ISE stands deliver maximum impact BY ELLIOT HERMAN Yesterday’s ISE 2018 Stand Design Awards saw a shortlist of 33 exhibitors whittled down to four winners. With almost 1,300 companies on the show floor, there was certainly a lot for the judges to look at, so stand judging was split into four categories based on size. The awards process was managed by EXHIBITOR magazine. Editor Travis Stanton told the ISE Daily: “We visit many exhibitions around the world and ISE is one of the best when it comes to the excellence of its stands. The standard was very high for all those shortlisted.” The panel chose the winners based on a series of criteria, including effective design realisation/fabrication; integration of technology; use of space; and overall impactful presence. The winners were: • Small (49sqm or less): Lithoss • Medium (50-199sqm): Genelec • Large (200-399sqm): Shure Europe • XL (400sqm or more): NEC Display Solutions Managing director of ISE Mike Blackman commented: “We see the quality of stand build growing every year – it creates a real ‘wow factor’ for the attendees. “This competition recognises the investment our exhibitors are making.”

The art of storytelling

‘Once up a Time’ is an animation running on the Epson stand (1-H90). It features six of the company’s EB-L25000U 25,000-lumen, WUXGA resolution projectors using Rear Pro shortthrow lenses. The EB-L25000U also features an integrated camera for automatic image correction

CEDIA emerging technology head: ‘Create ecosystems that improve lives’ BY ANN-MARIE CORVIN Addressing delegates during one of the free 20-minute CEDIA talks at ISE yesterday, Dave Pedigo, emerging technology director for the association, urged home technologists to create ecosystems that not only improve lives, but also save them. In his ‘Improving the Quality of People’s Lives though IoT’ session, Pedigo argued there are many products which could be viewed as a novelty, but when configured with others “could both improve life and extend it.” He spoke of his own experience of caring for his 77-year-old father who had been using a torch in the night to try and find the light switch. Now he uses voice control with Philips Hue lights which can be voice controlled via Amazon Alexa. Pedigo expects to see more

products paying attention to blood sugar, blood pressure and heart rates, and that these consumer devices are gaining approval from professional associations. “Apple’s watch, which can detect an atrial fibrillation heart attack, has been approved by the FDA – and it’s really hard to get approval from them.” Other off-the-shelf innovations include a baby monitor which can help prevent cot death by measuring how much oxygen is going through an infant’s blood; and a hip airbag for the elderly that can detect when its user is about to suffer a fall injury. He was also impressed with VR applications that can help patients manage pain by transporting them into other environments. While some of these products are still expensive, Pedigo said that there will be opportunities out there “in the next 10-25 years.”

Designing stadiums, and making them work and pay BY CHRIS FORRESTER Yesterday’s Sports Venue & Fan Engagement conference (organised by SVG Europe and PanStadia and Arena Management magazine) examined the challenges of designing and re-equipping sports stadiums and making them pay. An expert panel (Paul Brislin, director and architect at Arup; Peter Ayres, structural engineer at AECOM; and Mark Kelly, MD at Bristol’s Ashton Gate stadium) and moderator John Sheehan, editor of PanStadia & Arena Management, delivered a fascinating account of the many difficulties they face in managing major ‘elite’ projects as well as community or localised schemes. “You have to know who the

operator is and it isn’t always easy,” said Brislin, “National, very high-profile stadiums, for example, sometimes feel threatened by having to face commercial pressures and tend not to be flexible.” At the other end of the scale, smaller community-based stadia see architects having to cope with “basketball in the morning, an ice show in the afternoon, and a pop concert in the evening” demands, in an attempt to make the venue pay for itself. “In fact I believe that such community projects should be paid for by the municipality, otherwise it is very difficult to make money,” said Ayres. However, Ashton Gate’s Kelly explained that such flexibility drives his team forward, and the spin-

off benefits could be extremely rewarding. The site is already home to football and rugby, but also has a vibrant coffee shop on site that is earning cash seven days a week, and supplies an exhibition area; the VIP boxes have been built as boardrooms, and it is possible for celebrity chefs to cater for fans. “Now we’re targeting 35,000-seater arena music shows.” The panel said location is key to the design considerations (“Moscow is different to Atlanta”), but there were definite trends including the move to build more VIP ‘tunnel’ and ‘field’ suites, but operators should always remember that provision for TV is vital, and broadcasters want a sea of happy fans, not rows of concrete boxes.

Catching them young BY IAN McMURRAY Now a well-established event on the calendar, the ISE Future AV Professionals Programme took place at ISE yesterday. It is aimed at those in their late teens to early 20s who are either about to attend, or are attending, university or college – and is designed to show them the possibilities the AV industry offers for an interesting, exciting and rewarding career. This year has seen some 60-70 students from the Netherlands and Germany taking part – with some establishments returning for a third time – from a range of academic disciplines. The programme is organised jointly by AVIXA and CEDIA, with assistance of AV profesionals from LANG, Adam Hall, Pyramid

Group, Electrosonic, Renox and AVOne. Joseph Valerio, director of workforce development at AVIXA, said: “This year, we’re doing things a little bit differently. We’re helping them interact with some young professionals who do what they do every day, as well as meet with some business owners. Where we can, we’re homing in on their specific interests – we have a group, for example, who are particularly interested in digital signage and content creation.” According to Valerio, participants in the programme are frequently overwhelmed by the size and scale of ISE. “They’re astonished by the quality of companies, the quality of technologies and the quality of the experiences offered,” he said.

“More than anything, they’re simply mesmerised by how shiny it is – and also how massive the facility is. Navigating it as a young person is a challenge in itself – and we treat them like adults by asking them to be back at a certain place at a certain time. Even old hands at the show would find that difficult,” he laughed. For Valerio, part of the value of the session is to show students what lies behind everyday experiences they take for granted, such as digital signage at a bus stop or audio at a football match – and show them how they can be part of creating those experiences. “We know that students go back home fired up and engaged about what they’ve seen during the day, and ready to pursue their careers in our industry,” he concluded.

Stand: 15-G225 Imagine making a presentation on a whiteboard and being able to share it with anyone who has access to a web browser – and all in real-time. Kaptivo does this and more. Kaptivo is an eponymously-named solution that bridges the digital world with the conventional dry whiteboard, and is aimed at corporate and education markets. Adrian Cable, president, CTO and co-founder of Kaptivo, told the ISE Daily why the solution was developed: “We wanted users to be able to share what they write on a standard whiteboard with others, quickly and easily. In order to achieve this, we set ourselves some tough conditions: users wouldn’t need software, apps, electronic pens or a special whiteboard to use Kaptivo. We wanted the process to be as frictionless as possible.” The aim was also to make Kaptivo affordable; prices start from less than €400. The only equipment required is a WiFi-enabled digital camera, which fits onto any whiteboard. The camera contains image processing and computer vision algorithms that constantly analyse the images

Jeff Hastings, CEO, BrightSign

The future’s bright for media players

BRIGHTSIGN Stand: 8-G240

Found around the world, BrightSignpowered digital signage can be seen “in every vertical market”. The American company’s products boast an operating system purpose-built for digital signage. The BrightSign stand, located in the centre of Hall 8, features zoned areas highlighting each of its product ranges. Launching at ISE, the company’s new Series 4 line of digital signage media players are integral to the defined sections. Four models in the BrightSign Series 4 range are newly designed to support Dolby Vision and HDR10+, while the XT line supports PoE+ and HDMI to deliver live TV to end-points, either via an HDMI cable or streaming over a network. The new players continue to use the patented industrial design of the Series 3 players. BrightSign is also showcasing three of its BrightSign Built-In DSM (digital signage module) integrated solutions. These include the iDisplay by Outform, as well as a range of displays from AVNU and Industrial Image. The Bright Wall zone features three sections of videowall comprising various panel sizes and pattern configurations. Seventeen panels are in use – all run by their own player, to demonstrate that as many screens as required can be used without loss of performance and resolution.

A menu and ordering platform is in another zone on BrightSign’s stand. This area presents a novel option for food ordering, ideal for fast food restaurants but one that can be used in a variety of other applications. The user can select their menu choice, pay and print their order ticket. The order is automatically sent to the POS display behind the counter. Jeff Hastings, CEO of BrightSign said: “We’ve gone past the point of digital signage and now have a fully interactive and flexible option. We are now able to integrate with other platforms and options and of course can connect with lighting, audio and pretty much anything else you can think of!” Another zone on the stand has been completely customer-led. Hastings explains: “Our customers were demanding small form factor displays without having players on the desktop or clogging up work areas.” BrightSign worked with iDisplay to create a 10.1in tablet. Hastings continues: “Designed as an interactive commercial display that uses capacitive touch, built in WiFi and LAN, the iDisplay tablet also has integrated features that work in either landscape or portrait format. The HTML5 rendering engine supports full HD and is compatible with all BrightSign software, services and supported CMS platforms.” The final zone on the stand is a room booking tablet which allows the user to schedule and reserve meetings from the panels at any time.

LCDs can be resized without harm

DISPLAY SOLUTIONS on the board and only extract written ink information – the shadows and reflections caused by someone standing in front of the board are ignored. The data is streamed to a cloud server and authorised users equipped with a web browser can instantly access the presentation. Kaptivo also automatically captures everything written on the whiteboard and organises it into a series of slides, which can be converted to a PDF file and emailed to all the participants. “The automatic note-taking facility means people don’t have to take

photos of the presentation,” said Cable. Kaptivo has generated a lot of interest at ISE 2018. Cable said: “We’ve had phenomenal interest from VARs and distributors, and from end users in a variety of vertical markets. Companies where information security is important are very interested. At present, people are taking photos of whiteboards and leaving the office with confidential information stored on unsecure personal devices. With Kaptivo, an organisation can keep that information within its entire IT infrastructure.”

Stand: 15-H284 LCD screens come in all shapes and sizes these days, thanks to resizing LCD panels, which are cut from larger panels. Advances in technology mean that cutting LCD panels does not compromise quality or performance. At ISE 2018, Display Solutions is showing the Litemax SSD5197-INU, a 51.9in resizing LCD with a 16:4.4 aspect ratio. The display has been produced by cutting a third off the top of a 65in LCD panel. According to the company, this delivers a ‘sharp, clear screen that can be viewed in bright sunlight’.

Display Solutions commercial manager Brendan O’Reilly said: “The product is designed for outdoor use – for example, in a train station, where it could run 24/7. The mean time between failures for this panel is 100,000 hours. For most products of this type, it’s more like 50,000-60,000 hours, so it’s a significant step up and means that the display should run for years.” Brendan O’Reilly, Display Solutions commercial manager (left)

Delta Media Server shows off VR and 3D capabilities

Sensor responds to light, motion ELKO EP

Real time, VR, 3D-depth compositing, custom audio mapping and pre-visualisation goes wild

Stand 1-Q70 A new light dimming sensor from the iNELS Air product group is designed to capture the intensity of outdoor ambient light and react flexibly to it. According to the company, it is suitable for both indoor and outdoor use. The smart sensor communicates over the Sigfox and LoRa networks up to 35km away. Installation is said to be very simple. After activation, data from the sensor is sent via BTS transmitters to the control server and further into cloud storage, from where users can login and the data is displayed on a smartphone or tablet.

