15 MAR – 9 MAY SEASON 2024 SPRING
THE NEW BOY JOHN SINGER SARGENT ROBOT DREAMS

WELCOME

With springtime comes an abundance of colour and variety, and that’s precisely what we are offering this season at Chichester Cinema at New Park.

We present fascinating stories from across the continents (‘The Settlers’ – Chile, ‘The New Boy’ – Australia); interesting characters from wide-ranging walks of life (Amy Winehouse – ‘Back to Black’. Rose Dugdale ‘Baltimore’); features released over a span of nearly a century (‘It Happened One Night’, 1934 to ‘Drive-Away Dolls’, 2024); animations (‘Robot Dreams’, ‘Migration’) and documentaries (‘Frida’); plus ballet, theatre, opera and an exhibition. All this to complement the emerging Spring colours and warming climes around us.

We kick off a new strand this season called ‘Cult of Cinema’. Not much explanation is needed here, except that on the last Thursday of the month you will be treated to the weird, wild and wonderfully cultish films that have left an indelible mark on the silver screen. We start with the remastered and reedited ‘Caligula’, and also include David Cronenberg’s unforgettable ‘Naked Lunch’ – in association with the Oxmarket Gallery’s exhibit on the Beat Poets.

Our Education Team continuously do us proud, with talk after talk that bring in wonderful audiences eager to discover new knowledge on a variety of filmmakers or film topics. This season we give you talks on the works of the stylish and quirky Coen Brothers; Japanese master Hirokazu Kore-Eda; serial award-winner and very influential Frank Capra; plus the writer Henry James’ women characters on screen.

March is Women’s History Month, and we commemorate and celebrate with films about women and by women. Look out for the classic ‘Mrs. Miniver’ which links to our recent talk ‘Housewives on the Homefront’, the documentary ‘Copa 71’ about the first women’s football world cup, ‘Cabrini’ which reveals the unbelievable life of Francesca Cabrini, and ‘Showing Up’ by the truly talented Kelly Reichardt.

Due to popular demand, and simply to give everyone another opportunity to see (or re-see) some of the amazing recent releases, we have brought back some of the Award Season winners such as ‘The Zone of Interest’, ‘Poor Things’ and ‘Oppenheimer’, as well as audience favourites ‘One Life’ and ‘Wicked Little Letters’. Do get in early for these as recent screenings sold out more often than not.

See you at the cinema

INTERNATIONAL PANORAMA: JAPAN PERFECT DAYS

A janitor in Japan drives between jobs listening to rock music in this absorbing slice-of-life drama which adds a quietly soaring gem to director Wim Wenders’ estimable filmography. Hirayama (Kôji Yakusho) seems utterly content with his simple life as a cleaner of toilets in Tokyo. Outside of his very structured everyday routine he enjoys his passion for music and for books. A series of unexpected encounters gradually reveal more of his past. This is a movie about art, exploring how in the midst of chaos, it’s not labour but the physical objects of beauty that we weave into our livespaperback novels, cassette tapes of favourite albums, carefully tended bonsai plants, a perfectly framed photograph - that structure and give our days meaning. A deeply moving reflection on finding beauty in the everyday world around us. A poem of extraordinary subtlety and beauty led by a remarkable performance by Yakusho. Not to be missed. (Subtitles)

PADRE PIO

Abel Ferrara’s new film is the story of a priest from a small Italian town who ends up being canonised as a Catholic saint. World War I has ended and Italian soldiers, broken but victorious, are returning to an impoverished village ruled by wealthy landowners. As events surrounding the first free election in Italy threaten to tear the village apart, Padre Pio (Shia LaBeouf) struggles with his own personal demons, ultimately emerging from his spiritual anguish to become one of Catholicism’s most venerated figures. ‘Padre Pio’ is a period film with a distinctively modern look, with typically interesting choices made by director Ferrara (‘Bad Lieutenant’, ‘Pasolini’), not known for adhering to cliched cinematic traits. SHOSHANA

Inspired by real events, this Michael Winterbottom political thriller is set in 1930s Tel Aviv, and is a smartly crafted and rigorously acted plea for tolerance and compassion.

Thomas Wilkin (Douglas Booth), who works in the anti-terrorist squad of the British Palestine Police force in Tel Aviv, a city ruled by British authorities trying to maintain increasingly difficult peace between the Palestinian and Jewish populations. He is in love with Shoshana Borochov (Irina Starshenbaum), the daughter of Dov Ber Borochov, the Zionist Labour co-founder. As the organisation known as Irgun works to push the Brits out of the region through whatever violent means possible, it naturally makes the romance between a Brit and a Jew increasingly difficult. Through Thomas and Shoshana’s relationship the film explores the way extremism and violence drives a wedge between people, forcing them to choose sides. This is a handsomely mounted period piece about a place and time in which friends were forced into becoming enemies, and Winterbottom draws an exceptionally solid performance from his leading lady. CLASSICS RESTORED & REISSUED DAYS

OF HEAVEN

A beautiful screen poem by Terrence Malick (‘The Tree of Life’) about life in America at the turn of the century, made all the better by this new 4K restoration.

