how hardware stores can capitalise on SA's retail resurgence
In March, Business Day reported that in January, South Africa’s retail landscape was experiencing a remarkable 7% year-onyear growth despite economic challenges, presenting significant opportunities for hardware retailers.
Moreover, hardware retailers should note the critical shift towards omnichannel experiences, which DIY & Industrial Trade News reported on extensively in 2024, with consumers increasingly researching products online before making in-store purchases.
Retail success hinges on strategic clarity. Investing in back-end innovationssuch as inventory visibility systems and logistics optimisation - can be key to
driving optimum success.
In this issue, Aquidneck provides a comprehensive overview of the paint sector’s performance in Q1 2025 (see page 12), discover what Excelsior Paints has in store for retailers as they turn 88 (see page 60), and Build it marks 40 years of heart and dedication (see page 68).

L&B Security Wholesalers lead the way, with an extensive range ofquality lock and ironmongery products forthe hardware, steel merchant and locksmith industry.
Despite early quarter challenges, the paint sector shows resilience with 0.9% volume growth in Q1 2025, Aquidneck has compiled a Q1 report that encompasses the performance of the paint sector holistically.
The first quarter of 2025 began on a weak footing, with January and February showing year-on-year declines. March, traditionally the strongest month in Q1, delivered a solid performance and helped offset earlier softness. Overall, the paint department — which includes brushware, sealants and adhesives (S&A), accessories, and related categories — achieved modest but noteworthy growth of +0.9% in volume. Value growth was stronger at +2.7%; however, with inflation also recorded at +2.7% for the same period, real value growth was effectively neutral.
• Paint led the department with a +1.7% increase in unit sales
• Brushware grew just +0.2% in volume but achieved +5% in value, suggesting a shift from bulk to individual purchases
• Sealants and adhesives remained stable at +0.2% in volume
• Additives and solvents declined by -2.4%
• Putty and fillers, a small segment, grew +2.8%, though this had limited impact on overall department performance.
The paint sector continues to navigate challenging economic conditions while showing signs of resilience. As construction sector pressures persist and consumer confidence indices turn sharply negative, the paint sector’s performance offers valuable
Chart 2: Segment performance breakdown and regional splits
The relative value share of categories within the paint department remains highly stable. Paint is the primary revenue driver, contributing 79% of retail value. In unit terms the relative positions fluctuate more because of the impact of the volume intensive accessory segments (drop sheets, etc) with paint contributing around 40% of the volume followed by brushware at 20% with accessories at 17% and S&A at 15% of the volume:
• PAINT: 40% of volume
• BRUSHWARE: 20%
• ACCESSORIES: 17%
• SEALANTS AND ADHESIVES: 15%.
REGIONAL SALES DISTRIBUTION
• GAUTENG: 36% of volume, 37% of value
• WESTERN CAPE: 15% in both volume and value
• KWAZULU-NATAL: 13% of volume, 14% of value
• REMAINING SIX PROVINCES: Combined 36% of volume, 24% of value.
insights for retailers managing inventory and pricing strategies. This comprehensive analysis examines segment trends, regional variations, and brand dynamics across the paint sector ecosystem during the Q1 of 2025.
Chart 3: Market context: DIY and construction sectors
The DIY market, particularly paint, shows mixed performance indicators: According to Stats SA, hardware, paint and glass represents 7% of total retail trade value (current prices), slightly below the long-term average of 8% (excluding December).
The construction sector remains under pressure, with Q4 2024 GDP growth at -2%, compared to national GDP growth of +0.9%.
Historically, construction GDP lags broader GDP by Q1–Q2, suggesting potential nearterm improvement.
However, sentiment is weak: US tariff instability and exchange rate volatility have driven both consumer and business confidence indices (BER) sharply negative at -20% and -5% respectively in Q1 2025.
INDUSTRY OVERVIEW
PAINT INDUSTRY
Chart 4: Paint segment insights
Wall paint remains the largest category within the paint department, contributing:
• 48% of value
• 39% of units.
Despite its dominance, the category has experienced a slight decline over the past five months.