“The platform that controls the device can intelligently control the intensity of light: ambient light and motion increase or decrease the luminous flux in the designated area as needed,” sales manager Radek Hartman told the ISE Daily. “The system illuminates the light with the approach of a pedestrian and then slowly turns off to save energy. “ The light dimming sensor belongs to the iNELS Air range, which can be applied to all types of areas, from flats and offices to large commercial buildings and smart cities. In addition to the sensor, you can find, for example, a flood or motion detector or an air quality sensor.

7THSENSE DESIGN Stand: 12-A64 Advanced media serving company 7thSense Design has launched a wide range of new system and hardware features here at ISE, including VR integration. The company is demonstrating Delta Media Server’s capabilities in addition to media playback and management. Visitors to the 7thSense ISE stand can experience hands-on demonstrations of Delta Media Server, including its integration with a number of industry VR headsets such as StarVR, HTC Vive and Oculus Rift.

This feature can be used for display system pre-visualisation and analysis, and can also be used for multi-user VR experiences and attractions. There is also a disk technology option for up to 50% more disk performance from a single server, a new GUI for distributing files around a set of Delta Servers – giving users full control and management over multiple servers from a single server location – and a sneak peek of the next-generation DeltaGUI. With DeltaGUI, the Delta Servers management interface enables direct access to a detailed configuration of all servers and handles warping

and blending of all display channels, compositing multiple sources, display configuration and management, spline editing, mesh editing and dome projector layout design. John Higgins, product manager at 7thSense, said: “Delta Media Server is renowned for delivering the highest performance, pixelperfect uncompressed playback. Our new features and on-stand demonstrations highlight its strengths as a flexible, configurable media management and playback engine that handles all pixel and audio processing to guarantee the best display performance, no matter what shape or size surface it might be.”

Increased noise immunity for optical clarity and performance ZYTRONIC Stand: 8-M310 Unveiling a new range of multi-touch controllers, Zytronic is aiming to raise the bar for design, speed, accuracy and performance of large-format touchscreens. In response to a growing demand for all-glass fronted touchscreens with ultra-narrow borders, the Mark Perry and Sue Jordan, sales managers for Zytronic new touch controller that Zytronic is launching at ISE allows touch sensors to be designed technologies such as RFID, NGC with reduced non-active borders – and Qi wireless battery charging less than 10mm on a 55in screen. to be placed adjacent to, or even The new ZXY500 is a controller implemented within, the active area based around a unique and without impairing the touchscreen’s proprietary ASIC. It features a higher clarity and performance. These noise immunity, allowing other technologies emit signals that

can often interfere with the operation of conventional projected capacitive touchscreens; however, the controller has been designed to reduce this susceptibility. Mark Perry, sales manager for Zytronic explained the company’s history: “Starting in 2000, Zytronic was originally a glass processing and machining company. “Since then, we have evolved the company by taking our expertise, combining it with touch technology and developing our own electronics. “We’re now able to offer durable, customised projected capacitive touchscreens with almost no borders, enhancing the capabilities and designs of interactive videowalls and touchtables.”

Leaping to 8K XILINX Stand 15-K222 The pro AV industry never stands still when it comes to picture quality. While many consumers have yet to embrace 4K video, the professional market already has its eyes on the next big leap in image quality – 8K. “The entire industry is moving to 8K, from camera sensors to display panels,” Ramesh Lyer, director pro AV and broadcast vertical marketing at Xilinx, told the ISE Daily. “The Tokyo Olympics will see 8K becoming more and more important as broadcasters use the technology. 8K requires some type of connectivity for the video feed, and we have been investing in DisplayPort and HDMI technologies for the last five years.” The fruits of this work are unveiled at ISE 2018, as Xilinx

demonstrates for the first time a DisplayPort 1.4 FPGA core (chip) for transmitting and receiving uncompressed media streams up to 8K. “We’ve done a lot of testing and we are proud to showcase something that is production-ready and which our customers can go to market almost immediately,” added Lyer. Xilinx is also showcasing a 4K-over-IP solution. “Traditionally, pro AV has relied on proprietary methods for transporting AV over a network,’ explained Lyer. “But with the cost of Gigabit switches dropping dramatically, why not adopt standard IP-based transport?” Xilinx‘s 4K AVoIP solution uses the SMPTE 2110 standard, adopted by the broadcast industry for transporting media over IP, and pro AV seemed an obvious market. “So, we are showing the first implementation of SMPTE 2110 here at ISE.”

SHOWEVENTS TODAY

The art of Creating Nighttime Spectaculars A new half-day conference at ISE today will explore an exciting and burgeoning development in the visitor attractions sector

I

n 2014, under the leadership of new CEO Bob Montgomery, the Longleat cultural and wildlife visitor attraction in southern England staged a Festival of Light as part of its winter programme – featuring Europe’s largest display of Chinese lanterns and a 70m-long illuminated dragon. The country house and safari park saw a doubling of visitor numbers for the period of the exhibition, which contributed to a 7% increase in visitors over the year. Not surprisingly, Longleat continued with the Festival of Light since then, featuring characters from Beatrix Potter stories and classic fairytales in subsequent years. This nighttime attraction has contributed to the venue seeing four successive years of record revenues. Montgomery will be one of the speakers at blooloopLIVE at ISE: Creating Nighttime Spectaculars, a new experiential-themed conference debuting today at ISE 2018. Longleat’s technical partner for its nocturnal attractions is London-based audiovisual company LCI Productions; Rob Paul, a director of LCI Productions, will also be on the platform. blooloopLIVE at ISE will explore other key examples of successful nighttime events and see contributions from operators and from the leading AV players involved in their creation. The half-day event will discuss the trends involved in delivering these afterdark spectaculars – which can range from

simple live performances to complex, multifaceted productions using video mapping, lighting and laser effects. Also speaking at the event will be computer animation pioneer and projection mapping expert Philippe Bergeron, the president of Paintscaping. Bergeron has worked with some of the biggest names in the entertainment industry on projection mapping projects, creating unforgettable live events across the world. “The work

produced by Philippe and Paintscaping is phenomenal,” commented Charles Read, managing director of blooloop. In his presentation, he will highlight some recent projects – including how he and his team brought a mountain to life. Peter Cliff, creative director at attractions technology leader Holovis, will describe the work his team has carried out at the British theme park Fantasy Island. This has had the result of increasing the

ollowing last night’s performance of all the finalists’ entries, the winner of the World Masters of Projection Mapping competition will be announced at a special awards ceremony today. The competition set an unusual challenge: creating video art that is not only mapped onto the irregular three-dimensional exterior of the EYE Filmmuseum, but can also be viewed from multiple locations. Last night saw audiences enjoy the projections from boats on the River IJ, as well as from nearby vantage points such as the quay at Central Station.

Work by the five finalists – Alida Dors and Manuel Rodrigues, Eder Santos, Florian and Michael Quistrebert, Geert Mul, and Telcosystems – has been showing on rotation since 12 January. At today’s ceremony, the five finalists will present their entries to the audience. They will also talk about the inspiration behind their artworks and the production techniques they have used, before the overall winner is announced. The competition jury is led by Amsterdam Light Festival creative director Lennart Booij. Other members are Jaap Guldemond,

average duration of visits, increasing per-head spend and producing tangible ROI benefits. A key element of his presentation will cover how Holovis used the digital medium to bring new life to the park’s existing infrastructure. Jean-Christophe Canizares, CEO of ECA2, will highlight the importance of story in the creation of multimedia spectaculars across the world. Last year, the French company worked on the opening ceremony of the 17th FINA World Aquatics Championships, transforming the city of Budapest and the River Danube into a blizzard of colour and spectacle. Read concluded: “With key developments in the attractions industry meaning many theme parks and visitor attractions have turned towards true multi-day destination resorts, live night-time spectaculars are often an integral part of the mix. The blooloopLIVE conference represents a great opportunity to hear from the operators and AV companies creating such memorable events.” blooloopLIVE at ISE: Creating Nighttime Spectaculars is sponsored by Christie and Laservision. blooloopLIVE starts at 09:30 in Room E102, and concludes just before the World Masters of Projection Mapping Awards ceremony. Tickets are €150 (€125 for AVIXA and CEDIA members). Registration is at http://bit.ly/blooloop-ise.

SHOWHIGHLIGHTS TODAY

Today’s Professional Development picks Before ISE 2018 began, we asked some attendees to pick out a session from today’s AVIXA, CEDIA and Show Floor Theatre programmes that particularly spoke to them. Here’s what they chose

Anders Strømholt, an independent consultant/ system designer from Denmark, recommends: Behind the Scenes of HDR and HDCP 2.2 Presenter: Szabolcs Turi, Lightware Visual Engineering 10:00-11:30, Room D203 (presented by AVIXA) €140 (included in AVIXA Pass and SUPERPASS) Session description: HDMI has always been about one thing: improving the viewer experience. In this presentation, we are going to explore all of the released versions of HDMI from 1.0 to 2.0b and talk about the new features they brought. Then we’re going to take a detailed look at high dynamic range (HDR), which is probably the biggest improvement of the decade in the AV world. And finally, we are going to talk about five new features of HDCP 2.2 that can (and probably will) cause headaches to everyone – manufacturers, installers and consumers alike. Strømholt says: “At ISE 2018, I will be attending several AVIXA education sessions. I’m particularly looking forward to this one, as I’m interested in learning more about the effect HDCP 2.2 will have on the design of AV systems in the next few years. In order to give my customers the best technical solutions, it’s important for me to keep up-to-date with the industry. I also hope to connect with my peers at the courses to discuss different challenges and solutions.”

10:00-10:30, AVIXA Unified Communications Solutions Theatre (sponsored by Crestron) Free to attend Session description: Videoconferencing camera technology is rapidly moving away from purely an optical issue. Moving forward, the ability for cameras to have some understanding of what they are actually seeing is vital for improved performance. In this session, you’ll hear: an update on developments in the industry; trends; how this technology could be very effective in increasing the quality of experience; and what the pitfalls and privacy concerns are when using highly intelligent visual technologies. Snyder says: “Here is the trifecta of talks: a top class speaker from a major industry player in R&D addressing a killer topic. What’s behind the camera now becomes more important than the camera and camera lens. This session will take you into new territory with insight on AI and machine learning. When technology starts to understand your work and your collaborations it creates a new customer experience. You don’t need to be a videoconferencing specialist to benefit from this session.”

