T

he Premier’s Reading Challenge marks its 21st anniversary with children encouraged to join the party - by reading lots of books!

The Challenge aims to encourage a love of reading for leisure and pleasure in students, and to enable them to experience quality literature.

First started in 2002, the Challenge has grown in both student participation and completion numbers every year since its inception.

Premier Dominic Perrottet said despite disruptions from COVID-19 in 2021, participation in the Challenge was up almost 3 per cent (440,000 students) with individual books read reaching almost 9 million.

“It’s wonderful to see that the Challenge continues to grow, encouraging generations to enjoy reading,” Mr Perrottet said.

“The challenge encourages students to extend reading beyond the classroom where they can read for pleasure and knowledge.”

Minister for Education and Early Learning Sarah Mitchell said this year’s motto “stories that stay with you” was very suitable following the years we have had.

“Reading is so beneficial for students’ lives, it sharpens their knowledge and strengthens writing and vocabulary – but just as importantly it makes for happier, more creative kids who take that with them into adulthood,” Ms Mitchell said.

“Reading is a gift that unlocks future success for students. I’m excited for this year’s challenge to start.”

The Premier’s Reading Challenge began on Monday, 28 February and is open for student entries until Friday, 19 August. Students from government, independent, Catholic and home schools in Kindergarten to Year 10 can participate.

ell 2022 is off to a cracking start isn’t it?

The curtains opened to a massive wave of omicron cases. If you’ve been lucky enough to avoid contracting it, congratulations because you’ve skipped your way through a minefield. Even Scomo couldn’t dodge it.

Speaking of leaders, we’ve got a raving narcissist on the other side of the world threatening to end it - a maniac with no regard for human life but unfortunately a whole lot of power. The scenes unfolding daily in Ukraine are absolutely heart-breaking. It is really hard to believe that this could happen these days, but happening it is, with more detailed footage than ever seen before.

If that wasn’t enough, now we have bucketing rain that just never lets up causing havoc on our roads and rivers. The dam spilled over this week, the river is rising and there is a deluge of water on the roads and land around us. At the time of going to print things were not looking great around the Penrith area.

Not the start of the year we hoped for, by any stretch of the imagination.

I really feel for the kids of today. It wasn’t that long ago that it seemed they were the generation that got everything they wished for at the click of their fingers, didn’t have to want or wait for anything, were never exposed to challenges or disappointment.

Well that sure changed.

The Covid lock-down Aussie generation knows all about waiting, wanting and the challenges of restricted living. It is important to keep an extra eye on their welfare, because now they are also exposed to the visions of war.

I have vivid memories from my own childhood of peeping through my fingers at the TV footage of the Falklands War and being absolutely terrified. The footage back then was nothing like what is shown now either. These days everyone who has a mobile phone is a photographer. Anyone can take video and record really horrific things and show them.

Our kids are potentially exposed to vision that could haunt them forever.

So we really should make a concentrated effort to shield them from all the unwanted gifts that 2022 is insisting on giving.

Turn the TV off when it doesn’t need to be on, and keep social media time to a minimum. Be extra careful when chatting about the events of the world in front of very young and vulnerable sets of ears.

There’s a lot of positives about the month of March that we ourselves can focus on, and in turn get our kids excited about.

International Women’s Day is an opportunity to recognise and celebrate the incredible achievements of females, especially our local ones.

We have an incredible amount of successful business women in the Penrith area. We’ve also go a lot of female emergency service workers, charity champions and high achievers in sport. A

s our city grows and becomes more urbanised, Penrith City Council is committed to cooling our city and reducing heat impacts from the urban environment to provide our community with a liveable, active and healthy lifestyle throughout summer.

Nearly every summer, Penrith records the hottest temperatures in Sydney where the mercury can rise above 45 degrees. On 4 January 2020, Penrith was officially the hottest place on Earth with a temperature of 48.9 degrees. It broke a Bureau of Meteorology temperature record that had been held since 1939.

Penrith Mayor Tricia Hitchen said the impacts of urban heat and the need to implement smart strategies to combat scorching hot summers are paramount.

“As urban development occurs, natural land and vegetation is being replaced with roads, car parks and buildings. These hard surfaces absorb and radiate much more heat and leave little moisture in the ground,” Cr Hitchen said.

“There’s less opportunity for cooling like it would in a natural landscape.

“Then there’s waste air from air conditioners and heat from vehicle engines. When combined with absorbed heat, it makes urban areas much hotter becoming islands of heat known as the urban heat island effect.”

Council is proposing to amend the Penrith Local Environmental Plan (LEP) 2010 to introduce a new clause to ensure the mitigation of the urban heat island effect is considered. This clause would apply to all new development in residential, business, industrial, special purpose, recreation, rural villages and Environmental Living zones.

Council’s Urban Heat Planning Controls Package is on public exhibition until Monday, 7

March 2022. Council is asking the community to provide feedback and comments by visiting www. yoursaypenrith.com.au/urbanheat or email cityplanning@penrith. city.

Council is also exhibiting a Draft Amendment to the Penrith Development Control Plan (DCP) 2014 that proposes to introduce a new Urban Heat chapter.

The chapter focuses on design responses found to have a significant effect on reducing the impacts of the urban heat island effect. By proposing cool roof colours and materials to reduce heat absorption and increase reflectivity, cooling through building design and optimising mechanical heating and cooling.

There will also be controls to support the retention of existing trees and planting new trees, with a focus on tree numbers, species, irrigation and soil volume.

The Urban Heat Planning Controls Package is complimented by programs being delivered under Council’s Cooling the City Strategy and Resilient Penrith Action Plan. Including advocacy to the State Government through the Planning for Heat Discussion Paper, our Cooling the City video series and Beat the Heat programs to build the capacity of our community in adapting to heat.

Another important contribution to cooling our city is greening and tree planting, with Council planting trees in both parks and streets in some of our hottest and most vulnerable suburbs,.

“Through effective planning design and building measures, we aim to cool our city, making our buildings and outdoor spaces more comfortable, particularly during summer, for people living and working in our City,” Cr Hitchen said.

local news Senator Marise Payne becomes longest-serving female Senator

L

ocal Senator and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Minister for Women, Senator the Hon Marise Payne, has become the longest-serving female Senator in Australian history.

Senator Payne achieved the milestone having now served in the Senate for over 24 years and overtaking the record set by West Australian Senator Dame ​​Dorothy Tangney, who was first elected in 1943.

Senator Payne was appointed to the Senate in 1997, aged 32, six years after her first attempt to get elected. In 2015, Senator Payne became the first woman to be appointed as Minister for Defence.

In her first speech as Defence Minister, Senator Payne said she wanted to be judged on her performance, not her gender.

Reflecting on her parliamentary career, Senator Payne encouraged more women and girls to consider public service.

“Politics needs women of all backgrounds and political views,” Senator Payne said.

“It doesn’t matter which party you join or no party at all: I will always encourage as many women and girls as possible to get involved.”

Prime Minister Scott Morrison congratulated Senator Payne on her milestone in Parliament.

“This is an extraordinary achievement and I think it is an enormous encouragement to all women of this country and young girls in this country,” the Prime Minister said.

Under Senator Payne’s leadership,

there are now more women in Cabinet than at any time in Australia’s history.

In 2021, Marise delivered $1.1 billion for women’s safety, the largest single Commonwealth investment in women’s safety in a federal budget.

As Minister for Foreign Affairs, Senator Payne attended the first ever leaders-level Quad between Australia, the United States, India and Japan, and worked to establish the creation of an enhanced trilateral security partnership known as AUKUS, which significantly deepens cooperation on a range of emerging security and defence capabilities.

Senator Payne has spent the entirety of her Senate career based at Parramatta, the gateway to Western Sydney, and lives in Mulgoa, south of Penrith.

hildren from vulnerable backgrounds or whose parents work as frontline workers are the focus of a pilot program aimed at providing better access to quality vacation care.

Grants of up to $30,000 have assisted services to provide engaging opportunities like sports and nutrition programs, excursions, cooking and art workshops. Member for Mulgoa, Tanya Davies said vacation care services play a vital role in meeting the needs of our community.

“Students have worked so hard over the last few terms at school and they deserve to have fun and entertaining programs during their holiday break,” Mrs Davies said.

“I am so pleased to know one service in Mulgoa that has benefitted from these vacation grants.”

The NSW Government Vacation Care Grant has been awarded to St Clair OOSH who have received $10,000 to support them in providing the care needed for the children who attend the centre.

Minister for Education Sarah Mitchell said the funding will allow services to provide experiences for students through incursions and excursions, as well as upgrades to equipment, resources and transport.

“This service is crucial for parents and carers who may not be able to get time off work to look after their children during school holidays,” Ms Mitchell said.

Return and earn hits 7 billion containers returned milestone

M

ore than $700 million in container refunds have now been earned by NSW residents through Return and Earn as the State reaches the 7 billion drink container mark.

Environment Minister James Griffin said Return and Earn has well and truly become part of life in New South Wales with 78 per cent of adults having participated and two-thirds of participants doing so once a month or more.

“Return and Earn is a triumph because it hits that sweet spot of improving our environment and delivering direct economic wins to the community,” Mr Griffin said.

“Along the way, the Return and Earn network has achieved a 52 per cent reduction in the volume of drink

container litter in NSW and delivered more than 625,000 tonnes in materials recycled.”