Key sub-segments:
Primers and preparation: 11% (value), 10% (units). Other notable segments (6%-7% each): doors and trims, roof and gutter (excl. waterproofing), roof waterproofing, and wood care. Floor paint and metal care also play a significant role in both value and volume.
Chart 5: Wall paint trends
The category remains cyclical
• Tinting bases dip in December and recover in Q1; they generate 38% of value, 18% of litres
• Pastel bases dominate at 73% of tinting base value, followed by deep (12%) and clear (8%) variants – structures that are stable over time
• Pre-coloured paints represent 30% of value, but 60% of litres.
BY PACK SIZE
• 20L containers dominate in value (75%), followed by 5L (20%)
• Price differentiation by location/use case:
º Interior paints: Premium priced
º Exterior-specific paints: Mid-market
º Int/Ext variants: Budget-oriented.
Chart 7: Brand-level price trends
The price increase is largely due to a shift in product mix not real price increases, favouring higher-priced tinting bases over pre-coloured paints.
Average 20L wall paint price increased by +26% YoY, however actual prices declined:
• Pre-coloured: R1 043 (-7%)
• Tinting bases: R1 749 (-8%)
DULUX
• More competitive in pre-coloured segment.
DURAM
• Challenged in raising price position due to premium competitors’ aggressive promotion of their budget lines.
HOUSE BRANDS
• Priced at 50% of branded counterparts. If treated as one entity, they would be the largest wall paint brand in South Africa.
Chart 6: Wall Paint Pricing
Despite price correction efforts by some suppliers, average wall paint retail prices increased by +5% YoY, reaching:
• R745 per 20L container
• R56.80 per litre
• This includes:
º +6.8% for 20L
º +3.6% for 5L.
This pricing trend contradicts observed consumer behaviour, where budget products and retailers have outperformed premium offerings.
Chart 8: Brand structures and product families
Top brands emphasise product families to build brand equity:
DULUX
• Weatherguard: 27% (30% with ultra variants)
• Luxurious Silk: 17%
• Acrylic PVA: 16%
• Trade variants combined: 12%.
DURAM
• Wall & Ceiling: 29%
• Armaguard, Armatex, and Durasheen: double-digit contributions
• Additional six product families in single digits.
PLASCON
• No dominant product family
• Polvin and Micatex roughly equal in contribution around 20% each
• Four product families at ~10% each
• Five additional in singledigit contributions.

brushware: essential inventory for profitable hardware retail
Recent supply chain adjustments have created opportunities for retailers who maintain comprehensive brushware inventories. With manufacturers increasing local production to mitigate import challenges, hardware stores now have access to more consistent supply and improved margins on these essential items.
Essential brushware categories for retail success
PAINT APPLICATION BRUSHES
The foundation of any brushware section is quality paint brushes as they drive both standalone sales and complementary purchases. A well-structured paint brush display should include:
• Synthetic bristle brushes: Ideal for water-based paints and offering excellent finish quality
• Natural bristle brushes: Perfect for oil-based paints and varnishes with superior paint holding capacity
• Specialty applicators: Including foam brushes, trim brushes, and radiator brushes for specific applications
• Roller systems: Various nap lengths for different surface textures.
Paint brushes offer excellent margins while driving additional paint and accessory sales.
The brushware segment represents one of the most consistent revenue generators for hardware retailers. In South Africa, the segment has shown remarkable resilience even during economic downturns – like during the pandemic – as brushes remain essential tools for both professional contractors and DIY enthusiasts.
CLEANING AND MAINTENANCE BRUSHES
Household and commercial cleaning brushes represent year-round stable sales:
• Scrub brushes: For floors, decks, and general hard-surface cleaning
• Utility brushes: Multipurpose cleaning tools for various household applications.
These evergreen products maintain steady turnover throughout the year and benefit from prominent display positions near related cleaning products.
WIRE BRUSHES AND INDUSTRIAL TOOLS
Critical for construction and metalworking applications:
• Hand-held wire brushes: For rust removal, surface preparation, and weld cleaning
• Cup brushes: For use with power drills and grinders
• Stripping brushes: For paint and coating removal.
These higher-margin specialty items appeal to professionals and serious DIY customers, creating opportunities for add-on tool and accessory sales.
