LAST week a new board was voted in at the Penrith Valley Chamber of Commerce, with Vintage FM’s CEO Wayne Willmington chosen as the new President.

Outgoing President, Gina Field chose not to stand for election this year, stating that she’d like to dedicate more time to her local business, Nepean Regional Security.

“As the outgoing President of the Penrith Valley Chamber of Commerce I can feel comfortable that the baton is being handed over

to a capable team of business people, you are in good hands and the tradition continues,” Gina said.

WHEN I was a child, Bob really was my uncle.

Robert Stanley Stuart was a WW2 Veteran having served overseas in the Royal Australian Navy. He had many war-time stories to tell and he didn’t mind sharing them - especially after a few beers.

While most of the family would drift off to bed, I would sit for hours on end - transfixed in a world where food was rationed, canons and bayonets ruled and a letter from Australia was the most treasured gift one could behold.

Every year we’d go on holiday to Shoal Bay in Port Stephens and Uncle Bob would run the holiday apartment like it was the HMAS Sydney; we’d be woken each morning at dawn to the call “Fishing detail, fall out!”

Our holiday activities would be organised in a timetable- like fashion down to the minute.

And every year we’d embark on the hike up to the top of Tomaree Hill.

The historic Fort Tomaree played an important role in the defence of Port Stephens during WW2, including Tomaree Head that was solidly armed with gun emplacements.

During the walk I would hear more about WW2, the friendships formed, the politics at the time and the propaganda around the encouragement to enlist. I’d also hear about those who weren’t fortunate enough to return home.

It was more valuable to me and more detailed than anything I had learned about this chapter in history at school.

Uncle Bob has since passed on, but his stories will remain with me forever, and I’ve shared them with my own kids.

It’s really important that these first-hand accounts don’t get lost in time, buried and never to be retold. If you have a connection to someone who served this great nation, take the time to listen to anything they’re willing to share.

And pass it on.

While the historical detail and facts will always be available for future generations, the actual experiences of our veterans will not - unless we pass them on.

Exclusive: A chat with the Premier

OUR 45th Premier may have only been in the job 10 months now but Gladys Berejiklian is laying out her plans for NSW for the next 10 years.

Ms Berejiklian spoke exclusively to Nepean News on the dawn on yet another election cycle about some of the hot button topics facing western Sydney locals.

Across the Penrith CBD you can see crane after crane building the city even higher. Pushing that development further ahead is the NSW government, says Ms Berejiklian.

“We are entering an incredibly exciting time of record investment for Western Sydney.,” Ms Berejiklian said.

“The area is at the centre of the infrastructure revolution transforming NSW and creating tens of thousands of new jobs. We are committed to working with business and the community to make western Sydney an even better place to live, work and visit.”

At the forefront of this work is a $500 million upgrade to Nepean Hospital and the construction of an ambulance super station.

Ask anyone around western Sydney and they’ll tell you the cost of living is stifling their lives, with electricity prices rising by 20 percent in some cases and petrol prices predicted to stick to around $1.30 a litre next year.

The Premier says her government is working to ease the cost of living burdens on western Sydney families.

“Our CTP reform will save motorists around $120 a year in green slip insurance. We have increased support to families, low income earners and seniors by 20 per cent to assist with the cost of energy bills. We are also

addressing housing affordability by delivering savings of up to $34,360 for first homebuyers,” Ms Berejiklian said.

“From January next year, parents will be able to claim up to $100 per school child per year, to help with the cost of sport fees under the Active Kids Rebate – the list goes on.”

Key to western Sydney’s development is the proposed northsouth rail link with the Premier saying the current plan look set to focus on St Marys as the connecting rail hub for the new line.

“The NSW government is working with the Federal Government to finalise the Western Sydney Rail Needs Study, which looks at both North-South and East-West rail line options,” Ms Berejiklian said.

“Current investigations for the North-South Rail Link would see that line crossing the existing T1 Western Line around St Marys.”

One concern facing many locals is the development of an unrestricted 24/7 airport at Badgerys Creek.

“The Government is planning for the development of an aerotropolis, with trade, logistics, advanced manufacturing, health, education and science economy being developed around the new airport,” Ms Berejiklian said.

“This will bring new jobs, housing, infrastructure and services for the people of western Sydney,” she said.

With some 500 days until the next election voters have got a long time to make up their minds as to who they’d like to see lead NSW forward, meaning Ms Berejiklian has 500 days to convince the voters that it should be her to do that job.

“We are a strong, stable government delivering for all communities,” she said.

Community spirit shines from Kurrambee

THE Kurrambee School for special needs students is sharing the caring spirit around; having donated two buses to two similar schools in the Nepean region.

Both Fernhill School and Penrith Valley School are the recipients of a people mover bus each, thanks to the generosity of the team at Kurrambee School and the school’s charity wing, Little By Little.

President of Little By Little, and former teacher at Kurrambee, Allen Cullen handed over the keys and said donating these vehicles was a logical and charitable idea.

“We wanted to help out to allow Fernhill School and Penrith Valley School to take their students into the community. It will extend their learning environments and it will take them into the places they’re going to need skills for,” Mr Cullen said.

“By donating the buses we can help to allow students from Fernhill School and Penrith Valley School to have the same opportunities as the students from Kurrambee.”

The two buses donated include a wheelchair capable bus for Fernhill

School and a 14 seater for Penrith Valley School. Earlier this year Little

By Little donated a 14 seat bus to Fernhill School.

The Assistant Principal of Fernhill School, Rachael Casha said this “amazingly generous” donation will help improve the lives and learning outcomes of the school’s nine students who are wheelchair bound.

“It is such a great thing for us because this is only our second bus at Fernhill and this one has space

for wheelchairs, meaning access to the community for students in wheelchairs,” Ms Casha said.

“It offers some peace of mind to the families of the students because it means that they can be transported properly and safely into the community.”

Nic Danta is the Principal of the Penrith Valley School, a school for children who suffer from emotional disturbances and behavioural disabilities. He said the new 14 seater

bus will greatly help their school.

“Currently staff have to transport students in their own cars so this will make a huge impact to the staff and students at the school,” Mr Danta said.

“We take our students on excursions and camps because community engagement is a big part of our school.

“Soon we’ll be taking our students to Canberra for a camp so it is a big thing for us to be able to transport them in a bus like this,” he said.

Labor says cuts compromise start-ups’ future

TECH start-ups and students from Western Sydney University showed off their innovative inventions to the Deputy Federal Opposition Leader, Tanya Plibersek and Lindsay’s MP, Emma Husar ahead of proposed budget cuts to the university.

Western Sydney University is one of the youngest universities in Australia but Labor claims it is facing a potential funding cut of $98 million, which could jeopardise Western Sydney’s start-up tech culture.

“A $98 million cut will affect the students here greatly. 65 percent of students who come here are the first in their families to actually attend a university,” Ms Husar said.

“57 percent of the students here are female and around 27 percent of the students here come from low socioeconomic backgrounds, and they will all be hit the hardest by budget cuts.”

Tanya Plibersek, Deputy Leader of the Opposition, Shadow Minister for Education and Women, said this kind of funding cut isn’t happening anywhere else in the state.

“It is the largest funding cut to any university in New South Wales and it is really going to hit this university hard,” Ms Plibersek said.

“There are local students who are sitting the HSC who don’t know how much university will cost them next

year if Malcolm Turnbull gets his way.

“This government should give up on cuts to uni now and they should give students the certainty that they deserve,” she said.

The pair spoke at the Launch Pad start-up incubator, a place where students and professionals can come together to explore and develop innovative technology.

Student’s work on display included a smart bike, a 3D printer, innovative medial devices produced with the U.S. military and baby language development technology.

Ms Plibersek said the Launch Pad is vital to creating jobs and a prosperous

economic future for western Sydney.

“We don’t want smart, bright, driven people having to leave western Sydney to pursue their career opportunities elsewhere,” Ms Plibersek said.

“We need jobs in western Sydney.

We need high skilled, high tech jobs in western Sydney and incubators like this allow innovators and entrepreneurs to really develop their ideas and commercialise them on a local level.”

Reflecting on the ingenuity of the people of western Sydney, Ms Husar said she’s always excited by the innovation on show at the Launch Pad.

