This Summer, we just can’t go past the blockbuster of the season - ‘F1’.
Brad Pitt plays a Formula One race driver who comes out of retirement to mentor and team up with a young driver. Whether you are a motor sport nut who watches every race, or someone who only sees cars going around in never-ending circles, this film is for everyone, and a guaranteed thrill ride.
As an appetiser for our ‘A Greener Screen’ season in the Autumn, we team up with the UK Green Film Festival to show two wonderful environmental documentaries in the first two weeks of this season. To complement these, we also bring back ‘Ocean with David Attenborough’ and present a film which has been much requested – ‘Wind, Tide & Oar’, which focuses on engineless sailing through rivers, coastlines and open seas.
For lovers of top-quality classic cinema, we are all lucky to be going through a period of time where there are some wonderful remasters of films such as John Schlesinger‘s ‘Darling’ which turns 60, Stanley Kubrick’s ‘Barry Lyndon’ turns 50, Akira Kurosawa’s ‘Ran’ turns 40 and Milos Forman’s ‘Amadeus’ which was first released in 1984.
In addition to these, we have also programmed ‘Pulp Fiction’ and ‘Blade Runner’ for our Film Club screenings – first Tuesday of every month, as well as a super rare big-screen presentation of Werner Herzog’s ‘Fitzcarraldo’ to complement the re-release of ‘Burden of Dreams’ which is known as one of the best documentaries about the making of a film.
Our Film Education team led by the tireless Patrick Hargood present three more illustrated talks this season. Professor Maggie Andrews looks back at ‘1945 and After’, a momentous period in cinema; Dr Tommy Lynch of the University of Chichester will explore the different ways in which the church is depicted in comedy, horror and dramas in ‘Clergy in Crisis!’, and finally, Andrew Vance will look back at the careers of ‘Astaire, Rogers & Berlin’.
See you at the cinema

This wildly entertaining adventure is said to be the final offering of this franchise, and boy, have they made it count. With his trusty team including Grace (Hayley Atwell), Luther (Ving Rhames) and Benji (Simon Pegg), Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) must now confront a sinister AI brain called “the Entity”, the ultimate baddie which is undermining truth all over the world with lies and deepfakes, setting nation against nation, nuclear power against nuclear power. We periodically get a greatest-hits flashback montage of the other seven films in the canon – and of course a brand-new scene featuring our hero Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) sprinting across the screen. Cruise running is of course just one of the treats we have become accustomed to – we of course, cannot do without Tom hanging on for dear life from one high altitude craft or another; this time, we are treated to an amazing stunt sequence featuring an old-fashioned prop plane. Thrills and spills to boot –this is the perfect Summer flick!