OUTDOOR AND BROOM CATEGORY
Essential for property maintenance and seasonal cleaning:
• Push brooms: Heavy-duty options for workshops, driveways, and commercial applications
• Garden brushes: For specialised outdoor cleaning tasks
• Specialty outdoor brushes: Including gutter cleaning brushes and extension handle systems.
Strategic seasonal displays can drive significant volume during spring cleaning and autumn preparation periods.
RETAIL MERCHANDISING STRATEGIES FOR MAXIMUM PROFIT
Effective merchandising approaches include:
• Grouping brushes by application rather than brand
• Creating good-better-best pricing tiers within each category
• Using cross-merchandising near complementary products (paints, cleaning supplies).
• Extended shelf life without deterioration or obsolescence concerns
• Year-round sales with predictable seasonal spikes.
Retailers who establish reputations for quality brush selection create long-term customer loyalty.

Tips for retailers to effectively merchandise brushware to maximise sales
Hamilton’s Brushware uses a merchandising concept called ‘category merchandising’, where they merchandise their products in application-specific categories. Some of these categories would be: ‘Rough & Textured Surfaces’, ‘Smooth Walls & Ceilings’, ‘Varnish and Wood Treatments’ etc. Hamilton’s Brushware believes that this will help retailers ensure that they guide the consumer to make the correct purchase decision based on the project at hand. Not every customer knows, for example, that you need a long-pile roller to paint wall with a textured surface, so if the retailer merchandises the products according to their specific use, it helps the consumer to quickly find the correct product to solve their painting challenge.
Display strategies for retailers
Cross-merchandising brushware with a suitable coating (eg. Hamilton’s Woodcoate brush sets on a ‘fishhook’ next to varnishes and wood coatings) can boost sales by facilitating the customer purchase decision.
Another variation of this is using smaller mobile stands with suitable brushware and placing these next to paint promotional displays – once again, this is helpful to customers and serves a dual purpose of:
• Reminding the customer that if they are buying paint, they will need an applicator,
• Helping them with their purchase decision by presenting them with the suitable applicator for the coating on promotion.

retailer’s guide to pliers and cutters: essential tools for every toolbox
Pliers and cutters are among the most versatile and widely used tools in any hardware store’s inventory.
From professional tradespeople to DIY enthusiasts, these essential hand tools are crucial for gripping, cutting, bending, and shaping materials across a range of applications. As a retailer, understanding their key features and functions will help guide your customers to the right tools.
While pliers and cutters are often grouped together, they serve different purposes. Pliers are designed for gripping, bending, and manipulating materials, featuring two handles, a pivot point, and jaws. Cutters (or cutting pliers), on the other hand, are made specifically for cutting wires, cables, or small metal parts. Some pliers, like combination pliers, include a cutting edge, but standalone cutters - such as diagonal or end cutters - are purely for cutting. In short, not all pliers are cutters, and not all cutters function as pliers.
Why focus on pliers and cutters?
Pliers and cutters are indispensable in various industries, including electrical work, plumbing, automotive repairs, construction, and general maintenance. Stocking the right selection ensures that customers – from professionals to hobbyists – can find exactly what they need, leading to increased sales and customer satisfaction.
Key types of pliers and cutters
Each type of plier and cutter is designed for specific tasks. Understanding these distinctions allows you to educate your customers on the best choices for their projects:
• COMBINATION PLIERS – A multipurpose tool ideal for gripping, twisting, and cutting wires
• LONG NOSE PLIERS – Perfect for precision work in tight spaces, commonly used in electrical and jewellery work
• DIAGONAL CUTTERS – Designed for cutting wires and small metal pieces with a sharp, angled jaw
• END CUTTING PLIERS – Great for clipping off protruding nails, wires, or rivets
• SLIP JOINT PLIERS – Adjustable jaw settings make these suitable for various gripping tasks
• WATER PUMP PLIERS – Often referred to as groove joint pliers, these are ideal for plumbing and gripping large objects
• LOCKING PLIERS – Also known as Vise-Grips, these provide a strong grip and can be locked in place
• WIRE STRIPPERS AND CRIMPERS –Essential for electricians, these tools make precise cuts and crimp electrical connectors effectively.
