Welcome Local residents are urged to remain vigilant, as a series of burglaries have been reported lately. If you spot anything suspicious, or you recall anything over the Christmas period, when a number of incidents were reported, please notify the police on 101

Welcome to the first edition of News & Views for 2019. Thanks to all our contributors once again for helping us to produce it. January is often a depressing month with the prospect of cold, dark winter evenings and the ‘back to work blues’ (for some of us!) So it’s time to think positive and enjoy some of what ‘s on offer in the community - quiz nights feature at both the Druid and the Miners’ Arms and there’s Burns Night to look forward to. Or why not take up a new hobby or begin to tackle that garden - there’s help on offer form the Gardening Club (see page 15), and the Over 60s, Whist, Badminton, Bowls Clubs and other local organisations all offer a warm welcome to new members. Plus Avatar Fitness have an offer on gym membership to get you started. We hope you all had a lovely Christmas and we wish you a healthy and a very Happy New Year! Best wishes, Paul & Siobhan Email: news@llanferres.org

QUIZ NIGHT

Llanferres Over 60s Club

The inaugural Druid Inn Quiz Night took place on December 18th and was very much enjoyed by all who attended. Host, Derek Robinson, kept us all entertained and taxed our brains with a range of questions.

At the Over Sixties Club November Meeting we were taken on a fascinating journey from The Alps to the Dordogne thanks to the wonderful photography and commentary by Dave Cummins.

The fun culminated in a ‘Play Your Cards Right’ finale, in which Siobhan Gothorp failed miserably to win the £50 jackpot, so funds were added to the pot on the evening, which means that next month will have a jackpot prize of £101!!

In December we were entertained by the pupils of Ysgol Bro Famau with their delightful interpretation of the Nativity. which put us all in the Christmas Spirit. Mince pies and a welcome cup of tea was organised by Pat Armstrong.

News & Views is benefiting from the proceeds of the quiz evening. The next quiz is on January 15th more details on page 12.

We do not have a meeting in January. Our next meeting is on Tuesday 12th February at 2.15pm. One of our members will be telling "Snippets from her Life" Everyone is welcome.

Church News Happy New Year! The photo was taken at the most recent 'Open the Book' visit to Bro Famau School. Daniel played the part of a prison guard who was watching over Paul and Silas who had been thrown into jail. Paul and Silas were released from jail when an earthquake happened (special effects ably produced by the audience!). We will be back at the start of term to continue the story of Paul's adventures. We have had a great welcome from Ysgol Bro Famau and we really enjoy our time with the fabulous children and staff.

Messy Church This continues at Gwernaffield on the third Sunday of the month at 4pm to 5.30 (ish). We will be talking about the theme of 'God's Promises' over the next few meetings and we will be looking at the story of 'Jacob's Ladder' at the next meeting on 20th January. Everyone is welcome.

Christmas Thank you to everyone who worked so hard to ensure that the services went so smoothly. The church looked beautiful and it was great to welcome faces old and new to the services. The Carol and Crib Service were particularly well attended and the collection at the Carol Service raised over ÂŁ100 for the Food Bank. Thank you for your generosity.

Churchyard You may have noticed that Hugo and Ieuan Watts have been working hard in the churchyard to clear the tree branches which were brought down in the high winds (fortunately no damage was done by the wind to the gravestones). We are less grateful to the parties who brutally hacked at the bottom of the variegated holly trees taking a significant quantity of cuttings, leaving their mess behind and unsightly damage to the trees. This is unfortunately one of several instances of trespass or dumping during last year both in the churchyard and church owned footpath from Rectory Lane.

Church Decorating The church decorating team, who made a beautiful job of the Christmas decorations again this year, would like to pass their thanks onto Sue Shaw of

Church News Evergreens, Ruthin market. In exchange for a few clippings from the variegated holly trees (before they were hacked! )they provided the beautiful font decorations and cross for the church door.

Church Bins Another year, same old problem! We have photographic evidence below of what someone thinks is reasonable to put in a recycling bin (what can we say?!)

Congratulations Young Henry Stroud is to be baptised by his mother Lara at St Asaph Cathedral on 5th January. We are so pleased to welcome him into the family of the Church and extend our felicitations and greetings to all his family who will be travelling over from the United States for this happy occasion.

And Finally Thank you to Sean who passed on a link to the Nativity Service of 1996. So wonderful to see the children (now all grown up, some with children of their own) again https://youtu.be/Vbrd93fZ6Ms

PTFA News Thank you to everyone who came to the very successful Ysgol Bro Famau Christmas Fair helping the PTFA to raise an amazing £970. We have spent more than we have raised the last couple of years and had run funds completely down so it is great that we will now be able to buy some new reading books for the children. We were very grateful to North Hills Farm who brought two of their reindeer for all to see, and also to Santa who met with the children. We are also thankful to all the local craftspeople who came and sold their crafts, meaning there was plenty for the grown ups to enjoy too.

Our Christmas Auction supported by lots of local and not so local businesses helped us raise a further £570 - again thank you to the donors and everyone who placed a bid. Our next planned fundraiser is likely to be a Family Beetle Drive / Quiz in Eryrys one Friday evening sometime in the New Year – keep a look out for further details.