“Every time I come here I learn something new,” Ms Husar said.

“What I see here is that there are local people who can support knowledge jobs for our local area.

“We don’t need to be a community of freight warehouses and only the things the government is willing to offer. We have people on the ground here who have the skills and are willing and able to take their ideas forward into the global market,” she said.

According to Andy Marks, Assistant Vice Chancellor at Western Sydney University, the Launch Pad is one of three start-up incubators in western Sydney.

Heat stroke in pets As the weather heats up, the risk of heat stroke in pets rises. Heat stroke is a syndrome that occurs when an animal’s body temperature exceeds 40 degrees – this can cause problems with blood clotting and organ function. Heat stroke can result in shock, internal bleeding, organ failure and eventual death.

Cats and dogs are very different to humans because they cannot sweat from their skin. In humans, air circulating past sweaty skin cools the blood internally, so a person can still function on a 45 degree day. Dogs and cats only sweat through their foot pads, and with their bodies covered in fur, they cannot easily cool down. Animals will pant, to try and cool their internal body temperature but this is not very effective in extreme weather conditions. Dog breeds with short noses have a reduced ability to cool themselves with panting. Small animals like rabbits and guinea pigs are also very susceptible to heat stroke, especially if kept in outdoor enclosures.

As with children, DO NOT leave pets in cars, even briefly, especially in the warmer months. The internal temperature of a car can rapidly reach extreme temperatures greater than 50 degrees. Exercise naturally heats a dog and they cannot cool well when the ambient temperature is warm. Never let a dog do

strenuous exercise when the temperature is above 25 degrees. It is sensible to only exercise dogs early in the morning, or in the cool of evening during warmer months.

If extreme temperatures are predicted, then providing areas of shade or the cool of under the house will help. When temperatures greater than 40 degrees are predicted, leaving pets indoors with air conditioning is the best option. If this is not possible, then you can provide a child’s wading pool or plastic shell (left in a shady area) with only a few centimeters of water for dogs to lie in. Freezing water filled plastic bottles and placing them at the bottom of pet beds can also help cool down resting pets. Dogs will often enjoy drinking water from a large ice block as it melts

over the day. This can be done by freezing water in a 4 litre ice cream container. For rabbits and guinea pigs provide multiple watering devices – preferably dripper bottles so they do not get knocked over or dirty.

If you think your dog has heat stroke immediate veterinary attention is vital. Treatment includes safely cooling the patient, supporting with IV fluids and antibiotics. Additional treatment like plasma transfusions and support of organ function may be required. Some animals will die despite treatment.

Age no barrier when it comes to having fun

Local families enjoyed a day of intergenerational learning and fun as part of Penrith Council’s Grandparents Day Celebrations last month at Jamison Park. The annual celebration featured a host of activities designed to create connections across generations.

Mayor of Penrith, Cr John Thain, said the event was a great success and embodied the celebration of diversity Penrith prides itself on.

“Events like Grandparents Day provide opportunities for residents to meet new people, spend time with

their families and acknowledge the contribution people make to the communities of Penrith” Cr Thain said.

“It was a pleasure to spend this year’s celebration with over 500 community members who proved age isn’t a barrier when it comes to having fun and learning from each other,” he said.

One of the day’s highlights was the billy cart races, which thrilled spectators and participants alike.

races required young and old to work together to strategise and compete, resulting in some fierce but friendly competition.

As well as billy cart racing, event goers enjoyed traditional games including sack races and tug of war run by Community Junction, backyard cricket with Cricket NSW and a crocheting workshop run by local resident Virginia Lum. “Along with the billy cart races a personal highlight for me was seeing a grandmother learn to crotchet with the

help of her daughter and granddaughter who, acting as translators, assisted her in creating crocheted flowers. For me this spirit of cooperation is what events like Grandparents Day are all about,” Cr Thain said.

“I would like to thank everyone who contributed to making Grandparents Day such a memorable experience.

I hope to see even more people at next year’s event and look forward to celebrating the communities of Penrith over coming events including the Tree Lighting and Australia Day.”

Our thoughts for those currently serving our nation

THIS Remembrance Day we’re being asked to broaden our minds and to think about the veterans of the last 20 years as well as those who fought for us during the great wars of Europe and the Pacific.

Brian Cartwright, Vice President of the City of Penrith RSL subBranch, is calling on everyone to also pause to remember the service men and women who fought in the contemporary battlegrounds of the past 20 years this Remembrance Day and the sacrifices they’ve made.

“Service men and women currently serving miss out on all the milestones of their families lives so they’re still sacrificing a lot. It could be the birth of their child, their first steps, their first words or their first day of school,” Mr Cartwright said.

Currently the War on Terror, which commenced following the terror attacks of 9/11 on US soil, is one of the longest running wars of the last two decades with thousands of Australians troops being deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan. Mr Cartwright says these troops face battlegrounds never seen before.

“The troops who are over in the deserts and the Middle East are coming up against enemies they can’t even see in some cases,” Mr Cartwright said.

“With the change of tactics over time and use of IEDs and suicide bombers the soldiers over there

have to be on their guard 24/7 which is having longterm damaging effects.”

Figures from the 2010 Australian Defence Force (ADF) Mental Health Prevalence and Wellbeing study say it is estimated that 90 percent of ADF members have experienced at least one potentially traumatic event at some time in their life. This is compared to 73 percent of a sample of the Australian civilian community.

The ADF say they estimate approximately 8.3 percent of ADF members will have experienced Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in the last 12 months, which is significantly higher than the Australian community which sits around 5.2percent.

These figures frustrate the veterans at the RSL sub-Branches who are left scratching their heads questioning what to do next.

“100 years after the First World War and we are still asking ourselves the same questions,” Mr Cartwright said.

“There is a big difficulty within the community as a whole in understanding all the aspects of what is going on because service life is so different to civilian life.”

Thankfully there are people out there working hard so that those returned service men and women have somewhere to go.

“There are a number of Ex-Service Organisations (ESO’s) out there providing welfare and other support services to the Defence community, like the Defence Shed, a place for returned service men to go and chat together in a male friendly environment, there is the Women’s Veterans Network Australia and of course the RSL sub-Branches,” Mr Cartwright said.

This Remembrance Day we’re being reminded to take a minute for those still serving.

“It is about remembering today’s service members and their families. As a nation we need to ask ourselves do we support our serving contemporary veterans and how can we do more to support them and their families, especially post-service life.” Mr Cartwright said.

“On this Remembrance Day, when the guns were silenced after 4 years of conflict to end World War I on 11 November 1918, we pay tribute to those past and present who served our Country and sacrificed their lives with courage and conviction.”

Support for our veteran heroes

THERE is a special place in western Sydney that offers hope and support to contemporary veterans who are suffering from mental health issues after their deployment and exit from the armed services.

Homes for Heroes runs with the motive to support the recovery of former defence service persons by offering them a community in which they can live and be supported.

Melissa Neish, the Western Sydney Manager of Homes for Heroes, says the program is based on the core principle of support and mateship, two attitudes that are also key to all branches of the Australian Defence Force.

“The program is based on the concept of providing residents a safe, stable home and ensuring that veterans have access to the support and services they require to address their needs,” Ms Neish said.

“This includes essentials such as having enough to eat and access to required medications but also having opportunities to learn new skills and engage in meaningful activities. We hope that by having these needs met and giving access to camaraderie and support through the program and general community, these veterans will continue their recovery journey and transition to living fulfilling civilian lives.”

Home for Heroes operates with the idea that “with the right support anyone can recover” and Ms Neish supports this by saying we need to focus on the

recovery efforts and the hope that exists for veterans suffering from mental illness, particularly when it comes to Remembrance Day. “The words ‘damaged and broken’ are often used in reference to veterans experience post traumatic stress. Whenever you hear the words damaged or broken used in relation to our veterans, I ask that you keep in mind that post traumatic stress is a condition that can develop in response to traumatic events,” Ms Neish said.

“It is easiest thought of in terms of what has happened to a person, rather than what is wrong with the person. I see the use of the terms ‘damaged and broken’ as potentially damaging in themselves, as these words suggest that it is something wrong with the person, rather than a consequence of what they have been through.”

