ydney Metro College NAWS Cup 2016â&#x20AC;&#x2122; one pioneering soccer competition in our community started from first of May 2016. Nineteen Sydney based competent soccer teams including the defending Champions Saint George Friends Football Club (SGFFC) and Runners-up Saint George Nepalese Club (SGNC) have been participating in the reputed and esteemed soccer competition. It is one longest running soccer tournament with the glorious history. It has been consistently performing in the best interest of our community in general and soccer-culture in particular. In the augural speech the President of Nepalese Australian Welfare Society respected Binod Sharma shared that NAWS, established in 1999 aims to promote close cooperation among Nepalese in Australia and enhance the social harmony through the best loved sport in our community along with delivering the community oriented volunteer service. He extended the hearty thanks to all the respected stakeholders and soccer fraternity for cooperating with NAWS for bringing it to this prominent level. He also requested all the soccer teams for their continued support and proactive assistance. It is the best soccer competition in its own right. From this year, three matches are being played every Sunday. It is the league cum knockout modelled on the last round of the World Cup Football. There is no any knockout soccer tournament in our community participated by more teams and for longer time. The sport coordinator Prakash Panthi said this year the prize money will be increased. The winner will be awarded

with $ 1200, runner-up will be awarded with $600 and the second runner-up will be awarded with $ 350 in addition to the shield and certificate. Raju Manandhar, the former treasurer of All Nepal Football Association (ANFA) and the Chairman of NRNA ICC for Oceania and Asia region was appointed as the Match Commissioner cum Tournament Director as in the last edition of NAWS Cup. He shared the value of sportsmanship in any competition and our life alike. He appealed all for the healthy competition or friendly rivalry. The soccer matches in our community are growing more and more competitive with the passing of time. The inaugural match was played between Granville Rhino Football Club (GRFC) and Auburn Football Club (AFC). The matches are heating up for the decisive showdown or elimination round. All the matches have certain degree of competitive edge and have attracted fair numbers of audiences. The Vice-President and Australian Nepalese Football Association (ANFA) General Secretary Arun K. Tamang viewed that NAWS Cup is arguably one of the best football tourneys in our community. He thanked all involved in launching the landmark football comp and covering many significant mileposts with the consistent performances. He expressed his hope that all well-meaning community members and stakeholders will be contributing positively for the overall progress and good-will of soccer. The tournament will continue for nearly four months.

Teacher, Raju Manandhar, the former Principal, Lalit Kala Campus (Master’s in Fine Arts, TU), is going to be held in Sydney in the month of June and July by courtesy of Rabindra Kumar Sharma, Managing Director/ CEO at Baba Education Consultancy. The young Nepalese artist of international repute Kapil Mani Dixit was recently felicitated with the prestigious Arkino Youth National Art Award -2014. Mr. Kapil Mani Dixit is a well acclaimed visual artist of Nepal, with a degree in Fine Arts from the University of Texas at Arlington, Texas, USA. Kapil is regarded as a pioneer in introducing and promoting nude art in Nepal. He is popularly known for his figurative art

outstanding artistic ability and commitment to art. Recognizing his contribution to his society through his art and charities in Nepal, he has recently been nominated as the “Distinguished Alumni Award 2013” by the Dean of the College of Liberal Arts, at University of Texas Arlington. The pursuit of creative acts puts one in the situation of having some self-awareness. Painting involves reflection and confrontation with oneself and the medium. works, especially for drawing nude figures from live models, the first of its kind in the country. He is passionate about his artwork and enjoys figurative drawings, paintings and sculptures. Mr. Dixit is also very fond of social work and has been associated with various charitable and noble causes through his artworks. Some of his recent contributions includes: Art Donation for Flood Victims in Nepal; Art Auction to help build a schools in two remote districts of Nepal: Argalhachi and Dolpa; Art Auction to help the Katrina Victims in the USA, and Art Charity to raise funds for the treatment of a Nepali Students in the USA. Mr. Dixit has participated in more than seventy art exhibitions and art workshops in Nepal, the USA and Australia. Amongst his awards and felicitations, selected are: Special Achievement Award, People’s Choice Award, Who is Who Award, Outstanding Effort Award, Best of the Show Award, and Purchase Award, in the USA. He is also the Member of National Scholar’s Honor Society, USA. In the United States, Mr. Dixit has established a “Kapil Dixit Excellence Award” at the North Lake College, Irving, Texas, to help outstanding art students in college. We are attracted to Kapil’s works as we see his works as rearranging existing genres to include his own obsessions. He sincerely attempts to fuse the boundaries between that which is conscious and public and that which is unconscious and private. His works flow from his inner self. It is implied in one his painting in a dream with its large dark shape and vibrating rose-like symbols being inspired by the principle, ‘sound unheard’. His speciality is that he can make us see an unreal image with one eye, and real objects with the other and we are appealed to dwell in imagination and think of something else at the same time. Most of them spring from a figurative basis. He seems to have devoted much of his time searching for a non-narrative, non-literal vehicle for figurative intent, to be able to encapsulate the human experience without the specific human reference. Much of his work deals with isolation and the tensions which operate between forms and space. Through necessity, formal considerations of composition, structure and such have played a significant role in the development of his images. He expresses a sense of being with a tangible purpose. In some paintings like in Australian contemporary art, his paintings reflect the diverse way in which religious or spiritual impulses emerge into

