Kia has picked up four awards at the industry-focused 2025 Fleet News Awards, including Zero Emission Manufacturer of the Year, as well as Best Mid-size SUV, Best Medium Car and Best Large SUV for the Kia EV3, EV6 and EV9, respectively.
Despite intense competition in each sector, four Kia cars were shortlisted for awards this year, with Kia UK also named a finalist for two manufacturer awards, including the inaugural year for Fleet News’ Zero Emission Manufacturer of the Year Award:
• Best Medium Car: new Kia EV6 and Kia Niro
• Best Mid-size SUV: Kia EV3
• Best Large SUV: Kia EV9
• Zero Emission Manufacturer of the Year (NEW): Kia UK
• Fleet Manufacturer of the Year –Car (reader voted): Kia UK
Announced at a prestigious awards
ceremony in London, the Fleet News Awards celebrate the best in fleet suppliers, companies, vehicles and people, with awards judged by its readers.
Kia reached more than 112,000 annual sales for the first time in 2024, making it the fourth bestselling car brand in the UK. Kia has continued to grow sustainably, aided by strong demand across its model line-up, particularly with fleet customers who accounted for around 60% of sales last year.
In the 2024 and 2023 Fleet News Awards, the Kia Niro won the ‘Best Lower Medium Car’ award two years in a row thanks to its versatility and appealing electrified powertrains.
Designed to keep fleet and business customers mobile, the Kia Business Service Promise was first introduced in late 2022, to offer
business customers the best service and maintenance from across the Kia dealer network. The service includes Kia Dealer servicing at competitive rates; fixed-price repairs; Kia Business Care Service Plans; access to a cost of ownership and SMR system; improved mobility and residual values. Find out more here: https://www.kia.com/uk/business/ service-promise/
Fleets looking to go electric can do so by taking out a 48-hour test drive in a Kia EV6 or Niro EV – delivered and collected directly at the business address for added convenience. The service offers customers the chance to experience the benefits of fully electric cars, which include lower running costs, low Benefit-in-Kind tax, and low whole-life costs. https:// www.kia.com/uk/business/48hourtest-drive/
The Kia EV3 has been named ‘UK Car of the Year 2025’. The award follows EV3 topping the ‘Small Crossover’ category on 20 February, which automatically shortlisted the brand’s latest EV for the overall prize of ‘UK Car of the Year 2025’.
The UK Car of the Year Awards are an independent set of awards, voted for by a 31-strong jury of industry experts, working across the UK on automotive, business and tech publications. The EV3’s success follows in the footsteps of its larger sibling, the EV9, which took home the trophies for ‘Large Crossover’ and overall ‘UK Car of the Year’ in last year’s awards.
Paul Philpott, President & CEO of Kia UK, commented: “We’re delighted to once again be victorious winning the outright UK Car of the Year Award with EV3. This follows our success in 2024 with EV9. These consecutive awards clearly demonstrate Kia’s strong leadership in electrification, the genuine demand from UK customers and the quality of our product line up. With this outstanding recognition and our increasing order bank, we and our
dealer partners are confident EV3 will continue being a popular and accessible choice for the growing number of people switching to electric.”
John Challen, Co-chairman of the UK Car of the Year Awards: “With this car, Kia has successfully grown its EV portfolio, following the success of the EV6 and the UK Car of the Year 2024, the EV9. Securing back-
to-back successes in this competition has only been achieved once before, which shows the outstanding attributes and appeal of the Kia EV3, which emerged victorious from a strong field of finalists. The specification, driving range and distinctive interior and exterior styling are just three EV3 elements that impressed our panel of experts.”
This recognition continues the EV3s string of success since its launch at the end of 2024, having also being named a finalist for European Car of the Year and a finalist for the 2025 World Car Awards, with the final three nominees due to be announced later in March.
The EV3 is Kia’s newest EV on sale in the UK and represents the next step in the company’s ‘Plan S’ strategy. With a range of up to 375 miles on a single charge the Kia EV3 ( 58.3kWH Air 201bhp Auto ) is available on business contract hire from £344 per month after an initial payment of £2064both excluding VAT.
