Four “Vegas” Things i’Ve neVer Done 1 Visit the Neon Boneyard: It’s

where all the great signs rest in peace, and I’ve never paid my respects.

2 Stay at Caesars Palace: The

quintessential Las Vegas hotel hasn’t had the pleasure of me in residence.

3 See a Drive-in Movie: There

is a super cool drive-in out in North Las Vegas. I hope to catch a flick there before it disappears.

2 Find the Underground House:

It’s out there somewhere, a fully modern home, below ground, built in the 1960s and completely state-of-the-art.

Believe it or not there are still many things in Las Vegas I’ve never experienced due to the simple fact that there are not enough hours in the day. Such is the saga of a city that offers so much and a girl who just can’t be everywhere at once. Granted most of the places I haven’t been are somewhat obscure—with a few restaurants and shows thrown in. However, recently I fulfilled one of the biggest things on my to-do/ to-go list, a real dream-come-true moment that I had backburnered for way to long. First, some background: I’m a lifelong fan of Pink’s Hot Dogs in Los Angeles, known for its celebrity clientele, a place where every A-lister has a dog created in his honor. And when I say fan, I mean I once waited in its impossibly long line for four hours for the pleasure of biting into one of their delicious chili dogs. So when Pink’s opened at Planet Hollywood in Vegas a few years ago, you can imagine the first two thoughts that popped into my head: 1) “Hallelujah, I no longer have to travel to L.A. to get my chili-dog fix!” 2) “I wonder what the odds are that I’ll ever have my very own hot dog?” Turns out the odds were pretty good. Not long after he opened Pink’s Las Vegas, restaurateur Billy Richardson (Holsteins, LBS at Red Rock, The Barrymore at The Royal House) told me to come up with a signature creation. It took me a while, but I finally cashed in on his offer. Now, during the winter months, you can order the Melinda Sheckells Haute Dog. What’s on it? Half chili, half ketchup and a few onions sprinkled on top for flavor. Call me biased, but I think it’s the perfect way to end a wild night of clubhopping on and around the Strip. Which brings me to the theme of the December issue of Vegas/Rated. After all, aside from making dreams come true, Las Vegas is known for its nightlife, and this month we celebrate everything that happens once the sun goes down. Inside you will discover the people to know, the DJs to listen to and the hottest of hot spots to visit (including a few places that haven’t even opened yet). When making your plans for the night, just remember this one bit of advice: Sometimes you have to crash the party to start the party!

CONTRIBUTORS

Todd HansHaw

Hanshaw’s styling career began in New York, where he created looks for many of his friends, including Patti LaBelle, Rene Russo, Gwyneth Paltrow and Cyndi Lauper, while also working for such high-profile publications as Vogue and Elle. He moved to Las Vegas in 2004 to be the fashion director at Wynn Las Vegas, where besides traveling to Italy, Paris and New York to stock his stores, he was also the stylist for Wynn Magazine. In this issue, Hanshaw styled Night Shade (Page 28). “A weeklong trip to Buenos Aires, first class all the way. It’s the last city on my top 20 that I haven’t been to yet.”

Tomo

Tomo was born in Switzerland and went to art school in Zurich. His work has appeared in several national magazines, including Time, Rolling Stone and Newsweek. Muscionico now lives in Los Angeles, where he operates a portrait studio, and frequently travels to Las Vegas on assignment. Among other features for this issue, Muscionico photographed DJ hot boys the EC Twins inside The Royal House (Page 34). “Food on the table of every hungry child in America.”

This month Nyman previews December’s top concerts (Page 70).

He has resided in Las Vegas for the past five years, and other than his wife and kids, his passion is what you see in his work. The Smith center for the Performing Arts, slated to open in March, has commissioned las Vegas artist Tim Bavington to create two works for the campus. The first, a painting based on composer Aaron copland’s “Fanfare for the common Man,” will hang in the grand lobby, and the second (also based on “Fanfare for the common Man”) will be an 80-foot-long outdoor installation in Symphony Park. Bavington has become one of Nevada’s most widely known artists for his vibrant works that translate music into visuals. “I think the fact that I’m a local artist and that most of my work is based on musical structure makes a commission a natural thing,” Bavington says.

WHAT TO EXPECT Upon entering, guests will be greeted by 1 OAK’s signature poem wall. From there the venue is divided into only two sections: an expansive main area and a smaller, more private back room. The entire space has been reconfigured across multiple levels, with tables surrounding a central rectangular dance floor. Comfortable ledges that offer a bird’s-eye seat or a great place to dance surround modular banquettes. Tables will share this space and thus create an even more convivial environment than what is currently offered at your average nightclub. Additionally, 1 OAK will feature a John Avalon Series 3 Sound System, which will be the city’s most advanced—and loud enough to bump the top house and pop talent that will be booked nightly. Shown here, the art of Roy Nachum.

NYC VS. VEGAS: NOW THERE ARE TWO OF A KIND Las Vegas is home to the “mega club,” so it’s no surprise that 1 OAK Las Vegas will be bigger than the New York location (pictured left). Still, Sartiano says those familiar with the original will recognize many details. The New York space has unmistakable black-andwhite herringbone-tiled floors that will be making an appearance in Vegas. The circular chandeliers with exposed light bulbs will also be brought out west, along with the warm, earthy color palette and gold accents. Fans of New York may take notice of the artwork commissioned for the Las Vegas club: It’s by Roy Nachum, the same artist responsible for the surrealist images in the original space.