What to look for when stocking pliers and cutters
As a retailer, offering high-quality tools is key. Here are some factors to consider when curating your selection:
• MATERIAL AND DURABILITY – Choose high-carbon or chrome vanadium steel for strength and longevity
Educating customers on tool usage and care can enhance their shopping experience. Consider:
• In-store demos on how to use different pliers and cutters
• Bundled deals with complementary tools like wire strippers or tool pouches
• Signage highlighting key features and uses.
Providing the right tools and educating customers helps retailers boost sales and guide shoppers to the perfect choice.

introducing new and innovative gardena secateurs range for 2025
Few tools are used as frequently as secateurs. They are in use almost year-round and are indispensable for plant care. This is precisely why garden owners appreciate long-lasting secateurs that cut powerfully and reliably while being comfortable to hold.
POWERFUL, PRECISE CUTTING
Depending on the model, the new GARDENA powerhouses can be used to cleanly separate branches with a diameter of between 20mm to 24mm. The GARDENA secateurs’ powerful cuts are ensured by the precision-ground blades made of highquality steel, produced from exclusive alloy. In addition, the blades are coated with Power Coating. This specially developed coating creates a smoother surface and reduces friction as the blades slide through the branches. The new coating also protects the blades against corrosion and resin. Plant residues can also be removed more easily.
NO DOING THINGS BY HALVES, EVEN IN TERMS OF COMFORT
Secateurs should not only cut accurately but should also be comfortable to hold. The best possible comfort for effortless use is therefore part of the high-quality standards of all GARDENA secateurs. With their ergonomically shaped handles, they are particularly comfortable to hold and enable fatigue-free working – even during demanding gardening work.
Depending on the model, the cutting or grip width can be set for different cut sizes and for different hand sizes. A durable stainless-steel spring,
which is mounted on the inside of the PremiumCut Pro models, provides the spring back. This prevents it from becoming dirty or lost. A buffer between the handles also protects the wrist. The single-handed safety lock enables the secateurs to be
easily closed and stored after use.
The fibreglass-reinforced handles are particularly robust. Depending on the model, they are made of more than 45% recycled plastic. Particularly clever: The new GARDENA secateurs can be fully dismantled for easy cleaning and maintenance. This also extends the life span of the secateurs.
GARDENA has been proving its real cutting expertise since 1975. Passionate gardeners notice this with every cut. The same will be guaranteed in future thanks to continuous development and equipment with new, clever product features. All secateurs are made in Germany and offer warranty of up to 25 years for the secateurs, depending on the model.

WELDING IS LIKE SEWING WITH FIRE
Aerolite® Soft touch: Safety-First Insulation
In today’s construction landscape, the materials we choose must meet rising demands for safety, efficiency, and sustainability. Aerolite, a high-performance glass wool insulation, stands out – not just for its thermal and acoustic properties, but for something just as critical: its SANS 53501-1 A1 fire rating.
WHAT THE A1 RATING REALLY MEANS
The A1 rating, under South Africa’s SANS 53501-1 standard, is the highest possible classification for fire safety. It certifies that Aerolite is non-combustible, produces no flaming droplets, and emits minimal smoke. In fire scenarios, this means Aerolite won’t fuel the flames — giving occupants more time to evacuate and minimising structural damage. This level of safety is especially crucial in high-density residential, commercial, and public buildings where lives and assets depend on fire-safe materials.
MORE THAN JUST NON-COMBUSTIBLE
Aerolite doesn’t stop at safety. It also offers:
• Excellent thermal performance, reducing energy costs year-round
• Effective sound insulation, ideal for homes, offices, and schools
• Eco-friendly composition, made with up to 80% recycled glass
• Safe handling and a long service life without loss of performance.
THE SMARTER STANDARD
As building codes evolve and expectations rise, Aerolite checks every box: safe, efficient, sustainable. Its A1 fire rating sets it apart as a leader — not just in insulation, but in responsible building practice. When safety is non-negotiable, Aerolite is the clear choice.