BMW Group UK is celebrating another successful year at the 2024 Business Car Awards, with BMW retaining the coveted Fleet Manufacturer of the Year title for a third consecutive year. Boasting more options for fleets than ever before, MINI also came out on top as the all-new MINI Cooper garners two wins, including overall Business Car of the Year. A further three accolades were awarded across the product portfolio, with BMW i4, BMW 5 Series and BMW X1 each topping their respective categories.
On presenting the headline award, Martyn Collins, Editor, Business Car Magazine said, “With its model range growing again this year, especially from the MINI side, BMW has its most complete offering ever for fleet and continues to build on
its strong record – particularly with EVs. Support for company car drivers is equally impressive, with further innovations for its ‘Corporate Certified’ programme, aimed at improving the retailer experience.”
All-new MINI Cooper crowned overall Business Car of the Year.
Launched earlier this year and offered with a choice of either an all-electric or combustion-engine powertrain, the all-new MINI Cooper prevailed at this year’s Business Car Awards, topping the small car class before clinching overall Business Car of the Year.
Judges praised the model’s “simplified styling”, “high-tech, retro-influenced interior” and the “excellent” 250-mile range, with Business Car commenting, “This year the MINI Hatch – now called
the Cooper – received a high-tech makeover, but its premium feel remains unchanged, and whether you choose ICE or EV power, all are great to drive. Add this all up, with the Electric version’s credible range, and this is an attractive small car package that will really appeal to fleet.”
With the launch of the new MINI family the brand has introduced a compelling fleet offering for a range of market segments. In addition to the MINI Cooper, the larger MINI Countryman Electric and forthcoming all-electric MINI Aceman both provide an impressive single-charge range of up to 287* and 252 miles* respectively.
The entire MINI lineup boasts a high level of standard equipment, including a state-of-the-art circular
OLED display, sustainable interior materials, and all-new MINI Experience Modes. Company car buyers can also take advantage of a low benefit-in-kind (BIK) tax rate of 2 per cent across the all-electric model range.
BMW i4, 5 Series and X1 each top their respective class.
Recently refreshed with new design details, revised headlights and optional Laserlight tail lights, the BMW i4 continues to impress almost three years after its original debut, receiving the award for Best Premium Car. Commenting on the win, Business Car said, “Despite more EV and ICE-powered rivals, none can still touch the BMW i4. Whether you go for the eDrive 35, or the range-topping M50, the excellent electric range is trustworthy, it oozes driver appeal, and it’s practical with
Continuing its impressive 2024 winning streak, the BMW 5 Series retains the top spot as Business Car’s Best Executive Car for the fifth consecutive year. On presenting the gong, judges said, “The replacement for the last 5 Series had big shoes
to fill, but whether you choose EV, PHEV, or ICE power, the i5/5 Series remains our executive pick. It looks great inside and out, there’s the additional choice of Touring estate versions, and all offer a keen drive.”
Rounding up the awards, the third generation BMW X1 solidifies its position as Business Car’s Best Premium Medium SUV, securing the title for the second year running. Judges described the model as “an attractive package” with a “spacious interior”, “willing performance” and “a great drive, plus the accomplished range for EV and plug-in versions equals low running costs.”
Reflecting on BMW Group’s success at this year’s awards, Matt Collins, General Manager, Corporate Sales BMW Group UK, said, “We are incredibly proud to retain Business Car’s Fleet Manufacturer of the Year title for a third consecutive year. This is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the Corporate Sales team, who continue to strive for excellence in serving the evolving needs of our corporate customers. We’re equally delighted by the recognition MINI has received at this year’s awards – it’s a real honour for the MINI Cooper to be crowned overall Business Car of the Year. The additional four category wins really are the icing on the cake.”
The Fiat 500 and Fiat Panda will be the fi rst FCA models to adopt the group’s new hybrid technology. The new 500 Mild Hybrid and Panda Mild Hybrid will make hybrid technology accessible to all, arriving in UK showrooms from February and March 2023 respectively.
