As I reflect on all that is happening at New England College, I am filled with excitement and optimism for the road ahead. This fall marks not only a new academic year but also the development of our new strategic plan for the future of NEC. This plan is a bold roadmap that will guide our growth, strengthen our community, and expand opportunities for our students.

We are setting a course that will carry this institution forward with confidence and purpose. Stay tuned!

One of the most anticipated milestones of this year is the return of football to NEC after a 51-year hiatus.

This historic moment is about much more than the game; it’s about building tradition, creating community, and giving our student-athletes another powerful avenue for leadership and growth. We look forward to seeing alumni, students, and families rally around the team this fall, cheering from the sidelines and celebrating the return of a proud part of NEC history. And I am excited to share that we won our first game on October 25 against Maine Maritime Academy.

I am also proud to share that our enrollment is growing steadily. More students are choosing NEC as their first choice for college than ever before. They represent New Hampshire and 40 other states and 17 countries. They are choosing our college for fantastic academic offerings and, for nearly half of our students, to play college sports. The addition of football, cheerleading, and track and field accounts for a nearly 20% increase in undergraduate enrollment. Add to that the attraction of relatively new academic offerings like Nursing and AI, and you can see how our enrollment is growing. Our strategy is time tested and proven: When we meet students where they are, they choose NEC. At a time when higher education faces significant challenges nationwide, NEC’s momentum speaks to the strength of our mission and the trust that students and families place in us.

This issue of the New England College Magazine highlights something very special: NEC alumni who are leading in family-owned businesses. Their stories show how an NEC education not only prepares students for professional success, but also equips them to carry forward traditions, strengthen communities, and innovate within the enterprises that mean the most to them and their families.

No doubt, this is an inspiring time for NEC. With a renewed vision, historic traditions reborn, strong enrollment driving us forward, and alumni making their mark in meaningful ways, our community has much to celebrate. JEFF BIRNN ’72

For Jeff Birnn, Education ’72, life after New England College took a delicious turn. Though he once imagined a future in teaching, Jeff soon found himself returning home to join his family’s chocolate business—a decision that would define his career and help shape Birnn Chocolates of Vermont into a nationally recognized truffle manufacturer.

The Birnn family’s story in chocolate began nearly a century ago. Jeff’s grandfather opened the first Birnn candy shop in New Jersey in 1932. His father, a gifted cellist, left the concert hall to return to the family business, and Jeff and his younger brother naturally followed suit. By the 1980s, the brothers were determined to take Birnn Chocolates in a bold new direction.

“The business would not be where it is today without them,” Jeff said proudly.

Looking back, Jeff credits his time at New England College with preparing him to take on the challenges of entrepreneurship and leadership. Though his academic path was winding—he explored majors in humanities, philosophy, and business before settling on education—he says NEC gave him the freedom to try, fail, and grow.

At a trade show in Atlanta, they saw an opportunity to innovate. Truffles were almost exclusively imported from Europe at the time, with one flavor: hazelnut.

Jeff and his brother believed they could create a product better suited to the American palate—fresh, flavorful, and produced closer to home. Their gamble paid off.

By focusing exclusively on truffles, investing in equipment that allowed for quick turnaround, and promising same-day shipping, Birnn Chocolates set itself apart in the industry.

Today, Birnn Chocolates of Vermont produces more than 150 truffle options, supplying 2,000 retailers across the United States. The company remains strictly wholesale, with its handcrafted chocolates sold under the names of specialty shops, gourmet retailers, and independent businesses nationwide.

For Jeff, who retired from the business 10 years ago, one of the most rewarding parts of his journey has been seeing the next generation step in. His daughter, Julia, now owns the company, making Birnn Chocolates a woman-owned business, while her husband, Mel, plays an integral role in operations.

"College gave me the opportunity to expand my horizons, make mistakes, stub my toe, and reassess," he reflected. "It taught me to think more carefully about decisions, to not be so brazen, and to see things differently. I credit NEC for giving me that opportunity."

That ability to adapt and rethink would prove essential as Jeff navigated the fast-changing food industry. From building a brand rooted in quality and innovation to leading a multigenerational transition, the lessons he first practiced in Henniker stayed with him.

As Birnn Chocolates of Vermont continues to thrive under Julia’s leadership, Jeff sees his legacy not only in the business but in the values he carried forward from NEC: resilience, curiosity, and the confidence to carve one’s own path.

Katie McInnes '02

For Katie McInnes ’02, the road to leadership in her family’s Maryland-based construction company wasn’t a straight line.

