“Your sense of space comes from what you feel, not just what you see.” “What gives a space character has a lot to do with the textures: here we have the brick wall, the glass tile in the backsplash, the wood floor, the cabinetry. The neutral palette provides softness that works beautifully with these bold, earthy textures, and acts as a backdrop for everything else.” Mary Jo Peterson, CKD, CBD, CAPS, is an award-winning designer and owner of a Connecticut-based design firm.

talking points. I was recently asked to give a presentation to a group of Boston designers; the topic was mine to choose. Hmm, what to discuss for the hour? I don’t subscribe to design trends, per se, so that was off my list. Art in the home? Too subjective. Color theory? Been there, done that. I had just returned from Marrakech and the Milan Furniture Fair (destinations where creativity flourishes), so my desire was to spur ideas and discuss how to stay curious and excited by design. I adore conversing with designers and artisans who are enthused by what they do. So, my talk began with the subject of PASSION. I know a ton of industry pros whose fierce energy is downright infectious: Jamie Drake, a fervent designer and master colorist. Jiun Ho, who approaches his interiors and furniture collection with great zeal. Clodagh, a one-word wonder, whose work is both mindful and holistic. The list goes on and on… Next, I delved into IMAGINATION. There are endless ways for designers, and homeowners for that matter, to be inspired. Travel! Take a garden tour! Visit a museum! Pin images on Pinterest! Download Instagram! And please, let’s not forget flipping through the pages of design magazines. My talk concluded with the matter of DESIGN, for it’s the creative process—the sketching, the shopping, the installation—that interests me most. What you see on our pages is the end result. Yet getting there, with passion, imagination and design, is where the real thrill lies.
PASSION, IMAGINATION, DESIGN Exciting fabric hanging in Dedar’s Milan showroom; a beautifully designed riad in Marrakech; an imaginatively attired Moroccan woman.

summer. There have been so many exciting events happening in the luxury design community over the last several months. In February, Luxe Interiors + Design, along with Sub-Zero and Wolf, co-sponsored two spectacular functions in Phoenix and Tucson to introduce the upcoming Kitchen Design Contest. On March 6, the Phoenix Art Museum presented the Independent Woman Luncheon, presided over by Ellen Katz, chairman of the Board of Trustees, where designer and author Charlotte Moss spoke about the women who inspire her work.
Also in March, Luxe partnered with John Brooks and Gebert Contemporary Art Gallery to throw an amazing kick-off event at the gallery for the upcoming Tour for Life, benefitting the Southwest Center for HIV/AIDS. We are excited to launch this incredible home tour this fall—make sure to keep an eye out for more details.
In April, designer Lynne Beyer and I hosted accessories maven Jan Barboglio at Neiman Marcus with a wonderful fête to introduce the artist’s newest line. Lastly, we would like to extend our congratulations to interior designer Lori Carroll, as she celebrates 30 years in design.
We hope you enjoy the new issue.

BLISS BOUND The Farm at South Mountain is a very peaceful place that captures Phoenix at its best; you can’t help but feel a sense of tranquility when perusing the grounds. This 12-acre pecan grove is a great spot to gather for a picnic or sit-down meal as there are several fantastic restaurants located right on the expansive property. There’s nothing better than purchasing bold statement pieces that add personality to your ensemble and the white enamel collection is perfect for doing just that. LAP OF LUXURY The Ritz-Carlton, Phoenix on 24th Street is at the center of it all: Shops, movie theatres and great restaurants are all a stone’s throw away. Though admittedly when I’m there, I find it difficult to pull myself away from the luxurious ambiance that engulfs me. My favorite indulgence, aside from the spa, of course, is an impromptu order of their French dip sandwich via in-room dining; I promise it will be the best midnight snack! ritzcarlton.com

GLOBAL SATURATION With his recently launched collection for Duralee, textile designer John Robshaw has penned a passionate love letter to the vibrant personalities, exotic locales and indelible encounters he’s experienced on his travels across the Asian continent. Diving headfirst into this latest venture—which includes his inaugural foray into woven designs—Robshaw has scribed an arresting quartet of colorways, from the earthy and engaging tones that thread themselves through Charcoal/Moss Green and the dramatic dyes found in Indigo/Turquoise, to the boldly saturated hues of Madder/Coral and quietly sophisticated shades expressed in Umber/Khaki. The fabrics’ colors, prints and textures are imbued with Robshaw’s inquisitive, adventurous spirit, and speak to venerated traditional techniques and diverse cultural histories. “My work has always had a strong artsy-ethnic bent,” says Robshaw. “This collection really articulates that small-batch, hand-loomed and -blocked prints vibe.” duralee.com; johnrobshaw.com