In the early 20th century, Bill (Richard Gere) and Abby (Brooke Adams) are a Chicago couple on the run from the law who pose as brother and sister to find itinerant farm work in Texas. When an ailing young farmer (Sam Shepard) falls in love with Abby, Bill persuades her to take up with him, and then they can be rich together after he’s gone. Of course the plan goes wrong. This Malick masterpiece with transcendentally beautiful visuals is a fantastically rewarding experience, containing ideas and themes that would re-emerge in his later ‘The Tree of Life’ (2011).

SUN 17 MAR 12:30

To complement our ‘Housewives on the Homefront’ talk (9 Mar) in Women’s History Month, we present this classic moving drama about a middle-class English family learning to cope with war, told in a series of dramatic vignettes.

The family, headed by the lovely and gracious matriarch Kay Miniver (Greer Garson), endures the departure of the father Clem (Walter Pidgeon) for the beaches at Dunkirk; the discovery of a wounded Nazi pilot; the death of the daughter-in-law; and the entry of the son into the Air Force. Shot in the middle of WWII about a family surviving the beginning of that war, this terrific film was the winner of six Oscars, including Best Picture, Director, Actress, Supporting Actress, Screenplay and Cinematography.

INTERNATIONAL PANORAMA: CHILE THE SETTLERS LOS COLONOS

This must-see Chilean film was the worthy winner of the Un Certain Regard prize at Cannes 2023.

Chile, 1901. Three horsemen embark on an expedition, tasked with securing a wealthy landowner’s vast property. Accompanying a reckless British lieutenant (Sam Spruell) and an American mercenary (Mark Stanley) is mestizo (half European, half native American) marksman Segundo (Camilo Arancibia), who comes to realise their true mission is to violently ‘remove’ the indigenous population. This ‘Western’ is shot with an intense beauty leaving the viewer with a stronger understanding of the message delivered by the director – amazingly, his first feature. It is a striking but bleak portrayal of colonisation and genocide, but there is integrity to its brutality, and an important point waiting in its curveball of a final act. (Some subtitles)

MET OPERA

Two singers at the height of their powers - soprano Nadine Sierra and tenor Benjamin Bernheim - come together as the star-crossed lovers in Charles Gounod’s Shakespeare adaptation.

Yannick Nézet-Séguin is on the podium to conduct one of the repertoire’s most romantic scores. Bartlett Sher’s staging also features baritone Will Liverman and tenor Frederick Ballentine as the arch-rivals Mercutio and Tybalt, mezzo-soprano Samantha Hankey as the mischievous pageboy Stéphano, and bass-baritone Alfred Walker as Frère Laurent. “The chemistry that Damrau and Grigolo engender is too contagious to ignore and that makes this ‘Romeo et Juliette’ a truly thrilling and, at times, sexy experience.” OperaWire. ONE LIFE

Following two weeks of sell-out screenings in January, we give you the opportunity to see (or revisit) this moving film, with a superb lead performance by Anthony Hopkins.

Nicholas Winton was a well-to-do stockbroker who, at the start of the Second World War, is so horrified by unfolding events that he heads off to Prague to do something, anything, he can to help the terrified young refugees fleeing Hitler. Everyone thinks he is crazy – including his mother, played by Helena Bonham-Carter but he somehow manages to organise visas and trains to get hundreds of them to safety in the UK; what has since become known as the Kindertransport. Winton was sometimes called the British Oskar Schindler, and the parallels go beyond their acts of extreme kindness: both men were completely consumed by the task they undertook and never able to focus on the people that they did save, only those that they failed to save. The wonderful Lena Olin plays Nicholas’ wife, Johnny Flynn is great as the younger Winton, but this is unquestionably Hopkins’ film.

MADAMA BUTTERFLY ROH

Giacomo Puccini was entranced by David Belasco’s play ‘Madame Butterfly’ when he saw it in London in 1900. He drew on Japanese folk melodies to create his Butterfly score and each aria is imbued with distinct emotion.

With a score that includes Butterfly’s aria, ‘Un Bel dì, Vedremo’ (‘One Fine Day’) and the ‘Humming Chorus’, Puccini’s opera is entrancing and ultimately heart-breaking. He collaborated with librettists Luigi Illica and Giuseppe Giacosa (with whom he had created ‘La Bohème’ and ‘Tosca’) to adapt Cio-Cio-San’s tragic tale for the operatic stage. Moshe Leiser and Patrice Caurier’s exquisite production takes inspiration from 19th century European images of Japan. Asmik Grigorian and Hrachuhí Bassénz share the role of Cio-Cio-San, with Kevin John Edusei conducting. Sung in Italian with English subtitles.

DUNE: PART TWO

The film explores the mythic journey of Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet) as he unites with Chani (Zendaya) and the Fremen while on a warpath of revenge against the conspirators who destroyed his family.