LE TEMPS D’AIMER
A sprawling and poetic French period drama, beginning in the aftermath of World War II and unfolding over two decades, examining a mutually advantageous marriage of convenience that, against the odds, grows into real love. In 1947 on a beach in Normandy, Madeleine (Anaïs Demoustier), a waitress in a hotel-restaurant and mother of a little boy, meets rich student François (Vincent Lacoste). He is unlike anyone she has met. He studies archaeology at the Sorbonne and, when he slips her a covert glass of champagne at the hotel where she waitresses, he toasts in ancient Greek. This is a substantial, involving drama that evocatively tallies the costs of living on the wrong side of social and sexual conventions in the 1950s and 1960s. Director Quillévéré weaves a tale of guilt and unsuccessfully repressed desires that takes in homosexuality, race and polyamory. ‘Along Came Love’ portrays a type of bond where shared secrets eventually erupt, leading to both tragedy and release. Five nuns set their sights on winning the cash prize in a major cycling race to raise money to renovate a dilapidated hospice. The only hitch is that none of them can ride a bicycle. When the local nursing home finds itself in dire straits and in danger of falling to pieces, it’s down to Mother Veronique (Valérie Bonneton) and the five eccentric sisters of the convent of St. Benedict to find a way to help. Spotting a poster for a bike race with a €25,000 cash prize (and the incentive of a trip to the Vatican for the winner!), the sisters might just have their answer. The only drawbacks are that they are terrible cyclists, and their rival convent, led by Mother Veronique’s childhood nemesis Mother Josephine (‘Borgen’s Sidse Babett Knudsen), have their own plans for the prize money – and just a little more experience. But God works in mysterious ways! Laurent Tirard’s hilariously absurd comedy had our audiences rolling in the aisles (and that’s why we have brought it back) and the stunning landscapes of France’s Jura region provide a beautiful backdrop too! A compelling exploration of engineless sailing through rivers, coastlines and open seas, shot on analogue film over three years. We delve into the experiences of those who travel solely by harnessing the natural elements, following a diverse array of traditional boats and uncovering the unique rhythms and motivations of engineless navigation. ‘Wind, Tide & Oar’ creates a contemplative space, addressing themes of ecology, heritage, traditional skills and maritime history. Using a 1960s hand-wound camera, Wahl offers a poetic and intimate perspective on a millennia-old craft. Through the film’s reveries, sailing becomes a means to explore our interaction with and responsibility to the environment. This powerful documentary takes viewers on a breathtaking journey showing there is nowhere more vital for our survival, more full of life, wonder or surprise, than the ocean. Attenborough reveals how the span of his lifetime has coincided with the great age of ocean discovery. Through spectacular sequences featuring coral reefs, kelp forests and the open ocean, Attenborough shares why a healthy ocean keeps the entire planet stable and flourishing. Stunning, immersive cinematography showcases the wonder of life under the seas and exposes the realities and challenges facing our ocean as never before seen, from destructive fishing techniques to mass coral reef bleaching. Yet this story is also one of great optimism, with Attenborough pointing to inspirational stories from around the world to deliver his greatest message: the ocean can recover to a glory beyond anything anyone has ever seen. Nazi propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels is in charge of building public support for the Holocaust and for the war that Hitler is about to start.
This biographical drama follows Joseph Goebbels in his last seven years by Adolf Hitler’s side. While Hitler is at the height of his power, Goebbels is the creator of the pictures of the flagwaving crowds and of the anti-Semitic films ‘Jud Süß’ and ‘Der Ewige Jude’, preparing the people for the mass murder of the Jews. After the defeat at Stalingrad and the situation becoming increasingly hopeless in late 1944, Goebbels plans the most radical propaganda act, his last staging of Hitler’s suicide, the murder of his family and his own suicide. The filmmaker has declared that the intent of the film is to take us behind the scenes of this murderous regime and show it as it actually was, adding, “For only if we take an up-close look at the biggest villains of history can we strip the masks from their faces and thus disarm the demagogues of the present.” (Subtitles)

This is a British classic, where a beautiful but amoral model sleeps her way to the top of the London fashion scene at the height of the Swinging Sixties.
Gorgeous but easily bored Diana Scott (Julie Christie) becomes a popular model and actress in London in the 1960s while toying with the affections of two older men, married television newsman Robert Gold (Dirk Bogarde) and public relations mastermind Miles Brand (Laurence Harvey). Although Diana is the toast of swinging London, the dark side of fame and fortune begins to take its toll, but it proves harder to escape the mod scene than she expects. Schlesinger created a film that set tongues wagging and moralists wringing their hands. Christie’s Oscar-winning, mesmerising performance is remarkable.

Steve Coogan stars in this poignant dramedy that follows an Englishman’s personal and political awakening after he adopts a penguin during a cataclysmic period in Argentine history. Argentina’s 1976 military coup d’état, along with the sustained period of violence and forced disappearances that it ushered in, isn’t an obvious historical backdrop for a heartwarming tale of human-animal bonding. But that’s how the timing worked out for Tom Michell, an English teacher stationed at an elite Buenos Aires private school, at the time of the turmoil. With the country in chaos and many of his colleagues in crisis, he was figuring out what to do with the Magellan penguin he had accidentally adopted on a weekend jaunt to Uruguay. Director Cattaneo is best known for ‘The Full Monty’ and ‘Military Wives’, and Coogan brings his signature dry irony to proceedings, but the penguin is the real star here.

