As a new member of the Learner Engagement Team, my aim is to encourage an environment within the College which is equal and welcoming for all regardless of; age, disability, sex, sexual orientation, gender reassignment, marriage/civil partnership, pregnancy or maternity, race, religion or belief. In an effort to achieve this I will be promoting and celebrating diversity on specific dates in the academic calendar which I hope students would like to be involved in.

Being part of NCL is an exciting move for me and I am fully committed to developing this pivotal role. I will be based at Coatbridge Campus, in the Learner Engagement office. ‘Market Day’ shortlisted for learner engagement award An entrepreneurial project for students of New College Lanarkshire has been shortlisted for a prestigious engagement award.

The College’s ‘Market Day’ initiative has been shortlisted in the annual Student Partnerships in Quality Scotland (sparqs) Student Engagement Awards in the Shaping the Curriculum category.

The ‘Market Day’ project was created by the College’s Learner Engagement Team as part of their ‘Be Engaged’ initiative - which was recognised in last year’s sparqs awards - encouraging students to get involved in various extracurricular activities to develop their skillset outside the classroom.

Market Day allows students with entrepreneurial flair to utilise on-campus market stalls to sell

products or services – from bake sales to hair-cuts – utilising their skills learned in the classroom and putting them into practice in a real life situation. Students are able to access funding to help get with resources for their business idea including stock, equipment and marketing.

The project also considers the business development process for each participant and students are mentored from partners at Bridge 2 Business to help get their business started.

John O’Hara, Senior Learner Engagement Officer, said: “The Market Day initiative has been a huge success, with over 30 students using it to develop their confidence, interpersonal and customer service skills. We continue to receive applications from interested students to take part in the coming months.

“We have been so impressed with the level of professionalism and creativity shown by students who have hired the stalls and have had fantastic feedback from lecturers, fellow students and the budding entrepreneurs themselves.

“One of only four colleges shortlisted and the only one in our category is a fantastic accolade and I am very proud of the work the Learner Engagement Team and the students involved have achieved.”

The only further education institute in the category, the College will go head to head with Abertay University and Glasgow Caledonian University Students’ Association at an awards ceremony on Thursday 28th March in Surgeons’ Hall in Edinburgh.

PRINCIPAL POPS IN TO POP-UP BARBER STALL The Principal has experienced a cut of the success of the College’s Market Day initiative, which has just been shortlisted for a prestigious student engagement award.

Aiming to give students with entrepreneurial flair the resources, opportunity and skills to run their own business, the Market Day initiative has afforded a number of student-led pop-up shops to appear across the campuses.

Principal Martin McGuire recently visited the Barbering Pop-up in the Coatbridge Campus, one of the initiative’s successful enterprises.

NQ Level 5 Barbering and Male Grooming student, Marc Musardo, took to giving him a hair-cut under the watchful eye of Curriculum and Quality Leader, Neil McMullen.

Martin said: “I was extremely impressed by the professionalism and skills of Marc and his fellow students who run the pop-up, which was a real testament to their training and the hard work of Neil and his staff.

“The Market Day initiative has been a great success that is set to continue and I would encourage all staff to get involved in supporting the projects which are providing great life skills for our students.”

Supported Learning students raised £237 for SAMH

Kind-hearted students have raised over £230 for a mental health charity after hosting a bake sale and sponsored silence.

Students from the Faculty of Supported Learning, who take part in a volunteering class on a Friday afternoon raised £237.15 for the Scottish Association of Mental Health – raising vital funds to provide a range of mental health support and services.

They handed over the cheque to David Tough, Community Link Worker and SAMH and Eileen Quinn, Service Manager.

The pair explained to the students that their kind donation will go towards the My Recovery Action Plan (MYRAP) which is a recovery tool SAMH peer workers use when working with individuals to better their mental health.

The group’s lecturer, Michelle McMillan, said: “The students worked hard in organising both the bake sale and the sponsored silence which were a great success.

“We were all thrilled with the amount of money raised for such a fantastic charity which works hard in our local area.