Homes for Heroes doesn’t just support veterans with mental illness, they also help put a roof over the heads of many homeless former service personnel.

Ms Neish says the factors that led to homelessness are often the same for veterans as they are for civilians.

“I’ve often been asked how veterans become homeless, how is this allowed to happen, and the answer is not a simple one,” Ms Neish said.

“Homelessness often results from an accumulation of factors and is not a circumstance limited to any one group of individuals.”

This Remembrance Day, and every other day between now and the next Remembrance Day, we are being urged to throw our support behind veterans, whether it be our uncles, grandfathers, mates, sisters or our neighbour next door.

“The majority of us have a veteran in our personal life, or we all know someone who has served, and it is important to remember people all year round, and not just on the days of commemoration like Anzac and Remembrance Days,” Ms Neish said.

“It is important to engage with veterans all year round. Whilst there is certainly a role for professional supports for veterans who may have mental health needs, anyone can simply lend an ear or have a cup of tea with a veteran who might need a bit of support from time to time.”

PETER Anderson might be a name you’re familiar with. He has had a life lived in the public eye across his numerous careers and he is

someone who cares passionately about arts within the Nepean region.

Serving as a Labor politician in the NSW lower house for 17 years from 1978 to 1995 he was a prominent member of multiple Labor state governments including working for

Premiers Neville Wran and Barrie Unsworth, and was a Shadow Minister in Bob Carr’s Opposition team.

Before he was a politician Peter was a public servant working in the land tax office and the stamp duty office before becoming a police officer and police prosecutor, jobs he held for ten years.

Elected to Penrith City Council in 1977 and then elected into Macquarie Street in 1978 he started the ball rolling on a long political career. From 1981 until 1994 Peter held 17 different portfolios, Ministerships and Shadow Ministerships. Peter said for him there are two cabinet appointments that stand out above all others.

“Obviously being the Minister for Police had an attraction to me having been a police officer. My desire whilst being in the police was to reform it and whilst I was in the role we were able to do a lot of things,” Peter said.

“I also ended up as Minister for Health and that was a great learning experience. My regret was that I didn’t have more time in that portfolio. I encountered a whole range of health professionals who all did amazing things and I think we are extremely fortunate for the health service we have now.”

Being a former politician means Peter has strong opinions about how policy should be made, who is making the policy and who is being left out of the picture. In his eyes western Sydney still isn’t getting what it deserves.

“Too often decisions are made that impact the people of western Sydney by people who couldn’t find their way past Burwood. It is the inner city people who have a lot to say and who substantially impact decision making but do nothing for the ongoing inequity facing the people of western Sydney,” Peter said.

Reflecting on his own time as an MP, Peter says the politics of today isn’t like the politics of yesteryear. He says the media and politicians are making the game “nasty” and “negative” with a lot more pressure placed on the families of politicians.

“Politics in my day was much tougher but it wasn’t as nasty,” Peter said.

“There used to be lines that were not crossed and they’re now being crossed.

You used to not go into the business of politicians families but now everything is being politicised. It is this 24 hour news cycle.

Peter Anderson political debate today is that people say things in the public arena when they know it is blatantly wrong,” he said.

Politics today seems more polarised than ever before, but Peter has a piece of advice for the vying politicians currently in parliaments across Australia.

“Politics is like football. You get in and play the game as hard as you can in accordance with the rules and at the end you shake hands and you walk off the paddock,” Peter said.

“You treat your opponents with respect because respect costs nothing.

“People think politics is a really complex thing but it is really about people that’s all it is, and if you forget that you make a tragic mistake,” he said.

With his long standing connection to the Nepean area you’d assume Peter grew up in Penrith, but in fact he grew up in Sydney, attending Sydney Boys High School.

It wasn’t until he and his wife wanted to buy a house that they decided on Penrith as a suitable location after they’d been priced out of the inner city housing market, a fact of life for many young people today.

“We did what everyone did when

they couldn’t afford to live in the inner city, we tried to find something in a cheaper location and Emu Plains was where we settled in 1971,” he said.

After his career in politics Peter became involved in the work of the Penrith art scene where, in 1995, he became Director of the Penrith Bicentennial Performing Arts Centre, now known as the Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre.

In 1997 Peter also became Chairman of the Board of the Penrith Regional Gallery and the Lewers Bequest leading to the merger of both organisations in 2004. Subsequently in 2006 the Railway Street Theatre Company (formerly the Q Theatre Company) was also merged into what is now known as Penrith Performing and Visual Arts Ltd which he has chaired since 2006.

“My participation with the Joan across the years wasn’t to the benefit of arts aficionados but it was about giving ordinary people access to arts and culture that they deserved,” Peter said.

“People can draw a little bit of inspiration out of art no matter whether it be an artwork, a performance or a piece of music.

“It has always been my hope that people would go to the Penrith

Regional Gallery or come to a show at the Joan for the first time in their lives and enjoy it so much that they return for another round,” he said.

Even though he is now largely retired from the public life Peter still performs and sings with the River Valley Singers, a local Nepean choir, something he does for passion and for the love of music above everything else.

“I enjoy the singing but the key thing

is you get to see the faces of the people you’re singing to and it is always wonderful to see the audience singing along and smiling because they too love the music,” he said.

Men’s Shed donates props for local education

The handymen at the Nepean Men’s Shed have passed on their replica parliamentary dispatch boxes to the MP for Lindsay, Emma Husar.

Ms Husar expressed her gratitude to the members of the Men’s Shed who have put in many work hours to create the replica dispatch boxes for the students of the Nepean.

“I was honoured to attend the Nepean Men’s Shed to receive two magnificent dispatch boxes,” Ms Husar said.

The two replica dispatch boxes will be used at local schools across the area when they perform mock parliaments. Ms Husar said they’ll add new elements to the children’s education.

“It was particularly special to receive the dispatch boxes that will be used by children across the electorate when we have mock parliaments at their schools,” Ms Husar said.

“It is a great opportunity for kids to learn about parliament and run a debate. The boxes are a beautiful addition to the theatre of debating legislation and understanding what happens at Parliament.”

According to the Parliamentary Education Office, dispatch boxes sit on either side of the House of Representatives and are used as a place for MPs to place their notes when speaking to Parliament. The ones that sit currently in the House of Representatives were gifted to the Parliament by England’s King George V in 1927 and are replicas of the boxes that sit in the Houses of Parliament in London.

The boxes were constructed by Nepean Men’s Shed members Kevin Saunders and Joe Guiana with Paul Mills engraving the Australian Coat of Arms into the top of it.

Whilst she was visiting the Nepean Men’s Shed, Ms Husar was given a tour of the facilities on offer to members of the Shed and commented on the positive impacts the unique environment has on the mental health of its members.

“It was wonderful to be with the Men’s Shed in their tenth year. The Nepean Men’s Shed has been open in its current location since March this year,”

Ms Husar said.

“It has been providing a safe, friendly and healing environment where men are able to work on meaningful projects at their own pace in their own time in the company of other men.”

2017 NSW Open Championship the place for the NSW Open

ayor of Penrith, Councillor John Thain, is thrilled to see the NSW Open Golf Championship make its home at Twin Creeks Golf and Country Club in Penrith City for the next three years.

“It’s another exciting event that we have coming to our city,” Cr Thain said.

“We have the Australian Ballet, our festival and then we have the NSW Open.”

“November will be one of the most exciting months of the year.”

Cr Thain believes the tournament will build confidence in the City and the greater western Sydney region.

It will be another sporting event that the local community embraces with pride.

“An event like this puts our name forward. It gives confidence in our city, and I’m really grateful to Golf NSW for bringing the event out here because it’s going to be a cracker.”

“We are sport mad out here. We had the Matildas here a couple of weeks ago. It’s the first place they have sold a stadium out and I expect the crowds out here at Twin Creeks will be pretty good as well because we love sport.”

“There are a huge number of golfers out here, quite a number of courses and Twin Creeks is an exceptional venue and a fantastic place to have a Championship like the NSW Open.”

Hole-By-Hole: Hole 1 359m Par 4 The fairway is trapped both right and left, but the landing area is very generous. The smart way to play this opening hole is to play safe to the centre of the fairway, then a short iron to a generous green.