In fact, when she graduated from New England College with a degree in Communications, she imagined pursuing child psychology or graduate study. Instead, her parents posed a question that would reshape her path: “You’re coming to work for the company, right?”

That company—Gray & Son, a sitework and paving contractor with roots dating back to 1908—has been central to her family for generations. McInnes’s grandfather began working there when it was a small operation of just 13 employees. By the 1960s, he had taken over from Mr. Gray, expanding the business while instilling a tireless work ethic that kept him engaged until his final days. Her father added a utility division in the 1980s, while her brother Joel joined right out of high school. McInnes herself stepped in after NEC, starting in accounting before moving through roles in estimating, human resources, marketing, and strategic planning. Today, she and her brother serve as executive vice presidents, preparing to take the reins from their parents in the coming decade.

Gray & Son now operates four asphalt plants and offers a full range of services from excavation to stormwater management—“everything from the ground down,” as McInnes describes it. While paving crews often take the spotlight, she is quick to champion the behind-thescenes teams who make projects possible: “They do some really cool and intense stuff that doesn’t always get recognized.”

McInnes has found her niche on the people-focused side of the business. She thrives in strategic planning, financial oversight, and business development, while her brother concentrates on operations. Together, they are balancing tradition with innovation as they guide the company forward.

Her time at NEC, she says, laid the groundwork for her confidence and adaptability. Small class sizes supported her learning style, and her communications background gave her the tools to modernize the family business through websites and newsletters when she first arrived. Beyond academics, campus life—particularly her involvement with Phi Sigma Sigma sorority—helped her develop independence and leadership skills that serve her today.

McInnes’s efforts have not gone unnoticed. In 2024, Gray & Son received the Baltimore Business Journal’s FamilyOwned Business Award, a recognition of both heritage and forward momentum.

At home, McInnes is raising two daughters and hopes they will see the family company as an open door, whether or not they choose to walk through it. For her, leading Gray & Son is about more than construction. It’s about people, legacy, and building strong foundations— for her family, her company, and her community.

Leadership in a male-dominated industry has presented its challenges, but McInnes sees it as an opportunity to bring a different perspective. “I like being in a room full of men and offering something they don’t,” she reflects.

“Women in construction are now appreciated in a way they weren’t before, and I’m proud to help lead that change.” She is equally passionate about encouraging the next generation to consider careers in the trades, a sector she views as essential yet often overlooked.

Mitchell Goetze '93

When Mitchell Goetze, Business Administration ’93, stepped into his family’s Baltimore candy business after graduating from New England College, he entered a world already rich with history. Goetze’s Candy Company, founded in 1895, was known for its signature Caramel Creams® (known as Bullseyes® in some parts of the country) and later Cow Tales®, treats that became staples in candy aisles across the country. Today, as CEO, Goetze is guiding the sixth generation of family leadership while expanding the company’s reach and strengthening its role in the confectionery industry.

“From a young age, I got the bug and knew I wanted to work in the family business,” he recalled of growing up around the family factory. Goetze found NEC and knew right away that it was the college for him. During his years in Henniker, he found more than academics; he found a community that helped shape his leadership style. Small classes and dedicated professors, particularly John Lyons, left a lasting impression.

Outside the classroom, fraternity life turned out to be an unexpected training ground for management.

“What I thought would be a social group was really a little business that needed to run,” he said. From organizing dues to balancing budgets and guiding peers, he discovered he enjoyed rallying people around common goals. “It really clicked for me, and it prepared me in ways I didn’t realize at the time.”

After graduation, Goetze began his career at the company from the ground up. His early years were spent on the road with the sales team, traveling three weeks out of every month. Those long stretches taught him the realities of distribution, customer relationships, and brand loyalty. “I got my street MBA,” he said, reflecting on the lessons that only firsthand experience could provide. From there, he transitioned into management, where his interest in technology and operations helped modernize the company’s systems and strategies.

That willingness to innovate proved critical as the candy business evolved. Goetze introduced performance metrics and technology tools that streamlined operations and positioned the company for steady growth. Over time, he earned the trust of his family and the board, eventually stepping into the role of CEO. Alongside his brother, who serves as chief operating officer, and a long-tenured leadership team, he now oversees a thriving business that has never strayed from its Baltimore roots.

Beyond his work inside the company, Goetze has become an influential voice in the broader candy industry. He served on the board of trustees for the National Confectioners Association, eventually chairing the board, a role that put him at the table with executives from global brands like Hershey and Mars. In 2023, he was inducted into the Candy Hall of Fame, one of the industry’s highest honors. “That recognition was meaningful because it came from peers and even competitors,” he explained. “It showed we’ve given back to our industry, not just benefited from it.”