Facing a choice between the love of his life and the fate of the known universe, he endeavours to prevent a terrible future only he can foresee. Director Denis Villeneuve says: “For me, this film is much better than ‘Part One’, there’s something more alive in it. There’s a relationship to the characters. I was trying to reach for an intensity and a quality of emotions.” The incredible cast also includes Rebecca Ferguson, Javier Bardem, Josh Brolin, Austin Butler, Léa Seydoux, Christopher Walken, Florence Pugh, Stellan Skarsgård and Charlotte Rampling.

INTERNATIONAL PANORAMA: ICELAND DRIVING MUM

Á FERÐ MEÐ MÖMMU

In this Nordic black comedy, the death of a man’s mother leads him on an Icelandic road trip to fulfil her last wish. A bizarre trip that will be the gamechanger he never dreamt of.

When Jon’s (Thröstur Leó Gunnarsson) domineering and possessive mother (Kristbjörg Kjeld) passes away, he sets out on a journey across Iceland to honour her last wish, to be buried in her hometown. Along with his beloved and loyal (scene-stealing) dog, they meet some unique locals along the way, making personal discoveries, questioning his entire life and having existential conversations with his deceased mother. There’s a heightened sense of the absurd in Odsson’s ‘Driving Mum’, which takes us on a beautiful Icelandic odyssey in crisply shot monochrome, perfectly accompanied by a wonderful score. If you liked ‘Fallen Leaves’ (Kaurismäki) earlier this year, then you will love this.

PERFORMANCE
Shadowed by the murder of his entire family, the young, wary Caligula (Malcolm McDowell) eliminates his devious adoptive grandfather (Peter O’Toole) and seizes control of the declining Roman Empire, descending into a spiral of depravity, destruction and madness. A treatise on the corrupting influence of power, this extensive reconstruction restores the complete performances of McDowell and Helen Mirren as the promiscuous ‘Caesonia’, from an unprecedented amount of never-before-seen footage. Mirren was cut to only 20 minutes on screen in the original version but has 60 minutes here. Tinto Brass was recruited for the project with a script by Gore Vidal. The script was eventually rewritten from scratch and by the end of the chaotic production, the film had doubled in budget and Brass was locked out of the edit by Bob Guccione. This is now a much better film than the original release, but do keep in mind that it is still very much an 18 certificate film. On her arrival to New York, Cabrini (Cristiana Dell’Anna) is greeted by disease, crime and impoverished children, so she sets off on a daring mission to convince the hostile mayor to secure housing and healthcare for society’s most vulnerable. She arrived with nothing, with broken English and poor health – a woman at a time when women had no voice, an Italian at a time when Italians were considered the lowest of the low – and went on to build one of the greatest business empires the world had ever known. Told by the pioneering women who participated, this is the extraordinary story of the 1971 Women’s Football World Cup, a tournament witnessed by record crowds that has been written out of sporting history - until now. Screening to celebrate International Women’s Day.

The goal of ‘Copa 71’, directed by Rachel Ramsay and James Erskine and executive produced by Serena and Venus Williams, is to make sure more people do know of this event, which drew the largest attendance ever for a women’s sporting event, more than 110,000 for a match in Mexico City’s Azteca Stadium. The film is filled with female empowerment anthems of the day, including Kiki Dee’s ‘I’ve Got the Music in Me’ and Nancy Sinatra’s ‘These Boots Are Made for Walking’. You can look at ‘Copa 71’ as the ‘Summer of Soul’ of women’s sport – the chronicle of a big event that took place more than 50 years ago and had been lost to time, making use of copious footage that has remained unseen for most of that period. THE NEW BOY

Cate Blanchett produces and stars in this new film by Australian First Nation director Warwick Thornton (‘Sweet Country’), which sees a nine-year-old Australian Aboriginal orphan boy arrive in the dead of night at a remote monastery run by a renegade nun.

Blanchett plays the head of a troubled monastery in the outback for abandoned children (some of whom weren’t actually “abandoned” but kidnapped). When a new boy arrives – magnificently played by first-time actor Aswan Reid - Sister Eileen’s concept of faith is challenged when he starts showing signs of miraculous powers. Thornton tells a tale from a dark chapter of his country’s history, when Australia kidnapped Aboriginal children and did everything to destroy their heritage and identity. He has drawn on his own unhappy experiences as a Kaytetye boy from Alice Springs, from where he was sent at the age of 11 to a Western Australian boarding school run by Benedictine monks. The film is gorgeous throughout, and Thornton shoots the landscapes of Australia as well as anyone, and a typically excellent score from Nick Cave and Warren Ellis helps make this a consistently interesting experience.

