OF LAND, SEA & SPIRIT

13 th September – 10 th October 2025

I have always painted from visual knowledge and experience, finding the painting in the physical act of working.
Judy Buxton, 2025

Acclaimed artist Judy Buxton returns to New Craftsman Gallery this autumn as our 2025 St Ives September Festival painter.

In this new collection of works she brings together three subjects that are intrinsic to her life as an artist - the quiet elegance of still life, the raw energy of the sea and the timeless strength and grace of the equine form.

Each canvas is an exploration of movement and stillness, light and texture, where broad, expressive brushstrokes capture both the fleeting and the eternal.

This catalogue presents selected works featured within the larger exhibition. The full exhibition can be viewed in the gallery and also on our website.

From windswept ocean horizons to the delicate bloom of a flower, her work is infused with a deep understanding and sensitivity to nature’s moods, celebrating beauty in its most honest and unguarded forms. Her work is created with a focus on the physical act of painting and her direct engagement with the elements and her canvas: sound, movement, weather, light and the physicality of paint are all essential to her working process.

Born in Sydney in 1961, Judy Buxton follows both Australian and British

traditions of landscape painting, from Arthur Streeton and Fred Williams to John Constable, David Bomberg, Frank Auerbach, Joan Eardley and Gerhard Richter.

She is a Fine Art graduate of both Falmouth College of Art and the Royal Academy Schools in London, and has been awarded the Sir Cyril Sweet Prize, the Royal Watercolour Prize, the Gold Medal from the Worshipful Company of Painter-Stainers, and The Hunting Art Prize. She lives and works on Cornwall’s Lizard Peninsula.