These works, as will become immediately obvious, confirm a vitality and vibrant originality that continues to flourish in contemporary Nepalese art and beyond the geographical boundary. Manandhar’s simple paintings owe much to his own cultural traditions and feels a close personal link with native psyche. n his welcome speech, GNC President paid sincere compliment on all the respected stakeholders and soccer fraternity and community members for continuing to contribute consistently to enhance the reputation and good-will and glorious history of GNC League. He assured that with the continued cooperation of all GNC will be honestly performing better for the overall progress of sports and culture. The respected GNC President Tanka Gurung and the well-known sport contributor and footballer Rajiv Pradhan did honour to the first Tournament Director in the history of GNC League, the former ANFA Nepal treasurer and player Raju Manandhar with the token of love. The chief guest of the prize distribution ceremony, Gus Balloot, honourable Councillor of Liverpool City Council heartily thanked to the organizer for organizing such an inspiring and exemplary soccer championship and the promising soccer workshop for the kids. He held Nepalese community spirit in high esteem and shared that Liverpool City Council will be proud to continue to assist more effectively to the deserving community activities of GNC. From this year, GNC Veterans’ League saw a real league competition accommodating the six leading Sydney based football clubs, including the defending champion Machhapuchhre Football Club MFC and first runner Saint George Football Club SGNC of GNC Veterans’ League 2015, SGFFC, HYC, LFC and Parra Park Football Club (PP). The highest point earner in the round robin league Himalayan Youth Club HYC, one forerunning soccer team in our community, clinched the covetous trophy. The GNC Vice-President, Dev Gurung offered the vote of thanks. He appreciated the wonderful sense of cooperation and understanding of the distinguished teams and display of sportsmanship of great players. “One of the marvellous things about community is that it enables us to welcome and help people in a way we couldn't as individuals. When we pool our strength and share the work and responsibility, we can welcome many people, even those in deep distress, and perhaps help them find self-confidence and inner healing.” - Jean Vanier It is never too late to start a new thing and achieve a goal. In this edition, for the first time the Veteran’s Football League found the title sponsor. There is always a room for improvement and our main agenda is to improve standard. In the past a team or two would have short of players or saw a walkover and the player who played for one team in the same championship would play for the next team as there would be less numbers of players. The championship in this category was played in the round robin format from this edition. All teams seem to attempt to improve their degree of competiveness. Each team tried their best to gain a competitive advantage over rival teams. The Sydney based highly competent six teams played against one another. All six teams were defeated at least in one match. One reputed and long-standing team Lali Gurans Club (LFC) which was in the sixth position played 1-1 draw against Himalayan Youth Club (HYC) which eventually became the champion. HYC had to wait the result of the last match in the league before they would be crowned with

Sports the trophy. The players who recently turned 35 and those past 50 enthusiastically participated in the championship for different clubs. In any veterans’ tournaments, the much senior players are given special treatment and their participation holds unique value and the oldest scorers are specially awarded. In the last two editions of GNC Veterans’ League, Raju Manandhar was the oldest goal scorer. In ‘GNC Interactive Mobile and We Connect Communication Veteran’s League 2016’ too, he scored a goal and became the oldest scorer. He had been ruled out of all the matches except the last match in this season with a serious ankle injury for nearly three months. Within ten minutes after the kick-off, he found a net with a header. When Tom Thapa, the highly experienced and skilled SGNC player delivered the quality free kick aerially in the penalty area, he ran towards the ball and side headed in the top right corner with perfect timing and it was a quality finisher. He seems to have practised the golden philosophy, “My biggest motivation? Just to keep challenging myself. I see life almost like one long university education that I never had every day. I’m learning something new.” – Richard Branson. ‘Sport is all about competing well rather than winning. When you are competing with yourself in coordination with the teammates, there are records on the cards. In each tournament, it is felt that some of the players are left out to be awarded. They are not awarded in spite of being deserving as there are limited individual awards for individual attributes. In the cultured society, they are written off and it is considered as an award in itself. With utmost respect and appreciation to all the recipients of the covetous individual awards there were some unsung heroes of 17th Annual Gurkha Nepalese Community (GNC) Everest Communications Football League 2015/16. Kunal Lama, the long standing soccer player in our community with the fairly solid experience or big match experience of playing at the top level league in Nepal, represented Nepal as the captain of Nepalese team that participated in some international soccer competitions in own right in Australia. Kunal, tall and athletic, applies many physical and tactical skills. His scoring rate is higher than average. He had been the captain of Nepalese team that stood second in the ‘Mini South Asian Cup 2014’. The impact skipper of, Sagarmatha Football Club (SFC), played as the power-forward along with playing as the playmaker mostly commanding in the mid pitch. The extremely dependable all-rounder exploited his individual flair to maximize the performance of the team. He always prioritized his role as a team player. Like the genius footballers, he ran for the ball, with the ball, dribbled, defended, crossed the ball, shot