Goetze is equally committed to the communities his company serves. Goetze’s Candy supports agriculture programs, local 4-H clubs, and fairs across the country, reflecting the company’s longstanding connection to farmers and Americanmade ingredients. “We’ve been sourcing locally and supporting agriculture for more than 130 years,” he said. “It’s part of who we are.”

For Goetze, leading a candy business is about more than producing sweets—it’s about stewardship. He sees himself as a caretaker of the legacy built by generations before him, while also preparing the sixth generation to earn their place.

“This business is fragile,” he says. “You don’t hand it over just because of a last name. You work hard, you build trust, and you prove yourself.”

From his early days on the road to his role as CEO and industry leader, Mitchell Goetze has demonstrated that leadership in a family business is equal parts tradition and innovation. Under his guidance, the company continues to thrive, proving that the best legacies—like the best candies—are built to last.

This past year marked an exciting new beginning for the New England College Alumni Association. With the goal of strengthening connections between alumni and the College, the Association embarked on a reboot designed to reimagine its role and create more meaningful opportunities for alumni involvement.

The process began with open Zoom calls and countless conversations, inviting alumni to share their ideas and energy for the future. Thanks to the leadership of Alumni Association President Louis Pakula ’85 and the Office of Advancement, more than 30 alumni have stepped forward to take an active role in shaping the Association’s next chapter.

As part of this revitalization, a Bylaws Review Committee was formed to ensure the structure of the Association reflects its renewed vision and long-term goals. Two new leadership positions, Vice President and Secretary, were added to the executive committee, and alumni nominated and elected Johanna Rodden ’03 as Vice President and Molly Wilcox ’14 as Secretary.

In addition, the Association’s four standing committees— Career Networking, Admissions, Marketing and Fundraising, and Events—now have dedicated chairs in place. With alumni stepping into these leadership roles, the committees are well positioned to guide efforts that strengthen connections among graduates, support the College, and expand opportunities for alumni engagement.

“This is about building a stronger, more connected community,” says Pakula. “We want alumni to feel there are many pathways to stay involved with NEC, whether through mentoring, attending events, or helping to support the College’s mission.”

With elected leadership, renewed energy, and a growing group of engaged alumni, the Association is poised to expand its impact. This reboot is more than an organizational change; it’s an invitation for all alumni to reconnect, contribute, and be part of NEC’s future.

As part of Fall Festival Weekend, the NEC community gathered in the Rosamond Page Putnam Center for the Performing Arts for the annual Evening of Excellence Alumni Awards ceremony. Hosted by the Alumni Association and Office of Advancement, the program celebrates alumni and friends whose achievements, leadership, and generosity have made a lasting impact.

The Honorary Alumni Award recognizes an individual who, though not a graduate, has demonstrated extraordinary loyalty, service, and dedication to NEC. For more than 30 years, Eric Goodchild’s bagpipes marked NEC’s most cherished moments—welcoming students at Convocation and celebrating them at Commencement. A talented musician and craftsman, Eric performed across New England, shared his love of music with countless students, and built Barberic Farm with his wife, Barbara. Though he passed away in July 2025, his legacy endures as one of NEC’s most distinctive traditions.

Named in honor of Leon “Lee” Clement ’49, this award celebrates alumni whose volunteer service, leadership, and commitment strengthen NEC’s reputation and community. Jenny Cooley ’90 and John Ferris ’88, both New York City–based alumni, have been instrumental in planning NEC’s largest alumni gatherings. Jenny, a standout student-athlete turned educator, and John, a leader in real estate, have worked together to create meaningful opportunities for graduates to connect and engage with the College.

William Troy Award honorable alan cheever ’58

The William Troy Award is the Alumni Association’s oldest and most prestigious recognition, honoring exceptional leadership and service to NEC and beyond.

The Honorable Alan Cheever’s ’58 distinguished career in law and public service has shaped Vermont and inspired countless others. From Assistant Attorney General to Superior Court Judge, he exemplified fairness, integrity, and dedication, while also remaining a loyal NEC alumnus and active supporter of the Alumni Association.

The Simon Family Award for Philanthropy honors extraordinary generosity and philanthropic leadership that transforms NEC and its future. Lex Scourby ’75, Chairman of the Board of Trustees and a steadfast NEC supporter, has paired professional success with deep commitment to his alma mater. From leading the Alumni Association to serving on trustee committees, his generosity and leadership have profoundly strengthened NEC and enriched the wider community.