Hole 2 144m Par 3 A beautiful short par 3. Many players are deceived by the bunkers across the front and will play one club short. The green is divided into two sections by a strong ridge running parallel to the line of play through the centre of the green.

Hole 3 302m Par 4 A very challenging golf hole. Players feeling courageous can go for the green in one. However the ideal tee shot will carry across the corner of the creek to a generous landing area short of the green.

A short wedge to the green and two putts is all that is required for a par.

Hole 4 395m Par 4 A very strong par 4. Accuracy is required off the tee to the narrow fairway through the trees. Bunkers short right and deep grassy hollows short left of the

green will put a premium on the long iron approach shot.

Hole 5 513m Par 5 A good tee shot over the right side bunker is essential to have any chance of getting home for two. Then you have the option of laying up short of the creek or carrying the creek to a landing area just short of the green. The green is quite heavily contoured and guarded by a large bunker on the right side approach.

Hole 6 186m Par 3 From the back tee, a long accurate iron is required to play through a narrow opening amongst the trees, across the creek to the green. The left side pin placement will be very difficult as it is guarded both front and rear by bunkers.

Hole 7 346m Par 4 Only measures 346 metres from the back tees but being uphill and with a narrow driving area, this par 4 will test all levels of golf. For the best approach, attack the pin from the left side fairway.

Hole 8 411m Par 4 One of the strongest golf holes on the course. A tee shot over the left side fairway traps will leave the ideal approach to the green. Players aiming away from these traps and landing on the right side fairway will be faced with a very difficult long, uphill approach to an angled green guarded by hazards.

Hole 9 545m Par 5 Take on the inside left bunker and land to the left side fairway. From there, play a very long shot over the hazards to the green, or play short of the fairway bunkers to a layup area just short of the green. The green may be large but the contours and greenside traps will test all approaches.

Dating back to 1931, The New South Wales Open has showcased the best of the sport in our State, the courses and the players. The Open trophy has the names of the legends of not only NSW but Australian Golf inscribed on it and includes names like Norman, Thomson, Baker-Finch, as well as the person it is now named after, Kel Nagle.

“Twin Creeks and the City of Penrith now have a wonderful sporting championship to call their own for at least the next three years, and Golf NSW is thrilled to be here,” Mr Fraser said.

Hole 10 371m Par 4 The ideal tee shot should take on the left side bunkers. Take care when approaching the back left pin position as the green slopes away steeply off the back.

Hole 11 521m Par 5 A good drive to the right side fairway will give you the choice of either laying up short of the wetland or playing long towards the end of the fairway at the second landing area. A pinpoint accurate approach is required to a raised green surrounded by deep bunkers.

Hole 12 309m Par 4 Play a long drive to the right side fairway. The green has a gentle mound in the centre that clearly divides the green into three distinct pin positions. These tricky contours and the greenside traps will ensure that this golf hole will play with more difficulty than it looks.

Hole 13 356m Par 4 A hole that places a premium on the accuracy of the drive. The landing area is heavily guarded with bunkers on both sides, short and beyond the landing zone. A good drive will be rewarded with a short iron approach to a well guarded green.

Hole 14 179m Par 3 A testing par 3 across a gully to a green situated on a ridge. Even though the green is quite large, accuracy will be required to hit one of the three pin positions.

Hole 15 525m Par 5 A long and testing 525 metre par 5 carved uphill through the remnant forest. The real test will be on accuracy as the adjoining timber will swallow up any errant shot.

Hole 16 417m Par 4 Probably the most difficult golf hole on the course. It is very long with water on the right for almost the full length of the golf hole. The green is guarded to the right by a bunker and to the left by a large tree.

Hole 17 163m Par 3 Water to the left and bunkers to the front and back makes this 163 metre par 3 a very strong test of golf to players of all levels. A gentle ridge running through the green from front to back will place an even higher premium on the tee shot.

Hole 18 402m Par 4 The 18th hole is a great way to finish the round.

The tee shot must play long and to the left side of the fairway adjacent to the water. From here a long accurate iron is required to the lakeside green.

“Graham Marsh said it was his favourite hole on the course,” Haddad said.

“On the back nine, the pivotal hole could be the heavily bunkered short par four 12th.”

“You’ll find there will be a few eagles on this hole,” Haddad said.

“90% of the field will be able to reach this green provided there’s no wind into their face.”

“Aaron Townsend was the first player to have a hole-in-one albatross on this hole not long after it first opened, back in 2008.”

“There are bunkers everywhere here. It’s easy to make a two or a

Haddad believes the three critical holes on the course to look out for are the fourth, 12th and 18th.

“Without a doubt, the most important hole on the front nine is the fourth hole,” Haddad said.” Risk reward for the long-hitter if they want to take on the creek and fire it over, they’ll have a short iron into the hole.”

“Layup and you have to go in with a seven iron to nine iron.”

The hole has a hazard on the righthand side and trees on the left, with a

three, but you could walk off with a six quite easily also.”

The last hole Haddad believes will make or break a player is the picturesque 18th, the final hole on the course. Despite the magnificent water views, the massive tree on the left-hand side means some strategy from off the tee.

“You have to hit a draw from the tee. Otherwise, you’ll find the fairway trap and then have a nice, long shot into a green that is heavily guarded by bunkers and water.”

“It’s a good viewing hole for spectators,” Haddad said. “ Hopefully we’ll see someone hole a nice putt for the championship right in front of us.”

Star studded field primed for NSW OPEN

ome of Australia’s finest professionals and a bunch of international stars are preparing for the challenge of the Graham Marsh designed Twin Creeks Golf and Country Club.

Western Australian Brett Rumford and South Australian Jason Norris, himself a former NSW Open Champion in 2007, have both tasted victory this year on the ISPS Handa PGA Tour of Australasia. Rumford was victorious at the Perth Super Sixes back in February and Norris,

the $1,700,000 Fiji International in August.

Victorian Ashley Hall, who was beaten in a play-off by Jordan Spieth for last year’s Australian Open Championship will also make his presence felt, so too will his state counterpart Todd Sinnott, who won this year’s Myanmar Open, a cosanctioned Asian and Japanese Tour event.

A number of former NSW Open Champions will be vying for another chance to lift the Kel Nagle Cup. Ben

Eccles (2015), Aron Price (2013), Peter O’Malley (2010), Leigh McKechnie (2009) Aaron Townsend (2008), Rick Kulacz (2006), Michael Wright (2005) and Peter Lonard (2004) will all be ready when the championship begins on Thursday.

International stars are coming from far and wide, including Texan Kramer Hickok, who won the 2017 PGA Tour of Canada Order of Merit and Italian Luca Cianchetti, the 2016 European Amateur Champion who is now in his rookie year as a pro. There are also

visitors from Denmark, England, Fiji, Germany, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, the United States, Scotland, Thailand and Tonga competing for the Kel Nagle Cup. This year’s Open will also mark the professional debut two of our State’s amateur stars, Travis Smyth and Harrison Endycott. The duo signed off on their outstanding amateur careers after representing Australia at the recently completed AsiaPacific Amateur Championship in Wellington, New Zealand.

roy Moses can’t wait for the NSW Open to get underway, after all, it’s his backyard.

“I’ve lived here in Penrith all my life,” the 25-year-old said.

Moses is a member of Twin Creeks and these days uses the course as his practice base. He was overjoyed when he heard the Open was coming to town and expects his local knowledge and the family and friends that will show up to support him will be an advantage.

“I’ve been playing there a fair bit to learn as much as I can since joining,” Moses said.

“I’m a Dunheved boy through and through, so there will be plenty of supporters out there.”

“The course will be in great shape. It sets up well for a big event. They can tuck the pins and make it tough.”

Moses was introduced to the sport aged 14 at

nearby Dunheved Golf Club, and after showing some promise, he became a member of the Golf NSW HighPerformance Program, bagging a couple of big wins in a solid amateur career along the way.

Now in his rookie year on tour, Moses has found his feet and has posted a couple of encouraging results, including a 10th place finish just last month at the Isuzu Queensland Open. Moses said the step up in class to the pro ranks has meant working harder on his game than ever before.

“Taking on the pro ranks meant stepping up my game to another level. There are so many great players with some pretty successful careers out here, guys that have played PGA Tour before.”

