“Your sense of space comes from what you feel, not just what you see.” “What gives a space character has a lot to do with the textures: here we have the brick wall, the glass tile in the backsplash, the wood floor, the cabinetry. The neutral palette provides softness that works beautifully with these bold, earthy textures, and acts as a backdrop for everything else.” Mary Jo Peterson, CKD, CBD, CAPS, is an award-winning designer and owner of a Connecticut-based design firm.

D R A D N A T S G N I T H THE LIG Garrison: Mid-Century-esque glamour modernized for today’s discerning tastes... this gorgeous “art piece” is hand-crafted with quality, high-end materials and accented in old bronze or polished nickel. talking points. I was recently asked to give a presentation to a group of Boston designers; the topic was mine to choose. Hmm, what to discuss for the hour? I don’t subscribe to design trends, per se, so that was off my list. Art in the home? Too subjective. Color theory? Been there, done that. I had just returned from Marrakech and the Milan Furniture Fair (destinations where creativity flourishes), so my desire was to spur ideas and discuss how to stay curious and excited by design. I adore conversing with designers and artisans who are enthused by what they do. So, my talk began with the subject of PASSION. I know a ton of industry pros whose fierce energy is downright infectious: Jamie Drake, a fervent designer and master colorist. Jiun Ho, who approaches his interiors and furniture collection with great zeal. Clodagh, a one-word wonder, whose work is both mindful and holistic. The list goes on and on… Next, I delved into IMAGINATION. There are endless ways for designers, and homeowners for that matter, to be inspired. Travel! Take a garden tour! Visit a museum! Pin images on Pinterest! Download Instagram! And please, let’s not forget flipping through the pages of design magazines. My talk concluded with the matter of DESIGN, for it’s the creative process—the sketching, the shopping, the installation—that interests me most. What you see on our pages is the end result. Yet getting there, with passion, imagination and design, is where the real thrill lies.

PASSION, IMAGINATION, DESIGN Exciting fabric hanging in Dedar’s Milan showroom; a beautifully designed riad in Marrakech; an imaginatively attired Moroccan woman.

GLOBAL SATURATION With his recently launched collection for Duralee, textile designer John Robshaw has penned a passionate love letter to the vibrant personalities, exotic locales and indelible encounters he’s experienced on his travels across the Asian continent. Diving headfirst into this latest venture—which includes his inaugural foray into woven designs—Robshaw has scribed an arresting quartet of colorways, from the earthy and engaging tones that thread themselves through Charcoal/Moss Green and the dramatic dyes found in Indigo/Turquoise, to the boldly saturated hues of Madder/Coral and quietly sophisticated shades expressed in Umber/Khaki. The fabrics’ colors, prints and textures are imbued with Robshaw’s inquisitive, adventurous spirit, and speak to venerated traditional techniques and diverse cultural histories. “My work has always had a strong artsy-ethnic bent,” says Robshaw. “This collection really articulates that small-batch, hand-loomed and -blocked prints vibe.” duralee.com; johnrobshaw.com

INDUSTRIAL ELEMENTS Renowned architecture outfit Marmol Radziner has taken its modernist, sustainably minded approach to design and applied it to jewelry. Spare of material and form, the simplicity of the commercial-grade brass and bronze rings, pendants and bracelets—forged in the same studio where the firm’s architectural models and details are made—reflect a purity of style embraced by design principal Ron Radziner. shop.marmol-radziner.com

Furthering the work of its late namesake founder, Donghia continues to push the design envelope with new offerings that are at once innovative yet classic. To wit: the Acadia end table, designed by Joseph Jeup with a glass top and starburst pattern wood shelf; the geometric Forma table, shown here clustered into a larger configuration; and the 12-arm, smoked Murano glass Fontana chandelier. donghia.com

SUGAR RUSH With a name like Candy, Studio Roeper’s newly introduced coffee table is definitely all parts sweet. Whipped up using a combination of components, including 83 sheets of silver leaf, a quart of crystal clear epoxy, black lacquer and two sumptuous hides from Edelman Leather, the curvy, eye-catching piece is a departure from the mostly linear offerings of the brand. “The leather on this table dictated the form, as it begged to be stretched around something with a bend,” says company founder and senior craftsman Florian Roeper. “A cylinder was not very compelling to me, so I opted for a teardrop shape. It is powerful and dynamic, yet calm; it’s like a glossy, sweet treat, carefully wrapped and ready to be consumed.” studioroeper.com

Continuing its mission of forging forward-thinking collaborations with some of the design world’s most intriguing on-the-cusp as well as established tastemakers, French powerhouse Ligne Roset debuts Oushak, a delicious hand-tufted wool rug available in 49 different colors on a creamy beige background (orange is shown). Created by German designer, artist and theater director Carmen Stallbaumer and unveiled this year at international furniture fairs IMM Cologne and Maison & Objet, the rug’s design—like all of her work, Stallbaumer says—was driven by a search for individuality, function, sensuality and joie de vivre in the everyday, and joins her earlier pieces for the brand, which include the Alambra pillow, Slats chest and Zoom rug. ligne-roset-usa.com

HAUTE HEELS Just when we thought fashion couldn’t get any more forward, Prada revs up its repertoire and releases its spring 2012 line of fabulously eccentric women’s clothing, accessories and shoes. Like the rest of its fleet, the glossy leather example shown here—though it wears a delicately feminine touch of floral detailing—gives a macho nod to the hot rods of the 1950s with its flame-shaped straps, chrome fin-like heel and playful brake light. Surely the collection’s cool quotient will convince men everywhere that women really do need an obscene amount of shoes. prada.com

Designer and shop owner Megan Winters, surrounded by sketches and inspirational objects in her Lake Forest studio. Opposite: A delicate vignette from French textile designer Carolyn Quartermaine. Winters names her as someone with whom she’d love to work.

