It was standing room only at the Main Stage in Hall 8 yesterday evening as the winners of the ISE 2019 Stand Design Awards, organised by EXHIBITOR magazine, were unveiled. EXHIBITOR editor Travis Stanton, who pointed out that he visited dozens of trade shows of all sizes in an average year, was effusive in his praise for the creativity and quality of many stands on the ISE show floor, calling the shortlisted stands ‘the best of the best’. Every stand on the ISE show floor at RAI Amsterdam was automatically entered into the free competition and judged on-site by an international panel of designers and exhibition industry experts. Finalists selected in each of the four size-based categories were notified on the show floor ahead of the awards ceremony. LED it be The eyes have it: one member of the ISE Daily team described Hall 12 as being ‘lit up like Times Square’, and this image of the Shenzhen Uniview LED stand (12-N60, 12-K62, 12-E30) certainly backs up that observation. The multi-LED display on the stand, complemented by the I Series interactive LED floor display, has been drawing (and stopping) plenty of traffic during the week.

AV can help hospitality tell its brand story The professional AV industry is expected to swell to more than $229 billion by 2023 and hospitality is one of the verticals to watch for, according to Sean Wargo, senior director of market intelligence at AVIXA. Wargo kicked off yesterday’s Hospitality Tech Summit at the Hotel Okura with AVIXA research showing that the hospitality sector is experiencing a better than average annual growth rate, forecast at six per cent between 2018 and 2023. APAC will lead the way, according to Wargo, and will become the fastest growing region within this time period, commanding 35 per cent of total hospitality revenues globally. AVIXA believes that this spells fresh opportunities for AV firms to diversify their businesses and stay robust against the onslaught of recession. “Pro AV and hospitality are coming together and there aren’t many installers currently working in this sector,” said Wargo. “Most of the time we think of the guestroom experience, but there’s so much more going on. It starts at the front door with digital signage and wayfinding – the AV industry can help enhance the guest experience from the outset.” Wargo added that while the hospitality sector

was keen to invest in AV kit primarily to improve customer experience and satisfaction, in common with other verticals the sector also expressed a desire to communicate its brand story. “Promoting a company’s brand is by far and away the main reason all sectors are investing in AV solutions,” he added. Wargo also pointed to the creative possibilities AV can now offer, using the nhow Amsterdam RAI hotel projection mapping event during ISE as a case in point. “This kind of conceptual design is the perfect example of what our industry can bring to hospitality,” he added. In terms of current AV spend within the hospitality sector, AVIXA research revealed that video displays came out on top, accounting for 34 per cent of total spend. While scale of investment is lower in hospitality than verticals such as corporate and education, AVIXA research into the hospitality sector revealed that a sizeable percentage of project budgets – almost six per cent – goes on AV. Systems integrators also came out top in the ranking of project lead lists, above internal IT departments and facilities and operations managers.

AV gets its game face on for eSports Rafal Mrzyglocki, chief executive of set design company Aram, spoke on ISE’s Main Stage yesterday about new event opportunities in eSports. “eSports is growing like crazy – there are bigger shows and also more medium and small sized shows happening too – there’s huge potential [in this sector] for the AV industry,” he said. Mrzyglocki drew on his experience of producing the Intel Extreme Masters for the last four years, as well as a multitude of ESL’s live events worldwide – from a 500-seat fan stage in Warsaw to a 20,000-seater stadium in New York. Around 46 million unique viewers watched the 2017 Intel Extreme Masters, an eSports event held in Poland, which drew a record 173,000 fans to the multipurpose Spodek Arena. To lure those ‘streamers’ out of their homes and to actual eSports events, he said more dedicated, purpose-built spaces were needed. “Arena events are getting bigger – they are going to require stadiums soon – while there are many smaller and mid-sized tournaments growing throughout the world.” According to Mrzyglock, much of the eSports work the firm carries out uses the same AV resources in terms of screens, lighting and audio, although there are certain

nuances that need to be accounted for. “It’s just like a show on stage, but you have players instead of artists and you need to remember that these players are the most important part of the show,” he said. He added that there are o!en many players on stage at the same time, and that it’s important that the players are well lit, but not overheated, by LED lighting. The organisers like to bring the live audience as close as possible to the audience, according to the designer: “although not too close, in case they start giving signals to the player”. Designing the set so that it can be viewed well by people watching the game remotely – via Twitch or Facebook – is another consideration. Because games follow a general narrative, Mrzyglocki added that his team tries to automate as many elements as possible. “Some of the graphics are pre-programmed, and if a player changes a weapon in-game we receive an automated prompt to show a shot of it on screen.” He advised designers not to be tempted to use the same stage for different eSports. “Each game has its own rules and demands. PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds is very different to Fortnite – you can’t generally use one stage for two games.”

DisplayNet in race for zero frame latency DVIGEAR Stand: 1-M110 Drawing crowds on the DVIGear stand is a race simulator designed to demonstrate how the company’s DisplayNet matrix switching series delivers zero frame latency, 4K/60p, artefact-free video with USB extension support. “It’s been so popular, the steering wheel broke on the second day and we had to go out and get a replacement,” laughed product manager Matthew Pulsipher. New for ISE is the DN‘150, which Pulsipher said offers a new entry point into the DisplayNet AV-over-IP platform. The DN‘150 is designed to offer the same zero latency and zero artefact 4K/60p video routing performance as the DN‘200 Series, but in a ‘value-oriented’ package. The units support HDMI 2.0 with up to 12-bit colour and HDCP 2.2, and offer independent multi-layer routing of HDMI, analogue audio, IR, and RS-232 signals. DN‘150 series devices are compatible with all DN‘200 series devices, and can be deployed within the same system. “A high level of interoperability between these products ensures the winning combination of performance and value in DisplayNet systems that utilise both product families,” said Pulsipher.

Hearing everyone in a room is a perennial problem in meeting rooms – which Sennheiser is trying to resolve with the TeamConnect Ceiling 2. Ann Vermont, public relations manager at Sennheiser, told the ISE Daily that the system has 28 microphones with automatic beam forming. The system will detect each different person – even if they’re moving around – and focus on their voice alone, while making the necessary adjustments for those who speak quietly or loudly. For larger or oddly shaped rooms, several ceiling microphones can be combined to ensure best coverage. TeamConnect Ceiling 2 can be used together with existing analogue conference systems or integrated into fully

digital systems, where it can also be controlled and monitored via an IP network. The ceiling microphone supports Power over Ethernet (PoE), Sennheiser Control Cockpit, Dante Domain Manager and the Crestron control platform. Via an open media protocol, TeamConnect Ceiling 2 can also be integrated into media and camera control systems. Another important development being shown on the stand is the company’s latest focus on education. “Places of education need to have perfect sound, in order to perfectly hear the teacher or lecturer, even if the student is hearing-impaired,” explained Vermont. MobileConnect is the new WiFi-based solution for hearing and uses the latest and most user-friendly technology possible. Operation is simple: the app for either iOS or Android is downloaded onto the mobile device, and the Personal Hearing Assistant then allows the user to adapt the sound to their individual hearing needs via the touchscreen on their phone.

Audio giant charts a new course HARMAN PROFESSIONAL Stand: 1-F5, 1-F10, 1-N5 A multi-year internal restructure at Harman Professional is now complete, and the company is poised to release a number of new products in 2019, said David Glaubke, director of global corporate communications – professional solutions. The restructuring commenced before the acquisition of Harman by Samsung was announced in November 2016. The primary result of the changes, said Glaubke, has been “the creation of three centres of competence: Aarhus in Denmark for lighting; Richardson, Texas for DSP, so!ware and electronics; and Northridge in California for acoustics”. The new structure is expected to allow Harman to maximise the possibilities of its entire brand family, which includes

iconic brands such as AKG, JBL and Studer. And although the acquisition by Samsung was undoubtedly one of pro-audio’s biggest business stories for several years, the impact dayto-day has apparently been fairly minimal. “Two years [since the deal] we are still operating as a separate company,” says Glaubke. “But what being owned by Samsung means is that we have access to a great deal of engineering and expertise [that can inform new product developments].” And there are plenty of new products to be seen at ISE 2019, including the AKG CBL Series Boundary Layer Microphones. Available in two coverage patterns to support a variety of meeting space sizes and shapes, these microphones are suitable for conference rooms, education spaces, and more. The present momentum will continue, hinted Glaubke, with a “robust product roadmap” now in place across the portfolio.

Sport is not enough: Enhancing the fan experience Sports venues and fans have evolved so much in recent years that it’s no longer enough for fans to engage just with what’s happening in the field. That was the view of the How Technology Enhances The Fan Experience panel at yesterday’s AGORA conference, organised by MONDO | STADIA. Interestingly, both fans and venues are driving this expectation. Lukas Buhl, R&D acoustics, TW Audio, said: “Of course, the fan wants to have a great experience; the sport is not enough anymore. On the other side, sport isn’t the venue’s only focus either – they want to sell merchandise, offer advertising, and so on.” When it comes to delivering this complete experience, a holistic approach to AV needs to be taken and venues

are increasingly wanting their video, lighting and sound to be integrated. As Thierry Chapiteau, global segment director, Signify, said: “We work with a lot of customers and they all have the same vision – lighting, video and sound together. This creates a complete customer journey, from outside where the façade displays messages, then inside the bowl you can create endless combinations, not only for the people in the stadium, but also for zoning, so you can customise the mood to the game.” Stephen Hogg, head of sports projects, d&b audiotechnik, agreed: “We’re also seeing this in the increase in sound and light shows at football games. We’re slowly joining up the

dots between sound, video and lighting to deliver a more holistic approach.” Ultimately, however, the bottom line is where the success of fan engagement programmes is measured. James Keen, group marketing manager at Tripleplay, said: “Engagement is important because it ensures revenue keeps coming in. Having said that, the better the experience, the more money you’ll make because it keeps people coming back. I think many sports are unusual in that you pay for a ticket in the hope that you’ll be entertained, but there’s no guarantee. To create a wider experience around this protects you a bit more, brings people in earlier, keeps them here longer and ultimately encourages them to spend more.”