SHOWING UP

A sculptor preparing to open a new show must balance her creative life with the daily dramas of family and friends, in Kelly Reichardt’s vibrant and captivatingly funny portrait of art and craft. Lizzy (Michelle Williams) is not a famous artist; she is a sculptor who makes ceramic figures of women in her garage studio. She tries to finish her pieces before an upcoming gallery show, but life often intrudes on her art. She also works for her mother Jean (Maryann Plunkett) at a Portland art college giving her access to the kiln, run by the ever-cheerful Eric (André Benjamin). This is a funny and incisive drama about the artist’s life - it illuminates the numbing grind of real life when you are trying to make art - reuniting Reichardt and Williams (‘Wendy and Lucy’, ‘Meeks’ Cutoff’, ‘Certain Women’) to absorbing effect. Reichardt is a director who has not made a bad movie in 30 years.

MEMORY

A deeply layered and moving drama about past trauma and finding connection when you least expect it.

Sylvia (Jessica Chastain) is a social worker who leads a simple and structured life: her daughter, her job, her AA meetings. This is blown open when Saul (Peter Sarsgaard) follows her home from their high school reunion, and this surprise encounter profoundly impacts both of them as they open the door to the past. Chastain and Sarsgaard glow as wounded souls making a connection in a film where characters make questionable and sometimes troubling choices, and yet we understand why they do the things they do, and root fiercely for things to work between them.

L’ÎLE ROUGE

This visually exquisite, tender film about a boy growing up in a military air base on a former colony is a wonderful watch. From Robin Campillo who gave us the brilliant ‘120 Beats per Minute’ (2017).

At the beginning of the 1970s in Madagascar, a few armed forces and their families live in one of the last French military bases abroad, a relic of the ending French colonial empire. Influenced by his reading of the intrepid comic book heroine Fantômette, ten- year-old Thomas (Charlie Vauselle) sweeps with a curious glance what surrounds him. Beneath the carefree expatriate life, his eyes are gradually opening to another reality. Frequently poignant and always visually spectacular, Campilo’s film is a masterful portrayal of colonialism through a child’s eyes. (Subtitles)

This docufiction hybrid examines the disappearance and radicalisation of two Tunisian girls, Rahma and Ghofrane, through both dramatic re-enactments and interviews with the real-life subjects. Olfa Hamrouni, the mother of the four daughters, appears as herself. Her two eldest daughters were both arrested after the US military bombarded an Islamist State hideout in Sabratha in 2016. Ben Hania also appears as herself, announcing to Olfa and her two youngest daughters, Aya and Tayssir, that the three of them would be playing themselves in a series of reproduced moments alongside actors hired to portray their missing siblings. Originally previewed during the 2023 French Film Festival UK, this film received nothing but great comments from our viewers. (Subtitles)

FRIDA

An intimately raw and magical journey through the life, mind and heart of iconic artist Frida Kahlo. Told through her own words for the very first time.

Using only archival footage, photos and writings - with a throughline of the narrative directly from Kahlo’s own verse and the voices of those who loved her - this documentary crafts a truly full picture of the painter’s journey, weaving her paintings into the hallmarks of her life. This is the first time Kahlo’s life is narrated by her own writing and the project does an incredible job of combining all of its visual and auditory elements to shape the narrative of the artist’s world. The stories and emotions behind many of Kahlo’s works come clear into view and every thought behind the art is laid bare through the definitive intentions of the artist. Kahlo’s works are even brought vividly to life by a beautifully lyrical animation inspired by her unforgettable art. (Subtitles)

CLASSICS RESTORED & REISSUED CITY OF GOD

This electrifying, visceral picture is part tender coming-of-age film and part favela gang epic, a movie with dials cranked up to eleven – cinematography; music and sound; action; colour; heart; and incredible technical prowess.

In the poverty-stricken favelas (slums) of Rio de Janeiro in the 1970s, two young men choose different paths. Rocket (Phellipe Haagensen) is a budding photographer who documents the increasing drug- related confrontations in his neighbourhood, Cidade de Deus (City of God). José “Zé” Pequeno (Douglas Silva) is an ambitious drug dealer who uses Rocket and his photos as a way to increase his fame as a turf war erupts with his rival, “Knockout Ned” (Leandro Firmino da Hora). What makes ‘City of God’ so breathtaking is director Meirelles’ passion for these people - he gives us the colour, the music and the humour, and brings out extraordinary performances from all, including many non-actors.

“I’ve seen this film many times, and will be counting the days until I see it once again, this time on the New Park big screen. When pushed, this is the film I choose as my favourite of all time”. Walter Francisco – Head of Programming.

DRIVE-AWAY DOLLS

Written and directed by Ethan Coen, this is a fantastic comedy caper following two women in search of a fresh start. The story follows Jamie (Margaret Qualley), an uninhibited free spirit bemoaning yet another breakup with a girlfriend, and her demure friend Marian (Geraldine Viswanathan), who desperately needs to loosen up. In search of a fresh start, the two embark on an impromptu road trip to Tallahassee, Florida, but quickly learn their rented ride holds some secrets in its boot that a few bumbling criminals want to get their hands on. This is the first film from Ethan Coen directed without his brother and longtime collaborator Joel. The pair became iconic auteurs with the likes of ‘Fargo’ and ‘No Country for Old Men’. The cast also includes Pedro Pascal and Matt Damon.