“I was born to do this,” asserts Megan Winters, chief creative officer, designer and co-owner of Megan Winters Atelier and Maison in Lake Forest. “It’s in my blood, heart and soul; it’s my entire being.” Inspired by the artistry of fashion and the grandeur of France and the neoclassical period, Winters, a

former investment banker and packaging executive, launched her eponymous design studio and boutique in the fall of 2011 at the urging of friends. Challenging her clients and herself to create, live and shop with a vivacious abandonment, she forsakes trends in favor of rich colors, luxurious materials and styles with inherent purpose. “My work evolves with the industry but certainly doesn’t depend on the latest ‘anything’ for success,” she explains. Brimming with the perfect balance of must-have goodies and unique heirlooms, Maison is filled with custom-designed furniture, new and antique art, lighting, floorcoverings and accessories. “I import lots of pieces from Europe that are one-of-a-kind, found items,” says Winters. “I think that’s what helps make the shop so special.” meganwinters.com; 847.295.1675

THOUGHTFUL ABANDON

MEGAN WINTERS My work is… Fearless, modern and glamorous; playful sophisticate meets eternal optimist.

Design icons: Coco Chanel and Karl Lagerfeld; Ralph Lauren for his timelessness and broad range of gorgeousness; and Yves Saint Laurent, Lanvin and Céline. I’ve also recently come to love Belgian designer Natan for his simple yet couture-like shapes.

Favorite decorating sources: I love Mecox Gardens because their mix is eclectic, timeless and chic all at once. I also adore Hollyhock, Moss, Carolyne Roehm and, of course, the Paris auctions and flea markets.

Keep an eye on: Kathryn McCoy is absolutely amazing. She takes stones like agate, crystal and quartz to facet the most spectacular boxes I’ve ever seen.

“I love to inspire people,” says whirlwind event planner Lulu Powers, who gets a big kick out of passing on the creative torch. “If you can teach someone to do something—and give them the confidence to do it—that’s great.” Opposite: A tablescape from a recent Powers-fueled event.

“Fun, colorful and chic.” They’re three words Los Angeles caterer and event planner Lulu Powers uses to describe her work and—as you’ll realize after spending just one minute with her—they’re a spot-on characterization of the woman herself. A bundle of creative energy, Powers always has a wealth of ideas on tap that she is quick to share with her clientele when dreaming up their latest fête. She gets it, she says, from “my parents, and especially my mom. She has an almost instinctual knack for tablescapes; she can

LULU POWERS I got started… As a private chef when I was 15. I was working for cookbook author Sarah Leah Chase, who had a fantastic takeout shop on Nantucket (I spent my summers there), and when a client told her he needed a chef, she said, “Oh, one of those Powers girls can do it.”

Greatest influences: My mother and father, definitely. They were both really good cooks and incredible hosts, and they taught me that nothing you do in the kitchen is wrong. My mom always says, “Fear is like fire—you either cook with it or you let it burn you.” Can you imagine?

Favorite color: I love orange! It’s cheerful and goes with just about everything.

Go-to host gift: Either a batch of cookies, some new food product I’ve found that I can’t live without—I’ve just discovered a great nonalcoholic beverage called 12NtM that you can mix with practically anything—or Peter Luger steak sauce. LUXE INTERIORS

“I love the physicality of the glassblowing process,” says artist Tracy Glover, shown here at the Cliff Young showroom in New York. “You’re skirting danger, depending on how things go.” Opposite: A detail shot of Silver Lining, a new pendant Glover debuted at ICFF. The colors were inspired, she says, by the work of John Constable and J.M.W. Turner.

It was a grainy black-and-white photograph in a college catalog that changed Tracy Glover’s life. An architecture student at the time, Glover was searching for something more immediate than the years-long commitment it could take to see her work realized. “So, I was considering a switch to art school,” she recalls. “When I came across that picture of someone blowing glass—it was so industrial and physical looking—I just had to try it.” Try it she did, and fell in love with the craft. “As I spent time with the material, I became

even more enamored of the reflective properties of glass, and of how colors overlap to create new ones.” Today, Glover, an avid oarsman, rises most days before dawn to slice her way through the water before heading to her Pawtucket, Rhode Island, studio, communing with her surroundings and taking mental snapshots of what she sees, much of which informs her work. “I watch light moving on the water and the bubbles generated in my wake,” says Glover, “and I think about how those visual effects can be translated into glass.” tracygloverstudio.com; 401.724.1100

SMOKE ON THE WATER

TR ACY GLOVER What’s inspiring you now? My husband and I recently bought a 1910 bungalow near the water, and the lack of light fixtures has led to a new collection of sconces and a pendant, Silver Lining, that debuted at the International Contemporary Furniture Fair.