COUNTRY PARK PAINTERS .......Art Exhibition Yet another successful Exhibition was held in the Country Park. Comments in the Visitors Book were very complimentary and many paintings were sold. This year the public vote for the favourite painting was closer than ever with Annie Hughes' painting 'Snow Leopard' beating Pat Armstrong's calligraphy 'Osprey' by one vote. Annie will keep the group's trophy for the next year. The group also held a fund raising day which was well supported .This year the proceeds were divided between the North Wales Cancer Treatment Centre, Ysbyty Glan Clwyd and the Country Park. Thank you to all who supported us.

Remembrance Sunday was observed by a service in Church, where we remembered the centenary of the end of the 1st World War, all casualties, including the sacrifice of local people. The congregation progressed to the Memorial Stone where over 60 people assembled. Dr. Wendy Shillitoe opened with prayers, the Last Post heralded the 2 minutes Silence. The Kohima Epitaph was said and this year wreaths were laid by Ex Serviceman Richard Hughes and Constable Gareth Jaggard . The poignancy of the occasion was enhanced by the presence of two silhouettes of 1st World War soldiers, generously provided by Mr Tim Healey. Our Community together with millions of others shared the solemnness of the occasion.

The Miners Arms, Maeshafn In the mid-eighteenth century the Maesy-safn lead mine was very active. The first reference to an alehouse in the village was in 1750. It was sited in Pen y bryn Cottage, near the mine workings, and served the local population until about 1763. The mine then went into a decline and was worked in a low key way by small groups of miners. Eventually a new company took over the mine in 1823 and invested heavily installing new equipment and developing the underground workings. This attracted new mine workers and "ty un nos" houses sprung up and the village expanded. At about this time both the chapel and the Miners Arms were built. The first recorded mention of the latter in the County Alehouse Register was on 29 September 1826. The licensee was then Robert Edwards. In the early days beer was brewed in the Brewhouse at the southern end of the terrace. The licensee also possessed two small fields covering about two acres at Pantrhedynog at the top of Miners' Lane together with a half share in a stack yard, barn and cowhouse. The first description of the interior of the pub was given in the sale particulars of the contents in 1887. The layout remained unchanged until the late 1980s. The front door led into a tiny hall with stairs leading up to the bedrooms. A door on the right gave access to a parlour and a door on the left to a taproom and back kitchen. In the hall a tiny window in the wall on the left was used as a pay window for the lead miners. According to local tradition the pub was closed for one hour while the lead miners received their pay. The interior of the pub was extensively remodelled in the late twentieth century and the original features lost.

existence. There were a couple of minor infringements of the licensing regulations in 1907 and 1910. Only one publican committed a serious offence and this was after he had moved from the Miners Arms to take over the Druid Inn in Llanferres in 1919. This was Henry Brown who, during the First World War, had been chief clerk in the Recruiting Office at Chester. He was found guilty of obtaining credit for £250 without declaring that he was an undischarged bankrupt. He received a prison sentence of two months in 1922. One of the longest tenures was that of Pete and Elsie Plews who moved in in 1963. Elsie continued to run the pub after Pete's death in 1979 until her retirement in 1986. However she remained in the village and continued to play an active role in the social life of the village. One freezing night in the winter of 1879 customers in the bar were alarmed to hear a gunshot go off outside the pub. Rushing outside they discovered that a local villager, Robert Roberts, an engine driver, had fallen on ice and accidentally discharged one barrel of his shotgun into his side. He died almost instantly. The inquest into his death was held in the pub.

The only significant reported crime at the pub was some twenty years ago when Geoff (Mr Grumpy) and Maureen Rutherford were in occupation. Thieves gained access through the cellar door and stole a cash box containing £80. Geoff, together with the Mold and Buckley Lions, started an annual summer jazz concert in 1995 to raise money for charities. Which, in later years, included the charity Cardiac Risk in the Young which Geoff supported following the sudden death of his son. These concerts were very successful and Over 20 different licensees have been in continued for many years. residence since 1826. A Walk on the

THIS TIME OF YEAR I remind those of us who have wood burners to watch out for hibernating wasps when fetching logs in. Well this time, I got caught myself while bringing a bag of charcoal out of the shed. I was stung good and proper by a queen wasp, which left my hand swollen and painful for a few days. A normal wasp sting is just an irritant which a dab of vinegar will fix, a queen wasp means business.

Although not a shooting man myself, I know what a properly run shooting estate contributes to bird life with wide field margins, thick layered well maintained hedges, not mechanically scalped. With good game crops of seed producing mixtures sown in strips. These will provide food for a wide variety of finches, linnets and yellow hammers as well as partridge and pheasants. Whilst moving some fence posts and planks of wood, I discovered a few butterflies in a comatose state, hibernating and sheltered from any wet and cold. I had to change my plans and replace the posts and planks carefully and hope that they hadn't been awoken by my activity. I have provided a couple of areas for such hibernation, but they chose their own. We were finding ladybirds on our window ledges upstairs, so I was leaving windows

A young man who was working at my house was a farmers son, I was surprised on talking to him he wasn't familiar with lapwings and had never heard of corncrakes. The corncrake a common enough bird of my childhood and would call well into the night in summer, is now only found in rural Ireland. I hope the lapwing doesn't follow the same path. But I don't think agriculture will return to traditional crop rotation and hay meadows Happy New Year! Eddie Edie Wilde 01352 810271
