And the pièce de résistance…. our annual French Film Festival programmed by Roger Gibson, which includes a wine-tasting for your delectation! In the survey many of you kindly completed earlier in the year, you mentioned how much film reviews influence your film selection decisions, so from this programme onwards, we are including the films and plays which have received top review rankings with stars. Not all of our films get reviewed of course, but rest assured that we never miss a film which has had rave reviews. We are committed to making your experience at New Park a special one and your feedback is important. Please know that my door/inbox is always open and we will soon be introducing a suggestion box in the foyer to welcome any thoughts you might have. Meanwhile, please feel free to contact me at annemarie@chichestercinema.org. Happy viewing!

BONNARD, PIERRE ET MARTHE

A stunningly beautiful, if slightly romanticised, biopic, which I originally had hoped to show in our August Festival. – Roger Gibson ‘Bonnard, Pierre et Marthe’ sidesteps most of the pitfalls found in films about artists, getting straight to the heart of the matter and focusing on the artist’s partner. The film also strikes the right distance for a close-up exploration of the work of a painter and for depicting the close circle of painters on the scene at the time (notably Claude Monet and Édouard Vuillard). The exuberant natural surrounds along the rural banks of the Seine where the couple’s little house nestles, lunches on the grass with visiting friends, and the vivacity verging on comedy, all contribute greatly to the charm of the film. Martin Provost conducts this historical reconstruction with an eye dazzled by everyday treasures. (Subtitles) FRANCE 2023 MARTIN PROVOST 122M 4 | CHICHESTERCINEMA.ORG

ANATOMY OF A FALL

ANATOMIE D’UNE CHUTE Palme d’Or Winner at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival. “A sparkling intellectual thriller that lingers for days.” - The Telegraph When a frustrated writer (Samuel Theis) dies of suspicious causes, the clues he left behind would appear to implicate his wife (Sandra Hüller who came to attention in ‘Toni Erdmann’). If the death in the French Alps was a suicide, then what follows is incredibly cruel, as his grieving wife is hauled into court and tried for his murder. Their 11-year-old son (Milo Machado Graner) who is blind, is obsessed with trying to make sense of what happened, whereas it is the death of the marriage, not the husband, that preoccupies Palme d’Or wining director Justine Triet. She posits the disturbing question: Can any couple’s relationship withstand the kind of scrutiny that this one is subjected to, as old fights and infidelities are dragged into the open? Unfolding in both French and English, Triet has intrigued Festival audiences by turning what could have been a hackneyed courtroom drama upside down with an approach that is rigorous and almost documentary-like in its forensic examination. Deservedly won the Palme D’Or at Cannes. (Subtitles) FRANCE 2022 JUSTINE TRIET 150M

DIVERTIMENTO

The amazing true story of Zahia Ziouani who dreams of becoming an orchestra conductor while Fettouma, her twin sister, a professional cellist. Classical symphonic music is everything for 17-year-old Zahia Ziouani and her twin sister, Fettouma. Nevertheless, living in underprivileged Parisian suburbs in 1995 with their Algerian background, their dreams of becoming an orchestra conductor and a cellist seem very far away. They are top of their class and try to integrate into a world that is not theirs. While giving a lecture to the class, Sergiu Celibidache, a maestro, discovers that Zahia has what it takes to become a maestro, and gives her the opportunity to learn in his private class, where she also takes her sister to play in the orchestra. Driven by determination, passion and courage, they create their own orchestra, Divertimento. The idea of the orchestra is to bring together people, and use music as a way to elevate everyone, from the inhabitants of Seine Saint Denis, to the kids having a shared purpose. ‘Divertimento’ is inspired by the life of Zahia Ziouani, one of the few worldwide renowned female conductors. DALILAND

The life of young New York gallery assistant James Linton (Christopher Briney) changes forever on the day he slips down the rabbit hole into Daliland, the realm presided over by Salvador Dali and his wife, Gala. Mary Harron’s sharp-witted comedy of bad manners stars Sir Ben Kingsley as the titular Salvador Dalí, one of the most worldrenowned artists of the 20th century, and focuses on the later years of the strange and fascinating marriage between him and his wife (Barbara Sukowa), as their seemingly unshakable bond begins to stress and fracture. Theirs is a grand folie à deux – a co-dependent match between two people of unquenchable ego and indomitable will. Gala is obsessed by money while Dali is obsessed by her, intent on ensuring that he never loses her. Set in New York and Spain in 1974, the film is told through the eyes of James, a young assistant keen to make his name in the art world, who helps the eccentric and mercurial Dalí prepare for a big gallery show. “A glorious carnival.” The New Yorker USA/FRANCE 2022 MARY HARRON 97M