When every second counts, the MAMBA Unit delivers. Designed for fast response and maximum mobility, the MAMBA transforms your bakkie or work vehicle into a fully functional fire-fighting system — anytime, anywhere. Built tough for the harshest conditions, it’s ideal for farms, construction sites, remote areas, and emergency teams. Whether it’s for controlling wildfires, managing flare-ups, or ensuring on-site safety, the MAMBA gives you confidence and control at your fingertips. Compact. Reliable. Always ready.
warranty gaps trigger national product registration push
New data reveals nearly half of South African water heater owners miss out on full warranty benefits due to unregistered products.
In a sector where after-sales service can make or break customer satisfaction, recent internal audits reveal that up to 45% of warranty claims for water heaters are submitted without product registration or proof of installation, a trend that delays servicing, increases administrative overhead, and leaves customers frustrated.
Findings by the plumbing industry note inconsistent compliance with post-installation protocols, particularly around warranty activation and product traceability.
In response to this market challenge, Kwikot, one of South Africa’s leading manufacturers of water heating solutions, has launched a national Product Registration Campaign, designed to drive compliance, enhance customer support, and reward installation professionals for their role in long-term customer care.
SMART AFTER-SALES STARTS AT INSTALLATION
“It’s no longer enough to deliver a great product – customers expect seamless support too,” says Kwikot MD Murray Crow. “Proper registration ensures we can verify ownership, improve turnaround times, and offer better service. It also enables us to engage directly with our end users, something the industry has traditionally lacked.”
Kwikot’s Register & Win campaign introduces a digital-first registration portal and a R300 000 incentive pool to encourage early participation and consistent compliance from both homeowners and installers.
CAMPAIGN HIGHLIGHTS
• First 300 valid registrations receive a R500 retail voucher (limited to one per person)
• All successful registrants will be entered into a draw to win a voucher worth R1 500 each
• The plumber with the most verified product registrations by 30 June 2025 wins R50 000 in cash.
The campaign runs from 1 April until 30 June 2025 and is open to all Kwikot geysers/ heaters (electric, solar or gas).
WHY THIS MATTERS TO THE TRADE
According to SANS 10254 standards, fixed electric storage water heaters must be installed according to clearly defined safety and registration protocols. Yet, the plumbing industry notes that only 52% of registered plumbers consistently follow postinstallation documentation practices, including warranty activation.
Kwikot’s campaign aims to address this gap by streamlining the registration process and incentivising industry-wide accountability.
• The campaign encourages all registered plumbers and consumers to register their Kwikot geyser/water heater online by scanning the QR code.
• Registering your Kwikot product ensures:
º Full warranty activation and coverage
º Access to important safety and product updates
º Proof of ownership for future service or support
º Automatic entry into our exclusive product registration giveaway.
To register a product or access campaign resources, visit: https://www.kwikot.com/kwikot-service
Trade professionals, retailers and installers are encouraged to support registration at the point of sale or installation.

waterproofing for winter? choose sika blackseal lastic
As the majority of South Africa transitions from the rainy season into the colder, drier months of winter, it is easy to overlook the importance of continued waterproofing maintenance.
The skies are clearing, the rain has subsided, and surfaces feel dry to the touch. But this seasonal shift is precisely the moment when homeowners, property managers, and DIY enthusiasts should prioritise their waterproofing efforts. Winter offers a valuable window of opportunity to repair, seal, and reinforce vulnerable areas — and that’s where Sika BlackSeal Lastic shines.
Sika BlackSeal Lastic is a high-performance, rubberised waterproof emulsion designed for both preventative maintenance and minor waterproofing repairs. It’s a water-based, ready-to-use formula that creates a seamless, flexible barrier against moisture and water ingress, making it ideal for DIY projects and small-scale contractors who need a reliable, user-friendly product.
Its flexibility allows it to bridge hairline cracks and accommodate surface movement. It adheres to concrete, brick, metal, and cementitious substrates, making it versatile for
various home and commercial applications.
Environmentally conscious and waterbased, it’s non-toxic, solvent-free, and safe to use in enclosed spaces like basements. Users appreciate its ready-touse convenience — no mixing, no diluting, and no complex methods. It applies
easily with a block brush or roller and forms a durable, UV-resistant film. This UV resistance is particularly valuable in South African conditions, where surfaces face intense sunlight after heavy rains.
