What is the cycle of homelessness? I learned about the cycle of homelessness very early on as a young man when I saw many of my friends come and go and come and go from our New Life Evangelistic residential leadership training program. At 14 I did not understand much about alcoholism or mental illness, job loss, imprisonment, emergency room stays and sober living homes. I only knew a sea of faces, men whom I’d gotten to know, befriended, never knew why they left or what they were doing with their lives and then they would just show up again out of the blue, begging to be let back into the program.
NLEC has learned a lot over the years about the cycle by being there for those in need. The cycle of homelessness is that situation where poverty becomes a long cycle of handouts that eventually result in a sense of victimhood among those experiencing it. Handouts that do not address the root causes of homelessness can result inadvertently in doing more harm to those who regularly use the help. For example, hungry people need food, but sadly food programs that do not provide more than food can create a system of dependency wherein people do not rise of their situation to live independently. The same can be said of free clothing programs or anything for that matter that is simply given in a tokenistic way.
How is NLEC working to break the cycle of homelessness? Every person experiencing homelessness is different. They each have different experiences and have developed their own coping skills. Just as each may have different health issues, even so each will have various strengths and weaknesses in getting along with others. Every person’s particular struggle is unique.
Here are five of the resources NLEC employs to break the cycle of homelessness:
1. Community : New Life is a church and we believe that Jesus has called us to live together in community with those experiencing homelessness to break the power it has in their lives, one person at a time. Community is fostered in many different ways, not just in living and working together, but in how we treat one another on a daily basis. Community involves building trust in other people, something that in this world many people have a hard time with. Many come to us without one person we could contact in case of emergency. For those who remain in the community of the homeless, they come to identify themselves as part of a new family, the Body of Christ.
2. Sobriety : Entering into the NLEC residential leadership training program means giving up alcohol and drugs, even ones that are legal now like marijuana. It is not done alone, it is done within a group of peers who are also taking it one day at a time, working to stay sober no matter what life throws at them.
3. Faith: Members of the NLEC community engage in regular Bible studies and community meetings. They seek to grow spiritually in their relationship with Jesus and with one another. This faith in the resurrection of Jesus Christ is the root of real change, by which any lasting growth actually occurs. It is this faith that informs everything else we live by. Everyday members may ask , “Why am I still here?” And the answer is, “Jesus called me and I want to do what He wants me to do.”
Breaking the Cycle of Homelessness Continued on Page 3
4. Work: Members of the community work together in a variety of different ways, whether it is doing mailings, computer work, providing security at a shelter, working in the free store, caring for livestock, or working in radio or NLEC TV. The places and people we work with may be different, but the purpose behind the work remains the same: we are living for Jesus Christ, in and through the power of His resurrection that is very present in us.
5. Self-sacrifice: our voluntary efforts full time for the Lord are done in a spirit of self-sacrifice. Romans 12:1 -2 says, “I appeal to you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world but be transformed by the renewal of your mind that you may prove what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.” This act of transformation is what every person needs. For those who have lost everything discover when they have dedicated themselves to the service of Christ they receive a new lease on life in this world. When working with people one solution does not fit all. There are many problems that lead into the cycle of homelessness and many solutions that can lead out. Each person is different. We try to infuse a sense of purpose with the aforementioned five resources into everything we do, knowing that we can only do what the person will allow. As a result, NLEC tries to build friendships and foster trust within the homeless community. This is not easy to do. But we are encouraged not to give up. Frequently we sometimes meet people years later who come back to let us know how they’ve been doing. Some are housed and let us know that all our work was not in vain, and that God was not through with them yet. by Chris L Rice, OFS
New Life Evangelistic Center has three First Responder teams for the homeless. They go throughout St. Louis City locating and helping those who live outside. NLEC also has a fourth team that reaches out in St. Louis and St. Charles County along with periodic visits to Jefferson County. The team typically starts their day with prayer and Bible study. So many people suffer alone and afraid outside. These outreach teams meet people where they are at in life. That is why New Life Evangelistic Center has street outreach teams that minister to the homeless every day of the year. They strive to be the hands and feet of Jesus Christ as they pray, fill the physical needs of the homeless, and offer hope for change.
After loading up their vehicles with supplies, they proceed throughout the St. Louis area looking for people living outside in the cold. Each team visits 80 to 100 people. The homeless they visit are given food, water, clothing, sleeping bags, tents, and other supplies. We pray with them and share the word of God with them. There are many heart-wrenching stories that these teams hear on a daily basis. One such story is of a man living in his car. He used to have a construction company and was in an automobile wreck, which resulted in him being in a coma. When he woke up, he had nothing left but his vehicle. Even though all he had was his car, he allowed three or four others to sleep there too.
There is a desperate need among the homeless living outside for housing, drug counseling and ministry. The suffering people who need help, also need to hear that Jesus Christ loves them! The New Life mission is not only to provide the help needed to save lives, but to also bring the message of the Gospel to those who are without shelter.
Without you sharing your tax deductible gifts, the NLEC 1st Responders Outreach teams could not minister the gospel to the homeless in word and deed. Please pray that lives are changed by the relationships we build on the streets. Please also give the items we need throughout the year, such as hygiene kits, clothing, food, water, and blankets. Volunteers are also needed in this essential service. Learn more about The New Life Evangelistic Center by calling (314)421-3020 or go to WWW.NLECSTL.ORG.

