o your summer plans include hosting friends and family, perhaps for a celebratory meal or extended visit? Your kitchen will most definitely get a workout. Not so long ago, it was virtually unheard of for a kitchen to deliver everyday function while also providing an attractive backdrop for a tasteful soiree.

Once considered a space solely for preparing food, kitchens were traditionally relegated to a tucked-away corner or even an outbuilding.

That’s not the case today, where a luxurious stone-topped island doubles as a workspace and visual statement. But how to incorporate the multiple requirements of a modern kitchen into the cohesive visual language of a well-appointed home? Greenwich-based kitchen designer Sarah Blank’s solutions lie in the principles of classicism. As she writes in her new book, Classic Kitchens for Modern Living, “the importance of this complex room demands and deserves solid knowledge of the past so that it can connect to the rest of the house and its future purpose.”

In this issue, we dissect the details of kitchen renovations and new builds alike. We also give credence to the evolving needs of today’s homeowners. Take for example designer Nancy Galasso’s clients, who required three kitchen designs in fifteen years as their family grew. For the most recent iteration, Galasso collaborated with kitchen designer Christopher Peacock, which we share on page 37. Peacock describes the new space as “not only a place to prepare food, but very much a living room.” Personally, I consider this double-duty distinction the ultimate goal for a room where we begin and end our day. hey say the third time’s the charm. The kitchen in this Westport home—all clean lines, fine finishes, and functionality— suggests there may be something to that.

It’s a carefully composed, “quintessential Christopher Peacock kitchen.” This according to Christopher Peacock (of eponymous and iconic kitchen fame) himself. “I love the scale, the fresh colors, and the comfortable vibe,” he says.

Inspired by the homeowner’s Peacock-designed kitchen in her vacation house at the Jersey Shore, the space is “open, light, and beautiful. Beachy, but not too,” says Fairfield designer Nancy Galasso, who points out this is the home’s third kitchen in fifteen years.

Having guided the evolution of the Westport house since her client bought it in 2007, it was Galasso who made the introduction to Peacock. “The kitchen is exactly as she envisioned it and very much in keeping with the rest of the house,” says the designer. “This is a house that has grown with the family— and the work is ongoing.”

The client’s passion for traditional, but not stuffy, style and “very specific shades of blue” informs the interiors.

“She wanted Westport to look and feel like her vacation home but be less

casual,” says Galasso, who did the beach house, too. To that end, the palette is calming and the overall feel uplifting.

marble (on the countertops and walls), a combination of fitted cabinetry with signature latches and open shelving, and a stunning custom metal range hood.

Peacock describes it as “not only a place to prepare food, but very much a living room…a place to entertain guests.

A place that cheers you up on a dreary morning.” It was his idea to bring in more light by opening up both sides of the range wall between the kitchen and the dining room.

“My client leans toward a rustic look,

but it has to be refined, clean, and fresh,” says Galasso. At once polished and relaxed, the living room, family room, and dining room were all part of the shore-inspired revival. The walls were custom plastered throughout, so nuanced shades of blue would feel cohesive. The classic furnishings never feel off-limits to family and friends.

“I love that my client is always happy,” says the designer, “and that she wants everyone to be happy in her home.”

The stove has its own dramatic moment thanks to a mirrored tile backsplash and a range hood interior designer Kellie Burke describes as “sexy” with its bold shape and brass strapping.

GOING GLAM Another family might have found the Tuscan-style kitchen just perfect for them.

For the new owners of this Canton home, however, the dark wood and heavy moldings weren’t quite right. “It was in great shape,” says designer Kellie Burke, “but it just wasn’t their vibe. They’re a young, groovy, hip couple with two beautiful daughters.”

Burke lightened things up with simple Shaker-style cabinetry painted in a warm white and accented with satin-finished brass hardware. For subtle contrast, she painted the island and select cabinetry pale gray. Shiny surfaces—white glass perimeter counters, the white quartzite island top, the mirrored doors on the coffee station, and

ALL GROWN UP What’s a couple to do when their family has outgrown their home but loves their neighborhood too much to move?

For the clients of Courtney Yanni and Meghan De Maria, partners at Moss Design, the solution was a home renovation that included enlarging and reconfiguring the kitchen. The two designers were on board early in the project as Southport architect Donald William Fairbanks came up with a plan that pushed the back of the Fairfield beach house out and added

a pantry and mudroom along with the larger kitchen.

With two teenagers, the couple wanted a casual feel that encourages hanging together as a family. “They wanted kind of a beach vibe,” Yanni says.