AED Group invests in PIXERA hardware and software

Will cost and lack of leadership derail D-Cinema’s second wave? A lack of clear leadership and a cash-strapped studio system in the throes of consolidation are factors that threaten to hold back digital cinema’s second wave, according to renowned cinema industry consultant Michael Karagosian. Speaking at ISE’s Digital Cinema Summit at the Hotel Okura on Wednesday a!ernoon, Karagosian, who was part of the team that launched Dolby Surround Sound, claimed that there’s been too much talk about new HDR systems and not enough talk about the problems that need solving for HDR to become a reality. “We’re going to need a new way to manage colour... because it’s not likely that you are going to have the same dynamic range on all the screens,” he warned. “Ten years from now, do we want a master for every type of dynamic range or do we want it to be managed in-room? In the audio world, they are talking about mastering one immersive sound track and reproducing it on a variety of systems – we need to start thinking like that in the image world, because that’s what we’re moving towards,” he added. Unlike the first wave of digital cinema, which saw vendors such as Texas Instruments and JVC as well as the Hollywood

studios [via the Digital Cinema Initiative] pave the way for standards, he says that there’s currently a lack of drive by any one party to push D-Cinema adoption conversations forward. Karagosian argued that cost was another factor that threatens to derail D-Cinema’s progress. While studios helped fund the first wave of digital cinema through a Virtual Print Agreement, which saw film distributors pay a subsidy based on the amount they saved on film prints, Karagosian claimed the industry would be reluctant to subsidise a second wave in the current climate. “We are already seeing six studios collapse into five, and in the coming years I see this collapsing into four. This is a tough business, so to start giving money away to pay for new projectors is really crazy.” He warned, however, that the Digital Cinema Initiative is already starting to specify “very expensive” forms of equipment. “And as soon as you start specifying things, people are soon going to ask, ‘Well, aren’t you going to pay for it?’” Karagosian – who was also a technology advisor for the National Association of Theatre Owners during the first wave

of digital adoption – predicted that HDR upgrades will occur primarily in exhibitors’ opening night premium large format (PLF) screens, with smaller screens going for the “lowest cost technology” that they can get away with: “and it’s unlikely to be HDR because that’s the economics of the business,” he added.

German manufacturer and distributor Adam Hall Group has announced a new technology partnership with Canadian DSP developer Xilica. As part of this cooperation, Adam Hall Group is expanding the installation portfolio within its LD Systems brand in order to provide AV planners, integrators, installation service providers and end-users with a wide range of integrative solutions for fixed installation. The Xilica partnership also makes it possible to further expand upon the functionality as well as the Universal Control approach of Xilica’s Designer So!ware as the central control platform for installation projects. Donny Chow, managing director of Xilica, said: “With Universal Control we enable users to control products from various manufacturers via a central platform, without having to refer to expensive and time-consuming services from external specialists in order to establish a functional configuration.” Gabriel Alonso Calvillo, integrated systems product manager at the Adam Hall Group, added: “Instead of confronting users with a completely new system that requires retraining, we can rely on Xilica Designer as a renowned so!ware solution. As a demonstration, screens on the stand are showing an action-packed movie, proving that even when sound is routed through its equipment, the system’s low latency means that the sound is perfectly synced. All of Pulse-Eight’s matrices feature full online monitoring, and offer installation tools such as link quality test and real-time temperature monitoring. Also on the stand are products from the Zektor brand, including the ProAudio audio distribution range, which enables maximum audio distribution and controls including volume, balance, bass, treble and a five-band graphic equaliser on each of the eight zones, plus audio delay functions and digital-to-analogue conversion.

ISE Show-stoppers The two standout projection events of ISE 2019 have been delighting show attendees all this week. Sviatovid by Bart Kresa, pictured le!, which features Panasonic projectors, has been on display outside Entrance C of the RAI Amsterdam, while a huge projection mapping display has taken place on the side of the nhow Amsterdam RAI hotel adjacent to the exhibition centre. The nhow project, pictured right, is the collaborative work of ISE and RAI Amsterdam, together with Technology Partners Green Hippo, LANG AG, Panasonic, and ProDisplay.

Speakers should be heard, not seen ATLASIED Stand: 6-K160 ISE sees the introduction by AtlasIED of the SHS Strategically Hidden Speaker to an international audience for the first time. The SHS Series is claimed to fill a niche in commercial speakers, ‘merging superior sound quality with thoughtful design’ with the result that the speaker virtually disappears into the ceiling. The concealed design of the SHS is achieved by Adaptive Dispersion Lens Technology, a new, patented waveguide form. Only a 3in diameter lens and a micro trim ring are visible on the ceiling. Making a splash HB-LASER Stand: 8-M300 For the first time, pixel-accurate videos and pictures can be combined in three dimensions, by using the height of a water fountain. 3D HydroMatrix is an exclusive patent-pending innovation from Germany’s HB-Laser. The minimal pixel pitch between the LED water fountain nozzles helps 3D visuals to form. Lutz Bartl, managing director, said: “3D HydroMatrix opens up new design possibilities that have never been seen before. You can make animated sculptures out of water and light.” 3D HydroMatrix modules comprise 10 nozzles and 10 RGBW LEDs, each of which contains all the components necessary for water and lighting staging. In the works for more than two years, Milan was created by some of the prime movers behind the AVB-promoting AVnu Alliance. Accepting the pro AV market’s specific needs for moving time-sensitive video, audio and data across a network, Milan builds upon the foundation of AVB with interoperability at the application layer. The result, say Milan’s proponents, will be a new generation of products that work together successfully at new levels of convenience, reliability and functionality. Echoing the previous approach of the AVnu Alliance with regard to AVB, Milan will be supported by a specification and certification process designed to guarantee interoperability among Milan devices. The benefits of the technology were explored in detail at the session, which also revealed details of some of the first related products. The Absen stand this year is its biggest ever, covering 264sqm, the hero of which is the Fine Pixel Generation line of narrow pixel pitch displays. Alex Couzins head of brand and marketing at Absen, told the ISE Daily: “In 2018, Absen manufactured some 240,000sqm of LED screens – the equivalent of just under one football pitch size every week.” Couzins and his colleagues are also showing the latest LED solutions for retail, live events and entertainment, as well as OOH and sports venues, including the Polaris, Acclaim and N-Plus ranges. Absen is partnering with a number of providers on its ISE stand and beyond: the company is using Pixera media servers from AV Stumpfl on its LED displays, and collaborating with Green Hippo/Notch on an interactive LED archway. Couzins added that the company has established a new distributor deal with German company Kern & Stelly, giving it better access to the region’s corporate and rental markets. Absen’s team is helping to advise visitors about different use cases and giving one-to-one demonstrations, as well as hosting a presentation at 11:00 today and hosting drinks on the stand.

It has brought several kinds of LED screen to the show, including the Titan RT Series, for outdoor rental led display; Reaper RE, an all-functional LED display; and the Novid LT Series – an exhibit frame LED display with a new stacking system. New to European visitors is the BLOX Series of exhibition frames for rental use which forms the main part of Rocketsign’s ISE presence in Hall 8. French manufacturer Active Audio has confirmed the appointment of its first marketing and customer support director, Eric Grandmougin. Grandmougin, who took up his role with the company on 1 January 2019, is well-known in the French AV marketplace for his own successful consultancy operation. In his new position at Active Audio, he will consult with the French manufacturer’s senior management and strategic committee on market trends and technologies.

He will also suggest new products for development, as well as provide assistance to distributors in the form of technical advice, commissioning and tuning for complex projects, and training. Grandmougin said: “My first goal is to give distributors and consultants the tools to better understand the rich possibilities of Active Audio. The customer support and marketing actions are somewhat related because, when we put tools in place, we must first help users to become familiar with them.”

Pro audio connectivity, networking and bridging solution specialist DirectOut is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year. It is marking the occasion at ISE by showcasing its modular audio converter Prodigy MC, as well as the Globcon so!ware that now underpins all DirectOut products. Accessories specialist Smart things is showcasing a new inductive charger for mobile devices that should become commercially available in around May or June this year, depending on the certification process. The sDot charger is designed to sit on a table top and charge a device without the need for cables or cords. It will support any device that is compliant with the Qi wireless charging standard. According to CEO Thomas Detemple, the advantage of sDot over other products is that it can be installed without the need to damage furniture. The charger works with a table thickness of up to 35mm. Initially conceived as a B2C product, Smart things is now tending to focus on the B2B market, including segments such as hotels. The consumer market is also an option though, as the units are expected to cost around €99.

Smart acquisition CONTROL4 Stand: 10-N130 Switzerland-based NEEO, creator of the smart home remote, has been acquired by Control4 to accelerate the corporation’s delivery of remotes, touch panels, keypads and other smart home devices. Based in Bern, the NEEO product team has been led by the company’s founder Raphael Oberholzer and will be working with the Control4 engineering group in Salt Lake City on the development of the next generation of Control4 products. Oberholzer will take a leadership role in the development of Control4’s interaction devices and will report to Charlie Kindel, senior vice president, products and services, at Control4. Oberholzer said: “From the start, it was obvious that both our companies are passionate for customercentric design. By joining the Control4 team, we can execute our shared vision to accelerate the creation of beautiful products consumers want in their smart home.” NEEO previously sold its smart home remote to homeowners online but is discontinuing all direct-

Audio innovator in ISE debut HOLOPLOT Stand: 7-W199 Berlin-based audio hardware and software manufacturer Holoplot is exhibiting at ISE for the first time. Speaking on day three of ISE 2019, marketing manager Ole Schnieders said that the show had been a “hugely encouraging experience” for the company. “We have been consistently busy since the start of the show,” he added. “It’s become very clear that this is a great show for us, bringing us into contact with the kind of potential customers we wish to meet.” The company’s ability to support immersive audio deployments undoubtedly means it’s well-positioned as such installations become increasingly commonplace at live events and in fixed installations. For example, Holoplot’s ORION-Series sound system incorporates wave field synthesis (WFS) technology, making it highly flexible and suitable for speech-oriented projects and immersive soundscape creation, among other potential applications. Algorithms allow the authentic reproduction of any sound object, while Holoplot’s beam steering encompasses both the vertical and horizontal planes. “The system has been attracting plenty of attention; we are very happy to be here at ISE,” added Schnieders.