INDUSTRIAL ELEMENTS Renowned architecture outfit Marmol Radziner has taken its modernist, sustainably minded approach to design and applied it to jewelry. Furthering the work of its late namesake founder, Donghia continues to push the design envelope with new offerings that are at once innovative yet classic. SUGAR RUSH With a name like Candy, Studio Roeper’s newly introduced coffee table is definitely all parts sweet. Whipped up using a combination of components, including 83 sheets of silver leaf, a quart of crystal clear epoxy, black lacquer and two sumptuous hides from Edelman Leather, the curvy, eye-catching piece is a departure from the mostly linear offerings of the brand. “The leather on this table dictated the form, as it begged to be stretched around something with a bend,” says company founder and senior craftsman Florian Roeper. “A cylinder was not very compelling to me, so I opted for a teardrop shape. It is powerful and dynamic, yet calm; it’s like a glossy, sweet treat, carefully wrapped and ready to be consumed.” studioroeper.com

Continuing its mission of forging forward-thinking collaborations with some of the design world’s most intriguing on-the-cusp as well as established tastemakers, French powerhouse Ligne Roset debuts Oushak, a delicious hand-tufted wool rug available in 49 different colors on a creamy beige background (orange is shown). Created by German designer, artist and theater director Carmen Stallbaumer and unveiled this year at international furniture fairs IMM Cologne and Maison & Objet, the rug’s design—like all of her work, Stallbaumer says—was driven by a search for individuality, function, sensuality and joie de vivre in the everyday, and joins her earlier pieces for the brand, which include the Alambra pillow, Slats chest and Zoom rug. ligne-roset-usa.com

“I’m someone who takes chances and just goes for it,” says furniture designer Jason Scott, whose instincts paid off while backpacking through Bali. “I saw two men unloading a truck filled with furniture and told my guide that I wanted to be taken to where it came from,” says Phoenix-based Scott, who found himself—two ferry boats, three islands and two days later—in an

antiques-laden village on an isle off Java. Scott, who had developed a passion for the “beefy scale” of Indonesian furnishings, began buying pieces to sell in the States, transitioned to fixing broken ones, and, finally, to designing his own. Now, the Jason Scott Collection is handcrafted by 200 workers on that same island and sold through retailers from California to Texas. The furniture—made with teak reclaimed from old houses and sugar factories throughout Indonesia—retains the heft that Scott was first drawn to, along with a mix of Spanish, Mexican and Italian influences. “I don’t consider time or cost when designing,” says Scott. “Something beautiful and extraordinary must not have limitations.” jasonscottcollection.com; 602.442.0860

JASON SCOTT Work approach: I have to love everything I design enough to put it in my own house.
Dream collaboration: I’ve always wanted to work with Jamie Daugaard from Centre Sky Architecture, and that wish has recently been put into motion—he’s designing my house. Inside and out it will be a complete Jason Scott home; I’ve been collecting material for this for over 10 years.
Favorite restaurant: Bali’s Mozaic restaurant offers amazing French cuisine mixed with Balinese flavors. My brother-in-law, Chris Salans, happens to be the owner and chef.
Picasso or van Gogh? Neither. I’m all about Salvador Dalí. His creativity, imagination and talent really make my mind go to another place.
Favorite decorating sources: There’s a huge iron scrap yard in Java that is so great. I get a police escort when I go there because the sellers get so intense that I can’t move. There’s also an incredible Arabic market in Surabaya that has a lot of gems. LUXE INTERIORS

So how do they stay on top of it all after 10 years? “Our style gets better and better with age,” Flatin says of Bungalow’s unique mix, which now includes lifestyle-related pieces such as jewelry, and casual footwear and accessories. “We don’t follow the trends,” she continues. “It feels like we start them.” bungalowaz.com; 480.948.5409

I thought, ‘What if it really was a column but with glass used instead of liquid?’ ” Today, Rigan has created hundreds of stand-alone pieces as well as numerous landscape designs and wall installations. “Stone can be realized in so many different ways,” he says. “Whether you’re in Yosemite or Manhattan, it’s timeless.” ottoriganstudio.com; 520.432.1113
SET IN STONE
OTTO RIGAN I got started… At 11 years old, I determined that I was an artist. At 15, I’d catch a 3:30 a.m. Greyhound for a four-hour trip to Oakland’s California College of the Arts to study figure drawing. This is all I ever wanted to do.
Current project: A collaboration with young and upcoming architect Bobby Cheng to create a high-end storefront in Singapore. For the façade of the building, I shaped honey-colored mirror and cast-glass modules in various geometric patterns that are reminiscent of gems.
Personal style: Since I am first-generation Austrian, I’m a precisionist by default; because I use light, I must be an optimist; and since I am enamored of indigenous cultural artifacts as well as midcentury and modern works, I must be an eclecticist.
Dream dinner party guest: I’d give anything to have a one-on-one conversation with Albert Einstein. He was more than an abstract mind; he was a humanitarian. LUXE INTERIORS