“Not only is it having a measurable environmental impact with two in every three containers supplied in NSW redeemed through the scheme

for recycling, Return and Earn has also become a stalwart of community fundraising activities in NSW. “More than $30 million has already been raised for charities such as PCYC NSW, the Starlight Foundation and community groups via donations

and fees since the scheme started.

“It’s encouraging that thousands of schools, community groups, charities and sporting clubs are making Return and Earn the new ‘sausage sizzle’, helping raise much needed funds for their own projects and causes.

“Return and Earn is an inspiring example of how small changes to our routine can have a significant collective impact.”

Return and Earn is a partnership between the NSW Government, scheme coordinator Exchange for Change and network operator TOMRA Cleanaway. Launched in December 2017 it has become the state’s largest litter initiative.

The Caring Hearts Community Quilters

A

iring of the Quilts will return because the Quilters here in the West and beyond have requested that we continue, at the historic Arms of Australia Inn, where they can enjoy walking among the colourful quilts in the great outdoors.

The Caring Hearts Community Quilters have been stitching their kind of magic into quilts for the Palliative Care patients in the Penrith, Hawkesbury and Blue Mountains area now for 21 years. They have just delivered quilts to the Penrith Women’s Shelter for the children, and they don’t stop there, they also made and delivered quilts to children in need in remote towns in New South Wales and the needy in their local community. The ladies take pride in the knowledge that they are truly doing something they love whilst bringing joy and comfort to those that receive them at the same time.

Traditionally, quilt airings were held in Spring as a method of keeping quilts fresh. Today quilt airing is a chance for the quilter to exhibit their work, and

to bring quilters together in a social gathering. The ladies of The Caring Hearts Community Quilters

will hold the Airing of the Quilts in the Arms of Australian Inn Museum, one of the Penrith regions most historic locations, which provides a beautiful backdrop for these colourful quilts.

The ladies hope you will support them again this year as this is their annual fundraising event to enable them to continue their work. On the day there will be a Trading table, Plant Stall, hand made gifts, Devonshire Teas, Sausage Sizzle and a beautiful raffle quilt and the money raised will go to Motor Neurone Disease.

he Penrith community are encouraged to “Have Your Say” on ideas for the NSW Government’s new $5 billion WestInvest program that will fund transformational infrastructure projects in Western Sydney.

The NSW Government is delivering WestInvest to rejuvenate local communities and improve liveability in Western Sydney.

The new $5 billion program will fund transformational infrastructure projects that support community amenity and economic recovery, making a real difference to life in Penrith, as it comprises some of the 15 eligible West and South-West Sydney Local Government Areas.

Minister for Western Sydney Stuart Ayres said WestInvest would deliver better local facilities, more open spaces and convenient services all close to home.

“Western Sydney is already an incredible place to live – it is diverse and growing – WestInvest is about securing the best quality of life for families and making every part of Western Sydney a great place to live,” Mr Ayres said.

“This isn’t business as usual funding – WestInvest is designed to deliver real change at a community level. It will

help to rejuvenate local communities with revitalised high streets, improved parks, new sporting fields, more pools, better local traffic flow and active transport links, plus much more.

“But WestInvest needs everyone’s input – we are already working with councils and government departments for projects that can be delivered quickly and effectively, but we need local communities and individuals to have their say because you know best which projects will most improve your

neighbourhoods.”

Penrith City Council Mayor Tricia Hitchen welcomed the announcement and said “I am delighted to see the NSW Govermnent is committed to continued investment into Penrith which ensures our city is a great place to live, work and play.”

WestInvest will allocate funding for future projects across six areas: • parks, urban spaces and green space; • enhancing community

infrastructure such as local sporting grounds; • modernising local schools; • creating and enhancing arts and cultural facilities; • revitalising high-streets; • local traffic programs.

The $5 billion WestInvest Fund is broken down as follows: • $3 billion for NSW Government agencies to deliver transformational projects; • $2 billion for high priority community projects; - $1.6 billion allocated to community groups, non-government organisations, and local councils; - Up to $400m allocated directly to the 15 local councils.

The allocation of all $5 billion will be informed by the community “Have Your Say” process.

WestInvest will be available to 15 local government areas in Sydney: Blacktown, Blue Mountains, Burwood, Camden, Campbelltown, CanterburyBankstown, Cumberland, Fairfield, Hawkesbury, The Hills, Liverpool, Parramatta, Penrith, Strathfield and Wollondilly.

or the first time in three years, Rotarians will come together at the 2022 Rotary District 9685 Conference at the Novotel West HQ, Rooty Hill, to celebrate how they Serve to Change Lives.

Rotarians were surveyed and the feedback influenced the decision to meet for a one-day only event on Saturday 19th March, preceded by a Bollywood-themed Gala Dinner on the Friday night (18th March).

he Morrison Government has provided an additional $240,000 for the Penrith Women’s Health Centre to support women and children experiencing family and domestic violence in Lindsay.

Minister for Women’s Safety Anne Ruston said the extra funding allows more women to connect with specialised services that would help them rebuild their lives free from violence.

“The Health Centre would use this funding to employ two additional specialised family and domestic violence caseworkers and buy security equipment to ensure that women visiting the centre are safe and feel safe,” Minister Ruston said Federal Member for Lindsay Melissa McIntosh visited the team at the Penrith Women’s Health Centre with the Minister for Home Affairs, Karen Andrews, to discuss how this additional funding helps women and children receive the support they need to get back on their feet.

“The staff at the health centre have worked incredibly hard throughout the pandemic, when sadly we know there was an increase in cases of domestic and family violence,” Ms McIntosh said.

“Penrith Women’s Health Centre has

provided thousands of consultations to women, with a range of health and wellbeing services including counselling, legal support, massage therapy and female health services.

“Having another two specialised domestic and family violence caseworkers allows more women in our community to receive targeted and individualised support.

“The Penrith Women’s Health Centre also helps educate women and children to become safer and more resilient in emergencies and connects

them to other support services.”

The Morrison Government has provided a total of $720,000 to the Penrith Women’s Centre over four years.

The Morrison Government is investing a record $1.1 billion from the 2021-22 Budget to improve outcomes for women’s safety.

A Gift to the Queen from Nepean Men’s Shed

n recent months, the Nepean Men’s Shed undertook a special project on behalf of her Excellency the Honourable Margaret Beazley AC QC, Governor of NSW. On Friday 25th February, the Governor visited the Nepean Men’s Shed, where she thanked the members for making the presentation box, which now also holds a special bottle of gin.

This gift was personally delivered to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth for her Platinum Jubilee, on behalf of the people of NSW. At the time of making the box, the members of the Men’s Shed were not aware of the significance of the presentation box and only became aware following the Governor’s visit to Penrith.

The origins of the box began with a request for its creation back in 2020, after a 70-year-old Pin Oak tree (Quercus palustris) growing in the grounds of Government House was blown over in a storm. A piece of this tree was sent to the Nepean Men’s Shed, where several skilled members worked their magic.

A special thank you to Farshid Mahmoudi, Rodney Esdaile and Ray Blisset, plus all those who helped make this special gift.

New Sensory Activity Centre opens in Penrith

t’s been something that the community of Penrith has been desperately seeking – its very own recreational facility for people of all abilities. Recently opening its door to the public, Share My Ability, western Sydney’s newest Sensory Activity Centre, provides a safe space for people of all ages to enjoy and have fun in a supported environment.

Purpose built for inclusion and fun, Share My Ability is owned and operated by NADO (Nepean Area Disabilities Organisation), a registered NDIS provider that has over 40 years of experience within the disability sector.

The new centre provides the local community of Penrith and surrounding areas a recreational space that is inclusive, engaging and interactive. The stateof-the-art equipment is accessible to all abilities and features include a Liberty Swing, Interactive Projector, Inflatable Bag-jump, Sensory Room, Wheelchair Spin, Climbing Wall and an onsite Sensory Store and Cafe.

NDIS and Allied Health support services are also available at the centre and include both Physiotherapy and Diversionary Therapy sessions which are available to the public.

The official opening of the centre was held on Saturday 26th February, with attendees including Stuart Ayres MP and Deputy Mayor of Penrith John Thain, together with local families and participants.

ove is everywhere on Valentine’s Day! The Royce Retirement Living in Penrith believes that love should be celebrated no matter the age or circumstances.

Last month on February 14, the staff joined forces to create magical moments for eight couples residing at The Royce Aged Care.

Proving that love knows no bounds, residents (all of whom have been married for at least 39 years) were treated to a scrumptious lunch prepared by their in-house chef. Accompanied by music and laughter, the residents reminisced the yesteryears with fondness and love.

The staff made sure to make the lunch date a surprise, the residents were ushered to a lounge area-turnedrestaurant by the creative team; tables and chairs were set elegantly, balloons and wall decors complemented the mood we were trying to create. The air quickly turned emotional when residents arrived and were taken back to lunch/dinner dates they used to have in their younger years. Wedding photos were placed on top of each table which alone started loving memories of the past. One can feel the commitment

of the couples towards each other as stories of hardships and milestones resonate around.

Everyone’s welcomed with heart shaped butter cookies specially baked by one of the staff, red/white wine and beer started flowing as conversations did. The residents were tempted with either beef stroganoff with mashed potato and roast veggies or a quiche topped with tomato sauce accompanied with peas, corn and other vegetables.

Coming home: Nepean-born doctor returns to begin career

Dr Josie Walker is proud to begin her medical career at the hospital where she was born.

W

orking at Nepean Hospital is a dream come true for new medical intern, Dr Josephine Walker.

