IT Cup is a major inter-state event that celebrates the community spirit in the glorious tradition of the Free-Age and Veteran’s (35+) annual soccer championship. The prestigious tournament was organised by the deservedly admired, esteemed and reputed Yeti Football Club, Melbourne. It has added one feather to its cap. It appropriately and magnificently offered a range of exciting possibilities for the football aspirants to sharpen and develop their skills and promote social unity through the most played game in our society.

16 youth teams and 8 veterans’ teams enthusiastically participated in the two-day long championship, MIT Cup 2015, held in March. All teams were competent and played competitively with their maximum sincere efforts. They played splendidly. More importantly they displayed every possible gentle game playing self-assuredly. They were able to showcase all their talents within the limited time frame of the match. The community will surely get more significant mileage out of the promising sporting fete like this and its contribution to our milieu is worthwhile. Someone perhaps rightly argued that the history of sports is history of the individual flair of the legendary sportsmen and team. MIT also saw some fairly heroic figures who heightened the profile of our football culture. The exceptionally well-organised and positively absorbing tournament has been on the way to

In the face of stiff competition, they were able to finish third. Gyanendra Sitaula, the manager of TRG put, ‘The actual spirit in the group is growing stronger with each passing match. When we get some consistent results we can push on. We have to believe we can win the title. Once we succeed to overcome the crisis of confidence in our defence area, we can match any side.’ Umesh Katuwal, the stopper of GRFC was adjudged as the ‘man-of-the-tournament’. His strengths were reading the game properly and marking the players with intelligent positioning. He sparingly and coolly tackled opposing players and applied the best possible defensive techniques to prevent the other team from

The decider in free-age category between Granville Rhino Football Club (GRFC), Sydney and United Football Club (UFC), Melbourne was nervy match of high quality. In the match, well-known as the ultimate showdown between NSW and Victoria, either team could have gone ahead in the match. In the open match, the star players from both sides created plenty of chances exploiting every energy and spirit. With killing pace and tremendous stamina and glistering speed, each team fired across the face of the opponent’s goal post. Both came within an ace of victory but the two arguably best goalkeepers playing as the general of the defense, Manij Hada of UFC and Ganesh Godar of GRFC, strong and agile athletes, denied the strikers’ persistent attacks. It was an all-out attack from both sides from the kick-off time. Blistering attacks of the sharp strikers, Ashish Shrestha, Bikash Sapkota, Rajesh Shrestha, Vivek Gurung etc. from GRFC and Ekjan Tuladhar,Suraj Shrestha etc. from UFC were foiled defensively from both sides. shooting at the frame and boldly blocked it. He cleared the ball timely and intelligently made strong challenge to the opposing players when required. He could unleash the header very effortlessly and applied direct pressure on the players. He was an impact player who could surpassingly dictate the match capable of contributing to the team’s free flowing forward movement. He acted as option for midfielders and defenders. Though he played less physical game, he could match the strikers’ speed and push the offensive players off the ball. He had good understanding with the centre back and the goalkeeper. He moved in coordination with players in midfield and flanks. Always a fine communicator, he set lovely offside trap. Ashish Shrestha, a prolific scorer, was rewarded the ‘Golden Boot’ in Free-Age group. The GRFC lethal striker, with killer instinct, sprinted past the defenders even in the face of their stubborn block and scored winning goals for the team to pave the way to the final. His result-oriented upfront-focussed football had been a great asset for the team. Looking