MAIN COURSE IT USED TO BE THAT THE KITCHEN WAS A NECESSARY EVIL, A UTILITARIAN VEHICLE TO PRODUCE FAMILY DINNERS AND HOLIDAY MEALS. IN HOMES TODAY, THOUGH, THE KITCHEN IS THE MAIN ATTRACTION AS TRENDS TOWARD OPEN LAYOUTS POSITION THE SPACE AS THEIR STAR.
OPEN CALLS Just like an occasional argument is necessary to strengthen a relationship by creating a situation where compromise can flourish, the same is true with design. This elegant kitchen in Seattle is the perfect example of how two varying viewpoints can result in a unified vision that transcends both of the original ideas. Architects Amy Janof and Helen Hald served as mediators for a husband and wife who were after an “industrial look” and a “warm, feminine aesthetic,” respectively. “We worked very closely with them,” says Janof. “They weren’t in total agreement at the beginning of the project, but we were able to meld together what they both wanted—an industrial, raw ceiling and black-paned windows for the husband and a pretty Ochre chandelier and beautiful Calacatta marble countertops for the wife.” The result is a space at the heart of the home’s open floor plan that combines sleek, modern design with retro sensibilities to great effect.
“The kitchen was designed by thinking about how it was going to be used and how each activity was going to look while it was going on.”

POINT OF VIEW IT WAS TRUE, FOR A LONG TIME, THAT THE ONLY WATER VIEWS YOU GOT WHILE IN THE BATHROOM WERE WHEN THE TUB WAS FULL. TODAY, HOWEVER, LARGER LAYOUTS AND OPENING UP THE SPACE TO THE OUTDOORS ESTABLISH A SPECIAL COMMUNION WITH THE OUTSIDE WORLD.
ON LOCATION Though the homeowners of a newly constructed modern gem could have chosen to build their family retreat anywhere, they chose Montauk, New York, with its unpredictable weather but gorgeous landscape. In fact, their love of the sleepy, seaside town is such that it became the basis for everything architect Paul Masi incorporated into his ambitious design. No place in the home, though, is a better homage to the location than the master bathroom—with its sliding pocket doors that open to a deck with stunning water views on one end of the room and an outdoor shower that encourages moonlight reverie on the other. “Everything we did was in an effort to pick up on cues they loved so much about the area,” explains Masi. “The colors we used are ones that show up on the beach here; we even steamed the floor and spent a lot of time developing a salt solution to patina the ceiling to get it the perfect color of driftwood.”
“Homeowners should create a hierarchy of how they want to live and what’s most important to them and distill it all into simple, strong ideas.” Paul Masi, Bates Masi Architects LLC Sag Harbor, NY

1920 S ,
IT IS UNLIKELY THAT EITHER REALIZED HOW
LEGENDARY THEIR COLLABORATION WOULD BECOME.
But
by his death in the mid ’50s, Joesler had designed hundreds of buildings in the scenic desert town, most under the aegis of Murphey. Today, theirs are hallowed names in these parts. The duo’s masterpiece, most locals agree, remains Catalina Foothills Estates near Sabino Canyon, a 7,000-acre tract that was intended to lure well-heeled Northerners seeking warm-weather second homes. Their formula’s success continues to this day, as evidenced by the couple who bought this Joesler-designed property as a vacation

Both fashion executives, the couple fell in love with the architect’s signature amalgamation of genres—primarily Spanish colonial revival, but with accents of Pueblo, Italianate and Deco, among others—which suited their divergent predilections: One is a traditionalist, the other a modernist. The home, built in 1935 for novelist Walt Coburn, was in good condition but needed a little freshening up, says the traditionalist partner. “It was more about peeling off the outer layers” of successive renovations, he explains. “We were fortunate that the original beauty underneath was still intact.” They were also fortunate to be in the good hands of an excellent design team that included New York-based designer Scott Sanders, an old friend, and builder John Woodin, whose experience restoring many 194 L U X E I N T E R I O R S

historic properties in Tucson proved invaluable in the house, where all the walls are 16-inch-thick adobe rather than wood frame and Sheetrock. “You don’t see internal adobe walls anymore,” says Woodin. “These types of techniques are starting to be forgotten.” Woodin restored the home’s intricately carved doors, sandblasted ceiling beams harvested from the surrounding Santa Catalina Mountains, and uncovered details such as a painted-over tile mural in the breakfast area. He also converted the old master bathroom into a walk-in closet and then co-opted about 30 feet of a 70-foot porch to create a more luxurious bath. The small kitchen was gutted and a drop ceiling removed to expose pitched wood beams. Kitchen designer Katrina L. Mullinax moved a refrigerator to the vestibule of the adjacent cellar steps, freeing up