Sika BlackSeal Lastic is ideal for flat roofs, flashing repairs, sealing ponds, dampproofing boundary walls, and lining retaining walls. For best results, surfaces should be clean, dry, and free of oil, dust, or loose particles. Apply in two coats, letting the first coat dry fully before the second. In highmovement or cracked areas, reinforcing with a membrane boosts durability. Avoid applying in rainy weather or just before a cold front.
WHY CHOOSE SIKA BLACKSEAL LASTIC?
• Ultimate waterproofing power: Ideal for ponds, water features, and permanently moist areas
• Durable and flexible: Withstands movement, remains watertight
• Eco-friendly: Safe for aquatic life when cured
• Easy application: Brush, roller, or sprayer for a smooth finish.
For retailers guiding customers, Sika BlackSeal Lastic is the smart solution for winter-proofing South African homes with confidence and ease.
MORE THAN COVERAGE, IT’S CONFIDENCE
Take advantage of the dry season and waterproof your home with Sika® BlackSeal Lastic – Your go-to rubberised waterproofing solution tried and tested for over 115 years.

preparing your roof for a flawless finish with medal roof coat
Ensuring the longevity and aesthetic appeal of a roof is paramount for any homeowner. A high-quality coating, such as Medal Roof Coat, offers customers excellent protection against the elements and enhances the overall look of their property. However, achieving optimal results requires meticulous preparation – retailers should share the following steps with their customers.
STEP 1: THOROUGH INSPECTION AND ASSESSMENT
Before commencing any preparation, a comprehensive inspection of the roof is crucial. WHY IT’S IMPORTANT: This step allows identification of any existing damage, such as cracked or missing tiles, loose flashing, or areas of moss growth. Addressing these issues before applying the new coating is essential for ensuring the integrity and longevity of the final finish. Coating over damaged areas will not solve underlying problems and may even exacerbate them.
STEP 2: COMPREHENSIVE CLEANING
A clean surface is fundamental for the proper adhesion of Medal Roof Coat. WHY IT’S IMPORTANT: Dirt, dust, mildew, algae, and other contaminants can impede the coating’s ability to bond effectively with the roof surface. This can lead to premature peeling, blistering, and a compromised protective layer. FOR TILED ROOFS: Use a stiff brush to remove loose debris. For stubborn growth like moss, consider using a specialised roof cleaner designed for roof substrate, rinse thoroughly with a low-pressure hose. Avoid high-pressure washing, as it can damage tiles and force water under the roof covering.
FOR METAL ROOFS: Brush away loose dirt and debris. Wash the surface with a mild detergent solution and a soft brush or cloth. Rinse thoroughly with clean water, ensuring no soap residue remains.
STEP 3: REPAIRING EXISTING DAMAGE
Addressing any identified damage is a critical step before applying the coating.
WHY IT’S IMPORTANT: Coating over damaged areas will not provide a long-lasting solution.
Water ingress through cracks or gaps can lead to structural damage and compromise the effectiveness of the roof coating.
CRACKED OR MISSING TILES: Replace damaged tiles with matching spares. Ensure they are securely fixed.
LOOSE FLASHING: Secure any loose flashing around chimneys, vents, and roof edges. Use appropriate sealant or fasteners designed for roofing applications.
DAMAGED MORTAR: Repair any crumbling or missing mortar in tiled roofs.
RUST ON METAL ROOFS: Treat any areas of
rust with a suitable rust converter and primer before applying the roof coat.
STEP 4: PRIMING (IF NECESSARY)
Depending on the type and condition of the roof, a primer may be required to ensure optimal adhesion and performance of Medal Roof Coat.
WHY IT’S IMPORTANT: Primers create a uniform and stable surface for the topcoat to bond to. They can also improve adhesion on porous surfaces or those with slight staining.