How did you start rowing? I turned 30 and tried it as a lark, and I loved it so much that I kept going. The rowing community here in Rhode Island is small but varied. We have chefs at four-star restaurants, educators at Brown University and RISD, nurses...it’s a really creative, interesting group of people, and rowing is a great way to start my day.

Design icons: My mother is Finnish, so we had a lot of Scandinavian design in our house, like Marimekko and Iittala glass. I think the Finns use color in a very playful way that works with the simplicity of their designs.

I just read… Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, by Ransom Riggs. The way the author used vintage photographs to help tell the story was very clever. LUXE INTERIORS

MAIN COURSE IT USED TO BE THAT THE KITCHEN WAS A NECESSARY EVIL, A UTILITARIAN VEHICLE TO PRODUCE FAMILY DINNERS AND HOLIDAY MEALS. IN HOMES TODAY, THOUGH, THE KITCHEN IS THE MAIN ATTRACTION AS TRENDS TOWARD OPEN LAYOUTS POSITION THE SPACE AS THEIR STAR.

OPEN CALLS Just like an occasional argument is necessary to strengthen a relationship by creating a situation where compromise can flourish, the same is true with design. This elegant kitchen in Seattle is the perfect example of how two varying viewpoints can result in a unified vision that transcends both of the original ideas. Architects Amy Janof and Helen Hald served as mediators for a husband and wife who were after an “industrial look” and a “warm, feminine aesthetic,” respectively. “We worked very closely with them,” says Janof. “They weren’t in total agreement at the beginning of the project, but we were able to meld together what they both wanted—an industrial, raw ceiling and black-paned windows for the husband and a pretty Ochre chandelier and beautiful Calacatta marble countertops for the wife.” The result is a space at the heart of the home’s open floor plan that combines sleek, modern design with retro sensibilities to great effect.

“The kitchen was designed by thinking about how it was going to be used and how each activity was going to look while it was going on.”

Amy Janof, Janof Hald Architecture Seattle, WA

POINT OF VIEW IT WAS TRUE, FOR A LONG TIME, THAT THE ONLY WATER VIEWS YOU GOT WHILE IN THE BATHROOM WERE WHEN THE TUB WAS FULL. TODAY, HOWEVER, LARGER LAYOUTS AND OPENING UP THE SPACE TO THE OUTDOORS ESTABLISH A SPECIAL COMMUNION WITH THE OUTSIDE WORLD.

ON LOCATION Though the homeowners of a newly constructed modern gem could have chosen to build their family retreat anywhere, they chose Montauk, New York, with its unpredictable weather but gorgeous landscape. In fact, their love of the sleepy, seaside town is such that it became the basis for everything architect Paul Masi incorporated into his ambitious design. No place in the home, though, is a better homage to the location than the master bathroom—with its sliding pocket doors that open to a deck with stunning water views on one end of the room and an outdoor shower that encourages moonlight reverie on the other. “Everything we did was in an effort to pick up on cues they loved so much about the area,” explains Masi. “The colors we used are ones that show up on the beach here; we even steamed the floor and spent a lot of time developing a salt solution to patina the ceiling to get it the perfect color of driftwood.”

“Homeowners should create a hierarchy of how they want to live and what’s most important to them and distill it all into simple, strong ideas.” Paul Masi, Bates Masi Architects LLC Sag Harbor, NY

DRILL, BABY, DRILL FOR MORE THAN 25 YEARS, JABLONSKI ASSOCIATES, WHICH IS BASED IN NEW CANAAN, CONNECTICUT, HAS BEEN BUILDING PREMIER CUSTOM HOMES. JEREMI JABLONSKI, OWNER AND PRESIDENT OF THE AWARD-WINNING FIRM, HAS BECOME AN ADVOCATE OF THE ENERGY STAR CERTIFICATION PROGRAM, WHICH BENEFITS CLIENTS AND THE ENVIRONMENT.

What is a Home Energy Rating System (HERS)?

How does the geothermal system work?

HERS is a national standard for measuring the efficiency of a home similar to the mile-per-gallon rating for a car. The rating quantifies the energy performance of a home, so it is easy to compare the stats from different homes. A HERS index of 100 is what a standard built-to-code new home would score, while a net-zero energy home would score 0, and older, poorly built homes could have a rating of more than 150. So, much like golf, the lower the number, the better.

We tap the earth’s energy by drilling wells that are 450 to 550 feet deep and connect them to a heat pump. In the winter, the pump pulls heat from the ground, and in the summer, it pushes heat back underground. The pump also provides hot water to the house. There is a backup boiler, either oil or propane, that is used in the case of emergencies or moderate temperatures when the pump isn’t heating or cooling the house.