TIME FOR DESIGN Las Vegas Design Center, which is located within World Market Center downtown, presents its inaugural Designer of the Year awards November 10. The contest recognizes exceptional local interior design and architecture talent. Randy Wells, vice president of LVDC, says Las Vegas has a nascent but spectacular design scene. “We’ve seen a lot of incredible talent and some great stuff that comes out of here,” Wells says, “and we felt being a good citizen of the design community, it was incumbent upon us to recognize.” Cary Vogel, principal at Interiors by Cary Vogel, entered the competition and says it couldn’t have come at a better time. “It’s an important development, as it helps reactivate and revitalize the Las Vegas community after we were so badly hit by the economic downturn,” he says. “It is like a new blossom on the design tree.” To learn more about the program, visit lvdesigncenter.com/events.

THREE CHEERS FOR BEER Trouble choosing between red, blonde and brunette? You’re not alone. Revolver Saloon and Dance Hall, at Santa Fe Station in the northern part of town, just launched three signature beers, making for a tough decision. The Red is an original Oktoberfest lager, rich in amber color and heavy on hops. Blonde is a German-style Helles lager, robust and malty. And Brunette is a Nova Scotia-style brown ale, balancing the sweetness of honey and caramel with fresh hops. Of course, if you can’t pick one, you can always try all three. 4949 N. Manufactured by Girard-Perregaux, the timepieces come in two styles: Solo Tempo (rose gold, $14,500) or Chronograph (rose gold, $28,300). ANGEL’S FLIGHT Angel Management Group, which oversees 15 properties in Las Vegas—including Wet Republic, Pure Nightclub, LAX Nightclub and Venus Pool Club—is heading east. AMG has teamed up with Atlantic City-based Revel Entertainment to oversee the entertainment, nightlife and day-life venues within Revel, the new $2.4 billion Atlantic City Boardwalk beachfront casino and resort, scheduled to open in the spring. When the 6.3 millionsquare-foot property is finished, it will have more than 1,600 rooms, and more than 50 dining, retail, spa and theater options, along with cutting-edge clubs and bars.

superstar DJ duo the ec twins (marc and allister Blackham) grew up on the streets of manchester, england, and started DJing at age 16. their popularity in america exploded in tandem with the electronic dance music movement, and now they’re known for their over-the-top, often shirtless, live shows at marquee and tao nightclubs, which include the obligatory champagne shower (“We started spraying it in fun … the most expensive kind ... and i told people to not get offended,” allister says). While the twins quickly made a splash on the Vegas nightlife scene, it was the duo’s remix of the Dirty Vegas hit club song “Little White Doves” that propelled them to another level this past summer. shot on location at the Royal house, Vegas/Rated played dress up and dress down with the boys, who can’t keep quiet (and can’t keep their clothes on). With personalities as big as both the venues they play and their plans for future (“We want to make Vegas the ibiza of america,” allister says), it seems like only a matter of time before they leave a permanent impression on the american music scene.

Sage Advice Chef Shawn MCClain’S inspired menu tAkes diners’ tAste buds on A thrilling roller-CoaSter ride By graCe B a S C o S /photography By anthony Mair One of the Strip’s most underrated culinary heroes is Sage, located inside Aria at CityCenter. While several high-profile restaurants on Las Vegas Boulevard garner a lot of publicity, Sage chugs away quietly, consistently producing innovative modern American fare that dazzles epicures and casual eaters alike, thanks to a menu by award-winning Chef Shawn McClain. After establishing his culinary empire in Chicago, McClain set up shop at Aria when it opened in CityCenter nearly two years ago, and he has been a faithful dining recommendation for those in the know ever since. Through his signature four-course menu, guests are taken on a journey of the best ingredients and flavors the season has to offer and a tour of dishes that highlight the best of McClain’s culinary abilities and ideas. Everything on the signature menu, McClain says, “is purely for Sage. We try to walk a fine line that’s new, fresh and creative, [yet] define things so that they’re still approachable. It’s ultimately a tricky line. … There’s an art and a trick to creating so people feel comfortable yet enthusiastic before enjoying it.” Guests have their choice of three dishes for the first course and two for the rest—and the choices aren’t easy. For the fall and winter months, the menu focuses on heartier products that are meant to fortify against the falling temperatures (yes, it gets cold in Las Vegas). For instance, shaved Brussels sprouts are

tossed with slivers of Taylor Gold pears for a wintry, earthy salad brightened by a baconmustard vinaigrette. The Wagyu beef tartare is a lesson in decadence, topped with the yolk of a slow-poached egg. The accompanying crushed caper aioli adds salinity, while the bittersweet crispy chocolate adds texture and a spark of contrast against the richness of the proteins. Bellies—both the pork and beef variety— are prominent on this menu. Pork belly gets glazed in the second course, served with a single tortelloni on the side, and joined by a delicately flavored lobster mushroom and crispy pancetta. On the other hand, 48-hour beef belly gets its start—you guessed it—two days in advance, undergoing a 48hour sous vide (vacuum-sealed in plastic) so that it swoons underneath your fork. Watch out for the Padron peppers, as it’s a gamble as to which bite may or may not bite you back. Dessert combines everyone’s favorite peanut butter and chocolate, which fill a crunchy-bottomed tart. And throughout all of this, the beverage combinations are especially fun at Sage, not only traditional wine pairings, but a smart selection of beers that have been picked to complement each dish as well. Contemporary American cuisine has become a cliché in fine-dining circles, especially on the Strip. But in its commitment to using local products and its consistent creation of thoughtful, well-executed dishes, Sage is a standout.