Digital signage specialist Data Modul is showcasing several products in Hall 15 as it seeks to augment its range to meet the rising demand from customers for specially shaped screens and signage boards. According to Kevin Schmidt, product marketing manager at Data Modul, the demand is being driven by a growing need for more eye-catching displays and presentations. Data Modul is in a position to provide a variety of form factors and screen types, with an emphasis on robust and sleek design. Visitors to the Data Modul stand can view form factors ranging from large, horizontally stretched displays through to a new line of smaller and very slim displays that have been designed for retail shelving, for example. The company prides itself on its flexibility that is enabled by the use of masks or moulds that can easily be adapted to meet customer requirements. The company provides all aspects of the display unit, from the housing through to touch screens and even the software to manage content on distributed displays. It also integrates some AI functionality to enable some personalisation of screens and sees gesture technology as a future area of interest. Its biggest markets for sales are Europe’s German-speaking region (DACH) and the United States, and it also plans to focus on China as a next step.

Versatile messaging INNES Stand: 8-G272 Among a clutch of innovations at Innes is the Slate106, an electronic paper solution for digital signage. The 6in electronic ink screen sports many features, including Android and iOS applications for inserting messages on an office door, an NFC badge reader and the ability to send data to a phone. The SMH300 Hub device connects Slate106 displays to a corporate network and can receive a JavaScript application – for example, to connect to MS Exchange for room booking, or to a corporate directory such as LDAP/AD for names and functions of employees displayed on an office door. It has three touch buttons and is just 8mm in thickness. Also from Innes at ISE 2019, the DMB400 media player is claimed by the company to be one of the most powerful media players on the market. Beyond the quality of its graphics engine, it stands out – the company claims – thanks to its ability to natively support PDF and PowerPoint files. Delivering P3 colour space, fully compliant HDR-10 and patented software that keeps the wall calibrated at 97% for greater uniformity, Christie MicroTiles LED is said to be suitable for broadcast sets, corporation venues, museums, retail, stadiums, arenas, and higher education. The new product is also claimed to be the first LED wall solution to integrate AVoIP via support for SDVoE. Ted Romanowitz, senior product manager, Christie, said: “Christie has been very successful with the MicroTiles brand – end customers and our integrators love it because it makes for an easy creative solution. With that in mind, Christie took everything great about MicroTiles and brought it to narrow pixel pitch LED.” MicroTiles LED is bezel-less, and currently features 1.5mm and 1.25mm pixel pitches, with the possibility of smaller pitches in the future. CLOSING KEYNOTE: WHERE CREATIVITY MEETS TECHNOLOGY Tupac Martir, co-founder of Satore Studio, presents today’s Closing Keynote address and tells Paul Bray of his belief that technology should enhance the creative process, and not limit it

Tupac Martir, the acclaimed multimedia artist and visual designer, will bring the curtain down on ISE’s 2019 conference and education programme when he delivers today’s Closing Keynote address. Martir originally trained as a painter, and the stellar client list of his London-based studio, Satore, ranges from BMW and Dior to Beyoncé and Elton John. “We do visual design for live entertainment using different techniques in arts, media and technology,” he explains. “Whether that’s video, lights, sets, or costumes, the important thing is that it’s creative.” Martir sees no inherent tension between technology and creativity. “I started coding when I was six years old, so the whole tech side of things is very natural to me. Artistic endeavour and technical management go hand in hand here.” Asked whether the creative process begins with an artistic concept or a technology, he replies that it’s a bit of both. “I don’t always know whether seeing a certain technology has opened something in my subconscious to develop one of the stories I had in my head, or whether I

20

had an idea and eventually found the technology I needed to make it a reality. But I tend to believe – or I want to believe – that it’s more about drawing things up first and then finding how we can get technology to make them work. I always draw everything before it goes into a machine, and I carry a sketchbook to note down ideas. Ideas brew in my subconscious until I need them, then I select the best technology that will allow me to enhance them. “I’m a big believer in that type of workflow. If you make things on a machine you’re limited by the machine, not by your intelligence or creativity.” Choosing technology that complements the job, enhancing rather than limiting the creative process, is critical for Martir. So in his Closing Keynote today, as well as showing some of his recent work, he plans to demonstrate the kind of tools that he and his studio would use to create just such a keynote presentation – the equivalent of a painter’s portrait of himself at the easel. He clearly relishes the sleight-of-hand, and hints that his delivery may be as theatrical as his work. “Anyone who’s seen me talk knows I can’t stand still. When I gave the

keynote at USITT in 2016 I did 9,000 steps!” Asked about some of the technologies that excite him, Martir says: “I love motion capture and I’m very interested in AI and seeing where it will go.” He’s fascinated by the idea of sensors that can tell what your fingers and hands do, so you could create commands and control objects without ever touching them. Need to bring in a strobe? Just wave your hands in a certain way. “I’m amazed by the amount of things that are starting to come to market for tracking,” he says. “I think tracking is really the future of this industry, just like automation once was the future. The integration of lighting, cameras, real time rendering – all those elements combined are creating worlds that three years ago would have been impossible. “What interests me is how I can create a bridge between old and new technologies and, by combining them and finding a place in between them, generate something brand new that inhabits both worlds.”

Many CTS holders in Europe are also progressing further in their AV education and going on to achieve additional specialised credentials: CTS-D (Design) or CTS-I (Installation). All three certifications are ANSI accredited under the International Organization of Standardization (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) ISO/IEC 17024:2012 General Requirements for Bodies Operating Certification Schemes of Persons programme. “CTS benefits both employee and the employer, but I feel that CTS benefits the employee most,” said Justin Paveley, CTS-D, CTS-I, engineering director, AVMI. “CTS has given me self-confidence, credibility and a technical proficiency that I wouldn’t have got elsewhere.” “In our business model, we see our main selling point as being a source of expert AV knowledge,” said Marcus Boij, technical director, Informationsteknik Scandinavia AB. “Having CTS-certified staff has allowed us to demonstrate that knowledge and compete with much larger companies when pitching for high-profile tenders. CEDIA releases new white papers HDR video and indoor lighting are covered in the publications, which are available online now Human-centric lighting is just one topic covered in Quality of Light in the Home

By Jo Ruddock CEDIA has recently released two new white papers, An Integrator’s Guide to HDR Video and Quality of Light in the Home. An Integrator’s Guide to HDR Video explores the fundamentals of HDR [high dynamic range] video and how it relates to human vision, and underlines HDR standards, formats and connectivity to ensure compatible system design and integration. Walt Zerbe, senior director of technology and standards at CEDIA, explained: “We have seen incredible advances in HDR over the years to the point that it is an executable display option in home environments, but not without some guidance. This white paper is intended to provide a baseline knowledge of high dynamic range to assist with the specification and deployment of the consumer HDR video systems.”

Quality of Light in the Home includes a deep dive into the effects of indoor lighting and colour temperature, and their considerations for designers and installers. “Human-centric lighting is an area in which we are seeing rapid progress from a technology standpoint,” said Zerbe. “This white paper provides a great baseline for integrators to get familiar with the topic and to be able to talk to their clients about it.” Quality of Light in the Home covers topics including the benefits and challenges of human-centric lighting technology, consumers’ personal control, wellness considerations for end users, and installation implications. The new white paper continues the global association’s strategic focus on distilling complex and ever-changing technologies into more digestible formats for home technology professionals. CEDIA volunteer Sam Woodward, a subject matter expert on lighting who serves as customer education leader for Lutron in London, previewed the new paper in a

recent CEDIA Tech Council Podcast. “As we’re now spending so much time indoors, we need to think about the way of making that environment as conducive to productivity, well-being and good health as possible,” he said in an episode titled All About Lighting. “So, human-centric lighting is all about people.” Both of these new white papers are available for CEDIA members to download at no cost in the resource library and on the CEDIA Online Community. White papers can be purchased by non-members for $99 at cedia.net. A key directive of CEDIA’s current strategy is creating standards, developing best practices and defining guidelines to elevate professionalism and drive member and industry success. With this in mind, CEDIA will be releasing a third white paper, The Integrator’s Guide to Resolution, shortly and is evaluating more than 30 other topics, with a goal of publishing six further white papers in 2019. www.cedia.net

We’ve seen 4K, now expect 8K TVs/projectors As sure as 4K has now become mainstream, 8K will continue to develop and shouldn’t be ignored, writes Mark Craven For any new AV system, whether it’s a dedicated home theatre or more compact media room, a 4K display is now essential. A wide range of available sources from subscription streaming services and broadcast channels through Ultra HD Blu-ray and Kaleidescape systems means there’s no lack of content. The good news for system builders is that 2019 brings a bigger slate of 4K hardware (both projectors and flatscreen TVs) with improved performance. For a large-scale cinema space, long-throw projectors remain the obvious option. New product lines from the likes of Sony, Epson and JVC continue to pack features that boost their installation flexibility, including motorised zoom/ focus, lens memory presets and colour management suites. Yet under-the-hood improvements, such as Sony’s HDR Reference mode, are aiming to make these home cinema stalwarts a better fit for 4K HDR sources where light-level and contrast management are key to a picture perfect performance, and laser and LED alternatives to standard UHP lamps are adding performance finesse, not to mention quicker boot-up times and longer ‘lamp-life’. Meanwhile, the arrival of Texas Instruments’ 4K DLP solution in 2016 gave rise to an explosion of lower-cost 4K models ideal for smaller rooms and tighter wallets. And then there are ultra-short-throw models, which allow for a large-screen experience to be added into a non-traditional environment. Line-of-sight and throw ratio problems are eradicated – all that’s needed is space for a screen (or a patch of white wall).