"I became homeless as covid ended, struggling with substance abuse and mental health issues. I rededicated my life to God and quit drugs but remained plagued with scraping by with my small business. As I live outside, I have learned to focus on the future and stop staring at the past. I am trying to be a blessing and do the NRT (next right thing) and stay sober for just ONE MORE DAY Today I choose to let go and let God work in my life. I don’t have a place or my children or a wife but maybe if I stay on my straight path, I will get them back. I am working to get a home of my own. I am thankful for the food, water and other assistance that the staff at New Life Evangelistic Center bring to me along with the Word of God and words of encouragement.” Anthony

Jerrold panhandles in south St. Louis in order to survive. Although he is a cancer patient and receives regular radiation treatments, he was told that he was not sick enough to get disability. So, he lives in a vacant house by night and stands on the street corner by day. The winter weather makes it very hard for Jerrold. Daily New Life Evangelistic Center’s winter outreach teams are helping hundreds of men and women who are living outside through-out the greater St. Louis area.
I was jobless and homeless living in my car. Then I found out that I have a progressive disorder called Huntington’s Disease.
It was then I came to New Life Evangelistic Center. The NLEC community has helped turn my life around. I now can work with the New Life team doing God’s work. It is so humbling helping the homeless. I look forward to waking up every day to help the homeless through the work of New Life Evangelistic Center. I thank the Lord Jesus Christ for saving me every day.

I lived homeless in Los Angeles California for about 4 years, then June 1, 2023, I moved to Las Vegas, Nevada and I lived in Vegas for a few months. After that I moved to Utah and lived in Utah for almost a year. It was then I moved back to St. Louis, Missouri. I lived with my father off and on. I was basically homeless. My father encouraged me to join the New Life program, and I got in contact with Reverend Ray. I joined the residential leadership training program because I was homeless and I needed more guidance in my relationship with God. As a result, I am spending more time in prayer and daily Bible reading. I listen to gospel music and it lifts my spirits in the Lord. Now I am helping Pastor Ray provide daily for other homeless people who are presently living outside. I’m so grateful that God used this program to deliver me from homelessness. Chavez
I became homeless because my health issues worsened to the point where I couldn’t work. As a result total despair overwhelmed me. It was New Life Evangelistic Center that found me and gave me hope and a place of refuge.
New Life renewed my faith in Christ Jesus. I thank NLEC for helping me and saving my life. Now I am able to help those less fortunate than me as I am filled with the Holy Spirit. Thank you, Lord! Thomas
One year ago, before I entered the New Life Leadership Training Program (LTP), I was the embodiment of sin and actively lived every day in sin. I was hopelessly lost and cared not about my soul! I participated blindly in committing every wrong thing and act. I simply existed for Ricky and Ricky alone. Yes, I was living in sin, living for myself. But my Father God kept me alive!! Through the Residential Training Program, I am living now to serve as well as worship Father God! NLEC allowed me the time out to review my sorry life of sin. New Life gave me the flow of God's Spirit, which quenched my thirsty soul. Now my life has meaning, purpose with God's Word guiding me. I am now happy with the joy of serving the homeless here at the New Life VCHC and sharing with others my testimony of how the Lord Jesus saved a miserable wretch like me! As a U.S. Marine veteran, I honorably served our country. But make no mistake, I take even more honor now in serving in the army of the Living Lord! To God be the Glory! Forever and ever. Ricky
The work of God continues in Marshfield, MO at the New Life Evangelistic Center Free Store and KMRF Radio and NLEC TV Channel 14.1 Training Center. At this location the previously homeless are finding a new life through Christ as they discover their purpose while serving others.
At the NLEC Marshfield free store and media center, previous homeless men are serving the Marshfield and Webster County area. They collected toys and coats and gave them to those in need. KMRF radio 1510 AM continues to broadcast wholesome family music and inspirational programs. NLEC TV 14.1 provides an alternative to the sex and violence by having wholesome Christian programming as it gives a voice to the homeless and hurting.
I came to New Life in December 2023 because I was about to lose my place due to alcohol and drugs, I was not serving Jesus. That’s why I was doing the alcohol and the drugs. I felt as though the Lord was giving me one final chance and that New Life Evangelistic Center was that chance, so I took it. Now I have peace with God and he has restored my relationship with him, I am currently part of at the Marshfield miracle, helping all who come in.

I was living in Branson when I learned about the Veterans Coming Home Center in Springfield. I was able to stay for the day, eat, and look for work on the computer. I didn’t find any work but learned about the Residential Leadership Training Program in New Bloomfield. I stayed in it for a year and then moved back to Springfield where I got into another program, found an apartment and then it burned down, so I again
was on the street. I got back intothe NLEC Residential leadership training program where I’m doing a lot to help others. I worked in New Bloomfield for a while with the Charolais cattle, then went to St Louis where I assisted Rev. Ray Redlich on the streets taking food and supplies to homeless people. Now I live and work at NLEC Marshfield where I’ve been helping to organize the free store and also assist the efforts in Springfield MO on nights when the weather is really cold. All in all I’m growing in the Lord and serving Him with my life.