powerfully and technically to the goal etc. He is a very spectacular passer and his defence splitting passes proved result-oriented as well. Irrespective of the competence level of the opponent team, the formidable frontline player made sporadic strikes by himself at the goal and also very sensibly moved between the midfielders and strikers to create the scoring opportunities for the team. When his attack broke down, he took up required pace to track back and win the ball. His standing out performance was also crucial to the team’s wins and narrowing down the goal deficit against the opponents. Even the defenders of great teams often find the opportunities to score. His team in spite of playing like a unit failed to register wins in many matches. But he succeeded in scoring in almost all matches he played. In one match, his team conceded six goals, but he almost singlehandedly scored hat-trick. This match saw hat-tricks from both sides which is a rare phenomenon in any competitive match. He is a very skilful penalty taker and can convert the spot kick even under a great pressure. Very often he played physical game marked by intelligent sense of footballing. In the match against one leading team, which emerged as the champions in the ‘GNC Everest Communications Football Shield 2016’, he was a defeat-evading player. In the last quarter of the match he scored two goals for his team to lend the incredible comeback for the team. His ability to keep ticking things over in midfield dictated the tempo of the game amongst his fairly offense-minded team-mates, braced in a 2-2 draw against one title contender. He was determined to pave the way past even the stubborn defence block for scoring. His splendid defence splitting passes carved open opposition defences. The overlapping ace striker of the team often launched dangerous assaults on target and as the opportunity arose effortlessly slotted the ball home with perfect placing beyond opponent’s goalkeeper. He would contribute strongly to the team’s presentable and self-respecting performance.

The midfielder of GRFC, Sudesh Gurung’s performance was critically acclaimed. The incredibly stunning play maker keeps an eye on his teammates. Before he receives the ball, he looks around to find his free team-mates. Until he finds any teammates who can get the ball for the promising move forward, he holds it up and lets his teammates go to the open space. His fine first touch allows him to keep possession of the ball and he takes time to decide where to distribute the ball for the result-oriented move. In the final match, he dribbled past the midfielders and beat the defenders for the promising moves forward. He showed natural skills for crossing the ball at striking zones for the forwards. His ability to dictate play from deep inside his half as well as his vision with the ball at his feet made him the team’s go-to-man. He had the distinction of most promising assists for the team. His ability to keep ticking things over in midfield enabled him to create successful passes. His electrifying pace coupled with his ability to seamlessly float past opponent’s defenders saw him whip in deadly balls from the by line. He made his presence felt in the matches he played. It is absolutely heartening to see the young Aussie born or grown up players coming to participate in our community tournaments. Aayam Shrestha who played for Himalayan Youth Club stimulated the team’s performances and propelled the team to victories in the matches he managed to play. Aayam, the terrific striker scored goal(s) in almost all the matches he played and proved to be a game changer and match winning in few games. He scored six goals in four games including a stunning hat-trick in one vital match for the team. The stunning and influential striker has always been threatening and that can have a big say for the team. He collected the assists of the teammates intelligently and dribbled past the defenders very effortlessly and confidently to make the way towards the open striking zone. Having great sense of timing, he usually made the right decision if to keep for themselves for forward move or release for the greater result. The iconic players in own right have been playing with fair balance, strength, enduring power and pace. He has uncommon skills of carrying the ball forward, creatively hitting at the target and distributing ball with intelligence are inspiring. Using the hard earned techniques, pace and movement, he performed for the team and established himself as quality finisher. He has been playing impressively in The National Premier League 2016 (U 16), Australia. The other two exceptionally promising footballers of Nepalese heritage creating significant ripples in the prestigious league are Pratik Napit, (U 15), and Bhusal (U14), the pride of our community. Trust your instincts and do not be afraid to think big.