How does the home get its HERS score? A certified energy auditor, called a rater, examines construction plans to identify the efficiency of proposed insulation, windows, heating and cooling equipment, wall-to-window ratios and other aspects affecting the performance of the house. The rater then conducts an on-site inspection and performs a blower door test that measures the leakiness of the house. The final report includes not only the HERS rating but also the home’s annual energy cost estimate.

Jeremi Jablonski may often be smiling, but he is very serious about making geothermal HVAC systems a cornerstone of each project.

How does HERS fit in with the Energy Star rating? ENERGY STAR is a government-backed program whose strict guidelines for energy efficiency are set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Homes with a HERS rating of 85 or less qualify for an ENERGY STAR certificate. The certificate is used in determining eligibility for many programs, including local and federal tax credits.

Is HERS restricted to new homes? No. We have introduced this program to all major renovation projects. It is very exciting to restore a vintage house and to see the HERS ratings coming very close to the numbers you would expect in new construction.

How much does a geothermal system cost? It is a little more costly to install than a conventional heating and cooling system because you have to drill wells, but the U.S. Department of Energy recognizes the geothermal heating and cooling system as the most efficient technology available and gives a 30 percent tax credit for installation.

Is this the technology of the future? No, this is the technology of today! At Jablonski Associates, we believe that geothermal will soon become a standard installation in most new homes and renovations. We are

How can you lower a home’s HERS rating?

excited to offer this technology to our clients because

Foam insulation, energy-efficient windows and converting to a geothermal energy system for heating and cooling are key.

we are saving money, saving the environment from fuel emission and also teaching our kids to live responsibly.

LEFT: This 1907 Greenwich, Connecticut home underwent a complete renovation and received an ENERGY STAR certification with a HERS index rating of 49. ABOVE: The ENERGY STAR rating should be a starting point for any discussion about energy efficiency. We use it as a great performance-measuring tool. Homes built under the ENERGY STAR certification program provide the owners not only with low running costs but also with significant tax incentives.

PORTRAIT: JONATHAN BECKERMAN.

It’s fitting that the doyenne of sustainable interior design, who goes by a singular moniker, was named after a picturesque river in Ireland. Like the natural resource, Irish-born Clodagh has a spiritual, down-to-earth manner; she gushes when the subject turns to mindful environmental designs. “In order to create authentic design, every material should be environmentally conscious, interesting, tactile and unpredictable,” she says. “And I should know where it comes from.” Clodagh practices what she preaches: feng shui, integrative medicine, a vegan diet and giving back to communities. The sybaritic spaces she designs—spas, residences, hotels—are intended to “heal the spirit” through peace, balance and harmony. They’re also incredibly stylish. Over the course of her nearly 30-year career, the prolific designer has created textiles, furniture, lighting and accessories (a sampling shown here) for some of the biggest brands in the business; each piece integrated with beauty, utility and sustainability. When it comes to the latest offerings, Clodagh is most excited about the next generation of lithium-ion batteries. “They are safer and greener than other batteries on the market, and run longer, last longer and charge faster.” clodagh.com

“We try to make every project LEED certified because that is the language we speak.”

“Not knowing all the rules can be a huge advantage,” states Ted Flato, half of the architectural power team that is Lake|Flato Architects. David Lake and Flato always knew they wanted to make an impact on their field but were blindsided by the enormous success they achieved by merely “building smart.” These native Texans firmly “believed in making longlasting buildings that result naturally in energy conservation.” Inspired by early vernacular architecture, the two quickly gravitated toward the science behind building rather than being servants to style, which led the pair to concentrate on environmental and ecological developments surrounding each project. Lake and Flato create engaging spaces that connect effortlessly to the outdoors and it is this practice that has allowed them to build their philosophy, test it and grow. Today, Lake|Flato is home to more than 65 architects, each placing collaboration on the highest pedestal. Among them is Heather Holdridge, a mechanical engineer who ensures proper execution, and partner Bob Harris, who specializes in sustainability. lakeflato.com

“I’m in paradise when people work in harmony with each other and the environment,” states New York-based furniture designer Tucker Robbins. “The essence of my work and where my heart lies is in people; I want to empower them.” Originally from Fairfield, Connecticut, and set to attend Yale, Robbins’ life instead took a different path after living with Mayan weavers for a time, and becoming inspired by the beauty of their culture. “I yearned to find a way to build bridges between disparate civilizations,” he explains about what sparked him to design sustainable and responsible furniture. The pieces he fashions from salvaged and recycled rain forest timbers reflect the world their materials came from and honor the society’s artisans and history. “It’s hard for people to imagine that an object they are receiving had a life before that point,” Robbins notes. “To bring that work to New York reminds myself and the people around me of our need for relevance in this life.” tuckerrobbins.com