Through a series of bad choices, I found myself homeless and living on the streets of Saint Louis. I had never felt so depressed, so abandoned and so lonely. I would pray to God to please save me from my misery and agony. The answer to my prayers came through the New Life Search and Rescue Team. They invited me to restart my life by entering the New Life Residential Program. I am now serving at the New Life Veterans Coming Home Center in Springfield, My life has changed for the better! When Jesus was crucified on the cross, He died for all our sins, freeing us from the prison of the devil and selfishness. My life is full of purpose as I serve a greater cause than myself. I never want to go back to my old way of life. I am now closer to Jesus than ever before and love Jesus more every day! John

I have many health problems, including lupus. These diseases have devasted my life. Although it is difficult for me to work, I am looking for a job. Easter is when Jesus rose from the dead and saved our souls! Easter gives us the hope that there is nothing God can’t conquer. I love my backpack and other direct help I get from those who let the love of Jesus flow through them. I had been praying for a backpack, and God heard my prayers, and He answered them through those who support New Life Veteran's Coming Home Center.

Hundreds of the homeless have nowhere to go except for the New Life VCHC. “I don’t know where I would be or go without the New Life VCHC. It is a place that provides a warm building with hot meals.”
I got divorced and became homeless. I get food, shelter, and clothing from the New Life VCHC. I am 69 years old. It is hard to find a place when you’re on a fixed income. Jesus’ resurrection is important because that was when He conquered death and the devil. Please keep my family and myself in your prayers.
Alan
The hungry and homeless are fed daily.
“After I saw the over 300 homeless persons in need on TV, I could not sit at home in my warm house and not do what Christ has commanded us; take care of the “least of these.”
I was diagnosed with HIV. When I told my familiy, they wanted nothing to do with me. I got so depressed. I just wanted to die. I gave up on life, but I am thankful I found Christ. I know that because of the resurrection, there is nothing He can not do. Because of His love the New Life VCHC provides me with food, water, clothing, showers, and bathrooms. I am now grateful for everything in my life. I know Jesus loves me.
Jay
I became homeless when my apartment was condemned. I have been trying to find housing, but I can’t afford the high rent. I come regularly to the NLEC Veteran's Coming Home Center where I learn how Jesus died on the cross and rose from the dead. I know my Savior lives and will rescue me!
Julie
I got stranded in Springfield when the Greyhound bus just left me. I have only been homeless for only 1 week. And it has been very difficult. I love my new backpack I received from the Veteran's Coming Home Center. It will help me to keep track of my things. Easter is important because it reminds me that God can do all things but fail. Please pray I can return home to Colorado.
Rachel
I got out of prison and could not find a job. No one would hire me. I am forced to live outside in a tent. It is hard to keep warm. I appreciate the New Life VCHC for providing me funds to buy propane to keep my dog, Baby Girl, and me warm. Thank you!

The women’s safe house and residential leadership training program in Saint Louis County offers homeless women the opportunities of learning job skills in on-the-job training program. Women are encouraged to build a resume for future employment. They develop a mindset of responsibility and taking ownership, which is helpful for future housing and employment. These previous homeless women also learn conflict resolution as they become part of the NLEC. This teaches the women how to building a support system for their future. They are encouraged to cook and eat healthy foods and to honor God with their bodies. Bible studies are at the forefront of every workday. The residential training program seeks to encourage the women as they grow in Christ and help others who are in need.

Before I came to NLEC I had lost my mom almost 6 years ago. My mom was my biggest supporter, then I became homeless which made me feel lost and worthless. I had no purpose in life, I was the person to help family and friends and sometimes put other needs before my own, through the struggle I knew Christ but sometimes questioned if He was real and how powerful He was. There were some struggles. I knew God was real because I should have died, but Jesus spared me.
Being spared, I was able to have two beautiful children and grandkids, so I am truly thankful for that. Even though I grew up in a church environment, some things I never understood, or knew. So being at NLEC give me the opportunity to learn and love Christ more. This has helped me overcome my struggles and to build my strength with God. I feel this transition through NLEC is the best decision I have made in a long time. Marsha
I am 23 years old. I came here on December 20th to the New Life Evangelistic Center for help. This followed a year long struggle to stay stable after the passing of my fiance who was the father of my child. He was gunned down at the Cinco Dey Mayo festival on Cherokee St. located on the south side of Saint Louis. After that happened, I went into a major depression and had difficulties managing on my own. I had been with him since I was 16 and we made a beautiful girl when I was 18. He was all I knew. Before he was killed he took responsibility for me and our child. I was studying to be a CNA at Barnes Jewish and being a stayat-home mom until our child started grade school. With his death our plans were cut short, and it seemed as though every plan I made thereafter was in vain. I did end up going down a dark path for about two months, but it did not sit right in my spirit.
I didn't have the best introduction into Christianity, but I always felt a closeness with Jesus as an individual. Once I gave up what felt like an endless fight against myself, and God, after having my car stolen. I surrendered and turned my back on my foolish ways, and redirected myself to Christ. Then I called the New Life Evangelistic Center, and they took me in with open arms. They gave me clothes, a room of my own and made me feel at home.
I am the youngest female here and I don't even feel the age gap because the women are very loving, compassionate and have very warm personalities. We have an open line of communication that is beyond us. We are following Christ and no matter how much we are tempted to be of the world we all have a mission here that is rooted in the passion of serving Jesus Christ.
I am passionate about spreading the word of God and so I've been learning and becoming part of the development of the New Life Evangelistic website and other projects that I've found a passion for. This is also an amazing opportunity educationally speaking. I'm learning skills that I've never had before. I'd like to give thanks to God and Reverend Rice for making this possible. For once in my life, I feel a part of an actual community in Christ and I'm eager to see what lies ahead.
Destiny
I was homeless, lost and so much more. Praise be to God , He has lifted me out of the many dark holes that I was in.
Very much like the poem, Footprints in the Sand, I often only saw one set of footprints and I would ask Jesus, why is there not two footprints and He would tell me, ‘That is when I carried you’.
I’m so thankful for that, God has brought me this far in my life’s journey. He is my Shepherd, and I am one of His sheep. I am so blessed for being here at New Life Evangelistic Center instead of wandering the streets. He is my Heavenly Father, my Protector, my Healer, my Strength. Wherever He leads me I will follow Him.