“I’m treating every event as an opportunity, and I’m just trying to get better at every event.”

When asked about the one thing, in particular, that would give him an edge over the rest of the field, Moses smiled and said; “It will just be nice to play a big tournament and get to sleep in my own bed for a change.”

A

young man from Penrith is currently competing in the NSW Open after guaranteeing a spot with his win at the NSW Open Regional Qualifying event at Griffith Golf Club.

Joshua Gadd, who just finished studying for the Higher School Certificate, booked his place in the NSW Open at Twin Creeks with matching rounds of one-over par 72 to win by a shot from Griffith local Matthew Staines.

The trip out to Griffith wasn’t Gadd’s first attempt at snaring a spot in this year’s NSW Open. He made the trek to Forbes earlier this year only to lose by a shot to local John Betland.

“I made the five-hour trek to Forbes early this year to get beaten by one. I was a little bit heartbroken on the drive back from there, so the 6 1/2 trip after winning by one was a huge relief for me,” Joshua said.

It will be Gadd’s second start in the NSW Open after an impressive debut last year at Stonecutters Ridge. The 17-year-old wowed many with the maturity of his game when he made the cut and finished the four rounds with a score of 12-under par.

“It was an awesome experience, playing alongside Matt Giles, Daniel Nisbet and Stephen Leaney,” he said.

“I learned so much from Leaney. He was so comfortable with his game.

He shot nine under 63 in the final round; it was good to watch.”

After the nerves of his debut last year, Gadd believes his approach to the Championship this time around will be a lot more relaxed. He knows the Twin Creeks course well and is confident of putting up a real fight for the championship.

“I only live five minutes down the road from the course, and we train there with the Western Sydney Academy of Sport. I am looking to be very competitive this year,” he said.

Joshua will be one of the youngest competitors in this year’s NSW Open and will be hoping that his experience from last year as well as training there frequently will help him record a good overall ranking come to the end of the tournament.

Fab four to tee it up alongside PGA stars

our Nepean junior golfers are in for the thrill of a lifetime when they tee it up alongside an Australasian PGA Tour Star like Brett Rumford, or 2017 Fiji International winner Jason Norris in the NSW Open Junior Pro-Am at Twin Creeks Golf and Country Club.

The four junior golfers are Blake Hodges of Dunheved Golf Club, Ben Watson of Sprinwood Golf Club, Coby Carruthers of Leonay Golf Club and Chazz Ritchie of Wenthworth Falls Golf Club.

They will get to experience the 18 hole Twin Creeks course in full tournament condition alongside an Australasian PGA star on the eve of the NSW Open Championship which gets underway on November 16.

Blake Hodges, from Erskine Park is just 11 years old and already carving a name for himself locally.

Jarred, Blake’s father, said he has a lot of passion for the game, playing most weekends at Dunheved and watching tournaments every chance he gets.

“He’s always been good at sport, even at 18 months old he was handy with the plastic clubs and cricket bat,” Jarred said.

Blake displays pride in his indigenous heritage while playing golf. His clubs are painted with aboriginal artwork by Darren Dunn.

St Columbus student, 14 year old Ben Watson comes from a sporting family and has already notched up quite a few achievements in

the short 18 months that he’s been playing.

“He just loves it, he’s out every week,” said Ben’s father. “He really enjoys it and loves the freedom. He feels very honoured to have this opportunity.”

A total of 74 junior golfers from across the state were selected to take part after being nominated by their local club. Participants are travelling from all over the state.

This is the second year Golf NSW has run the Junior Pro-Am and the event is proving to be a hit for the participants.

Just when you thought it was safe to leave your homes and venture out into the vulnerable world of the shopping centre, there you have it, just like your mother slapping you across the face after coming home drunk for the first time. The premature decorators!!!!!

I call them The PD club (Why am I hearing jaws music)?

Have you ever watched Crime Stoppers and thought, I never knew that he or she was capable of that? The neighbours are interviewed they say, “he was a quiet person, lovely family, I never knew that this street could house people like that,” and then look shocked.

Well the PD club are like that, they just look like meek and mild people, harmless and quiet, but deep down

that are hiding a secret, perhaps even hiding tinsel in the wardrobe, who knows? But once they are out together, anything is possible. Similar to the zombie apocalypse?

Scientists still can’t work out the chemical imbalance in the PD’ers brain that gives them to urge to pull out the odd Santa and tree before December.

Statistics have shown that most grow up and run shopping centres, department stores, kid’s warehouses and the most hardened PD’s usually run department stores in the city where they can PD in about August.

Thankfully they are testing drugs at the moment that may stabilise the chemical imbalance to make PD’s actually want to start decorating in December. Trials have begun.

So as a security professional I am not really sure how to stop the PD club,

however I can tell you that Christmas time is a great time for the baddies to come out and play. A couple of years ago a business near our business office left the gate unlocked, left for the Xmas shut down and boom the opportunist struck. All over Christmas in fact!

Hey, the buildings were alarmed but all the stuff in the yard (worth mega dollars) was laying there in all its glory, saying take me, pick me!!!!

There was a very well-executed clean out that lasted the entire weekend, because the baddies knew that this business was closed for business. How? Because it had a sign on it saying, back on what-ever date.

“Yippee,” the baddies screamed and happily cleaned them out of all the stock in the yard - 30 grand of crafted sandstone, to be exact.

Thankfully, good old NRS (my security company) was across the road

and with the use of our cameras, the offenders were tracked down, caught and some stock returned. The other stuff was sold, oh and of course they burnt a truck out as well.

So let me ask you this? How would losing 30 grand from your business affect your operations? How would losing 30 grand from your house affect you?

So while you may say, “nah we will be right mate!” think about your security needs over Chrissy. Alarms, cameras, patrols, guards or whatever!

There are some things I can help you with and some things that I can’t, such as shopping and listening to “I’m dreaming of a white Christmas” in Coles on a 36 degree day in November.

So there you have it, the PD club will overrun us one day, think about your security and may your Christmas shopping begin!

“Toonerville” – the war awakes a country town

A

n article in the Sydney Sun written by Clem Clevesen in 1942 calls St Marys “Toonerville”. Clem writes – “The town lay sleeping under a warm sun when a little group of men got out of the midday train some months back and a half hour later these men were backing away from a hillside. The charge boomed and the hillside crumbled. A dozing old man fell off his chair outside the store and sat up and blinked. Hey, Toonerville was awake. Harold Bennett. a third-generation wagon builder said “I went to the pub for a couple last Saturday, I thought I would pick up someone. I was there half an hour before I saw anyone I knew and I was born in the town and I had to shove to get a drink! New people are everywhere in town, the first three people who asked directions I said sorry I live here but I’m a stranger.” Accommodation to the little town is crammed. About 50 new buildings have gone up, mostly cottages and more applications are in hand, building blocks are surveyed, shop sites are laid out. New cottages are among the little old homes with greying tin roofs, fading brick. Here and there red-raw timber skeletons of new houses stretch their arms to the sky.

Some of the women and children with their newly arrived husbands share tent-town homes. But you can still pick the old residents. They always have a “Good-day sir, lovely bit o’ rain. A glance around shows the new rubbing shoulders with the old. Modern red-light rail-crossing signals winking at meandering cows, row on row of bicycles at the old bridle rail and the glance around Toonerville takes you straight back to its early days, shows you the House on the Hill built four years before Darwin called on the Governor’s son next door. This house built for a Governor’s daughter has a view all over Toonerville and with its years, a view over the town’s and Australia’s history from the end of the 1700’s. Away yonder is Rev. Marsden’s model farm which housed the first bales of Australian wool shipped to England. The house is there still but today sheep run through its old hall, sleep in its crumbling rooms. When Toonerville was beginning in the first decade of the 1800’s however, the farm was different, a two-story homestead with gravel drive, 20 to 30 assigned convict servants, rich orchard, horses (bred on the farm) worth 100 guineas. Gregory Blaxland was living across the river then. From his home there he left with Wentworth and Lawson on his valuable crossing of the Blue Mountains. It was the stamping ground of Governors, the Kings, the Bligh’s liked its quietness its little lake. Governor Bligh’s daughter Mary Putland, her second husband Sir Maurice O’Connell, Governor King’s wife Anna Joseph, his son Admiral Phillip Parker King had vast grant’s that was finally sold and his daughter Mary Lethbridge had 1,000 acres.

