CONNECTING POINT HOSTED NEAL-MORSE DEBATE U.S. Rep. Richard E. Neal, and his challenger in the Sept. 1 Democratic primary, Holyoke Mayor Alex B. Morse, met at the NEPM TV studios for a debate organized by a consortium of media organizations, including New England Public Media, The Republican and MassLive, and The Berkshire Eagle in Pittsfield, on Monday, Aug. 17. The hour-long debate, moderated by Ray Hershel of NEPM’s Connecting Point, was broadcast on Monday, Aug. 17 on NEPM TV and NEPM 88.5, and made available online at nepm.org. It garnered both statewide and national media attention.

NEPM’S NEWSROOM BROUGHT CLARITY TO BALLOT QUESTIONS In 2020, Massachusetts voters had two statewide ballot questions in front of them. Question 1 centered around how much vehicle diagnostic and repair information is available to independent repair shops and vehicle owners. With Question 2, voters were asked to weigh in on ranked-choice voting.

CONNECTING POINT MET UP WITH FIRST-TIME VOTERS After enthusiastic voter turnout in the 2018 midterms, Americans were expected to cast more ballots in 2020 than in any presidential election in over a century. A study from Pew Research Center found that Gen Z’ers, born after 1996, would represent one in ten eligible voters in 2020. And, for the first time, people born after 9/11 would help choose the next president.

In the digital-exclusive series “Generation Vote,” Connecting Point engaged first-time voters and discovered that young adults had a lot to say about democracy.

ELECTION DAY CHALLENGES AND HOPES Well over 3 million Massachusetts voters cast ballots in the 2020 election. The NEPM newsroom had reporters out at the polls in several western Massachusetts towns and cities. In addition to asking voters who they supported and why, we also asked about the biggest challenges facing their communities and the country, as well as their hopes for the future.

NPR EXPERTS TALKED ABOUT “WHAT’S NEXT?” On Nov. 17, this much we knew — Joe Biden was president-elect and Kamala Harris made history as the first woman and the first person of color to be vice president-elect. We didn’t yet know who would win the remaining undecided seats in the Senate, or how the COVID-19 pandemic affected voter turn-out, or how the transition would play out. New England Public Media and the Springfield Public Forum presented “Election 2020: What’s Next?,” a virtual conversation with NPR Senior Political Correspondent Domenico Montanaro and Weekend All Things Considered host Michel Martin.

NEPM’s Kari Njiiri moderated the discussion.

NEPM NEWSROOM REPORTED ON LOCAL REACTION TO THE JAN. 6 INSURRECTION Hours after the unfolding of the insurrection at the Capitol, the NEPM newsroom published “Among New England’s elected officials, outrage, sadness and calls for Trump’s removal,” with reactions from local citizens and elected officials, including U.S. Rep. Jim McGovern, who presided over the House chamber when it recessed during the lockdown.

CONNECTING POINT VISITED THE INAUGURATION TO EXPLORE A DIVIDED NATION The Inauguration of President Joe Biden happened amid a pandemic and against the backdrop of the violent siege on the U.S. Capitol building a week before. As a result, the swearing in of America’s new commander in chief was unlike any other in history. NEPM guest correspondent, acclaimed photojournalist and Williams College professor Barry Goldstein, was on the ground in the Capitol to capture the mood leading up to and during the inauguration. The result was “Divided: Scenes from Inauguration 2021,” a Connecting Point digital-exclusive series. Through documentary photography, portraiture, and audio interviews, Goldstein conveyed the sense of uncertainty and division surrounding one of the most important traditions in our republic.

NPR’S TAMARA KEITH ANALYZED THE BIDEN ADMINISTRATION’S FIRST HUNDRED DAYS On May 6, New England Public Media and the Springfield Public Forum presented a conversation with NPR White House Correspondent Tamara Keith and Professor Ray La Raja of UMass Amherst about the first 100 days of the Biden presidency. What was promised? What was accomplished and what wasn’t? What would come next for the new administration? The conversation was introduced by Dara Kennedy, host of NEPM’s And Another Thing.

A NEW AUDIO EXPERIENCE And Another Thing, a new audio experience that looks at the important issues of the day from a local perspective debuted on April 26, 2020, on NEPM 88.5.