“A new commandment I give unto you, that ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another” (John 13:34-35).
Christians need to love God and others more… the following points describe the kind of love we need:
“A new commandment I give to you, that ye love one another” (John 13:34). Many Christians profess to love God and others but fail to share their time, talent, and treasure. Some Christians are tight-fisted with God. They do not pay a tenth (tithe) of their earnings. They fail to give liberal offerings too.
To love God and others, we must share. Be ready to give a smile or a kind word, do something to help the needy, and share your testimony. Scripture admonishes, “If a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food [and] … ye give them not those things which are needful to the body, what doth it profit?” (James 2:15-16).
“… as I have loved you, that ye also love one another” (John 13:34). Humanity sinned and deserved to die, but Christ loved us so much he took our place. He died on the cross for us. The Bible says, “Because he laid down his life for us, we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren” (I John 3:16). Sacrifice according to Webster is “a destruction or surrender of something for the sake of something else. Scripture admonishes, “…let us…love…in deed and in truth (I John 3:18).
“By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another” (John 13:35). Christians love for God and others speaks louder than words. It shows when it is present and also, when it is lacking. Scripture says, “Let your light shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven” (Matthew 5:16). A Christian’s light shines through their love for God and others. Love is attractive and needful. Love is a psychological and spiritual need. Everyone needs to love and be loved. God’s love cannot be hidden. It reaches outward to bless others and glorify him.
After receiving the Power of the Resurrection let the Holy Spirit work through you to share the good news with your acts of compassion.

My husband Michael Speaks who was the supervisor of the NLEC residential training program in New Bloomfield, died from Covid in 2022.
It was very hard losing him, especially for Benjamin our son. I thank God for how New Life Evangelistic Center helped us continue in our faith. It was hard for me having to take on the role of both parents, but I thank Jesus for all Michael instilled in Benjamin, who is now in college. Sometimes it comes back to me, all of the memories of all the things Mike had shared with Benjamin when it comes to making positive decisions. A huge weight lifted off my shoulders when Benjamin decided to go forward and make smart choices. I have continued to work at NLEC in the office at the front desk at New Life. I see that I am appreciated and valued in the ministry. My desire is to continue to serve my Lord. God has blessed me, and I’ve learned so much as I get words of encouragement and help from the men here in New Bloomfield. They give me respect and help. Now I am also learning radio through the Here's Help Network. I thank Jesus for the power of His name and His love shown to my son and myself by the Lord. I look forward to seeing all the beautiful things that will come as we continue to trust in Him completely. For I know God is faithful.
I became homeless in 2020. I was bouncing from one place to another. My wife and kids were doing a lot of wrong things intensifying our situation and making things worse. Finally, the family broke up. I left Park Hill the day before Thanksgiving and came to St. Louis. It wasn’t looking like I made a good decision. It was freezing that Wednesday night. I thought, “At least in Park Hills I had a tent and things.” Thanksgiving morning I was frozen. I flagged down a cab and it brought me to NLEC on Locust. There was a crowd of homeless people. Rev. Rice, Rev. Ray and others were giving out clothes, blankets, and Thanksgiving Dinner. I felt so saved and blessed and comfortable there. I had met Rev. Rice in 2000-2001 at a free store at an old church on House St. in Park Hills. I had gone there because I wanted to meet him. When I met him, I asked him to pray for me, and he did. God led me here to NLEC, and Rev. Rice asked me if I would like to come to the New Life Residential Training Program in New Bloomfield. I said, “Yes!” so God brought me to the New Bloomfield where I am now part of a Christian Community drawing closer to Jesus every day.”

With the days going by, and not a cloud in the sky. I can’t help but wonder, when will I finally die? As I sit around, trying to make it through each new day. Wondering when the good Lord will take me away. For my loyalty has been tested but my heart has stayed true. He came into my life and all at once I became new. With no more crimes to commit and no more hate in my heart. Where else could I have gotten a clear fresh start? I’ve lived my life freely ever since I was born but my life needed change before I could ever leave this earth. So that I may find peace with my family and friends before me and praise the Lord my Savior and forever celebrate His glory.

Easter for most incarcerated here can be such a debilitating experience. Devoid and deprived of the most important people in an offender’s life, like family and friends, traditional dinners and the overall camaraderie with loved ones. We typically glorify and exalt with making jailhouse meals and watching Easter day sports specials. A lot of prisoners come from humble beginnings or otherwise impoverished communities. Some have a natural inclination to be innovative. Knowing how to make the best out of a confined situation brings a sense of fulfilment, while generating stress relief and providing enjoyment. My trust and faith in God have never wavered from the inception if my incarceration, I accept the Lord Jesus Christ as my Lord and savior at an early age, so it’s pretty much ingrained in my soul to have a firm adherence despite my cramped conditions. Allowing the gift of Jesus to come into my life and accepting Him as my Savior ensures that I face the various struggles, obstacles and temptations with an unlimited faith. Christ who is before time, Christ, who is the true Lord is the best in reward and the best in outcome.