Complete remote monitoring for meeting spaces ASHTON BENTLEY Stand: 14-N100

abSee, a meeting room system monitoring platform, has been launched by Ashton Bentley in partnership with video communications cloud service specialist Pinnaca. The platform provides a cloud, or on-premise, webbased overview of meeting room technology. This allows users to have full administration of their communication platforms, while being able to monitor in real time the audio-visual hardware and network, plus alerts. In addition, metrics enable greater understanding about how room systems are used and so improve ROI. All Ashton Bentley meeting spaces have the capability to be connected to abSee, so any estate of any given size can be covered through the subscription-based service. Traditionally, monitoring services cover codec, bridge/MCU, cloud services and large control systems. However, all video collaboration systems require audio-visual and associated services to ‘wrap’ around the communication platform, and these are not monitored. As a minimum this includes display(s), audio system, input signal routing/processing, microphones, user interface, power and network

Not every AV set-up demands a projector, of course, and flatscreen TVs no longer need to feel like a cinematic stepdown. Indeed, the native brightness capabilities of LED-lit LCD TVs and even their OLED rivals makes them arguably the go-to solution for a set-up where effective playback of HDR and wide colour content is a primary concern, particularly if Dolby Vision or HDR10+ support is desired. As usual, battles rage in this arena – OLED champions ‘true black’, while LCD marches ahead with brighter and more colour-rich displays. Choosing a flatscreen solution, however, doesn’t always boil down to display technology – aesthetics, plus consideration of bonus features (voice control, advanced smart platforms able to integrate with whole home systems, in-built speaker systems), all come into play. As you’ll no doubt be aware, in 2018 8K technology stopped being a dot on the horizon and became consumer reality, first with monitors from Sharp, then a range of QLED TVs from Samsung and JVC’s NX9 8K ‘e-shi"’ projector. An absence of native 8K content provides ammunition for naysayers but ignores the benefits of 8K upscaling – there’s no need to wait for broadcast or broadband-delivered content to experience the technology’s greater detailing and improved colour gradation. And as sure as 4K has now become mainstream, 8K will continue to develop. Panel manufacture will ramp up this year and next, increasing hardware availability and reducing price tags. How long it stays a niche technology remains to be seen, but for a genuine, state-ofthe-art cinema room an 8K display shouldn’t be ignored.

Modular backdrop system specialist AV Drop is showcasing the latest developments in the creation and assembly of stage structures for events. This year it is presenting a new starter kit for event organisers. Exhibiting at ISE for the fourth time, the company says it prides itself on improving the reliability and versatility of its products each year. Highlights of its range include self-standing walls that are up to 7.5m high. In the event industry, where scenography setups are still built by means of wood, hammers and nails, AV Drop says it provides a solid and cost-effective alternative made of resistant aluminium and fabric.

With 12 inputs and eight outputs, each input channel can be individually adjusted for gain. Dante input channel conversion is supported alongside Dante output, with neither affecting the other. The move follows the introduction in early 2018 of the large-format Halo-A arena system. As its name suggests, Halo-B sits between Halo-A and Halo-C in both physical size and overall system output. Built on the same ‘maximum headroom’ design principles as Halo-A to ensure consistent performance across all SPL levels and consistent horizontal dispersion patterns across the operating frequency band, Halo-B is a twoway reflex-loaded line array element featuring dual 8in LF drivers and four 1in HF drive units. The $15,995 appliance marries AJA’s video I/O with HDR analysis tools from Colorfront in a 1RU chassis. Onboard tools for monitoring and analysing include PQ and Hybrid Log Gamma (HLG) for 4K/UltraHD workflows. The unit takes in up to 4K sources across four 3G-SDI inputs and loops the video out, allowing analysis at any point in the production workflow. It will also support display referred SDR (Rec.709), HDR ST 2084/PQ and HLG analysis and scene referred ARRI, Canon, Panasonic, RED and Sony camera colour spaces.

At ISE, Famasete is presenting a range of multi-touch kiosks (indoor and outdoor) that allow the consumer to make what it says will be “simple and quick” reservations and be able to purchase a product avoiding long queues. Inês Barbosa at Famasete, said: “The solution allows the seller or chain of restaurants to improve their service to the public through innovative systems that promote the brand. These stand-up Wingsys QX003PS kiosks can use different touchscreen displays, a ticket printer, 1D and 2D barcode scanners, high frequency smart card readers and a payment pinpad, among other solutions.” The company is also highlighting the ‘Classroom of the Future’ a special project implemented by Famasete in several schools in different Portuguese municipalities. The AVN-CU2-DANTE is designed for two commentators and uses Dante AoIP together with four wire connections, which enables it to bridge the gap between old and new technology. This allows ease of connectivity and functionality of AoIP together with the legacy connections needed to operate with the existing infrastructure in stadiums and sports grounds. The unit has two mic/line inputs with a wide, adjustable gain range and +48V phantom power. It has two stereo headphone outputs with lockable jack sockets, suitable for operation by two commentators. The AVN-CU4-DANTE is a dual version of the AVN-CU2DANTE, which provides four mic/line inputs and four stereo headphone outputs and is suitable for operation by three or four commentators. Huddle rooms: deal or no deal? By sheer numbers, huddle rooms perhaps represent the single biggest opportunity in the market – but those numbers don’t tell the whole story, argues Ian McMurray Whenever I hear anyone talk about huddle rooms, my mind is taken back, for reasons that aren’t wholly clear to me, to a 1939 movie called Babes in Arms. You probably haven’t seen it. Only those who endured wet Sunday a!ernoons in the UK in the 1960s know what it’s like to regularly watch ancient Hollywood movies in black and white. Starring Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland, the film describes how, in the face of competition from talking pictures and the decline of vaudeville, a group of children decide to put on a show by themselves. It features the immortal line “Let’s do the show right here”, which became pretty much a mainstay of so-called ‘backyard musicals’. Actually, I do recall why I make that connection. Typically, a show takes a lot of planning. It requires formal processes. It needs specialist equipment. Everyone has a designated role. So: very much like the business meetings we used to know. But now, much like the kids in Babes in Arms, anyone can have a meeting wherever and whenever they like, without all those encumbrances. We have pop-up meetings, just like we have pop-up shops and pop-up restaurants. THE NEW MANTRA I’m talking, of course, about the huddle room phenomenon. In this brave new world in which collaboration is the new mantra, we can put on a meeting right here, right now. Well, we could; except that the art of communicating with each other without the support of technology appears to be a lost one. That’s especially true for millennials for whom digital devices represent some kind of life support system. So, we need an electronic way of sharing; not only with those in the huddle room but, increasingly, with colleagues or customers somewhere else. A complex, expensive video conferencing suite is, of course, out of the question, which has given rise to a host of audiovisual systems designed to facilitate ad hoc, casual information exchange. So far, so good. AV integrators have always thrived on providing support for meetings, from the simplest

You haven’t got a clue whether it’s good with pasta, has the right nose or whether it’s worth the money? Mon Lumi to the rescue. Interactive illumination from this ‘smart lamp’ range will project just the information you need – you can let a ‘virtual sommelier’ help you with the right choice. That’s one of a number of innovations from Ergo Concepts, the Nîmes-based digital agency behind Mon Lumi. These lamps are being presented at ISE designed for public areas such as malls, stores, hotels and bars. Mon Lumi Object, for example, comes with object recognition. Pick up an item and have information about it projected by the smart lamp. The Aktiv Lamp is based on movement detection for developing and playing various animated games for kids. Mon Lumi Info is for mapping decoration and precise RFID product information. Ergo’s Mon Lumi brand provides information, entertainment, decoration and interaction directly on tables, desks and floors by integrating all the required technology into a lamp. In turn, claims co-founder Marc Judor, this gets rid of the constraints of heavy, bulky AV, or multitouch technologies. The lamps come in several elegantly designed shapes and sizes, as well as applications ranging from simple mapping versions, to more sophisticated interactive mapping solutions and full blown virtual multitouch

projector/screen combination all the way to all-singing, all-dancing boardroom suites. More meetings equals more opportunities, right? Well: yes and no. Yes, back in 2015, the o!-quoted study by Wainhouse Research opined that there might be as many as 50 million huddle rooms worldwide. That’s a lot of spaces to equip. But then again, no. The key characteristics of huddle room systems are that they are a) low cost, b) easy to install, and c) simple to use. It would be easy to conclude, therefore, that there’s a ton of business out there to be had; but with low revenue, low margin and low potential for value add. That goes somewhat counter to the historic integrator business model. DOESN’T AUGUR WELL This was brought into sharp focus for me recently when I was talking to a major supplier of huddle room equipment about training. “One of our USPs,” he said, “is that our products are very easy to set up, so in most cases product training isn’t necessary.” So, to exaggerate for effect: the product just needs to be delivered, not installed, and users will get themselves up to speed. That doesn’t seem to augur well for the integrator community. In fact: why would the end user involve an integrator at all? Huddle rooms, it seems reasonable to conclude, represent something of a paradigm shi! for integrators – and one they’re getting used to as the world becomes increasingly plug ’n’ play. Their role is becoming one of educator, of trusted advisor, perhaps in collaboration with specialists who can advise on not just equipment, but design, layout, acoustics, furnishing and so on. For end users, huddle rooms may appear to be somewhat trivial, and thus require minimal thought. The fact is that, the way businesses operate today, they are mission critical and require no less planning than a boardroom. They need an integrator, because those spaces really need to work. In fact, looking back: drawing a parallel between the barn in which those kids put on their show and modern meeting spaces perhaps wasn’t such a clever idea a!er all.

