WHERE TO START? 3 COMMON DIY MISTAKES TO AVOID CONTRIBUTED WRITER

4 NEWBURGH MAGAZINE 2021 Second Quarter

Many home renovation projects can be completed without the help of professional contractors, especially when homeowners take steps to avoid some of the more common mistakes made by DIYers. But some projects still need to be left to professionals.

Pride tends to swell when homeowners successfully complete do-it-yourself projects on their homes. In addition to saving homeowners money, DIY projects provide a unique way for men and women to personally connect with their homes. The ability to look at a finished project and say it’s a result of your own handiwork can make a home feel more your own. As fun and fulfilling as DIY projects can be, they also can be nerve-wracking and induce anxiety. When DIY projects falter, fixing them can prove costly, as homeowners typically must call in contractors to correct their mistakes and get a project back on track. That results in additional labor and material costs that might have been avoidable.

project larger than painting or wallpapering.

1. Failure to secure permits

3. Incorrect materials

Even though homeowners own their homes, that does not mean they have carte blanche to do what they want with them. Many renovation projects require homeowners to secure permits before projects can commence. Some may even require additional permits as the projects advance. If proper permits are not secured, homeowners may be fined and projects may be nixed, regardless of how much money homeowners have spent up to that point. Before beginning a home renovation project, homeowners should always contact their local permit office to determine if any permits are required. Bankrate.com notes that permits are often required for any

Whether it’s to save money or a byproduct of inexperience, DIYers do not always choose the correct materials for a job. Experienced contractors have ample experience working with all sorts of materials and are therefore in a unique position to recommend the best materials for any given job. That resource is not available for DIYers, who must perform ample research before beginning a job so the project involves the most appropriate materials. Incorrect materials can be a sunken cost that derails a project, but even jobs completed using incorrect materials may need to be redone a lot more quickly than those that employed the right materials the first time.

2. Overestimating your abilities DIY television shows make home renovation projects look easy, but reality suggests otherwise. Homeowners with little or no experience renovating a home may want to take classes before they think about starting a project on their own. Even online tutorials tend to make jobs appear easier than they are. Roofing and plumbing projects tend to be best left to the professionals, as these projects can be either dangerous or vulnerable to disaster if not addressed by trained professionals.

WORK EFFICIENTLY MAKE THE 24 HOURS OF THE DAY COUNT CONTRIBUTED WRITER A time crunch is no stranger to many adults. Busy professionals balancing work and their personal lives often wish there was more time in the day. Though it might be impossible to create more minutes in the day, adults can take steps to be more efficient with their time. The more efficient people can be with their time, the more that time should begin to feel like their own.

Audit yourself It’s hard to be more efficient with your time if you’re not certain about where you’re being inefficient. Audit how you’re spending time each day, jotting down everything you do during the day and how much time you spend on each individual task. Audits can be made easier by utilizing time tracking apps on a smartphone, some of which are free. The app need not provide a bunch of bells and whistles (such apps are generally designed to help businesses track employees’ production). A simple app that lets you track each activity and the time it takes to perform it is all you need to conduct a successful audit.

Categorize tasks Tasks can be categorized so those that are absolutely necessary are never given a lower priority than nonessential tasks. In addition, tasks can be categorized according to how much time each one figures to take. Once tasks have been

[

categorized, choose distraction-free times of day to perform high-priority, time-consuming tasks. The ability to focus on such tasks free from distraction should cut down on the time it takes to complete them, potentially freeing up more time in your day.

Don’t hesitate to delegate When categorizing tasks, create a category for tasks that can be delegated. Parents may want to delegate meal prep to children who are old enough to hold their own in the kitchen, while adult partners can divide up household chores so no one person is doing the bulk of the work around the house.

Turn devices off Devices are distracting, and various surveys and studies have proven that. Research from RescueTime, an iOS- and Android-supported app created to monitor phone use, found that people spend and average of three hours and 15 minutes per day on their phones. Adults who are pressed for time may benefit by turning their devices off during the work day and/or when trying to tackle tasks at home. In fact, turning a smartphone or other device off when you don’t need it to perform a given task may be the simplest and most effective way to make more efficient use of your time.