To them it was a pleasant country place destined to be important. To the bullockies already camping there on their way over Blaxland’s mountain pass, it was the scene of many an opposition team brawl, and it was where Mrs Andrews carried a wounded bushranger to her home, nursed him well and freed him on its camping ground. In the main street they roasted a whole “borrowed” bullock. The House family had lived in Toonerville for years before the House was built in 1832. The House was built for Mary King who was to marry Robert Copland Lethbridge of the local law family. Built faithfully

by King’s convict servants. The House still is charming and a home for William Baron Lethbridge. The House watched Toonerville’s pleasures develop, the ploughing contests, bullock-teams and horseteams racing said by some the “best-bottomed horses ever seen.”

Eight years after the village was big enough to need a name in 1840 it was christened and a post office was built there whose name appeared for the first time, but from then on, the village developed faster.

Nepean River now home to the Women’s National Training Centre Australia’s female rowers have celebrated a massive boost to their Gold medal hopes today.

Sports Minister Stuart Ayres and Patron of Rowing Australia Gina Rinehart officially unveiled the $2 million Hancock Prospecting Women’s National Training Centre in Penrith, situated on the banks of the stunning Nepean River.

“This new purpose-built high-performance facility means gold medal success at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games is within our grasp,” Mr Ayers said.

“Australia has a rich history of rowing success and we were delighted to see athletes such as Lucy Stephan, Madeleine Edmunds and Georgia Miansarow bring home medals from the recent World Championships and this will help them do it again in Tokyo.

“The opening also cements Western Sydney’s position as a thriving sports hub for elite athletes,” Mr Ayres added.

Up to 25 top female rowers can now call the centre home, which comes equipped with a boat shed, a full rowing fleet, strength and conditioning facilities.

Rob Scott, the Rowing Australia President spoke about the future of women rowing and gave his thanks to all involved during the construction of the new facility.

“We thank our Patron Mrs Gina Rinehart, the New South Wales Government, NSW Institute of Sport, the Australian Institute of Sport, Rowing New South Wales and Penrith City Council for their vision and foresight to create this facility and invest in the future of women’s rowing.”

“I’d like also to acknowledge that our ability to provide our athletes in these centres with direct financial support along with world best coaching and

sport science and medicine, is underpinned by our Patron Mrs Rinehart’s significant annual investment, in addition to her contribution to the building of the centre. Thank you also to the Nepean Rowing Club who’ve assisted our program whilst the permanent facility was being built.”

Lucy Stephan, the Women’s Four World Champion spoke about the facility in Penrith and how the Nepean River is one of the best water training facilities.

“It’s awesome to be moving into our own dedicated facility here in Penrith. We really enjoy training on the Nepean River, it provides us with some of the best long-distance training water in the country and we’re so excited to now be training out at the centre fulltime.”

This year Australia took home three gold medals, two silver and one bronze from the World Rowing Championships in Florida.

The Australian Auroras excel in China

The 13th IDBF World Dragon Boat Racing Championships have concluded in Kunming, China after a successful tournament for the Australians. Leading up to the tournament the Australian ‘Auroras’ Senior ‘C’ rowers were training seven days a week in order to get the stamina and fitness needed for the races. The senior team consisted of individuals from the age of 60 and up.

The majority of the team arrived in Melbourne on the 12th October for the final two days of water trials and preparation following which the team flew to Kunming, China on the 15th.

After settling in for a day it was back on the water at Dianchi Lake where the Championships were going to be held.

Kunming is at 1900m above sea level so the altitude was going to come into play for those teams not used to the thinner air. Luckily specific training for the Auroras assisted with a fairly quick acclimatisation for the team.

Racing over five days, the Senior ‘C’ team competed in the following events: 2000m (Mixed crew and Open), 500m (Mixed, Women’s and Open) and 200m (Mixed, women’s and Open). Racing was undertaken in both Small boat

(10 person) and Standard boat (20 person).

Ray Curran, a member of the Australian Aurora team managed to come home with six medals overall (three silver and three bronze).

Ray spoke about the experience of traveling to China for the event and the challenges his team faced during the races.

“The conditions were challenging to say the least, firstly the altitude, then the lake itself had an algae bloom

early on and turned green, then day three it started to rain and rained for most of the rest of the competition and finally a number of team members came down with a rather nasty flu bug,” he said.

“The experience was fantastic though and the honour of representing your country, even at my level is certainly a privilege and one to be remembered.”

With exceptionally tight and close racing over the week, mainly between

the Canadians, USA and the Germans, the Australian Auroras team overall won 35 medals (five Gold, 19 Silver, 11 Bronze).

“With every medal came a garland of flowers so our tent looked like a garden nursery at the end of competition,” Ray said.

Ray and the rest of the Australian ‘Auroras’ Senior ‘C’ rowers will recover after the event before getting back on the water in preparation of their next tournament.

$6 million Moylan – Maloney player swap looms:

With PENRITH CEO Brian Fletcher having confirmed to the Daily Telegraph last Friday that the $6 million player swap between Panthers skipper Matt Moylan and Cronulla star James Maloney should be finalised at some point this week, the impending deal raises many questions.

Who won the deal? Why the swap?

What does it mean for the Panthers?

With the assistance of fellow columnist, Mark Geyer we’ll answer those questions and tackle the issues that arise from this looming blockbuster trade.

WHO WON THE DEAL? There’s no secret the Panthers are getting a two-time premiership winner, current Australian and incumbent NSW Origin five-eighth in James Maloney, despite being 31 years of age.

With over 200 NRL games under his belt, Maloney has the big game experience and a solid record of success earned at the Warriors, Roosters and Sharks.

A halves combination of Maloney and Cleary will no doubt excite Panther fans.

On the other side, the Sharks are getting a playmaker five years Maloney’s junior on a four-year deal worth a reported $3.6 million, who has yet to reach his peak, despite having previously played for NSW and Australia.

According to Geyer, on paper its Penrith the winner right now but Cronulla could be the winner in the long run.

“Maloney brings two things with him. A winning culture and he’s competitive,” MG declared.

“He’s been there done it, he’s a proven winner and the stats don’t lie.

“Even though he only played four games for the Storm he would have learned a lot from being in that system and took that to the Warriors.

“While they didn’t win a title they did get to a grand final with him.

“From there he’s been to the Roosters where he won a comp and did the same with the Sharks.

“But on the other hand, Moylan has got a lot more tomorrows then Maloney.”

WHY THE SWAP? It’s no secret Maloney is unhappy with his current salary at the Sharks and despite having one year left on his contract, the Sharks are willing

to release him instead of increasing his pay given they have that suitable replacement in Moylan.

The Panthers have struck a reported deal with Maloney worth up to $2.5 million over three years to replace a clearly unhappy Matt Moylan.

Despite general manager Phil Gould’s attempts to keep Moylan at Penrith, it’s become clear that the skipper wants out of the club he joined as a local junior with a fractured relationship between player and coach said to be at the heart of the issue.

Geyer said that whilst regrettable, Moylan’s departure might be the best

solution for both club and player.

“I feel sorry that Matt Moylan looks set to leave the club because he is one of my favourite players to watch when he is at his best,” Geyer conceded.

“It’s unfortunate he and the coach couldn’t sort their differences but that happens from time to time at every club and players often move because of that.

What does it all mean for the Penrith Panthers?

Maloney will bring that muchneeded structure to Penrith’s general attacking play.

As Geyer alludes it also means that anything less than a top-six finish would be considered a failure.

“They’ll have assembled a team that is really strong and most will be picking us again to finish in the top four before a ball is kicked,” Geyer said.

“I think a top four finish is definitely within reach and anything below a top six finish would be quite unacceptable in 2018.”

WHO TAKES OVER AS CAPTAIN? Will the Panthers go back to the future with Peter Wallace, who finished 2017 as captain in Moylan’s absence, but comes off contract at the end of 2018 and is no certainty to be playing after then?