FANNY: THE OTHER MENDELSSOHN

Take a celebrated musical genius, some sibling rivalry, an unknown manuscript, a dash of sass and one sensational revelation and what have you got? A revelatory new feature documentary starring global pianist, Isata Kanneh-Mason. Anyone who has been to a wedding has enjoyed the soaring musical genius of Felix Mendelssohn - his ‘Wedding March’ may be the best-known classical composition of all time. But Felix was not the only genius in the family. His sister Fanny was also a brilliant composer, yet most people have never heard of her. Fanny was equal to any of her contemporaries, male or female; technically brilliant and boldly ground-breaking. Yet not until she was 40 did she dare to defy Felix’s disapproval and publish her music under her own name. Tragically, the resulting joy and recognition were shortlived. Less than a year later, Fanny died, and shortly afterwards Felix too – his already poor health exacerbated by grief. Directed by the composer’s great-great-great-granddaughter, BAFTA-winning filmmaker Sheila Hayman. UK 2023 SHEILA HAYMAN 135M 8 | CHICHESTERCINEMA.ORG

KILLERS OF THE FLOWER MOON

FOCUS ON DOCUMENTARY

Based on David Grann’s best-selling novel, Martin Scorsese’s new film is set in 1920s Oklahoma and depicts a moment in time in American history known as the Reign of Terror. Oil discovered in the Osage region of the Wild West makes them the richest social group per-capita in the world, inevitably attracting all sorts of miscreants. William ‘King’ Hale (Robert De Niro), local bigwig and duplicitously vocal ‘friend’ to the Osage, and his feckless nephew Ernest Burkhart (Leonardo DiCaprio) manipulate a situation that sees Ernest enter into a marriage to Osage woman Molly Kyle (an outstanding Lily Gladstone). After a series of suspicious deaths, FBI Agent Tom White (Jesse Plemons) and his undercover team arrive to bring some justice to proceedings. In its gripping, breathless final third – including a witty, touching epilogue – ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’ becomes more than a revisionist western, more than a poisonous love story and more even than a classic gangster movie. It becomes a Martin Scorsese film, and there can be no higher praise. USA 2023 MARTIN SCORSESE 206M NB. We will be including a short comfort break with each screening.

THE PIGEON TUNNEL

Set against the turbulent backdrop of the Cold War leading into present day, this film spans six decades as John le Carré delivers his final and most candid interview. Former British spy David Cornwell was better known as John le Carré, author of such classic espionage novels as ‘Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy’ and ‘The Constant Gardener’. This is a deeply human and engaging exploration of his extraordinary journey and the paper-thin membrane between fact and fiction. You will be enthralled by every minute of this riveting documentary which features clips from TV and movie adaptations of his work, archive interviews and dramatised vignettes commissioned especially for this film. The amazing story of Samuel Beckett’s life: Parisian bon vivant, World War II Resistance fighter, Nobel Prize-winning playwright, philandering husband and recluse. Gabriel Byrne (‘The Usual Suspects’, ‘Miller’s Crossing’) plays the inimitable Irishman with Aidan Gillen (‘Game of Thrones’) playing James Joyce. DRIVING MADELEINE

UNE BELLE COURSE When a taxi driver takes a booking to drive a passenger across Paris, he discovers his passenger is 92 years old and travelling to a retirement home where she will spend the rest of her days. Charles (Dany Boon), impatient with his passenger Madeleine’s (Line Renaud) requests to drive through parts of the city significant in her life, is at first distracted and preoccupied with his own problems, but as her story unfolds he discovers her life has been anything but ordinary. Madeleine had lived through one of the darkest wartime periods of human history and survived violent abuse at the hands of her husband Ray Haguenot (Jérémie Laheurte). Yet she is neither bitter nor gloomy, having chosen instead to overcome life’s often unjust vicissitudes, to fight against them, and to embrace joy wherever she may find it. THE ANIMAL KINGDOM