Many scenes have already become cinema classics, such as the dancing scene with Travolta and Thurman at Jack Rabbit Slim’s diner, as well as the “royale with cheese” conversation in the hitmen’s car. 93-year-old Irish writer Edna O’Brien recounts her controversial life, novels, love affairs and stardom through personal journals read by actress Jessie Buckley.
In 1960, a young Irish woman named Edna O’Brien wrote a sexually frank debut novel, ‘The Country Girls’. She became a literary sensation, writing for The New Yorker, delivering provocative interviews and authoring screenplays. Her success enraged her writer husband and made her a pariah in her native Ireland, where her books were banned and burned. She would make her home in London, where she conducted numerous love affairs, hosted starstudded parties and made and lost a fortune. In July 2024, Edna passed away and this film provides a final testimony from her, aged 93, as she reflects upon her extraordinary life. Granting the director access to her personal journals, read aloud in the film by Irish actress Jessie Buckley, and with additional perspectives offered from Gabriel Byrne, Walter Mosley and an array of renowned writers, Edna does not shy away from any subject. A must-see.

With nowhere stable to live, she is told she can’t simply pick them up. It’s as though all the air has suddenly been sucked out of her world. This vital drama vividly evokes the frustration and screaming anguish of dealing with an impenetrable system which sees Molly’s efforts to be reunited with her children thwarted at every turn. Filmmaker Daisy-May Hudson documented her own experiences in the personal documentary ‘Half Way’ about homelessness in 2015. Informed by those experiences, this fiction feature is all the more powerful; the emotions are raw, but they are approached with balance and sensitivity and a strong respect for people who are trying hard, even if they don’t always succeed. To mark the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II, a talk for the Festival of Chichester, looking back at the portrayal of this momentous period in cinema
This talk by Professor Maggie Andrews explores the role films played in the transition from war to peace at the end of the Second World War. ‘The Lamp Still Burns’ (1943), ‘They Came to a City’ and ‘Victory Wedding’ (both 1944) provided glimpses of the society the Labour Government, elected on 5 July 1945, was expected to create. However subsequent films such as ‘Madonna and the Seven Moons’ (1945) and ‘The Glass Mountain’ (1949) expressed the fantasies, fears and discontents created by the legacies of war.

When Lars Hammar, after 40 years as a beloved French teacher in Köping, retires, he envisions a delightful “third age” with travel, wine and experiences together with his wife Tiina. But instead of indulging in life’s pleasures, Lars becomes increasingly passive at home in his leather armchair, to the great frustration and despair of both Tiina and their son Filip. That’s when Filip gets an idea - to take his frail old father to his beloved France and let him revisit the places he has loved most in life. By retracing the same road trip the family used to take when Filip was a child, and secretly orchestrating some of life’s most delightful moments, he hopes to reignite Lars’ zest for life. With the help of his best friend Fredrik, some hefty doses of optimism and creativity, and an old orange Renault 4, the adventure can begin! This beautiful documentary - the most-watched documentary in Swedish history - will effortlessly delight and sincerely move anyone who takes a chance on it. (Subtitles)

New York, early 1960s. Against the backdrop of a vibrant music scene and tumultuous cultural upheaval, an enigmatic 19-yearold from Minnesota arrives in the West Village with his guitar and revolutionary talent, destined to change the course of American music. As he forms his most intimate relationships during his rise to fame, he grows restless with the folk movement and, refusing to be defined, makes a controversial choice that culturally reverberates worldwide. Timothée Chalamet stars and sings as Dylan in James Mangold’s biopic, the electric true story behind the rise of one of the most iconic singer-songwriters in history.