Both models provide all the benefits of efficient, compact, lightweight and accessible hybrid driving. For the last 120 years, Fiat has been a pioneer in technology and an innovator in mobility. Now, it looks to more sustainable mobility.
2023 marks a new milestone in the history of Fiat. The electrification of the brand will begin with the launch of the new mild hybrid versions of the Fiat 500 and the Panda and will continue with the start of production of the new 500 in its spiritual home of Turin. This model will be 100 per cent electric and will therefore play a key role in the FCA e-Mobility strategy.
The 500 and Panda will be available with a new petrol mild hybrid engine that combines the latest 3-cylinder FireFly 1.0-litre engine family with a 12-volt BSG electric motor and a lithium battery that delivers 70hp (51kW).
Compared to the outgoing
1.2-litre 69hp petrol engine, the mild hybrid version improves fuel efficiency, reducing CO2 emissions on the road by up to 30 per cent without impeding performance. It also ensures a very high standard of driving comfort thanks to the BSG system, allowing for a quiet, vibration-free restart of the internal combustion engine in Stop&Start mode.
The new 1.0-litre, 3-cylinder engine has a peak power output of 70hp (51kW) at 6,000rpm and peak torque of 92Nm at 3,500rpm. The cylinder head has two valves per cylinder and a single camshaft with continuous variable valve timing (the timing is chain-driven). The structure includes a compact combustion chamber, high-tumble intake ducts and external Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR), providing a remarkably high compression ratio (12:1), which translates into better thermal efficiency. The crankcase, developed in collaboration with Teksid, is made of high-pressure diecast aluminium alloy with cast-iron cylinder liners, to reduce start-up times and contain the weight of the engine to just 77kg. Additionally, friction is reduced using a crank mechanism with a bore/stroke
ratio of 1.24 and a connecting rod/ crank device with a 10mm offset to maximise efficiency.
The BSG system is mounted directly on the engine and is operated by the belt that also drives the auxiliaries. The system recovers energy during braking and deceleration, stores it in a lithium battery with a capacity of 11Ah, and uses it, at a maximum power of 3,600W, to restart the engine in Stop&Start mode and to assist it during acceleration.
This technology allows the internal combustion engine to switch off by shifting into neutral, even at speeds below 18mph. The dashboard, which displays information on the hybrid system, prompts the driver when to shift.
The mild hybrid propulsion unit used in the Panda and 500 receives a 6-gear manual transmission (transverse gearbox, front-wheel drive), aimed at improving fuel economy in out-of-town driving, thanks to new low-friction bearings and gaskets and the use of a specific high-efficiency lubricant. The new system also involves lowering the entire power unit 45mm so the car behaves better on the road thanks to the lower centre of gravity.

When it comes to all-round realworld usability, Toyota has the best small and medium vans on the market, according to What Car? which has today named Proace and Proace City as “best for practicality” class winners its first van awards.
It’s a comprehensive success for the models, which cover the most competitive segments in the market. Going beyond a capacious load space and high payload, both offer an ingenious Smart Cargo system which extends carrying capacity for longer items through the bulkhead with a folding passenger seat mechanism. Smart Cargo is provided as standard on all new Proace vans and is available as an option or standard, according to equipment grade, on Proace City.
Commenting on the award for Proace, Steve Huntingford, What Car? Editor, said: “Our judges selected the Proace because the practical nature of a van extends beyond the vehicle’s simple shell.”
He added that practicality “goes beyond the load space,” drawing attention to the lay-out of the “comfortable” cabin and the availability of “clever tech” options that can help reduce driver fatigue
and take some of the stress out of driving.
Turning to Proace City, Huntingford said: “This van can carry almost 4m3, with payloads up to 1,000kg… and it has the longest load length of any vehicle in its class. Further upticks follow because you can have your vehicle in a variety of sizes, with standard or long wheelbase options.”