Born at the hospital in 1994, Dr Walker says she recalls being 11 years old and declaring to her parents that she wanted to be a doctor at Nepean Hospital.

“I know it’s corny, but it really is a dream come true,” Dr Walker says. “I’ve always wanted to be a doctor at Nepean Hospital. I feel so relaxed and happy here. I feel like I’ve come home.”

When choosing where to gain the valuable skills and training she’ll need as a doctor, Dr Walker says Nepean Hospital was top choice.

“Nepean is a teaching hospital. It offers a really great learning experience and it’s just a fantastic place to be. The team in the hospital is amazing and supportive,” Dr Walker says.

She says learning in brand new facilities at the new Nepean Hospital tower, opening in the coming months, also presents an exciting opportunity for junior medical officers.

Dr Walker’s first rotation at Nepean Hospital is surgery with the Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) team.

From there the rotations will have her working in geriatrics, the emergency department and orthopaedics.

While she feels more inclined to specialise in

medicine, Dr Walker says her surgery rotations offer an exciting chance to get out of her comfort zone.

“I’m very interested in palliative care and oncology. I’d love to do that at Nepean but I’m still very open-minded. We’ll see what life throws at me.”

For now, Dr Walker is excited to be putting her studies into practice, supporting and caring for the community she loves during this challenging and important time.

“Working in a pandemic is a once in a lifetime situation. I’m sure I’ll be able to tell my grandkids one day about how I fought on the frontline,” she says.

Women today: we’ve come a long way

M

arch 8 is International Women’s Day; a day for celebrating and applauding the progression and greatest achievements by women across the globe.

And while some countries have shown little improvement, life for women in Australia has changed dramatically over the decades.

Some of us are old enough to have lived through the changes, but even then we tend to forget how different it was until we are reminded.

If you are a married person now, who like me, grew up in the seventies and eighties, chances are your parent’s marriage, relationship and lifestyle was very different to how yours is in 2021.

For instance, my mother didn’t work for the first 15 years of my life, she didn’t drive and after we’d been patted off to school, she spent the day cleaning and preparing for our return. She’d also be making herself beautiful for my father’s return from work.

Although she’d only been at home all day she’d be wearing an A-line mini skirt and blouse, high heels and she’d have rollers in her hair in readiness for his arrival. She served up the obligatory meat and three veg at precisely 6 o’clock on the dot so it would be piping hot when Dad walked in the door.

By stark contrast, I work, I drive and if I was at home all day I’d probably be in my pyjamas.

My husband Greg and I share the cooking duties, and more often than not, if it’s my turn we are getting Indian or Chinese home delivered.

But in my mother’s heyday, and her mother’s before her, a woman’s place was in the kitchen.

A line springs to mind from the old song from Mary Poppins, Sister Suffragettes: ‘No more the meek and mild subservient we; we’re fighting for our rights, militantly.’

And fight they did!

It is somewhat hard to imagine now, a world where women were not allowed to vote.

And although we were leaders of sorts by being the second country to “allow” it (hello New Zealand #1) we didn’t allow Aboriginal women to vote until much later. On that note, Aboriginal men couldn’t vote either, but that’s another story for another day.

Women were once not allowed to open a bank account without their husband’s permission; so they couldn’t take out a loan or have access to their own savings. My head hurts just typing this!

Far less women had jobs or any income, so they were totally reliant on their husband to survive. And prior to the contraceptive pill being introduced, they had little choice on how their life would be played out.

Did you know that we once lived in times where if you were a female and enjoyed an alcoholic beverage, you’d be sat in a “Ladies Lounge” at the pub because women were banned from entering the public bar?

Many “dates” back in the day consisted of the lady sitting in a tiny room of the pub knitting her beau a scarf, along with several other girlfriends doing the same, while the blokes they hoped to marry drank up a storm in the main bar.

Can you imagine!

Thank goodness those days are gone and on International Womens Day it is an opportune time to reflect on how far we’ve come - because it is proof that change can and does happen.

As mentioned above, New Zealand was the first nation to give women the right to vote, but not to stand, in 1893. Australia became the first country in the world to give most women the right to vote and the right to stand for the Commonwealth Parliament. It wasn’t until 1943 that the first woman was elected.

These days more and more females are being elected to representative roles. We have women who hold elected positions in Councils, as Mayors, as state Members of Parliament, Federal Members of Parliament, Senators and also Ministers.

As time goes on, equality between the sexes appears more achievable than ever before.

Let’s hope some of passion and drive that eventuated in previous changes can be captured. We need it to push for some important changes for the future - such as across the board pay equality, safety in the workplace and stamping out domestic violence.

Celebrating the Nepean region’s female success stories on International Women’s Day

A Penrith local, Tricia is a highly decorated former NSW Police Chief Inspector. Tricia spent all of her Police Service working in the outer western suburbs giving her a unique understanding of the difficulties faced by many families in this area. After retiring from the Police Force through injury Tricia continued her public service when she was elected to Penrith City Council in 2012 and again in 2016.

Married with three children, Tricia and her husband Trevor run a family owned removals and storage business, which has operated in the Penrith area for over 60 years.

A founding member of the Aussies for Orphans charity, Tricia has served on the Board of a number of local organisations including the Nepean Medical Research Foundation, Ripples, CBD Corp, St Marys Town Centre Board and The Haven.

The mother of a special needs child, Tricia is a strong advocate for disabilities, accessibility and equity and was successful in her campaign to have Council open an Adult Change Room in the Penrith CBD and one in St Marys.

Tricia also served as Deputy Mayor in 2017 and 2018.

MARLENE SHIPLEY Marlene Shipley is the CEO of the very popular St Marys Diggers & Band Club and recently elected Councillor in the East Ward .

Marlene has worked in the community for 29 years.

She was appointed as the CEO of the Band Club in 2007, and then assumed the role of CEO in 2019 for the newly merged club St Marys Diggers & Band Club.

“Driven by the community, I will continue to contribute and give back where I can”, Mrs Shipley said.

“For 28 years I’ve worked in St Marys. I enjoy the people, culture, the stories and the history. Often, I will sit with our club members and listen to the many stories that they have from their many years of living in St Marys,” Marlene said.

Even though the Bandy has always kept her busy, Mrs Shipley always finds time for others. Volunteering on numerous boards allows her to spread her wings and gain more experience in other fields within the business community.

“There are a lot of good people in our local community and spending time with them the way I do, I find extremely rewarding, especially being able to marry them,” she said.

In 2016 Mrs Shipley became an authorised marriage celebrant, simply because she loves people and loves to share in their stories.

Mrs Shipley is a mum of three adult children and grandmother to six beautiful grandchildren.

Currently Marlene is a member of the St Marys Town Centre Corporation.

GAI HAWTHORN One leading local lady who has managed to make an impressive mark in just ten years is Penrith CBD Corporation’s CEO, Gai Hawthorn. Anyone who has called in at the CBD headquarters in High Street will agree that it is simply amazing that such an enormous amount of work gets pumped out of her tiny office. The businesses in Penrith have an amazing resource at hand to help them achieve great success, and that is Gai. Belinda McMartin

MA Museum Studies, BA (HON) History/Heritage (University of Sydney)

Since May 2020 Belinda has been the CEO of the Museum of Fire and has overseen an intense period of uncertainty as the pandemic has forced the Museum to close its doors numerous times. Despite this Belinda has led a dedicated team, whose commitment to developing the Museum into a popular tourist attraction, successful local business and well-respected heritage organisation has proved successful.

With new ideas and approaches Belinda has overseen a change in the Museum’s direction which has proved to be very successful.

Belinda has utilised her background in small Museums and love of heritage to inspire those around her to keep striving to make the Museum a must-visit location.

Belinda has worked in the Museum sector for over a decade with previous positions including the role of Senior Heritage and Research Officer with the Museum of Fire (2015-2019) and five years as a Curator at the Bradman Museum in Bowral. At the time Belinda was asked to return to the Museum of Fire to become CEO she was working as the head of the Australian Society of Anaesthetists (ASA) heritage department.

In 2010 Belinda completed her History Honours Thesis at the University of Sydney on the theme Cricket in America, a Study of British Imperialism 1840-1925 and it was during her studies that Belinda developed a love of heritage completing both a Major in History and Heritage Studies as an undergraduate before subsequently undertaking a Master of Museum Studies, all at the University of Sydney.

In her time as a Museum professional Belinda has overseen countless new exhibits both in house and at partner organisation.

She has also overseen over fifty heritage works for the Museum’s heritage partner Fire and Rescue NSW and looks forward to seeing what the team at the Museum can achieve into the future.

Noela McIntosh

Administor, Dynamic Business Collaborators Finalist in Strategic Connector of the Year Award for WWA

Being a person of integrity and and innovation, Ms Noela McIntosh, resident of St Marys, has intensive experience in communication and interpersonal skills. Noela has assisted many people across multiple industries.

For 12 years Noela conducted a Creative Writing Course for men and women at St Marys Community Centre. Their works of poems and stories were compiled in an Anthology which is in Penrith Library and also the State Library as it was recognised as a community effort.

From running a home business Noela became Administrator of a network of like-minded business owners to create strategic alliance for win-win relationships to showcase their expertise in front of potential clients and customers. This brought value and benefits to all participants.

It not only changed her life, it created opportunities that changed people’s businesses to maintain a competitive advantage in a friendly caring atmosphere. The network is named Dynamic Business Collaborators and is based in Blacktown City.