L A N D S C A P E’S E N D. Los Angeles-based design firm Elysian Landscapes has broken free from indoor confinement and expanded the scope of living space into the open air. Principal designer Judy Kameon, with her talented team in tow, consistently creates compelling and sustainably conscious landscapes for discerning clientele. Case in point: This Hollywood Hills retreat reveals a rich palette of burgundy, silver and purple expressed through a myriad of deliberately chosen plants and flowers—herbaceous, coniferous perennials and succulents, just to name a few—which all require low-water maintenance; an efficient irrigation system was also installed and designed to minimize overwatering. Permeable materials like gravel and decomposed granite were used throughout the grounds for the percolation of rainwater. The property contains a sense of discovery as you happen upon intimate, tucked-away gathering areas carefully placed and dispersed throughout the garden. Elysian Landscapes managed to preserve the natural fluidity between landscape and architecture, surpassing the homeowner's challenge to incorporate a pool, fire pit, dining area and water feature. elysianlandscapes.com CLEAN VIEW DEAUVILLE BATH, $2,850; VANDABATHS.COM

Exceptional design and environmental awareness work together seamlessly at Milan’s E.c.ho. (Echo Contemporary Hotel), a locale with a flair for eco-chicness. Under the design direction of Andrea Auletta, the hotel’s stylish interiors, filled with warm colors and rich textures, employ low-energy consumption systems and smart material choices. “Our goal was to achieve an ecological look; a concept I felt I had to express through the décor,” says Auletta. And that is exactly what he did. In the lobby, fragrant cedar-log tables are made from sustainable forest wood while the conservatory sports energy-efficient glass. Thoughtful energy and organic measures extend to the hotel’s bright restaurant—Orto Green Food & Mood—where backlit murals emit light that changes to match the sun’s movement as the day progresses; adding visual interest above the dining tables, sculptural fixtures are composed of paper-thin wood leaves that form together to mimic delicate blooming flowers. As Auletta explains, “The resulting space is an ecological and contemporary hotel, where nature is king.” starhotels.com

Unquestionably one of Manhattan’s most dynamic waterfront residences—perfectly situated in Battery Park City—Riverhouse, One Rockefeller Park, boasts a reputation for its immense efforts toward meeting LEED Gold standards. The impressive 32-story condominium, of which more than 20 percent of the building’s footprint is made from recycled materials, comprising 264 luxury units was developed by the Sheldrake Organization, who recruited Polshek Partnership Architects and Ismael Leyva Architects to establish proper execution of the exterior and interior elements. The developer later enlisted the Rockwell Group to design the interior spaces with thoughtful green amenities, creating modern layouts with a sense of polished urbanity. Among the ample eco-friendly features that exist at Riverhouse are photovoltaic roof panels that convert sunlight into energy, Toto Aquia-equipped water closets, Energy Star appliances and low-pollutantemitting paints. the-riverhouse.com

LIKE THE NEARBY WASHINGTON NATIONAL CATHEDRAL , THE CRAFTSMANSHIP THAT WENT INTO THIS BALTIMORE - AREA HOME EVOKES IMAGES OF STONEMASONS , TRADE GUILDS AND ANCIENT SKILLS PASSED FROM FATHER TO SON .

But,

unlike the cathedral, it didn’t take 80-plus years to complete— though, as Baltimore designer Patrick Sutton will concede, it wasn’t exactly an overnight pop-up either. “This was a long and careful project,” he says. “Every detail was examined by the clients. As a result, it’s a very personal house.” Listening hard to his clients’ request for a substantive house, Sutton, who is also responsible for the home’s interior architecture, translated their dreams into a place filled with old-world materials and finishes— herringbone patterned floors, carved moldings, marmorino kitchen walls—things associated with the best of classic European architecture. WALKING TOUR Deep moldings, a soaring ceiling and Vaughan’s Zurich lantern add old-world charm to a hallway off the foyer. It opens into the first-floor master bedroom suite, where a leather-covered chair and two-arm wall sconce—both from Dennis & Leen—create a welcoming vignette.

Contractor Jeffrey Powers says that tasks such as installing the beamed family room ceiling and laying French limestone couldn’t be rushed. “Even the retaining walls outside were done by a mason who cut the

stone in his own yard and then brought it to the site,” explains Powers. Those handcrafted stone walls were dreamt up by landscape designer Marcel Gavrelis, who also brought in Pennsylvania boulders to anchor the planting beds. “We used stone in the gardens to transition off the fieldstone exterior,” says Gavrelis, “so it wouldn’t look like the house had dropped from the sky.” In response to the mandate for a home with substance, ceilings are twelve feet high and even the hallways are generously proportioned. As architect Judith Miller tells it, “The wife likes to walk without feeling restricted.”

RICH FLAVOR In the living room, high-gloss white moldings, curtains in Great Plains’ Rendezvous and Ebanista’s Carpello sofa in Kravet’s Openwork fabric play off dark walls painted in Benjamin Moore’s Iron Mountain. The Macau coffee table by Dennis & Leen lends texture while Donghia’s Athena Alta table lamp adds sparkle.

The lady of the house also requested curved dormers, deep overhangs and rooms with generous proportions. That meant a lot of space to fill, and Sutton saw this as an opportunity to be inspired. For one cavernous downstairs room, he created a French orangery with decorative finishes by Kelly Walker of Baltimore Artstar—the ceiling looks like it’s oxidized bronze and plaster walls are reminiscent of a 17th-century chateau. To complete the illusion, the designer chose a lovely rustic table from Patrick Sutton Home that pairs beautifully with Lee Industries’ Low Back Campaign chairs. Best of all, the orangery has turned out to be a very useful space. “It’s not a folly at all!” reports a clearly delighted Sutton. “The husband holds business meetings there all the time.” LUXE INTERIORS

OV E R W R O U G H T Designer Patrick Sutton conceptualized the iron stair railing to be consistent with the home’s old-world atmosphere, and then placed a large photo by Kendrick Moholt at the landing for modern contrast.