“EXTRA” SPACE CONTRIBUTED WRITER

Finding more space to store and display all the “stuff” used for day-to-day living, as well as life’s pleasures, can be an adventure that ends with everything in its perfect place. Woodcraft can help you with a few ideas to kick-start your space hunt and then suggestions for tools and supplies to make your storage projects successful. Small tables with enclosed storage underneath, chests and trunks that provide seating, benches with built-in storage, beds with built-in space underneath or in the headboard, and kitchen islands with concealed nooks are all options to manage “stuff.” In the kitchen, add drawers to the space (toe-kick) beneath lower cabinets to store rarely used items. Shelving and bookcases, either built-in or freestanding/open or enclosed, will transform unused wall areas or sections of large closets into instant storage for a wide range of items. Nooks cut out of the wall and covered by pictures offer one of many concealed storage options that also include nooks or drawers in the sides of enclosed staircases. The ideas for storage and display projects are endless and can be found through Internet searches and on Woodcraft.com in books like “Stanley Built-Ins & Storage” by David Schiff, in the Woodcraft blog, and in free videos and articles.

Plan for Painting Up Front “When choosing where to develop storage and display space, you have the opportunity to rethink the colors in rooms where changes will be made,” Woodcraft Public Relations Manager and blogger Lori Harper said. “By using paint in building, buying or repurposing storage pieces, you can change or supplement an existing color palette.” Woodcraft stocks a wide selection of finishing and paint products, including the versatile General Finishes Milk Paint, General Finishes Flat Out Flat Topcoat, Black Dog Salvage Furniture Paint, and Black Dog Salvage Guard Dog and Show Dog Topcoats.

ple with a pocket-hole jig for every application to create very strong joints. Check out Festool’s CXS Compact Drill Driver Set for drilling pocket holes and adding pocket screws, as well as handling other day-to-day drilling and driving challenges with comfort. Tight spaces, dark spots, and corners are no match for it. For projects that require using nearly invisible fasteners, the industrial strength Grex 23-gauge Headless Pinner leaves only the tiniest of entry holes, making it ideally suited for finishing work, detailed woodworking, light wood assembly, decorative trim, dowel and joint pinning, and picture frame assembly. To provide air pressure for the pinner, Rolair’s JC10PLUS Compressor is a good choice. The oilless machine features a 1 HP, single-stage, two-cylinder motor/pump and a stainless steel reed valve that runs on low RPM for optimum quiet operation. Building drawers is easy with the Kreg Drawer Slide Jig that supports drawer boxes while mounting slides to the drawer. The jig works with ball-bearing, epoxy-coated, and undermount slides for perfect positioning ever y time. Whether you’re boring shelf pin holes in a new entertainment center or adding adjustable shelving in an existing cabinet, the Kreg Shelf Pin Jig will help you get the job done quickly and accurately. The Kreg Cabinet Hardware Jig makes it easy to install knobs and pulls on drawers and doors.

Shortcuts & Safety To save time when building drawers, check out the Ready-to-Use Prefinished Birch Drawer Sides at Woodcraft. For some really made-to-order storage units, use WoodRiver Cubby Cube Connectors. Available in three configurations — cross-brackets, T-brackets or L-brackets —these handy connectors allow for quick and easy construction of multiple cube storage using 3⁄4”-thick material in any size you need. Protect your ears while using power tools with ISOtunes Professional Noise Isolating Earbuds — OSHA-approved hearing protection and Bluetooth technology so you can connect to a smartphone and listen to music. If protection is all you need, consider the Pyramex BP 3000 Banded Earplugs.

BASKETS ARE BEAUTIFUL AND MULTI-FUNCTIONAL It’s hard to pretend your accumulated items don’t exist when drawers and cabinets fill up so quickly. While you’re creating new storage spaces throughout your home, make sure to utilize the height and depth of shelves and the spaces under counters and cabinets. Baskets are decorative and cost effective accessories. *BONUS* They can make mundane items look aesthetically pleasing as well.

HOME A PLACE TO CALL

REALTOR LISA BRADSHAW SHARES TIPS AND TRENDS FOR HOME-BUYERS WRITER: MEGAN PURAZRANG

Lisa Bradshaw is a lifetime resident of Boonville and Warrick County. “I’m super familiar with the area,” Bradshaw says. “I’m always interested in helping people who want to move into Warrick County and I serve other areas as well. I would be happy to help anyone if they are thinking of selling and would do a market analysis of their property just to see where they sit, if it is even feasible for them to sell I would be happy to do that free of charge for them as a service.” Q: ARE THERE ANY CURRENT TRENDS IN THE TYPE OF HOUSES PEOPLE ARE LOOKING FOR OR IN THE MARKET IN GENERAL RIGHT NOW? A: I see people moving from the bigger cities to the smaller communities. That’s what I’m noticing at the moment also people are realizing with interest rates low like they are, they can buy more than they could have maybe four or five years ago. They have more buying power because of the low interest rates and people are not saving that money and thinking, “Oh, we’ll just spend $100,000 and have a nice house and save the money” they are spending their limit, they are going bigger. I don’t know if that’s because of COVID-19 and every body was at home. I think people are thinking, “We could use a little bit bigger house.”