Deborah Spring Reed Outstanding Alumni Achievement Award rebecca sherwood brewington ’96 The 2025 Deborah Spring Reed Outstanding Alumni Achievement Award recognizes an alum whose professional accomplishments and global impact exemplify the values of NEC. Rebecca (Sherwood) Brewington ’96 earned her English degree from NEC before joining the Peace Corps in 1997, serving in Poland and leading community projects while teaching English. Since 1999, she has worked internationally in development, collaborating with NGOs to implement sustainable solutions worldwide. Currently Managing Director at Chemonics International, Rebecca resides in Folly Beach, S.C., with her family. This award was presented at the President’s Speaker Series on November 6, 2025.

For the Honorable JP and Donna Marzullo, New England College has become more than a campus in their community—it has become family. Their decision to make a planned gift to NEC grew from years of relationships with students, faculty, and staff and from deep appreciation for the College’s impact on young people.

students. By easing the financial burden, they hope to open doors for young people who might otherwise struggle to complete their education.

The Marzullos first came to NEC through politics, when JP, then active in state leadership, met Dr. Wayne F. Lesperance, Jr., President of NEC. What began as conversations about bringing political candidates to campus quickly evolved into friendship and eventually into a sense of belonging.

For JP, who played football throughout his youth, the return of the sport to NEC was especially meaningful.

He has supported the program closely, from meeting with Head Coach Kevin Kelly to serving as a football consultant and even stepping behind the microphone as a commentator.

“It’s like a big family,” JP reflected. “Over the years, we’ve gotten to know the students and professors here, and we’re impressed with their love for the College and their commitment to their futures.”

But whether it’s football, field hockey, or any other area of campus life, the Marzullos’ focus remains on students.

That sense of family deepened as they began attending hockey and field hockey games and now football games.

They hosted student-athletes for dinner, cheered them on at competitions, and even made larger-than-life posters— “fat heads”—for players as a show of support. Much like their earlier experience mentoring Naval Academy students, the Marzullos found joy in opening their home and lives to NEC students.

“We probably got as much out of it as the students have,” JP said. “We’ve seen firsthand how hard they work to balance academics, athletics, and jobs, and we wanted to find a way to help.”

Their honorary alumni award in 2023 only confirmed what they already felt—that NEC was their school, too. When it came time to think about their estate plans, the choice was clear. The Marzullos have committed a planned gift of $800,000, designated to fund scholarships for future

Introducing The Austin and Betty Ann Kovacs Science Center

New England College celebrated the renaming of its science building as the Austin and Betty Ann Kovacs Science Center on October 3 during Fall Festival weekend. The dedication honors Austin Kovacs ’60 and his wife, Betty Ann, for their extraordinary commitment to advancing STEM education at NEC.

The Kovacses have made an initial $1 million gift to the College and have also pledged a $10 million planned gift, the largest in NEC’s history. Their generosity supported recent renovations to the building and will help develop STEM degree program at NEC that will provide students with expanded opportunities in fields such as artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, bioscience, and healthcare.

$10 MILLION PLANNED GIFT Austin Kovacs, an NEC graduate in civil engineering, went on to a distinguished career at the U.S. Army Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory in Hanover, N.H., earning international recognition for his expertise. His work included developing patented drilling and testing devices, conducting research at both the North and South Poles, and having an Antarctic glacier named in his honor.

By naming the Austin and Betty Ann Kovacs Science Center, NEC pays tribute to the couple’s leadership and vision. Their support will enhance student-faculty research and career preparation for generations to come, solidifying the College’s position as a leader in STEM and healthcare education.

ATHLETICS NEWS Transforming NEC's Athletics Center: Progress, Accessibility, and Strength Lab Completion

NEC’S ATHLETICS CENTER RENOVATION

is advancing steadily, bringing bold upgrades that reflect the College’s commitment to athletic and campus life excellence. The ongoing project, now deep into phase two, is transforming the existing Bridges Gymnasium while adding new spaces for training, wellness, and administrative support.

Recent Milestones and Construction Status Construction teams report that brickwork is 90 percent complete on the north side of the building, and façade work has started on the front elevation. Sheathing on the exterior walls is finished, and the roof has been tied into the original gym structure with flashing in place, ensuring the addition is now weather-tight.

Inside, work on the lower level is well underway: framing is nearly complete, and utility infrastructure is being installed. The basement renovation is progressing, with tile work done, partitions installed, and the new sewer pump operational. In the training room area, flooring has been laid and ceiling/painting work has begun. Meanwhile, interior demolition of the old gym’s lower level is finished, and underground plumbing and utility systems are being implemented in preparation for the new layout.

One visible new feature is the ADA accessible ramp and front entry stairway, currently taking shape to ensure equitable access to the facility for all users. These changes highlight NEC’s desire to make the Athletics Center compliant with modern accessibility standards and better integrated into campus pathways.