Two outstanding events to inspire women were successfully conducted with the result that women were able to grow not only themselves but their business too. This structure form succeeded to be recognised by Women with Altitude as a Finalist in the Strategic Connector of the Year. With Covid-19 here, the normal face to face was transferred to Zoom meetings with assistance from an International Student and plans are being made for a face-to-face Small Business Month in March. Assistance is given from Western Sydney Business Connect which is highly valued.

ON THE My season 2022 predicted ladder! with MARK GEYER

H

ere we go again! Another rugby league season is just about upon us.

And while some clubs have been more active than their counterparts in the recruitment circles, and some clubs ‘trial’ form has been better than others, when there’s 2 points on the offer is when we see the gun teams push that accelerator flat to the boards. With that here’s my 2022 predicted finish on the ladder for every team once the season proper has concluded.

1. Roosters - Finished 5th last year and were hit with the worse cases of bad luck ever recorded in the NRL, this year I think they’ll be minor premiers.

2. Panthers - Premiers last season, I have them making their 3rd grand final in a row taking on the Roosters. Their underwhelming trial game against the Eels can’t be over analysed.

3. Melbourne - last years’ minor premiers will always be there or abouts while Craig Bellamy is in control.

4. Manly - they poured home on the back of Tommy Turbo last year to finish 4th. I think they’ll do the same thing this year.

5. Eels - finished 6th last season and one gets the feeling that if not this year then when for the mighty Eels?

6. Souths - finished 3rd last year, but this season without Adam Reynolds and without Wayne Bennett I think we may see the Rabbits drop a couple of rungs on the ladder.

7. Sharks - finished 9th last year. The Sharks are a team that most think will improve this season, I agree with most.

8. Titans - they finished 8th last year and were only a pass away of disposing

of the Roosters. The Titans are a good team to watch.

9. Warriors - finishing 12th last year I feel the Shaun Johnson inspired Warriors could be one of the real danger teams in this season’s competition.

10. Raiders - they finished 10th last year and I have them missing finals footy and staying exactly where they ended last year.

11. Bulldogs - After finishing 2021 last anything north is a bonus. But with what they’ve bought and Gus Gould now on board the pressure is already on Trent Barrett’s doggies.

12. Broncos - They ended last year in 14th position so I’ve got them going up a couple of spots. On the back of Adam Reynolds, Payne Haas, and Katoni Staggs.

13. Dragons - finished last season with 8 straight losses after the now infamous ‘BBQ gate”. Could be another danger team this year.

14. Knights - I don’t know what it is but I just get a feeling the Newcastle Knights may be in for a long year. Captain Kayln Ponga has to be near the best player in the comp for them to have any success.

15. Tigers - the Tiges unfortunately will be without their best player, Adam Douhei for half of the season. Jackson Hastings although could be one of the better 2022 signings.

16. Cowboys - 15th last year and I’m predicting them to go one worse this year to claim the wooden spoon of 2022.

sk any local what the highlight of 2021 was and odds on they’ll say the Panthers Grand Final win. It had all the nail-biting excitement we’d hoped for over many years - except that we couldn’t be there!

And although many of us decorated our homes and sat in our loungerooms rigged out in Panther gear, nothing could quite disguise the disappointment that we couldn’t be at the game to cheer on our boys.

It was obvious that Nathan Cleary understands this and feels it too, when he spoke recently about the season ahead.

Season 2022 will be about new opportunity, he said.

“It’s always a shame to lose the people that we did, you know, like Burto and Capes and all that.

They were a big part of this team,” Nathan said.

“But, losing them gives other people opportunities. I’m really excited for that, there is a lot of young talent here.

“Everyone has really bought in to the culture and what we want to do. I’m looking forward to seeing different people get opportunities this year.”

Nathan’s thoughts on how the team would perform in 2022 left nobody guessing.

“We’re hungrier than ever to be honest,” he said, “and been really lucky to have two good years as a group.

“Obviously that first year we had the disappointment of the loss and were luckily enough last year to get a win. I definitely know what I prefer and where I want to be come the end of the season.

“There’s a common feeling among the group that we can get a lot better.”

Clearly the thing that excites Nathan most about 2022 is being able to reconnect with home-town fans.

“I can’t wait to be out there in front of all our fans in Penrith!” he said.

“They did it pretty tough last year in lock down - I honestly can’t wait!”

NRL Season Preview 2022

I

n a week’s time our hometown Penrith Panthers will begin the task of attempting to defend their 2021 Premiership. How have the Panthers balanced enjoying the moment while retaining a hunger to succeed? This is a defining question which will be answered as the season progresses.

In 2021 I was very confident in my predictions, having 7 of the Top 8 with only the Raiders letting me down, I also predicted a Panthers Vs Rabbitohs Grand Final. 2022 feels less predictable with some significant roster and coaching changes.

Broncos – Adam Reynolds arrives which will solidify the halfback position, but some huge questions remain at five eighth, fullback and hooker. The Broncos look sharp at centre with Staggs and Farnworth and the forward pack looks like it will compete on a weekly basis. Can Kevin Walters prove he is the man to push the Broncos back into the Finals.

Bulldogs – The Bulldogs have no doubt purchased well but this is not measurement for potential success. We have seen clubs every season begin with optimism, but have it fall apart particularly when their depth is tested. The Bulldogs have a starting 13 capable of playing Finals. But have they created enough quality depth to compliment it?

Cowboys – Todd Payton created some ripples in 2021 and at times distracted his team with comments in public forums. A lot of what the Cowboys needed they were unable to gain in free agency and I am predicting them to struggle again in 2022.

Dragons – They have given fans of the Red V reason for optimism heading into the new season.

Sloan, Sullivan and Amone all look like long term NRL players in key positions. The issue will be consistency for these young players and whether they can generate enough from Ben Hunt and Andrew McCullough from a creativity perspective.

Eels – This roster’s last dance at a title. Throw in a formidable home ground, good coach and a spine which is improving each season. The final ingredient is delivering consistently in big matches and winning games at the pointy end of the season. Is 2022 the year that comes to fruition?

Knights – The losses of Brailey to injury and Pearce to France in my opinion will cripple the Knights chances in 2022. They will no doubt try hard, and they have a solid forward pack along with the talent of Ponga. But I do not see them troubling the scorers this season.

Panthers – They have seen a few key men go to other clubs, and a few more will roll out at the end of 2022. But the club is full of talented juniors awaiting an opportunity. The question for me revolves around hunger, and I believe these Panthers will be just as hungry as they were in 2021.

They will want to perform well at home and win a competition in Sydney, last season’s premiership celebrations were somewhat disconnected from our community and the Panthers’ fan base. I also firmly believe they won last year’s competition without hitting their best form. Let’s hope we see the Panthers really get going in 2022.

Rabbitohs – They undervalued the halfback position enough to let Reynolds walk. This decision will be justified if his successors can produce the same results. Anything less than a finals appearance will have both the club and new coach Demetriou having to answer some tough questions.

Raiders – They have replaced the void at halfback with Fogarty, who will greatly assist Wighton in playing his natural game without having to push the team around the park, which goes against every natural inclination he has as a player. They have improved their roster with the addition also of Elliott and the development of young players.

Roosters – Providing they don’t suffer another spate of injuries the Roosters will challenge for the Premiership in 2022. They have a formidable spine, slick outside backs and a solid forward pack with depth on the bench and in NSW Cup. Throw in Trent Robinson and things look very good for the Roosters.

Sea Eagles – There will be no issue in scoring points or playing attractive football on the edges.

The issue is going to be whether the forward pack can consistently win through the middle of the field, especially when they face quality opposition.

They simply could not compete with the top end of town in 2021 and I do not see that changing in 2022 despite the fact I think they will play Finals footy.

Sharks – Craig Fitzgibbon will have this team fit and strong on the fundamentals. This was his trademark as a player and assistant coach at the Roosters. The question will be around key positions and finding fluency and consistency, with some jostling for positions and having a lot of versatile players. The Sharks went very close to Finals in 2021 and I expect them to be right there again in 2022.

Storm – Consistently in the Top 4 each season.

No reason to think otherwise in 2022. It will be a final dance for a large contingent of their forward pack who have signed elsewhere for 2023. A lot will depend on the health and form of their spine.

I expect Cameron Munster to go close to winning the Dally M Medal, a big year ahead for the Storm.

Tigers – Key signings have come from the Super League in Hastings and Gildart. The club appointed five captains and Maguire barely survived season 2021. Welcome to Tiger Town… I do not see enough in the players coming in to suggest a change in fortune for the black and golds.

Titans – Pivotal season for the glitter strip club.

A Finals appearance in 2021 needs to be backed up with a step further in 2022. I have concerns around the loss of Fogarty as this points a fair bit of responsibility and pressure on young Sexton.

Where Holbrook utilises Brimson and Campbell will also be interesting. They have a Finals worthy roster, but talent guarantees little in the NRL. Warriors – Very difficult to predict the team from across the ditch, who will again be based at Redcliffe and away from home for long stretches of 2022. This has a role to play as a season wears on and undoubtedly places them at some sort of disadvantage. They have some additions in key positions which give cause for optimism, and I like Nathan Brown’s focus on simplicity and fundamentals with this team, if they can produce best form, they are a Finals dark horse.

Top 8: Roosters, Panthers, Storm, Eels, Sea Eagles, Raiders, Rabbitohs, Sharks.

eason 2022 will be the Penrith Panthers’ greatest opportunity to claim back-to-back premierships for the first time as they aim to reach Everest again.