2021 Second Quarter NEWBURGH MAGAZINE 13

Q&A F E AT U R E

Q: DO YOU THINK THE SMALL HOME TREND AND COMMUNITIES HAS AFFECTED HOW PEOPLE THINK ABOUT BUYING HOUSES? A: No, I think there’s always going to be a market for a first time home. I do see a trend of people looking a little bit bigger knowing they can spend a little bit more and they are wanting more house and more yard. Q: DO YOU HAVE ANY TIPS FOR FIRST TIME HOME-BUYERS WHO ARE INTERESTED IN THE PROCESS BUT DON’T KNOW WHERE TO START? A: The absolute, 100 percent, most important thing especially if you’re a first time home-buyer, is to go ahead and go through that pre-approval process with your lender and see if you are maybe eligible for any government funded loans that help with your down payment. In the market with houses selling in hours sometimes with the inventory so low you have to be ready when the time comes to put that offer in – there’s not time to say, I’ll talk to my lender tomorrow or I’ll call my lender Monday because by then that house is going to be gone. So absolutely, the first thing is to be pre-approved and see what your budget is going to be and be ready to move forward when you do find the right house. Q: WHEN THINKING ABOUT SPENDING ON A HOME, SHOULD PEOPLE BE MORE CONSCIOUS OF STAYING ON THE LOWER END OF THEIR BUDGET OR BE UNAFRAID OF GOING TOWARD THE HIGHER END TO PURCHASE A DREAM HOME FOR INSTANCE? A: Well, nobody wants to be married to their house payment. And there again, it is important to go through the pre-approval process because your lender will run your numbers with your debt to income ratio and they will give you a range in which you can be in and then you just have to do what is comfortable for you. Q: WARRICK COUNTY IS GOING THROUGH A LOT OF GROWTH AND SOME OF THAT COULD BE ATTRIBUTED TO PEOPLE MOVING INTO THE AREA FROM CITIES AS YOU MENTIONED. CAN YOU TALK A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THE CHANGES OF THE COUNTY AND AREA AND HOW THAT HAS AFFECTED THE HOUSING MARKET, IN YOUR OPINION? A: It’s a good thing for Warrick County. Newburgh has been exploding for quite some time, but we are seeing growth and new subdivisions in Boonville as well and we are seeing growth in Elberfeld because they are more rural, quiet communities. A lot of times people are looking for a bit of property that’s not in a subdivision with a little more room and they are obviously going to move out into the more rural areas of the county. Q: IS THERE ANY UNIQUE TRENDS FROM AN ARCHITECTURE PERSPECTIVE THAT YOU’VE NOTICED MORE WANT FOR WITH HOME BUYERS? A: There’s been a high interest lately in pole barn style houses, but of course your average three-bedroom, two-bathroom ranch is the thing that ever ybody wants right now.

14 NEWBURGH MAGAZINE 2021 Second Quarter

Q: WHERE DOES THAT RANCH STYLE AND IDEA COME FROM? A: That’s just kind of the norm unless you have a bigger family or you have a need for more property somewhere. That’s just what [many] people are looking for in general. That is definitely the most common, I would say 80 percent of people I come across who are looking for a home want a three bedroom, two bedroom ranch house. Q: IS THERE ARE DEMOGRAPHIC YOU ARE NOTICING MORE OF IN TERMS OF WHO IS BUYING IN THE CURRENT MARKET? A: Most of buyers right now are in the 25-40 year range. I have some that are older, those people who have growing families or because of the interest rates they found out that they can afford a house – they are looking and they are looking hard. Q: ARE THERE ANY MISCONCEPTIONS YOU COULD CLEAR UP AS FAR AS IF IT IS ACTUALLY CHEAPER TO PURCHASE A HOUSE VERSUS PAYING RENT? A: If you can possibly do it, it is cheaper to buy a house with the interest rates so low right now. The rates are in the upper two’s which is just unheard of and what your payment would be on a 30-year loan is going to be unbelievably more that you could buy instead of renting just a two bedroom apartment or something. It’s going to be much cheaper. Q: DID YOU FIND THAT THE PANDEMIC AND THE YEAR 2020 HAD AN DETRIMENTAL EFFECT AT ALL – DID YOU SEEN ANY

We Deliver... Lunch and Dinner!!