Strength Lab and Amenities Delivered Phase one of the renovation (completed in 2024) included the resurfacing of the turf field and state-of-the-art upgrades to

the Strength Lab. That Strength Lab is now fully operational, serving as a cornerstone facility for NEC’s student-athletes.

Moving into phase two, NEC is expanding and reimagining the Strength Lab within the new addition, alongside a campus-wide fitness center, updated locker rooms, coaches’ offices, sports medicine spaces, and enhanced strength and training areas. The design intention emphasizes both functional excellence and architectural harmony with NEC’s existing aesthetic.

Looking Ahead With the Strength Lab already in place and major construction milestones reached, NEC is well on track to deliver a modern, accessible, high-performance athletics facility that supports both competitive sports and general student wellness.

A two-sport athlete, Graham plays forward on the men’s Ice Hockey team and also plays on the golf team. During the 2024–2025 hockey season, he played 13 games and tallied five blocks and three goals.

In June, he was named to the New England Hockey Conference All-Academic Team after maintaining a minimum of a 3.0 cumulative GPA. In golf, Graham recorded the program's all-time best score with a 70 (-2) on September 27, 2024, at the Keene State Invitational in Keene, N.H. He has been named a GNAC Golfer of the Week, and he was a two-time medalist at the Emmanuel College Invitational on September 18, 2024, and the Keene State Spring Classic on April 30, 2024. He was named to the GNAC All-Academic Team and has competed in the NCAA Championships. On September 25, 2025, Graham staged an impressive comeback to lead the 'Grims to a one-stroke victory at a weekday match hosted by Keene State College at Keene Country Club. In October, he led the team to the GNAC championship for the third year in a row and will be headed to Florida for the NCAA Tournament May 12–15. Outside of NEC Athletics, Graham is a Criminal Justice major minoring in Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness and is a member of the Criminal Justice Club.

Gina Sciortino '25 I massachusetts

Gina is a two-sport athlete who plays defense for women’s Ice Hockey and attack for women’s Lacrosse. During the 2024–2025 hockey season, she played 21 games for the 'Grims and racked up five shots on goal while blocking 22. In June, she was named to the New England Hockey Conference All-Academic Team after maintaining a minimum of a 3.0 cumulative GPA. During the 2025 lacrosse season, Gina played in seven games and scored one goal. She was also named to the GNAC All-Academic Conference Team for earning a 3.25 cumulative GPA. In April 2025, she was inducted into Chi Alpha Sigma National Athletic Honor Society, which recognizes student-athletes who participate in a sport at the varsity intercollegiate level, have completed at least 60 classroom credits, and have earned a 3.5 or higher cumulative GPA. Beyond her athletic pursuits, Gina is an academic all-star. She earned her BA in Business Administration with two minors in 2025 and is now pursuing her dual MBA in Strategic Leadership and Sports & Recreation Management at NEC. She serves as president of the Omicron Delta Kappa Leadership Honor Society, vice president of the Delta Mu Delta International Honor Society in Business, and on the executive boards of the Business Club and the Sports and Recreation Club.

NEC FOOTBALL RETURNS The roar of the crowd and the clash of helmets returned to New England College on September 6, marking the full return of football and igniting excitement across campus and the broader NEC community.

The season kicked off with an exhibition game at Dean College on August 27. NEC hosted Plymouth State on September 6 for the Pilgrims’ first home game in 51 years, an historic moment for the College. The 'Grims won their first game on October 25 against Maine Maritime Academy.

The season wrapped up on November 15 at the University of New England in Biddeford, Maine.

Football’s return to NEC marks more than just the launch of a new program—it signals a renewed sense of school spirit, community pride, and a reminder of the lessons sports can teach both on and off the field.

“We can’t wait to involve our community in Pilgrims football—and everything we’re doing in NEC Athletics. We want to bring them along with us and continue to grow this area of New Hampshire,” stated Dave DeCew, Director of Athletics at NEC. “We love to have folks come from nearby towns to support our teams, and we want to make sure we do the same thing within our community, making sure we're getting out there and helping to support all the other important ventures that are happening.”

In many ways, the return of football has reminded everyone that NEC is more than a place to study—it is a community that thrives when people come together around shared purpose and pride. The lessons of teamwork and sportsmanship found on the field echo in the stands and throughout the college. They remind all Pilgrims, past and present, that NEC is strongest when it moves forward together.

As NEC celebrates this new chapter, one thing is clear: football is back, and it has already brought the community closer. The game itself is only part of the story. The true victory lies in the connections being made, the traditions being born, and the excitement being shared throughout NEC and the greater community.