The airy new kitchen sports white upper cabinets, interrupted here and there by open wood shelves, that float like clouds on an expanse of glossy skyblue tile. Shiny white quartz tops the lower cabinets and the island. “We often

PERSONALITY PLUS As a mom of five, interior designer Laura Gorman understands the importance of function and efficiency in the kitchen. That doesn’t mean skimping on the beauty, however. Because this Westport kitchen was in a spec home, Gorman and kitchen designer Karen Berkemeyer felt giving it personality was important. “I wanted it to have the character of an older home,” Gorman explains.

The design pros traded opinions on everything from the layout, which has all the surface space and storage options any home cook could dream up, to the colors and materials. Shaker-style cabinetry with brushed brass hardware gives the space its classic look. “People often put crown moldings at the top of cabinets,” Berkemeyer points out, “but we did a very simple molding with square details.”

The design team doesn’t know who came along and bought this house, but it’s easy to believe the pretty and practical kitchen is what won them over.

he hallmark of a Christopher Pagliaro Architects project is the marriage of structure and site to create place. Architecture should live and breathe its surroundings. Beyond the Connecticut coast’s picturesque beauty, there’s a wealth of treasures that offers the opportunity for escape.

A vacation home on Lake George met our client’s desire for entertainment facilities and guest quarters.

Local and native building materials— pine and fir tree trunks for beams and walls, cedar shakes for siding, and mountain stone for chimneys— inspired the project’s palette.

A nautical house off the coast of Newport, this project sits poised on a hilltop overlooking the waterfront.

Its rounded elements resemble a towering ship. Designed to use the natural elements of light and space, the interior is illuminated by floor-to-

ceiling windows that emphasize the home’s design.

Poised on a mountainous hilltop in Weston, this home grows out of its natural environment. This is exaggerated by the roofline that helps to define a secret garden that welcomes you to the home’s entry. The master suite serves as the core of this 90-degree plan, while the main stair transcends its three-stories by embracing the frameless glass wine room.

Reaching Farther Afield

F

or more than forty years, Wadia Associates has considerably added to its portfolio with a number of magnificent new houses and sympathetic renovations/additions to historic homes accompanied by interior design and landscape design projects.

While primarily based in Fairfield County, an area entrenched in

architectural history, work has taken Wadia Associates farther afield: New York, Rhode Island, Colorado, California, and Florida. The firm continues to expand its reach, designing a number of apartments in both contemporary and historic buildings.

Dinyar Wadia had many conversations with his clients regarding second homes, family retreats, and

retirement homes in Florida. It seemed logical to make Palm Beach the new base of operations as many of his existing clients lived within a 100-mile radius of the city. To accommodate demand from its global clientele, Wadia Associates opened an office in Palm Beach in 2019 and is at work on several projects across Florida.

revealed that the site—once a turn-ofthe-century blacksmithing operation— contained high levels of lead.

Undeterred, they painstakingly removed trees and existing landscaping, remediated the soil, and added a foot of new topsoil where necessary. They then discovered a kindred spirit in landscape designer Donna Christensen. “We were really talking the same language,” says Christensen, who for years had been shifting toward sustainable practices.

“They were totally vested in that.”

Eco-intention guided the overall park-like aesthetic, as well as the longterm care plan. It also required deliberate plant choices, including abundant natives, that would thrive with little or no fertilizers or pesticides—and zero synthetic chemicals, ever—and attract wildlife, such as hummingbirds and

To connect the landscape with the house, which exudes a bit of formality, Christensen created different moods for the front and back yards. A prolific Connecticut architect and builder of the 1920s, her work is commended for its traditional aesthetic and quality detailing. The Connecticut Chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA Connecticut) Alice Washburn Awards honor her legacy

by celebrating traditional house designs that have been carefully and creatively modified to meet today’s needs.

Winners are chosen in a trio of categories: accessory buildings, additions/renovations, and new construction.

CONNECTICUT RIVER HOUSE

Architect: Robert Orr & Associates | Photographer: Peter Aaron and Francis Dzikowski/OTTO Three buildings (a main house, carriage house, and summer house folly) and seven gardens combine to create this idyllic quarter-acre site on the Connecticut River. When Robert Orr & Associates entered the picture, few architectural details remained from the original Greek Revival-style house, so the architects set out to reimagine what once was (while simultaneously outfitting it with all the latest amenities). The end result is a personality-filled property inside and out that leans into its historic origins.