GARDEN ACCESS Set against dynamic garden views, the breakfast area showcases the silhouette of an early 20th-century French vendange table purchased at The Yellow Monkey in Cross River, New York. A clay tile floor imparts a rustic character.
TUSCAN SUN The Tuscanny chandelier by Paul Ferrante presides over meals served on an antique dining table with a trestle base and a top cobbled from a 150-year-old piece of wood. Chairs are upholstered in Rogers & Goffigon Aurora linen; the geometric console is from Dos Gallos in Los Angeles.
SAINTED STYLE Developer John Murphey’s wife, Helen, was fond of tiled wall shrines from Mexico. The design team discovered this one of San Pasqual, patron saint of kitchens, under multiple coats of paint. It graces a wall of the breakfast area, where a custom wingback settee joins chairs from the 19th century.
WHITE OUT Kitchen designer Katrina L. Mullinax installed the room’s custom Crestwood cabinetry and designed a hood whose shape echoes the home’s fireplaces. Honed marble forms the countertops, while the backsplash is made up of Ken Mason’s Cal Rough tiles from Artesana Tile. Holophane pendants hang overhead.

more room. She then created custom cabinetry and installed an island. Additionally, says Mullinax, “White made the space feel so much larger.” For the rest of the home, the clients asked Sanders to create a sense of “approachable luxury.” Furniture and fabrics “had to relate to the architecture, but they did not necessarily need to be what would have originally been found in the home,” says Sanders. “We mixed antiques with fresh pieces—many made to look aged—as well as used old wood to make new furnishings.” The designer balanced the owners’ tastes, he says, “by mixing transitional and clean-lined traditional furnishings and keeping the palette very neutral with small amounts of color.”

LEVEL FIELD The backyard is a composition in levels of views and materials: Mountain panoramas rise above a vine-covered wall that then descends to a rock fountain and, eventually, the pool. Landscape designer Genevieve K. Rothkopf gave the space a tropical feel with plants transplanted from the front.
C O N T I N U E D F R O M P A G E 199
This careful use of color can first be seen in the home’s cozy Arizona room, where comfortable furnishings provide relaxed seating in a ginger hue. Red shades continue with cayenne-tinted draperies in the dining room and custom accent pillows on the breakfast area banquette. The master bedroom remains a soothing neutral retreat. Outside, landscape designer Genevieve K. Rothkopf resolved the problem of the front door. “It was enclosed by a courtyard, so as you drove up, it wasn’t clear which way you should go to get in,” recalls Rothkopf, who opened up the courtyard by creating a dramatically wide walkway.

FIRE WALL Resting poolside and gazing over a raised bed of flowers are two armless chaises from David Sutherland paired with a side table from Walters Wicker. A grouping of Balou open-weave furniture from Janus et Cie draws closer to the fireplace for cool desert nights.
DESERT DREAMING Rich textures in the master bedroom include linen from Rose Tarlow Melrose House on a custom settee by Doreen Interiors in New York, Lee Jofa angora mohair on the base of a Cosmo bed from Cisco Brothers, draperies in Cowtan & Tout linen and a silk-wool rug.
CALMING OASIS From their elegant Cheviot slipper tub, the homeowners can view the front garden, where Rothkopf cleaned up the overgrowth to showcase the desert flora, including pines, cacti and agave. The acacia wood stool is from Tucker Robbins; the limestone-tiled flooring from Fractured Earth Tile & Stone.

She also cut down and salvaged about 30 pine trees that obscured mountain views and moved tropical plants—palms, citrus and Australian bottle trees—from the front to the back, replacing them with more site-appropriate agaves, saguaros and ocotillos. In the end, the historic home in the desert received a stunning renovation that merges today’s comforts with the beauty of the past, and perhaps no one would be prouder with the results than the team of Joesler and Murphey. The couple were also searching for a laid-back lifestyle, a
chance to bask tranquilly in the Arizona sun without worrying about a yard to mow or what dog paws might do to the sofa. “We wanted a nice conversation piece,” Linda explains, “but also someplace to relax in at night and just watch television.” Enter interior designer Claire Ownby. Specializing in modern minimalist aesthetics, Ownby conceived a whole-house styling for the owners, who brought none of their own furniture or objects along with them. “We left everything behind to achieve an entirely new look,” Linda says. The result: a renovation completed before move-in that takes its inspiration from the elements—the muted tones of the desert landscape, the inviting serenity of water and the warmth of a fireplace, all tied together with clean lines and textured materials. “David was drawn to the minimal and modern, while Linda was a little fonder of the casual and comfortable,” Ownby remembers. “That was the fusion we had to balance.” INTERIOR DESIGN Claire Ownby, Ownby Design HOME BUILDER John Schultz, Schultz Development Corp. Builder John Schultz, a friend of the Langes for the past 25 years, helped oversee the home’s transformation. “It was very dramatic,” Schultz recalls. “We stripped it back to the drywall, moved quite a few walls and pretty much started with a whole new house.” Open spaces that slowly unfold onto each other now replace the home’s previously separate living areas. Then, after adding new glulam beams in the ceiling for column-free support, a massive sliding glass wall was constructed. The glass wall opens onto outdoor seating centered on a combination water fountain and fire display by landscape designer Paul Vecchia. “The backyard is north-exposed, which we really relish in the desert,” Vecchia explains. “It allows for a palette of tropical plants, more lush like Southern California, less like the xeriscape we do a lot of here in the desert.”