As parents of two teenage boys, the homeowners said they wouldn’t mind if their Continental-style manse got a little less serious at times either. “They wanted to have fun with it,” says Sutton. So, in every room he was careful to offset the more refined furnishings and finishes with whimsical touches. In the living room, a modern white glass chandelier by Christopher Guy contrasts with the cozy traditional shape of a Niermann Weeks French club chair. In the family room, where there’s a deep sofa by Ebanista, Sutton says he designed the pair of oversize wrought-iron sconces based on some fixtures he’d seen in Sardinia: “Each one consists of an array of 14 half shades that create a warm glow against the beeswaxed walls.” 160 L U X E I N T E R I O R S

Another surprise appears in the formal dining room, where not one, but two, enormous glittering Dennis & Leen crystal chandeliers hang from the ceiling. “I have a friend who says ‘anything worth doing is worth overdoing,’ ” laughs Sutton when asked about doubling up on light fixtures. The biggest dose of playfulness though, lives in the basement—where a billiards table from Adler Pool Tables sits amidst a profusion of colorful, comfortable seating. As Sutton describes it, “If you’re thirteen, it’s the hottest room in the house!” Despite the long journey, Powers says he’s extremely proud of how the project turned out. “It was a slow process, but it’s the painstaking details that make this a truly custom home.” L 164 L U X E I N T E R I O R S

spectacular Art Deco structures, the 1929 Palmolive Building (originally built as office space and converted to residences by Draper and Kramer), she used it as an opportunity to test her theory. “My two biggest inspirations are 1930s Art Deco Paris and 1960s New York. Here, I got to play them both out,” the designer says. The resulting mood is at once elegant, refined and tongue-in-cheek, with Deco’s cool polish placed alongside midcentury’s youthful zest. “Sixties and seventies furniture is quirky, a great contrast with the sophistication of Art Deco,” says Thornton. This eclectic union first appears in the living room, where graceful pieces like vintage lounge chairs and a pair of clean-lined Barbara Barry sofas mix it up with fun and flashy retro finds that include large urn-shaped Lucite lamps and a sprightly Karl Springer lacquered goatskin cocktail table. The homeowners, out-of-towners who are frequently in Chicago on business, couldn’t be more delighted with the snappy generational jumble. “What drew us to Summer is her innovative thinking,” says the wife. “We wanted to create a distinct look informed by a fresh perspective.” INTERIOR DESIGN Summer Thornton, Summer Thornton Design Inc. Thornton reports that when she inherited the project, the decorating leaned toward “heavy, dark and Southern.” Not a great stylistic match for a Chicago apartment with gorgeous lake views. Her verdict: “We need to lighten it up.” To begin, Thornton sized up her elegant “Grace Kelly” client and sensed a cooler palette of blues, greens and grays was in order. The designer covered the living room sofas in bright blue mohair velvet—Holland & Sherry’s Rive Gauche in Marlin—dressed the dining room’s wing chair backs in green-and-blue plaid— Hinson & Company’s silk tartan—and upholstered the family room’s Milo Baughman armchair in Calvin Klein’s charcoal velvet.

the lake-view setting. “All Chicagoans are oriented by the water,” says the wife. “Even when we can’t see it at night, we sense its presence. Having all of these shimmering water colors really emphasizes the lake’s beauty.” To further invite the outdoors into this urban aerie, Thornton brought in a touch of pastoral charm: horses. “I grew up on a farm,” says the homeowner, “and the horses here are really about where I came from, and they also bring our love of animals into our city life.” Art Deco design, with its arching gazelles and prowling leopards, has always been friendly to animal figures, so the stunning horse painting that dominates the family room and the vintage terra-cotta horse head peering out from the dining room wall look very much at home. So do two sparkling living room chandeliers from Vaughan that upon close examination turn out to be made entirely of crystal horseshoes.

“Summer is incredibly creative,” says her admiring client. “At one point, she was inspired by a Ralph Lauren ad; the next thing we knew it became our bedroom.” The ad in question was a woman dressed all in white with layer upon layer of rich tone-on-tone texture. Taking the ad as her touchstone for the master suite, Summer papered the walls in a soft, barely there paisley from Nina Campbell and conjured up curtain panels in Osborne & Little’s Kediri silk cotton “that look like 10 gorgeous wedding gowns,” the designer says. Once again, she furnished the room with an inspired mix: Here it’s a Deco-esque Jean de Merry mirrored glass bureau alongside Stark’s white sheepskin shag rug. “I love the way the offbeat touches enhance the look of the clean-lined furniture,” Thornton says of the home’s harmonious blend. “Each makes the other that much better.” L