RECLAIMED CONTEMPORARY HOUSE

Instead of a date with the wrecking ball, the speculative developers behind this 1970s contemporary turned to Saniee Architects to rethink the dated design. The firm answered with a bold new modern/minimalist aesthetic and energy-efficient components. In addition to a new rear addition, wood deck, skin, and windows, the entire interior layout was reconfigured with today’s families and functionality in mind.

A successful project all round—proven by the fact that the 4,500-square-foot house sold shortly after it hit the market.

LINDEN SHORE RETREAT

This year-round Linden Shore haven in Branford proves good things do indeed come in small packages.

Clocking in at 1,520 square feet, the house (and detached two-car garage) beautifully manages a modest lot and exacting zoning regulations. Architect Joseph Sepot designed a long, narrow home that exudes the vintage charm and traditional detailing characteristic of nineteenth-century cottages. An open floor plan, unobstructed frontto-back views, and a screened porch that runs the width of the house lets the charming home live large.

The second-generation owners of this beloved family home in Guilford hoped to return the 1863 Italianate house to its original splendor. Among the many renovations, Campaigne Kestner Architects swapped an old addition with a new one that comprises a modern kitchen, mudroom, and primary suite.

While it was important to incorporate all the present-day bells and whistles in terms of comfort and convenience, the architects were careful to preserve the grand home’s historical roots. The “new” old house is now ready to welcome the next generation.

Notebook Hello, summer! While thoughts are turning to beach vacations, the design industry is busy, and there is much to report.

For the third year in a row, nonprofit Renovation Angel honored Stamfordbased DEANE with its Most Upcycled Kitchens from a Firm designation, which recognizes designers who go above and beyond to repurpose high-end kitchens and keep them out of landfills. DEANE has supported Renovation Angel for fifteen-plus years, donating more than sixty percent of the previously loved kitchens the firm has removed during renovations.

Rosemary Hallgarten swung open the doors of her new Norwalk showroom in June. The store, located on Main Street, provides the perfect backdrop for Hallgarten’s collection of sustainable rugs, fabrics, and accessories. Stop by and shop for artisanal products crafted from luxurious materials such as Tibetan wool, Peruvian alpaca, and natural hemp.

In other showroom news, the team at Wakefield Design Center has been busy renovating their Stamford space.

The addition of a new first floor adds 5,000 square feet to the already sprawling showroom. Expect more inventory on display and ready for immediate delivery.

Congratulations to Elizabeth Hendrickson and Joseph Werner on launching their new firm, Werner Hendrickson Landscape Architecture. The Stamford company aims to combine the designers’ passion for horticulture and artistic expression with the practical application of landscape design principles.

Surely, beautiful projects are on the horizon.

The Backstory The owners purchased this Fairfield home in 2017. At that time, we did extensive renovations to the entire house except for the kitchen. That room was tabled for a later project as the space was still serviceable but outdated. The couple really wanted a new kitchen,

The Result The objective was to warm up and enliven the color palette to create a cozy space to cook and entertain. The existBREAKWATER ing layout needed a few modifications. Ives Street Summary: This property rests among rolling hills and natural wetlands. The grand scale and architecture of the home dictated a more formal landscape. Wafts of hydrangeas and grasses soften the hardscapes, and native and non-native trees are grouped along the woodland.

The outdoor pool, designed by Christensen, has a two-sided vanishing edge. The entertainment-ready outdoor kitchen features stainless cabinetry and a natural green roof.

Old Quarry Summary: The primary challenge was creating a unique landscape without detracting focus from the picturesque vistas of Long Island Sound. To accomplish this, a clean style and neutral gray tones were used to frame the view. The water in the vanishing-edge pool blends seamlessly with the sea; this flowing visual is matched in the adjacent blackgranite spa tub. Given its quarry heritage, the property’s existing boulders and ledges were incorporated into the design.

Ridge Road Summary: This property offered little to invite the owner, an avid gardener, into the landscape.

Natural stone walls, repurposed bluestone patios, and a giant cedar pergola were designed to create a welcoming entrance to a more comfortable outdoor entertainment space. A lovely natural cedar gate and fence top more natural granite walls that surround the homeowners’ playground—a huge vegetable garden.

The Backstory: A new family fell in love with this traditional 1986 colonial home.

Over time, the exterior of the home needed significant repair. The owners wanted to rebuild the exterior with low-maintenance products that would last a lifetime and avoid any future renovations.