Session description: The theme for this year’s CEDIA Talks is ‘10 Things You Should Pay Attention to, but Probably Aren’t’, with each Talk focused on one important ‘Thing’. In the sharing economy, consumers are accustomed to pressing a button on an app to get what they want when they want it. It could be transportation (Uber, Lyft), food delivery (Deliveroo), accommodation (Airbnb) or many other things – and they’re all provided by independent contractors. This CEDIA Talk will discuss how the home technology industry can and should adapt to the new on-demand economy desired by consumers today. Tickle says: “I have a lot of respect for Julie, she’s always provocative in what she says about our industry. With her broad overview of high-end and mass-market technology, I’m interested to see how she navigates this particular topic and the advice she has. In my view, she needs to answer why high-end should, or could, be anything other than a handholding experience. After all, while at the lower end of our market, Uberization has had a distinct impact, surely rich people have chauffeurs?”

€140 (included in AVIXA Pass and SUPERPASS) Session description: Did you know that most projection surfaces have a strong influence on the quality of the projection? The material that reflects the projection can have a negative impact on detail, colour and contrast and in this presentation, we can show you this in a live demonstration. You will see with microscopic images how a pixel responds to different types of projection surfaces and which surface you would need to use when projecting high resolution images. Goldmann says: “Most of us always design, with great care, which projector we need to use in our systems. We discuss LCD vs DLP, if we need more lumens, WXGA, WUXGA, 4K and much, much more. And then in most cases we just use whichever projection surface we can lay our hands on, without thinking too much about gain, surface material or anything else that might enhance the picture quality. I’m looking forward to attending this session to find out more about the latest industry developments.”

AVIXA UPDATE

NEWS FROM

Forecasting the European AV market In 2017, AVIXA released its AV Industry Outlook and Trends Analysis (IOTA) series of market research reports, providing detailed forecasts for the pro-AV industry worldwide. In this Q&A, Sean Wargo, senior director of market intelligence, AVIXA, shares key findings from the research for the European market Wargo: “growth has returned to the markets”

W

hat is the overall economic outlook for Europe? As most are aware, Brexit and the initial uncertainty it caused brought a bit of a slump to the European region in the past few years. This has largely abated, and so growth has returned to the markets. GDP is expected to grow about 2% in Europe this year, with particular strength in the central region. According to the IMF, Romania is leading the charge, with an expected 4.4% increase to GDP. Even hard-hit Greece, whose economy shrank in recent years, is posed for almost 3% growth. All of this is great news for the beleaguered region. As the AVIXA Industry Outlook and Trends Analysis (IOTA) report says, “While political uncertainty has the potential to nullify any economic gain, output growth, consumer confidence and labour market strength all suggest an economic environment that will contribute to professional AV market solidity.” How does the forecast look for the AV market? Consistent with the overall economic outlook, we expect the European region to show a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of just over 4% for the AV market from 2017 to 2022. This comes after experiencing contraction from 2014 to 2016 due to the economic downturns of the last five to ten years. Having shaken off those doldrums, pro AV in Europe will top out at $53.5 billion in 2022, a $10 billion increase from 2017.

‘Cloud-based services and IoT… have elevated streaming media, storage and distribution technologies to the top spot in terms of revenue shares’ What vertical markets are standing out among others? Consistent with much of the rest of the globe, the corporate vertical is the single largest portion of European pro-AV revenues, capturing a 22% share in 2018. This is followed by media and entertainment with 13%. These are not the fastest-growing markets, however. That distinction goes to healthcare and hospitality, whose growth accelerates to over 10% per year by 2022. This is driven by increasing investment in these sectors to improved customer experiences in hotels and new technology upgrades at hospitals and medical facilities. What about standout products and services? Cloud-based services and IoT are making their mark in Europe as elsewhere. While somewhat controversial to some, these trends have elevated streaming media, storage and distribution (SMSD) technologies to the top spot in terms of revenue shares for pro AV. SMSD constituted a full 28% of European revenues in 2017. Services have also become a major part of pro-AV offerings, representing 15% of revenues. Product commoditisation and a need for solution design and consulting through an upgrade process are helping fuel the continued importance of this category. Video displays are the fastest growing category in Europe, thanks to expanding interest in digital signage solutions. To learn more about AVIXA’s IOTA reports, visit www.avixa.org/IOTA.

IOTA predicts the European region to show a CAGR of just over 4% for the AV market from 2017 to 2022

Stand: 1-Q115 Among the range of toroidal isolation transformers being showcased by Torus Power at ISE is the AVR CE/AVR2 CE. It is designed to enhance the performance of any AV system, while protecting from surges, spikes, and brownouts that can be caused by a variable grid. Features include Ethernet control and IP addressability for remote monitoring and management. TOT AVR CE is described by the company as the little brother to the AVR and AVR2, it delivers the same feature set at a more affordable price. Housed in a compact, 2U chassis, the TOT AVR CE is rated at 4A and is designed for home theatre and two-channel audio systems. Also being demonstrated is the RM-20 CE. The WM Series is wall-mountable and comes in a range of configurations

for residential and commercial applications. Its features include toroidal isolation, noise filtering, high instantaneous current capability, and lightning and surge protection. Torus Power is also showing its

WM CE Series. The WM (wall-mount) CE series comes in RM, AVR, and AVR2 configurations, and offers toroidal isolation, surge suppression and cloud-based monitoring. Said to be easy to install, the unit feeds up to eight racks.

With multiple choices of cable constructions in the market, it can be difficult to choose which one is best to handle the higher bandwidth requirements of 4K. The tendency has been to migrate to higher and higher category levels, which leads to increased costs and complexity to install. Belden’s 4K UHD Media Cable, 2183, provides 4K video over HDBaseT for up to 100m. Experienced in signal transmission and cabling solutions, Belden conducted extensive HDBaseT testing in its engineering lab, in order to understand which cable design best supports the higher bandwidth needs of 4K video. Belden 4K UHD Media Cable was developed as a result. It fully supports the 5-play

feature of HDBaseT – audio/video, USB 2.0, 100BaseT Ethernet, control signals and 100W power – but it does so in a design that is small and flexible, easy to install and to terminate, claims the company. As one of the first cables to be UL certified with the new Power over HDBaseT (PoH) rating, Belden claims that users can be sure that its new cable will safely deliver up to 100W of power without compromising performance. The test lab included several different brands of equipment and Belden 2183 is interoperable with all, providing the best results that equipment could deliver, according to Belden.

Delivering data-driven digital signage SIGNAGELIVE Stand: 8-G335 By utilising its Widget Development Framework, Signagelive has the ability to build dynamic menu boards that connect to third-party data sources such as customer EPOS. Signagelive is showcasing Lavu as one example of a data integrated digital menu board solution at ISE this year. As an increasing number of digital menu board projects are now requiring data-driven product and pricing, Signagelive has found that retail markets’ digital signage requirements have been siloed from other technologies used in store such as Queue Management. Signagelive’s partnership with Qmatic demonstrates how the call to ‘cashier number three’ that we have experienced in stores can be delivered using Signagelive Widgets and data integration with Qmatic’s platform. Signagelive has been involved in many internal communications projects for digital signage, but

meeting rooms are the ‘go-to’ project for most AV resellers. At ISE, the company is also demonstrating how Signagelive’s enhanced Calendar Widget now offers room booking capabilities. In addition, the integration with Kramer Cloud demonstrates how Signagelive’s managed devices can be incorporated into audio, lighting and switching AV equipment to the correct source. Signagelive is also working with Seenspire to provide a social media visualisation and moderation solution, in addition to an Infotainment offering. Both are delivered using HTML5 and are available in Signagelive’s Marketplace. The Seenspire Infochannel offering is a unique approach of a fixed cost per display regardless of the amount of content. This allows users to build a feed by category (news, sport, health, trivia and so on) from news agencies and select a language of their choice. If the user wants to change the category, provider or language they can do so within the Seenspire portal at no additional cost.

Making its debut on the European market at ISE is the Roland XS-62S integrated sixchannel video switcher and audio mixer. Designed to save space in a 1RU form factor for either fixed installations or for live events, recording, broadcast and streaming productions, it features PTZ camera control. Installed a table-top connection box recently? Annoying, isn’t it? Unless you’re an octopus you’re probably fed up with fiddling with screws on the bottom of the table while you try to tighten them from the top. Belgian stand and rack manufacturer Caymon thinks it has the answer. The new Casy table connection box is fitted with a patented BlindSnap system that allows both placement and fixing of the mount from the top. This blind fixing system can be easily adjusted to any type of table thickness and stays in place without the use of screws in the table, says Caymon.

As part of HDL’s new line of complete audio solutions, the newly released HomePlay network player has been purposefully created for large residential and commercial multi-zone audio installations. Being showcased at ISE, it’s capable of streaming online audio, connecting to local storage devices, and reading audio files from a phone or tablet via Bluetooth. Able to be integrated into HDL automation platforms, HomePlay can work with shading, lighting and HVAC solutions to ‘craft the perfect atmosphere for any occasion,’ says the company. Equally capable of supplying audio to a home or a large-scale commercial building, HomePlay comes with

Borderless screen floats at ISE STEWART FILMSCREEN Stand: 1-F50 Being seen internationally for the first time is the Stewart Filmscreen Balón Borderless Screen. Said to produce a ‘floating image’ effect, it features a bevelled frame structure that allows the material to wrap around and snap smoothly into place behind the screen. The Balón Borderless uses Stewart Filmscreen’s EZ-Mount Bracket System to streamline installation and ensure a consistently level image. It is available with most Stewart Filmscreen materials, including proprietary acoustically transparent options. According to the company, the Balón Borderless helps integrators and

consultants tailor the projection screen experience to best suit the needs of the user, application and environment. Stewart is also showcasing its new Cascade ElectriScreen. Designed for corporate campuses, education institutions, houses of worship, and even large residences, it provides the option of a recessed roller screen with image width capabilities of over 4m. Requiring only 20cm space above the ceiling, it is aimed at tight spaces and areas where access or ceiling height is a challenge, or as an alternative to the company’s Torrent, where the latter won’t fit. The Cascade is said to be illustrative of Stewart Filmscreen’s contemporary new case styling and other product line refinements.