Creature effects complement the more relatable drama of how a father and son adapt to a world of animal-human hybrids in Thomas Cailley’s high-concept French thriller. A mysterious malady is sweeping France, unlocking something at a genetic level that causes people to transform into hybrid creatures. The mutations are slow and somewhat unpredictable: one person might sprout feathers which develop into wings, while another may grow scales. Through it all, 16-year-old Émile (Paul Kircher) and his father François (Romain Duris) are just trying to stay calm, which isn’t easy when the entire country is jittery and suspicious. What is causing the mutations? Is it contagious? Can the creatures be trusted? A scar on Émile’s cheek, acquired during the early days of his mother’s infection, offers a hint of the risk. This is a fantastic, magical movie, and it takes that familiar but exciting premise and explores it in a very nuanced way. The expected is in there, but only on the outskirts, surrounding the core story of how a single family is dealing with this epic global change. The result is an incredibly emotional, uplifting and well-made movie that will stay with you long after you’ve left the theatre. (Subtitles) FRANCE 2023 THOMAS CAILLEY 130M 12 | CHICHESTERCINEMA.ORG

20,000 ESPECIES DE ABEJAS A child’s gender identity crisis is mirrored by her mother’s crisis of identity as an artist in this warm, generously performed film. An eight-year-old child struggles with the fact that people keep addressing her in confusing ways. During a summer in the Basque Country among the beehives, she explores her identity alongside the women of her family, who at the same time reflect on their own lives and desires. Lucía (Sofía Otero) only really feels calm and happy in the company of her grandmother Lourdes (Ane Gaberain) and her bees, of which there are, significantly, many different sorts. But there are troubles ahead when a family christening looms at which Lucía and the other children are expected to wear special formal clothes and Lucía will want to wear a dress. THE KILLER

PERFORMANCE

David Fincher’s (‘Seven’, ‘Fight Club’ and ‘The Social Network’) latest film which premiered at Venice 2023 sees an assassin battle his employers and himself on an international manhunt. Michael Fassbender is perfectly cast in the lead role – cold, calculated and seemingly unruffled even when the odds are stacked against him. We are introduced to our protagonist by his own voiceover praising himself and his unique work skills, so it is a surprise to see one of his ‘hits’ not go quite to plan. The result is an engaging and very enjoyable film that is part revenge thriller and part black comedy. Look out for the assassin’s choice of attire – not a Prada suit as we have grown accustomed to, but a Glastonbury style bucket hat, described as German tourist “camo”, because “no one wants to approach German tourists”. Another unexpected highlight is The Smiths’ soundtrack that backs the film, and there is also a delightful turn from Tilda Swinton as one of the people on the killer’s hit-list. “Unnerves and entertains.” Sight & Sound USA 2023 DAVID FINCHER 118M

Sylvain (Pierre-Yves Cardinal) is a local craftsman, renovating Sophia and Xavier’s new country house on the side of a lake. When Sophia and Sylvain meet, Sophia’s world is turned upside down. Opposites attract, but can they last? Chokri takes an acerbic and original look at the difficulties of monogamy through her protagonists, enhanced by superbly naturalistic performances. The Quebecois actressturned-filmmaker appears on confident, philosophical and mature form in this her third feature. (Subtitles) CANADA/FRANCE 2023 MONIA CHOKRI 111M 16 | CHICHESTERCINEMA.ORG

ON THE ADAMANT

SUR L’ADAMANT Golden Bear Winner at the 2023 Berlin Film Festival. A compassionate, intelligent and shrewdly observed documentary. Nicolas Philibert who memorably made ‘Être et Avoir’ (about a rural school), returns with a warm and sympathetic documentary, which proved a worthy winner of the Berlin Film Festival’s Golden Bear earlier this year. The Adamant, a unique daycare centre in the form of a floating structure located on the Seine in the heart of Paris, welcomes adults suffering from mental disorders, offering the kind of daycare that grounds them in time and space and helps them to recover or keep up their spirits. One young man describes how other people’s noise upsets him. Frédéric, an aging but still dashing bohemian, speaks lucidly about art, before sharing that he and his brother are reincarnations of Vincent van Gogh and his brother Théo. Philibert does not offer diagnoses or assign labels. Why would he, when the patients have their own, much more earthy descriptions of their afflictions? “The best documentary that I saw in Berlin.“ – Roger Gibson (Subtitles) FRANCE/JAPAN 2023 NICOLAS PHILIBERT 109M