Premiership defences are a test of physical and psychological endurance as the hunters become the hunted, every team in the competition lifts against the champions who now have a target on their back.

Penrith’s most recent title defence was 2004, when the Craig Gower led Panthers finished the regular season in the top four before losing to eventual premiers Canterbury in the preliminary final.

On paper, this side looks ready to mature into a genuine powerhouse of the competition for the next few years.

There’s a good mix of experienced, now premiership winners, and younger players with a thirst to play in the NRL and be a part the club’s on-field success.

Fullback Dylan Edwards’ stocks will continue to rise with consistency at the back and if he can remain injury-free he’s one of the premier fullbacks in the competition.

TH PANTHERS SEASON PREVIEW

Co-captain Isaah Yeo is on track to become one of the Panthers’ greatest back-rowers and more representative honours look set to come his way with his level of consistency.

Moses Leota and James Fisher-Harris in the front-row will be leading from the front and were in career best form during last year’s run to the premiership.

Both go about their business without fuss can find their way to the line for the occasional try.

Nathan Cleary is set for arguably the greatest test of his career. In club land he’s to lead the campaign and another heavy representative schedule to contend with. But as we have seen he’s capable.

The next level of players coming through are also exciting prospects as seen in the trial games. Izack Tago will get first dibs in the centres and showed he was handy in his limited game time last year.

The Panthers are process driven under Ivan Cleary which will stand them in good stead to navigate the unpredictable terrain that comes with being reigning premiers.

ith many families having been isolated during COVID, we are mindful that their dogs may have missed their annual vaccination against Parvovirus. With a huge spike in positive cases of Parvovirus from various Penrith suburbs in the past few weeks, we are encouraging all dog owners to check that their dog is up to date with their vaccinations.

Parvovirus is a deadly, highly infectious viral disease that affects dogs. The virus is shed from infected dogs in their saliva, vomit and faeces. It is extremely hardy and can resist most household disinfectants and survive in soil. It can be transported on shoes, clothes, flying insects and tyres (these kinds of transport are called fomites).

Dogs become infected when there is oral exposure to the virus in faeces, soil and fomites and they will be affected within 3-7 days of exposure.

Clinical signs of infection are inappetence, vomiting and haemorrhagic diarrhoea. The virus causes sloughing of the intestinal lining and attacks the immune system. Affected dogs have severe abdominal pain; they become dehydrated and will often develop complications like pneumonia and sepsis. Dogs without treatment normally die rapidly. To detect parvovirus infection a simple test

that takes only minutes to perform is available.

There is no way of killing the virus once dogs are affected. Treatment is intensive and aims to support the body until the virus is fought off by the dog’s own immune system. Patients require treatment in isolation with IV fluids, antibiotics, anti-nausea medications and pain relief. They often need plasma transfusions to help replace proteins lost from the gut. Transfusions also offer some antibodies from the donor. Recovery depends on the strength of the dog’s immunity and if complications can be successfully treated. Most dogs will recover with treatment but it can be lengthy and expensive, some dogs despite treatment sadly still die. Dogs will continue to shed the virus 2-3 weeks after recovery.

The best protection from parvovirus is vaccination.

Puppies require a series of vaccinations, normally three. Adult dogs require boosters to maintain their immunity. There are vaccinations that offer either 1 or 3 years of protection. Most dogs that are affected are either unvaccinated with no immunity or not fully vaccinated with only partial immunity.

Commonly cases are seen in puppies being exposed while they are still receiving their vaccination course and adult dogs that miss their booster vaccinations. Isolating dogs reduces exposure risk but due to the way parvovirus is spread, isolation alone is not guaranteed to fully protect your dog.

With COVID restrictions being eased, Greencross Coreen Ave vets and nurses are once again teaming with RSPCA to continue our community vaccination programs in an effort to eradicate this disease.

As with human diseases, the more animals in a population that are protected, the more effectively it reduces the spread of the disease and helps protect those most vulnerable to infection.

oday I have decided to enlighten you with car security tips. Yep, you got it, I usually charge lots of money for the crap that’s about to pour from my fingertips, however you my avid fans, get it all for free.

From what I have gathered over my time on the planet, is that the almighty car can mean many different things to people and at times, I have often wondered why some males have married their wives and not the beloved car.

That hunk of metal that you have cashed yourself up to your eyeballs in, that sits (quietly) on the driveway is also the bearer of many of your darkest secrets such as the odd scratch, body gas that could wipe out the state forest and the odd nose pick at traffic lights. Singing Mariah Carey in high C and thinking that you sound great and not to mention the many babies who can give thanks to the backseat.

Now before I give you my (what I consider) security expertise my friends, I have often wondered why some people feel the need to name a car like Berty, Prudence or Thumper? Or have personal number plates with “Killer” or “Throbber” on a car the size of my finger nail or not enough vrrrrooom in the engine to kick start a kettle? Yes, I know I am off track, but I just needed to share that with you. Handy hint - want a plate like “Throbber” maybe upgrade from the 1300cc and go to a V8 (Eye wink).

laptop and any other electronic contraption on the planet left on show in your car. Really good idea to take all that crap with you, because nobody except the baddies really care that you own a laptop bigger than Sydney airport’s flight command centre equipment. Oh and take the loose change in the console also. Give it to charity!

Hint two - The 11th commandment - Locketh thy car, (Can I get an Amen on that) you would be soooo surprised how many boneheads leave their car unlocked in car parks or driveways and wonder why it got stolen or broken into. We have all been guilty of this; rushed, kids screaming, dog hungry, bottle’o calling your name in 3D, however it is imperative (my big word for the day-Imperative) to lock your car every time you get out of it. (Copy that, roger wilco).

Hint three - Car alarm system, now to be perfectly honest, car stereos are not a big thing these days on the stealing scale as most cars come with the brand new one. However, some and I say some people do still buy a bells and whistles one. If you are going to have a 6 million car stereo in ya car – probably best to get an alarm installed.

Hint Four - Okay hands up who leaves car keys in the ignition while getting fuel (Don’t lie, come on you know you do; I can see you reading this with a grin on your face). Okay, well, this deserves the Chuck Norris upper cut award in bronze, because yes folks, cars have been stolen from servos. Take

your keys with you, sorry yeah I know it will add 3 seconds to the fuel up time and take three off your lifespan. This is a big tut tut tut with an index finger point, coming from me and I’m the supposed expert, remember?

Hint five - Parking the love machine in a dark place, now unless you are doing a stick up (hold up), drug transaction or some other activity that we can’t really describe here, it is a great idea to park in welllit areas and where people are around.

Hint Six - Pimping da ride - (Can I get a hell yeah) you love the $10,000 tyre rims with the Swarovski crystals on each nut, don’t you? Well so do the baddies. If you are going to beef up the bad boy, it may be a good idea to have it as the Sunday ride only, fully garaged (you thought I was going to say fully sick didn’t you?) and also maybe as a handy hint - have a very hungry Pit Bull stapled to the driver’s side door or front bonnet.

It’s great that you are spending the equivalent of a mortgage on your car, and starving the family, however, be aware that it will draw as much attention as a state of origin match. Just be aware that it is high on the Richter scale for car theft. (Just say’n).

So there you have it, Gina’s handy tips on car security, if all else fails..walk. (Cheaper anyway).

ancy Messina is a force of nature, even now as she contemplates a more relaxed lifestyle in retirement, ensconced in the beautiful surrounds of The Royce in Penrith.

A singer, poet and raconteur, it’s easy to understand life in her presence promises to be full of energy and entertainment, just from the sheer fact of living.

Born Nunzia Vittorino in Mezzojuso, Province of Palermo, Sicily, Italy in 1949 to parents Antonino Vittorino and Caterina (Musso) Vittorino, Nancy spent her early childhood in Italy, before migrating with her parents and brother Francesco (Frank) to Australia in 1956.

The family lived in Newtown, sharing the main bedroom and renting out the other two bedrooms to other families to help pay the mortgage.

Both Antonino and Caterina worked, whilst Frank sold newspapers every morning and afternoon until he turned 14, then he left school to become an apprentice hairdresser.

Younger sister Rosie was born in 1958 but became seriously ill whilst still very young, so Nancy also took on the role of caring for her sister whilst her parents were at work, in addition to attending school at Newtown PS, year 7 at Marrickville HS and lastly, at Fairfield HS. Due to Rosie’s illness, Nancy and her parents were constantly in touch with the medical profession and Nancy became the unofficial interpreter, allowing her to develop a stronger ability to master both the Sicilian / Italian language and English. Those early experiences also taught Nancy patience, tolerance and understanding, to accept things which are not in our control.

stopped working to stay at home and look after Rosie. This allowed Nancy to go to work for the first time and she accepted a role in book-keeping at Percy G. Williams, only leaving when the elderly Mr Williams retired.

Nancy then worked in Finance at the RSL Building Society and in 1970, met Marco Messina.

True love was immediate for the youngsters and with the blessings of both families, they were engaged in March and married in July (all within 5 months) – at All Hallows Church, Five Dock.

Nancy and Marco moved to Mascot and Nancy took on a position as Receptionist with Macris, Pryor and Tzannes Solicitors, which later became Pryor, Tzannes and Wallis.