UPS AND DOWNS YOU COULD SHARE COMING OUT OF THAT YEAR AND GOING INTO 2021? A: Well, when we had the shutdown of course that was kind of scary for everyone. Obviously you don’t want to put your house on the market at the time and have people through it that you didn’t know and the realtors were actually ver y apprehensive about showing properties during that couple of months. But all in all, even with taking two months off last year, I’ve had my best year that I’ve ever had. I don’t know if it is an upswing of people wanting the bigger houses because they were stuck inside for so long or what it is. It’s just crazy. As soon as a house would come on the market if it is decent at all, [the house] is gone in a day or two. If it’s priced well and in a good location sometimes even hours. Q: IS THERE ANY WAY TO KNOW HOW LONG THE INTEREST RATE WILL REMAIN SO LOW – IS THERE AN URGENCY TO ACT FAST VERSUS WAITING?

A: Well we never really know what is going to happen. Interest rates have inched just a bit but they are still lower than they’ve been in years and the market is still remaining super strong so I don’t see any slow down.

RENO TRENDS

Home renovation trends are ever-changing. Renovations that might have been de rigueur 20 years ago may seem dated now. Recognizing the potentially popular trends of tomorrow is a great way for homeowners to give their homes a fresh new look and put themselves in position to capitalize on popular trends when they put their homes on the market. That’s especially so after 2020, a year when millions of people spent more time at home than ever before. All that time working from home and relaxing at home gave millions of homeowners ideas about what they like about their homes and what they hope to change. The following are some renovation trends that various experts suspect could emerge in 2021.

Eco-friendly living Climate change, and how to combat it, was a hot button issue during the 2020 presidential election in the United States. So it should come as no surprise that urdesignmag.com, a web magazine that showcases creative trends in design, architecture, art, technology, and fashion, predicts that eco-friendly living solutions figure to be hot commodities in 2021. Eco-friendly appliances, furniture and designs can help to conserve energy and reduce waste, which environmentalists and government agencies like the Environmental Protection Agency note are two critical components in the fight against climate change.

Large windows Large windows can provide stunning views of the outdoors and allow ample natural light into a home. It may not be a coincidence if

large windows prove to be a hot trend in 2021. The COVID-19 pandemic that dominated much of 2020 forced many people to spend considerably more time at home. Darker homes without much natural light can adversely affect mood, especially when people are spending more time at home. HGTV predicts that homeowners will seek ways to bring more natural light into their homes in 2021, and large windows naturally brighten homes while making rooms appear bigger, helping people feel less cramped. That’s an especially beneficial characteristic when spending more time indoors at home.

Minimalism The anticipated popularity of minimalism in 2021 may also be connected to the pandemic. As professionals were forced to work from home and many families spent more time together inside their homes then ever before, they may have recognized a need to cut back on clutter, including extra furniture. A minimalist approach is both simple and clean, which can make homes feel less claustrophobic.

Multi-functional spaces Homeowners asked a lot of their homes in 2020, as rooms were transformed into multi-functional spaces seemingly overnight. HGTV notes that spending more time at home showed homeowners that it may not make sense to dedicate entire rooms of a home to a single purpose. Renovations that can help homeowners transform rooms into multi-functional spaces figure to be hot commodities in the years ahead.

REASONS TO

WORK WITH AN

INTERIOR

DESIGNER CONTRIBUTED WRITER

Home is where the heart is, and it’s also where homeowners express their style. Though interior design may come naturally to some homeowners, many more can benefit from a little help defining their style and translating that style into a beautiful home. In such instances, interior designers can be the most valuable investments homeowners make in their homes. Homeowners may hear “interior designer” and immediately hear the sound of cash registers ringing in their heads. However, many interior designers offer various services, including hourly consultations, that can make them cost-effective, especially for homeowners who are still trying to define their style and decide just how they want their homes to look. That’s just one of the many benefits of working with interior design professionals.

Interior designers can save homeowners money Much like it’s best for homeowners with no DIY experience to hire professional contractors when renovating their homes, paying an interior designer when you have little experience with design can help you avoid potentially costly mistakes. Interior designers are skilled at transforming homeowners’ visions into finished products, and that’s a valuable skill homeowners don’t necessarily have. Trial and error when designing a home’s interior can be costly, even if you’re not knocking down any walls or swinging any hammers. For example, after renovating on their own, homeowners may find they need to replace a new couch or dining table that they realize contradicts their design scheme. Interior designers can help homeowners avoid such costly mistakes and get it right the first time.