Acoustic panels can be fitted in restaurants to make speech more intelligible

First-time exhibitor Isinac is showcasing its range of acoustically absorbent panels. Designed for environments in which the potential for reverberation exists, making speech less intelligible – such as restaurants, call centres, hospitals, sports centres and schools – they can, says the company, be simply retrofitted in almost any space. Reduction of echo of up to 70% is said to be possible. The Spanish company offers a broad range of acoustic solutions, including self-adhesive panels as well as panels suspended via anchors, that are available in a range of shapes (square, hexagonal, circular, cylinders and cubes), colours, finishes and thicknesses. Additionally, custom products can be developed. The panels are also available using flame-retardant and anti-stain materials. Also on show are samples of Ikla, Isinac’s range of photoabsorbent light fittings, and Absorberella, the objective of which is to reduce street noise.

UFO lands at ISE AUDIO EXCELLENCE Stand: 1-Q110

A completely new sonic concept for large TVs and solid screens is being launched by Audio Excellence at ISE. ‘UFO’ is said to create the illusion that the sound is emanating directly from the centre of a hard-surfaced screen when, in fact, the speakers are placed elsewhere in the room. Patrice Congard, CEO of Audio Excellence, said: “In 1996 I le" the sound reinforcement industry to focus on what I perceived as the main issue facing home cinema installations: the conventional solid projection screen was a physical barrier to the proper appreciation of a movie’s sound track. This has been solved with a new breed of woven acoustically transparent projection screens. “However, today, as flat screen TVs grow in size, they have become a trending alternative for the drop-down projection screens traditionally used in a media room. This immediately presents a problem: how can the sound come from the image displayed on a large rigid solid screen, like a flat panel TV?” The company says that it will potentially consider a limited number of licensing opportunities.

Power efficiency for retail NEXCOM INTERNATIONAL Stand: 8-E190 The latest lineup of scalable appliances from Nexcom demonstrated at ISE include intelligent power saving and monitoring, eCharging and an IoT dashboard. Power and temperature management always gives retailers headaches but Nexcom’s solution could let them visualise the power consumption of each device. The NISE50, powered by an Intel BayTrail CPU, works as a gateway and collects data from different sensors. A"er analysing data, retailers could manage devices more efficiently. The eCharging Station Engine, NISE3800, is a fanless computer designed for applications which demand high CPU and graphics performances. The appliance supports up to 16GB DDR4 memory and has several options for storage devices, for instance, M.3, HDD, mSATA or SSD. Nexcom NISE3800 supports a wide range of DC inputs and can be operated in an extended operating temperature between -5 and 55°C.

Smart devices specialist BTicino is confirming its strategy in the IoT industry at ISE, having joined the new Works with Legrand interoperable platform for systems integration. A range of integrations are available for Eliot, the Legrand initiative dedicated to promoting the design and deployment of Legrand connected devices The MyHome_Up App allows the installer to set up the system just in few steps, while the end user can manage and customise functionality. The new Hometouch 7in touchscreen is able to control all MyHome_Up functions and can also be used as an internal video door entry unit. It can also be managed remotely via the dedicated Door Entry app for iOS and Android devices. In addition to the physical control through manual devices and the control with the App, it is also possible to use voice control, via Google Home and Amazon Alexa. A new in-wall smart switches and power outlets range allow users to remotely control lights, rolling shutters and home appliances from a phone or via voice control. No special wiring is required as all the devices are connected to the traditional electrical system.

This connects to customer’s different systems, for instance, ERP and CRM systems, POS system, digital signage and even power management systems to offer customer profile analysis, in-store hotspots, transaction analysis, popular goods analysis, power consumption analysis and much more.

ISE debut for green-minded manufacturer GREEN AUDIO MANUFACTURING Stand: 5-S45 Making its international debut at ISE is Green Audio Manufacturing. The brainchild of North American distributor Sound Developments, Green Audio says it has rethought the delivery of CI consumables, eliminating the hours spent unpacking products and disposing of waste. Instead, Green Audio delivers everyday products to integrators in bulk, reducing installation labour and keeping waste out of landfills. Dealers save time by accessing product more quickly and reduce their effort in disposal, the company believes, with 100% recyclable cardboard and paper as the only by-product of all Green Audio packaging. Barry Wosk, president, Green Audio Manufacturing, said: “A"er almost 25 years in the CI business I continue to be shocked by the waste our products create. Retail packaging doesn’t make sense for today’s integrated systems, yet we still force our dealers to spend time unpacking and disposing of completely unnecessary packaging.” Wosk says end users can also feel good knowing the production, transportation and disposal offers a reduced environmental footprint. At ISE, Green Audio is launching with a mix of architectural speakers, cables and HDMI

The new VVR Series from Leyard and Planar is being showcased at ISE. The company says this family of indoor and outdoor LED videowall displays is designed to meet the fast-paced needs of the rental and staging industry. The system features magnetically attachable cabinets for fast assembly, easy access to electronics for simple maintenance and a quick-lock system to support singleperson installation and handling. The VVR Series can be used to create videowalls for almost any indoor or outdoor application, says the company, including live events, signage and billboards, and can be hung, wall-mounted, floor-mounted or used as faceted videowalls. Joining the VVR Series at ISE are the company’s lightweight CarbonLight LED displays, which include a mesh design that delivers a highly transparent appearance with low wind resistance characteristics. Also on show are the VersaLight Series, which include an integrated mounting system that supports quick hanging and stacking rental and staging applications.

New dimensions in audio AXIS COMMUNICATIONS Stand: 9-B146 Axis audio systems can be used in school play areas

Network video specialist Axis is showing what it describes as “new dimensions to commercial audio” at ISE this year. The company’s audio solutions offer a range of possibilities within background music, public address and security applications. Axis says it offers complete solutions, with each individual speaker an advanced audio system – controlled, monitored and powered via Ethernet. The system offers logical instead of physical zoning and every speaker can be part of multiple zones. Users can remotely monitor each speaker including quality of audio output and can include advanced scheduling of audio content. Axis solutions are based on open standards for easy integration with other systems – from camera triggered audio announcements in individual speakers, to full SIP integration with VOIP telephony systems. Also on show are examples of Axis’s video solutions, which can detect intruders and people moving in the wrong direction, and respond immediately with an audio message or an alarm via the speaker.

Experience insane performance rendering NAVORI Stand: 8.E195 IPR, short for insane performance rendering, makes it possible to drive 8K video walls or four clusters of 4K digital signage displays from a single media player. It’s claimed as unique by Navori, resulting in “dramatic costsavings for systems integrators and end users”. It debuts here at ISE 2019. IPR’s ‘insane’ performance rendering capabilities are based on Navori’s 64-bit player so!ware and optimised PC hardware, and requires a licence to operate on Navori’s QL2 content management system so!ware. Jerome Moeri, CEO, Navori, said: “IPR is a breakthrough technology for delivering content resolution of this magnitude from a single PC. Systems integrators save on hardware, so!ware licensing and labour through a reduced installation footprint, and a technology that is simple to

configure and maintain compared to a filled server cabinet.” Moeri expects that IPR will be of particular interest to retail businesses and restaurants. For example, IPR’s high-performance rendering will offer benefits for quickservice restaurants and entertainment venues that want to drive multiple menu boards and concessions. In retail, video walls in shopping windows can have four tiled 4K screens – with brilliantly crisp visuals – running off a single IPR-driven player. The same benefits apply to video wall installations in corporate and hospitality environments. IPR adds further value by using only 20% of the CPU when displaying 8K content. What’s more, the company claims IPR can frame-accurately synchronise with any content type, including HTML5 and tickers, since the entire workflow is centralised on one workstation.

Speakers for diamond geezers KHARMA Stand: 14-B185

The massive Kharma EV2 speaker includes a spike disc suspension system

Luxury high-end audio brand Kharma’s first year at ISE sees the company showing integrated AV systems alongside high-end loudspeakers, matching electronics and cables, and bespoke home cinema. All the products and parts of the stand – such as flooring, ceiling, walls, lightning, AV furniture and accessories are designed and produced by Kharma in the Netherlands. Highlights for the show are the Enigma Veyron EV2 and the Elegance Visionair, connected with Enigma Veyron cables. Inside the EV2’s cabinet lies a triple array of 1in and 2in diamond tweeters, alongside the Kharma Omega-F 7in and 11in drivers. This motor is located in a completely carbon chassis, and powers an ultra-stiff and light

carbon cone. Even the voice coil former is made of carbon fibre. The job of isolating the massive EV2 from its environment is an important task: the design includes a spike disc suspension system sitting on a diamond surface. Minimal contact area is guaranteed through the extremely hard surfaces. While marketing & media director Vivienne van Oosterum acknowledged that there are other high-end loudspeaker brands, or amplifier brands, or furniture brands, or acoustical engineering companies, she claims “nobody integrates all fields in an approach for high-end audio like Kharma integrates them. “A thing of beauty is a joy forever,” she told the ISE Daily.

A range of 3D LED fans are on display on the Shenzhen Frida LCD stand this year. The fans create a holographic effect – an image floating in mid-air as four LED blades spin. Marketing director Arvin Li told the ISE Daily that the company can offer one-stop smart management platform solutions which make use of IoT technology. “Our products,” he said, “offer customers a value-added alternative to traditional LED screens.” The company’s hero product, F1, is 50cm in diameter, with app and website management available, so that the hologram display can be created or managed from anywhere in the world.