HAMLET

To complement Ethan Coen’s new release ‘Drive-Away Dolls’ and our accompanying Coen brothers’ talk, we present this very much underappreciated Coen work, which follows a week in the life of a young singer as he navigates the Greenwich Village folk scene of 1961.

In 1961 New York City, folk singer Llewyn Davis (Oscar Isaac) is at a crossroads. Guitar in hand, he struggles against seemingly insurmountable obstacles to make a name for himself in the music world, but so far, success remains elusive. Relying on the kindness of both friends and strangers, Llewyn embarks on an odyssey that takes him from the streets of Greenwich Village to a Chicago club, where awaits a music mogul who could give him the big break that he desperately needs. Smart, funny and profoundly melancholy, ‘Inside Llewyn Davis’ finds the Coen brothers in fine form. Also stars Carey Mulligan, John Goodman, F. Murray Abraham and Justin Timberlake.

Shakespearian titan Ian McKellen stars in this thrilling and uniquely modern take on The Bard’s classic tragedy. The screening will include an exclusive recorded Q&A with Ian McKellen and Director Sean Mathias.

A tale of revenge that has stood the test of time, Shakespeare’s classic tragedy is reimagined for the modern day as a gripping psychological thriller! Transcending the confines of the stage in a uniquely modern take, the film utilises nearly every room of the Theatre Royal Windsor to transform it into the immortal Elsinore Castle, from basement dungeon to rooftop battlement. McKellen - reprising his lead role as Hamlet, a man who descends into madness as he seeks vengeance against his uncle for the apparent murder of his father - leads a stellar cast including Steven Berkoff, Frances Barber, Jonathan Hyde and Jenny Seagrove, bringing their iconic roles to life in this compelling new film adaptation.

Take flight into the thrill of the unknown with a funny, feathered family vacation like no other in this action-packed original comedy.

A family of mallards who head south for the winter from New England are guided to Jamaica by a homesick scarlet macaw given a fruity Caribbean accent by Keegan-Michael Key. Mallard father Mack (Kumail Nanjiani) is a risk-averse fellow, only persuaded to spread his wings by his more adventurous wife Pam (Elizabeth Banks) and their kids Dax (Caspar Jennings) and Gwen (Tresi Gazal). His anxiety seems justified when a villainous New York chef tries to turn them all into duck a l’orange, and then pursues them to Florida where, reminiscent of the recent ‘Chicken Run’ sequel, they find that a deluxe holiday home for ducks is pampering them only for the slaughterhouse. The excellent voice cast also includes Danny DeVito, Awkwafina and David Mitchell. It’s all extremely jaunty and colourful, with some great flights of fancy and smart one-liners to also keep the adults happy.

Hirokazu Kore-eda’s new feature sees a mother demanding answers from a teacher when her son begins acting strangely. A typically superb film from the Japanese auteur.

Young widow Saori (Sakura Ando) has begun to notice some odd behaviour in her fifth-grade son, Minato (Soia Kurokawa): impulsive haircuts, a trashed bedroom, pronounced moodiness, missing footwear. When Minato comes home with tales of being hit by his teacher, Saori visits his school to confront the principal (Yūko Tanaka), but Minato is not the only one acting oddly here. Structured after the perspective-shifting classic ‘Rashomon’, we see events from the perspective of various protagonists, all referred to in some way as the titular ‘monster’. Kore-eda has captured an indelible depiction of early adolescence, with Kurokawa and Hinata Hiiragi giving two profoundly genuine performances. (Subtitles)

With a perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes (film critics’ website), this beautiful tale of friendship and love in the hand-drawn streets of vintage New York is a wondrous dialogue-free film that will warm the hearts of adults and kids alike.

Dog lives in Manhattan where he is tired of being alone, so one day he decides to build himself a robot, a companion. Their friendship blossoms, and the unlikely pair begin to explore their surroundings until they become inseparable - to the rhythm of 1980’s New York City. But a beach trip changes everything for the happy duo. After a delightful swim on a hot summer’s day, the unsuspecting Robot rusts away, with his helpless buddy unable to move him despite his best efforts. What follows is a mournful and heartbreaking chapter, to a level scarcely achieved in live action films, with Pablo Berger ultimately creating a film that will stay with the viewer for ages.

JOHN SINGER SARGENT: FASHION & SWAGGER

EXHIBITION ON SCREEN

John Singer Sargent is known as the greatest portrait artist of his era. What made his ‘swagger’ portraits remarkable was his power over his sitters, what they wore and how they were presented to the audience.