CHEER RETURNED TO NEC this fall with Stacey Brulotte, who joined NEC in March, at the helm.

For Brulotte, the return to coaching is more than a new role—it’s a homecoming to her lifelong passion.

Brulotte began cheering at age 10 and went on to compete at the state, national, and even international levels. After stepping away to focus on her family, she knew she wanted to return to the sport she calls her “happy place.” Coaching youth, junior high, and all-star teams in the past, she has led athletes to success at regional and state competitions. Now, she is eager to shape NEC’s program with that same energy.

This year, the Pilgrims’ Cheer squad is focused on sideline cheer, supporting football and basketball. Looking ahead,

Dr. Nicole Decoteau Selected for Prestigious U.S. Department of State Fellowship Dr. Decoteau will teach virtual English as a Foreign Language (EFL) courses to provide academic and professional development at Sumy State University in northern Ukraine.

From the Granite State to northern Ukraine, New England College’s influence is stretching across borders thanks to Dr. Nicole Decoteau. Director of First-Year Writing and ESOL and Associate Professor of ESL, Decoteau has been selected by the U.S. Department of State to be an English Language Fellow (ELF) for a virtual project at Sumy State University in northern Ukraine.

Dr. Decoteau is among more than 100 participants in the prestigious Virtual English Language Educator Program for the 2025 academic year. In her role, she will teach four courses at Sumy State, including English as a foreign language methodology for pre-service educators, workshops for university professors, and practical English for students majoring in English or philology. Despite the daily challenges Ukrainians face, Dr. Decoteau’s work will provide essential academic and professional development opportunities for both students and faculty.

This marks Dr. Decoteau’s second appointment as an English Language Fellow. In June 2025, she completed a short-term fellowship supporting educators in Uzbekistan.

“I am honored to continue serving in this program,” said Dr. Decoteau. “Working with colleagues in Ukraine and Uzbekistan has reinforced for me how meaningful education is in building resilience, community, and connection across borders.”

The Virtual English Language Educator Program is the premier opportunity for experienced Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) professionals to enact meaningful and sustainable changes in English instruction abroad. Dr. Sarah Gunnery Awarded Landmark NIH Grant to Advance Parkinson’s Disease Research First-ever NIH grant awarded to a New England College faculty member will support innovative research to improve communication and well-being for people living with Parkinson’s disease.

Dr. Gunnery’s research seeks to transform this challenge into an opportunity for intervention. The project will examine whether teaching people with Parkinson’s to deliberately produce facial expressions—such as Duchenne smiles that engage the eyes—can improve communication, reduce stigma, and help preserve social engagement.

“It’s an incredible honor to receive this NIH award—not just for me, but for New England College,” said Dr. Gunnery.

“Our work has the potential to make a meaningful difference in how people with Parkinson’s communicate their feelings, connect with others, and maintain their well-being.”

According to the NIH’s Public Health Relevance Statement, “an increase in the ability to communicate could help people with Parkinson’s disease stay socially engaged, thereby better preserving their quality of life.” With social engagement recognized as essential for healthy aging, this research carries profound implications for public health.

Dr. Sarah Gunnery, Associate Professor of Psychology and Community Mental Health at New England College, has been awarded a prestigious three-year research grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), totaling nearly $500,000. The grant, funded through the NIH’s R15 Academic Research Enhancement Award (AREA) mechanism, supports Dr. Gunnery’s groundbreaking project, “Developing Strategies to Decrease Facial Masking in Parkinson's Disease.”

This historic achievement marks the first NIH grant ever awarded directly to an NEC faculty member, underscoring the College’s growing presence in impactful, federally funded research.

Dr. Gunnery will work in collaboration with Dr. Harlan Fichtenholtz at Keene State College.

Facial masking, or hypomimia, is a common symptom of Parkinson’s disease that reduces automatic facial movements such as smiling or frowning. This decreased expressivity can cause others to misinterpret emotions, leading to social stigma, communication barriers, and diminished quality of life.

Chelsea Hanrahan DIRECTOR—NEC LIBRARIES

Giving Names to the Missing: A Librarian’s Journey into Genetic Genealogy When Chelsea Hanrahan—Director, NEC Libraries— began exploring genealogy during the pandemic, she thought it might be a good way to keep her mind active.

What started as a hobby quickly evolved into something extraordinary: volunteer work using genetic genealogy to help identify missing persons and bring closure to families who have waited decades for answers.