Inside, Ownby created a series of small backlit alcoves in the living room wall that surround the television, not only to display art and objects, but also to de-emphasize the screen and highlight a sense of togetherness with the furnishings, which include a cluster of creamtoned sofas and custom-designed reclining club chairs. A striped wool rug on the limestone floor grounds the setting, while a two-sided floor-to-ceiling fireplace clad in Marbella shellstone (a natural stone infused with ancient coral) separates the space from the adjacent family room. Steps away, in the nearby kitchen, a slab of claro walnut veneer is suspended between two islands crafted from brush-finished blue limestone to create a dining table with six upholstered chairs. For the private spaces, both the master bedroom and the ample guest room, Ownby incorporated textured wallpapers—woven fiber and silk in the former, a natural woven grass cloth in the latter—to add warmth

A trio of lava stone spheres from Restoration Hardware, placed on the floating blue limestone vanity fabricated by Bell Stone, evokes the rocky landscape outside.
MAXIMUM EXPOSURE In the master bedroom, a charcoal-toned tufted headboard and Zimmer + Rohde’s polyester drapery panels with raised chenille detail create visual complexity. The muted tones of Donghia’s Hemp wallpaper and a wool-silk carpet from Azadi Fine Rugs contrast with the darkly stained exposed-grain oak floors.
IN LINE A wall-to-wall vanity mirror from Stravitz Glass follows the line of the master bathroom’s clerestory windows. Rift-cut oak cabinetry with blue limestone counters continues the home’s principal surfaces, while clear and frosted glass pendants shine over a pair of Decolav sinks with polished-chrome faucets from Clyde Hardware.

to the spaces. Creative lighting, such as Mason jar amber glass pendants in the powder room, combines with exposed-grain oak flooring to foster a casual elegance. Above the his-and-hers vanities in the master bath, Ownby installed long clerestory windows “to allow the natural light to flood in while maintaining complete privacy,” says the designer, who along with Schultz, reconfigured the entire master suite. “The minute we bought the house, Claire made the project so easy,” says the satisfied lady of the house. “She just came up with fabulous ideas and really pulled it all together. I think of it as a timeless, classic house—something we can live with for a very long time.” L

WHEN A ONCE COMPETITIVE COWBOY DECIDED TO TRADE IN HIS ROPES FOR A SET OF CLUBS, HE AND HIS FAMILY PURCHASED THIS STUNNING VACATION RESIDENCE IN SCOTTSDALE ’ S PRESTIGIOUS DC RANCH GOLF COMMUNITY .
Upon making the decision to renovate the home almost five years later, they called on interior designer Holly Ogden, who had become acquainted with the family when she fashioned the interiors of their primary residence on a large farm in Oregon. With a goal to spend Thanksgiving in their newly appointed retreat, the owners gave her four months to complete the job—and Ogden was definitely up to the challenge. “They had decided it was time to give the home some love,” Ogden says. Originally constructed by the design/build team at Calvis Wyant, the stucco and stone house—built in the style of a ranch hacienda—nearly disappears into its surrounding desert landscape. Facing east toward the McDowell Mountain range, the house is set in the glow of the intense desert sun, yet the interiors remained heavy and dated. “This is a residence that is saturated with natural light 360 days a year,” INTERIOR DESIGN Holly Ogden, Wiseman & Gale Interiors HOME BUILDER Andrew Werner, Cimarron Ridge Construction BEDROOMS 4

LIGHTEN UP In lieu of a heavy sofa, interior designer Holly Ogden varied the comfortable seating in the living room, placing blue wingback chairs, Lee Industries patterned loungers and Hickory Chair’s splayed-arm bench around a large wood coffee table. The abaca rug from The Floor Collection provides neutral ground.