Clearer sound promised by new mic amp technology DPA Stand: 7-X250 Shenzhen-based company Coleder is among the first LED display developers to innovate with cable-free connection technology. The Coleder Ace Block series has a surface flatness that is less than 0.1mm, which, the company claims, “guarantees that the image displayed will not be distorted by roughness”. With the 3-6º curving design, Ace Block can be installed in any environment that needs a perfect curving display, claims Coleder. The company adds that there are no similar designs that could achieve similar curves in three different angles within a single cabinet – so that the display is able to form a 5m arc. Cable-free connection is claimed to greatly reduce failure points and keep the screens simple and neat, while front install and maintenance should help save space. 4K HDR 10 is supported, along with 16-bit greyscale, 25,000:1 contrast ratio, and an ultra-high refresh rate. Ace Block supports module-base curving displays, 90º corner displays, including for wrapping around pillars.

The 4000 series lavalier and headset microphones featuring Core by DPA amplifier technology are on the DPA stand. Core was developed to create an even clearer sound from the ‘highest of the highs’ to the ‘lowest of the lows’, claims the company. All Core miniature capsules offer expanded dynamic range and – as indicated by their IP58 certification – are durable and resistant to water and moisture, thanks to nano coating and hermetic sealing of their sensitive electronics. ISE 2019 also finds DPA showing microphone products from its d:sign group that are targeted at the installation and conference markets. The group includes functional yet unobtrusive table top, ceiling and floor stand microphones that are designed to ensure ‘outstanding’ sound even in acoustically challenging spaces while delivering high speech intelligibility and clarity of voice in any room or situation.

The so!ware makes large-scale construction projects more efficient, and is, according to the company, “focused around clients’ global standards”. The desk was developed by observing and interviewing expert interpreters and technicians across the world in order to discover their key needs. These included more languages, more installation and configuration flexibility in interpreting systems, and the best possible user experience. The desk’s ergonomic controls are designed to facilitate operation without looking at it, thus allowing interpreters to better observe the non-verbal communication of the speakers to help ensure the best possible interpretation. The Dicentis interpreter desk was also tested and optimised for visually impaired interpreters. The desk separates the incoming and outgoing languages in two vertically aligned columns supported by a highcontrast screen for quick comprehension and intuitive operation. Three assignable buttons provide the interpreter with short-key functions for quick access to supporting functions such as ‘video select’. The HDMI output enables an external video screen to be added, so the interpreter can see the participant speaking or the participant’s presentation.

Showcased on the AV EMEA stand, the Vail amp is said to easily turn any Amazon Echo Dot into an in-wall audio source; it simply becomes the user’s in-wall volume control keypad, voice control and streaming music source. The Echo Dot Generation 2 model is now in stock; the Gen 3 and a Google Home model will follow soon, the company says. The small, fully self-contained amplified assembly firmly holds the Dot in a wall dock that is said to allow for accurate voice intelligibility and convenient ‘light switch height’ access to the Dot’s surface controls. The Unite digital wireless communication system is the centrepiece of beyerdynamic’s stand at ISE. Unite is a communication system designed for a wide range of applications – from guided tours with tour guides, through voice transmission for speeches, to interpreter applications. It can also be used for silent PA, to provide support for people with reduced hearing or vision, or as a wireless intercom system. With its large operating range and long battery life, beyerdynamic claims that Unite provides flawless performance even in demanding circumstances. The four-channel access point Unite AP4 means Unite can be used in places where a fixed installation is needed. The analogue inputs and outputs are in Phoenix format. Unite AP4 also has a digital Dante interface that can provide power to the access point. Up to eight Unite AP4 access points can be synchronised for large systems, meaning up to 32 audio channels are available. The Unite system uses a digital audio processor to optimise speech intelligibility. The frequency response is adjusted so that speech transmission is always clear and intelligible, while a noise-cancelling function removes background noise, further enhancing speech intelligibility. Weighing 9.3kg and featuring single chip DLP, it uses pixel shi! technology to create 4K UHD resolution (3840 x 2160) and is designed for integration in small or awkward installation environments. The laser diode and yellow phosphor light source facilitates 24/7 usage and allows the LX-MH502Z to be used in any 360° orientation. Portrait projection is also possible to meet the needs of digital signage applications. With a 1.6x zoom and wide lens shi!, the LX-MH502Z is said to offer versatility in installation for a wide variety of applications: it is capable of a lens shi! of +/- 60% vertical and +/-23% horizontal, allowing the image to be adjusted with no need to tilt or reposition the projector. Loudspeaker range expanded with ‘ultra-compact’ model

Speaker is ‘world’s thinnest’ EOGO SOUND Stand: 5-X54 For any company looking to expand its market coverage into Europe and beyond, ISE is a must-attend show – and that’s what brings first time exhibitor Eogo Sound and its Eogo Invisible Speaker to Amsterdam. For the past 13 years, the company has focused its efforts on its native market, opening some 200 demonstration centres throughout China, but it is now looking to bring its capabilities to a wider audience. The Invisible Speaker, which the company claims to be the world’s thinnest at just 3.35cm, is designed to be completely concealed in the wall or ceiling. It is intended for both consumer applications such as home cinema or background music, or for professional applications in retail and restaurants. Eogo Sound describes the speaker as an ‘area sound source’ rather than a ‘point sound source’. These attributes benefit from what Eogo Sound calls Polymeric

L-ACOUSTICS Stand: 7-X230 Making its debut at ISE 2019, X4i is an ‘ultra-compact’ coaxial loudspeaker for installation applications. X4i is the smallest loudspeaker the company has ever manufactured; L-Acoustics says it offers the company’s ‘sonic signature’ in a 4in enclosure. With a depth of less than 10cm and weight of less than 1kg, the company says the X4i offers ease of integration into conventional construction structures. X4i can be deployed in fill applications, complementing main L-Acoustics systems such as ARCS and Kiva in performing arts centres. Other uses include in-wall fill, stage lip-fill, rails, stair risers and under-balcony fills, among others. The enclosure can also provide vocal reinforcement in settings such as conference rooms, museums and exhibits, and hospitality venues. Combined with Syva Sub, X4i can provide a solution for indoor or outdoor background music in restaurants, bars, hotels and retail locations. The weather-resistant loudspeaker possesses an IP55 rating and becomes watertight with a rear sealing plate, facilitating integration in challenging climatic or outdoor environments. Developed for flexibility of use, X4i is complemented by a range of mounting accessories. It can be experienced in demo room E103.

JINWEI Stand: 5-V127 The TU-2000 is the latest in Jinwei’s Ultimate Series of high-end audio cables. The concept is built on three technologies: Jinwei’s patented TFC (twisted flat conductors); air built-in isolation; and DM-PETM (demagnetising polyethylene) dielectric. The goal is to produce the ‘ultimate pure clean sound performance’. TFC is a new technology that uses a solid flat conductor that has a greater surface area than a conventional round conductor, allowing it to carry substantially more current. Jinwei’s layering and twisting procedure is said to maximise sound performance and minimise electrical interference. Jinwei notes that air is an ideal dielectric, an excellent isolator providing an extremely clean signal path. As the company points out, however, it is almost impossible to keep the conductor in the air without any support. Jinwei has utilised its layering and twisting technology to give the conductor a stable central position, with nearly 90% of the conductor in contact with air only. This is said to provide both an even distribution and a smooth, natural presentation. DM-PETM is described as a combination of demagnetising materials, effectively reducing electromagnetic interference and radio frequency interference. Flat solid conductors of high-purity silverplated free copper are used in six 14AWG (2sqmm) cores, aggregated into two 9AWG (6sqmm) cables.

The 17.3in display can even be used as a tablet, in a comfortable operating position and at any angle for the best view. Available for download from the Stardraw.com website, SD7.3 boasts a ra" of new features based on user requests and feedback, as well as multiple performance enhancements. One of the most significant is new 64-bit architecture. The company claims this is able to manage huge and multiple imported DWG files ‘better than ever before’, as well as other resource-intensive non-native data formats including PDF, DXF and image files (PNG, JPG and so on). Another enhancement is the new Feathering feature, sometimes called ‘Continuations’ or ‘Fly-offs’. This provides a graphical representation to indicate where a cable has come from – and is going to – in the event that

it spans separate drawings or is noncontiguous in the same drawing. It consolidates the two cable objects into one ‘physical’ cable in the Cable Schedule to ensure that they aren’t double-counted in the project. Stardraw Design 7.3 also adds the ability to import from an Excel spreadsheet, allowing users to add products into a project directly from a spreadsheet. They may also export an equipment list into Excel and populate the products it contains with attribute values, for example IP addresses of products a"er commissioning in the field. The list can then be imported back into Stardraw to update the project file with these new attributes. The new detachable HDMI 2.0 connector is designed for installation in narrow and curved spaces and comes with a small HDMI type D-head. Various types of detachable connectors – including HDMI type A, DisplayPort, DVI and HDMI type A with equaliser – can be used with the product, which is able to transmit 4K60Hz (4:4:4) UHD images up to 100m. FiberSmith is also demonstrating SAVE, an on-site termination solution that enables it to upgrade, reuse or make active optical cables on site.

Estreemo is launching a range of audio and video devices at ISE

Italian developer Empirya is presenting its spin off Estreemo at ISE this year. Estreemo is launching with a new series of audio and video hardware devices which it says will “revolutionise the shooting, directing and streaming video market sectors”. The company’s Director Pro products are hardware devices for live production but are not limited to acquiring and streaming. The company claims they enable the customer to minimise costs related to the different phases of directing, editing, post-production and video publishing, and can interface with third-party external systems such as audio-conferencing systems, home automation devices or Cloud APIs. Director Pro devices can capture video and audio (over IP or via physical interfaces) based on real-time events acquired from the scene and using configurable policies. They can also perform audio/video direction, control display and devices in the meeting room, or stream directly to YouTube or Facebook Live.

Vsblty Vector, for example, detects one or more human faces in an image along with face attributes which contain machine learning-based predictions of facial features. The face attribute features are: age, gender, pose, smile and facial hair. The company said that its facial recognition can calculate 27 ‘landmarks’ for each face in an image and even recognise partial views of faces. It will return a confidence score about how likely it is that the two faces belong to one person and can search national and regional detection databases to identify known persons of interest for public safety.