Just try a flinty Chablis (made in Burgundy, France, from chardonnay grapes vinified in stainless steel) side-by-side with a buttery barrel-fermented California chardonnay. While the latter shows off the preferences and bears the mark of the winemaker, the former displays the true varietal characteristics of the grape, and bears the mark of nature.

Doing it in the Daylight It’s not every day you can attend an event at one of the Strip’s hottest restaurants and still be home in time for dinner. Lavo’s new Saturday brunch transforms the art of the day club into a new experience altogether. Launched at its New York outpost in November 2010, what started out as a few mimosas and a delicious stack of pancakes has turned into an affair that defies description. Picture lingerie-wearing stilt walkers, go-go dancers with bundles of cotton candy dangling from their firm, toned bodies and beautiful women painted in gold from head to toe. While the food—including white polenta pancakes and almond-crusted French toast—is delicious, this feast is hardly about eating. It’s a champagne party with great side dishes. And as the crowd absorbs the free-for-all vibe—dancing on the tabletops to the sounds of DJ Vice, shooting each other with LED ray guns, and popping confetti into the rafters—it becomes clear that 2 p.m. has definitely never seen a party like this. Two Kings in a Cipher, attack of the killer egos, the gods of luxury rap: Use whatever signifier you like, but the landing of hip-hop CEO Jay-Z and his prodigal brother Kanye West at the MGM Grand Garden Arena on their Watch the Throne tour will be massive. Whip out your cellphone camera, wear your most aromatic aftershave lotion or your sweetest perfume, swallow your freshest breath mints and, of course, bring plenty of cash for the after party. Kanye’s got crazy hits, from “Jesus Walks” and “Through the Wire” to “Gold Digger” and “All of the Lights.” As for Jay-Z, how does “Big Pimpin’,” “Dirt Off Your Shoulder,” “99 Problems” and “Empire State of Mind” sound to you? When you combine the two … uh-oh, the world just ended.

Michael Curry, who designed the props for The Beatles LOVE, created a giant fedora and sparkly glove for MJTI.

Dancing

While all of the costumes were created originally for Michael Jackson THE IMMORTAL, some of the wardrobe technology used was first part of the This Is It Tour. Designer Zaldy Goco, who also did the wardrobe for This is It, says Michael adored the “light-up” tracksuit pants (opposite page, bottom left) that are now in MJTI.

First they remastered the music of legendary band The Beatles, creating the unforgettable show LOVE at The Mirage. Then they took the iconic image of Elvis Presley and shook up Aria Resort & Casino with a stage production featuring progressive trampoline technology. Now Cirque du Soleil is giving Michael Jackson a tributary nod that tops all others past and future, Michael Jackson THE IMMORTAL World Tour. One of the most talented performers of the last two centuries, Jackson’s dance moves paired with his epic pop songs turned him into a legend by the age of 30. Approach any crowd and someone is likely to be able to demo one of his patented dance moves like the Moonwalk. Taking on a phenomenon isn’t easy, but Cirque du Soleil delves deep into Jackson’s decadeslong catalog throughout MJTI (which is now touring arenas worldwide), pulling out favorites as well as lesser-known hits. Michael Curry, one of the world’s foremost prop designers, complements the opening scenes of MJTI with an animatronic flying baby Michael, which creates a bridge from the Jackson 5 days into megahits such as “Thriller” and “Billie Jean.” The music does not follow chronological order so the audience is continually surprised and delighted by what’s next. The show uses more than just Jackson’s music. Jamie King, a longtime Jackson collaborator and choreographer, is credited as the writer and director, and brought with him first-hand knowledge of the singer. King had many Jackson resources at his fingertips, combining them with the wide body of strengths offered by Cirque, to create a stellar showcase of music, dance and acrobatics. All the loves of Jackson’s life are on display. From the Mark Fisher-designed Giving Tree as the centerpiece of the set design to a dancing pet chimp Bubbles, the show captivates both those who grew up with the icon and those for whom his style may be new. Of course, Jackson’s music also lends itself beautifully to an arena-scale production. The Jackson family gave the show their seal of approval at its premiere in Montreal on October 2. “I want to thank Cirque for capturing the true person he was,” says Tito Jackson. “The unity, the love, wanting to make the world a better place … .” Michael Jackson THE IMMORTAL World Tour, Mandalay Bay Events Center, Dec. 3 to Dec. 27. Tickets start at $50, cirquedusoleil.com.

Another MJ show

This is the first of two Michael Jackson-themed shows that Cirque du Soleil is working on. The second will be a permanent show, opening in 2013 at Mandalay Bay, in the same space where The Lion King now roars. It will be completely different than Michael Jackson THE IMMORTAL World Tour.