Hanrahan volunteers with the DNA Doe Project, a national nonprofit that assists law enforcement in identifying “Does”—unidentified individuals—through DNA and genealogical research. “We don’t charge law enforcement for anything,” she explains. “It’s all about bringing names back to people who’ve been missing for years, sometimes generations.”

Her path into this field was shaped by her love of research, genealogy, and true crime. After taking an introductory class in investigative genetic genealogy, Hanrahan interned with a forensic research group and soon found herself contributing to real cases. One of the most memorable was the identification of Ina Jane Doe, found in an Illinois state park in 1993. Hanrahan worked alongside forensic anthropologists and appeared in the book Lay Them to Rest, which chronicled the case.

Today, Hanrahan balances her role at NEC with her volunteer efforts, which have taken her from local New England cold cases to historic projects such as helping identify victims of the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre. She also participates in annual retreats in Texas, where teams of genealogists work intensively to solve cases in a weekend. Some of her work has been featured on the television series Naming the Dead, available on Hulu and Disney+.

For Hanrahan, the most meaningful part of the work is its impact on families. She recalls the case of “Tyler County Jane Doe,” whose identity was uncovered decades after her death. “Her daughter had never had anything of her mother’s,” Hanrahan says. “When she was finally given her mother’s watch and earring, it was like Christmas. That small connection mattered so much.” In another case, a son who grew up believing his mother had abandoned him learned the truth: she’d been murdered. “That knowledge completely changed how he understood his own life,” she says.

At NEC, Hanrahan has brought her passion into the classroom. She recently developed a course titled Criminal Investigations, Cold Cases, and Justice, which encourages students to examine New England cold cases and think critically about the investigative process. “I want students to see that even if you’re not a detective, your skills can contribute to this work,” she notes. “I’m a librarian, but research, persistence, and curiosity are just as important in solving these mysteries.”

Though the field of investigative genetic genealogy is still young, Hanrahan sees tremendous potential. Cases that once sat untouched for decades are now being solved in months, sometimes preventing future crimes.

“It’s exciting because every time you identify someone, it opens up new leads,” she says. “You’re not just solving one case—you’re potentially uncovering many more.”

For families who have lived with unanswered questions, Hanrahan’s work helps restore dignity to the missing.

“Providing closure may sound cliché,” she reflects, “but the ripple effect is real. It changes lives.”

NAMED FIRST POET LAUREATE OF MASSACHUSETTS

Regie Gibson—award-winning poet, educator, and 2007 graduate of New England College’s MFA in Creative Writing program—has been appointed the first-ever Poet Laureate of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

The honor recognizes Gibson’s decades-long dedication to the craft of poetry and his work in bringing the written and spoken word to new audiences.

For Gibson, poetry is not just a personal pursuit but a public act. “If my work keeps someone writing, then I’ve done my job,” he explained. He hopes readers approach his poetry the way he once approached Pablo Neruda’s—inspired to pick up the pen again. “I like the idea of leaving questions behind for others to answer,” he reflected. “I gravitate toward poetry that is less about finality and more about continuing the search.”

That sense of inquiry has shaped both Gibson’s creative work and his teaching. He serves as Co-Artistic Director of Pedagogy at Arts for Social Cohesion in Boston; as Assistant Professor at Berklee College of Music in Boston, where he teaches spoken-word and performance poetry; and as an instructor at Clark University in Worcester, Mass. Known as a dynamic performer as well as a writer, he has long used his voice and presence to connect with audiences of all ages.

From classrooms to community stages, his poetry becomes an invitation—an open door through which others can explore language, identity, and the shared human experience.

As Massachusetts Poet Laureate, Gibson now has what he calls “a bigger microphone.” The role allows him to collaborate with educators, artists, and civic leaders to elevate poetry’s presence across the state.

More importantly, it positions him to mentor the next generation of writers and thinkers. “The people I meet through this role are folks who genuinely want to do right by the Commonwealth,” he said. “I’m honored to be included among them.”

Despite his achievements, Gibson admits he doesn’t often think about legacy. Yet, when pressed, he describes an aspiration rooted not in accolades but in impact: “If someone can look at my work as evidence of another human being seeking and then feel empowered to continue that search themselves, then that’s the kind of positive effect I hope to have.”

For New England College, Gibson’s appointment is a source of pride and inspiration. His journey exemplifies the transformative power of the arts and the way NEC’s Creative Writing program equips its graduates to shape culture at the highest levels. “You’re giving me an even bigger microphone with this role,” he said, “and I’m glad to use it.”

From NEC’s writing workshops to the halls of the Massachusetts State House, Regie Gibson continues to expand the reach of poetry. His appointment as the Commonwealth’s first Poet Laureate is not only a personal milestone but also a recognition of the enduring power of words to challenge, inspire, and unite.

