you love singing, come if you’re just curious, come if you love cake ~ you might just find yourself singing!

Where? Llanbedr Village Hall When? Thursdays 5.30-6.30, starting on Thurs 14th June. How much? £5 per session If you’re interested just let me know: Jennie Coates 07816 508 900 j.coates88@hotmail.com

Nature Notes This seems to be the year for Redpolls. A local resident telephoned to say he had a mixed flock of about forty Redpolls and Siskins in his garden and at the same time we had both species in our garden feeding at the seed or nut basket and bathing in the pond. But which race? There are at least five possibilities. Lesser, Mealy, Greater (or Greenland) and Arctic redpoll. The most likely is the Lesser redpoll as that is the resident British race. Mealy redpolls are a Continental species which come to Britain in some winters but usually stay on the east coast but do sometimes spread across to the west while the other two, from northern Scandinavia or Greenland are rare vagrants but can turn up at times. As they all have somewhat variable plumage it is very difficult to separate them. For those who do not know these birds, they are like a small female House sparrow with tit-like behaviour, a pink forehead, a small black bib and a yellow beak. The males sometimes have a pink flush to the breast. All species have these features except the juveniles which have no pink. A resident of Maeshafn telephoned to say that he had an Arctic redpoll in his garden, which would be unusual but not impossible. Among the ones bathing in our garden pond was one with a yellow forehead. I have consulted all my books and looked on the Internet but I cannot find any reference to a yellow forehead so I must assume it to be just an aberration.

Redpolls used to be a quite common species, feeding on the seeds of birch and alder, especially near water, but from the 1950s they went into a steep decline and became rather rare. However, in more recent times they seem to have made something of a comeback and numbers have increased again. This spring(?) has been unusual for birds. As I write, (16th May) Siskins are still coming to the garden whereas normally they have dispersed to their breeding areas and Bramblings are still here instead of being back in northern Europe. Swallows and House martins arrived but then many of them seemed to disappear again and there are not that many about. No doubt a little warm weather will have them back. Conversely, some summer migrants like Chiffchaffs, Willow warblers and Blackcaps are here in good numbers and singing lustily. I heard my first Cuckoo and saw my first Redstart on the 12th May. It was also pleasing to hear the loud laughing call of a Green woodpecker here in Llanferres. Unlike the common Great-spotted woodpecker, this species seldom 'drums' on trees but makes its presence known with a loud, laughing call sometimes described as a 'yaffle'. Very well camouflaged amongst the trees, they can sometimes be seen on the ground hunting ants, their favourite food.