Every weekday at 6 p.m., hosts Dara Kennedy and Maya Shwayder conduct an engaging 30-minute community discussion with local experts and people from the region, bringing journalistic chops, a passion for real conversation, and a dash of levity and humor.

Here are some notable shows from the early days of And Another Thing: ROLE OF MOTHERS - THURSDAY, MAY 6 A celebration of mothers, in all forms. Family therapist Gayanni DeSilva explained the ever changing role of moms (and dads) during the pandemic.

The program also explored surrogacy and the concept of “drag mothers” and “house mothers” in the LGBTQ+ community.

JENNIFER’S LAW – MONDAY, JUNE 7 On Friday, June 4, Connecticut overwhelmingly passed Jennifer’s Law in the House. Known as Senate Bill 1060, the bill expanded the definition of domestic violence. Dara Kennedy and Maya Shwayder talked with Connecticut Senator Alex Kasser, who co-authored the bill.

PFAS CHEMICALS - WEDNESDAY, JUNE 23 Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are chemicals that are just about everywhere. Evidence suggests that PFAS are not only dangerous for your health, but that they are also very hard to get rid of. A new bill in the Massachusetts state senate could be one of the most sweeping bans on PFAS in the nation.

Dara is a broadcast journalist who previously spent over five years working abroad as an anchor, producer, and speaker. Dara has delivered breaking news and top stories for TV networks in America, London, and the Middle East, and has served as a foreign correspondent covering Africa and the Americas. She was the first African American woman to anchor NESN’s nightly flagship show in Boston. She also hosted several broadcasts of NEPM’s Connecting Point.

Maya spent four years in New York City as a local reporter, eventually becoming the UN Correspondent for the Jerusalem Post, before moving to Berlin to serve as an international correspondent and anchor for Deutsche Welle/DW News. Her work has also appeared in The Washington Post, The Atlantic and the Daily Beast, among others. More recently, she worked as a host for WCRB, as well as a writer for Business Insider and The Boston Globe.

CONNECTING POINT GETS A NEW HOST AND A NEW BEAT For over ten years, Connecting Point has been telling the important stories of western New England by going directly into the community, hosting discussions, providing analysis and context, and showcasing the people, places and ideas that matter most to the people of the region. In addition to TV broadcasts, Connecting Point has offered more and more in the way of exclusive digital-only segments.

In January, 2021, correspondent and contributor Zydalis Bauer became host of the show. Zydalis got her first experience with media production at WGBY’s Latino Youth Media Institute as a teen, and never looked back, returning to work at NEPM after earning a communications degree from Westfield State University. Starting in May of 2021, Connecting Point’s focus shifted from news and public affairs to arts, culture, and community.

Here are some of the team’s favorite stories: REMOTE LEARNING: A THREE-PART DIGITAL SERIES In March of 2020, America’s public education system scrambled to move to a remote teaching scenario, due to the skyrocketing numbers of COVID-19. In 2021, although some students were back in the classroom, remote learning continued for many. In a three-part digital-only series, Connecting Point talked with students, parents and educators, visited a “learning pod” in Holyoke, and reported on the difficulties posed by the lack of high-speed internet in some places in the region.

BLUE RIDER STABLES THERAPEUTIC RIDING HELPS KHALI ZABIAN ON ROAD TO RECOVERY For nearly 30 years, Blue Rider Stables in Great Barrington has provided rehabilitation services through therapeutic horseback riding. This summer, Blue Rider received one of their biggest challenges when Khali Zabian arrived for her first lesson. Last year, after being hit by a car, Khali nearly died. But through months of hard work, she took the small steps to one day walk on her own again.

FLAVOURS OF MALAYSIA COOKED UP FOOD, COMMUNITY IN PITTSFIELD A popular eatery in downtown Pittsfield, Flavours of Malaysia closed its doors this past December after 13 years in business. But the restaurant was more than just a place to grab a meal. Co-owners chef Sabrina Tan and her husband Chin Lee have made a huge impact in their community through their hospitality and philanthropic work. While people in Berkshire County may miss Sabrina’s food, it’s the sense of community that she and Chin created that residents say they will miss the most.