Ganesh Godar, the gloveman of GRFC was rewarded ‘Golden Glove’ in Free-Age category. The strong leaper at the goal post had good and determined hands to protect the goal. He stole the thunder from the one favourite title contender. Being always in the relaxed frame of mind, he created positive vibes for the team. With signature confidence he caught the aerial balls crossed towards six yards box, knocked away the long ranging shots very comfortably and saved many balls shot from even the point blank range. He stayed cool, calm and composed even under a huge pressure and did not concede a goal in the championship. He posed to cover the goal area when facing a one-on-one encounter. He took the calculated risk when crisis loomed large. UFC head coach Buddha Maharjan stated, “Today GRFC delivered very impressively and we met tough challenges in each department. Some of the games do not go the way we would have liked but we believe in improving our standard and that is a great quality to have. Sometimes we fail to play along the mental side of the game.’ The nail biting 35 + category decider between stars studded MFC and ParraPark FC was undeniably riveting. The keenly contested match was a borderline case. Both teams, replete with tested and proven players, mounted the strings of attacks using the right fuel right from the beginning. ParraFC underwent tough time to penetrate the defensive set up well-constructed by Ishwor Pahari as the stopper, Raju Manandhar as the central defender and Ramesh Gurung, Bijay Chetri as the side defenders. ParraFC found difficult to handle the speedy, organized, physically and technically dominant opposition MFC which was in sparkling form. They hardly allowed the opposing players strike unopposed at the goal.
MIT’S ‘Man-of-the-championship’. , was the vitally driving force behind the team’s competently dazzling performance. The play maker showed exceeding calibre in creating through balls and slick passing. Rohit Thakali, the reputedly distinguished captain of the youth wing of MFC and the de facto head coach and the match strategist of MFC Veterans’ team argued, “The senior boys played ardently up to their standard and they will keep on playing with the same pace and rhythm in the tournaments ahead.” In the Semis, MFC’S Sudin Pradhan’s 18 yards left footer long ranger from the left side of the D box, had been the match winning masterstroke. The goal, super finish, was one of the best in the tournament. Nothing short of a spectacular! Rajesh Limbu, the recipient of ‘Golden Boot’ and ‘man-of-the-tournament’ was a terrific scorer who attempted pretty imposing frontline assaults powered by the prominent midfielder Anish Pradhan and energized by the effectively creative midfielder Amit Aryal and all the way build-up generated by the reliably dominant stopper Biswas Bhattarai. He ran with the ball at the point of every attacking position and hit the mark. His uncommon shooting skill established him as a match winner in the semis and the league stage. Niraj Shrestha, an experienced and self-motivated custodian of MFC +35 was rewarded ‘Golden Glove’. He performed elegantly all through the tournament. His grip on the ball was very convincing so is the art of punching away the ball. He avoided the goal keeping errors as much as possible. He did not concede even a single goal during the championship. He made some good reaction saves and great blocks. He maintained technical efficiency even under pressure. His high concentration levels and art of intimidating the approaching rival strikers proved the difference in the team winning the title. Saint George Nepalese Club (SGNC), Sydney, was easily the hot title favourite in both categories. Both outfits were full of star players and their delivery of individual sparks passed the excitement through the crowd mainly the home supporters consisting of
encouraging ladies apparelled smartly in club jerseys. It enhanced its good reputation for fair play and noble sportsmanship spirit. Minus the title, it was a phenomenally successful tournament and pleasant experience for them. They deservedly won ‘Fair Play Award’. Senior player, Chandra aka Kalay Gurung aptly told that they were on a soccer-pilgrimage in Melbourne with the family-like team. Their socializing team work was worthy of respect and appreciation and they had been consistent of high standards with the leading quality through example. The celebrity sport journalist Hemanta Kafle, the active witness of virtually all the matches remarked, ’20 mins’ match cannot fairly determine the quality of a for the natural development of soccer, there should be at least 40 mins’ match. Smashing and cracking MFC, the Defending Champion in Free-Age Category, was unlucky to proceed to the knockout round despite their spellbinding performance and players with star qualities. He had been sharing his experience of playing for U 19 Nepalese team and ANFA Academy Nepal with our soccer enthusiasts. The influential play maker occupies the centre stage in almost all matches. In 35+ category, the tournament missed the sparks of the classy players and genius game changers like Dinesh Amatya from SGFC and Bijen Bataju and Santosh Gurung from MFC etc. The event is over; memory lingers on and special memories are always cherish able.