“The whole concept was to

make the house look like an English country cottage that had been there for 200 years,” says architect Robin Prince Zahn, who shared that vision with interior designer Benjamin Noriega-Ortiz and general contractor Charles Cancro. Though part of the structure had been standing on the site since the 1800s, the talented team was able to transform and expand the residence—through an extensive renovation, inventive floor plan and the careful selection of furnishings and finishes—into a new house with a sense of permanence. Before its makeover, the residence stood as a neat, 3,000-square-foot clapboard structure, which the owner used as a weekend retreat. With its simple layout, cathedral-vaulted living room ceiling and aged pine floors, the house functioned perfectly for short-term visits. PANEL DISCUSSION Architect Robin Prince Zahn gave her client’s New York residence a fresh look inspired by old English cottages. Designer Benjamin NoriegaOrtiz revamped the interiors by mixing the client’s antiques with sleek contemporary pieces. Brown oak paneling and a new staircase define the entry.

Once the owner decided to move in full time, however, he wanted to add a bit more substance to the house and double its size without disturbing

the easy floor plan to which he had grown accustomed. “He liked his house,” says Zahn, who created a design that kept the same central footprint and quirky rooflines as the existing structure, but with new bedroom additions on either side, a large kitchen in the back and an entirely new aesthetic. “It was complicated, but a fun exercise.” Combining the old and new was a challenge, as was shoring up the original building. “It was timeworn and out of level,” says Cancro, “and the existing roof had so many sags in it we had to take it down completely.” He and his team rebuilt a sturdier version of the same volumes and knitted them together with the new additions. The entire structure was

sheathed in rectilinear granite stones—inspired by the stonework of local churches—and crowned with heavy slate shingles. Inside, in keeping with the English cottage sensibility, all of the window openings were replaced with turn-of-the-century steel frames, and ceiling beams were created from old barn timbers found in Vermont. “We wanted everything to be as authentic as possible,” says the architect, who referenced old books and Shingle-style homes from the 1880s to draw each detail of the house’s extensive wood paneling and trim.

The honest materiality of the architecture created a perfect backdrop for the client’s collection of antique furnishings and figurative paintings. “Our design was about making what he already had look cohesive,” says Noriega-Ortiz. “The last thing we wanted was for our furnishings to compete with his beautiful antiques.” The designer—in a stark departure from the ultramodern interiors he famously designed for the Mondrian hotel chain—brought in classic upholstered pieces, antique rugs and large-scale light fixtures to balance the dark wood of the owner’s

traditional English and sculptural Chinese antiques. “We didn’t want to have just one particular style in any one room,” he explains. “If we had English furniture, we’d mix it with Chinese and modern.” In the living room, he placed a custom camelback sofa beneath the large window and grouped it with the client’s antique Chinese low table and chairs. A massive French light fixture fills out the soaring ceiling, and leather-covered Cassina chairs provide a second sitting area. In the adjoining library, Noriega-Ortiz displayed the owner’s equestrian artwork along with a low-slung chenille-covered sofa and chairs that he designed. “We didn’t use any patterns, or chintz or stripes,” he says of the fresh look achieved through the fabric choices. “We didn’t want it to look too old, so keeping it light and monochromatic was very important.”

The client also found the pendant— a reproduction of a Chinese lantern—that hangs above the British Khaki bed in the master bedroom. “He didn’t want me to do any draperies,” says Noriega-Ortiz, “so I convinced him to do the naturallinen upholstered wall panels. It calmed the room and brought the ceiling down to a comfortable level.” In keeping with the theme of the architecture, Noriega-Ortiz aimed for a feeling of timelessness in the interiors. “The more time passes, the more the house starts to match the antiques,” he says. “That is the beauty of it. from a modestly sized space on the Upper West Side, but luckily, the tour guide is uniquely qualified for this kind of expedition: Designer Thomas Jayne’s extensive historical studies have allowed him to seamlessly blend inspirations from different cultures and eras. However, even Jayne himself wasn’t prepared for what would happen during his first meeting with his future client. ON THE HUNT Designer Thomas Jayne shopped for the accessories in the dining room the oldfashioned way: scouring some of his favorite shops. He found the two early 19thcentury vases at Bardith; the hanging James Mont collage is from Alan Moss.

projects and publications, Jayne was convinced that he had options that the homeowner could connect to in terms of inspiration, but he didn’t realize exactly how right he was. “She liked every one of our

ideas,” he explains. “So, we used them all!” After working with longtime collaborator Sarah A. Blank to knock down some walls and open up the space, and to give a much-needed facelift to the dated kitchen, Jayne began assigning different décor schemes to different rooms, weaving stories throughout the home with help from designer Marissa Stokes from his studio. Together, they mixed pieces from the owner’s extensive antiques collection—giving them a jolt with fresh finishing and upholstery—with handsome new finds, like the chandelier and porcelain vases in the tented dining room, and impressive custom pieces, like the dining table and bookcases LUXE INTERIORS

from Laszlo Sallay. “I’m not of the school that ‘everything must go’ when designing a new home,” says Jayne. “She had a lot of nice things that I might not have picked out for myself but that speak to her and have a lot of spirit. I think that’s what makes it a better apartment. It’s hers.” Jayne commissioned painter Anne Harris to bring his book-bound inspiration to life on the walls of the living room—the bright leaves and blooms that once graced the silk of an antique gown now recreated to outfit interiors instead. A portrait of Marie Antoinette from the homeowner’s collection makes a powerful statement against the playful backdrop. “It was over-the-top and fun,” says Jayne. “People are often afraid to hang things on patterned walls, but I think they actually complement each other. You have to exercise good judgment, but I think it can make the art look better.” He puts this theory into practice once more in the master bedroom with its reproduction Chinese wallpaper, with similar results. And while the designer toned it down in the library, opting for a neutral, handcrafted wallpaper and soft colors on the reupholstered sofa and the antique Persian rug underfoot, he couldn’t resist having