“ON THE ROAD IN PITTSFIELD” EPISODE As in-person cultural events started to reopen throughout the region in the spring, Connecting Point went “on the road” to cover the city known as the “Brooklyn of the Berkshires.” The program was there for the return of the Pittsfield Suns to Wahconah Park and live music at the Colonial Theater. The city’s cultural development director Jennifer Glockner talked about Pittsfield’s vibrant arts scene, and children’s author and Bronx native Ty Allan Jackson shared his passion for reading, and explained why he chooses to call Pittsfield home.

NIRVANI WILLIAMS JOINS NEPM’S NEWSROOM AS ‘REPORT FOR AMERICA’ JOURNALIST In December 2020, New England Public Media was selected as a Report for America host newsroom partner and joined an expanding network of more than 200 newsrooms benefiting from the support of a nonprofit program that places talented emerging journalists in local newsrooms to report on under-covered topics and communities. An initiative of The GroundTruth Project, Report for America is structured to harness the skills and idealism of an emerging group of journalists plus the creative spirit of local news organizations — like NEPM. Through this partnership, NEPM was able to expand its Equity Desk, which had recently been created to address profound disparities in the region across a spectrum of socio-economic factors with emphasis on environment, gender, health, income and social equity.

In April 2021, Nirvani Williams was chosen to be NEPM’s Report for America journalist.

Prior to her appointment, Williams was the associate editor of Seema, an online publication dedicated to telling the stories of women in the Indian diaspora. She holds a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Stony Brook University, where she was the executive editor of the student-run magazine, The Stony Brook Press.

Williams arrived ready to report on systemic and institutional inequalities in underserved communities and immediately benefited from mentoring with seasoned NEPM newsroom reporters. Some of her NEPM stories include:

NEPM RADIO SCHEDULE REFRESH The radio content team rolled up their sleeves this year to reevaluate NEPM’s radio schedules and came up with a roster of programs that offers themed listening blocks, retains core favorites, introduces new voices, and highlights programming that reflect the diversity of our community. Here are some highlights:

THE FINE ART OF STORYTELLING, SATURDAYS ON THE NEPM NEWS NETWORK

If you agree that there’s nothing like a good story, you know where to go on Saturdays. Starting with the New Yorker Radio Hour at 11 a.m., and continuing with This American Life at noon, Snap Judgment at 1 p.m., The Moth at 2 p.m. and Selected Shorts at 3 p.m., NEPM provides a chance to hear stories that transport you to new places and introduce you to new points of view.

Snap Judgment was added to the schedule for its raw, musical brand of storytelling that dares listeners to see the world through the eyes of another.

SATURDAY EVENING MUSIC ON NEPM 88.5

With the addition of American Routes at 6 p.m., NEPM offers a vibrant Saturday night music experience that goes all the way until midnight.

Hosted by Nick Spitzer, American Routes presents a broad range of American music — blues and jazz, gospel and soul, old-time country and rockabilly, Cajun and zydeco, Tejano and Latin, roots rock and pop, avant-garde and classical. It’s the perfect “warm-up” show for Jazz Safari, hosted by NEPM’s Kari Njiiri, which is then topped off with Afropop Worldwide.

DISCOVERIES AND INNOVATIONS, SUNDAYS ON THE NEPM NEWS NETWORK

The new Sunday line up on the NEPM News Network gives you access to thought leaders, reporters, and innovators who challenge familiar perceptions about our world. Reveal from the Center for Investigative Reporting, unearths original stories that hold people and institutions accountable for the problems they’ve caused or benefited from. Code Switch presents fearless conversations about race. Life Kit offers tips and guidance on a wide range of topics.

LATINO PROGRAMMING SUNDAY NIGHTS ON NEPM 88.5

The Peabody Award-winning Latino USA, hosted by Maria Hinojosa, is the longest running national Latino news and cultural public radio program. Now at 7 p.m., it provides a perfect lead-in to NEPM’s Tertulia at 8 p.m. hosted by Raquel Obregon. Fiesta, which features artistically significant classical compositions from Latin America, Spain and Portugal was added to the schedule in the 10 p.m. slot.

WORD MATTERS PODCAST ATTRACTS NATIONAL FANBASE Merriam-Webster is a venerable Springfield-based institution. Merriam Webster editor Peter Sokolowski is an NEPM jazz host. While brainstorming ideas for a local podcast, a collaboration was suggested, and Word Matters was born.