Eldest son Anthony was born in 1972 on The Annunciation Day. This was Nancy’s loving nonna Nunzia’s ‘NAME DAY”’. Nunzia passed away whilst giving birth to her third baby boy, Paulo Vittorino (Nancy’s uncle), who eventually became a Monk and devoted himself to serving others throughout his lifetime. This gave Nancy the resolve to build a stronger belief and have a strong faith in God. They sold the business in Mascot in 1973 and moved to Smithfield, in the same street as Nancy’s parents Antonino and Caterina, and brother Frank and his wife Ann. Nancy and Marco’s second son

Frank was born in 1974 and daughter Nina in 1975, with all 3 children having been born in Crown Street Women’s Hospital.

Nancy and Marco purchased a Fruit Shop in Mt Pritchard, then about 12 months later, purchased a Fruit Shop in Moorebank. 9 months on, Marco and Nancy partnered with Marco’s brothers Norm and John, along with their wives Mimma and Maria, to form Messina Bros Pty Ltd, trading as Fred’s Fruit Market at Villawood.

In the 1980’s the group sold Villawood and purchased Sam’s Big Apple in St Ives, which the men decided would be a ‘men-only’ business.

Rather than hamper her style, Nancy’s outgoing personality drove her on to the next phase of her working life, taking over and revitalising a run-down Delicatessen and selling it for a significant profit. That enterprise was followed by a Take-Away Store, with the same scenario and outcome and would become an ongoing buyreinvigorate-sell cycle for many years.

In 1988, Nancy and Marco purchased Sports World in Wetherill Park and re-marketed the store as Sportscene, increasing the range of stock and introducing major brands which had not previously been stocked.

During the financial crisis of the

90’s Marco’s health suffered from the ongoing stress. Both he and his brother Norm developed Cancer, with Norm passing away very quickly but Marco holding on for a few more years before passing away in 1999.

Nancy and the children formed a close bond following Marco’s death, which is still just as strong today.

Nancy had begun new ventures during Marco’s illness outside selfemployment, working in the newspaper sales industry, building and real estate industry and this helped widen her perspective and strategy to simply survive financially. After Marco’s passing, Nancy and Richard Neville, who had been known to both Nancy and Marco in the past from the “fruit & vegetables market” world, committed to a life-long loving partnership.

The relationship between Nancy and Richard is as strong as ever and the two are both living in The Royce.

Nancy worked for Clarendon Residential Homes, Mirvac and Lendlease (particularly in Jordan Springs) and worked in the Lendlease office in Jordan Springs when it opened in 2010.

Nancy retired at the age of 64 in 2014 but could not stay idle, joining with daughter Nina to set up their own Real Estate office in Werrington County, trading as Richardson & Wrench/Jordan Springs/Werrington County.

As a young man, Nancy’s father Antonino had planned to write a book on his and his family’s life but unfortunately, he did not achieve his goal.

Nancy took up the gauntlet to not only encapsulate her father and mother’s heritage but also that of her extended family, capturing and beautifully detailing life, death, happiness, sadness and other life experiences, which have both preceded her and through her own lifetime.

Her book ‘A Migrant’s Story’ was published by Amazon and Author Academy Bookstore - Sue Kennedy Publishing in both English and Italian and is an entertaining read, leading you forward through the lives of the Vittorino, Messina, Musso families, including other Italian / European / Australian families.

It’s evident in Nancy’s rich telling, all who have migrated here are very proud Australians and have raised their children accordingly, with Nancy now having the added enjoyment of four grandchildren in the family – and more time to enjoy their company.

“All migrants from all parts of the world who have migrated to this wonderful country of ours AUSTRALIA will certainly relate to my book,” said Nancy.

Normie Rowe - A Legend on Tour

ustralian entertainment L e g e n d s Normie Normie AM (King of Pop), Dinah Lee (Queen of the Mods) and Jade Hurley OAM (Australia’s King of Country Rock) are combining in March and April to present 10 concerts in both NSW and QLD. The tour starts at EVAN Theatre, Penrith Panthers on Wednesday 23rd March and concludes at the J Theatre, Noosa on Tuesday 5th April.

Originally the inspiration of Jade, the trio have now done 11 Legends tours together over the years (10 in Qld and 1 in Newcastle), which have all proved extremely popular.

The trio begin and end the night’s entertainment singing together, with each also performing solo sessions during the concert.

Normie Rowe was Australia’s biggest pop star of the legendary 60’s, defying the logic of the times and reaching the peak of his popularity in an era dominated by the Beatles.

Normie created riots whenever he appeared live and became the first Melbourne recording artist to achieve a national Australian No.1 hit.

Born in1947, Normie began his music career in a duo at the age of 12, which grew to become a group, which performed in Melbourne’s annual Moomba Festival.

Normie’s emergence to stardom took momentum when, at the age of 14, he performed in his music school’s concert.

Normie was spotted by the concert’s compere, prominent Melbourne radio personality Stan Rofe, who was suitably impressed and made the appropriate introductions to dance promoters and the rest is history.

Normie’s driver to concerts as a child was drummer Graham (Trotta) Trotterman, then the drummer for ‘The Chessmen’. The pair have remained firm friends since that time, with ‘Trotta’ still backing Normie on drums in concerts. The duo hope to celebrate Trotta’s 80th birthday on stage later this year.

At the very beginning of his recording career, EMI passed up an opportunity to sign Normie and, as a result, Festival Records, through Brisbane independent label Sunshine Records, offered him the chance instead.

His first single ‘It Ain’t Necessarily So’ was hugely controversial, suggesting that ‘the things that you’re liable, to read in the Bible’ weren’t necessarily true.

The song would go on to become a Top Ten hit, hitting #1 in Sydney.

Normie’s second single, ‘I Who Have Nothing’, became another Top Ten and his third single also took the nation by storm. On one side, Normie revived and energised Doris Day’s ‘Que Sera Sera’, whilst on the other side he recorded English rock’s only pre-Beatles classic, ‘Shakin’ All Over’. Both sides of the single received massive airplay and carried the single to No.1 nationally, accompanied by the constant “Normie Rowe riot” headlines generated by his live performances.

Venues at Normie’s live performances were over-crowded, resulting in the precursor of the now established ‘Mosh-Pit’.

In August 1966, Normie travelled to England, where he would enjoy even more success but two years later, life was about to take a dramatic turn.

Australia became involved in the Vietnam War and 20-year old males were liable for conscription into the military. Normie’s name came up in first 1968 intake.

Normie - #3793130 Trooper (Tpr) Norman John ‘Normie’ Rowe, A Squadron, 3rd Cavalry Regiment, Royal Australian Armoured Corps (RAAC) - served in Vietnam from January to December 1969 and was one of the lucky ones to return.

During his tour of duty he rose through the ranks to corporal and ultimately as the crew commander of an armoured personnel carrier. He described the work as “out on the highway, protection for vehicle convoys and land-clearing team . . . taking in infantry, and things like that”. Whilst serving in Vietnam, Normie also lent his musical talents to the entertainment of the troops, performing in several concerts with other Australian entertainers at the 1st Australian Task Force (1ATF) base at Nui Dat, South Vietnam. He also featured in the 1969 Christmas show, broadcast on the United States Armed Forces television network throughout South Vietnam.

His time away from his fans cost him dearly in the popularity stakes of the music industry, with Australia’s King Of Pop crown now firmly settled on the head of Johnny Farnham.

Normie scored his last hit of that era in May 1970, just after his release from the Army. However, his ‘pop star’ era had ended and he moved into the wonderful training ground of the NSW Clubs circuit. Throughout this period, Normie constantly worked with big bands and the masters of the Australian music industry, including Ricky May, Johnnie O’Keefe, Col Joye, etc.

In 1975, Normie received the “Most Popular Performance” prize at the 1974 Yamaha World Song Contest in Tokyo, with his yet to be released song “Elizabeth”.

Normie subsequently recorded “Elizabeth”, which went to #1 immediately and remained there for 6 weeks.

In 1984 Normie spent 2 1/2 years studying Drama under the mentorship of the great Hayes Gordon and was subsequently cast in his first play, ‘Some Night In Julia Creek’.

Grundy producers then cast him in the Australian soap opera ‘Sons and Daughters’ then, in 1987, Normie landed the lead role of Jean Valjean in the musical ‘Les Miserables’, which he played to great acclaim in over 600 performances. He then appeared in leading roles in a string of musicals, including “Annie”, “Chess”, “Evita”, “Cyrano”, “Get Happy” and “Oklahoma”. In 2002 he stole the show with his performances of “Que Sera Sera” and “Shakin’ All Over” on the hugely successful ‘Long Way To The Top’ concert series, which played to 160,000 people in Australia and became a hit CD/DVD and national television broadcast.

Normie was inducted into the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) Hall of Fame in 2005 and also in that year, was recognised by the Australian War Memorial as a National Hero, alongside the likes of Sir Charles Kingsford-Smith, Vivien Bullwinkle, Keith Miller, Chips Rafferty and 45 other heroes of Australia. Normie has become a leading advocate and spokesman for the Vietnam Veterans and in 1987 and 1992, he was instrumental as a member of the National Committees for the Vietnam Veterans Welcome Home Parade and the Vietnam National Memorial Dedication.

In 2009 Normie joined The Governor General and Sir Jack and Lady Margaret Brabham as National Patrons of Kidney Health Australia (Formerly The Kidney Foundation).

More recently Normie has become the Ambassador for Soldier On, a support organisation focusing on younger ex-service people dealing with physical and psychological effects of their war service deployments.

In 2016, Normie saw the release of his Biography, co-written with Ed Nimmervoll. ‘Normie, the Normie Rowe Story’ traces his life from his early days in suburban Melbourne through to the current era.

