Amina is about to start HND Web Development and Digital Design at the Motherwell Campus. She was inspired to get involved in the Students’ Association through her sister, Minahil (Mona), who was actively involved last year.

Amina is particularly interested in improving mental health, promoting clubs and extracurricular activities, and she has already created a ‘One College Many Cultures’ campaign to celebrate the ethnic diversity of students at the College.

Dominika was the VP for Coatbridge Campus last year – and will combine her studies in HND Accounting with representing the students of Cumbernauld, Kirkintilloch and Broadwood this year. Her priorities include promoting healthy food options and fitness initiatives as well as creating a language learning group for students to learn more about different cultures.

She would like to raise awareness of mental health support and the work of suicide prevention charities.

Lisa returned to education in January of this year as a mature student, studying NQ Introduction to Mental Health and Counselling.

She became a course rep and got involved with the Students’ Association to find out more about the College and share her knowledge with her peers.

Her goal is to help create a fun, wellinformed and supportive environment for students.

JAMES MCCAIG – HND ART & DESIGN I feel that my design fits with equality and diversity because it shows the comfort and safety that the campuses give to their students, helping them along as they find their way as an individual and for their future careers. As for the bird itself, I have chosen to make it a swallow and for good reason; they live in communities where neighbouring swallows take care of others’ young, it represents the lecturers of the College and how they support the students from each campus. I made the feathers into ribbons, showing the unique qualities and differences of each student across all campuses and showing that their paths go in all different ways as they grow and learn.

PRINCIPAL New College Lanarkshire have now appointed a new Principal & Chief Executive who will be joining the college this coming November.

Professor Christopher Moore will take over from the outgoing Martin McGuire who is leaving to join WorldSkills UK.

STUDENT LOGO COMPETITION

Professor Christopher Moore has lived in Lanarkshire for most of his life and joins from York St John University where he was Deputy Vice Chancellor.

Professor Moore brings 18 years of academic leadership experience to the college and said: “New College Lanarkshire raises aspirations and creates opportunities through the transformative power of education.

“I very much look forward to working with colleagues and external partners to further advance the positive impact of the college in the future.”

This is a hugely exciting period for New College Lanarkshire and we look forward to welcoming our new Principal in November!

New College Lanarkshire has unveiled the winning design for its Equality & Diversity logo – which has been created by art student James McCaig. James currently studies HND Art and Design at our Kirkintilloch Campus.

A storyboard outlining the transition from initial concept to the final design has been produced and will go on display at all six campuses across Lanarkshire and East Dunbartonshire.

James decided to create a swallow design for the logo, as they live in communities and he wanted the bird image to reflect the support that lectures provide to students.

James, whose career goal is to become an art teacher, said:

“This is actually the first competition that I was willing to enter – I spent many years doubting myself to the point where I missed out on a lot of things.” “ The more I developed the bird design, the more it became meaningful, and I wanted something that fitted in with my experience. I’m really happy with the design and its journey – I knew from looking at the original that it would need to be changed, so I let it change in order to see what needed to be done”.

LATEST NEWS SECTION Photography students capture Hospice’s 2020 vision in calendar competition Talented Photography students from New College Lanarkshire are once again using their skills to help raise money for St Andrew’s Hospice! The College’s Photography team has teamed up with the Airdrie hospice for a second year to host a competition for students to have their images feature in its annual calendar.

Hair Salon Shortlisted in Dementia Awards

New College Lanarkshire students are celebrating after a project to create a hair salon at University Hospital Wishaw has been nominated for an award at Scotland’s Dementia Awards 2019.

The salon, ‘Styles & Smiles’ offers long-stay patients free hair styling and barbering services. Since April, more than 300 treatments have already been carried out

by Commercial Hairdressing and Barbering & Male Grooming students from our Motherwell Campus.

The salon was opened earlier this year by former Motherwell footballer & Scotland international James McFadden.

There were more than 160 entries submitted for this year’s competition, which was based on the theme of family. A judging panel selected the top 12 images, and chose Coatbridge Campus student Kerri Beck’s photograph ‘Family Ties’ as the overall winner.

If you would like to support the Hospice and the students involved, you can purchase the calendar from October for just £5.

World Skills Kazan 2019 Former New College Lanarkshire Ross Megahy will be flying the flag for Scotland at WorldSkills 2019!

The global trade skills event is taking place in Kazan, Russia, and Ross who studied Computer Aided Draughting and Design (CADD) is no stranger to competition having won gold at the UK finals in Birmingham in 2016 before winning a bronze medal at EuroSkills Budapest in September 2018.

After completing his HNC & HND studies at New College Lanarkshire, Ross moved onto Product Design Innovation at the University of Strathclyde where he graduated earlier this year.

All of us at New College Lanarkshire would like to wish Ross and the UK team the best of luck in Kazan!

Did you know that the Scottish Government has committed to providing access to free sanitary products for students in schools, colleges and universities to support equality, dignity and rights for those who menstruate and to ensure that lack of access to products does not impact on an individual’s ability to fully participate in education at all levels.

New College Lanarkshire have provided sanitary towels and tampons, and from August 2019 will have Mooncups. Mooncups are reusable and reduce waste compared to other sanitary products, which will help the College and students to be more sustainable.

Halls of Residence Motherwell Campus ACCOMMODATION GUIDE 2019/20 Located next to our Motherwell Campus, we have a 49 room halls of residence that is available for students to rent. The residence has security entry and is staffed 24 hours a day.

On each of the six floors there’s a fully fitted kitchen. We also have a dedicated laundry room with washing, drying & ironing facilities as well as a communal lounge where you can chill out with friends.

For disabled students, there are two bedrooms and a kitchen which have been specially adapted for wheelchair users on the ground floor.