It debuted in August of 2020, became an instant success, and went on to rack up over 800 thousand downloads by July 2021. Produced in collaboration with New England Public Media and hosted by Emily Brewster, senior editor and editorial ambassador for Merriam-Webster, Word Matters invites listeners to eavesdrop on conversations Emily and fellow editors Peter Sokolowski and Ammon Shea have about the language’s inner workings.

“When your job consists of writing and editing dictionaries,” explained Emily, “you quickly become aware that the language isn’t remotely static. It’s a constantly shifting thing beholden to strange logic or no logic at all. With each episode of Word Matters, we get to talk through the oddities of English that we’ve encountered in the course of our work, exploring words newly coined or long forgotten, as well as grammatical features and syntactic developments. It’s a window into the usually very solitary work of the lexicographer.”

CONNECTING TO THE COMMUNITY WITH VIRTUAL EVENTS

EL PUERTO RICO On Jan. 23-24, New England Public Media and the Massachusetts International Festival of the Arts Victory Theatre (MIFA) joined force to present El Puerto Rico 3: Identity Duets — a virtual chamber concert event that featured the work of contemporary Puerto Rican composers performed by the Victory Players Contemporary Music Ensemble under the direction of music director Tianhui Ng. The goal of MIFA’s El Puerto Rico is to acquaint audiences in Holyoke and western New England with the exciting work of living Puerto Rican composers. In past years, the Victory Players Contemporary Music Ensemble — a group of young and highly accomplished instrumentalists who share a passion for new music — came to Holyoke to work with Tianhui Ng in a residency that took them to local public schools and culminated in an annual live concert for the public.

COVID-19 necessitated a pivot to a virtual format where the players recorded their parts remotely, and NEPM created the final audio/video files. The virtual event included duets by Puerto Rican composers Gabriel Bouche Caro, Carlos Carrillo, Johanny Navarro, Christian A. Quiñones, Iván Enrique Rodríguez, and Omar Surillo. Tianhui Ng, music director of the Pioneer Valley Symphony, and director of orchestral studies Mount Holyoke College, hosted the event and conducted interviews with the composers.

Then, the project took another step forward with a new collaboration with GBH. In June 2021, Tianhui Ng and the Victory Players traveled to GBH’s Fraser Performance Studio in Boston to record ten new compositions and a set of interviews with the composers for the release of El Puerto Rico 4 in the fall of 2021.

THE AGE OF NATURE: A WATCH & LEARN EVENT Airing on NEPM TV during the month of October 2020, PBS’s The Age of Nature brought together scientists and conservationists from all over the world to examine ongoing projects designed to help restore our planet. NEPM’s related virtual event on Oct. 13 convened regional partners to share a local perspective. Presented with the Nature Conservancy, Springfield Science Museums, the Trustees of Reservations, the Connecticut River Conservancy, and U.S. Fisheries and Wildlife, the virtual event focused on the Connecticut River — how migratory fish life cycles, population, and migration patterns are changing, how hydropower dams are being re-regulated, and how non-functioning dams are being removed.

TELLING OUR STORY, SINGING OUR SONG: PRESERVING AND PROTECTING OUR SACRED SPACES IN DANGEROUS TIMES. The Black Church, the moving four-hour series from Dr. Henry Louis Gates, Jr., aired on NEPM TV on Feb. 16 and 17. It traced the broad history and culture of the Black church in America and explored African American faith communities on the frontlines of hope and change. On Feb. 17, NEPM and the Massachusetts Multicultural Film Festival joined forces to present “Telling Our Story, Singing Our Song: Preserving and Protecting Our Sacred Spaces in Dangerous Times.” Amilcar Shabazz of the W.E.B. Du Bois Department of Afro-American Studies at UMass Amherst hosted the online discussion with series producers Stacey Holman and Shayla Harris.

A CONVERSATION WITH EMILY ST. JOHN MANDEL

THE FOUNDING MOTHERS OF NPR

On April 27, NEPM hosted a discussion with author Emily St. John Mandel about “Station Eleven,” her mesmerizing 2014 novel set in a dystopian postpandemic fictional world. The keynote event for NEA Big Read: Pocumtuck Valley, it brought together Libraries in the Woods, Tilton Library, the Springfield Public Forum, and more than 40 other organizations and businesses in Franklin, Hampshire, and Hampden County. The virtual conversation was hosted by NEPM’s Jill Kaufman and concluded with a live Q & A. Later, in June, the conversation continued when “Station Eleven” was selected for the debut of NEPM’s Book Club.