NOBODY HAS TO KNOW

This romantic drama which premiered at the 2022 Chichester Film Festival is set and shot on the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides, Scotland, where the wild, beautiful terrain and harsh weather are important characters. The islanders are devout Presbyterians that keep their emotions in check. When Phil (Bouli Lanners) has a stroke, he is left okay physically but can’t remember anything. He is a middle-aged Belgian who works as a farmhand for a local landowner. He gets on well with the farmer’s son, but the old man has little time for foreigners, so when Phil returns from hospital, the farmer’s matureaged daughter, Millie (Michelle Fairley), takes it upon herself to reacquaint Phil with his work, his home and his surroundings. When Millie reveals to him that they were secretly in a relationship, he has no reason to doubt her. Lanners and Fairley are beautifully cast to play the autumnal lovers. It is a highly original idea, one that will keep you guessing until the film’s moving climax. Make sure you have a tissue in your pocket! THE BIG RISK

CLASSE TOUS RISQUES The first of two cracking classic 1960s French crime thrillers. As the police close in, a wanted Frenchman assesses his relationship with his estranged family and his former friends. Abel (Lino Ventura) is a Parisian gangster sentenced to death while on the run in Italy. When things go horribly wrong, he discovers his old buddies are unwilling to help. Insultingly, they entrust a rescue mission to a stranger (the breathtakingly stylish Jean-Paul Belmondo). LE CLAN DES SICILIENS This was a big budget affair featuring three of the biggest stars of French Cinema at the time - Jean Gabin, Alain Delon and Lino Ventura. A terrifically engaging, slickly made heist film. Cynical jewel thief Roger Sartet (Alain Delon) is on the run from Chief Inspector Le Goff (Lino Ventura). Sartet conspires with mafia don Vittorio Manalese (Jean Gabin) to hijack an airliner whose cargo includes diamonds. The three stars together with Ennio Morricone’s score are all memorable. THE GOLDEN AGE OF FRENCH CRIME MOVIES As part of French Film Festival 2023 this talk will look back at the heyday of French crime movies, with Delon, Gabin, Belmondo, Moreau et al, on the make and on the run. French crime films conjure up Belmondo and Delon, Jean Gabin and Jeanne Moreau, plus directors such as Louis Malle, François Truffaut and Jean-Pierre Melville. With two French crime films in this year’s Festival – The Big Risk’ and ‘The Sicilian Clan’ – bookending the 1960s it is clear what a fertile period this was. In a talk, French film fans Patrick Hargood and Sandy Guthrie will be investigating. 100M INC 10M Q&A 18 | CHICHESTERCINEMA.ORG

MATCHMAKING

BACHURIM TOVIM We present two films from the 2023 Jewish Film Festival on Tour, starting with this sharp, hilarious critique of the business of love and marriage in the Orthodox community. On the face of it, young yeshiva bocher Moti and his little sister’s best friend Nehami are the perfect match - they share the same values, have known each other for years, and most importantly they are in love. There is just one little problem: Moti (Amit Rahav) is Ashkenazi and Nehami (Liana Ayoun), Sephardi, and in the strictly Orthodox city in which they live, such a shidduch (Jewish arranged marriage) is strictly prohibited. Going against the wishes of his meddling parents and a nosy matchmaker, Moti comes up with a genius if risky plan to marry Nehami. Inspired by classic 1960s and 70s Bourekas comedies, Erez Tadmor’s new film is an entertaining and good-hearted romantic comedy that gives a light Orthodox twist to ‘Romeo and Juliet’. THE DEVIL’S CONFESSION: THE LOST EICHMANN TAPES

Our second Jewish Film Festival offering digs into the long-lost recordings which show Adolf Eichmann’s active involvement in the planning and implementation of the Holocaust’s Final Solution. At his trial in 1961, Adolf Eichmann tried to cut a petty-minded, bureaucratic figure. His intention was to come across as an uncharismatic clerk who merely followed orders, and to downplay his role in managing the mass deportation of Jews. But only four years earlier, feeling increasingly secure in his adoptive country of Argentina, Eichmann spoke freely and boastfully – in a series of taped conversations with Dutch Nazi journalist Willem Sassen – of the idealistic fervour that made him excel at his job, and his deep regret about not sending many more millions of Jews to their deaths. The transcripts of the recordings played a crucial part in Eichmann’s trial but the whereabouts of the tapes remained unknown for years. This fascinating documentary unearths the recordings and sheds light on the realpolitik considerations that may have contributed to their disappearance. NYAD