Despite the uncertainty of Wallace’s playing future post-2018, Geyer firmly believes the Panthers hooker is currently the best captaincy candidate.

job,” Geyer stated.

“I think he would have the most respect out of any player there at the moment and that says a lot in who you make as your captain, no matter whether he is only got another year left in him.

“While Peter Wallace is at Penrith then he should be the captain. He’s earned that right.”

WHO IS THE GOAL-KICKER? As the leading point scorer in the NRL for 2017, Nathan Cleary’s tally of 228 points saw him become the

youngest player to achieve the feat in over a century, with his goal-kicking making up a significant slice of his haul and was the only goal-kicker in the competition to kick with over 90% accuracy.

But James Maloney’s career average of over 80% offers Penrith a unique opportunity according to Geyer, which could result in Cleary taking his game to a new level.

“I think Cleary flourishes with the goal-kicking but Maloney is also the kicker for NSW and Australia,” Geyer said.

“Taking the goal-kicking off Cleary maybe allow him to improve his game given that the hours that he puts in away from the training paddock (kicking goals).

“If those hours are instead spent honing his playmaking skills, kicking game etc., that might be a bonus.”

DOES THE DEAL HELP OR HINDER PLAYER RETENTION? Apart from Dylan Edwards and Tyrone May, only Josh Mansour and Wallace come off-contract at the end of 2018 hence will this deal given a relatively tight salary cap, prevent the club from retaining Edwards and/or May, given they will receive significant increases on existing contracts?

There are already suggestions that Dylan Edwards, whom the club can ill-afford to lose on top of Moylan’s looming departure, is attracting interest from the Wests Tigers, who already had one pre June-30 approach rejected, along with Melbourne.

Unless a contracted player is released early or Mansour / Wallace are not re-signed, Geyer admits Maloney’s impending arrival could see either Edwards or May forced out of the club.

“No doubt Edwards and May going to be much sort after for the coming years,” MG responded.

“They (Edwards and May) will need to work out whether that in order to stay at the club, they may have to play for less just to reach higher honours with that playing group.

“Or do they take the money while they can?

“In May’s case it (the deal) certainly doesn’t help him given he has that knee injury either so he’ll be starting the season on the back foot which is a shame because he was a real shining light at the back end of this year.

“But this isn’t new to Penrith. It often happens because we produce so many juniors and you can hold on to all of them.”

Imagine all the extra progress you would have made just over the course of the past 12 months if you’d never missed a workout!

2. Outside perspective It’s not uncommon for men to be overly critical on themselves when looking at workout progression (or when looking at their physiques in the mirror).

You may just be your own worst critic. A good training partner will always be able to look at your concerns through fresh eyes and give a healthy second opinion.

3. Healthy competition We humans (especially men, it seems) tend to work harder and perform better in competitive situations. Training with a partner can unlock your competitive drive no matter how chilled out you usually are. There’s nothing like a training partner looking great or making serious progress in the gym to fire up your desire to do better.

One word of caution though: if your partner is

considerably stronger or fitter than you, don’t be sucked in to trying to perform the same workouts.

Your partner won’t progress, and you’ll likely get injured. Instead, try to compete on degrees of

improvement relative to your own current ability.

4. You’ll be able to spot each other Those incorporating weightlifting into their training regime will benefit greatly from having a training partner who can act as a spotter on those big lifts. Depending on the type of training program you are using, reaching or approaching concentric failure on a set may be necessary to make progress. Having someone there to help control the weight means that you can push further than you could alone and have a safer workout.

It’s common to hear people ask for a spot on the bench press, but it shouldn’t stop there: you can get more out of almost all free weight exercises with the help of a spotter.

5. Celebrate successes together One of the greatest parts of having a good training partner is the ability to share each other’s successes. Setting training goals and edging closer and closer to their attainment alongside someone else is very motivating.

It’s also a great idea to plan rewards together. It helps to balance all the hard work with a worthy reward.

Draw fails to dampen Black Cats spirits following breakthrough T20 win Penrith remain in seventeenth position on just two competition points after their Round Four clash away to Northern Districts was restricted to just 32 overs play on day two before rain put a final halt to proceedings but not before the home team had reached 4/135 at Mark Taylor Oval.

The Black Cats, already missing Josh Lalor for the bulk of the season, went into their latest clash minus their other main strike bowler, Ryan Smith after he was ruled out of the clash with tendonitis of the tibia and is no certainty to return for the upcoming two-day home clash against defending champions, Sydney University.

Despite winning the toss and electing to bowl, Penrith’s pace bowlers struggled to make an impact in the greasy conditions, with spinner Luke Hodges easily the pick of the bowlers having taken a first-grade career best 4/26.

Lower grades results were a mixed bag for the Black Cats.

Seconds were pushed back to fourth after a heavy loss against their opponents while fourths run of outs continued as their third loss of the season pushed them down to 16th.

Wins to thirds (ninth) and fifths (third) ensures the Black Cats are in eleventh position overall after four rounds of the club championship.

The previous Sunday was a ground-breaking day for both the men’s and women’s first grade teams, winning their first respective games of the season.

The men recording an empathetic 60 run T20 win over traditional bogey team, Bankstown.

Batting first, Penrith through Ryan Gibson, who backed up his unbeaten century against the Bulldogs just eight days earlier, with a well- constructed 50 (off 35 balls) and Ryan Hackney (40) made a competitive 9-133, which was nonetheless thought to have been at least 20 runs short of par.

But the Black Cats ability to restrict the flow of runs while making early inroads into the strong Bankstown batting line-up ensured a comfortable win for the away team with skipper Michael Castle taking 4/8 and ably assisted by Brenton Loudon 2/11, Luke Hodges 2/26 (plus two catches) while Brent Williams and Michael Collins chimed in with a wicket each.

Next up is a clash next Sunday (Nov 19) away to Western Suburbs.

Just hours earlier, the Lady Cats, having been embarrassed just two weeks earlier, caused the upset of the season to date after defeating defending first grade champions, Gordon at Howell Oval by four wickets.

Having dismissed Gordon for just 87, Penrith in their run chase looked shaky at 6/77 when top scorer Rebecca Cady’s innings ended on 32.

Leading first grade wicket-taker in 2017/18, Luke Hodges, took his best figures to date in the top grade last Saturday - 4/26.

But the experience of Naomi Stalenberg (12 not out) ensured Penrith would win by four wickets.

Having been washed out last week against Bankstown, the Lady Cats face Northern District (home) and Sydney (away) over the next fortnight.

Speaking of Stalenberg, the Sydney Thunder and NSW Breakers middle-order bat scored a breakthrough 114 for the Cricket Australia XI women in their recent day-night tour game against England at Blacktown International Sports Park last weekend that ended in a draw.

The innings ensured player of the match honours for Stalenberg.

In the one T20 game played last Sunday at Howell Oval, Penrith restricted nearest neighbours Blacktown to 7/107 with Jake Wholohan starring with the ball taking 5/25.

But despite having eight balls to spare to chase down a further four runs for victory, the Black Cats were dismissed for 104 runs as they enter Rounds 5 and 6 away to Bankstown.

Penrith have had some pretty handy English imports in recent seasons – Sam Billings, Kishen Vilani and Tom Kohler-Cadmore.

But coach Michael Wholohan has confirmed the club will be making do without an import in 2017/18 despite injuries to Lalor and Smith and the looming unavailability of Ryan Gibson, who has been picked in a Cricket Australia XI to play tour matches against England in Adelaide and Townsville over the coming fortnight.

CAMPBELL-GILLARD MAKES KANGAROOS DEBUT AS MANSOUR RETURNS TO THE FOLD Panthers prop Reagan Campbell-Gillard became Kangaroo number 819 after making his debut in Australia’s big 52-6 win over France in Round Two of the Rugby League World Cup (RLWC) in Canberra last Friday night.

The Windsor Wolves junior, who became Penrith’s 21st Australian representative, didn’t disappointed with his first up effort, as he looks to cement a spot in the 17 for the bigger games that lay ahead for an unbeaten Australian team.

Coach Mal Meninga alluded before the game that Campbell-Gillard, one of four Kangaroo debutants to play last Friday night, was always going to be given an opportunity to play at some point.