Hands-off interoperability IDK CORPORATION Stand: 10-R180 Japanese manufacturer IDK Corporation has expanded its MSD series of AV switches with two new products: the MSD-802UHD and MSD-6200 series. The MSD-802UHD is a hybrid switch that handles digital up to 4K and HD analogue AV formats. A compact, 1RU, multiformat audiovisual signal switcher, it is designed to be simple to use,

with a built-in scan converter and integrated HDBaseT inputs and outputs. Supporting 4K resolutions at 60Hz with 4:4:4 colour-space support, the MSD-802 is said to be a good fit for applications requiring low-latency processing and full colour fidelity for 4K/UltraHD presentation. The MSD-6200 Series are AV switches with Dante audio interface and HDBT wallplate TX support. These 2RU switchers are available in 3-, 4-, 6- and 8-output configurations. With eight

outputs (HDMI or HDBT for each port), the input side of the switch supports HDMI, HDBaseT and DVI-I (including CV, Y/C, YUV & RGB/ HV) signal formats. The two HDBT inputs source power to remote wallplate transmitters. The embedded 64-channel Dante audio processing simplifies integration of the switches with audio subsystems and auxiliary signal processing gear. Two balanced stereo inputs allow the switch to embed HDMI and serve as a Dante encoder.

The HALO Arena has been revealed by EM Acoustics, with the new product taking the company for the first time into the arena sound reinforcement market. Built using the same core design as the much smaller HALO-C, the Halo Arena takes overall SPL capability to a level EM Acoustics believes is suitable for much larger applications, both fixed installation and touring. While HALO Arena delivers the same performance and coverage as HALO-C, the technology used to achieve it is different, due to the much higher SPLs required from the Arena. Rather than an AMT

plane-wave guide, EM Acoustics has used compression drivers with a specially developed patentpending emulation manifold which combines the energy of four 3.4in diaphragm, 1.4in exit compression drivers into a plane-wave array. A single HALO Arena cabinet is said to exhibit a flat, freefield frequency response from 48Hz to 19kHz (+/-3dB) and a phase response which is +/- 20º between 150Hz and 18kHz. Due to the loading technique applied to the low frequency drivers combined with the high frequency waveguide, the dispersion pattern control is maintained down to 250Hz. The bottom end is served by a pair of high-power 3.5in voice coil, 12in low-frequency transducers.

HDMI, IR, and RS-232 signals up to 70m over a single Cat5e/6 cable. The units include both HDMI and UTP outputs for each zone, offer switching times of less than one second, and support HDMI and DVI inputs. The VHD-4 is HDMI 1.3-compliant and supports resolutions up to 1080p, while the VHD-8 is compliant with HDMI 1.4 and adds support for 3D.

The certified high-speed cables from the PureInstall series on show on the PureLink stand consist of high-purity OFC copper cables with gold-plated plug connectors. To avoid signal losses and errors in transmission lengths exceeding 15m, PureLink equips its cables with amplifiers on the display side signal. APO (Active Performance Optimiser) technology is said to ensure that images are always sharp and sound is crystal clear. The design of the HDMI connector with the Secure-Lock System developed by PureLink is claimed to have no equivalent in the market. The increased

maximum pulling force of 6.8kg guarantees, says the company, a steadily secure and stable connection even under heavy loads. If this load limit is exceeded, the cable will automatically disconnect from the socket to prevent damage to the cable or to expensive equipment. The patented Ultra Lock System ensures mechanically secure HDMI connections by locking the HDMI connector in the socket. The 360° safety lock ensures permanently uninterrupted connections, can be used universally with any HDMI socket, and can be switched between the ‘locked’ and ‘unlocked’ positions with only one hand.

Why do you think the ISE show has managed to grow year after year?

It’s because ISE continues to be the ‘go-to’ event in Europe for our dynamic industry to showcase the latest innovations, network with partners and meet new contacts. This is Oblong’s fifth consecutive year at ISE and we’ve seen the show evolve considerably and become bigger every year, with more space in the halls and more exhibitors every year from global brands. Visitors come to ISE to see the very latest solutions in the professional AV industry, so it’s important for all innovative brands in the sector to be there.

I think ISE has always had a solid vision and plan right from its inception 14 years ago when it debuted in Geneva, always with one eye on the future. The organisation is well structured with AVIXA and CEDIA in the engine room. Importantly, it made the positive switch to Amsterdam and hasn’t looked back. I’ve been coming here since 2009 and the quality just gets better and better year on year for both exhibitors and visitors alike, with more technology and product launches, educational programmes, keynote speakers, events and more.

Tim Burnham, president and chief product designer at Tempest, said: “Many of the projects we are now seeing for Hush enclosures these days are in theatres or concert halls, where projector noise is a complete no-no. Until now, we have always counted

on moving the cooling fans to a location out of the audience’s hearing to get the best noise attenuation in the room. “This can be OK in new construction, but so many of these venues, especially in Europe, are historic structures, where punching through walls is verboten – we had to go back to the drawing board. “We worked with our friends at Sanyo Denki, who have some very cool – pun intended! – DC fan technology, and by combining this with high-tech melamine acoustic foam and some interesting labyrinth geometry, we have matched or bettered our previous best results, with a completely standalone enclosure.” Whispr typically mounts under a ceiling or other structure, and rigging options are available for all installation types.

Work Pro Audio, Equipson’s installation and pro audio marque, is showcasing the latest additions to its Arion Line Array range, the SL 210 A and SL 218 SA subwoofer. Designed at Work Pro’s headquarters in Valencia, Spain, they are intended for use in demanding environments that require power, high-quality audio reproduction and controlled directivity. The SL 210 A is a two-way, biamplified line array element with the option of remote monitoring and control via Ethernet, a built-in DSP section and twin 1,000W peak Class D Pascal amplifiers. The low frequencies are handled by two 10in Faital Pro LF drivers and a bass reflex enclosure, while a 1.4in Beyma compression driver takes care of the high frequencies. Through careful application of the onboard DSP, tailored passive filtering of one of the LF drivers in the low/mid-range and a newly designed dispersion horn, the company claims that the SL 210 A achieves consistent 120º horizontal coverage and a maximum sound pressure level of 135dB. The frequency response extends from 18kHz down to 100Hz (-10dB).

Lower frequencies can be reproduced by the new, dedicated SL 218 SA subwoofer. This is powered by a 4,000W peak Class D Pascal amplifier and can handle frequencies from 30 to 140Hz.

AlwaysON router is on message OBSERVABLES Stand: 15-G258 The patent-pending IOBOT router from Observables offers configurable internal modules, for customisation by market application. The device’s AlwaysON platform gives it the baseline functionality of a regular network router, but can also discreetly control phone and intercom, access control, security, network, automation, persistent communications and more. AlwaysON enables dealers to add a software-asa-service (SaaS) business model through revenue-based subscriptions determined by end-user service and functionality. Abe Schryer, president and CEO at Observables, said: “With the abundance of new security and smart home devices entering the market, we saw a need for dealers to provide an intelligent network platform that could be customised with recurring

Solution points finger at security EKEY BIOMETRIC SYSTEMS Stand: 5-U137 Claiming to already have over one million customers, fingerprint technology company ekey is presenting its latest ekey net product release, introducing new terminals, compatibilities and features, at ISE 2018. Among the advantages noted by ekey for its solution is that it is 1,000 times more secure than a 4-digit code, and that access rights cannot be ‘transferred’ as they can with a card. Aimed at companies and organisations or for private homes, ekey net is a networkable fingerprint access control system for up to 80 finger scanners with centralised administration via PC. A LAN interface enables ekey net to be integrated into building control systems. To simplify integration, a number of drivers for the ekey solution are available including Crestron, Control4, RTI, URC, Vantage, Savant, myGEKKO and GIRA.

The ekey net system uses fingerprint technology for business or residential access

The ekey software enables users to enrol individuals and organise them within freely definable user groups. Simple activation and deactivation of access authorisation is said to keep administration work to a minimum. Beyond this, the company has announced that it is now possible to integrate ekey’s keypad with a capacitive touchpad in glass, enabling an additional 2,000 codes to be stored for each device and managed centrally.

What do you see as the most significant new technologies for use within the world of education?

IP-based paging and bell systems are replacing existing audio installations. Most schools have implemented good IT infrastructure and therefore can deploy a powerful paging solution at minimal cost. Scaling such solutions will be a fraction of what they used to be from a dedicated audio solution. The latest technology enables our customers to use the mobile phone as an integrated part of such solutions, for example as a locationindependent paging station. This goes a long way in reducing stress for integrators, technology managers and other end users.

Boost for live performance DISGUISE Stand: 8-K250 Formerly d3 Technologies, disguise is showcasing the gx hardware range at ISE, and providing visitors to the stand with a sneak peek into features of an upcoming software release. The company has established a range of software and hardware products to design, sequence and control the most progressive events and installations. The disguise r15 software release includes OmniCal, a camera-based projector calibration engine that improves projection quality and set-up time, even for the most complex of setups. Using a network of either iPod Touch devices or wired Ethernet machine vision cameras, OmniCal

quickly captures a point cloud of the stage, accurately calibrates projectors to sub-pixel accuracy, and conforms pre-existing surface meshes to match reality. The result allows clients to calibrate large numbers of projectors in less time and with much more confidence, claims the company. The r15 software also includes Lux, a new visualisation renderer, which offers a more accurate simulation of light levels, camera exposure and occlusion than before. Disguise says that Lux visualisations are simultaneously more compelling to look at, and more accurate and communicative for designers and clients. The company is also a sponsor of the World Masters of Projection Mapping competition, which

has been taking place at this week at ISE 2018, produced by ISE, Amsterdam Light Festival, and the RAI Amsterdam. Video artists have created six-minute video sequences that have been mapped onto the threedimensional architecture of the EYE Filmmuseum, powered by the disguise 4x4pro. (See page 9.) The Trak-Kit Multi Panel System is being exhibited at ISE for the first time by maker Flow Architech. This is an advanced movingwall system using patented wire management, allowing for linear and rotational movement. It encases complete display, audio and lighting technologies within its panels, providing solutions for both residential and commercial projects. Users can move videowalls, divide larger rooms and spaces to smaller ones, have a home theatre built

in as part of a residential project, and include videoconferencing and touchpanels in commercial projects. ISE visitors are also able to view Trak-Kit Rotating TV, the most complex automated Trak so far. The linear and rotary movements here are accompanied by screen movement up and down the Z-axis, and rotational from portrait to landscape. With its ‘auto pilot’ continuous movement featuring smart servo motors, the Trak-Kit Rotating TV can be used to optimise digital signage, offering solutions for commercial projects that require either portrait or landscape viewing, or for digital art installations.

Narrow pixel pitch (NPP) LED screens are making their way into education. This may surprise some, but they are now an effective alternative to a large projector, making them an excellent proposition for applications such as lecture theatres as well as for educational sports grounds. Notably, UK LED screen manufacturer DigiLED installed an LED screen in a lecture theatre in Sheffield, most likely the first in a UK university. NPP LED is now accessible and is pushing aside projection. Like it or not, NPP LED is the future for all displays above about 100in diagonal.