A remarkable true story of tenacity, friendship and the triumph of the human spirit, recounting a riveting chapter in the life of worldclass athlete Diana Nyad. Directed by the team behind ‘Free Solo’. Three decades after giving up marathon swimming in exchange for a prominent career as a sports journalist, at the age of 60, Diana (Annette Bening) becomes obsessed with completing an epic swim that always eluded her: the 110-mile trek from Cuba to Florida, often referred to as the “Mount Everest” of swims. Determined to become the first person to finish the swim without a shark cage, Diana goes on a thrilling, four-year journey with her best friend and coach Bonnie Stoll (Jodie Foster) and a dedicated sailing team. We are invested in wanting to see Diana succeed, but the pleasure of the experience comes from watching actors become these characters. Look out for award nominations not only for Bening (performance of a lifetime) and Foster, but Rhys Ifans as the navigator is very deserving as well. THE ORIGIN OF EVIL

L’ORIGINE DU MAL The film’s wicked ways hit home with all the more jouissance for being deceptively anchored in the real. With more than a nod in the direction of such masters as Patricia Highsmith and Claude Chabrol, we start in a luxurious seaside villa where a young woman, Stéphane (Laure Calamy), finds herself in the company of her strange family: an unknown wealthy father, Serge (Jacques Weber), his extravagant wife, Louise (Dominique Blanc), his scheming daughter George (Doria Tillier), his rebellious granddaughter Jeanne (Céleste Brunnquel) and their creepy housekeeper Agnès (Véronique Ruggia Saura). Laure Calamy stars as the calculating Stéphane, a worker at a fish factory who shows up on the doorstep claiming to be the long-lost daughter of the patriarch. Cue twists and turns in abundance. MAY DECEMBER

FOCUS ON DOCUMENTARY

Todd Haynes’ (‘Carol’) new feature is both wickedly funny and piercingly sad. It is loosely based on the 1990s tabloid scandal of Mary Kay Letourneau, who at the age of 35 served a prison sentence for her relationship with an underage boy. Twenty years after their notorious tabloid romance gripped the nation, Gracie Atherton-Yu (Julianne Moore) and her much younger husband Joe (Charles Melton) welcome Hollywood actress Elizabeth Berry (Natalie Portman), who comes to spend time with the family to better understand Gracie, who she will be playing in a film. Joe finally begins to process what happened in his youth, and as Elizabeth and Gracie study each other, the similarities and differences between the two women begin to ebb and flow. Set in picturesque and comfortable Camden, Maine, ‘May December’ is an exploration of truth, storytelling, and the difficulties (or impossibility) of fully understanding another person. THE MISSION

In 2018, a shocking event made headlines around the world: a young American missionary, John Chau, was killed by arrows while attempting to contact one of the world’s most isolated Indigenous peoples on remote North Sentinel Island. ‘The Mission’ uncovers the gripping story beyond the headlines. Through exclusive interviews and with unprecedented access to Chau’s secret plans, personal diaries and video archives, the film examines the mythology of exploration that inspired him, the evangelical community that supported his quest, and reveals his own father’s heartbreak as Chau’s youthful thirst for adventure became a fatal obsession. This is a thoughtful, fairminded exploration of what motivated Chau, and also spreads out to confront bigger questions on the legacy of colonialism, the delusions of white saviour narratives, and the thin line between faith and fantasy. FILM TALK

Anna and Ryan have found true love - it’s been proven by a controversial new technology. There’s just one problem: Anna still isn’t sure. Then she meets Amir. In a retro-future present, couples take a test to see whether they’re truly meant for each other. Unfortunately, that test involves removing a fingernail from each party for data analysis. Anna (Jessie Buckley) starts doubting her relationship with sweet, dull Ryan (Jeremy Allen White, ‘The Bear’) when she gets a new job working alongside Amir (Riz Ahmed) at a company offering exercises designed to help lovers improve their chances of a match. The second film from director/cowriter Christos Nikou is lo-fi sci-fi with a big, lovelorn heart. Buckley and Ahmed are touching as two people not sure whether they are soul mates, let alone what to do about it. It feels a little like Yorgos Lanthimos’ ‘The Lobster’ - without the craziness. THE NATIVE AMERICAN/FIRST NATION EXPERIENCE ON FILM Millions of feet of celluloid have been used to document hordes of faceless ‘Redskins’ being gunned down, but other films have described the lives and customs of Native American and First Nation people. Since the dawn of cinema, their often tragic trail from masters of their own vast lands to the current problems resulting from living on reservations has been handled with dignity by some filmmakers and less sensitively by others. As Martin Scorsese’s new film ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’ describes the struggles of the Osage people in the 1920s, this talk, by Sandy Guthrie of the Cinema Education Team, provides an opportunity to examine the cinematic treatment of the indigenous population of the USA and Canada, in fictional films, historical reconstruction and documentary. There is so much more to their history and way of life than many westerns might suggest. 100M INC Q&A 22