Interior designers can help you coordinate your style Each and every component of a home’s interior says something about its owner. Whether it’s their choice of lighting fixtures, furniture or even appliances, homeowners make a statement any time they choose a design component for their homes. Interior designers can help homeowners coordinate their styles so each room seamlessly transitions to the next one. An ultra-modern living room may stick out like a sore thumb in a home that’s predominantly rustic, and interior designers can help homeowners avoid such mistakes.

Interior designers recognize what’s trending Interior designers tend to be up-to-date on the latest trends. ORGANIZE A HOME OFFICE CONTRIBUTED WRITER

According to Stanford economist Nicholas Bloom, as of summer 2020, 42 percent of the United States labor force was working from home full-time. Many people have retrofitted various spaces around their homes into areas to get work done. More organized home work spaces can increase productivity. Individuals can follow these guidelines to create effective, organized home offices.

Begin with the desk The desk is the primary spot where work will take place. The right desk accessories can provide visual appeal and also serve practical purposes. Have cups for holding pens and pencils, baskets and bins for larger items, and store whatever you can elsewhere so it does not lead to clutter on the desk. Store wireless printers in a cabinet or even on a bookshelf so it doesn’t take up real estate on the desk.

Create a printing station While you’re moving that wireless printer elsewhere, designate a space to serve as the central printing hub. This way children who need to print assignments for school will know where to go as well. Printer supplies like extra ink cartridges and printer paper can be kept in decorative storage boxes nearby.

Increase your shelving Shelving can help keep items organized and off the desk in home offices without closets or drawers. Look for shelves that blend in with decor but are sturdy enough to be functional.

Organize paperwork Figure out a system that works for you to help tidy up papers you choose to save. While some papers can be scanned and stored as digital files, color-coded file folders can organize statements and other important documents. This makes it easy to find the folder you need when looking for certain documents.

Establish a charging station Repurpose certain items, such as a desk organizer, into an easily accessible electronics charging station where phones and tablets can charge at one time.

Make essential binders HGTV suggests making binders that can store the most important papers for easy access — even in an emergency. Set up a binder for automotive paperwork, including repair receipts, a medical binder where key medical records are kept, a binder for device manuals, and one for financial planning documents.

CREATE YOUR OWN EMERGENCY BINDER TIPS VIA FEMA When disaster strikes, your immediate concern will be your safety and the safety of those you care about. Once the immediate danger passes, however, having your financial and medical records and important contact information will be crucial to help you start the recovery process quickly. Taking time now to safeguard these critical documents will give you peace of mind and ensure you have access to essential information during the difficult days following a disaster. WAYS TO PROTECT Many people choose to use a combination of storage options for important documents to maximize security, protection, and ease of access. Options include: safe deposit boxes, at-home storage options such as fireproof and waterproof safes, and online document storage. FEMA recommends storing electronic copies in a password-protected format on a removable flash drive or external hard drive. WHAT TO PROTECT Household

STORM SAFETY KEEP YOUR FAMILY AND HOME SAFE CONTRIBUTED WRITER The tristate area is no stranger when it comes to severe weather or tornadic activity. Make sure you don’t miss a beat during a power outage or home damage this storm season.

Invest in a generator A power generator may prove a wor thwhile investment. Generators come in two basic types. A portable generator can be rolled into place and uses gasoline as fuel. Keep these generators outside and dr y. A whole-house generator can be hard-wired to a home’s electrical system and automatically engage should a power outage occur.

Prepare in advance In anticipation of a power outage, stock up on battery-powered devices like flashlights, lanterns and radios. Charge mobile phones and other devices so they’re at 100 percent power. Keep refrigerators and freezers closed as much as possible. Maintain a cache of nonperishable food and plan to use any perishable items that are in the refrigerator first. A refrigerator can keep food cold for about four hours after power has ceased, states Ready.gov, while a freezer can keep the temperature for about 48 hours if full. Packing these appliances with ice or frozen bottles of water can help.