Matthew Herbert’s One Pig has a bloody premise: the life of a pig from farm to table. However, the British electronic musician thankfully omits the porcine death squeals; instead, he cuts to the sound of knives sharpening, and then a diningroom table filled with lips smacking, all set over an ambient electronic background. Herbert’s catalog includes the 2001 house-music classic Bodily Functions, but One Pig is more 40-minute documentary, with no grooves allowed.

If a pop song was a bull’s-eye, could St. Vincent hit it with a baseball? Or would she doodle around the edges before finally nailing the center? The point is that this ace guitarist knows how to reach the sweet spot, but on Strange Mercy she takes awhile to get there, favoring elusive indie-rock arrangements over obvious pop hooks. But when she sings about “living in fear of the year of the tiger,” any adult who suffered the burdens of adolescence will understand.

Florence Welch isn’t a woman who needs subtlety. Ceremonials, her second album as Florence & the Machine, has stomping percussion and choral backgrounds that chant loudly as she sings of leaving her body, being infected by devils and descending into the water, ready for spiritual cleansing. The sound is less machine-like than the Gothic bohemianism of Siouxsie & the Banshees and the pagan witchery of Kate Bush. It’s compelling enough, but there’s little room for calm or silence.

Camp may be the only legitimate rap album from a well-known comedian, namely Community sitcom actor Donald Glover. (No, “Rapping” Rodney Dangerfield doesn’t count.) Glover spends a lot of time touting his black punk credentials, and on the poignant “Hold You Down” he asks, “We all look the same to the cops/ Ain’t that good enough?” But talking about “stupid shit” and adopting a martyr complex over soaring arena pop melodies suggests he’s not as different as he thinks.

Looping State of Mind is not only the title of The Field’s third album, it also sums up the album’s minimal techno bliss. If that sounds like any other electronic record to you, rest assured it’s not. Producer Axel Willner leads a band through strictly regulated beats that unfold like a spreading pool of water, from “Arpeggiated Love” to the imagined sunset of “Burned Out.” This Looping State of Mind is a quest to find something transcendent in the rigors of everyday life.

The Las Vegas nightlife scene is now regarded as one of the best in the world thanks to superstar DJs and breathtaking nightclubs. But it didn’t just happen overnight. One of the original party rockers at the forefront of the transformation was Lee Vlastaris Jr., a.k.a. DJ Hollywood, who took a leap of faith moving from New Jersey to Las Vegas in 1994, first setting up shop at The Beach nightclub in 1995. Vlastaris has been such an integral component in Las Vegas’ nightlife uprising that former Mayor Oscar Goodman gave him a key to the city last year and christened December 23 “DJ Hollywood Day.” In addition to working the decks, Vlastaris is also a budding restaurateur, having opened DJ Hollywood’s Pizza & Gyro earlier this year a few miles west of the Strip

Cowboy Up December is here, and that means one thing in Las Vegas: cowboy time. Every year, the city reverts to its Western roots when the National Finals Rodeo takes over the town for 10 days of nonstop action both in and out of the ring. Of course, these tourists in 10-gallon hats are more into swilling beer at saloons than partaking in bottle service at swank nightclubs. If you’re a cowboy (or cowgirl) who fits that description during NFR week (December 1-10), visit Gilley’s at Treasure Island. The bar was an institution at the Frontier Hotel before it closed in 2007, but three years later it relocated to Treasure Island in a new venue overlooking the Strip—with the famous Gilley Girls and mechanical bull making the one-block move down the Strip. If line-dancing is more your forte, check out Stoney’s south of Mandalay Bay. It’s the biggest country club in the city and has the dance-floor capacity to prove it (2,500 square feet to be exact). Indeed, it’s time to cowboy up. Gilley’s at Treasure Island, 702.894.7111; gilleyslasvegas.com. Stoney’s Rockin’ Country Bar, 9151 Las Vegas Blvd. South, 702.435.2855; stoneysrockincountry.com

Gray is one busy man, overseeing seven venues inside the Palms Casino Resort: four nightclubs, two restaurants and the pool. In 2005, knowing he was destined for a career in hospitality, Gray—then a senior at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas—applied to be the assistant hotel manager at the Palms and got the job. As his career ascended so did his sense of style, gathering ideas from men’s magazines, ads and blogs and incorporating them into his look. When his daily schedule doesn’t call for a custom-made suit, Tom Ford is his go-to designer. When he unwinds with his family, Gray goes casual in Hudson Jeans and an American Apparel T-shirt. A native New Yorker, Jason Strauss had already found success in the world of Manhattan nightlife when he and his partners brought Tao to Las Vegas six years ago. The immediate hit led to multiple expansions, and with his partners Strauss now oversees all facets of seven venues: Tao Asian Bistro, Nightclub and Beach, Lavo Italian Restaurant and Nightclub, and Marquee Nightclub & Dayclub. Since he regularly makes the rounds, Strauss is conscious about representing a style that’s equal parts professional (to maintain his management edge) and casual (to fit into the party). His go-to look is jeans, a collared shirt and a Paul Smith jacket. On his off days, Strauss escapes the hectic nightlife scene by hitting the tennis courts. Meet The Ringer One Of Angel MAnAgeMent grOup’s tOp VIp hOsts gIVes tIps On hOW tO DO It bIg In VegAs Las Vegas sends most people packing after two days of nonstop partying at the world’s grandest nightclubs. The opposite happened when Brandon Ring came to the city on vacation. Ring was a stockbroker with Morgan Stanley when he visited and abruptly decided to quit his job and move into the nightlife industry. Starting from the bottom at Pure Nightclub in 2005, Ring has since risen to become one of the city’s top hosts, taking care of VIP clientele and serving as the Vegas ambassador for the 8,347 contacts in his Blackberry. What does it mean to be a VIP host? VIP hosts create the party. We handle everything from VIP table reservations, determine how the room gets sat and decide who gets to hang out in the VIP sections. How do you get the best deals? Work with a VIP host. A good host will be able to help find you the best spots on the right nights for your budget.

