Selwyn’s homework information for parents September 2023


Nursery - No homework, just enjoying a good read! Your child will be sent home with a picture book on a Friday. This is for you to share with your child if you are able to at home. If you would like advice about how to support your child with reading at home, please do not hesitate to speak to your child’s class teacher who will be more than happy to provide guidance. Reading books are given to children on a Friday and returned to school on a Wednesday. The additional book is for you to use to make comments about your child’s reading if you would like to.


Homework Expectations - Reception Every week they will receive: - Spellings to learn for a test on a Friday On alternating weeks they will receive either: -

a piece of maths work and handwriting practice or a phonics activity

Homework is given to children on a Friday and is returned to school on a Wednesday. Spellings are shared on a Monday.


Homework expectations - Years 1 - 5 Every week they will receive: - 1 page of Maths practice questions - 1 page of English practice questions - Spellings to learn for a test on a Friday Children must only complete the task set by the class teacher each week.

Maths & English are given to children on a Friday and returned to school on a Wednesday. Spellings are shared on a Monday.


Homework expectations - Year 6 Each week they will receive: -

1 x 10 minute Maths weekly workout 1 x 10 minute Reading weekly workout 1 x 10 minute Grammar weekly workout Spellings to learn for a test on a Friday

All of the tasks set will support children to prepare for their Y6 SATs and the transition to secondary school. Children must only complete the task set by the teacher for that week Homework is given to children on a Friday and is returned to school on a Wednesday. Spellings are shared on a Monday.


Homework expectations - Learning Support Provision Children in ;adybird, Bumblebee & Butterfly classes will bring their purple homework books home each week. Their class teachers will set them tasks to complete independently or with an adult. Homework is given to children on a Friday and is returned to school on a Wednesday.

A phonics phase book each week A library book that your child has chosen to enjoy with you

Years three, four, five and six -

A library book that they have chosen themselves Some children may be allocated an additional reading book to develop their reading fluency

Children in KS2 should have their reading book in school every day.

Phonics books

Children should read to an adult at least twice a week. Reading records will be checked every week. Reception - Y2: On the day that their phonics book is changed Y3 - Y6: On a Wednesday

There is a slip inside your child’s reading record telling you which day their phonics book will be changed.


Your child’s reading record will look like this.

When you listen to your child read, please write the title of the book and your signature/comment.