During a power outage Report the power outage to the power company if it seems localized; otherwise, wait for updates to see who is affected. Try to remain cool or warm if the HVAC system is not functioning. Pool resources by having everyone in the family gather in one room of the house. Older adults and children are especially vulnerable to extreme temperatures. Maintain food supplies that do not require refrigeration, including two gallons of bottled water per individual. People who take refrigerated medications should only ingest drugs that have been at room temperature until a new supply is available, advises the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Power outages routinely occur and require planning and safety precautions until power is restored. It’s recommended that you shut of f all natural gas, propane tanks and electrical power to avoid fire or electrocution, the CDC cautioned. If the smell of gas is present and you suspect a leak,

24 NEWBURGH MAGAZINE 2021 Second Quarter

turn off the main gas valve and leave the house immediately. The CDC recommends these additional post-tornado safety precautions to keep in mind: • Wear sturdy shoes or boots, long sleeves and gloves when handling or walking on or near debris. • Look out for exposed nails and broken glass. • Don’t touch downed power lines or objects in contact with them, and report electrical hazards to the police and utility company. If you smell natural gas or hear any hissing sounds, you may have a gas leak. You should open a window and leave the premises immediately. Turn off the gas at the outside main valve if you can and call the gas company from a neighbor’s home. If you turn off the gas for any reason, it must be turned back on by a professional. If you see sparks or broken or frayed wires, or if you smell hot insulation, turn off the electricity at the main fuse box or circuit breaker. If you have to step in water to get to the fuse box or circuit breaker, call an electrician first for advice. If you suspect sewage lines are damaged, avoid using toilets and call a plumber. If water pipes are damaged, contact the water company and avoid using water from the tap. You can obtain safe water by melting ice cubes.

After a power outage Toss foods that have been exposed to temps of 40 degrees or higher for two hours or more. Inspect all food for unusual odor, color or texture. When in doubt, throw it out. Make sure to take pictures of before, during, and after clean-up. Document any damaged valuables you find, and take pictures of all damage to the interior or exterior of the home before any repairs are done. These will all bode well for you during an insurance claim. You should immediately call an agent and report that a storm came through the area and your house is one that is damaged. In instances of tornados or severe weather, they may already be prepared for the influx of calls for insurance claims. You should find out how long it will take to get an inspection and file a claim. In order to be safe, you need to make some proper repairs that would cause immediate danger to you or your family. Clear these with your insurance company as you should be able to include these into your filed claim.

POST-DISASTER CLEAN-UP REMOVE ANY WATER – If your basement or house has flooded, the first thing to do is extract the water. Your sump pump should be able to

do its job, make sure if you lost power that it has a backup power source or backup battery. Make sure any drains are clear of debris then call a local professional clean up of the water damage to prevent mold growth. KEEP AIR CIRCULATING – Open vents and windows and set up a fan to keep fresh air circulating. Run a dehumidifier in the basement and any room that had water damage. Mold and mildew can start growing within 48 hours, so the faster water is cleaned up and everything dries, the better. REMOVE WET DRYWALL – If your drywall gets wet, there is no chance to dry it out, that portion has to be removed and replaced. It holds too high of a potential for mold if left untouched. The same goes for insulation behind the drywall. BROKEN GLASS – If windows have blown out or shattered, carefully lean up all the pieces of glass, and wear shoes whenever you are cleaning up inside your house to protect yourself. You will have to board them up until repairs can be made. Contact your local glass store or contractor for help. YARD CLEANUP – Collect large items first and put them to the curb. Use a saw or chainsaw to cut up larger pieces of wood, and rake everything else. ROOFING DAMAGE – Inspect your roof for shingles that might have come loose, blown, or have divets from hail and debris damage. Any exposed roof can cause future leaks and damage to your roof, so a consultation should be done as soon as possible for repairs. If damage if very bad, lay tarps on the roof to prevent leaks in the meantime.

SWIMMING POOL LANDSCAPING IDEAS Backyard pools provided even more convenience and a welcome respite in 2020, as many public pools were closed in response to social distancing restrictions put in place during the pandemic. After installing pools, many homeowners realize that touching up the landscaping around the pool can provide the finishing touch to their backyard retreats. Not all landscaping is the same, and homeowners should choose plants that look beautiful, are tolerant to pool splash-out and won’t outgrow the area. The home and garden resource The Spruce notes that a plant that is attractive at two feet tall can grow rapidly and drop leaves or other debris into the pool. KEEP THESE CONSIDERATIONS IN MIND: • Choose plants that will provide privacy. • Know which kind of climate a plant needs prior to purchasing it. Tropical plants may be fitting poolside, but will they endure when the season is over? • Design according to the theme of the home, as plants should complement the existing style. Modern foliage may not blend well with a home styled after a traditional English cottage. • Decide whether you can accept spreading or trailing plants that can cascade over retaining walls and other infrastructure. • Look at trees that won’t drop too many leaves, flowers or fruit into the water. • Think about having layers of plants to soften the landscape, which can make a small pool seem bigger and more luxurious, indicates the landscaping company Earth Development, Inc. • Don’t overlook the possibility of a lawn abutting pavers or concrete surrounding a pool, as it can soften the edges and keep spaces open and inviting. • Herbs or fragrant plants can transform a pool day into a spa experience. Consider low-maintenance lavender as an option.