FEATURE High-end 4K lights the way for projector market

Produced in association with EISA

Mark Craven says resolution of 4K and beyond is just the start of a new paradigm for projectors – and laser technology may hold the key Developments in premium projection are being driven by the rapid growth in 4K content. Solutions, from long- to ultra-short-throw, are upping their pixel counts – and embracing HDR (High Dynamic Range) support. At the same time, we’re seeing a move away from traditional lampbased designs to laser illumination, bringing in performance and installation benefits. For mid-sized residential cinemas, the likes of Sony and JVC both brought new native 4K laser models to market in 2017. The former’s VPLVW760ES marries the illumination tech to the company’s traditional SXRD chipset, with HDR10 and HLG (Hybrid Log Gamma) HDR playback tied to a 2,000 lumens rating. A compact chassis and motorised controls aid its installation potential. JVC’s DLA-Z1, meanwhile, marked the company’s native 4K HDR debut, instantly becoming the flagship of its highly regarded D-ILA-based home cinema projector stable, ramping up brightness to 3,000 lumens. 4K resolution and laser illumination are also having an impact on ultra-short-throw models. Such products have obvious appeal for media rooms and businesses where ‘hidden’ solutions may be preferred. Sony has built upon the form factor of its ultra-short-throw Life Space UX line with its VPL-VZ1000ES, targeting those seeking a high-performance 4K HDR experience (up to 120in) from a discreet system

at a distance as short as 10in. Once seen in action, it’s hard to forget.

Higher ground 4K, however, doesn’t represent the end game for broadcasters and content creators. 8K (7,680 x 4,320 resolution, 33 megapixels) has long been a target; it was put on the roadmap of the DVB (Digital Video Broadcasting) consortium in 2012 under the ‘UHD-2’ specification, and recording trials were undertaken that same year during the London Olympics. At this ISE show, UK projection specialist Digital Projection is signalling where the future may lie with its Insight Dual Laser 8K – an 8K resolution projector (with three-chip DLP silicon and a massive 25,000 lumens brightness) designed for premium, large-scale theatres and commercial applications. As the name suggests, this is yet another instance where a solid-state laser light engine has been preferred. So why the current focus on laser? Most obviously, with lifetimes rated typically in excess of 20,000 hours, they eliminate the need for replacement bulbs, solving a problem for both end-users and installers alike. Running noise, too, can be greatly reduced, giving greater flexibility over projector placement. Ponderous boot-up times are a thing of the past, and recalibration (due to brightness drops over time) less likely.

Colour party And then there’s colour reproduction. As consumer sources move away from the REC.709 colour space of the HD era into wider REC.2020 and REC.2100 variants, enabling better reproduction of ‘real-life’ colour, laser light engines are giving manufacturers the scope to follow suit. For commercial installations, projector giants Christie and Barco are implementing RGB laser sources to comfortably outperform the traditional DCI-P3 colour space and radically boost luminance levels, particularly beneficial with large-format 3D systems. The focused nature of laser light beams dramatically increases colour accuracy, too. At ISE, you can see a range of premium 4K projectors catering to different viewing environments and price points – models designed for stylish media rooms, lightcontrolled home cinemas, classrooms, boardrooms, commercial projects and beyond. But in 2018, the emphasis isn’t only on a sharper image. The new breed is brighter, quieter and pushes the performance envelope ever further. offers 500MHz and 10Gbit transmission characteristics certified by the GHMT accredited test laboratory, says TTL Networks, while the 360° shield connection guarantees excellent electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) characteristics. Achim Beuckes, managing director at TTL Network, said: “It‘s also possible to design our new keystone jacks for individual tasks. Our zinc die cast housing is compatible with all covers of switch series available from all well-known manufacturers. The attractive price-performance ratio is yet another benefit, in particular because TTL Network also offers a connection module, which will certainly appeal to installers and network service providers alike.”

In which areas do you see the Internet of Things offering the greatest opportunities to your company?

VOXPOP

If your amplifier or processor accepts networked audio and is controlled via an Ethernet connection it is almost a thing of the internet! Autonomous reporting via nonspecific software direct to your phone is an exciting possibility that should have people asking why this didn’t happen before. It’s not a great leap to imagine all equipment having social media ‘accounts’ that they can post to when something is wrong – having that extra reassurance that it will work with every device, across all platforms. No additional installs, no incompatibility – the holy grail of software!

At Middle Atlantic, we’re in the business of providing the foundation for great AV systems. The proliferation of IoT sensors, devices and cloud services not only helps improve the performance of systems, but more importantly, can provide real value to the operation and reliability of AV systems. As part of the Legrand Eliot program, we continue to add RackLink IP-enabled capabilities – such as control locally, over the web, and through mobile apps – to many of our products to help consultants and integrators deliver exceptional AV experiences to end users.

IoT is key to extending both the value and usage of ‘front of class’ technologies. For example, the use of programmable technologies, such as robots, is great for supporting science and technology agendas within schools. This is an area that we can only see developing as more exciting products come to market.

FEATURE Digital signage delivers another side to shopping Faced with the onslaught of online retail, experiential shopping is the in-thing for malls and the high street. Paul Bray takes a trip down the aisles Visit a shopping mall or big store these days and it’s like walking into an AV showroom. At least half of all digital signage shipments go into retail, and the sector boasts some of the largest and most advanced installations, with huge, contoured videowalls, multi-point interactive displays, and content that matches the quality and artistry of a live event. Because retail is a live event. We can buy stuff from home. Shops are somewhere we go for an ‘experience’, often in a group, and in large part it’s AV that gives it to us. Bright, flexible, scalable LED is in its element. Coating the walls, spread across ceilings, wrapped around pillars, even on the floor for fractious kids to jump on. When customers get up close and want to interact with content, 4K multi-touch screens show every detail the brand owner wants. It’s not just product info, but lifestyle videos, games, competitions – anything to get people engaged. Living on the edge Even shelf edges are being brought to life with miniature flat panels or projection-mapped displays. Mute signage displays can be given a voice by streaming sound to the customer’s phone. And if there’s a real live event – a cookery demo, a catwalk show – it can be

streamed in real time to videowalls and customers’ phones using the latest content delivery management solutions. But enticing customers into the store isn’t enough. You’ve still got to sell them something. If you’ve sold out, or just don’t have space to keep every item in stock, ‘endless aisle’ technology is the next best thing – touchsensitive signage that lets customers browse your entire electronic catalogue. It combines the experience of in-store shopping with the breadth and convenience of online. A related technology is the touchscreenbased self-service kiosk. These may seem a tad impersonal for today’s experiential retail model, but actually they are ideal. No one needs to talk to a salesperson to check an item is in stock or place an order. They need them to give tailored, personal advice – and when they do, they’re not waiting behind 15 other customers all checking stock or placing orders. Mirror, mirror There’s scope for yet more innovative AV in the changing room. ‘Magic mirrors’ can’t tell you whether you’re more beautiful than Snow White. But they can use a clever combination of touchscreens and kinetic technology to

see yourself ‘wearing’ items without having to try them on (they don’t even have to be in stock). Retailers who’ve tried it find customers tend to spend less time in the fitting room but spend more money. All these technologies can be rolled together, so you can pop into the fitting room, scan the endless aisle, check the stock, get some items delivered to the room by a sales assistant, have a physical-meets-virtual trying-on session, and waltz out with a new outfit. It can even be tied to the big-screen signage in the main store, so if something catches your eye on the way in you can touch on it, and have it waiting to be tried on later. Semi-virtual changing rooms offer a hint of how the retail experience could be enhanced by augmented reality. Of course, in the main store you can’t very well have one customer’s AR experience blown up on the videowall, so phone apps may be the way forward – design your own kitchen or see how a piece of furniture would look in your own home, for example. Full-on virtual reality would seem to be the next step. It’s attractive. But the way VR is going, before long we’ll be having such a good experience at home there’ll be no need to go to the shops at all. Smart retailers are already working out how to compete.

A symbolic milestone STARDRAW.COM Stand: 7-T199 A significant milestone was reached in December by Stardraw.com, a developer of AV system design and documentation software. Its unique symbols library has broken the six-figure barrier, with more than 100,000 symbols of 34,586 products from 838 manufacturers. According to the company, this represents the largest high-quality line-art library available to the professional AV industry from a single source. Stardraw’s symbols library has been a work in progress for more than 20 years and, since the advent of the Product Request service

in 2002, the number of symbols available to subscribing customers has grown massively. Moreover, since the addition of new products into the library is based on user requests, the contents of the library reflect the products in use by the global professional AV industry. All symbols are generated in house by Stardraw’s symbols department according to an established data specification. This means that, regardless of the original data or what the symbols might represent, a qualitative standard is maintained. As a result, any and all symbols used in project documentation work seamlessly with each other, making the design a coherent whole, says the company.

FEATURE Is the display market about to be unsettLED? One of the many attractions of ISE is seeing technology shifts as they occur in the marketplace. Ian McMurray wonders whether that’s set to happen in the world of screens. Not all vacuum cleaners are Hoovers. Not all copying machines are Xeroxes. And not all large outdoor screens are JumboTrons. The technical term is ‘genericised trademark’, and it’s a sign of success for any brand – in this case, Sony – for it to become synonymous with a class of equipment. There was a time when any and every multi-square metre LED display at a sports venue was called a JumboTron – regardless of the actual manufacturer. And, back when Sony first adopted the technology for its supersize screens, that was pretty much all LED was perceived to be good for. LED delivered sometimes blindingly bright images that could probably be seen from outer space. For that application, no-one cared that the pixel pitch was enormous. But: slowly and surely, LED pixel pitches have been decreasing. Once, they were measured in centimetres. And then in millimetres. And now in fractions of a millimetre, whatever those are called. At this point, things get interesting. The pixel pitch of HD LCD – one of the key elements that create the brilliant images of which the technology is capable – is around 0.7mm. That’s about what the leading LED screens are now capable of. Game changer Why does that matter? It’s all about viewing distances. Where once, LED displays were best viewed from the other end of a football pitch, now, they’re very comfortably viewable from a metre or two. In other words: LED

technology can now do what LCD can do. And that, potentially, is a game changer. How so? If LED can only do exactly what LCD can do – why would that change the game? The simple answer is, of course, that having achieved something very close to image parity in terms of resolution, LED has several advantages over LCD. Perhaps most notable among these is that LED technology has no bezels. The big deal there, of course, is that, for about as long as LED manufacturers have been striving to minimise pixel pitch, so LCD manufacturers have been trying to minimise bezel width. The prize? The increasing number of videowall installations, driven by our love of big, attention grabbing images – and in which the completely seamless image is an object of great desire. Those bezels are now routinely 6.0mm or less – but there’s still a visible delineation between LCD screens mounted next to each other. LED bezels equally routinely achieve 0.0mm. That makes LED enormously attractive for multi-screen applications. It’s also widely claimed to offer truer colours, higher brightness (and thus better in high ambient light environments) and superior contrast ratio. LCD has set the image quality bar incredibly high – but not so high that it can’t be surmounted. Creative advantages It’s not just in rectangular videowalls that LED has advantages. It is inherently modular – created, in effect, from building blocks, as

opposed to the monolithic architecture of LCD screens. That gives it all kinds of creative – as well as practical - advantages. LED is also inherently weatherproof, as might be expected from its genealogy. And: it consumes less power, making its cost of ownership lower – as well as being more environmentally friendly. That modular approach also has benefits when it comes to maintainability. A monolithic LCD screen needs to be replaced in its entirety in the unlikely event it fails. With LED, only the faulty module needs to be replaced. So: what’s not to like about LED? Well, it doesn’t have the same slim physique as LCD, and, square metre for square metre, weighs more. The real answer, however, is price. Those advantages don’t come for free – far from it. As things stand, LED is sufficiently expensive per square metre of screen to give any potential buyer pause for thought. The $64 million question is: for how long will that remain the case? The differential has fallen and is falling. Can it fall far enough? That’s going to be interesting to watch over the next year or two: it’ll be fascinating to see any developments coming out of the ISE show. No less interesting, though, will be to see how the LCD display manufacturers react in the event that LED begins to seriously encroach on their traditional territory. It is currently possible to predict some serious incursions by LED – but who knows? You underestimate the LCD manufacturers, with their long history of innovation, at your peril.