Loved by our audiences, we bring back the charming wine-based romantic comedy about two awkward singles who form an unlikely couple and inadvertently find love.
Jacques (Bernard Campan) is divorced and runs a small wine shop on the verge of bankruptcy in a small French town. Hortense (Isabelle Carré) is also single, full of life and eager to find true love. One day she walks into his store looking for a good drop of wine to share with a group of homeless people that she regularly cooks for, and before too long she has signed up for a tasting workshop at Jacques’ store. The road to romance though, is not exactly smooth, especially when both of them are harbouring secrets – and nursing past hurts. Carré (‘L’Enfant de Personne’) and Campan (‘Tous Inconnus’) are both César award-winning actors and have convincing on-screen chemistry for an unlikely couple. Just like a good wine, ‘The Tasting’ is cheeky, full-bodied and has a lasting finish. (Subtitles)

THE CHURCH AND CINEMA
As a new Pope was elected in Rome, the film ‘Conclave’ became the most successful in the history of Chichester Cinema - a perfect time for a talk looking back at the Church in film.
‘Conclave’ was a critical and commercial success, but why would a drama about the selection of a new Pope be so popular? To answer this question, Dr Tommy Lynch of the University of Chichester will explore the different ways in which the Church is depicted in comedy, horror and dramas, examining the way that films about clergy experiencing existential crises represent a more universal search for meaning in dark times.

NATTVARDSGÄSTERNA
“God, why hast thou forsaken me?” A priest in a small, rural town in Sweden struggles with a lack of faith in God and an existential crisis.
A widowed village pastor, Tomas Ericsson (Gunnar Björnstrand), tormented by private doubt, finds dealing with his troubled parishioners and the teacher who was his lover Märta (Ingrid Thulin) an increasingly oppressive burden. This is the second film of Bergman’s ‘Faith Trilogy’, a trio of thematically connected works exploring man’s crisis of spirituality in an increasingly Godless world. In this personal treatise on the torments of faith, Bergman turns a dark, stark chamber drama into a remarkably rich meditation on the difficulty of living in uncertain times. Never a comfortable film, it’s finely acted by a familiar Bergman ensemble which includes Max von Sydow, and the awesomely cold vistas form a perfect counterpoint to the spiritual freeze.

Werner Herzog’s monumental marvel of a film is the story of an extremely determined man who intends to build an opera house in the middle of a jungle.
Opera-loving European Brian Fitzgerald (Klaus Kinski) lives in a small Peruvian city. Better known as Fitzcarraldo, this foreigner is obsessed with building an opera house in his town and decides that to make his dream a reality he needs to make a killing in the rubber business. To become a successful rubber baron, Fitzcarraldo hatches an elaborate plan that calls for a particularly impressive feat - bringing a massive boat over a mountain with the help of a band of natives. This is a truly remarkable film with a production as audacious as the feat it’s depicting, ‘Fitzcarraldo’ is nothing short of an awe-inspiring spectacle. We also screen the documentary on the troubled making of this film ‘Burden of Dreams’, which really lays bare the love-hate relationship between Herzog and Kinski. (Subtitles)

A compelling portrait of an artist obsessed, this documentary follows German auteur Werner Herzog as he deals with difficult actors, bad weather and getting a boat over a mountain, all in an effort to make a film.
German director Werner Herzog begins work on his 1982 epic ‘Fitzcarraldo’ (also screening this week) but soon runs into serious setbacks, from casting problems to his own stubborn refusal to use special effects. After having to reshoot much of the film because the lead actor was recast, his crew must then haul an old steamboat over a mountain using manpower alone. With a resolve bordering on insanity, Herzog struggles to realise his vision, vowing to see the film completed - even if it leads to his undoing. Critics consider this one of the best – if not the best – documentaries on the making of a film. (Subtitles)