The Elements: With help from architect and builder Robert Berger, the owners decided to utilize a combination of Connecticut Stone’s Liberty Hill ThinStone and Full Veneer on this project for its beauty and durability in the harsh New England climate.

Due to this project being a renovation, ThinStone was applied to the existing structure. The Full Veneer was custom cut for the arched front door, an area that needed thicker stone. With stone applied, the owners no longer had to worry about water damage from the failed old siding. The outdoor kitchen utilized two different finishes for the counter and base—a polished Liberty Hill was used for the countertop, and Liberty Hill ThinStone for the base. The stone countertop and kitchen blended beautifully into the rest of the natural stone and landscaped space.

The Goal The client wanted to repurpose their existing playroom into a dedicated theater. The room needed to have the look and feel of a media room but have outstanding performance for the parents. The space also needed to be functional, comfortable, and inviting.

The Challenge The room design proved to be challenging due to its long and narrow shape. The theater’s entrance was at the bottom of a flight of stairs. A door was not feasible, so instead a Lutron blackout shade was installed at the base of the stairs to isolate and darken the environment.

The Backstory: Before the new clients even moved into their new home, the husband called very disappointed about the lower-level space and the realization that it was chopped up small rooms.

The Result: We couldn’t have a disappointed husband while the wife was super happy about all the other spaces in this 10,000-square-foot home. We immediately went to the drawing board and erased the walls around the golf simulator room. This created an open floor concept and made it one large man cave. We then visually divided it into the golf simulator zone complete with wet bar and high-top tables for golfer friends, a large lounge-like TV area, and last, the custom poker section. With the use of texture in neutral colors and highlights of black we gave our client a space that is functional for a variety of recreational activities.

The Goal This New Canaan double-story living space, complete with a dining area and second-story loft bar, is the heart of the home for a young family of five and their dog. Jeanne Collins of JerMar Designs was tasked with creating a “Modern Zen” space that would function for high-traffic family living and entertaining.

The Must-Haves The client wanted a serene, modern sanctuary that also could withstand the wear and tear of family living.

The yellow walls and tired furniture had to go.

Collins brought in furnishings with rounded edges that are both child-safe and visually appealing, and highperformance fabrics allow the clean, white palette to “wow” while working for the realities of family living.

The Turning Point This “Modern Zen” multi-purpose family space is light, bright, and calming—the turning point to achieve this look was the introduction of two new windows on either side of the mantel. These windows were installed to provide fabulous views to the back property, as well as to add balance around the fireplace. The windows, French doors, and trim were painted with a semi-gloss black for a modern look that pops against the clean, white walls and furnishings.

According to Dean, the shingled structure is meant to “recall the simplicity of Nantucket design, with deliberately spare details.” Dean is particularly proud of the staircase, which boasts “a very elegant rail that snakes up around the stairs,” he says.

hen longtime clients tasked architect Robert Dean with designing a year-round vacation home on Nantucket, one thing became abundantly clear: The view of the harbor should take top priority.

As such, Dean set out to envision an “upsidedown” floor plan, with the bedrooms and a family room on the ground level and the main living spaces above.

“This is meant to maximize both the views and the natural light,” explains Dean. “We wanted to deliver bright, airy living areas despite the fact that the house faces north, and the sun isn’t coming straight in.”

The 6,500-square-foot residence features six bedrooms—including a large bunk room—and a lofty open-concept upper floor complete with a cozy reading nook and a gracious terrace for dining alfresco (three additional terraces serve the primary suite, the living area, and the front facade). The interior is clad in crisp boards that recall the cabin of a boat, while the shingled exterior is clean and minimal. “We wanted to stay true to the simplicity of Nantucket design, so there are no fussy details,” says Dean.

Outbuildings include a boat barn, a kiteboard shed, and a pool house, which boasts two guest rooms, a game room, a kitchen, and a covered outdoor living area with a fireplace. “This is a very social, athletic family who loves to entertain,” says Dean, noting that the Connecticut-based clients always have their grown children, extended family, and dogs coming and going. “The home is designed around the ebb and flow of activity. It functions just as well for the

This emphasis on flexibility, in addition to the vistas, drove the interior design. “It needed to be user-friendly with nothing too precious,” says interior designer Jim Gauthier. “The interior architecture itself feels modern, with minimal moldings, yet there are references to traditional paneling.”

The simple interior finishes, coupled with a mostly neutral palette, “allow the view to pop.” A few splashes of

blue and orange, client-culled artwork, vintage and antique rugs and accessories, and unique lighting inject just enough spice. “We like our work to feel unexpected, fun, eclectic, and playful,” says Gauthier, “but first and foremost, it needs to function.”