Stage takes centre stage Taking control of the home FENIX STAGE Stand: 7-N180 Valencia-based Fenix Stage could probably have built its own stand at ISE 2018 – the manufacturer is demonstrating the latest additions to its range of lifting towers, trussing, stage platforms and accessories. Pride of place goes to the company’s improved stage platforms, which are designed to withstand a greater weight, 1,000kg/ sqm uniformly distributed. They have telescopic legs, adjustable by the millimetre, which allow the stage rise 2m in height. The new leg-to-leg and frame-to-frame connectors provide maximum safety, resistance and stability, while new modular and adjustable stairs are easy to erect and very secure, says the company. For its TRC ground support towers Fenix Stage has launched a pioneering new safety system, the Fenix Security Hook (FSH). This provides security to the tower in elevation, descent and during use, by

energy efficient. By making the components auto-adaptive the home will even become empathic.” Using a clear dashboard, energy monitoring with One Smart Control gives an insight not only into the yield of devices such as solar panels, but also into electricity consumption. Energy measurement details can be used to control devices and technology; so if there is plenty of solar energy, the washing machine can work at full speed. Equally, the installation prevents lots of energy being used at the wrong moment, or energy consumption exceeding what the installation can provide.

What changes do you envisage in the digital signage market in 2018?

Until now, advances in digital signage have created fantastically accomplished products but ignored the needs of the installer. Prepare to see developments that make digital signage products easier to use. Mounting systems will receive a lot of attention in 2018, with ergonomic models enabling easy removal and repair of digital signage units. As the market grows ever hungrier for videowalls, their maintenance and installation will become a priority. Features like auto-alignment and electronic assistance will become commonplace, meaning an end to wonky and broken displays.

It has already started, but consolidation is going to be the biggest word in digital signage in the coming years. There are simply too many digital signage platforms in the market and now is the natural time for those to consolidate under fewer umbrellas; we’re going to see acquisitions, mergers, and a few falls by the wayside. IPTV has, and is, a major advantage for us in the digital signage market, and I can see one or two of the big signage companies looking to merge with an IPTV business.

Hub for home control HOGAR CONTROLS Stand: 9-F170 Smart home and building automation company Hogar Controls is showing off its Hogar Pro Solutions in the Z-Wave Pavilion here at ISE. At the core of Hogar Pro Solutions suite is the Home Controller (HC) Pro, a compact but powerful hub that uses Z-Wave Plus, Zigbee and WiFi to connect and control smart home devices. This plug-in controller is small enough to fit into any power outlet, yet powerful enough to control hundreds of smart devices like lights, thermostats, sensors,

locks and more, claims Hogar. According to the company, the HC Pro is easy to set up through the Hogar Controls app, which users can also use to control their devices or set scenes. Working with the HC Pro, the Touch Panels series from Hogar Controls allow users to set customised actions through programmable buttons, available in a variety of options. With sleek design elements, each touchpanel perfectly complements modern décor in a home or commercial environment, says the company. The Touch Panels allow users to create scenes, control individual devices, dim lighting and more.

Cloud-based content management will become the musthave tool for many retail brands and businesses in 2018. The ability to manage content centrally from a software solution makes it easy to create, schedule and display traffic-stopping signage content. From a single display in a coffee shop to an extensive display network in a worldwide business franchise, a cloud content management system allows shop owners to create content from hundreds of templates, schedule distribution, and monitor display performance in real time. In fact, some systems require no server set-up and are a one-stop solution to begin quickly conversing with customers.

They are available in various styles and control button options to best fit a home or property’s size and individual system requirements. The Touch Panels also offer support for Z-Wave Plus, Zigbee and WiFi to ensure wireless compatibility across a wide range of smart home products. With features like proximity and temperature sensors (on select models), multitouch control of devices through preprogrammed touch, tap or finger swipe, and access via the Hogar Controls mobile app, the Touch Panel series are intended to offer consumers and integrators a stylish option for easy in-room smart home control.

Sound of Silence, Noise Pollution as a Catalyst for ‘Green Audio’ – The Next Generation of Pro Audio Solutions

Speaker: Yuval Kramer, director of audio, Kramer Electronics Our everyday lives are filled with possible sound pollutants ranging from loud music, traffic and people talking in reverberant halls and poor system set-ups, to name but a few. While usually these elements do not seem to disturb us, at times we have a physiological or psychological reaction to them. Simply put, noise pollution is a disturbing sound that causes imbalance in our life. This is where ‘Green Audio’ comes into play. Today, AV manufacturers, consultants and integrators are starting to position themselves at the forefront in the battle against noise by leading the way with ‘green audio’ solutions focused on reverberation time, phase issues, signal-to-noise ratio, gain structure, automation, system efficiency and adaptable scenarios. This seminar aims to provide participants with a deeper understanding of noise pollution and the tools available to fight it to provide customers (and all people really) with an improved life experience.

Real-World Loudspeaker Beamforming

The Evolution of the Projection Surface in an Ever-changing Projector Market

Speaker: Bob McCarthy, director of system optimisation, Meyer Sound Beamforming is a hot topic in professional audio, but there are limitations to what can be achieved while still preserving overall system performance. This instructive presentation explains how array size, element spacing, phase, frequency, and constructive and destructive interference affect output directivity. Learn how to reliably accomplish beamforming and beam steering with column and large-format line array systems using signal processing and physical adjustments. Dispel the misconceptions and mark the difference between physics and mere fantasy.

Speaker: David van Etten, product manager, projection screens EMEA, Milestone AV Technologies Did you know that most projection surfaces have a strong influence on the quality of the projection? The material that reflects the projection can have a negative impact on detail, colour and contrast and in this presentation, we can show you this in a live demonstration. You will see with microscopic images how a pixel responds to different types of projection surfaces and which surface you would need to use when projecting high-resolution images.

What do you see as the most significant developments in the pro audio landscape?

In recent years Dante has grown tremendously in the overall pro audio industry, but very specifically in the installation business. The reasons are obvious: you can use simple IT infrastructure components to ensure your audio architecture, and at the same time save on wiring costs due to the commonly available cable and connectors. As the latter are also used in video structure products using HDBaseT (even with embedded audio) the move towards IP architectures is natural because it allows you to route signals much more easily. It even allows for reconfiguration at a later stage without the need to re-wire.

René Moerch Product manager, DPA Microphones Stand: 7-P249

Quality audio amplification, along with audio technologies in general, have developed massively over the last years. As a next step, manufacturers have learned the importance of designing a system that is foolproof and very easy to maintain. Powersoft has been a precursor in this field, in particular when it comes to software and operational tools. Our experience is that the market is looking for products capable of offering remote monitoring and control featuring, for example, the live impedance measurement. We have developed our Powersoft DSP +D products with that in mind.

Marc Kocks Business development manager, fixed installation, Powersoft Stand: 15-U265

In terms of developments in the technology itself, networked audio is of real importance. There’s still education to be done in terms of the benefits such systems bring to integrators and users with regard to flexible installation, audio quality, control and so on, but it’s a very significant area of the market. Away from the products themselves, we’re increasingly seeing non-specialist staff involved in the day-to-day operation of products like digital discussion systems. That brings challenges for manufacturers to develop increasingly user-friendly but flexible installed audio solutions.

The interconnectivity of all pro equipment has become the main goal of most corporates and broadcasters over recent years. The advent of Dante and AES64 networking has opened up incredible multiroom and multi-site production capabilities. For PMC, the final link in this chain would be the loudspeakers – especially those with embedded D/A capability. Future developments in this area would open up individual monitoring capabilities for point sources in all areas of an installation.

FEATURE On-stream viewing Paul Bray goes OTT to find out how IP networks are delivering the content that used to be the domain of the big broadcasters Our appetite for video and audio is voracious, and nothing beats the immediacy of live streaming if you want to grab and hold your audience – not to mention zapping them with a few carefully targeted ads. There’s plenty of mileage left in traditional AV broadcast technologies, but the buzz is around IP (isn’t it always these days?). It’s affordable and it’s everywhere – just what would-be broadcasters need, whether their audience is their own employees, the crowd at an event or the worldwide public. If you’re online, you’re on air. And if you’re commercially minded you can find out exactly who is watching your content, ads included. Nirvana, anyone? The YouTube effect seems to have turned everyone into a budding Hitchcock, and the latest live-streaming, TV-studio-in-a-box products promise that almost anyone can create their own professional-quality video productions. Go OTT and you can even get your audience to supply much of the bandwidth and processing power. Internet-based OTT (over-the-top) streaming is taking wing on an up-current of ubiquitous public WiFi and unlimited mobile data plans, plus some nifty smart caching, smart routing and dynamic stream management technology behind the scenes. Instead of conventional, one-size-fits-all broadcasting, OTT users each get their own personalised stream. They can select, pause,

rewind and replay. The broadcaster (or, more properly, narrowcaster) can slip in precisiontargeted ads and even watermark the content. And there’s virtually no limit to the number of channels – you could stream every stage at Glastonbury or every event at the Olympics. If it sounds rather like YouTube or Netflix, that’s because they use OTT, too. Mobile delivery Harnessing users’ own devices to provide processing power and optimise the viewing experience is a masterstroke, whether by packaging the video in HTML5, or creating tailored apps for different platforms. But it creates its own issues, especially considering that more than half of video views are now on mobiles. Adaptive bitrate streaming is one solution to the vagaries of network bandwidth: if the network slows down most of us prefer to continue viewing in reduced quality rather than watch the little white dot disappear. And content delivery management (CDM) solutions can transcode content into the various formats required and check it’s appropriate for the user’s device. CDM is becoming efficient enough that it can even stream live footage to audiences at live events. Of course, there is still a big place for more conventional broadcasting of single content streams to multiple simultaneous viewers, whether it’s rolling news or a CEO’s town hall address. For this the go-to tech is CDN

(content delivery network), which relies on a network of geographically distributed servers to boost performance. Network power Moving content delivery off their ISP enables broadcasters to scale up and down much more flexibly – and cheaply. The latest evolution is the private or hybrid CDN, when big companies build their own CDN on top of one of the commercial networks to keep tighter control over who views their content, where and when. More advanced CDNs also handle content repackaging, so they can transcode the stream to suit the user device type at the network edge rather than sending multiple versions through the CDN. This also ensures mobile users, for example, aren’t shut out by impossibly high bandwidth requirements. And copyright lawyers are drooling over the prospect of CDNs being able to embed a unique watermark in each stream, enabling pirates and their sources to be hunted down very quickly. Finally, we should spare a little limelight for encoding. Like expert tightrope walkers, encoders must strike a life-or-death balance between video quality, bandwidth and processing power. The best ones are so sharp they can stream live event footage into the arena itself. The latest H.265 (HVEC) codec can even compress 4K into manageable bandwidth. Pass the popcorn.