Through interviews with curators, contemporary fashionistas and style influencers, Exhibition on Screen’s film will examine how Sargent’s unique practice has influenced modern art, culture and fashion. Filmed at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and the Tate Britain, London, the exhibition reveals Sargent’s power to express distinctive personalities, power dynamics and gender identities during this fascinating period of cultural reinvention. Alongside 50 paintings by Sargent sit stunning items of clothing and accessories worn by his subjects, drawing the audience into the artist’s studio. Sargent’s sitters were often wealthy, their clothes costly, but what happens when you turn yourself over to the hands of a great artist? The manufacture of public identity is as controversial and contested today as it was at the turn of the 20th century, but somehow Sargent’s work transcends the social noise and captures an alluring truth with each brush stroke.

Three one-act ballets celebrating Kenneth MacMillan - British ballet dancer and choreographer and ex-artistic director of the Royal Ballet.

‘Danses Concertantes’, commissioned by Ninette de Valois in 1955, was MacMillan’s first major work. An early sign of the incredible artistic output that would follow, the work’s critical success spurred MacMillan to abandon performing in favour of choreography. It is followed by ‘Different Drummer’, MacMillan’s complex and haunting balletic interpretation of ‘Woyzeck’, Georg Büchner’s play about a soldier’s descent into madness. The mixed programme concludes with ‘Requiem’, his 1976 work for Stuttgart Ballet, created in memory of its late artistic director, MacMillan’s friend and former Royal Ballet dancer and choreographer, John Cranko.

Based on the life of Rose Dugdale, a former debutante who rebelled against her wealthy upbringing, becoming a volunteer in the militant Irish republican organisation, the Provisional Irish Republican Army.

‘Baltimore’ - whose title refers to a village in County Cork, Irelandbegins in the midst of a heist, not just any heist but the largest art theft in history, pulled off by four IRA members led by a onetime debutante, Rose Dugdale (Imogen Poots). She is the focus of this concise and intimate film, and is played with a compelling mix of ferocity, focus and conscience by Poots. A percussive, churning and sometimes thunderous score heightens the feelings of determination and apprehension that course through the movie’s events, and clever cinematography uses split screens at key junctures to underscore the intense logistical considerations of Rose’s mission.

When people in Littlehampton - including conservative local Edith - begin to receive letters full of hilarious profanities, rowdy Irish migrant Rose is charged with the crime. Suspecting that something is amiss, the town’s women investigate.

Fiery Rose Gooding (Jessie Buckley) has little in common with the pious Edith Swan (Olivia Colman) aside from them being neighbours in the seaside town of Littlehampton in the 1920s. But one day, Edith starts receiving scandalous letters written with foul language as eccentric as it is obscene, and she immediately accuses Rose of being the poison pen writer behind them. As Rose stands to lose her freedom and the custody of her daughter, and outrageous letters continue to blight the town, police officer Gladys Moss (Anjana Vasan) begins to suspect something is amiss. Together with a group of resourceful women, Gladys endeavours to solve the mystery, liberate Rose, and catch the real culprit. On the margins of Tokyo, a dysfunctional band of outsiders is united by fierce loyalty and a penchant for petty theft. Five people inhabit the cramped space under Granny Hatsue’s (Kirin Kiki) roof, none of them related by blood. Yet, each trust and accept one another more than most genetic relations do. When the young ‘son’ is arrested, secrets are exposed that upend their tenuous, below-the-radar existence. Kore-eda fills the film with grace notes, humour and fine observations, cleverly circling and filling out each character. Understated yet ultimately deeply affecting, ‘Shoplifters’ adds another powerful chapter to director Kore-eda’s richly humanistic filmography.

A famous Spanish actor, Julio Arenas, disappears during the filming of a movie. Although his body is never found, the police conclude that he has suffered an accident. Many years later, the mystery is brought up once more by a TV programme offering as a scoop, images of the last scenes in which he participated, shot by his close friend, director Miguel Garay (Manolo Solo). Erice’s fourth feature arrives as something between a desert oasis and a mirage: a shimmery, nourishing culmination of ideas and ellipses in a career so elusive as to have taken on a mythic quality. Nominated for an amazing 11 Goya Awards – the Spanish film industry’s highest accolade.

DRIFT

In this powerful, engrossing and poignant emotional journey, a young refugee escapes her war-torn country to a Greek island where she meets a tour guide, and the two become close as they each find hope in the other.

Jacqueline (Cynthia Erivo), a young refugee, lands alone and penniless on a Greek island, where she tries first to survive and then to cope with her past. While gathering her strength, she begins a friendship with a rootless tour-guide (Alia Shawkat) and together they find the resilience to forge ahead. This is an astonishingly confident and deeply moving film, an unarguable career highlight for both Erivo and Shawkat and further evidence that Chen is an important filmmaker, and one to definitely keep your eye on. INTERNATIONAL PANORAMA: JAPAN EVIL DOES NOT EXIST