David Boutin is enjoying retirement in New Hampshire, not far from NEC, after a 40-year career in teaching and coaching. He and his wife, Pauline, will celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary next spring. David enjoys watching his granddaughters Mary, Ruby, and Clare grow and occasionally catches up with classmate John Dearborn ’76. He’s looking forward to his 50th Reunion next year.

Bill Neale has remained active on several town and nonprofit boards since retiring in 2020. He and his wife, Martha, enjoy maintaining their 1815 home and garden, and with Martha now retired, “every day is a true Saturday.” The couple visits their daughter, Abby, in Boston, where she is an art teacher and active artist. Dave Chiappetta was the first NEC student to earn an IDM in Law Enforcement, completing internships with the State Police and Hanover Police Department before a 15-year career in Connecticut law enforcement. He later spent 31 years teaching criminal justice and political science. Now retired in Boynton Beach, Fla., with his wife, Donna, Dave enjoys life with their five grandchildren. His son, Dave Chiappetta, Jr. ‘05., is also an NEC graduate, and his brother Peter ’63 is a member of the NEC Hall of Fame.

Ray Wilcox shared that this year’s Alumni Weekend was one of the best yet for the NEC All-Stars. He especially enjo yed reconnecting with fellow alum ni, meeting current students, and visiting the newly revived campus radio station.

Eric Goodchild For more than three decades, the sound of bagpipes signaled the beginning and end of life-changing journeys at New England College. At Convocation, the lone piper led new students into the NEC community, and at Commencement, he proudly played them forward into the world.

That piper—Eric Goodchild—passed away in July, leaving behind a legacy as enduring as the music he carried through campus traditions.

Goodchild’s presence at NEC began 31 years ago, when the College invited him to perform at its most significant ceremonies. What started as a single performance grew into a defining ritual for generations of students and families. “Our students began and ended their academic journeys following the lone piper as he played them into our community and celebrated their departure,” said NEC President Dr. Wayne F. Lesperance, Jr. “Guests often shared how much they loved the tradition, and I couldn’t agree more.”

A lifelong musician, Goodchild was passionate about the history and spirit of the pipes. Beyond New England College, he performed at parades, celebrations, and memorial services throughout New England, where his music served as both a joyful call and a solemn tribute.

He was known for his skill, but even more for his warmth, humor, and commitment to community.

Goodchild is survived by his family, including his wife and children, who shared his love of music and traditions.

Friends and colleagues remember him as someone who lifted spirits with a tune, whether at a College milestone or a quiet local gathering.

Though his pipes have fallen silent, Goodchild’s music lives on in the memories of NEC graduates who walked behind him, marking the rhythm of their own beginnings and endings. His legacy continued to echo on campus this fall, when the College honored him during Fall Festival Weekend. He was named an honorary alumnus, placing him permanently among the ranks of the students he so joyfully celebrated.

“Eric will forever be part of our story,” President Lesperance said. “He is sorely missed.”

Dr. Hilton Hallock The New England College community remembers Dr. Hilton Hallock, former Provost, who passed away on May 6, 2025, in Anchorage, Alaska.

Dr. Hallock served NEC with vision, intellect, and warmth, leaving a legacy that continues to shape the College’s academic life. Known for her steadfast belief in the transformative power of education, she championed initiatives that expanded academic offerings and strengthened the College’s commitment to student success. Her leadership was marked by a deep dedication to inclusivity, mentorship, and the creation of supportive academic communities.

Hilton’s passion for education and equity was evident from an early age. Growing up in Nashville during school desegregation, she embraced the opportunities of integration and carried that conviction into her career.

A graduate of the University of Virginia, she dedicated herself to building communities grounded in trust and respect—principles she lived out in every role she held.

At New England College, she guided faculty and students with both high standards and genuine care. Even after her tenure as Provost, Hilton remained a source of wisdom and encouragement, offering friendship and mentorship to colleagues and former students alike. Her influence extended beyond NEC, culminating in her leadership at Alaska Pacific University, where she helped guide the institution toward becoming an Alaska-Native serving university and developed programs addressing health and environmental needs across the state.

Hilton’s life was defined not by titles or accolades, though she earned many, but by the lives she touched. She was a mentor, a storyteller with wit and warmth, and a leader who always encouraged others to “think bigger.”

She is survived by her father; sister and brother-in-law; and nieces and nephews, whose futures she believed in deeply.

As we mourn her passing, we also celebrate the indelible mark she left on NEC and the countless communities she served. In her memory, we honor her challenge to act bigger, think bigger, and strive always to serve others through education.