On May 19, NEPM joined with the Springfield Public Forum to present a discussion with author and journalist Lisa Napoli about her new work, “Susan, Linda, Nina, and Cokie: The Extraordinary Story of the Founding Mothers of NPR.” Her book recounts how Susan Stamberg, Linda Wertheimer, Nina Totenberg, and Cokie Roberts paved the way for a new generation of top-notch women journalists who serve at NPR today. The online discussion with Napoli was hosted by NEPM’s Jill Kaufmann.

LIFELONG LEARNING ZOOM WORKSHOPS FOR CHILDREN AND THEIR FAMILIES Over the course of a month in the fall of 2021, NEPM’s education team offered two series of Ready to Learn Family & Community Learning (FCL) workshops, each designed for multi-generational learning — especially in underserved communities. Through child-led activities and experiences, the virtual workshops fostered collaboration, communication, and problem-solving skills among family members.

Each FCL provided four early evening sessions. The first, The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That! FCL, served 10 families with pre-K children at the YMCA of Greater Springfield to foster science inquiry and the engineering and design process through hands-on and digital play.

The second FCL with READY JET GO!, also engaged 10 children, ages 5-8 and their siblings, from the Holyoke Public Schools. These sessions used creative play and exploration to introduce students and grown-ups to digital and hands-on tools to spark interest in science and engineering and develop Science Inquiry and Engineering Design practices and mindsets.

NEPM MENTORS MIDDLE SCHOOLERS In partnership with Springfield Public Schools and the Latino Education Institute, NEPM’s education team led a virtual media literacy enrichment class during the school day at Duggan Academy, giving middle schoolers the chance to engage with professionals in the field of journalism.

Students learned basic media skills, produced their own stories, conducted interviews, shared stories, built musical beats, and created dialogue in a bilingual approach to English and Spanish languages.

NEPM Media Lab Project Director Iohann Vega-Martinez was thrilled with the program. “Our students had fun while learning the fundamentals of storytelling. We also learned a lot from them, especially on how to adapt to the virtual environment in creative and ingenious ways.”

SUMMER OF LEARNING NEPM’s education team offered a Youth Media Lab Summer employment experience. Teens from Springfield and Holyoke participated in a hybrid model (in-person and remote engagement) for a seven-week intensive as they learned about media and digital citizenship. They heard from industry professionals and used audio/video editing software to produce their own journalistic articles, podcasts, and video projects while gaining valuable experience they can apply in their future careers. Partners included UMASS Public Health YPAR Research Team, El Pueblo Latino, The Republican, and MassLive. Funding was provided by MA State Earmark and YouthReach Mass Culture Council.

AS SCHOOLS MATCH WITS MAKES HISTORY . . . IN MORE WAYS THAN ONE As Schools Match Wits, a joint production of New England Public Media and Westfield State University returned for its 60th season on Saturday, April 10, 2021. The previous year’s 59th season was cut short by COVID-19, but with new safety guidelines and carefully designed protocols, the 60th season was able to proceed with the participation of local high schools.

NEPM ASMW Executive Producer Tony Dunne noted at the time, “As the COVID-19 pandemic continued, there were times when we wondered if we were going to be able to make it happen.

But, with the latest safety guidelines — both here in the region and throughout the nation — and thanks to the technical wizardry of our partners at Westfield State University, we’re thrilled to be able to continue this western New England tradition.”

ASMW pits teams of western New England high schoolers against each other in a fun, but competitive game of academic performance. The competition is open to both public and private high schools throughout western New England. The historic 60th season concluded on Saturday, May 22, 2021, with the broadcast on NEPM TV of the championship match between Lenox Memorial and Belchertown High School. At the conclusion of the match, Lenox Memorial took home the coveted Collamore Cup, named for the show’s creator.

AND THE AWARD GOES TO . . .

On April 6, 2021, senior reporter Karen Brown was recognized by the Association of Healthcare Journalists for her four-part series, “Help, not handcuffs,” which explored how police officers and drug users are adapting to “post-overdose outreach,” how the work of recovery coaches fits into the process, and how researchers and policy makers are struggling to judge its effectiveness. Brown was awarded second place in the “Public Health/Small Market” category.