AKU WA SONZAI SHINAI

This is the new feature – an eco parable - from the director of ‘Drive My Car’, which won the 2021 Best Foreign Film BAFTA and Oscar. Takumi (Hitoshi Omika) and his daughter Hana (Rio Nishikawa) live in Mizubiki Village, close to Tokyo. Like generations before them, they live a modest life according to the cycles and order of nature. One day, the village inhabitants become aware of a plan to build a glamping site near Takumi’s house, offering city residents a comfortable ‘escape’ to nature. When two company representatives from Tokyo arrive in the village to hold a meeting, it becomes clear that the project will have a negative impact on the local water supply, causing unrest. The agency’s mismatched intentions endanger both the ecological balance of the nature plateau and their way of life, with an aftermath that affects Takumi’s life deeply. This ecological parable stands on the battle lines between modern civilisation and the natural world, offering a perspective that’s as quietly measured as it is entrancing. (Subtitles)

POOR THINGS

Yorgos Lanthimos has created an incredible tale of the fantastical evolution of Bella Baxter, a young woman brought back to life by the brilliant and unorthodox scientist Dr Godwin Baxter.

Under Baxter’s (Willem Dafoe) protection, Bella (Emma Stone in a career-defining performance) is eager to learn. Hungry for the worldliness she is lacking, Bella runs off with Duncan Wedderburn (Mark Ruffalo), a slick and debauched lawyer, on a whirlwind adventure across the continents. Free from the prejudices of her times, Bella grows steadfast in her purpose to stand for equality and liberation. ‘Poor Things’ is an awe-striking visual feast that satisfies the eyes, tantalises the loins, and feeds the soul. Both incredibly funny and disturbing, sometimes in the same beat, it will surely be knocking on the door of awards voters in a host of categories.

Lanthimos (‘Dogtooth’, ‘Killing of a Sacred Dear’, The Favourite’) continues to surprise and astound with every film. (Some subtitles) IRELAND/UK 2023 YORGOS LANTHIMOS 141M

A Homeric fairy tale that tells the adventurous journey of two young boys, Seydou and Moussa, who leave Dakar to reach Europe. In this acclaimed film which won top directing and acting prizes at the Venice Film Festival, writer-director Garrone presents a “reverse shot” of the immigration experience while unfurling an epic, cinematographically magnificent odyssey from West Africa to Italy. The story is told through the mind’s eye and experiences of two Senegalese teenagers living in Dakar who yearn for a brighter future in Europe. Yet between their dreams and reality lies a treacherous journey through a labyrinth of checkpoints, the scorched Sahara Desert, a fetid North African prison, and the vast waters of the Mediterranean where thousands have died packed inside vessels barely fit for passage.

MR CAPRA GOES TO HOLLYWOOD

THE RISE AND FALL OF A NEW DEAL DISCIPLE

‘It Happened One Night’, one of the greatest romantic comedies of all time, is back on the big screen this month and this talk will look back at the fascinating career of its celebrated director, ItalianAmerican Frank Capra.

Frank Capra is the director who most clearly articulated Roosevelt’s New Deal. Capra’s construct of the ‘little man’ who rejects wealth for the values of community was enormously influential, defining 1930s Hollywood cinema. The anti-Communist 1940s undermined Capra’s relevance. ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’, flopped. Capra was no longer speaking for the American people. Nick Smedley examines the rise and fall of a key American director. Full of clips, this promises to be hugely enjoyable, as well as informative.

MR. DEEDS GOES TO TOWN

To complement our talk on Frank Capra and the remastered ‘It Happened One Night’, we also present one of Capra’s best and most loved films.

Longfellow Deeds (Gary Cooper), a resident of small-town Vermont, leads a simple life until he inherits a vast fortune from a late uncle. Soon, unscrupulous lawyer John Cedar (Douglas Dumbrille) brings Deeds to New York City, where the unassuming heir is the object of much media attention. When wily reporter Babe Bennett (Jean Arthur) gains the trust and affection of Deeds, she uses her position to publish condescending articles about him - but are her feelings for him really that shallow? With snappy lines and stellar performances, this is an undisputed Capra classic.

We are delighted to present this unique opportunity to see one of the most entertaining films of all time on the big screen... and in a new 4K restoration too! Winner of the Oscars for Best Picture, Director, Actor, Actress and Screenplay.

In Frank Capra’s acclaimed romantic comedy, spoiled heiress Ellie Andrews (Claudette Colbert) impetuously marries the scheming King Westley (Jameson Thomas), leading her tycoon father (Walter Connolly) to spirit her away on his yacht. After jumping ship, Ellie falls in with cynical newspaper reporter Peter Warne (Clark Gable), who offers to help her reunite with her new husband in exchange for an exclusive story. But during their travels, the reporter finds himself falling for the feisty young heiress. Colbert and Gable make the perfect comedic duo, and together with inspired direction from Capra, make this film the perfect example of that well-known phrase “movie magic”.

USA 1934 FRANK CAPRA 105M

The commandant of Auschwitz and his wife strive to build a dream life for their family in a house and garden next to the camp. Multiple winner at Cannes 2023 plus winner of Best British Film and Best Foreign Language Film at the 2024 BAFTAs.