In addition to highlighting the trauma of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in both himself and other Vietnam Veterans, the book includes personal joys and tragedy, plus anecdotes and descriptions of Australian urban life from the 1950’s to today.

his year, the Zonta Club of Nepean Valley held their annual International Women’s Day dinner on the 1st March at the Penrith Panthers Club.

ydney real estate prices appear to start to have flattened out finally. CoreLogic’s monthly figures show Sydney prices declined 0.1 percent over February.

This is the first negative result since September 2020.

“The slower growth conditions in Australian housing values goes well beyond the rising expectation of interest rate hikes later this year,” Mr Lawless noted.

“The pace of growth in housing values started to ease in April last year, when fixed-term mortgage rates began to face upwards pressure, fiscal support was expiring and housing affordability was becoming more stretched.

With rising global uncertainty and the potential for weaker consumer sentiment amidst tighter monetary policy settings, the downside risk for housing markets has become more pronounced in recent months,” Mr Lawless from CoreLogic said.

Advertised inventory levels help explain the divergence in housing growth trends.

properties advertised for sale over the four weeks ending 27 February was 13.3 percent lower than the same period a year ago, demonstrating an ongoing shortage of available housing to purchase, at least at the macro-level.

Despite the low total listing count, advertised supply levels are gradually normalising after tracking close to 25 percent below the prior years’ level before spring 2021.

While some cities, such as Melbourne and Sydney, have seen advertised stock return to more normal levels, other Australian capitals are

continuing to record extremely low inventory.

One months’ figures need to be taken in isolation but this could be the start of a new flat cycle for Sydney property.

Fixed rates have increased Fixed interest rates for owner occupiers have risen sharply over the last 5-6 months. Mid last year you could lock in your fixed rates for 1 to 4 years all under 2 percent. Now the average 2 year rate is around 3.0 percent, 3 year rate is 3.5 percent and 3.8 percent or over for 4 or 5 years.

Higher borrowing costs will have

a major affect on borrowing capacity and a capacity and willingness to pay high prices for property. History always shows this to be the case. The higher interest rates climb, the higher the chances of property prices falling later this year and over 2023.

Variable rates have remained the same but there is wide expectation that the Reserve Bank (RBA) could start to increase the official cash rate around mid this year. They may then continue to raise rates by 1 percent over the following 12 months and by up to 2 percent over the following 24 months.

These raises will be used to reign in the likely increases to inflation. If you see inflation continue to increase above 3-4 percent, then expect the RBA to continue to raise the official cash rate.

These rises will then be passed on by the lenders and we will see the variable rates rise accordingly.

It’s not too late to lock in your home loan rates but the quicker you act, the lower the rate will be.

rederick Charles Jones was born in 1875 in Castlereagh Street, Penrith. His father John was born in Carnarvon in Wales and was employed on the London and Northwestern Railway and came to NSW to take up a Government Job. He married Dinah Fanny Wilson who was born at Lawson NSW. With only £150 of borrowed money and no experience in the tannery business, Fred selected a block of ground on Scotts Creek, (formally Stotts Creek) that was between Werrington & Kingswood on the northern side of the railway line and where with the practical help of Daniel Paskin and Bill Ransley, they put down twelve pits and built one small shed to equip the pumping arrangement and a wheelbarrow. A month after the completion of the tannery in 1897 the tannery of five acres was turning out 40 hides of leather a week and by 1910 it had grown into 25 acres of land and handling 1,000 hides a week. After about 11 years of operation of the tannery his annual turnover was estimated to be £60,000. His tanning sheds were most extensive and a practical mixture of old and new. One shed alone measured 120’ x 50’ and was capable of holding £10,000 worth of stock, while others provided plenty of accommodation for drying, dressing, baling and dispatching. Two rooms were set aside for steam drying, one room could hold 800 hides and the other capable of holding 2,000 hides of leather. The drought of 1901/2 dried up his water resources of Scott’s Creek and to keep his tannery working with 20 men employed, he joined with the Paskin Brothers whose tannery was close by and drawing water from the water tower that was located at Kingswood and both tanneries were able to carry on until the drought broke. To stop this from happening again at his own expense Fred built a pipeline a distance of 25 miles from the Nepean River to the tanning yard. The pipeline was situated just inside the railway fence from Penrith to Werrington then across to the tannery. His tannery produced a good quality heavy sole leather that went to two leading Sydney boot and shoe manufacturers. The light and medium leather was exported to South Africa, England and Scotland. His chief source of hides came from the Riverstone Meat Works and the rest from open markets. Later on, they came from his properties in Queensland. In 1920 Fred and a brother bought 4,000 acres of land at Bulga in the Gunnedah district and with other purchases of land, they held a total of 9,000 acres that eventually held some 10,000 sheep and 850 head of cattle. He also took part in meat share farming. Fred let nothing go to waste. The extraction of tallow from the fleshing of hides found a good market in Sydney. He was also “Captain of Industry” for one of his investments in the “State Boot Manufacturing Company” and had a shop on the north-eastern corner of High & Station Streets, Penrith. Other interests were a fish curing venture at Lower Portland, a sawmill at Douglas Park, an interest in a colliery at Lithgow and a gold mining venture at Bungonia in the Goulburn district. Fred was a keen sportsman especially in trotting, and as owner, trainer and driver he owned some of the fastest trotting horses in NSW and for some years was a leading reinsman for square trotters at Sydney courses. He was also a keen gun shot and sporting dog enthusiast owning at one time 24 beagle dogs. He was also a large landowner in the Penrith district, one of the largest known as “Jones Town Estate”, the property was the original grant of John Best in 1814.

The Nepean District Hospital is built on part of his estate where he also had a circular training track. In a Land appeal court at Sydney in 1908 regarding the matter of an appeal by Fred against the appraised value

of his land of 28 perches resumed for a road in connection with the approach to the Nepean River, it was explained that the case arose under the Public Roads Act of 1902 “where in section 18, provided that in estimating the amount payable as compensation of the value of the land resumed, and all the improvements and the damage if any, was to be sustained from the severance of the property by the road and should, in every case, be determined by the local land board unless an agreement arrived at between the Minister and the owner”. The question of severance at that stage had not been raised and the Court remitted the case to the Board for further evidence and the Court directed a refund of the deposit that was lodged with the notice of appeal. At the Penrith Police Court in 1912 a case of Edward John Moriarty (Inspector under the Board of Health) v Frederick Charles Jones for allowing polluted matter from Fred’s tannery to run into Werrington Creek, the colour of the water was black. Fred pleaded not guilty. The court case went on for some time with Fred and many witnesses, but in the end the Magistrate dismissed the case. Fred was well known for his generosity and in the depression years of 1930 to 1935 he gave 20 blocks of land off his estate for homes to unemployed homeless families. He also gave land in High Street in Penrith for the central district ambulance. Another case in the same Court in 1936 was St Marys Council suing Fred for allegedly breaching the Local Government ordinances by polluting Werrington Creek, but this time St Marys’ Council was successful when Herbert Pond the Inspector of the Council said that “Werrington Creek was a natural watercourse and in January he visited this tannery for an inspection. He said that “There was a drain that led from an evaporation pond to Werrington Creek and the liquid that was pumped out of the tannery was pink, and a very unpleasant odour and he asked to see Fred who was not at the tannery on his visit”. The P.M. convicted Fred and said he was inclined to think that Fred didn’t know what was going on and when the employees saw what was happening they tried to cover it up before Fred came back. He was fined the court costs, professional costs and witnesses’ expenses. Fred died at his Penrith residence in August, 1938 at the age of 64 and is buried in the Penrith General Cemetery in Kingswood. After his death his tannery continued for a short while and eventually closed down after a productive life of 41 years. ocal professional wrestling group Wrestle Strong Dojo held their latest event at the Penrith Gaels club this past Sunday 20th of February. Glenmore Park’s favorite wrestler Joey Fox made his debut and managed to get an upset victory over the more experienced Nate Carlo with a quick roll up pin.

Nate’s manager Jack Hellering was not happy with the result attacking Fox after the match. Hellering’s other client CJ Young joined in on the mugging until Wrestle Strong owner Amy Action ordered an immediate tag team match. Foxx teamed up with Aragon, one of the roster’s strongest and toughest competitors, the victory however ended up in the hands of Carlo & Young known by their tag team name, The Solution.

of the ring Dean Draven issued an open challenge for anyone to take him on for the Wrestle Strong Dojo Heavyweight championship. Metal Corey stood up and came to the ring, however, Corey was not thinking about an ordinary wrestling match.

With Kendo stick in hand Corey wanted a No DQ match against the heavyweight champion. Draven said he would have to wait until the next show but then blindsided Corey and locked in the Crossface Submission hold using the Kendo stick. The title match has been made official for the next show on May 15th at Penrith Gaels. Metal Corey will get his No DQ match against Dean Draven for the WSD Heavyweight title.

A junior heavyweight title match took place on the night as current champion and crowd favorite Shaz Namaste went up against Blue Mountains local Banjo Powers. The

ever improving Powers wasn’t able to reclaim the title he lost back on December 5, 2021 in Bonnyrigg.

Namaste secured the win following a kick to the head and then a standing moonsalt.

The annual Wrestle Strong Dojo awards took place with Banjo Powers taking out wrestler of the year, Adam Facaa received the Award of Excellence for his work outside the ring with Fighters Against Child Abuse Australia, match of year went to Dean Draven vs El Mas Terrible’ and Rookie of the year went to Metal Corey.