According to the Death Penalty Information Center, “Darrell Mease was convicted and sentenced to death for the murder of his former drug partner, Lloyd Lawrence, Lawrence’s wife, and Lawrence’s grandson. He was scheduled for execution in 1999. . .” This is where our story begins. What follows are excerpts from Darrell’s letter to Larry Rice about his case.
Brother Larry,
The first words you said to me: "You are saying some radical things", as you grinned really big. I said, "I am just saying what Jesus said, this was not long after the powers and principalities
The Cry Justice Newspaper is now at the NEW Cry Justice page on the NLEC website failed to execute myself. They found out what I had been telling them for years, "You people can't kill me, God is my lawyer!” This was shortly before they executed James Rodden, when you came to talk to him at Potosi.
I was apprehended, arrested by Christ Jesus that I may lay hold of that for which Christ Jesus has also laid hold of me.
The cop asked my name. I gave him a phony name. He ran it, nothing came back. He asked for my social security number. In that instant my real SSN and the false SSN I had been hiding under popped into the air at eye-level between the cop and me. The real number was more prominent than the phony one. I read my real number, I could not stop, and I could not alter it. The numbers were then gone-and so was I. I was hung by my own tongue -Psalms 64:8. The cop ran the number and then said "Darrell, put your hands on top of the car" and with that it was off to tour death row and prison with Jesus, a former death row prisoner himself, as my guide. Many interesting things have happened since then.
After I was apprehended, without incident, as they say, I found myself in Psalms 51:1-17 position. I began seeking God with tears and all of my heart. All I wanted was to get right with God. Seven days after the arrest a stranger came to the Taney County Jail and told me God told him, "Go talk to Darrell". He said, " just remember, you have the best lawyer in the world… God!". Of course I could not entertain the thought of that…, but I knew Roscoe Keithley was sent by God and I quit worrying that I had turned my back on God to long and he would not take me back. Two days later I got right with God in a maximum-security jail cell. It was great!
A few days after I got back with God, "God is my lawyer!" started streaming in my soul, all on my mind. It was on a loop 4 or 5 times per sequence a few times a day for a few days and then of a sudden, WHAM! I knew God is my lawyer on my criminal case. So, I began blazing the matter abroad.
Then God sent a reporter from the news leader of Springfield to get my testimony, the next day, February 12, 1989, the lead story on the front page was " MAN IN MURDER CASE SAYS GOD IS MY LAWYER."
The Supreme Justice sent me a "Darrell Mease shall suffer death on January 27, 1999" letter in November of 1998. Therefore, I wrote the 10-page letter of which I sent you a copy. This letter set the record straight by declaring the supreme court, nor any other power, did not have enough power to execute this believer. I am not bragging except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ.

When the disciple whom Jesus loved went about to writing his gospel, he did it in a personal way. He shared many snapshots as a first-hand witness of Jesus’ miracles and what he did that brought about change in those who had faith and were witnesses. Today people want to know if the resurrection really changed anything. Hasn’t the world gone about the same way since Jesus lived? They say, “Jesus may have risen from the dead, but so what? What’s the significance of a resuscitated corpse?” But this is a big misunderstanding. Jesus body was changed to a glorified body, and we’re told in the Bible that as he is, so we shall be. Jesus as the second person of the Trinity, is alive and well and is King of all Kings and Lord of Lords. But what does this mean for us?
When we look at John 21, we see Jesus interacting with his disciples after the resurrection. In effect Peter, not knowing what else to do, decided to go fishing, and seven disciples in total went out in the boats early in the morning. No doubt they were asking themselves whether following Jesus had accomplished anything, and what were they to do now? Then a voice cried out to them from the shore. It was Jesus! And everything changed. By his presence he was confirming all that he had shown and taught them. They no doubt remembered the times he had fed multitudes with bread and fish as they watched his hands making breakfast. No doubt they remembered their last supper together as he prayed over and blessed the food and gave it to them.
And then after breakfast Jesus spoke personally to Peter. He asked him again and again whether Peter loved him. And with every “Yes” Jesus gave Peter work to do. “Feed my lambs. Tend my sheep. Feed my sheep.” In this way Jesus reinstates Peter by letting him demonstrate his love for Jesus after Peter’s denial of him three times. Words are important, but they are never enough. We have to back up what we say we believe by doing what Jesus says. And it is this obedience to Jesus, practiced by his disciples that turned the world upside down. There’s an entire book of the Bible dedicated to their obedience called, “The Acts of the Apostles”. They went about doing what they had seen Jesus doing. Peter obeyed Jesus words to feed his sheep.
We live in a world where people expect change to come with the toppling of governments, they expect social changes to happen the same way the Beatles toppled the charts in America, and it will all be simulcast on our TVs and cellphones. But when we look at the Bible, we see God acting differently in history, coming in under the radar, working behind the scenes, one person at a time. They begin as simply as a handful of people recognizing a need, maybe that someone needs food or shelter or clothing, and they remember the words of Jesus to Peter. “Feed them.” This is how hospitals and orphanages throughout history got started. There was a need and God’s people stood up to put their backs into it. They didn’t expect someone else to do it. They didn’t wish it in to being or sing it into place by saying “Jesus, I love you.” They took the words of Jesus seriously and knew he would make a way for them to obey him.