The new generation of Class D Loop Drivers aims to ease integration of induction loop technology

Responding in particular to the needs of hearing-impaired and deaf people in noisy environments, Humantechnik is introducing a new generation of Class D Loop Driver induction loop technology, Audioropa, at ISE 2019. The amplifiers – which provide inductive audio signals through a wire loop laid out in the room – are compatible with PA systems of all sorts. Users of hearing aids and cochlea-implants can switch their devices to direct inductive reception and thereby avoid acoustic interference completely. The new technology is likely to resonate with operators and suppliers of PA systems for events, traffic applications and cultural centres, who will be aware that they are o"en able to reach only 90% of their audience with current systems. High performance audio technology combined with comprehensive service is one of the claims made on behalf of the Audioropa solutions portfolio.

The Rail way to combined audio and lighting K-ARRAY Stand: 7-X223, 7-Y195 K-array has combined its audio capabilities with high-end lighting technology in the form of the Rail, a 1.2m line of warm, homogeneous linear LED lights with full-range cone drivers. To adapt to a variety of needs, the line comes with a host of combinations to cover a wide range of applications. The Rail line provides a selection of different direct light distribution: Symmetric, to spread the light equally in all directions; Asymmetrical, where the light is directed sideways to one side of the vertical plane; Mini Spot, which creates a fixed spotlight; and Electrified Track, where magnetic spotlights are adjustable to point in the desired direction. The Intevi IDT Range is a hardware and so"ware solution for the delivery of digital video streams and managed content over an IP network to TV displays and PCs. The modular head end supports both terrestrial and satellite feeds with support for DVB T/T2/S/S2/C/QAM and ATSC. Encoded feeds such as satellite decoders, cameras or DVD players in SD or full HD can also be handled by the system. The multi-user web-based central management system allows for control and, through the portal, users can configure and manage all the hardware through a single interface. Templates can be applied to brand the TV channels and the messages or alerts can be sent to individual groups or all screens. The company – a video conferencing and collaboration provider – has announced the upcoming release of TrueConf Room, a so"ware-based conference room solution that provides integrated 4K video conferencing experiences for corporate meeting rooms. Another show highlight is TrueConf Kiosk, a clickto-call solution for self-service systems which has been recently released as an open source application for video kiosks. Visitors to TrueConf’s stand can also witness the latest TrueConf Server features. Virtual reality: look beyond the goggles ISE is an ideal opportunity to scope out the latest in new virtual reality applications, and how they can be of benefit to your business. Steve Montgomery explores the new reality of VR for AV companies Virtual reality applications are receiving a lot of attention at the moment and the technology looks like it is here to stay. The majority of applications rely on head-mounted goggles or smartphones and are primarily aimed at consumers. Futuresource forecasts high sales of personal VR devices this year. “2019 will see global head-mounted display sales hit 72 million units of which mobile and head-mounted units will represent 88%,” said Carl Hibbert. As with other mainstream consumer products, there is a spin-off into the pro-AV market that opens up new opportunities for system designers, integrators and content creators. Virtual reality applications using goggles are starting to appear in retail, museums and other AV sectors. Exciting new VR applications are appearing that are not constricted to enclosed head-mounted displays. Virtual reality applications can be considered to be any situation that attempts to simulate a real or fantasy world to a viewer; no matter how it is presented. This can be a large LCD wall, bank of video screens, curved projection surface or an allencompassing CAVE facility. Some of the latest collaboration and conferencing systems are picking up on this idea: by placing images of remote attendees at the end of a conference table so that they appear to be present in the same meeting. Others allow distant users to interact on a touchscreen in an office thousands of miles away as though they were standing alongside local users. As audiovisual professionals searching for business, we should be looking further afield; to address market sectors beyond our normal sphere of activity. For example, the oil and construction industries and

This means that screens can be pushed together without a visible gap between them. It relieves eyestrain and prevents disturbing distractions, states the firm. Additionally, the arms offer the ability to mount monitors flat with a small distance to the edge of a table, without hitting partition walls or interfering with heightadjustable tables. The result is plenty of space on the desk with a perfect monitor configuration, claims the company. Novus is also demonstrating how to optimise the use of existing space with what it describes as practical solutions that turn the office into a convenient and comfortable place to work in.

the military use projected virtual reality systems to train staff in situations that are difficult to simulate physically, or do not yet exist. These are o#en formed from extensive multi-projector installations in dedicated buildings. In the broadcast industry, many studio sets are virtual creations, existing only within the computers that generate the graphics and the minds of the creatives producing them. ITV’s ‘Cathedral of Football’ studio in Red Square was largely created by moveable backdrop LED panels to ‘transport’ pundits instantly from central Moscow to football stadiums around the country and back again. Virtual images on the screens change in response to camera movements to create a realistic three-dimensional transmission. The world’s largest automotive manufacturers are switching away from expensive life-size clay models of concept cars, preferring to share and alter new car designs on massive, narrow-pitch LED walls; collaboratively and in real time. The air traffic industry is transforming operations through the use of remote towers. Controllers watch live images from unmanned airports hundreds of kilometres away on 360o displays and speak to pilots to guide them into the skies. Many of the companies that create hardware, so#ware and applications for these uses operate outside the core AV sector and won’t be exhibiting at ISE. Several are multinational organisations, but many are small, niche and highly creative start-ups. There will be many commercial opportunities open to professional AV practitioners who seek them out. Others will be present. These include companies such as Holovis with projection CAVEs; Christie who

build massive flight simulators for Boeing; 7th Sense and Green Hippo who make the powerful media servers needed for real-time visualisation; Viscon immersive projection systems; and Immersive Studio for VR content. It is well worth taking time at the show to search them out, talk through the possibilities and win new business in virtual reality applications; not just beyond the goggles, but beyond our normal sphere of activity.

Affordable preamp/DAC enjoys ISE debut PARASOUND Stand: 1-Q115 Making its ISE debut is the New Classic 200 preamp/DAC from Parasound. It represents, according to the company, a new generation of affordable, high performance audio – a market sector on which Parasound has focused for the past 35 years. We will start with defining ‘experience’ in the AV context. Then we will take a look at how to map the experiential requirements of a project so that all stakeholders can align to the nuances and opportunities. Experiences can be mapped against pairs of qualitative descriptions, such as emotive/informative, that help establish clear technical, operational, creative and business requirements. This improves stakeholder understanding, consensus and elevates the AV conversation. In the end, we will find that experientially focused design is about stakeholder education and navigating our own technical biases. This session will define ‘experience’ inclusively and functionally; establish how experience fits into the AV value proposition; identify key qualitative axes to which experiences can be mapped; and explore how to turn that experience map into stakeholder impact.

AI for AV: an outlook

Computers are now able to recognise and respond to just about any natural language, guess at what movies and songs we’d like, and even drive our cars. So what does this have to do with the AV industry? Well, plenty. AV, by definition, provides the visual and auditory experience in the workplace, commercial venues, education and even our homes. In short, AV builds the user-interface to our environments and that user-interface will be heavily influenced by AI. The influence of AI on AV is already

apparent. Intelligent virtual assistants are already showing up in conference rooms supporting room-booking and analytics, and becoming important features of large-scale AV deployments. We’ll outline these use cases and provide a short tutorial that covers the basics of machine-learning technologies and how they can be used to improve AV control systems. Finally, we’ll detail real-world use cases where predictive analytics were made possible. Speakers target high-performance media rooms

At ISE 2019, TOA Electronics Europe is exhibiting a host of integrated solutions geared towards the needs of building security and communications applications. These include voice alarm systems that align to EN54 European standards. TOA highlights its ability to provide a comprehensive range of audio and voice alarm solutions, accommodating the needs of everything from restaurants and retail outlets to large complexes such as industrial plants and airports. Specific solutions on display at ISE include the EN54certified voice alarm system, VX-3000, which now benefits from updated firmware and can be combined with the new compact version of the VX-3000, the VX-3308WM, which can be mounted on a wall. The digital signage and brand experience company is demonstrating a solution for showrooms where actions can trigger sound, video or product-specific merchandising. Videro’s so"ware suite enables user apps that can post photos, videos and web content onto the walls and fixtures of a room. It can then encourage visitors to interact with that content by tapping a table, or placing an item on a shelf, or pulling open a drawer. The company explains that first users pick a display, from wall-to-wall video tiles, LED shelf tags, touch tables, magic mirrors, projection-lit furnishings or AV show controls. Plug in the Videro MediaPlayer to any standard hardware and it is ready to playback all audio, video, web and interactive content on the chosen display. Users can design, arrange and schedule content in Videro Composer, track which content is on which display, and verify that the right campaign is running on the right screen.

AMD turbo boosts display AOPEN Stand: 8-C255 The demand for digital signage solutions has increased drastically with the rapid adoption of 4K panels and similar rich content and new technologies. That’s the background to a recent technical alliance with AMD to embed its Ryzen processors in Aopen’s digital signage solutions. The DE6340 is the first Aopen digital signage player to introduce AMD Ryzen Embedded processors with four 4K outputs and HDR support for power-efficient solutions. As the successor of the DE6140, this new player aims for four-panel video walls and UHD menu boards. Stan Tsui, head of the channel and customer division at Aopen, said: “Thanks to a strong headway in visual applications we are able to offer a more customerfocused product range with new technologies, such as the powerful Ryzen processors and Radeon graphics with Eyefinity technology, for maximum flexibility for our customers.” The DE6340 features AiCU, which is said to reduce legacy costs associated with management and maintenance. The company claims it delivers future-proof flexibility and scalability in digital signage, corporate, education and mission-critical visualisation applications. The so#ware allows the display of high-quality content from multiple sources across multi-screen display walls ‘in any configuration’, claims Black Box. The platform’s video engine supports 4K 60fps video up to a resolution of more than one billion pixels, thus helping to future-proof it for 8K resolutions. Black Box is also showcasing its solutions for system and room control, HDMI-over-IP distribution and display, and meeting room booking and management.