STEP 5: APPLYING MEDAL ROOF COAT
Medal Roof Coat is a superior quality paint that provides long-life exterior durability combined with excellent alkali resistance. This product will provide complete protection against the harshest climate conditions. Medal Roof Coat has a sheen finish and a spreading rate of 5-7m2/litre. It can be applied with a paintbrush, block brush, or furpile/lambswool paint roller. It is touch dry in an hour and can be recoated after four hours.
By following these steps diligently and prioritising safety, homeowners can effectively prepare their roofs for a new coat of Medal Roof Coat, ensuring a durable, aesthetically pleasing, and long-lasting finish that will protect their investment for years to come. Remember to always consult the product data sheets for specific application instructions and safety guidelines related to Medal Roof Coat.

• And so much more.
Retailers – you never know what surprise is waiting for you – but one thing is for sure, you will not want to miss it.
Come celebrate 88 amazing years with 88 reasons to smile.
FROM DUSTY BEGINNINGS TO NATIONAL REACH
Founded in 1937 by German immigrant Walter Rauner and his wife, Excelsior Paints began life in a modest Johannesburg factory during the city’s early mining days. The original gallon drum – now an iconic symbol – was a staple in hardware stores for decades.
A lot has changed since then. When Guy Lawson joined the company in 1995, Excelsior was still proudly family-run but poised for bigger things. Today, the company produces nearly 88 000 litres of paint per day, six days a week – a fitting number for its 88th year.
THE WOMAN BEHIND THE LEGACY
As we raise a toast to 88 years, it is only fitting to shine a spotlight on one of the driving forces behind the company’s
modern success – Kim van Rensburg.
A Witwatersrand University graduate and mother of five, Van Rensburg joined the business in 2000, stepping into a behindthe-scenes administrative role alongside her father Ron and brother Guy. But it did not take long for her sharp business acumen, extraordinary work ethic, and eye for detail to elevate her to a key leadership position.
Today, Van Rensburg is a director of Excelsior Paints, overseeing an array of departments including administration, finance, HR, and legal affairs. She leads a team of more than 200 employees, creating a workplace culture built on accountability, excellence, and mutual respect.
But Van Rensburg is no paper-pusher confined to an office. She is equally at home on the factory floor, liaising with production managers, ensuring schedules are met, and upholding the company’s high standards. Her hand is in every corner of the operation, ensuring everything runs like a well-oiled machine.
“Van Rensburg is the glue that holds it all together,” say those who work closely with her. “She may not always be in the spotlight, but her leadership is irreplaceable.”
As Excelsior pushes forward into the future, Kim Van Rensburg's steady, strategic leadership ensures that the company is always one step ahead – adapting to market demands, supporting innovation, and never losing sight of its core values.

Excelsior Paint’s eyes are firmly on the future. It is investing in innovation and leading the charge toward greener practices:
• The solar-powered factory (in partnership with Decentral Energy Services)
• Advanced water purification systems
• Recyclable solvent packaging
• The ‘Return the Pack’ initiative: Customers
can return empty paint buckets to selected retailers, where leftover paint is recycled for charitable use.
The Excelsior Academy of Paint Excellence, its national delivery network of 40+ drivers, and continued investment in local job creation show the company’s commitment to building a better, more sustainable South Africa.
88 YEARS YOUNG –AND JUST GETTING STARTED
With three generations of the van Rensburg family still involved, Excelsior Paints is a powerful example of how tradition and modern thinking can thrive together.
So, here is to 88 years of colour, care, and community – and to the next 88.

build it convention 2025:'40 for better' — celebrating four decades of heart and purpose
This year’s Build it Convention marked a major milestone – the Group’s 40 th anniversary. Held from 13 to 16 May 2025 at Sun City and themed ‘40 for Better’, the event was more than a celebration; it was a powerful statement of intent for the years to come.
The experience was elevated from the very first moment delegates set foot on site. From regular WhatsApp updates to a dedicated Facebook page and even a Spotify playlist, the journey to ‘Better’ was underway. Sweet surprises, thoughtful room drops, and a well-produced 40 for Better Legacy Book set the tone. Featuring stories from retailers, supply partners and service providers, the keepsake captures the values and history that define the heart of Build it – courage, determination, and a commitment to building communities.