STAY SAFE WHEN WORKING OUTSIDE CONTRIBUTED WRITER

mowing the lawn with a riding mower. Adhere to manufacturers’ recommendations regarding inclines to reduce tip-over accidents that can pin riders beneath the mower. Study hilly areas of the yard prior to mowing so you know which areas are safe to mow with a riding mower and which areas are best mowed with a walk-behind mower. For greater control when using a walk-behind mower on an incline, mow parallel to the slope. APPLY AND REAPPLY SUNSCREEN. Sunburns may not require trips to the emergency room, but they can still be serious. In fact, the Skin Cancer Foundation notes that sunburn is a leading cause in the majority of cases of basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and melanoma, which is the deadliest form of skin cancer. The SCF recommends applying sunscreen 30 minutes before going outside to allow the sunscreen to bond to your skin. Reapply sunscreen at least every two hours, and more often if you’re sweating excessively. The SCF recommends broad spectrum sunscreens, which protect the skin from both UVA and UVB rays. Though a product with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 15 is acceptable when walking the dog or driving to work, the SCF advises using a product with an SPF of 30 or higher when engaging in extended outdoor activities like gardening or mowing. EMPLOY THE BUDDY SYSTEM. Use the buddy system when pruning tall trees or performing any tasks that require a ladder. The Orthopedic Institute of Pennsylvania reports that more than 164,000 people are injured each year falling off a ladder. Ask a significant other or neighbor to hold the ladder in place while you climb up to reduce your risk of falling. If cutting large branches, cut them piecemeal to reduce the risk of being injured by heavy falling branches. INSPECT THE PROPERTY FOR INSECT

A day spent working in the yard or garden is an ideal way to pass the time on spring and summer afternoons. A pristine landscape can add value to a proper ty and instill pride in homeowners who put a lot of thought and effort into their lawns. And maintaining a garden can feel like a part-time job. A sun-soaked day can make it easy to overlook potential threats when working in a lawn or garden. But safety precautions are of the utmost necessity when working in the yard, where the risk for

serious injur y is considerable. For example, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons reports that, in 2016, more than 90,000 patients, including nearly 5,000 children, were treated in hospital emergency rooms for lawn mower-related injuries. KNOW YOUR TERRAIN BEFORE MOWING. Knowing the terrain in your own yard can reduce the risk for accident or injury. This can be especially important when

HIVES. The OIP notes that the most common insect stings in spring come from bees, wasps and hornets. Homeowners who are not careful can inadvertently come across hives when doing spring cleanup, making them vulnerable to bites and stings. That can be ver y dangerous for anyone, and especially so for people with a histor y of allergic reactions to insect bites or stings. Inspect areas where you’ll be working to make sure insects haven’t put down roots in your property. If you discover any hives and are hesitant to remove them on your own, contact a local landscaping firm.

LOW-MAINTENANCE LAWNS HOW TO ADDRESS

MOSS IN THE LAWN Lawn care can be a labor of love. Maintaining a pristine lawn is no small task, but it’s one that many homeowners proudly take on, knowing that all the hard work and time spent outside on sunny summer afternoons is well worth the sweat equity. After putting in so much effort to create a lush, green lawn, it’s understandable if homeowners react with disbelief when something threatens the health of their turf. Moss is one such threat. Recognizing the threat moss poses is the first step to corralling it before it overtakes a lawn. EXPLAINING MOSS Moss can be especially menacing because its green appearance allows it to blend in with grass rather easily. As moss spreads, it becomes more noticeable. According to the turf A traditional lawn may not be right for every property nor desired by every homeowner. There is no denying that lawns take time and effort to establish and daily or weekly maintenance to thrive. Homeowners who find that a traditional lawn is not practical can explore some low-maintenance alternatives.