ArenA Tech Tour scores highly To Infinity and beyond Wednesday evening saw an ISE 2018 Tech Tour take place at the high-tech Amsterdam ArenA. Presented by Huib Pasman, a technology expert at Amsterdam ArenA Innovation Centre, the tour looked at the use of AV technology at the venue and the core design principles involved. Tour participant Chua CongWei, a consultant in Arup’s Acoustics, AV and Theatre Group, commented: “Joining a tech tour brings the ISE experience out of the exhibition hall. We were glad to be part of this!”

Together, we are stronger ALCONS AUDIO Stand: 6-H150 For many of the 70,000+ visitors expected to attend ISE this year – not to mention the 1,000+ exhibitors – the show is unique as, increasingly, it combines what would once have been the discrete audiences of CEDIA and AVIXA. That’s certainly the case for Tom Back, co-founder of Alcons Audio. “A couple of years ago, we started

to address the residential market as well as our traditional commercial market, and ISE brings us both kind of visitors,” he said, going on to explain how Alcons’ pro-ribbon line-array technology uniquely crosses the borders between the two markets. “We meet people at ISE who, frankly, we’d never meet at any other show,” Back explained. Back is a firm believer in the marriage of audio and video to produce a whole that is greater

than the sum of the parts. Alcons is involved in providing the audio for ISE’s World Masters of Projection Mapping event, and that belief in combining sound and video is equally represented on the Alcons stand in what Back calls “sound in context”. The hourly presentation on the stand combines the capabilities of Astro Spatial Audio for production; projection by Sony; processing from Trinnov Audio; a screen supplied by DreamScreen; and acoustics from ShowTex.

The IP-based KVM specialist Adder Technology unveiled its ADDERLink Infinity 100T unit – a ‘zero U’ IPbased KVM for video, audio and USB – on the first day of ISE 2018. Billed as ‘the world’s smallest high performance KVM transmitter’ the unit is also known as the ALIF100T and can be plugged into the back of any computer, meaning it takes up zero rack space. John Halksworth, senior product manager at Adder Technology, told ISE Daily: “To reduce space you have to reduce power, hence the new transmitter unit only takes about 2W. No longer do you take up any rack space, but it is also easier to install. We’ve made it USB

powered because that takes things like PDUs and power bricks out of the way. “The idea was to make it simpler to use and install. So we’re solving a problem, instead of inventing one.” He added: “Retrofitting high performance KVM into environments designed around legacy, outdated equipment is challenging and expensive, sometimes requiring a complete redesign. However, with the new transmitter, businesses can easily and cost-effectively take advantage of the ADDERLink Infinity solution without this costly step.” The AdderLink Infinity 100T transmitter adds to the company’s existing product range, and works with the AfferLink Infinity Manager and AdderLink Infinity receivers. Adder says it will start shipping from mid-March 2018.

BY CHRIS FORRESTER Operators of sports stadiums have to be prepared to invest in fan engagement. That

was the message from the fan engagement panel at yesterday’s Sports Venue and Fan Engagement Summit (produced by SVG Europe and PanStadia &

Arena Management magazine). The expert panel said venues of all sizes need to be totally flexible in how they operate their sites; and as well as making the

Wrapped in a bubble of sound L-ACOUSTICS

the venue was moving towards push-button changeovers with moveable seating, lighting and the other back-office flexibility, in order to boost appeal. Paul Lipscombe, head of technology at Bristol’s Ashton Gate Stadium, explained that he and his colleagues were installing very high-capacity WiFi with 40Gbps trunking to ensure that the were ready for market demands and 4K coverage. They had also successfully hosted the AGMs for PwC and NatWest, with all the challenges they entailed. “Currently we are handling 30-40 such events a year, and it is growing,” he said. Lowry added that it was also important to remember that guests could range from toddlers to elderly folk, and the amenities had to be fully flexible. “Visitors need a great experience every time, so that the parents or grandparents also have fun and enjoy the visit.”

Illuminating video mapping ERGO CONCEPTS Stand: 8-R220

Stand: 7-X220 The L-Acoustics stand at ISE offers visitors a welcome respite off their feet and the chance to experience the company’s L-ISA Private sound system. L-ISA Private combines UHD music, an immersive 24-channel audio platform and professionalgrade loudspeakers, proprietary processing hardware and software-based audio tools. All L-ISA Private solutions offer 18 main channels, a bass channel and up to five overhead channels; only the type and number of speakers vary according to the size of the installation. Speaking to the ISE Daily, Sherif el Barbari, head of application for L-ISA commented: “This is a highly professional show, so we wanted to bring in something really special in its production and conception, but that is also great fun to enjoy at home.

football fan feel completely at home in the build-up as well as during and after a game, the venue had to place the same degree of emphasis on supplying a boardroom, or exploiting some of its real estate for a major business event which might have 5,000 attendees. Jeroen van Iersel, marketing manger at Amsterdam ArenA, said it wasn’t just that his venue had to switch from football to a giant music event; it has also been expanding, to provide much greater flexibility and adaptability. “This means handing 70-80 large conferences annually, each with break-out rooms for anywhere from 20 to 5,000 people. But we want to make every visitor, for whatever reason they’re here, feel welcome – and then convert that single visit to multiple extra visits.” David Lowry, technical advisor at Belfast’s SSE Arena, said

Sherif el Barbari and L-ISA Private client director Carlos Cortes

“If you want to experience a live concert without being among thousands of people, then this is the place for you to be.” The L-ISA Private sound systems can play streaming services, CDs, DVDs, Blu-ray and gaming consoles – but to make the most of the system, the company has developed Bubbles, a highdefinition music medium that looks, unsurprisingly, like a bubble. “As opposed to L-ISA Live,

where we bring a perfect listening experience to everyone in the audience, this actually focuses the experience in this beautiful space where you can just zoom out of the world around you,” said el Barbari. “You’re not going to be bothering people even if you’re listening at high levels here. The sound is so focused inside the area that outside, your partner’s not going to scream at you to turn it down.”

Lumi is a new allin-one interactive mapping concept, which comes as a turnkey lamp package providing video mapping on tables or floors for communications, entertainment or decoration of public spaces. Three items are on show at ISE; all are designed in stylish, custom-built lamp creations to fit the client’s branding and architecture lamp design. The Lumi Select enables any table to act as a multi-touch device. Users can navigate through menus, select items and interact with them without a change of furniture. The Lumi Aktiv interactive mapping option offers interactivity that can

provide educative or decorative applications. A first-time exhibitor at ISE, Ergo Concepts only released these products to market in September; with distribution partners across Europe, the French company is expecting to partner with other companies across the world to increase their market share.

Making Dante open BEGLEC Stand: 14-M125 The DBT-44 Dante I/O Interface is being demoed here in Amsterdam by Beglec. The company is a fan of Dante, yet it believes manufacturers need to make the interfaces to the protocol open, rather than embed it into proprietary products. Kevin Van der Taelen, export manager at Beglec, said: “Dante is

a relatively new concept, sending AoIP instead of classic cables. Our idea is to open it up for normal installations, so you can have an existing audio installation and pop this on top – you don’t have to throw away old kit. “We’ve had a very good response so far here at the show, because we’re quite unique with this, as other brands try to get people to buy their own products with Dante, whereas we’re opening

theinterface to make it more accessible,” concluded Taelen. The DBT-44 includes four balanced combo-inputs; Line and Mic (-24dB PAD and 48V Phantom); four balanced male XLR-outputs; two RJ45 Gigabit ethernet I/O ports with internal switch; and on power, 100-240VAC PowerCON, PoE. New distribution agreement signed DIGITAL PROJECTION Stand: 1-F70 Effective immediately, COMM-TEC will distribute Digital Projection’s range of projectors and displays in Switzerland and Austria, it was announced yesterday at ISE. COMM-TEC will also manage the pro-AV and education markets for Digital Projection in Germany. Andreas Voss, Digital Projection’s sales manager for the DACH countries, said: “Over the last three to four years, the Digital Projection brand and presence has grown in

Austria, Switzerland and Germany. This alliance will take our business to the next level. “COMM-TEC is the ideal choice as it has an extensive network alongside a solid reputation in the markets we wish to focus on.” General manager of business development for COMM-TEC Carsten Steinecker added: “The Digital Projection portfolio is a comprehensive offering in the upper market segment which has plenty of growth opportunities. “The brand is known for its cost-effective, leading-edge products.”

KLIPSCH Stand: 14-C160 Klipsch, an audio company and wholly owned subsidiary of VOXX International, is showcasing over 50 new high-performance custom speaker solutions for residential and commercial applications here in Amsterdam. Among the highlights are the company’s first foray into discreet speakers, designed for home owners that do not want to see where the sound is coming from. The company is demonstrating the Professional Series Reference speakers, of which the small aperture models – the ProR14C – are in-ceiling speakers no bigger than an average spotlight. Those can be supported in an installation by the Pro800SW Subwoofer, which can be hidden above a ceiling with sound

emanating from a similarly small aperture. Michael Buratto, product manager for component audio at Klipsch, stated: “The Pro Series Reference small aperture models are for good audio, have a good range of sound, but they’re designed for a home environment. They have as small a visual profile as possible so they look consistent with the rest of the lighting in the home.” He continued: “We are starting to get more into this more aestheticallyfocused design, than just soundfocused. We’ve always been a brand that concentrates on as big and as loud as possible, great-sounding speakers, focused on acoustic performance rather than what looks right necessarily for home owners. But as lights get smaller because of LEDs, TVs get smart and thinner, people want speakers that match up with that look.”