Those who experience the reality of the resurrection change direction like the women when they heard the epic news as explained in Matthew 28:5-8. “The angel said to the women, ‘Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay. Then go quickly and tell his disciples: He has risen from the dead and is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him. ‘Now I have told you.’ So, the women hurried away from the tomb, afraid yet filled with joy, and ran to tell his disciples.”
The resurrection of Jesus Christ brought about a radical change for these women, and it will bring about one for you also. The women came to the tomb to mourn. They came knowing only mourning, grief and uncertainty. When they heard the angel’s proclamation, “He is not here; for He is risen” and saw the evidence of the empty tomb, they changed their direction. They obeyed when the angel said, “Go quickly, and tell His disciples.”
The Bible tells us they left the grave, “quickly with fear and great joy.” What a great change of direction. After seeing the grave is empty of death, they now run with joy to share the message of the resurrection. As they run in a new direction, they encounter Jesus. Matthew 28:9 tells us, “Suddenly Jesus met them. ‘Greetings,’ he said. They came to Him clasped His feet and worshiped Him.”
The direction for the women is no longer toward the grave and the hopelessness it brings. Now as the women move in the new direction of life and joy, they encounter the Living Christ. He is the hope of glory. The Risen Christ, who lives, is the hope of glory. The Risen Christ, gives eternal life and victory to all who worship Him.
This victorious power of the resurrection was not with a babe in a manger, or a man nailed to a cross. The power came because of Christ’s victory over death.
Our job is not to worry and weep outside the grave but upon seeing and believing the grave is empty, letting everyone know that there is hope for Christ is Risen.

“I have those days, that I want to give God glory publicly. Since my retirement, one of the most incredible things has been getting closer to God and incorporating Jesus Christ into my everyday life. I professed Christ when I worked at Fox 2. I can do so now with even greater conviction and boldness. When I retired, God let me know that the second half of my life, which was after retirement, was going to be greater than the first half. It was hard for me to believe that anything could be more significant than television, helping people through YOU Paid For It, and working with excellent management and coworkers. I couldn’t imagine what would come after retirement.
After five months of retirement, I am living my best life in Christ, and God gets more meaningful for me every day. I learn something a little bit different every day, and each day, I grow in my faith just a little bit more.
I believe that makes me more valuable to people who need help to those who are struggling and people who are hurting and in pain.
I have people often telling me to enjoy my retirement. I tell them I’m enjoying it every day! I’m getting to help people and stand up more for people experiencing homelessness and be bolder and speak out more about what I perceive as waste and injustice hurting the taxpayer.
I did not look forward to retirement so I could buy a brandnew Corvette to drive around in. I did not look forward to retirement so I could take a trip around the world, purchase new jewelry, or take up some expensive hobby like boating or anything else. That’s not what floated my boat.
What makes me feel best is what God has given me the mission to do, and that’s help others. That is what makes my life unique. That is what I believe, pleases God, that is what I’m going to do. So, I can truthfully say that the second half of my life is even more fulfilling than the first because of the glory of God and His blessings in my life.”