Wildflower meadow Homeowners with wide swaths of property may discover meadows are cost- and time-efficient. Stores sell special wildflower meadow mixes of seeds or homeowners can use wildflower plug plants throughout areas where grasses are left to grow longer. This natural area can be a home to wildlife and an idyllic backdrop to a home. Most meadows only require a spring or summer and autumn cut to thrive and look good.

Gravel Stone and gravel areas can reduce maintenance in the landscape and require very little upkeep. When gravel is installed correctly, weeds may not grow readily. Gravel installation may include laying heavy-duty, semi-permeable landscape fabric, which is available in home improvement centers. Gravel is cheaper than pavers and can be just as beautiful.

Moss Moss can thrive in shady areas and ones where the soil tends to stay a bit damp. Moss is velvety soft and green, so it can mimic the look of a traditional lawn but won’t require mowing and other upkeep. Because it spreads quickly, moss can take over quite rapidly. You will need to protect areas where you do not want moss by creating barriers to stop spread.

Ornamental grasses

care experts at Scotts®, moss is a plant with shallow roots that spreads by spores and root-like structures called rhizoids. Moss is opportunistic, and it will grow where turfgrass is thin and weak. However, moss does not kill the grass. Rather, the conditions that promote the growth of moss can kill the grass. Such conditions may include compacted soil or excessive thatch, acidic or infertile soil, excessive shade, and insufficient or excessive watering. HOW CAN MOSS BE CONTROLLED? Penn State Extension notes that the first step to controlling

Partition areas of the property for ornamental grasses to grow. The gardening resource Elemental Green says ornamental grasses tend to be drought-resistant and low-maintenance. They won’t need much fertilizer and are often resistant to pests as well. Ornamental grasses grow in tufts or sprays and will not require mowing. However, they are not ideal for areas that get foot traffic.

and available at most home renovation stores. Test results will reveal if the soil is lacking nutrients or if lime needs to be applied and when to apply it. Such a report also will indicate when to fertilize the lawn, which can help restore the turfgrass so it’s more capable of competing with the moss. If the underlying cause of moss is shade and/or moisture in the yard, homeowners can speak with landscaping professionals to discuss their options. to shade and/or moisture may prevent mold from overtaking the lawn in the future. Penn State Extension notes that some turfgrasses may be bestadapted to shaded, well-drained soils, while others may be more likely to thrive in shaded, moist soils.

3 TECHNIQUES TO KEEP MOSQUITOES OUT OF YOUR BACKYARD OASIS The value of a retreat-like backyard was never more apparent than in 2020. Over the last year-plus, much of the world has been forced to stay home as a global pandemic has claimed millions of lives while countless others have had to fight to survive in hospitals. It’s no surprise people have looked for a respite from the harsh realities of living during a deadly pandemic, and many turned their attention to their own backyards to provide such an escape. The online home remodeling platform Houzz reported a 58 percent annual increase in project leads for home professionals in June 2020. Contractors who specialize in outdoor spaces saw the biggest increase in demand. A revamped outdoor space can provide the perfect retreat for homeowners who want to get away from it all. But one winged, unwelcome guest can quickly transform an oasis into an uninviting space. Mosquitoes make their presence felt in many areas each summer. These pesky, often hungr y insects can carr y disease, and their bites can be painful and itchy. Homeowners can try these three techniques to keep mosquitoes out of their backyards.

REMOVE STANDING WATER Standing water is a breeding ground for mosquitoes, who don’t even need a lot of water to successfully breed. A daily walk around the property may uncover kids’ toys, empty flower pots or other small receptacles that can collect water. Even clogged gutters can lead to the accumulation of a small amount of water, and that can be enough for mosquitoes to breed. Remove these potential breeding grounds when you find them, and do so each day, as mosquitoes mature from eggs to nymphs in roughly four days.

MOW REGULARLY Mowing the lawn so the grass never gets too high is another way to make a backyard less hospitable to mosquitoes. The pest experts at Terminix® note that mosquitoes seek tall grass to protect them from the elements, including wind and hot summer sun. Mowing enough so grass never gets too high in summer can make backyards less inviting to mosquitoes.

PLANT WITH MOSQUITOES IN MIND The home remodeling experts at HGTV note that plants can be part of homeowners’ strategy to repel mosquitoes. Various plants have mosquito-repellant qualities. For example, bee balm releases a fragrance as it grows, and mosquitoes don’t like that fragrance. Homeowners can speak with a local lawn and garden professional for recommendations about plants that can thrive in their region and repel mosquitoes at the same time.