Ogden says. “So it was a shame that it was so dark. The goal was to make it brighter and more youthful, sophisticated but laid-back for a young family of four.” Once she had the green light and a fixed deadline, Ogden assembled her team, which included general contractor Andrew Werner, and mapped out the significant phases of the job, ultimately completing the renovation on time. “We wanted it to look as though it was originally built this way, that it not look remodeled,” says Werner. “Holly has a great understanding of construction, and having a good team made a lot of difference.” LUXE INTERIORS

Among the substantial modifications were replacing most of the home’s original travertine stone flooring with 8-inch hickory boards, gutting the powder room, and updating the kitchen with whitewashed cabinetry and new backsplash tiles and appliances. The team also simplified much of the home’s ornately detailed ironwork, including the front door’s Mexican-style grille, which Ogden removed to admit more light and allow for a cleaner look. Dark wall surfaces, some finished with Venetian plaster, were repainted in a custom-formulated parchment color that, together with comfortable furnishings and splashes of blue, orange and green, “brought the interiors to life,” Ogden says.

PAINT JOB Ogden repainted the kitchen cabinets in soft cream to lighten up the space. A backsplash of Tabarka tiles from Craftsman Court Ceramics, a black-painted island and rattan bar chairs add a warm, organic ambiance juxtaposed with Arteriors Home’s industrial pendants.

Working closely with the owners, Ogden channeled both their whimsical sensibilities and taste for old-world relics. To this end, the designer added flourishes of color, as seen in artist Lisa Neimeth’s custom ceramic plates displayed in the double-height living room’s built-in bookshelves. She also accessorized the room with unique artwork and one-of-a-kind antiques that include an old grain storage vessel from Africa. An antique French work table was put into the den and X-ray photographs of flora into the master bedroom. To add warmth, Ogden chose grass-cloth wallcoverings and translucent draperies made from Mexican cloth. Antique and organic rugs complement the cheerful palette. Along the way, Ogden accommodated specific requests, such as a desire to find a place for a large antique cabinet on wheels—in the renovated powder room—and a necessity for a playful space where the owners’ two

THE NATURAL The Southwest-style stucco and stacked-stone ranch house built by Calvis Wyant sits in a natural tableau of vegetation indigenous to the Sonoran Desert, including mesquite and Palo Verde trees, several varieties of sagebrush and the ubiquitous saguaro cactus.
FEMININE MYSTIQUE Decorative touches the likes of a soft green tufted bench and an antique Oushak rug lend a subtle femininity to the master bedroom, which may be the reason the wife calls this room her favorite part of the house. X-ray photographs of a tulip and a hibiscus bud by Steven N. Meyers flank the iron canopy bed.
IN FLIGHT An intricately detailed iron sculpture by Joe Walters, purchased at CostelloChilds Contemporary, depicts a pair of birds fluttering near their nests. Ogden hung the piece, which appears suspended in air, in an arched niche just outside the master bedroom.

young daughters could work on their art. The finished “art room” features an easel and a menagerie of fabricated animal heads adorning the wall. Ultimately, Ogden’s work proved so successful that her clients say they are now using the home far more frequently. “We’re very laidback and family-centric,” says the lady of the house, “and Holly has given us the perfect informal setting that suits us now that we’ve come off the rodeo trail.” L

new home, I’ll choose individual pieces from a variety of sources so that it feels as if the client has traveled the world to amass an assorted collection.” Dyer, based in both Scottsdale and West Hollywood, California, takes this approach with all of her projects, yet it is particularly relevant to the elegant interiors she created for Roger Hansen’s tri-level home in

Paradise Valley. “I was referred to Jennifer by another client of hers who actually had a very modern house,” says Hansen, a Minnesota businessman who lives here part-time. “I was looking for something more traditional but could see that she had a very good eye. I only told her, ‘Don’t give me too many choices,’ and then just sat back and entrusted her with the job.” INTERIOR DESIGN Jennifer Dyer, Jeneration Interiors ARCHITECTURE Rod Cullum, Cullum Homes HOME BUILDER Rod Cullum, Cullum Homes LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE Paul Miller, MDM Landscape Development BEDROOMS 4

Originally designed and built by Rod Cullum before it was owned by Hansen, the house has an exterior architecture that features natural stone veneer, mulled windows with deep window wells, large overhangs and barrel-vaulted ceilings. “The home was intended to be Tuscan,” says Dyer, “but I felt that the interiors should look more Spanish Mediterranean.” So, the designer began pouring through numerous books for inspiration, studying that particular style to get a feel for its period elements and characteristics. She even changed the home’s front doors to showcase more of a Spanish aesthetic.