In September 1986, Larry Rice (LR) interviewed Jimmy Carter (JC) in Kansas City, Missouri. An excerpt of that interview includes the following.
LR: We are seeing an increase in the number of homeless in St. Louis, Jefferson City and Kansas City and at the same time we are seeing reports that unemployment is going down, why do you feel we are seeing an increase in homelessness?
JC: I read an article by a journalist in Atlanta that said the number of homeless people has increased in the last five years. 6,000 in Atlanta and 50,000 in New York. There is a big difference between those who are well off on the one hand and those of us who are poor on the other hand. We often don’t even know those people who have to sleep on the streets.
LR: Many are calling for a cutback in the welfare state and the church should do more. Do you feel the church should do more?
JC: In this place in our country, we have three different sources of housing 1. The private sector, 2. Government housing, 3. Non-profit sector of which Habitat for Humanity is a part of.
LR: Are there things you think local churches could be doing like opening their churches to the homeless?
JC: To be blunt about it, most churches don’t do anything. It is really a shame that most church members, including myself for most of my life, just go to church on Sunday mornings or Easter Sunday and the rest of the year never really do anything for those who are in need. Christ devoted his life to helping those who were outcasts, hungry and homeless. Most church members don’t really think about doing anything practical. Maybe once a year, Thanksgiving there will be a special collection in a men’s Bible class and then they wonder who is poor we can help. There’s a big separation between those who are church members and those who are outcasts. For many it is that we take care of our own needs first and if we wear nice clothes, we have done our own Christian duty. I think that kind of attitude is breaking down. It involves getting to know people in need.
I think there can be outreach in any community to get to know those in need. It’s an exciting thing. It’s not a sacrificial thing. You find that what you thought would be a sacrifice becomes a mind broadening experience. They’ve (the needy) given me a new insight on life on what Christianity really is and what my church can be. It’s a wonderful opportunity if we remember what Jesus himself did.
Jimmy Carter was the longest living ex-president in US history. After he lost his pursuit of a second term as President, Jimmy Carter then continued to pursue God’s will for his life.
Ater Jimmy lost his run for president against Ronald Reagan, I interviewed him in Kansas City, Missouri. During that interview he told me how he was going to now serve Christ by building homes for the poor, work for democracy in other countries, and help those in need around the world through the Carter Center.
President Carter knew that if you had a pulse, you had a purpose, and in spite of the negative statements of others he wasn’t going to stop pursuing God’s purpose for his life, when it came to helping other people.
Does your life lack a sense of purpose, meaning and direction? Proverbs 29:18 (KJV) says, “Where there is no vision, the people perish.” You have been positioned like Jimmy Carter for purpose.
In spite of your past disappointments and losses it is absolutely critical that you come to the one who will give you a purpose both now and for all eternity. Jesus said, “Come to me all of you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest” Matthew 11:28 (NIV).
CONTINUED ON PAGE 21...
Without a purpose all of life becomes a ceaseless struggle where we are carrying one heavy burden of stress and sin after another. It is Jesus who has come to set us free (Luke 4:18) and then sends the Holy Spirit who gives us special gifts to fulfill that purpose.
The history of New Life Evangelistic Center is the story of a people desiring to please God, as they sought Him for direction amid community needs. The foundation for developing a vision for fulfilling the purpose that God had given them, was the resurrection power of Jesus Christ.
In the 1970’s during a crisis of homelessness, the Holy Spirit gave the New Life Evangelistic Center Staff a vision for how to provide not only shelter, but a wide variety of programs to help break the cycle of homelessness.
During the 1980’s the Living Lord gave those working at NLEC a vision to help the poor and elderly as they struggled to pay their utility bills. The solutions included the provision of wood furnaces, Dollar Help, and direct energy assistance. Later, renewable energy and energy conservation methods would be added to this. In response to the great heat crisis of 1980, fans and air conditioners were distributed.
A vision for fulfilling the purpose of building Christian Television and Radio Stations was given to the New Life Evangelistic Center Staff. This was in response to the need for wholesome family, community, and inspirational programming.
When 157 people had been murdered in St. Louis by August 26th in the year of 1991, the New Life Evangelistic Center community began to seek God for a vision for a murder free St. Louis. To work toward that goal, a gun buyback program was developed. Teachers were trained to educate their students on how to resolve conflict in a non-violent way. NLEC also encouraged hundreds of believers to pray for the murders to stop. The result was a drop in the murder rate in the City of St. Louis for the rest of that year.
As believers in the risen Christ, we are spark plugs with a purpose, who after seeking God for solutions, give life and energy toward working for solutions to community problems. Those positioned for purpose are catalysts who provide stimulation and motivation as they trust God to get things moving. Their faith is like a spark that ignites action which results in God given solutions. “Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see” Hebrews 11:1 (NIV).
Believers with a sense of purpose know that Christ is, “able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to His power that is at work within us” Ephesians 3:20 (NIV).
Believers who have a pulse are positioned for purpose as they move forward by faith bringing forth the vision the Holy Spirit has placed within them.
If
To do this, they must believe God when He says, “So do not fear, for I am with you, do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand” Isaiah 41:10 (NIV).
If you don’t see the purpose God has given you fulfilled immediately don’t give up. Wait for it. “Then the LORD replied: “Write down the revelation and make it plain on tablets so that a herald may run with it. For the revelation awaits an appointed time; it speaks of the end and will not prove false. Though it lingers, wait for it; it will certainly come and will not delay” Habakkuk 2:2-3 (NIV).
God’s presence is the oxygen His people of purpose breathe. They won’t disregard God’s purpose and plan for their lives when others overlook them and pass them by.
In conclusion, remember the following four steps in order to position yourself for the purpose God has given you:
1. Begin to picture God’s purpose for your life. As you pursue this purpose move forth in faith that the power of Christ which passes all understanding will work in you and through you. By doing this you will be able to “rejoice always, pray continually, giving thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus” 1 Thessalonians 5:16 (NIV).
2. Don’t panic, you still have a pulse which means you can pray when everything seems to be going wrong. Directions for such powerful praying are clearly given in Philippians 4:6, 7 (NKJV). There it tells us to “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
3. To be positioned for purpose, prioritize your time and pace yourself. Learn to guard your time wisely. Satan will constantly speak condemnation so you must remember that there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. Spend time in prayer and Bible reading each day. Then exercise, eat nourishing meals and get plenty of sleep. Protect your time to rest in the Lord and move forth with the strength and anointing He provides.
4. Experience Christ’s peace as you come to Him during life’s struggles. Accept His invitation to come into the divine rest that only He can give at those moments when toxic stress overshadows you. Jesus says, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light” Matthew 11:28-30 (NIV).
We have a pulse and we have no greater purpose than that which Christ gave us in Matthew 28:19-20 (NIV) when He said, “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely, I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
Larry Rice
It was at a time when “homeless” was not an everyday word. No one had heard of “aids”. Utility shut offs were rarely heard of. Yet there were people who were hurting. There were many whose lives were mixed up. They needed the love of Jesus, and they needed someone to show them that love in a tangible way. That is why God called Larry and Penny Rice to found the New Life Evangelistic Center fifty-three years ago.
I met this young minister and his wife in February of 1972. They lived in a fifty-foot rented trailer in Wellston, a suburb of St. Louis, Missouri. From a physical standpoint there wasn’t much to look at – the trailer, a “dial-a-message” recorder, and a few home-made gospel tracts. But the one thing that stuck out with me was the vision God had placed on Larry Rice’s heart. It was a vision of what the Lord was going to do through this ministry in the years to come.
As Larry opened his heart to a small group of college students (of whom I was one), I could sense that his calling was truly of God. I never imagined, however, that I would someday be a part of this vision.
Larry talked about living “by faith” without a salary and trusting the Lord for every need. He spoke of the importance of ministering to the total person, body, mind and spirit. He related how an interdenominational ministry could break barriers and reach all kinds of people for Christ. If I recall correctly, Larry even mentioned the potential of Christian broadcasting to reach hurting people, long before channel 24 and channel 25 were even dim possibilities.
Larry related these ideas with humility. Here was a man who simply wanted to follow Jesus day by day, with no grandiose scheme, but just a willingness to go all the way with the Lord. I was impressed that this was a ministry conceived by God and blessed with His favor.
The one point that I remember most clearly was Larry’s statement of the “Purpose of New Life Evangelistic Center.” It was “to serve as a bridge” between the person on the street and the person in the church pew. At that time, I could not understand fully what this “bridge” concept meant, but as I watched New Life Evangelistic Center grow and expand in its outreach over the years, I have come to understand and appreciate that purpose.
I have seen volunteers come to our Center, not knowing any poor or homeless people, yet having a compelling desire to help. New Life Evangelistic Center has enabled them to meet people in need and find their own lives enriched as they became involved in the lives of others. Whether it was a winter patrol team member visiting homeless men on the riverfront, or a Christmas dinner hostess sharing the joys of Christ’s birth with a low-income family, maybe a telephone counselor ministering to a frustrated teenager, each have discovered a new dimension to their Christian life. A dimension that they may never have had the opportunity to fully realize in their church setting.
These are the things that serving as a bridge have become to me. This bridge is the way New Life Evangelistic Center is fulfilling its mission. Never viewing himself in competition with local congregations, Larry Rice has always encouraged people to attend the church of their choice, to receive further spiritual nurturing. He has even gone one step further however, by challenging the Christian, young and old, to move out beyond the four walls of their house of worship and become more involved with the needs of their community.
The New Life Evangelistic Center equips not only individuals but even whole churches and other organizations for greater service. Larry Rice has held numerous conferences to teach church leaders how to operate a shelter, how to start a soup kitchen, and other ways to become directly involved with the needy around them. New Life Evangelistic Center has shared thousands of dollars' worth of blankets, cots, financial grants for housing, and food stuffs with other groups, so that they could carry on the work in their areas. This is all done in the spirit of serving as that bridge, the same spirit in which New Life Evangelistic Center was first founded.
Now that I have been with the ministry full time for over fifty years, I thank God that we have not deviated from that central purpose. As the Lord opens new opportunities in meeting human needs, training the homeless, broadcasting and sharing the Good News in an ever-widening sphere of activities, I am confident that New Life Evangelistic Center will continue to serve as a bridge.