On May 6, 2021, NEPM’s newsroom won an Edward R. Murrow Award from the Radio Television Digital News Association. The award for “excellence in sound” was given in the “Small Market Radio” category in Region 10, which covers the New England states. The winning story, “Officers take a knee to end tense protest in Northampton, Mass.,” was produced by reporter Alden Bourne.

On June 24, 2021, NEPM won an award from the Public Media Journalists Association for a commentary produced by NEPM’s Tema Silk. The winning entry, “Searching for grace while black and blue,” featured a reflection by Andréa Comer, a Black woman who is married to a Black police officer.

NEPM took first place in the Commentary category for Division B — stations with 4-7 full-time staff in their news departments. This marks the fifth consecutive year where NEPM has won an award in this category.

On June 26, 2021, at the 44th New England Emmy Ceremony, NEPM’s Ross Lippman won in the category of “Video Journalist No Time Limit” for a composite of some of his work on Connecting Point during the past year.

Each year, the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Boston/ New England Chapter honors the best in the business with the Emmy Awards, the highest honor in the television industry. Lippman’s composite included “Springfield’s Say Their Names Mural,” “Reckoning with Racial Justice in South Hadley,” and “Westfield Starfires Take the Field During Pandemic.”

NEPM COMMUNITY ADVISORY BOARD PROVIDES PERSPECTIVE The NEPM Community Advisory Board was established by the NEPM board of directors to reflect the tremendous value NEPM places on the aspirations of our community. The CAB serves in an advisory role, offering outside perspective on the diverse educational and cultural needs and interests of the local communities served by NEPM.

NEPM JOINS TABLE STAKES PROJECT On ­­­Sept. 10, 2020, NEPM was selected as a participating station in the third year of the Television News Innovation Table Stakes Project. Supported and funded by the Knight Foundation/Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communications, the program helps stations identify and address the most critical challenges faced by the local news sector and learn how to use the proven model of the “table stakes” process to overcome these challenges.

The model calls stations to serve targeted audiences with targeted content and experiences, publish on the platforms used by targeted audiences, produce and publish continuously to meet audience needs, funnel occasional users to habitual and valuable loyalists, diversify and grow the ways stations earn revenue from the audiences, partner to expand capacity and capabilities at lower and more flexible cost, and drive audience growth and profitability from a “mini-publisher” perspective. The NEPM Tables Stakes team includes employees from content, development, and education. They have established the goal to develop a reciprocal relationship between NEPM and the Latinx/Hispanic communities in western New England. The team is engaging the entire NEPM organization in its efforts.

DECADES OF SERVICE On May 12, 2021, NEPM announced that, after a career spanning more than three decades in public broadcasting, Martin Miller was stepping down from his position as president of NEPM and would move into a new role focused on fundraising efforts for NEPM’s music endowment, journalism and engagement priorities.

Miller led WFCR radio for over two decades, expanding it into the 13-station New England Public Radio network and relocating its main broadcast facility from the University of Massachusetts Amherst campus to stateof-the-art studios in Springfield. The Five College Studios, rebuilt in 2016, remain at UMass in Hampshire House.

Miller became president of New England Public Media in 2019. Joining with WGBY TV, the new public media organization was positioned to continue its public service mission well into the future with expanded journalism, community engagement, cultural, and educational programs and multi-platform services.

“Martin leaves an outstanding legacy of service to public media in western New England,” said then NEPM board chair Robert Feldman. “From his dedicated leadership at WFCR to his vision for uniting with WGBY TV, he has led with principle, insight and wisdom, building and strengthening public media on behalf of audiences and communities across our region.”

In January 2022, New York Public Radio’s Matt Abramovitz was chosen to be Miller’s successor.

CAB members come from a broad cross-section of the NEPM broadcast coverage area. They have widely differing backgrounds, experiences, and interests. They range in age from young adults to seniors. NEPM Chief Content Officer Maxie Jackson, who serves as the staff liaison to the CAB, noted, “I’m very glad that we have this talented and diverse team of people who care about the mission of New England Public Media. They provide us with perspective, point out our blind spots, and advise us going forward.”