What is one thing everyone should do at a Vegas nightclub? Spray champagne into the crowd, and if you are coming to Pure, don’t forget to go up to the terrace. We have the best view of the Strip. Oh, and tip the bathroom attendant. —Elizabeth Sewell

In the Know Looking for a vegas experience you’LL never forget? go see this guy It seems like everyone “knows someone” in Vegas. But when you actually need a reliable hookup, it’s better to know Jessie Gibson. Founder of Umbrella Marketing Group, Gibson has lived in Vegas for more than 10 years and has worked in a number of capacities within the nightlife industry. These days, he makes a living providing personal concierge services, such as scoring his clients highly coveted VIP tables, dinner reservations and event tickets. With connections at every major venue, he has the ability to curate the ideal nightlife experience—even for large groups. “I like to send people wherever I think they would have the most fun,” he says. “It all depends on the group.” Planning a bachelor party? “For big groups of guys, be realistic. Not everybody can afford everything. Tell me exactly what you want to do for the whole weekend, and we’ll put it together. If you don’t have that kind of money, we can prioritize what you want to do the most and back off on some other things.” Visiting during a holiday? “If you want to have the best time of your life, don’t come on a holiday weekend, unless you’re planning on spending a lot of money. On holiday weekends, it doesn’t matter if you’re a guy or a girl—everyone pays.” —Laura Mier

NIGHTLIFE GLOSSARY

Lead/Senior VIP Host: a host with a bigger clientele

PhotograPh by nick coletsos

VIP: Very Important Person—in other words, someone who spends a lot of dough on bottle service

Gratuity: an amount of money automatically added to the bill for your table host, typically 18 percent of the tab Tip: the money given on top of the bill as a way to say “thanks” for the service; 20 percent is standard in Las Vegas

VIP Table Host: the hot gal who delivers the bottles to your table, makes your drinks … and hands you the bill at the end.

Side Tip: a token of appreciation given to the busser or a bar back, and money they don’t have to share with the server or bartender

Busser: the person who works the hardest at your table; they’re usually clearing glasses, refilling ice or finding your server

Guest List: each VIP host has a guest list filled with their friends and clients; getting on the list means less waiting time and, sometimes, free entry

General Admission: the line for those who aren’tpurchasing table service and/or aren’t on the guest list Holding the Line: a marketing scheme used to draw attention to the club by allowing a long line to form so the venue appears busier (and thus more attractive) than it actually is; if you’ve waited in a long line and the club was empty when you eventually got in, you’ve been a victim of this tactic

THE PLAY BOOK

Promoter: a step below the host with similar responsibilities; also passes out flyers and wristbands to stimulate interest in a show or event

Bartender: can be your best friend or worst enemy; has no time for drunk party-goers or indecisive orders, and will ignore you if you whistle, wave your arms, snap your fingers or yell, “Hey you!”

play

Host: a person who recruits guests and books tables for nightclubs and lounges

Bottle Service: purchasing an entire bottle of alcohol for your party; also guarantees you have a table and/or booth Open Bar: free booze, usually only available for an hour right when the club opens, with a featured liquor or cheap champagne; mostly directed toward the ladies unless it is sponsored by someone other than the club

In keeping up with the dance-music craze, Surrrender has made additions to enhance the DJ experience for guests. First, the DJ booth was moved to open up the dance floor just in case you feel the need to spread out. But during the desert’s few cold-weather December days, the club makes modifications to ensure everyone’s comfortable. The changes begin with the outdoor area being fitted with a dome to expand the usable space. The gaming pavilion on the pool deck will be fully enclosed this year, along with the outside patio that leads to the restaurant Switch inside the Encore. With both the enclosures and Surrender’s already existing inside space, the total area equals 25,000 square feet of dance-music paradise. In addition to the changes to the venue itself, expect to see some alterations to the cocktail servers’ and go-go dancers’ attire. For instance, the dancers will be outfitted with two new uniforms: a lingerie-inspired number and another featuring high-waisted shorts and a rhinestone bra. The Other Night Out Lady SiLvia iS the neweSt hot Spot in downtown’S revitaLization While the Strip has quickly made itself into one of the world’s biggest nightlife destinations, it’s not the only type of night out Las Vegas has to offer. If you’re in the market for something a little outside the Vegas nightlife box, look no further than Downtown and the Arts District. The area, which encompasses Downtown from Charleston Boulevard to Fremont Street along Las Vegas Boulevard, teems with young Las Vegans looking for an alternative to the high-energy Strip nightclub experience. The newest bar in the downtown corridor creating a buzz sits at the base of the high-rise condominium SoHo Lofts. Just don’t expect a neon marquee to point you in the right direction. Lady Silvia is designed with a unique exclusivity in mind, says owner Sam Cherry of Sam Cherry Development. “It’s someplace we want to keep for people who are downtown-savvy or in the know.” Named after a boat that belonged to Cherry’s son’s great grandmother, Lady Silvia has nods to the bar’s namesake through art painted on the ceiling by local artist Steven Spann. The look of the space is “Old World library” as Cherry puts it, and was inspired by a visit to the Strahov