THE TASTING

LA DÉGUSTATION A very enjoyable wine-based romantic comedy about two awkward singles who form an unlikely couple and inadvertently find love. Jacques (Bernard Campan) is divorced and runs a small wine shop on the verge of bankruptcy in a small French town. Hortense (Isabelle Carré) is also single, full of life and eager to find true love. One day she walks into his store looking for a good drop of wine to share with a group of homeless people that she regularly cooks for, and before too long she has signed up for a tasting workshop at Jacques’ store. The road to romance though is not exactly smooth, especially when both of them are harbouring secrets – and nursing past hurts. Carré (‘L’Enfant de Personne’) and Campan (‘Tous Inconnus’) are both César award-winning actors and have convincing on-screen chemistry for an unlikely couple. Just like a good wine, ‘The Tasting’ has a lasting finish. MADAMA BUTTERFLY ON THE LAKE

LAKE CONSTANCE, AUSTRIA As one of the most played operas today, Giacomo Puccini’s opera ‘Madama Butterfly’ returns to the Seebühne for another summer. The Japanese geisha Cio-Cio-San, called Butterfly, revels in happiness when the US-American lieutenant Pinkerton marries her. Their love culminates in an enchanting duet, but soon after, a ship takes the soldier back home. It is a clash of worlds and values: While Pinkerton feels free and marries a US-American woman back home, Butterfly, full of love, hope and longing, waits for his return for three long years – together with their child. Singing her famous aria ‘Un Bel dì Vedremo’, she imagines the day she and her beloved husband will be reunited. Then, however, Pinkerton returns with his US-American wife and Cio-Cio-San makes an irrevocable decision. With a fine Japanese-looking piece of paper, stage designer Michael Levine created a magical platform on Lake Constance for Cio-Cio-San’s touching story. Andreas Homoki, artistic director at the Zurich Opera House, uses atmospheric video projections and Antony McDonald’s colourful costumes to stage this heartbreaking opera in the beautiful lakeside scenery. A psychological thriller of the highest order with beautiful imagery, top rate lead performances and an underlying Gothic tone. Struggling to find his place at Oxford University, student Oliver Quick (Barry Keoghan, ‘The Banshees of Inisherin’) finds himself drawn into the world of the charming and aristocratic Felix Catton (Jacob Elordi - will play Elvis in the upcoming ‘Priscilla’). Felix invites him to Saltburn, his eccentric family’s (including a razor-sharp Rosamund Pike as the family matriarch) sprawling estate, for a summer that sets in motion a series of tragic events. The lushness of the imagery is exquisite, turning the visual language of a psychosexual thriller into the evocative work of an old master. Keoghan - as has become custom - turns in a towering performance, sinister and irresistible in equal measure. But as they head off towards their destination, it is soon apparent that Magalie’s very different approach to holidaying – and to life – could lead Blandine to her breaking point… and beyond. FLORENCIA EN EL AMAZONAS

MET OPERA The Met premiere stars soprano Ailyn Pérez as Florencia in a new production by Mary Zimmerman that brings the mystical realm of the Amazon to the Met stage. Sung in Spanish and inspired by the magical realism of Gabriel García Márquez, Mexican composer Daniel Catán’s 1996 opera focuses on an opera diva, Florencia Grimaldi, who returns to her native Brazil to perform and to search for her lost lover, who has vanished into the jungle. The distinguished ensemble of artists portraying the diva’s fellow travellers on the river boat to Manaus features Gabriella Reyes as the journalist Rosalba, bass-baritone Greer Grimsley as the ship’s captain, baritone Mattia Olivieri as his enigmatic first mate, tenor Mario Chang as the captain’s nephew Arcadio, and mezzo-soprano Nancy Fabiola Herrera and baritone Michael Chioldi as the feuding couple Paula and Álvaro, with Yannick Nézet-Séguin on the podium. 155M APPROX INC INTERVAL