Perhaps the most critical component of the project was getting the initial siting right, and Dean collaborated closely with LeBlanc Jones Landscape Architects. The 5.8-acre property encompasses meadow, marsh, wetland, and woods, and multiple elevation changes. “We actually moved the driveway to capitalize on the grade change,” says landscape architect Keith LeBlanc.

“The land rises up, then descends down to the house. There’s a moment along the drive when the view of the water is unveiled.”

The actual planting scheme centers on species native to the site. “There’s an interesting sequence of existing conditions, with upland plants transitioning down to wetland plants,” explains LeBlanc, who also worked with an environmental consultant to restore the aforementioned marsh. “The goal of this project,” says Dean, “was to capture the austere beauty of the site as well as the inherent elegance of traditional Nantucket structures.”

et on a windswept point with a commanding view of Long Island Sound, this island home seems to naturally spring up from its rugged coastal perch. The fact that virtually nothing greeting the eye is original to the site is a testimony to an inspired collaboration between architect, landscape designer, and interior

designer on a project of reinvention and restoration that touches on everything from turret to bedrock.

Spectacular location aside, architect David Scott Parker was decidedly underwhelmed with the existing structure the owners tasked him to reimagine.

Set on an imposing granite ledge, the house was long, boxy, too horizontal, and architecturally “confused,” says Parker. Disparate elements included bulky formal columns, a vaguely Frenchlooking tower, hipped rooflines, and eyebrow windows.

Rather than being daunted, Parker leaned into the chaos, redesigning the exterior in a location-appropriate Shingle style. “Shingle-style houses are always asymmetrical and playful,” explains Parker, who built upon some of the unique elements of the home—the conical tower containing the main interior staircase, for example—while working to unify the exterior appearance.

Like the wheelhouse of a classic sailing vessel, this masculine and nautically themed office commands a view of the property’s boathouse and dock—and the sea beyond.

Architect David Scott Parker opened up the dining room and kitchen, in part by exposing the sweep of the home’s spiral staircase; the varied hues of the chairs match those in a wall-sized painting by Larry Poons.

“We toned down a lot of the classicism and contrast,” says Parker. That included rounding off and shingling the staid columns supporting a screened porch facing the sound. A pergola installed along the rear length of the home helps break up the linearity of the existing building, and a new second-story belvedere extending from the primary bedroom adds angularity as well as a

perfect spot for the homeowners to take their morning coffee.

The original developer “had completely denuded the site,” save for a couple of trees at the very tip of the island, says Parker, presenting both a challenge and opportunity for landscape designer Edwina von Gal. As is her reputation, the award-winning designer took her cues from the natural environment.

“We had to listen to the ledge,” says von Gal, who advised the client: “This is built on a rock outcropping, so let’s let it be that way.” Rather than trying to create lawns on an island swept by harsh salt breezes and little water for irrigation, von Gal chose hardy and native plants and ornamentals. New river-stone walls were built to retain soil; plantings at the front of the house include bearberry for ground cover and low–maintenance

Gro-Low Sumac. Trees like American beech, tupelo, Eastern red cedar, and oaks were installed across the property.

“I looked at the Thimble Islands and said, ‘What grows here?’ ” says von Gal. “We built a bit of a garden in front so you’re not looking out on cars and pavement but nothing too colorful because we didn’t want to overwhelm the house or the view.”

Interior designer Lorraine Letendre, who passed away earlier this year, “was all about creating a sense of calm,” says Parker. “It’s a large home, but we wanted to create a comfortable space.” Materials like hand-slaked plaster walls and limed-oak floors softened the interior of the home, while walls were removed to create a more open floor plan, notably where the spiral staircase flows into the formal dining room.

Central to the home is the client’s office. Located on the ground floor, it features shelves adorned with sailing trophies and a curved bank of windows overlooking the von Gal-designed stone stairway leading to the boathouse and dock.

“Metaphorically, he’s the captain of the ship,” says Parker.

ate Hunt, principal and creative director at Kathryn Hunt Studio, grew up playing with watercolors and chalk instead of baby dolls and Barbies. After apprenticing with her home-builder father as a teen and then earning a business degree, she gravitated toward interior design, opening her own firm in West Hartford in 2015. All the while, Hunt continued to paint daily as a form of

meditation. Launching a line of wallcoverings, some of which began as watercolors, was a natural progression in her career.