Monastery in Prague. With rich fabrics and eclectic furniture, the space was designed to mimic the monastery’s comfortable, inviting feeling. In keeping with the theme, Lady Silvia also has a collection of 5,000 books that line the walls, each hardcover being sourced by

Vegas and intimate aren’t usually used in the same sentence. It’s also not the first city that comes to mind when thinking of experimental DJs and lesser-known artists. But Angel Management Group’s Savile Row is working to change all that. The small venue, formerly Noir Bar, has introduced a Wednesdaynight party aimed at locals and music-lovers alike. The Cut, instituted by AMG’s resident indie music lover Richard Alexander, was designed to highlight Savile Row’s strengths. “The room is intimate and easily accessible,” Alexander says. “The DJ can be seen from any part of the room, and we have the best bartenders in the city. It’s just a fun place.” Hoping to entice those who can’t partake in the usual weekend parties or hang till dawn on a weeknight, DJs on Wednesdays get things started at 11 p.m., a concept which Alexander says is designed to get people to the party and home by 2 a.m. He also books some of the hottest up-andcoming talent when it comes to indie and electro music, with names such as Remix Artist Collective and Holy Ghost coming to town to play sets. There’s also a focus on remixes, which Savile Row has artists produce and make available to download for free on Twitter and Facebook. As for the future, Alexander says he wants to focus on attracting more artists and turning Wednesday nights into a music-lovers paradise. “I’m such a fan of music; I’m always searching and asking people what is new.” —Elizabeth Sewell

French producer and master remixer Fred Falke may not be the most well-known DJ in America, but his recent tour stateside and upcoming full-length release are aiming to change that. falke made his vegas debut at Savile Row’s the Cut and was impressed by the amount of energy in the room. “it’s all about the party in vegas,” says falke, who is on just his second tour of america. it’s a change he welcomes, saying that audience ears in the US are more fresh to dance music than in europe. the former bass player is also introducing audiences to a new layer of live dJ sets by bringing his guitar into the mix, playing along with the music.

Party rock Mondays Once a month, one of Vegas’ wildest parties invades Marquee Nightclub inside The Cosmopolitan. party rock Mondays is an extravaganza featuring clubgoers dressed in bright neon colors, glow bands and a sense of style that mocks the ’80s. Centered on a special guest DJ—redfoo from lMFao—the club’s energy is electric and overwhelmingly fun. the party rock crew, which consists up of redfoo and his lMFao bandmate sky blu, keeps the crowd shuffling with their bombastic anthems and over-the-top personas.

He owns his own record label. He’s signed to superstar DJ Deadmau5’s label, Mau5trap. He’s 23 years old, and his name is Skrillex. With the release of two EPs in just a year, Skrillex—known to the lucky as Sonny Moore—has toured the world, headlined multiple festivals and risen in popularity thanks to the success of Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites, which at one point occupied eight spots on Beatport’s Top 10 chart. The L.A. native has found a second home in Vegas, treating locals and tourists alike to an illuminated dance party. You first entered the spotlight when singing for screamo band From First to Last, but it seems electronic music has always been your deeper passion. Electronic music is marketed as computers and stuff, and this is not an ego thing, but you can’t just do what I do and learn and create that overnight. It takes a lot of time to learn about phonics and mixing and synth design, sound design and stuff like that. I was making electronic music even before I was playing in a band

and even doing remixes for the band. I’ve been doing it my whole life. You don’t have an apartment anywhere. How do you make life on the road your home? I think if you love the music you’re making and you love everything you do, everything around you is sort of accentuated by that. If you don’t love what you do in your life, you’re not gonna like the place you live. That’s why some people move around all the time because they don’t know what they want to do with their life. They think if they move to a different city it’s gonna change everything, but you gotta love what you do. The people who surround you, everything will sort of come together the way it’s supposed to. You have a distinct look and style different than your typical DJ. Is that by design? Yeah, that’s just me. I needed prescriptions for years actually, and this was after I shaved [half of] my head. I had a very serious stigmatism, and they couldn’t give me contacts. They were like, “We can’t give you Lasik; you need to wear glasses.” So I became a glasses guy, and it just became natural. —Natalie Holbrook