PROMISES

FILM TALK

LES PROMESSES Isabelle Huppert and Reda Kateb launch themselves into the world of politics, at the crossroads between individual and collective interests, power games and social issues. Huppert plays Clemence, the two-time mayor of a Paris suburb, whose big housing restoration project may go down in flames before she steps down and lets a loyal protégé run for her office. She schemes with brilliant aide Yazid (Reda Kateb), wheedles with discontented tenants and investigates who is behind the refugee squats that are infesting the buildings. Eventually she decides she is going to run for that third term after all, which sets the hair of her party leader, her now former protégé, and Yazid on fire. Expertly conceived and executed, and rather pertinent to French concerns especially in the light of Macron’s new plans for Marseilles. The script is very clever and perfectly paced, and the performances, particularly from Isabelle Huppert and Reda Kateb, are delightful and truly engaging. Huppert does well to reveal the edges of the character of Clémence while keeping a slight aloofness, giving her moral compass a hint of mystery as the plot develops. JULIETTE BINOCHE

FROM AUTEUR CINEMA TO STARDOM In anticipation of the closing film in this year’s French Film Festival, ‘The Taste of Things,’ this talk, illustrated by a range of clips, will explore the fascinating film career of international star Juliette Binoche. In a film career that now spans forty years and seventy films. Juliette Binoche’s exceptional talent and amplitude as a performer have made her one of the most recognisable faces of French cinema and an international star. If Binoche reached international recognition with English-speaking films like ‘The Unbearable Lightness of Being’ (1988) or ‘The English Patient’ (1996), she first appeared in French and European auteur cinema of the 1980s-90s, including the iconic ‘Les Amants du Pont-Neuf’ (1991) and ‘Trois Couleurs: Bleu’ (1993). This talk, by film curator and French film expert, Martine Pierquin, will discuss how Binoche’s sensitive performances and lifelong preference for auteur cinema over Hollywood temptations have made her a much sought-after and critically acclaimed actor with an impressive record of film awards and nominations. 100M (INC 10M Q&A) 32 | CHICHESTERCINEMA.ORG

THE TASTE OF THINGS

LA PASSION DE DODIN BOUFFANT This mouthwatering and sensual exercise in haute cuisine and late-flowering romance is set in 1885 and almost totally within the confines of a rustic kitchen in a chateau. This is our closing film of this year’s French Film Festival. Tran Anh Hùng, the Vietnamese director, now living in France, of ‘The Scent of the Green Papaya’ based the film on the book ‘The Life and Passion of Dodin-Bouffant, Gourmet’ by Marcel Rouff. Peerless cook Eugénie (Juliette Binoche) has worked for the famous gourmet Dodin (Benoît Magimel) for the last 20 years. As time went by, the practice of gastronomy and mutual admiration turned into a romantic relationship. He realises, however, that while he schmoozes the rich and famous in the dining room, she remains in the kitchen but is clearly hugely responsible for his august reputation. There is talk of marriage, but Eugénie values her independence too much in a relationship that she considers should be of equal parts. Both Binoche and Magimel, who were together in life for a considerable time, exude an effortless rapport. Chosen as France’s Oscar contender. Warning: Another film like the recent ‘Delicieux’ that should not be seen on an empty stomach! (Subtitles) FRANCE/BELGIUM 2023 TRAN ANH HÙNG 134M

MAESTRO

FOCUS ON DOCUMENTARY

This love story chronicles the lifelong relationship of conductorcomposer Leonard Bernstein and Felicia Montealegre Cohn Bernstein. A symphonic love story with sparkling, awards-worthy performances. Bradley Cooper takes on the triple role of lead actor, director and writer. He wisely eschews the conventional biopic logic of ticking off Bernstein’s career highlights. Instead, ‘Maestro’ zeroes in on his vivid, lifelong love affair with Chilean émigré Felicia Montealegre, beautifully played by Carey Mulligan who is the beating heart of the film. ‘Maestro’ digs deep into Bernstein’s music to unleash some of the greatest hits (‘West Side Story’, ‘On the Waterfront’) and a few lesser-known pieces. A recreation of his legendary performance of Mahler in 1968 just about blows the roof off New York’s St Patrick’s Cathedral. This is a film for cinephiles as well as musos and romantics, with its discrete ‘movements’ mirroring the moviemaking style of its time frame. Early scenes are filmed in 35mm black-and-white, while Lenny and Felicia’s stormy late 1960s patch is captured in Technicolor. This elegant, ambitious biopic is a love letter to life and art, and at its core is an emotionally epic portrayal of family and love. “An absolute marvel.” Rolling Stone USA 2023 BRADLEY COOPER 129M