DUTCH NATIONAL OPERA
‘Cavalleria Rusticana’ (Cav) and ‘Pagliacci’ (Pag) are often referred to as opera’s Siamese twins, but if you have ever encountered them together, it has always been Cav that has come first. Why? There’s no rule about it, so why should it?
Director Robert Carsen reverses the order in this production for the Dutch National Opera, but it isn’t a mere whim. It is a key part of his vision for this pairing of works because one flows from the other. Carsen’s overreaching theme is taken from Tonio’s prologue that opens ‘Pagliacci’: the boundary between fictional emotions as portrayed on stage and the real emotions of the actors/singers themselves. Who is who? Participants in the drama or audience? In an extraordinary coup de theatre at the opening of ‘Pagliacci’ the soberly-dressed patrons in the first three rows of the stalls rise to a disturbance and transform themselves into the chorus. And at the end of ‘Cavalleria Rusticana’, they disperse, revealing a huge mirror in which the audience themselves are reflected as witnesses of the tragedies. A beautifully filmed, heartfelt adaptation of Niall Williams’ bestselling novel. Two young people are made for each other, but as fate pulls them together, so too does life threaten to tear them apart. Nicholas (Fionn O’Shea) and Isabel (Ann Skelly) are made for each other, but fate does not always choose the easiest path to true love. Nicholas’ father, William (Pierce Brosnan), comes home one day to shatter his family’s modest life, when he tells them that in a moment of divine intervention, God has instructed him to dedicate his life to painting. Meanwhile Isabel and her family live a charmed existence on a small neighbouring island, their house full of music and poetry. When tragedy strikes, the music stops, and Isabel’s parents (Helena Bonham Carter, Gabriel Byrne) decide to send Isabel to a convent school on the mainland. The young lovers embark on their own individual journeys, before fate contrives to pull the threads of their lives together. The skies and seas are azure blue, the beaches are golden, and the sun never seems to dim, lending the film a beautiful fairytale quality. Filmed in Donegal and Antrim. Trying to leave their troubled lives behind, twin brothers return to their hometown to start again, only to discover that an evil is waiting to welcome them back.
The dreams of rabble-rousing (and former Chicago enforcers for Al Capone) twin brothers Smoke and Stack (Michael B. Jordan) come to fruition when they return to their small Mississippi hometown and successfully open a music bar in an abandoned sawmill. The place overflows with music and mysticism, and when their cousin Preacher Boy (Miles Caton) picks up his guitar and plays the Blues in front of a rowdy audience, all hell (including a rabble of vampires) breaks loose. Jack O’Connell’s co-stars as the despicably smirking villain in this rip-roaring fusion of masterful visual storytelling and outstanding toe-tapping blues. It looks phenomenal too: shot on 70mm film, the frame throbs with sultry reds and golds. You have seen this Summer’s Chichester Festival Theatre production, so now we give you the original screwball musical comedy, where an American dancer comes to Britain and falls for a model whom he initially annoyed.
The story centres on wealthy Dale Tremont (Ginger Rogers), on holiday in London and Venice. She assumes that American entertainer Jerry Travers (Fred Astaire) is the husband of her friend Madge (Helen Broderick) – who is actually the wife of Jerry’s business manager Horace Hardwick (Edward Everett Horton).
Glamorous and enthralling, a Depression-era diversion beautifully scored by Irving Berlin, this is the most successful and beloved picture of the prolific Rogers and Astaire partnership which saw them produce an astonishing nine musicals between 1933 and 1939. A young woman falls in love with a member of an anti-Nazi group. The two spend the summer together until they get caught by the Gestapo and she is imprisoned, eight months pregnant. Berlin, 1942. It was the most beautiful summer for Hilde Coppi (Liv Lise Fries) – madly in love with Hans (Johannes Hegeman) and joyfully pregnant. But amid the passion there is grave danger. Despite the huge risks, Hilde decides to get involved herself but is arrested by the Gestapo and gives birth to her son in prison. Now in a desperate situation, Hilde develops a quiet inspirational strength, but she only has a few months left with her son. The main protagonist is mostly soft-spoken, reticent and reserved throughout, which is very refreshing, nothing like the warrior queens and Amazonian figures popular cinema loves to laud as female role models. Hopper’s work is the most recognisable art in America – popular, praised and mysterious. Countless painters, photographers, filmmakers and musicians have been influenced by his art. But who was he, and how did a struggling illustrator create such a bounty of notable work? This film takes a deep look into Hopper’s art, his life and his relationships. From his early career as an illustrator; his wife giving up her own promising art career to be his manager; his critical and commercial acclaim; and in his own words – this film explores the enigmatic personality behind the brush. Combined with expert interviews, diaries and a startling visual reflection of American life, ‘Hopper’ brings to life America’s arguably most influential artist. They decide to walk the South West Coast Path – the longest (630 miles) uninterrupted footpath in England – from Minehead to Poole along the Devon, Cornwall and Dorset coast armed only with a tent, limited supplies, very few clothes and the travelogue that inspired this trek. Helene Louvart’s excellent cinematography is a real highlight, with filming locations including Padstow, Clovelly, Ilfracombe and some of the most beautiful rugged coast in the country, but do see if you can spot the scenes filmed at our very own West Wittering. This portrait of loss, humanity and rebirth is adapted from Raynor Winn’s personal memoir, with Anderson and Isaacs’ intimately textured performances standing out.