“Well done to all the students involved!”

Documenting the life of a Syrian student Film crews were on campus last week to document the life of an extraordinary student, Heba.

The 19-year-old Social Sciences student started at the College after fleeing Syria with her family in 2013 when Bashar Assad’s forces targeted schools.

Now she features in a documentary about a project helping Syrian refugees living in Glasgow with integration and empowerment through storytelling and theatre.

Organised by the Trojan Women Project, the documentary showed the development of a play, The Trojans, written and performed by a cast of Syrian refugees which was shown at the Platform Theatre on Friday 8thFebruary and Saturday 9th February.

The play is the culmination of nine months of drama workshops in Glasgow’s Platform Theatre, aiming to build links between Syrians newly arrived in Scotland and local communities; to allow Syrians who have found a haven in Scotland to work through

their depression, isolation and trauma. The stunning new piece of theatre will bring home to the audience the reality of what it means to flee war, and arrive in a strange land.

In an interview with the Sunday Post, Heba, who hopes to be a Clinical Psychologist after her time at the College, said: “The people I have met through the play I think of as my wider Syrian family now.

“When you speak your suffering for the first time, you cry. But when you say it twice, three times, you control your feelings.

For three months I don’t think about Syria. This has been very positive for me.”

Heba reflected on her time in Syria, saying: “It was very bad, the village I lived in was very dangerous, the arm started shooting in our schools, the people who were supposed to protect us. My dad has been taken to prison in Syria but he got to Jordan and we went to meet him there.

“When they started shooting at the school we his at my teacher’s house.

“I don’t always tell people these things here, I worry about their feelings. Not everyone has the flexibility to listen to these stories and I don’t want to make people sad.”

PERFORMING ARTS STUDENTS IMPRESS AT ANNUAL INDUSTRY SHOWCASE

Performing Arts students have demonstrated their talents to agents and entertainment industry professionals at an invite-only showcase event.

BA Acting and BA Musical Theatre students wowed audiences over four performances at the Scottish Youth Theatre headquarters in Glasgow’s Merchant City.

The annual showcase allows industry professionals the chance to meet new and emerging Scottish talent.

The showcase also marked the first year of Queen Margaret University validating the College’s highly respected degree programmes in the Performing Arts.

Sixteen BA Musical Theatre students opened their two 70-minute performances with Raise the Roof from The Wild Party and closed with Over & Done With from the Proclaimers’ musical, Sunshine on Leith.

A further 16 BA Acting students also performed two 70-minute showcases at the event, and these included extracts from Liz Lochhead’s Mary Queen of Scots Got Her Head Chopped Off, David Mamet’s Oleanna and Red Peppers

Following the performances, students had a chance to chat with the invited guests over refreshments.

Gregor Duncan, Curriculum and Quality Leader for Performing Arts, said: “Since starting the BA Performing Arts courses at New College Lanarkshire, the standard and talent of the students has grown every year.

“This year we are delighted that our courses have been validated

by Queen Margaret University and are looking forward to building our partnership with them over the coming years.

“The dedication of the staff and the commitment of the students is evident from the quality of work being performed.”

Dr David Stevenson, Head of Media, Communication and Performing Arts at Queen Margaret University, added: “We have a long and proud history of delivering degree-level education in the performing arts and are committed to ensuring that Scotland’s cultural sector is as diverse and as vibrant as its population.

“In developing this partnership, I have been impressed with the talent, passion and enthusiasm of both the staff and students of New College Lanarkshire.

“I look forward to seeing each and every one of these students graduate and to welcoming them as a part of Queen Margaret University’s global network of alumni.”

The students are currently working on a series of performances to be staged in Glasgow theatres in May. BA Acting students will perform in two productions at Scottish Youth Theatre: Our Town from May 13 until 15, and All My Sons from May 18 until 20.

Meanwhile, BA Musical Theatre students will stage Nunsense and The Last Five Years at Websters Theatre on Great Western Road in Glasgow from May 22 until 26.