A brand new, patented tool for installing and servicing LED screens from Daktronics is being shown for the very first time at ISE. Daktronics installs electronic scoreboards and digital display systems throughout the world, using its own architecture. Daktronics provides a range of customised solutions, from LED video displays in shopping malls and sports venues to digital out-of-home signage. The company suggests that this new product could change the way LED displays are built and maintained. Jason Melby, international marketing for Daktronics, said: “The typical video display is built using really strong magnets to ensure each panel gets installed in the correct place and stays there. Unfortunately, this also means that as the magnets are engaged and the panel is drawn in, there is a high risk of damage to the outer LEDs on both the new panel and the ones all around it. “This product is a real gamechanger. The magnets can effectively be disengaged until the panel is in place, simply by twisting a few handles. This means installation time is cut dramatically, the risk of damage

is reduced, and the user can replace panels with ease.” The very first two 2.5mm panels direct from the factory are shown on their stand and the product is available for shipping today. Additional products are in process with the 1.9mm available in the next few months and the 1.5mm expected in the summer. Additionally, the company is Introducing a new generation of narrow pixel pitch Chip On Board technology that it describes as ‘revolutionary’. Still at the testing stage, this product is not expected to go to market until mid-2019. So why has the company chosen to display this on their stand at ISE?

Melby explained to the ISE Daily: “Daktronics is 50 years old this year. We’ve stayed at the forefront of innovation all that time and believe there’s no reason to hide behind secrecy. Although the product is not ready yet, we really wanted it to be seen, to show our stand visitors just what we’re up to and where we’re expecting technology to go. “This product is currently operating at over 2,000 nits but we’re expecting the final product to exceed that as shown in test conditions. We’re still testing with a view to improve the viewing angles and colour calibration but it’s a really exciting product that we’re looking forward to releasing next year.”

LISTEN TECHNOLOGIES Stand: 7-C190

Michael Buratto: “It’s time to look at speakers from an aesthetic rather than just acoustic point of view.”

Audio Everywhere from Listen Technologies is being described by the company as the first lowcost assistive listening solution for smartphones that utilises existing wireless networks for audio streaming. Audio Everywhere from Listen Technologies products began shipping globally in December 2017.

“ExXothermic, which is the parent company of Audio Everywhere, is still doing product development for Listen Technologies,” ExXothermic’s Wendy Glasser told the ISE Daily. “It’s a perfect partnership. We have the technology; they have the distribution channels.” According to the company, Audio Everywhere from Listen Technologies is easy to add to a venue’s wireless network and can accommodate thousands of users and over 50 channels,

providing more choices and an enhanced experience for patrons and guests. Both the MX3 and the smaller MX5 servers are on display at the stand. “We have the best latency on the market and I think that we have the maximum number of listeners that can connect at one time,” Glasser commented. “ISE has been a great show; we’ve had great reception from Listen distributors and people looking for audio solutions for assisted listening.”

Smart software for smoother work

ENGAGE WORKS Stand: 10-N171

Experiential technology agency Engage Works has officially launched its CoCreate advanced collaboration software at ISE 2018. Designed to take workplace collaboration to the next level, CoCreate brings content, data and ideas into a single, digital environment, in order to accelerate the business process. It combines a large touch-screen application – which pulls content from folders to display, annotate and manipulate across the touch surface – with an iPad companion app for the creation of transferable digital notes, pictures and videos. It can also link multiple screens together and send content between them. Steve Blyth, Engage Works’ founder and group managing director, told the ISE Daily: “We’ve being working on CoCreate as a project for a few years and we’ve

just launched it as a product in 2018. It is a collaborative tool that we’ve developed with companies like EY, PwC, SAP and Accenture, which wanted it to work as a tool to get high staff engagement, making speech smarter and collaboration faster. It’s cross-platform and is a big portal for assets that we use to showcase our work. We’re working on an iOS version as well.” CoCreate allows users to access multiple content streams simultaneously in an interactive environment, capturing thought processes in what the company calls a clear visual format. The CoCreate software is hardwareagnostic and can be retro fitted to existing legacy systems. Fully scalable from tablet to videowall, it is future expansion-friendly on the Universal Windows Platform (UWP), and is built for touch. The system is available as a licensed software platform with support or with supplied collaboration hardware.

system and ultra low form-factor two-way FOH and stage monitor pointsource systems. Speaking to the ISE Daily, Amate noted: “We spent quite a lot of R&D time to keep the cabinets compact. The shape of the front grille is very particular; it’s our custom design which allows more high frequencies to come through. We’ve also made a very robust but very lightweight shell.”

Nítid features a proprietary 110x11o aluminium long throw waveguide in the N208 line array, a 6in full-range custom carbon fibre cone driver in the N26, N36 and N46 column systems, and the company’s universal switching mode power supply. Integral plug-and-play power and control technology includes optimised DSP presets for near instantaneous setup and system configuration.

AUDIO-TECHNICA Stand: 7-N190

The third generation of AudioTechnica’s 5000 Series frequencyagile true diversity UHF wireless systems has made its European debut at ISE 2018. “This is the big push this year for Audio-Technica,” said Tim Page, marketing manager EMEA, speaking to the ISE Daily yesterday. “These new systems have a lot more features than previous generations. We’ve waited quite a while for these products to come through, so we’re really excited to show it here in Europe for the first time.” The receiver has been updated with a tuning bandwidth of 230MHz; 470–700MHz and users now have the option of selecting a standard receiver with two balanced XLR outputs (ATW-R5220) or a receiver that also includes a Dante output (ATW-R5220DAN). “There are six interchangeable microphone capsules, so you can really change the sound quality of the microphone to whatever you prefer. It’s up to the user’s taste,” added Page. “The belt-packs are rechargeable, which is quite a nice feature and there’s also a ‘secret’ feature: you tune in, and once your connection is established, you can specify a second frequency as backup. In case there’s suddenly a lot of interference, you can just press a button and switch over in a couple of seconds, so you don’t lose any sound quality.” Other new features include an antenna cascade output that connects up to eight receivers

so a single pair of antennas can feed up to 16 channels of wireless (these connectors also provide an RF cable check feature to aid in troubleshooting), and an auto squelch feature that automatically adjusts the setting to maximise operating range while minimising potential interference. “This is really a high-end live touring system. With the 5000, you can customise it as you wish; if you don’t need belt packs, it doesn’t matter – just use the microphones. You pick and choose what you need. “For us it’s quite a strategic product. We want to get into the touring industry and get on the road with artists, and it’s going to be a really nice product to help us do that.” Audio-Technica product manager Alexander Lepges shows off the updated flagship wireless system

Blending in to stand out IADEA Stand: 8-E390 Launched and presented this week here in Amsterdam, IAdea is debuting its IAdeaCare beta version at the show. IAdeaCare is a monitoring and management service designed to ensure digital signage deployment runs as planned. The product enables businesses to combine real-time tracking and monitoring data to predict, prioritise and maintain the system. It also allows users to remotely handle much of the system diagnosis processes, as well as remote reboots, firmware updates and status tracking. IAdea is expected to roll out the API for integration with content management solutions this year in Q2. IAdea is exhibiting alongside some of its strategic software partners, and is also demonstrating its AnyTiles solution, which retains

pixel quality and is scalable for any size of videowall, regardless of how many LCD panels are used. The company is also focusing on conference and meeting room applications and is displaying its integrated screens with built in media player on its stand in Hall 8. John C Wang, IAdea CEO, said: “This is a massive growth area and we predict that demand will grow 150% over the next year. To accommodate that growth, we have more products in our inventory to help improve space efficiency.” Wang told the ISE Daily: “Our ruggedised Android-based media players are used to all kinds of environments – we have over 1,000 placed in and around Jakarta, Indonesia throughout the rail network, providing signage solutions for the stations. Our servers cope easily even in the tropical conditions that Jakarta is known for.”

MULTITACTION Stand: 11-F170

The MultiTaction range of visual collaboration tools – which includes both multi-touch hardware and software – is being demonstrated at ISE 2018. CEO Pete Malcolm told the ISE Daily: “We’re just over 10 years old. For the first eight years we concentrated on hardware, but it’s been more software-focused in the last two. We can build our displays as large as anybody wants – 55in is

the biggest so far.” He added: “MT Showcase [software] is about rich media presentation application, and the customer can create this content themselves. You can also tell the wall to run a completely different application, and within seconds it will come up. When making a change in MT Showcase Editor, it instantaneously changes the wall.” MultiTaction’s key products also include the MT Canvus and MT Canvus Connect advanced visual collaboration software. Malcolm explained: “This system is all about

visualisation and productivity. Canvus can work in single user mode and allows you to create content on the fly, which you can scale up and down. The great thing about Canvus Connect is that it gives you the ability to replicate this in multiple places at once – you can connect literally hundreds of clients.” On the hardware side of things MultiTaction has a variety of iWall screens – from its 55in Full HD LCD stackable display through to its curved iWall, which is available in a curve of six or 12 displays.

New ranges of built-in loudspeakers on show FOCAL Stand: 14-C145 This year sees the launch of two new built-in speaker ranges from Focal, which are being showcased here in Amsterdam. The introduction of the entry-level 100 Series and additional products added to the mid-priced 300 Series are being showcased on the Focal stand, with both series offering a wide array of in-wall and in-ceiling models, stereo, AV and ambient music applications. Integration has become an important area of development for Focal and is steadily gaining amplitude in its overall loudspeaker

range. The integration line is aimed mainly at the home audio market, and according to the company, each speaker driver offers ‘very high levels of performance at competitive prices’. The 100 Series range is equipped with a new, more compact and less directive aluminium inverted dome tweeter and a new Polyglass cone speaker driver. According to the company, the in-ceiling loudspeakers are armed with a new crossover with an innovative architecture, improving off-axis listening while also reducing the undesired ‘bathroom effect’ often encountered with this type.

Acoustic engineering specialist Safe is here at ISE with the latest addition to its speaker family, the DF02. This multi-faceted omnidirectional speaker, at ISE for the first time, is designed for integrators looking to find a simple solution that will not look clumsy or out of place in a nightclub, restaurant or retail facility, enabling all people within the establishment to get the same quality of sound, wherever they are. Emiliano Boniotto, Safe commented: “After we designed our loudspeaker for acoustic measurement three years ago, the

DF01, we decided to recustomise it to create the first omnidirectional loudspeaker used in the world to make sound. The DF02 gives the same listening experience anywhere. It’s a new concept of loudspeaker.” Boniotto added: “This is our first time at ISE. For us it’s important to be here at this show; it’s a very big fair for our business. The difference between our company and others is we are acoustic engineers, and from that background we have created these speakers that are the realisation of our vision. We’ve had very good feedback from technicians here at ISE; our speakers are innovative and beautiful.”