But they’re the DJs who are spinning for you night after night, keeping the party going into the wee hours. And if you believe Robert Hunter (a.k.a. DJ Karma of the Light Group), DJs do a lot more than just show up to the club and spin casually. Hunter’s involvement with The Bank, where he plays every Sunday for industry night, goes far beyond a nightly set. “I have a bigger part in the programming and the overall feel of the club on a day-to-day basis,” Hunter says. “I work with marketing, management and the owners to keep the clubs fresh and give each club its own identity.” At The Bank, that means keeping the music sexy and energetic, like the upscale clientele the Bellagio-based venue attracts. To that end, Hunter pays special attention to what the ladies love, saying they’re the key to success. “If you can keep the girls dancing, you can’t go wrong.” His go-to styling is oldschool hip-hop or vocal house music, which he says are always a hit. “Good music is good music, regardless of the genre.” —ElizabethSewell

german proDucer stays true to his cLassicaL roots Have you ever heard a classical piece in a Las Vegas nightclub? You may soon get your chance. Zedd’s “Dovregrubben,” a stomping electro-house rendering of Edvard Grieg’s famous “In the Hall of the Mountain King,” topped the Beatport charts last summer and is fast becoming a DJ staple. “Classical music is where I come from; these were my roots,” says the German producer. He composed “Dovregrubben” for Norway’s Russ Bus season, when high-school graduates rent out party buses for all kinds of naughty pranks. Zedd is a bit mischievous himself: He

built another hit around the “The Legend of Zelda,” which includes vintage eight-bit samples from the ’80s video-game classic. Perhaps it’s that whimsical nature—and acclaimed remixes for Diddy-Dirty Money (“Ass on the Floor”) and the Black Eyed Peas (“The Time (Dirty Bit)”)—that led new rave kingpin Skrillex to sign Zedd to his OWSLA label. “Skrillex is a good friend of mine. We’ve been touring together, and he was one of my first believers,” Zedd says. “When I was producing ‘Shave It,’ I met Skrillex in Vegas. We hung out, and I played him the song; he liked it and wanted to release it.” Sure enough, “Shave It” rapidly ascended the Beatport charts upon its release this fall. With so much love here, Zedd often feels more comfortable DJing in the States than in his native country. “The American scene is way easier for me. People in general know the songs I play,” he says. “In Germany, I play songs that I think everyone would know and love, and people don’t recognize them.” C’mon, how could you not know “The Legend of Zelda?” Zedd performs at Haze Nightclub, Dec. 2.

Love at First sip

Delicious tiDings in aDvance oF Hyde Bellagio’s new Year’s eve DeBut

by xania woodman

To quote Tori Amos, it was a sorta fairytale, something of a love affair that began in Hollywood. Not Old Hollywood, mind you, but the new, fresh Hollywood, where pretty young things wear pretty tight things and sip cocktails no one at the Brown Derby or Chasen’s could have ever fathomed—namely the Love Unit, where vanilla meets red bell pepper. Who knew? Ryan Magarian of Liquid Relations made the match in 2006; the resulting Love Unit cocktail—then rum-based—was featured in the The New York Times when it debuted on the Hyde Lounge menu that year in Los Angeles. It has since become the signature cocktail most associated with the Hyde brand, and has hung upon the lips of some of Hollywood’s most iconic actors, models and musicians. Portland, Ore.-based cocktail and beverage service consultant Magarian recently returned to L.A. to freshen up the Hyde Lounge cocktail culture and to get ready for Hyde Bellagio’s New Year’s Eve debut. And through it all, the Love Unit remains. “Simply put, it rolls like a wave of enlightened freshness over the palate. The savory flavors of Thai basil and red bell pepper ‘buttered up’ with a touch of vanilla, all structured by bright, clean, acidic notes of fresh-pressed lime and grapefruit juices,” says Magarian, who professes a deep love of fresh flavors delivered in unexpected and whimsical combinations. “There’s really nothing quite like it.”

The Love UniT

As served at Hyde Bellagio, $14

In a mixing glass, muddle ¹/3 pint fresh, loose basil leaves with 1 ounce Stolichnaya vodka, 1 ounce Stolichnaya vanilla vodka, ¾ ounce freshly pressed lime juice, ½ ounce freshly pressed grapefruit juice, ¾ ounce freshly extracted red bell pepper juice and ¾ ounce simple syrup. Fill glass with ice, cover with a cocktail tin and shake vigorously for six seconds. Double-fine strain into a chilled cocktail glass, and garnish with a red bell pepper ring and a sprig of fresh basil.

Hyde, A Peek To listen to SBE Nightlife Group senior vice president Costas Charalambous describe the space poised to open on New Year’s Eve as Hyde Bellagio inspires chills. There’s a narrative to designer Philippe Starck’s vision: a hitherto undiscovered apartment typical of the 17th century, a collection of rooms perched, perhaps, over the grand canals of Venice or with views of Lake Como. This is the salon of a sophisticated Italian gentleman, a bachelor, and only just discovered. “We have the ability with a smaller space to be able to morph Hyde to exist in Vegas,” Charalambous says, “but at the same time be the best-in-class of what is available there.” And that space is meant to inspire locals and tourists alike to rise to the occasion—dress sexy, feel sexy and interact with their surroundings Open sunset to sunrise, evenings at Hyde begin at 5 p.m. with small plates from nearby Circo. “Beyond the Love Unit, Hyde Bella-

gio will deliver an unrivaled mixology experience,” says Ryan Magarian of Liquid Relations. “In addition to the cocktails, Hyde Bellagio will showcase a fresh, seasonally influenced Bellini menu inspired by the colorful cocktail culture of Italy, and will also offer over 1,000 wines from the Bellagio’s collection.” At 11 p.m., Hyde undergoes a transformation from lounge to highenergy nightclub. That’s when the fun really begins. Hyde Bellagio will capitalize on the former Fontana Lounge layout, retaining the dance floor in its Grand Salon, and boast an expanded lakeside terrace. Forty VIP tables are dotted throughout on multiple levels, along with the elevated DJ booth and main bar. Outside, one particular table lives in an alcove, waiting to be converted into a DJ booth for that inevitable 2 a.m. surprise set by some young starlet or tastemaker— just the sort of party the brand is known for. — Xania Woodman