BOOKED SOLID The library is tame compared to some other rooms in the apartment, but still offers major design impact thanks to a hand-blocked wallpaper from Weitzner, wall sconces from Vaughan, a blue glazed table lamp from Antony Todd and an 18th-century coffee table from Florian Papp Antiques.

a bit of fun in the room, with another one of the crowning glories from the homeowner’s portraiture collection. “We made up a whole history for that piece,” Jayne laughs. “We like to tell visitors that the subject’s husband was one of the first Egyptian explorers and that he had two secret families—an Egyptian one and an English one.” And for her part, the homeowner has been having a lot of fun in her new space, too: “Thomas gave me a thoroughly livable space that’s also highly unusual and stunning. I’m very happy to live here.” L

ROOM WITH A VIEW To keep the hand-painted, scenic Chinese mural wallpaper from Gracie Studio from getting overwhelming, Jayne and Stokes toned down the rest of the master bedroom, opting for light, simple linens, a custom headboard from De Angelis Upholstery and soft blue wallto-wall wool carpeting from Beauvais Carpets.

WAS FOUNDED ON SOME VERY PRACTICAL, SOUND PRINCIPLES.

“The house itself,” says architect Raul Sotolongo, “is a box that you add layers to—balconies, porches, terraces—which create intermediate environments to the outdoors, as well as their own microclimates.” Immense windows allow for cross-ventilation, while the added porches and loggias shield those windows and the rooms beyond from harsh direct sunlight. But then there are those heavy Tara-like trappings: the carved garlands, the stepped baseboards and dentil moldings. These were an awkward fit for a Coral Gables couple in their thirties with three children ranging in age from 10 to mid-teens. Along with builder Emilio Cubero, Sotolongo had the task HOME BUILDER Emilio Cubero, Artigues & Cubero Builders ARCHITECTURE Raul Sotolongo, Sotolongo Salman Henderson Architects, LLC LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE Phil Prellezo, Philcorp Landscape BEDROOMS 5

of streamlining what he calls “a variation of a Georgian foursquare home, in which the main public spaces anchor the four corners of the house. Before ground was broken, however, Cubero had one particularly sticky problem he and Sotolongo had to tackle. The lot was basically a hammock restricted by the City of Miami in terms of what trees could and could not be cut down, and a biologist was brought in to determine that the one in the exact center of the site was not worth saving because of damage from Hurricane Andrew two decades ago.

the design of the home’s siting and structure. Inside, Cubero’s mission was matching the room envelopes to the structure’s stripped-down classicism. He collaborated with Sotolongo, he says, “to make all the baseboards, casings and window profiles less traditional.” The original stair, for instance, was carved wood. “We made it feel lighter by using iron that had a simple twist.” Richly stained wood floors throughout were also subtly interrupted at every

doorway by thresholds that were stained just a shade darker, quietly marking passage from space to space. The dĂŠcor required something equally clean, tailored and thoughtful, though low maintenance was also a priority for a busy mother with adolescent kids. The first step was to pare down the palette to black, white and gray, mixed with natural tones and textures. In her personal style, the wife favored an unadorned classic aesthetic,

while the husband, who is in finance and travels a great deal, wanted something that harked back to traditional European precedents but without the gilt and garlands. As a result, the furnishings tend to be trimmed-down French and English forms sprinkled with the occasional Asian silhouette. Case in point: In the dining room, scaled-down wingback chairs at each end of the lacquer-like table pair with glossy Chippendale-esque seating. Upholstered pieces in the living areas are covered with easy-to-maintain cottons and linens, all of them devoid of pattern. The look is enduring rather than ephemeral.

Though the home’s whole interior and exterior aesthetic appear to be effortless, challenges—like that restricted hammock—did arise. One of those tricky tasks was the pool. The wife, remembers landscape designer Phil Prellezo, specifically requested that this area resemble one of the luxurious modern Miami Beach hotels across Biscayne Bay. To achieve the effect, Cubero and Sotolongo designed a pool of pouredin-place, polished and stained concrete that matched the streamlined feel of the home’s structure and interiors without leaning too modern. It required a high level of craftsmanship but made the backyard feel at the same time contemporary and classic.

Prellezo then surrounded it and the complementing poured-in-place concrete pavers with flat lawn and mostly green plantings that

It is only in the front that things get floral, with begonia, hibiscus and Tahitian gardenia mixing into the greenscape.