“I have made it very clear that I wanted to give all players in the squad a chance to play in the green and gold through the course of the World Cup and we are very much working towards that,” Meninga said.

“That will give me and the coaching staff a good opportunity to see what all of those players can do and will help to shape our squad for the remainder of the tournament.”

Meanwhile winger Josh Mansour made a successful return to the Kangaroos one year and a day on from suffering a ACL knee injury last year that ended his Four Nations campaign.

The return also came just a day after wife Daniella gave birth to their first child, daughter Siana.

In other RLWC Panthers related news: Dallin Watene Zelezniak and Dean Whare have both played one game each for the Kiwis in their impressive unbeaten run going into their Final Round clash with Tonga, whom have allowed hooker Sione Katoa to play in both matches to date.

Fiji have also impressed racking big scores against the USA and Wales, with Panther backrower Bill Kikau instrumental in both wins, having scored three tries to date.

Scotland have had a tough time at this tournament but off-contract centre Lachlan Stein has done well all considering having led the way in metres gained in both their losses to date.

Mason Cerruto has featured at both fullback and on the wing, as Panthers coach Cameron Ciraldo’s Italians face a huge task in needing to defeat Fiji by a sizeable margin to qualify for the quarter finals.

The NRL and RLPA have announced a historic Collective Bargaining Agreement, which will deliver the best deal to players in the game’s history.

The $980 million deal will among other things deliver extra funding for the player retirement fund, additional funding for the elite women’s game, a world class wellbeing and education program, and guaranteed leave entitlements.

No surprise to see Mitch Rein, who had been given permission to look elsewhere for 2018, released from the club to re-unite with his former ISP coach and now NRL head coach on the Gold Coast, Garth Brennan on a two-year deal.

The 27-year-old, who played just five NRL games at Penrith this season is set to join his new club for pre-season training later this week.

One player who hopes to resolve his future soon is centre Tony Satini who remains without a club at this stage despite reported interest from both the Wests Tigers and Newcastle as well as North Queensland feeder club, Mackay Cutters.

Rising star from the Holden Cup squad, backrower Billy Burns has been re-signed by the club until the end of the 2020 season.

The Gold Coast Bulletin has reported that Penrith and Queensland ISC club Central Queensland Capras have formed a partnership which could see some Panthers-contracted players play out of the Intrust Super Cup. The news comes as former Titans Under 20s and Burleigh Bears centre, Connor Broadhurst, prepares to head to Sydney to begin NRL pre-season training with Penrith as part of an opportunity that will also see him switch Queensland Cup allegiances to Central Queensland for 2018 should he not secure a full-time contract with the Panthers.

Coach’s Corner Preseasons Commence

November 1st signals the commencement of preseason training for the majority of NRL clubs along with their junior representative programs in the under 20’s, 18’s and 16’s. Plenty of hard sessions will be on the menu and players are sure to be challenged physically and mentally. But how often are they challenged during this early part of the season tactically through their Rugby League intelligence?

We often talk about the lack of and need for more genuine halfbacks and five eights... But the strive is often to create athletes not play makers. And this is not to ignore the need for all players to have the necessary tactical skill and creativity to break down a defence. Too often coaches place a greater importance on size and athleticism when selecting players, and in some instances this is very relevant especially when you are comparing a like with a like, two players with a similar skill sets but different size and physical attributes, naturally you select the more athletic player.

Halves in particular are a rare commodity. And a very valuable commodity when we look at the impact a quality halves pairing has on your team’s ability to

win games. Despite our knowledge of their value the game continues to attempt to develop halves with the same failing methods. Set structures and the over coaching of junior teams is largely to blame and that players are made to play within these confines from a very young age.

Junior players are exposed to quality coaching from a very young age. This in the right context can be very beneficial. However it can also be severely detrimental when we coach the creativeness out of players in order to fit into a coaching structure or system. It places a greater emphasis on NRL clubs to develop tactical and skill development within these junior rep programs. But more often than not these players are only fed a similar structure or game plan that is cookie cut and copied from the previous seasons Premiership winning team. And the stale cycle continues and the game as a result is becoming more and more predictable!

The winner of Scotland and Samoa will progress and it looks like PNG and Fiji will secure the other two spots in the quarter final stage with Ireland and Italy still slight chances but will need a lot to go their way this weekend, with only Italy having destiny in their own hands.

Australia will play the winner of the Scotland and Samoa match in the quarter final stage next weekend.

This weekends New Zealand and Tonga match looks to be the best game we have seen so far and the Kiwis have really impressed me in their opening two wins over Samoa and Scotland, but the Tongans will be right up for this match and they have the players to cause an upset as noted in this column prior to the tournament starting. England for me have been a little underwhelming but will hopefully improve over the next fortnight as they hope to challenge late in the tournament. This weekend is fairly straight forward but the quarter finals will bring a new excitement to the tournament next weekend!

Western Sydney hosts successful 2017 World Polo Championships

Eight international Men’s Polo teams converged on Richmond in October, all intent on claiming the 2017 World Polo Championships title.

Reigning champions Chile were highly favoured but the strong contingent of teams at the Championships also included Argentina, England, USA, New Zealand, India, Spain and Australia.

The massive crowds attending the event over the eight days delighted event organisers, highlighted by over 10,000 spectators flocking through the

gates on the first day.

Argentina would ultimately take out the Championships, with an 8-7 win over Chile in the Final, whilst England overcame USA 6-5 in the playoff for third position.

The Australian team were hoping to feature in the top placings but losses to Argentina (9 - 5 1/2) and the USA (7 5), plus a narrow 9 - 8 win over Spain in the preliminary rounds would result in the Aussies missing the playoffs.

Along with seven days of highquality Polo, the hordes of fans were also treated to Showjumping, Rodeo, sculptures, music entertainers and

more during an action-packed week.

World Championships host Peter Higgins was quoted in local media, stating “FIP President Nicholas Colquhoun-Denvers and FIP CEO Alejandro Taylor praised the Sydney Polo Club as the best venue yet of any international polo championship.

“They (Colquhoun-Denver and Taylor) said it’s (Richmond) the most organised and professional polo championship they have attended,” said Mr Higgins.

While it’s supposed to be the off-season of the NRL rugby league continues to find its way onto the front and back pages of all major publications here in Sydney.

The latest headline, shocking most, is of Panthers skipper Matt Moylan and Cronulla Sharks playmaker James Maloney involving a complete swap for the two. Moylan to Sharks, Maloney to the Panthers for the next 3 seasons. Wow. At the time of submitting this column (Monday lunch) a deal had yet to be ‘officially’ struck but most in the know are taking it as a given that both players will be in each other’s Jersey come 2018. There has been a recurring rumour throughout 2017 that Moylan and coach Griffin have an on-going difference of opinion. This happens in footy.

While it is always sad seeing a local junior fly-the-coop unfortunately life has to go on. Let’s just say that the deal is done. What are the Panther faithful getting with James Maloney landing at the foot of the mountains? First of all you’re getting a winner. You’re also getting a competitor in the Steve Carter mould who can also kick goals at an extremely high percentage. You’re also getting an amazing foil for young Nathan Cleary, who for much of last season was asked on most occasions to go it alone in the running of the football team.

Maloney has an immediate impact at any club he plays for. He did it somewhat in Melbourne, he did it in New Zealand, he did it at the Roosters and he did it

While there will be a percentage of Panther fans somewhat sad, me being one of them, that Matty Moylan couldn’t quite find the happiness he wanted in Penrith, the other percentage of fans should be excited that Maloney, at only 31 and with a good 4 or 5 years of constructive footy left in him, has decided that the Panthers are the club he wants to next make an immediate impact at.

Welcome aboard “Jimmy”, enjoy your stay here in the greater west, it’s a fantastic place to play and live!!

And another thing.....

It would be remiss of me not to mention how much I’m enjoying the current Rugby League World Cup. Sure there have been blow-out scores and it’s Australia’s comp to lose. But it’s been the side-notes that have impressed most: like each nations anthems and war cries! Like only one referee on the field. Like the free flowing footy on display without the obvious sense of over adjudicating.

Like the passion displayed by the minnows of the rugby league world.

There’s lots to like and for those naysayers who always find something to complain about I have a simple cure for your pain. DON’T WATCH IT!!