If that opener is someone like Dave Fogg, then chances are that person’s skills are every bit as good, if not better. Fogg, who has served many tours of duty on the Strip, is a native, and remembers when he was growing up “my next-door neighbor would have parties, and Elvis Presley, Tom Jones, and Liberace would come over.” Save for brief stints in San Diego and Los Angeles—where he worked for major labels like Warner Bros. and Polygram Records—Fogg has spent most of his career here, from DJing at nightclubs around the city to producing music for the sexy show Headlights & Tailpipes at the classic Stardust Hotel. “I’ve been a DJ for over 25 years,” he says. “I have some old-school roots.” These days, Fogg is in the middle of the electronic dance music explosion. After booking such talent as Rusko and Diplo at Palms Casino Resort’s Rain nightclub as its entertainment director, he chose to return to his first love as a resident DJ at the Wynn’s XS and Tryst clubs. “I couldn’t get acclimated to sitting at a desk all day,” he confesses. But he cautions that being an opener isn’t for the faint of heart. When asked how he transitions from the progressive house and trance melodies of an Oakenfold set to the walloping bass of a night with Rusko, Fogg counters, “You’d think that the opener for Rusko would be playing dubstep. But on his tour rider he requests that the DJ plays absolutely no dubstep, and if the DJ does, then he has the option of pulling that DJ off the decks!” Laughing, he adds, “There are definitely some guidelines in place when you’re dealing with artists like this, because there’s a lot of money and egos involved. A lot of people say it’s harder to open. You have to build up the dance floor without burning out the headliner by playing hit records.” The object is to bring the audience to a peak so they’re ready to explode when the Oakenfolds of the world hit the stage. “Sometimes the headliners will give [openers] a list of songs they can’t play. It goes to that extreme sometimes. So your knowledge of music has to be on point. You just can’t know the top 100 songs on Beatport.”

Nightlife in Vegas is all about the unexpected, and it doesn’t get more surprising than walking out onto a roof deck nestled under the pillars of the Eiffel Tower and encountering butterflies with five-foot wings, clowns playfully making balloon animals and horse-faced men cruising the crowd in goat pants. This is the scene at the newest Saturday night party on the Strip, Butterfly, which takes place on Chateau Nightclub’s terrace. The venue opened to fanfare with a performance by rapper Pharrell Williams, and big plans are in the works to offer much more than just elaborately dressed performers and an enchanting atmosphere (think top dance-music DJs). Butterfly is also the first exclusively outdoor venue in the city and offers guests the opportunity to party with an unparalleled view of the Bellagio fountains and The Cosmopolitan.

Set under the Eiffel Tower, Butterfly takes off every Saturday from Chateau Gardens. The 22,000-squarefoot open-air space features four bars, an elevated DJ booth and state-of-the-art sound system, so you’re free to roam and explore while dancing under the stars.

Smokin’ WhiSkey It doesn’t get manlier than cigars and whiskey, so Casa Fuente in The Forum Shops at Caesars teamed up with Jack Daniel’s to produce a gift for the ultimate guy’s guy. The limitededition Casa Fuente Single Barrel Whiskey is available for a limited time at the cigar bar for $85, with a portion of the proceeds benefiting the Cigar Family Charitable Foundation. Single-barrel whiskey is just that—whiskey from a single barrel that’s influenced by the climate, its placement in the rickhouse and the very barrel that imbues it over time with color, flavor and its own character. With each purchase of the limited-edition whiskey, you’ll be entered into a drawing for a trip to the Jack Daniel’s Distillery in Tennessee. So drink up this holiday season—it’s for charity. the big haul-iday

This striking piece of heavy equipment isn’t your average oversize machine. It began as a 1951 Ford 8N named Cathleen, in honor of the tractor designer’s wife. Taking a cue from Cathleen’s signature red dress, the designer trademarked the color, and every Ford 8N since has been finished in the same hue. This particular tractor’s current owner, Gabriel Culp, customized his lady from top to bottom and back to front, including the front-loader, gearshifts and hydraulic tank.

How do you become known as the Entertainment Capital of the World? By offering the kind of show you can’t get anywhere else. so while you can now play blackjack from California to New Jersey and gaze at scantily clad beauties at all points in between, only in Vegas can you do both from a single seat.

By Matt JacoB

attractions, sex and gambling, casinos up and down the Las Vegas Strip in recent years have introduced titillating gaming pits, where nondescript dealers in conservative buttoned-up uniforms have given way to hard-bodied honeys in barely-there, gravity-defying costumes.

F R o M the Hell’s Belles party pit (Hard Rock) to the Pussycat Dolls gaming pit (Caesars Palace) to the Playboy Club (Palms, shown here), playing blackjack is now equal parts risk and risqué.

SuRE, it still sucks when Heather deals you a 16 against her turned-up ace. But when you gaze up from the table and see her in a bustier, bunny ears and bunny tail (perhaps with a go-go dancer manning a pole next to her), well … let’s just say “busting” at the tables in Vegas has never been this fun.