CAMELBACK RISING The distinct hump of Camelback Mountain provides a scenic backdrop for a home that combines Mediterranean and Southwest sensibilities. Landscape designer Paul Miller selected seasonal plant variations dependent on what time of the year the homeowner is in residence.
SOFT SPOKEN Incorporating a light palette of muted hues, designer Jennifer Dyer custom designed most of the furnishings found in the formal living room, including the tufted ottoman upholstered in Glant fabric. A period oil on canvas silently watches over from above the limestone fireplace.

fixtures and vanities, were sent off to the local Habitat for Humanity and replaced. Leftover exterior stone was brought in and used for the walls of the living room and bar area—similar brickwork appears in the dining room ceiling—and the rooms were directed toward the spectacular vistas. “We wanted to capture the impact of Camelback Mountain in the distance,” says Cullum, whom Dyer brought back on board the now lived-in residence to turn her interior detailing into reality. “To that end, we created large mechanical glass walls and used every opportunity to capture the views.”

Due to the surrounding landscape’s lack of color, Dyer incorporated a palette of light celadon, deep green, blue and cream to warm up the interiors. Dark moss green chairs are a focal point of the dining room, while an antique blue and gray flat-weave rug establishes the master bedroom’s soft, casual coloration. “Consistency is critical,” Dyer explains. “I believe as a designer that once you start with a color scheme, you have to carry it throughout the home. Otherwise, there is no connection.” To establish the tone for the house, Dyer went straight to its center— the kitchen—and its knotty alder wood cabinetry. “In order to make the kitchen distinct, I hired specialty finishers to stain and glaze the

alder wood cabinetry and built-ins,” she says. “The end result is a green-blue finish that looks well-aged.” Other distinguishing details include a new French stone hood and a thick, highly finished walnut top for the island. In keeping with Dyer’s “collected” look, most of the home’s key furniture pieces were either purchased antiques or custom-made to Dyer’s precise specifications. In the formal living room, a pair of custom cream distressed cabinets flanking the stone fireplace features mirrored doors faced with bronze screens and vintage handles. The dining room table, a custom piece with a crackle finish, was inspired by a similar one that Dyer saw in a Kelly Wearstler book.

TWIN SET Custom-designed twin beds crafted in Peru with alder wood frames offer extra sleeping space in another guest room. The flat-weave rug and linen drapery fabric are both by Michael S Smith; the rug was purchased at Mansour in Los Angeles. The woven-wire table lamp is from Bungalow.
MASTERFULLY PLANNED In every space, Dyer started the dÊcor with the rugs, such as the master bedroom’s antique flat-weave carpet that sits on the hickory floor. The room is tastefully furnished with a combination of custom and antique pieces. The British colonial-style bed and Moroccan bone end table are from Susanne Hollis.
IN SINK The Mediterranean-inspired powder room includes a stone trough sink from Relics with a French outdoor garden faucet from Compas in Los Angeles, as well as hand-painted tiling from Tabarka Studio. Furnishings and accessories procured through various antiques shops across the United States and abroad prevail throughout. “It gives the place a much more unique feel,” Dyer says. After almost two years, the home Dyer delivered to her client—after weekly emails and monthlong Arizona stays—was spot-on. “I’m really proud of it,” she says. “Because I had complete trust from the client, there was no second-guessing. It just fell into place.” L

13825 North Northsight Boulevard, Suite120 Scottsdale, AZ 85260 480.575.8448 claire@ownbydesign.com ownbydesign.com The irony of Claire Ownby’s favorite quote isn’t lost on those who’ve hired her firm to bring their luxury interior dreams to life. While “less is more” certainly fuels her residential design aesthetic, it doesn’t come close to describing all that she does for her clients. “I strive to create a space that is a true reflection of our clients’ vision,” says the owner of Ownby Design. “It’s most important that clients feel a connection to the end result.” Her award-winning team’s clean, minimalist approach—no matter the style of home—has sealed that connection. The level of detail and budget-saving efficiency that Ownby brings to every project makes her one of the most sought after designers in the valley.
“My passion for design is fueled by a relentless pursuit for perfection.” I would design an outdoor shower into every project if I could!

What led you to your current profession? I was born to design interiors. As a little girl, I remember rearranging the furniture in both my parents’ and grandparents’ homes.
2.
How do you stay abreast of new trends? I try to stay away from following most trends. I’m more drawn to the reinterpretation of timeless classics.
3.
Why should a prospective client choose your firm? I want clients to choose our firm based on feeling a good connection with our team and approach. This process is so personal—you should definitely get a sense of connection with your interior designer.