Dynamic data visualisation VENTUZ TECHNOLOGY Stand: 8-K330 The abundance of data at our disposal is posing new challenges for graphic visualisation concepts in presentations, events and permanent installations. Ventuz Technology, developer of 3D real-time motion graphics solutions, has chosen ISE 2019 to showcase its newest toolsets of smart and dynamic visualisation workflows for live data. GEO M product family completed with M12 NEXO Stand: 3-C112

A cluster of three Nexo GEO M12 line arrays

The GEO M12 line array from Nexo gets its first European outing at ISE 2019 and completes the company’s GEO M range of sound reinforcement systems. Denis Baudier, sales director at Nexo, said: “The ‘Big Twelve’ is a logical complement to our M Series range. It is packed with design features that we premiered on the GEO M10 and also benefits from patented technological and structural innovations that derive from our flagship STM Series modular line array.” The GEO M12 is almost twice as powerful as Nexo’s earlier 12in line array cabinet, the GEO S12, but it offers 3dB more in passive and 6dB more in active mode. The M12 line array module, which contains a premium 12in neodymium LF driver paired with a 1.4in titanium diaphragm HF driver, is offered with two vertical dispersions, the 10° GEO M1210 and the 20° GEO M1220. Horizontal directivity is 80° by default for both modules, but by adding an optional Configurable Directivity Device (the Nexo-patented CDD) it can be changed in seconds to 120°, using a magnetic fixing system. Although the GEO M12 is partnered by the dedicated MSUB18 sub-bass cabinet it shares the same phase response as other Nexo speakers, so it can be teamed with any Nexo sub without requiring complex adjustment. As with any Nexo product, amplification is via Nexo’s NXAMP4x4 TDcontroller, running with up to three M12 cabinets per channel. The system can be controlled over a network using a Dante, Ethersound or AES/EBU digital expansion card.

Big sound, small size AUDIO INNOVATIONS Stand: 14-C187 Big in sound, small in size, the new AI-120 and AI-100 loudspeakers from Audio Innovations are presented on its stand this year. Chris de Gier, co-owner of Audio Innovations, said: “Speakers can beautiful, yet at the same time are a difficult topic because the better they sound, the bigger they usually are. With our new loudspeakers, this dilemma comes to an end.” According to de Gier, the Audio Innovations speakers have a sound that is “balanced and dynamic, almost completely independently of the listening position”. This makes them useful not only for office environments, such as boardrooms or meeting rooms, but also for home audio – anywhere from 2.1 to 7.1 solutions. “Whether you are right in front of the loudspeaker or a few metres away, the noise level varies considerably less than with conventional speakers,” continued de Gier. “This also affects the spatial sense, because the typical stereo triangle with the ‘sweet spot’ – the best listening location – is missing.” The new AI-120 and AI-100 loudspeakers are fit for corporate or residential use

Interference-free, flexible sound CONTACTA Stand: 3-C104 The latest infrared and radio frequency wireless assistive listening technologies are being demoed in Hall 3 by Contacta. The systems utilise infrared and radio frequency to provide clear sound to those who require it, allowing the transmission of individual sound sources to multiple receivers. Contacta says its infrared (IR) systems are designed for when confidentiality is key or multiple transmission signals are in proximity. They send interference-free sound wirelessly in line of sight to users’ provided receivers. The company claims its radio frequency (RF) systems are useful for guided group

tours, simultaneous interpretation or other group communication situations. They allow transmission through walls or ceilings and provide flexibility in both range and group size. Both systems can be equipped with a variety of listening options, including earphones and inductive neck loops for hearing aids. There are also flexible microphone options to suit indoor or outdoor environments. The wireless systems allow buildings and environments to be more accessible for those with hearing loss, providing the inclusivity many need to engage and communicate freely.

A bell with an IP brain DOORBIRD Stand: 9-B147 Berlin-based Bird Home Automation Group is showing its latest D2101KV IP video door intercom at ISE. The new model is equipped with one call button and a multifunctional keypad which makes it ideal for single-family homes, hotels and commercial spaces that require a safe and efficient access control solution. The D2101KV IP is the first DoorBird product that combines a doorbell with an integrated keypad. The backlit call button operates as a doorbell or an automatic door opener within individually set time windows. The system provides visitor history, and push notifications to a smart device or IP phone are available. In addition, PIN codes, scheduling and permissions for the integrated keypad can be managed in the DoorBird app. The user can generate and assign PIN codes from anywhere in the world to grant access to the premises to visitors or service providers. The integrated keypad can also send HTTP requests to home automation systems to trigger events, such as arming a burglar alarm or controlling motorised window shutters. The AudioPoint 3.0 audio-to-mobile platform can stream to as many as 250 simultaneous mobile listeners with the lowest possible latency, claims Barix. The solution combines new hardware with free iOS and Android apps, to stream audio to smartphones and mobile devices over local WiFi in sync with associated digital displays. Reducing the solution’s latency to tighten lip sync even further, the latest version amplifies AudioPoint’s benefits for enhancing digital signage while enabling new live translation. This makes it useful for presentation support use cases in corporate and educational settings. It can also serve

as a direct-to-listener personal audio delivery system for volume-sensitive environments such as hotel lobbies or noisy locations such as live performance venues and sports bars. Live streams are enabled when consumers connect their mobile devices to a WiFi access point on the same network as the AudioPoint 3.0 encoder hardware unit and the Barix Audio Signage app – available in app stores or via a QR code displayed on site. Consumers can select between available audio channels in the app, letting them choose between languages or switch to the soundtrack of another nearby local display screen.

The all-in-one workhorse incorporates a wide lens which facilitates large mid-air effects, while the 471W Osram light source provides a bright and punchy beam that can be zoomed from 2° to 42°. Colours can be mixed smoothly by using the CMY wheels, although a fixed colour wheel is also available. Effects include a fixed and rotating gobo wheel, both equipped with auto-focus when zooming. In addition, two prism wheels and an animation wheel are also part of the feature package, and two linear frosts can be combined for maximum flexibility. The unit delivers 4K image quality, with scaling and format conversion provided on each of the V-600UHD’s inputs. The V-600UHD employs HDR technology to preserve the details in the darkest and brightest areas of an image. Making an Impact on the PA/VA market 4EVAC Stand: 7-T194

Voice alarm (VA) and public address (PA) expert 4EVAC is showcasing its new Impact system at ISE 2019. Previewed at last year’s ISE, Impact has already made an impression as the latest addition to 4EVAC’s range of modular systems, which include the Compact 500 and LoopDrive. Impact incorporates 4EVAC’s signatory modular control and monitoring products that deliver secure communications to wide areas. A key feature is their redundancy, which enables evacuation instructions and general announcements to be broadcast even if the carrier network becomes damaged or faulty. The Impact concept takes existing 4EVAC products, including the DCA-2.500 amplifier and 4EVAC Manager programming application, and integrates them with a new Controller to create what the company says is a powerful compact system. Impact is able to distribute messages over multiple loudspeaker lines to more zones using fewer amplifiers. The DCA-2.500 amplifier itself sits in a 2U, 19in rack. Providing a transformer isolated for 100V and 50V outputs, the amp can also be bridged into a total output of 1000W. The DCA-2.500 is a D-Class unit and conforms to the EN54-16 and EN54-4 standards.

Spatial sound processor makes ISE debut AMADEUS Stand: 5-W88 Making its ISE debut is the Holophonix spatial sound processor from first-time exhibitor Amadeus. Designed for live sound spatialisation and immersive audio experiences, the Holophonix processor brings together several different techniques including wave field synthesis, high-order ambisonics, distance-based amplitude panning and more, enabling intuitive placement and movement of sources in a 2D and/or 3D space. “Development of the Holophonix system is undoubtedly the most ambitious and the most exciting project we have initiated for a very long time,” said Michel Deluc, R&D manager, Amadeus. The Holophonix processor is housed in a 3U height chassis, machined from aluminium and anodised. Its front panel is machined in three dimensions from an aluminium block, with its style drawn from the aesthetic and technical aspects of Amadeus’ audiophile hi-fi product development. The hardware is described as fully redundant, comprising dual redundant power supply units and solid-state drives for complete reliability. Holophonix is Dante-compatible and can integrate with standard commercial DAW so"ware as well as Dante-enabled devices, providing an added control layer.

Bringing live streaming to life ROLAND Stand: 3-B145

The Roland VR-1HD streaming mixer for multi-camera broadcasting

The Roland VR-1HD – a mixer that’s designed to help bring live streaming videos to life – was unveiled in January 2019 and is being showcased at ISE 2019. Users can connect, switch and stream cameras, presentations, game play, smartphones and tablets with VR-1HD’s HDMI inputs. Each of the three inputs of the VR1HD accepts HD and computer video resolutions.

Embedded audio can be mixed with line inputs and two XLR microphone inputs. The mixer allows users to go hands-free and headset-free while live streaming with a top mounted mic input, so creators can use a gooseneck microphone and operate the VR-1HD with dedicated controls. VR-1HD’s video editing so"ware provides Scene Switching functionality, allowing users to instantly switch between ‘scenes’ with smooth transitions for a professional finish. The mixer lets creators preset up to five scenes that they can later use while live streaming videos and performances. The VR-1HD has three auto switching technologies, including Video Follows Audio, which provides users with the capability to switch cameras based on who is speaking into the microphone. If both participants speak, or remain silent at once, the VR-1HD can switch to a wide shot capturing both performers. The two other auto switching options are Beat Sync Switching, which listens to the tempo of a performance and automatically selects which camera inputs to switch between, and Auto Scan, which gives users the ability to pre-set a specific time for switching between sources.