DAY ONE: WELCOME TO THE CELEBRATION –BETTER ON THE BEACH

THE DRIVE TOWARDS BETTER
The strategic update was anchored by a unified vision: To be the first-choice brand for Southern Africans wanting to build, maintain, and improve ‘things’ of enduring value.
Du Preez reflected on Build its evolution from a small KwaZulu-Natal-based initiative in 1985 to a powerhouse brand in South Africa, Eswatini, Lesotho, Namibia, and Mozambique, responsible for over 11 000 jobs. With initiatives like house builds, under-13 soccer and netball sponsorships and major giveaways, Build it continues to support and uplift the communities.
Pydigadu emphasised the strength of independent retail, highlighting TOPS and Build it as strong examples of voluntary trading success. “Corporate structures can’t replicate what we do,” she noted. Her focus was on SPAR’s strategic vision to ‘Harden, Grow, Clarify and Execute’.
Holwill shared store numbers and the ‘Lets BEtter’ campaign (Let’s Be Better), an internal staff campaign defining service values like: Know Better, Greet Better, Dress Better, Be Better. He spoke about onboarding Ubuhle People Solutions thus upscaling training efforts dramatically (from 6 to 33 trainers), underscoring the belief that people are the key to better execution.
Scully outlined key metrics and product expansion across dropshipments, cement volumes and housebrand growth. Plascon was acknowledged as the new housebrand
paint supplier. Swartland’s exclusive fusion door range was introduced, and the brandnew housebrand cement packaging was unveiled with Sephaku and Cemza being the new housebrand suppliers.
Quayle detailed a marketing transformation
// The unified vision is to be the first-choice brand for Southern Africans wanting to build, maintain, and improve "things" of enduring value //
centred on telling the Build it story. He focused on data insights and performance marketing plans – right people, right message, and right location.
Englund focused on removing retail friction. His ‘Frictionless Retail’ presentation mapped both retailer and customer needs: effortless checkout, intelligent tools, omnichannel integration and seamless ordering. The introduction of Build it Bedrock aims to support this vision with solid data and insights.
SURVIVOR LESSONS FOR THE BUILD IT TRIBE
The day closed with a compelling session by Survivor SA host Nico Panagio, who shared the parallels between surviving in the wild and thriving in business. He unpacked key fundamentals for playing the BETTER game both in Survivor and business.
Special guest and winner of Survivor SA Season 4 (Maldives) Hykie Berg shared his extraordinary journey of recovery. His message was clear – you are not a victim of your circumstance, but rather the architect of it.
The Build it ‘Tribe’ made up of retail members, a regional executive, and a supply partner, were in ‘tribal council’ attendance and unpacked the two key fundamentals from Panagio’s delivery that most resonated with them. They shared their experiences and success stories that not only amazed their fellow retail members in the audience, but offered hope, motivation, and inspiration to them as well.

Master Lock is recognized around the world as the authentic, enduring name in padlocks and security products. Since our founding in 1921, we have worked hard to earn and maintain the trust of our customers by delivering on our promise of strength and quality and by continually setting new standards for lock design, application and performance. As the largest global manufacturer and marketer of padlocks, we continue to build our founder’s passion for innovation, quality and compelling value into our expanding lines of security solutions.
Master Lock Chain Gang
There is a saying that a chain is only as strong as its weakest link. When it comes to security, there is no better explanation of why it is so important to look at a security solution in its entirety. There is no point in having the toughest padlocks, but then using them with a sub-standard chain or cable. The thieves will just leave the padlocks and attack the weak chain or cable in order to gain access.
Master Lock has a range of chains and cables to suit every requirement.
Top of the range is the Master Lock hardened square link chain, available in pre-manufactured lengths and shackle diameters. These chains are twice as tough and resistant to bolt cutters and angle grinders than standard hardened chains. They are also housed in a plastic sheath for protection against scratching.
There is also a comprehensive range of braided steel cables. Manufactured
combination and keyed cables. For convenience, a range of galvanised chain and padlock sets are available. The round link chain is housed in a nylon sheath and the padlock rubber coated for protection. Various colour options available. These sets are ideal for bicycles and motorcycles and situations where less security is required.