WOODWORKING LINEAR FINE WOODWORKING It’s one thing to bring great passion for design and detail to a project, as the experienced team at Linear Fine Woodworking always does. But it’s quite another to raise woodworking to an art form. That’s where the skilled craftsmen at Linear, led by Allan Rosenthal (himself a third-generation woodworker), distinguish themselves time and again with one-of-a-kind products and unparalleled processes. “Our clients have an appreciation for quality,” says Rosenthal, whose team has worked together for 15 years. “In turn, we treat the client the way we would want to be treated.” The Phoenix-based firm, which handles residential and commercial projects throughout the greater Southwest, adorns entire homes with exquisite, contemporary wood cabinetry, furniture and a variety of woodworking projects—from inspired kitchens and elegant bedrooms to custom wall units and dramatic dining rooms. “We enjoy doing what many shops do not want to bother with,” says Rosenthal, whose team has earned multiple ASID product awards. “There is a big difference between making boxes and doing woodwork,” he added. And there’s an even bigger difference in the level of detail that Rosenthal’s team provides, which works with builders, architects, designers and private clients. Look no further than the signature exotic veneers that Linear Fine Woodworking creates as well as the 3-D renderings the firm makes for clients, so that they can visualize the projects. “We don’t settle for anything less than making a client’s dream come true.” Allan Rosenthal 2825 South 46th Street Phoenix, AZ 85040 allan@linearfinewoodworking.com linearfinewoodworking.com
“If a client has an eye for detail, quality and service, then we’re a great fit for them.”

FEATURES: This kitchen features grey satin finish cabinetry with whitequartz countertops, a floating island and stainless steel legs. Top section of the full-height cabinetry has Alumisteel back with Halogen lighting above, and routed lines in doors blend to look like they are all drawers.
FEATURES: These free-form islands are a combination of Swiss Pear wood and Macasar Ebony with silver reveals. The wavy inlayed upper cabinetry in the background is a combination of Swiss Pear wood and Tamo Ash with Macasar Ebony light bridges.
Q A Q+A
What distinguishes your work in terms of material selection and product quality? We use a lot of exotic veneers, and we press or lay up our own veneers. We also never skimp on state-of-the-art equipment needed for our specialized work.
What are your favorite types of styles to work on and why?
How would you describe your clientele?
I love doing the bookmatched (grain-sequenced) veneers that we do. There is no hiding an imperfection. It’s either right or wrong; it’s there for everyone to see.
One factor links our clients: They expect high quality and won’t settle for anything less than our team coming as close to perfection as man-made products can get.
FEATURES: This vanity is made out of an aniline dyed grey Birdseye Maple with a dull rubbed finish. It has LED under lighting, and all drawers are cut around the plumbing to maximize space. We also made the custom mirror frames that match the cabinetry.
FEATURES: The goal was to make this room look like a modern study. We used Ribbon Sapele as the main material and incorporated barn-style doors with stainless steel hardware to close off the room but still allow for light to pass through them.
FEATURES: Here, we wrapped two walls with our cabinetry, with radius back panels, floating shelves and a curved pencil drawer. Many of Halogen lights were incorporated to make the woods move as you walk by the unit. The Makore looks like a hologram as you walk by.

Q+A
WOODESIGN For over 33 years, Bernie Becker, Larry Langhurst and their 10-person team of inhouse craftsmen have redefined contemporary woodworking and installation. Their innovative approach combines unique engineering capabilities, creating elegance and simplicity for even the most complex projects–from kitchens, bedrooms, custom doors, wine cellars and entire homes to expansive commercial assignments. While Becker leads the fabrication intricacies of each project, Langhurst outlines the big picture desires into specific design features. Using both modern and traditional techniques and equipment—including in-house CAD drawings, cuttingedge computer-aided equipment, an automotive-style spray booth for buffed and polished finishes and the professional skills of its experienced team—Woodesign transforms nature’s best raw materials into works of art. Woodesign’s signature on each project symbolizes their commitment to quality without compromise.

Q A Q+A
GOODALL CUSTOM CABINETRY It often begins, simply enough, with scribbles on a piece of paper—a still-unformed dream that, in the hands of the talented craftsmen at Goodall Wood Creations, will ultimately transform into a residential reality. That is the goal that not only has guided owners Kenneth and Shannon Goodall since launching their firm in 2003 but that also has resonated with discriminating clients throughout the greater Phoenix area. “We pride ourselves on communicating all that is possible; we want our clients to understand every option and have multiple choices,” Kenneth says. The choices at Goodall couldn’t be more inspiring—dramatic furnishings, millwork and accessories for kitchens, bathrooms, closets, wine rooms, home theaters and much more in styles ranging from Old World and Mediterranean to Tuscan and contemporary. The products at Goodall, distinguished by their customized fit and finish, are hand-crafted using only the highest quality materials. “I have dedicated myself and my team to building a company that is not just a façade of pretty pictures and impressive catch phrases,” Kenneth says.
What are the main determinants in your creative process? We strive to create the vision of our client. The most important thing, for our team, is customer satisfaction.
What are the key influences in your work today? Our staff is on the cutting edge of what is trending, and what styles and designers are emerging. We’re inspired by that, as well as pieces we see on our travels.