The film observes Rudolf Höss (Christian Friedel) and his wife Hedwig (Sandra Hüller) as they live their happy family life right next door to the concentration camp. Shot like a casual European dramedy about a family at their summer home, the reality that surrounds them is revealed only by the barbed wire fences, small details in conversation, skies filled with smoke, bursts of sound design, and the piercing score. Friedel as Höss is frightening in his mundanity and Hüller as Hedwig gives the film its twisted humanity. The moments where Hedwig is cruel to her house staff almost feel like a relief - evil we can see even if it’s so much milder than what’s over the walls.

One of the best films of the year. (Subtitles)

DAS LEHRERZIMMER

Incredibly well-reviewed film where a teacher’s student is suspected of theft, so decides to get to the bottom of the matter. Caught between her ideals and the school system, the consequences of her actions threaten to break her.

Carla Nowak (Leonie Benesch) starts her first job at a high school where she stands out among the new staff because of her idealism. When a series of thefts occur and one of her students is suspected, she decides to get to the bottom of the matter on her own. Between outraged parents, opinionated colleagues and aggressive students, she is relentlessly confronted with the structures of the school system. The more desperately she tries to do everything right, the more the young teacher threatens to break.

A smart and provocative modern parable with the heart of a thriller, ‘The Teachers’ Lounge’ brilliantly uses its setting as the backdrop for a look at how quickly even tight-knit communities can be destabilised.

BACK TO BLACK

The extraordinary story of Amy Winehouse’s early rise to fame and the making of her groundbreaking album, ‘Back to Black’. Told from Amy’s (Marisa Abela) perspective and inspired by her deeply personal lyrics, the film follows the remarkable woman behind the phenomenon and the tumultuous relationship at the centre of one of the most legendary albums of all time. Winehouse was touted as “the next best thing” with the voice of a Blues’ angel, but left us way too soon at the age of 27, leaving not only a huge hole in her family’s life, but a chasm in the world’s musical sphere. The perfectly chosen support cast includes Jack O’Connell as Amy’s husband Blake Fielder-Civil, plus Eddie Marsan and Lesley Manville as the singer’s parents, Mitch and Cynthia. Directed by Sam Taylor Johnson, who did an outstanding job on John Lenon’s story in 2009s ‘Nowhere Boy’. TWO TICKETS TO GREECE

An odd-couple comedy that sees two former school friends reunited in middle age for a sun-soaked Greek holiday. A hit in the 2023 French Film Festival UK at New Park.

Three feisty femmes – Magalie (Laure Calamy), Blandine (Olivia Côte) and Bijou (Kristin Scott Thomas) – play estranged childhood friends who tentatively reunite for a trip to the Greek Islands. Recently divorced, and watching helplessly as her only son leaves home, Blandine is struggling to find her footing again, so when her former best friend Magalie, loud and fearless, suddenly resurfaces, she allows herself to be spontaneous for a change. But as they head off towards their destination, it is soon apparent that Magalie’s very different approach to holidaying – and to life – could lead Blandine to her breaking point… and beyond. An unashamed crowd-pleaser with Kristin Scott Thomas getting in on the act and letting down her hair as a hippie jewellery maker called Bijou. The film emerges as a breezily delightful tale of female camaraderie, intermingled with laughter, tears and great scenery around Amorgos, where Luc Besson’s cult ‘The Big Blue’ was shot.

HENRY JAMES’S WOMEN ON SCREEN

Later this month Léa Seydoux stars in French sci-fi movie ‘The Beast’, the latest in an extraordinarily varied range of films based on the stories of Henry James, and this talk will look at how women have played a central role in nearly all of them.

Henry James was a writer whose work was imbued in the most subtle ways with ambiguity and contradiction. A gay man who never married, he created some of the most memorable female characters in fiction. With the release of ‘The Beast’ in May, starring Léa Seydoux, this talk by Patrick Hargood, the Cinema Education Officer, will explore the fascinating range of film versions of his work, including ‘The Innocents’ (also screening in May) and ‘The Portrait of a Lady’.

CLASSICS RESTORED & REISSUED THE INNOCENTS

Creepily atmospheric, this is a stylishly crafted, chilling British ghost tale with Deborah Kerr at her finest. Remastered in stunning 4K. Based on the Henry James story ‘The Turn of the Screw’, this a psychological thriller about Miss Giddens (the glorious Kerr) who takes a governess job in a Victorian home for two rich orphans, ten-year-old Miles (Martin Stephens) and his younger sister Flora (Pamela Franklin). She begins to see what she believes are ghosts and suspects the children’s bizarre behaviour is the result of supernatural powers. The children’s previous nanny and her manservant lover both met with mysterious deaths. This is a film that creeps slowly up on the viewer: a drip feed of fear fed by creaks, eerie children and shadowy demonic figures on the periphery of this world and the next. Psychological horrors have imitated its ambiguous ending ever since. Few have pulled it off half as creepily, and Martin Scorsese put this in his top ten list of nerve-jangling films.