The resurrection of Jesus Christ was more than just a historical event to be celebrated once a year with lilies and lavender. Rather, it was the beginning of a whole new meaning for the word empowerment.
The word of God tells us that those who embrace the Lordship of the Risen Christ have an unfathomable source of power dwelling inside them.
Those who have cast aside the deadness and futility of their lives apart from God, in exchange for a resurrection to a new life in Christ, can discover what might be called, "The Ephesians Formula for Empowerment:"
1) "And so that you can know and understand what is the immeasurable and unlimited and surpassing greatness of His power in and for us who believe, as demonstrated in the working of His mighty strength, which He exerted in Christ when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His own right hand in the heavenly places." (Ephesians 1: 19-20)
2)"Even when we were dead [slain] by [our own| shortcomings and trespasses, He made us alive together in fellowship and in union with Christ. [He gave us the very life of Christ Himself, the same new life with which He quickened Him.] For it is by grace that you are saved." (Ephesians 2:5)
3)"May He grant you out of the rich treasury of His glory to be strengthened and reinforced with mighty power in the inner man by the [Holy] Spirit [Himself indwelling your innermost being and personality]." (Ephesians 3:16)
"In conclusion, be strong in the Lord [be empowered through your union with Him; draw your strength from Him] that strength which His (boundless] might provide." (Ephesians 6:10)
Just as God took the broken, lifeless body of Jesus and with awesome power raised Him to life again, He can take the broken, shattered pieces of your life...and the lives of those you love... and transform them into radiant, fully alive reflections of His love to a hurting world.
In Him is our true source of empowerment!

The people of God are arising and speaking out in word and deed that there is hope Christ is Risen.
The New Life Evangelistic Center is a haven of hope for the hopeless and homeless. Because of its faithful partners, new Life is able to share the hope provided through the Risen Christ around the clock. This is done through direct help centers, homeless outreach search and rescue teams, residential training programs, and social media sites. You can be a part of the mighty work the Holy Spirit is doing at New Life Evangelistic Center by sending your tax deductible gifts to NLEC, PO BOX 473, St. Louis, MO 63166.
Julie is just one of the individuals who are now part of the haven of hope NLEC provides.
“I have discovered a new hope within myself. When I first came to New Life Evangelistic Center, I was initially searching for a place to stay. I was homeless with nowhere to go and felt lost. After moving into a safe house and becoming part of this community, I now have the opportunity to serve Jesus Christ on a daily basis. My new purpose is to share the Good News of God and His Resurrected Son through Bible study, prayer, outreach and living in hope. Read more on pages 7 and 8 about the hope the NLEC safe houses are providing. Julie
Deborah testifies how she has found hope through Christ's love flowing through NLEC.
“I found myself sleeping in the doorway of the church near my grandmother’s house because I had nowhere else to go to lay my head. I would sleep with one eye open because there was a huge raccoon that seemed to want to get close to me! I tried to get into shelters, but found I had a very difficult time because everyone was FULL! There were no beds available to me. Finally, I was able to find the rest and freedom from homelessness that I needed through the New Life Evangelistic Center Residential Leadership Program. I have grown closer to my Savior, Jesus Christ, and found peace from my troubles here at New Life Evangelistic Center.”