David Cronenberg’s latest film sees an innovative businessman and grieving widower build a device to connect with the dead inside a burial shroud.
Karsh, played by a smirking Vincent Cassel whose face and wiry grey hair make him a dead ringer for Cronenberg, has created GraveTech, a wired cemetery that allows mourners to watch their loved ones decompose in real time, either with an app on their phones or via the monitors affixed to the top of each headstone. Karsh believes his morbid invention will allow people to maintain a meaningful relationship with the bodies of their life partners, even in death. The film also stars Diane Kruger and Guy Pearce. Cronenberg drew on his own wife’s death for this brilliantly cerebral thriller about the physicality of grief.

The life, success and troubles of Mozart, as told by Antonio Salieri, the contemporaneous composer who was deeply jealous of Mozart’s talent and claimed to have murdered him.
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (Tom Hulce) is a remarkably talented young Viennese composer who unwittingly finds a fierce rival in the disciplined and determined Antonio Salieri (F. Murray Abraham).
Resenting Mozart for both his hedonistic lifestyle and his undeniable talent, the highly religious Salieri is gradually consumed by jealousy and becomes obsessed with Mozart’s downfall, leading to a devious scheme that has dire consequences for both men. This lavish, flamboyant and ambitious production bagged 8 Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Director, Writer and Actor. Indeed Murray Abraham’s performance as the envious Salieri, a man with more desire to produce music than God gave him talent to create, is one for posterity. Irresistible cinema.

Two Americans end up in Dakar, Senegal with bombs strapped to their chests and ten hours in which to find out why.
Two seemingly innocent American men (Hus Miller and Cam McHarg) wake up in the streets of Dakar, with bombs strapped to their chests. Following the orders of a mysterious voice (the unmistakable Willem Defoe) on their cell phones, they will run a desperate race against time that will set a whole country on fire and, inadvertently, plunge them into a quest for a deeper meaning to their lives. Congolese filmmaker Herbulot is a rising talent on the international action scene who blends his knowledge of his homeland with a deep appreciation of the history of action filmmaking.

Over seven hallucinatory days, a village with no name, in an undefined time and place, disappears.
In Athina Rachel Tsangari’s (‘Chevalier’, ‘Dogtooth’) tragicomic take on a Western, townsman-turned-farmer Walter Thirsk (Caleb Landry Jones)and befuddled lord of the manor Charles Kent (Harry Melling) are childhood friends about to face an invasion from the outside world: the trauma of modernity. The feral spirit of the world is gorgeously evoked throughout, with Sean Price-Williams’ cinematography a standout. Shooting on film, he embraces the organic qualities of the medium: the edge of the frame is ragged and mossy. Music is also part of the tapestry: the women sing hauntingly lovely, traditional Scottish folk songs then the fiddles whip up a frenzy of boisterous bad behaviour. There is a wildness and a pagan spirit to this film’s energy.