TISH

A riveting tribute to Tyneside photographer Tish Murtha, who lived a life as tough as those she shot in different eras of deprivation and marginalisation. Tish chronicled working-class lives in the north east in the 1970s and 1980s (and also those of Soho sex workers in London), earning for herself the nickname “Demon Snapper” in the papers. In capturing the reality of poverty and deprivation in communities where the misery of unemployment had been allowed to settle by Westminster, Murtha showed her subjects’ humour, optimism and refusal to be cowed – particularly in the faces of children. The film is presented with enormous humanity and warmth by Murtha’s grownup daughter Ella, who is an eerie likeness of her late mother. The centrally important point is that Murtha was not an outsider: she was a part of the people whose lives she recorded. UK 2023 PAUL SNG 90M BOX OFFICE 01243 786 650 | 35

THE ETERNAL DAUGHTER

Joanna Hogg’s (‘The Souvenir’) latest film sees an artist and her elderly mother confront long-buried secrets when they return to a former family home, now a hotel haunted by its mysterious past. Julie and Rosalind have come to this secluded Welsh locale so the former can work on her new screenplay, incorporating remembrances of the latter’s childhood. Before Moel Famau was a hotel, for a few years it was also Rosalind’s home when she was a little girl. Memories hide around every corner and lurk in all the shadows. Tilda Swinton portrays both Julie and Rosalind, and in a career overflowing with magnificent performances, this may be one of her best. She dives in confidently, creating two distinct characters with their own personalities, histories and ghosts who all stalk them down the lonely hallways of Moel Famau. As much as mother and daughter have in common, the emotional baggage they carry remains their own, and Swinton brings all this into the piercing, unflinching light with perceptive gracefulness. Acclaimed filmmaker Hogg’s beguiling latest film is a brilliant and captivating exploration of parental relationships and the things we leave behind. This will undoubtedly capture the eye of every BAFTA award voter. “A blackly funny exploration of identity.” Sight & Sound UK 2023 JOANNA HOGG 96M

DREAM SCENARIO

A hapless family man finds his life turned upside down when millions of strangers suddenly start seeing him in their dreams. When his nighttime appearances take a nightmarish turn, Paul is forced to navigate his newfound stardom. Paul Matthews (Nicolas Cage) is an evolutionary biology professor at a small college, in a small town. In a weird dream scenario, Paul starts to appear in people’s dreams. This gets people to notice the nondescript character like they never did before. He reaches celebrity status when he’s interviewed about this strange occurrence on TV in New York, and becomes comfortable accepting these life changes. This dark satire shows what can happen to someone in today’s cancel culture world when they have a fall-out on social media and their 15 minutes of fame turn rotten. Cage has appeared in over 100 films. In this one, he gives a pleasing uncharacteristic low-key performance instead of his usual over-thetop one. A darkly funny, and often truthful, look at the rapid hysteria of our real-world cancel culture, Norwegian filmmaker Kristoffer Borgli’s (‘Sick of Myself’) first English language film helps cement him as a provocative and wildly entertaining voice for our times. NT ENCORE After an aerial dog fight, Pilot Officer Jack Absolute flies home to win the heart of his old flame, Lydia Languish. Back on British soil, Jack’s advances soon turn to anarchy when the young heiress demands to be loved on her own, very particular, terms. Inspired by Richard Sheridan’s 1775 play ‘The Rivals’, Richard Bean (‘One Man, Two Guvnors’) and co-writer Oliver Chris set the cross-class romantic entanglements in a country house in 1941. This adds a note of imminent peril echoing movies such as ‘The Battle of Britain’ and ‘The Dawn Patrol’. But the accent is on humour and there are more puns than Huns in this exuberant adaptation. Aki Kaurismäki’s deadpan comedy has received a perfect 100% on Rotten Tomatoes film critics’ website! From the makers of ‘Loving Vincent.’ Crops, relationships and dowries preoccupy the wagging tongues of the villagers of Lipke. More epic in scope than the directors’ 2017 award-winning ‘Loving Vincent,’ this is a naturalistic portrait of 19th-century Poland and a spellbinding tableau of tragic love and one woman’s yearning for independence.