Not seen too often in Australian wrestling a Lumberjack match was the main event of the night as the year long reigning feud between The Fighters champion Adam Facaa and ‘The Rockstar’ Jack Gibson came to a head. A lumberjack match is a match stipulation in which the ringside area

is surrounded by other wrestlers.

If a competitor leaves the ring, the lumberjacks are tasked with throwing him back in.

Andrews Road’s baseball fields

Andrews Road’s two Baseball Fields looked more like lakes than sporting fields last month with the heavy rainfall

proving too much for the water-logged field to drain away.

The effect only last for approximately 24 hours, with the water mostly

dispersing but leaving both fields sodden and covered in multiple (but much smaller) ponds.

community are suffering at the moment and the forecast isn’t promising, with even more heavy rain predicted over the coming week.

Penrith’s wild weather has cut a swathe of damage through the district, not only flooding streets and parks but

causing damage in multiple suburbs.

Leonay golf course was among many locations buffeted by high winds on the night of 21st February, with trees blown down across several

fairways and debris scattered like confetti across fairways and greens.

Course staff and contractors were hard at work early on Tuesday 22nd February endeavouring to clear all

of the fallen trees but the course, like many others in the district, proved unplayable for days due to the deluge of rain which continuously fell over numerous days.

Wild weather drowns Major Pennant

here weren’t many games played on Sunday in the 2022 Golf NSW Men’s and Women’s Major Pennant competitions but amazingly, some courses were still playable.

Penrith golf course succumbed to the weather, resulting in a 3.5-3.5 draw with Moore Park, Mona Vale overcame both the weather and playing away on a sodden course to defeat Twin Creeks 4-3, The Lakes players had webbed feet to cruise to a 5.5-1.5 win over Dunheved Golf Club, the Stonecutters Ridge course stood up to the weather and taking full home course advantage, Stonecutters recorded a powerful 6.5-0.5 over Muirfield.

Brighton Lakes lived up to its name, preventing any play against Richmond and thereby recording another 3.5-3.5 draw, Glenmore Heritage Valley Golf Club was rained out for a 3.5-3.5 draw against Woolooware, Springwood Country Club had a 5-2 win over Bayview, no play at Marrickville for a 3.53.5 result against Wallacia Country Club and no play at Beverly Park for a 3.5-3.5 result against Leonay Golf Club.

In the Women’s Major Pennant, Stonecutters Ridge fielded three juniors yet still grabbed a strong 4-1 win over Cronulla.

The Women’s Grade Pennant competition also commenced last Friday and Penrith opened its season with a powerful 4.5-0.5 over Cumberland, in spite of the absence of two of the squad’s top players.

Penrith GC hosts 40th Annual Penrith Open Amateur

P

enrith GC hosts the 40th annual Penrith Open Amateur on Saturday 5th March (weather permitting).

Although not entered to play at time of writing, 2021 runaway winner Jeff Gadd will be hoping to repeat his success against a quality field, should he start on the day.

Gadd ripped the course apart last year, firing a 9-under par score of 63 to claim the title by 8 shots from his eldest son, Josh.

If Jeff suits up, there will be a trio of Gadd’s in this year’s event, with younger son Blade joining his father

and elder brother in the event and keen to knock the king off his crown and claim this year’s title.

Jeff (2021) and Josh (2019) have both previously won the Penrith Open and it would be an amazing feat for Blade to claim a family trifecta.

With a handicap limit of 5.7 for visitors, this year’s Vardon event is sure to attract another high-quality field, including the majority, if not all, of the members of Penrith’s Major Pennant squad.

The scratch winner will receive the Sutherland Cup, whilst the Nett winner receives the Watkins Bowl.

On the Hunt for speed at Phillip Island

he bLU cRU Oceania Junior Cup series began the 2022 season on the weekend, at the home of Motorcycling in Australia, Phillip Island.

The young riders were in great company on the weekend at the opening round of the Australian Superbike Championships, with the running of the Yamaha R3 Cup, Supersport 300, Supersport and culminating with Australia’s best riders competing in the Superbike category.

12-year old William Hunt (Mulgoa Rise) was competing in the OJC series opener and returned home full of confidence, following strong performances in three race starts over Saturday and Sunday.

William qualified for the weekend’s races in 11th out of 20 riders, which was a good effort.

In Race 1 on Saturday, he got away to a nervous start and dropped 2 spots, before working his way back to 11th by the end of the race.

In Race 2 on Sunday morning, William got a brilliant start, working his way up to 2nd before a red flag (for Geese on the track) stopped the race. Unfortunately, the results went back a lap, which classified William in 10th for the restart.

Race 2’s restart was run over 3 laps and once again, William got a brilliant start from 10th and fought hard in an effort to move up the field. At the end of lap 2, William was still in 10th spot but took advantage of a slipstream and a bucket-full of determination, riding around the outside of everyone at turn 1 to come out the other side in 1st spot. Unfortunately, by the time he crossed the finish line he had dropped to 9th due to a little inexperience and the slipstream.

During this race William clocked a time of 2:09.603, which was 2/100th’s of a second off the OJC Lap Record.

For Race 3, William started in 11th on the grid, again working his way up to 3rd spot before a serious crash on lap 3 saw the race red-flagged. Once again, the results went back a lap and William was classified as finishing 9th.

For the weekend, William finished 9th overall, which is a great start to the year with so many good things to take into the next round in QLD on March 18-20.

Following a 2-day training session for the OJC squad at Winton this week, William has been invited to compete in the 2022 FIM MiniGP Series in Port Melbourne. The FIM MiniGP Series is run world-wide and the winner of the Australian series will travel to Spain for the World Championships.

Motorcycling Australia and Ohvale Australia have worked closely over the past 12 months to secure Australia’s involvement in the 2022 FIM MiniGP World Series, which is a ‘Road to MotoGP’ initiative between Doma, FIM and Ohvale.

14-year old Layla Sharp keeps setting herself new goals and smashing them, winning three Under 20 NSW Junior titles on the weekend in the 400m, 800 and 1500m.

Incredibly, Layla ran yet another personal best (PB) in the 400m, shaving 2 seconds off her winning time the previous weekend.

Layla ran the 400m in 67 seconds, the 800m in 2:40 and the 1500m in 5:35 to claim the title in each race.

She has now qualified for both the Australian Juniors and the Australian Open but will only compete in the Juniors, as the Open events overlap the Juniors and will be too much for her young body.

Layla began her current winning streak the previous weekend, breaking three Australian records in the 1500m, 800m and 400m events at the NSW Open.

She broke her own Australian Open Age record in the 1500m, running 5:32 minutes, followed up with the 400m and broke her own Australian U18 record with a time of 69 seconds.

decorative bib is for those athletes who are being closely observed as Australia’s next potentials, and those who are breaking records in their respective age groups, both for mainstream athletes and those in the disability classes.”

essica Fox has again shown why she is considered the best canoe slalom paddler of all time, winning two Gold medals at the 2022 Canoe Slalom Australian Open, which was held at the Penrith Whitewater Stadium from 25th-27th February.

Jessica finished the highly successful weekend with Australian Open titles in the Women’s Canoe (WC1) and Women’s Kayak (WK1), along with Silver in the Women’s Extreme Slalom, whilst fellow Olympian and Penrith local Lucien Delfour also finished with double Gold, winning the Men’s Kayak (MK1) and Men’s Extreme Slalom events.

Noemie Fox took her opportunity

to shine in the last Women’s event of the Championships, winning the Gold in the Women’s Extreme Slalom to back up her success at the Oceania Championships, whilst Victorian Tristan Carter won Gold in the Men’s Canoe (MC1) event.

27-year old Jessica (NSW) won the WC1 (Canoe) title on Sunday, finishing an impressive 16.99 seconds ahead of 24-year old Kate Eckhardt (Tas) in second and 18.76 seconds ahead of 24year old Demelza Wall (Tas) in third.

In the men’s Canoe final, it was 24year old Melbourne paddler Tristan Carter in first, a mere 1.85 seconds ahead of 24-year old Kaylen Bassett (NSW) in second and 2.96 seconds ahead of 18-year old Mark Crosbee (Vic) in third.

“It was a very challenging course, compared to yesterday (heats) very

physical,” Jessica said.

“It was about 10 seconds slower than yesterday and I definitely felt it in the arms but I’m happy with the win.”

Jessica and Lucien Delfour were both crowned champions in the kayak (K1) finals on Saturday, giving the pair back to back K1 titles following their successes at the recent 2022 ICF Oceania Canoe Slalom Championships.

Lucien also enjoyed the challenge of a more demanding course and was relieved to have been able to put together a good run for the Men’s K1 final.

“I can’t remember the last time we had a course that challenging - not necessarily that the moves were hard, but it was a combination of all of them put together,” he said.

“There were only a couple of sections where you could cruise through, but

otherwise in every single gate you had to maintain a fair amount of control, and that’s quite draining.

“I was really happy to have improved from the heats to the semis, and then again from the semis to the final because that’s what you always want to do.”

33-year old Lucien finished 1.47 seconds ahead of 27-year old Tim Anderson (Vic) in second and 7.01 seconds ahead of 27-year old Ben Pope (WA) in third.

Jessica won the WK1 final by 0.83 seconds over Kate Eckhardt in second and 8.81 seconds ahead of 25-year old Georgina Collin (WA) in third.

Noemie and Lucien finished the weekend off with impressive wins in the Extreme Slalom on Sunday night, each claiming the gold medal in their respective Women’s and Men’s events.
