CO-CURRICULUM

SENIOR DIVISIONS

MichaelmasTerm 2025

We are excited to offer a rich and varied co-curricular programme, giving our students access to outstanding provision and breadth of opportunity across Sport, the Arts, Dance, Drama and Music, and an exciting range of clubs, activities and academic societies. Our programme gives students the opportunity to extend their skills, strengthen their personal qualities and enrich their personal development. Whether it’s STEM Club or DofE, Orchestra or Debating, it is through our extensive co-curricular programme that our young people build their confidence, strengthen their mental agility, and develop creativity, resilience, adaptability and so many of the skills which will serve them both now and in the next stage of their lives. It is here that many of our students find their voice and inspiration, and where interests can develop into passions. With a number of recent new additions to our co-curricular offering, we continue to listen to our students when enriching the programme. This ensures that our programme is organic and grows with the needs and interests of our Student body.

As we start the Michaelmas term, students discuss their co-curricular choices with their tutor. Most students from Year 7-10 and Year 12 are expected to take up one lunchtime activity on at least three days per week, and any number after school, but those taking public examinations this year, or intensive training programmes are given a degree of flexibility, at the recommendation of their tutor.

Lunchtime begins at 12.55pm, and students can take up any of these options: a 55-minute Long Lunch Activity, 1.20pm - 2.15pm, eating lunch beforehand, from 12.55pm, a 35-minute First Lunch Activity, 1.05pm - 1.40pm, eating lunch from 1.40pm, or a 35-minute Second Lunch Activity, 1.40pm - 2.15pm, eating lunch beforehand, from 1.10pm.

On a day of the week where a student is not taking up a lunchtime activity, lunch is available from 1.20pm. Afternoon lessons run from 2.20pm until 4.15pm. After School co-curricular provision begins at 4.30pm, typically finishing at 5.30pm before the late buses depart. We offer a wonderful range of evening and weekend activities for our boarders including creative activities, sport, gym, performing arts and very much more. If you would like to find out about becoming a flexi, weekly or full boarder to maximise on teh evening co-curricular opportunities then please be in touch with one of our Heads of Boarding (contact details later in this booklet).

Students sign up for the Co-curricular Programme via SOCS (guidance at the end of this booklet). Activities which have the * sign incur an additional charge. Students are expected to commit to their chosen activities for the entire term, and when a student is unable to attend a particular session, they are expected to notify the club leader in advance. The name/s by each co-curricular activity is the prefix fo the individual teacher’s email address so that you can contact the activity or club leader by emailing the relevant name followed by ‘@newhallschool.co.uk’, e.g. v.holden@newhallschool.co.uk.

Students may also attend After-School Study sessions and can select this as an option. We offer a range of one-off events on Wednesdays at lunchtime, such as ‘Corporate Conversations’, House Activities or a one-off rehearsal, publicised to students during term. Students are not required to sign up for these as part of their three lunchtime clubs, but for those who already have an activity on a Wednesday at that time, they must contact their activity leader to obtain permission to attend any one-off activity as required. We hope you enjoy the term ahead and make the most of the many opportunities on offer.

Instructions to help students sign up for co-curricular activities

Students are asked to select their co-curricular choices by 8.00pm on Sunday 27 April 2025

Please enter www.socscms.com to your internet browser to access the login page:

Please login using your school student email e.g. James.Bloggs@newhallstudent. co.uk and password ‘newhall99’. If you have changed / forgotten your password, please click the ‘I cannot access my SOCS account’ link on the login page to reset your password. Once logged in, you should see your personal account homepage:

Please change your password to something memorable yet secure using the ‘Settings’ tab on the menu.

To select your co-curricular activities for this term, please click on the ‘Activities’ link on the menu and you should see a screen similar to that in the image below.

Please click on each day in turn to see the activities that are available to you.

Please click the ‘Add’ button if you wish to participate in that activity and it will accordingly change to a green tick. If you change your mind or add yourself to an activity by mistake, please click the green tick as required.

Guidance

Students are encouraged to select a broad and balanced selection of co-curricular activities. Most students in Year 7, 8, 9, 10 and 12 are expected to take up one activity per lunchtime, on at least three days of the week. Students taking public examinations this year, or intensive training programmes such as swimming, dance, drama, music, skiing, golf and others, are similarly encouraged to consider carefully how many co-curricular activities they join so that they can find a suitable balance across their various commitments. So that students have sufficient time for lunch, please note that it is not possible for students from Year 7 to 11 to take up more than one activity per lunchtime.

Notes:

If an activity is full or by invitation only, please note that the ‘Add’ button will not be available. Please speak with the member of staff in charge of the activity (the staff name will appear on SOCS) to find out if it is possible for you to be added.

Please do not add yourself to more than one activity per session (with the exception of after school activities, where a second activity is available in some cases).

Once you have completed your choices, please select the ‘My Calendar’ option on the left hand menu and you should see your weekly activity programme displayed.

How to synchronise your child’s co-curricular calendar to your own calendars

You can iCal sync to your child's clubs and fixtures. You can also sync your SOCS calendar to your personal calendar (e.g. Google or Outlook) which will provide you with a live feed of clubs and fixtures. Any changes made to a club or fixture will then update your personal calendar.

To do this, please:

• Log Into SOCS

• Click on the "Calendar Sync" button

• Click on the WebCal link that is automatically created by SOCS

• Follow the on screen instructions

This creates a live feed of clubs and fixtures in your personal calendar.