Stuart Ferma, General Manager Toyota and Lexus Fleet Sales, said: “Proace and Proace City are central to the scope and appeal of our Toyota Professional LCV range, so it is very rewarding to see their designed-in practicality being rewarded by What Car? Together these models cover a wide span of business customer needs, answering not just the requirements for carrying capability, but for being safe, efficient, comfortable and reliable, too.”

CARDIFFCARDIFF
The Toyota Proace City has been awarded the Compact Van of the Year title in the coveted What Van? Awards, announced at a virtual event yesterday (9 December).
Launched on the UK market in March this year and already on its third award, Proace City boasts a load volume of up to 4.4m3, payload capacity of up to one tonne and can tow braked loads of up to 1.5 tonnes. The optional Smart Cargo system creates even more load space and allows for longer items to be carried with ease.
Proace City’s 1.5-litre powertrains are highly efficient, in terms of both fuel economy and CO2 emissions –performance which contributes to a strong cost-of-ownership profile.
Equipment specifications are tailored for practicality and convenience, with a cab that can also double as a mobile office when business needs to happen on the move.
Commenting on the win, James Dallas, What Van? Editor, said, “Having joined the proven PSA Group platform for the production of its debut compact van, Toyota has jumped straight to the top of the class with the Proace City. It comes with a five-year warranty and fiveyear roadside assistance and is set to command outstanding residual values.”
Stuart Ferma, General Manager Toyota and Lexus Fleet Sales, said, “The addition of Proace City to our light commercial vehicle range has
brought Toyota into the second largest segment of the UK LCV market and strengthened the Toyota Professional branding we gave to our LCV range earlier in the year. With more than two thirds of Toyota retailers already signed up to the Professional programme we can offer more customers higher levels of service and expertise across the country.”
All Toyota Professional commercial vehicles come with a fiveyear/100,000 mile manufacturer warranty along with five-year’s roadside assistance. In addition, a convenient servicing commitment guarantees an appointment within seven days or a reduction of 50 per cent off the labour charge if this timescale cannot be met.

When it comes to a pick-up that’s right for the job, looking the part simply isn’t enough: you need muscle to match the looks. The new Toyota Hilux is strengthening its appeal with a new, more powerful 2.8-litre engine that maintains its reputation as one of the most competitive and capable models in its segment.
The new engine leads a series of technical, dynamic, styling and equipment upgrades for the worldfamous “go-anywhere” Hilux. It powers new top-of-the-range Invincible X and (in addition to the current 2.4 unit) Invincible Double Cab models and is available with a choice of automatic or manual transmission.
The DOHC 16-valve 2,755cc turbodiesel unit generates 201bhp/150kW at 3,400rpm. Maximum torque is 500Nm with a sixspeed automatic transmission, available between 1,600 and 2,800rpm. With manual transmission, the figure is 420Nm, delivered between 1,400 and 3,400rpm.
There’s a significant improvement
in performance compared to Hilux’s established 2.4-litre unit, with 0-62mph acceleration reduced by 2.1 seconds to 10.7 seconds (automatic version). Despite the engine’s larger capacity and higher output, there is only a modest difference in fuel and emissions efficiency: official WLTP combined cycle data shows 28.5 – 30.0mpg and 246 – 259g/ km with automatic transmission; 31.3 – 33.2mpg and 224 – 236g/km with manual transmission.
New Hilux maintains its one-tonne payload capacity and the ability to tow (braked) loads of up to 3.5 tonnes.
The key to this strong balance of performance and efficiency is design and engineering details throughout the engine’s construction. These include an optimised combustion chamber shape, pistons and piston rings, a DLC (diamond-like carbon) coating on the piston rings and slowing of the combustion gas flow to reduce cooling losses.
There is also a two-stage oil pump that can change the oil pressure
as required, reducing the pump driving force when the engine is cold or operating under light loads and the friction caused by early piston warmup.
The exhaust gas recirculation section of the intake manifold is designed to suppress variation in the gas and intake efficiency has been improved by dispensing with the swirl control valve. Further measures have adjusted catalyst capacity and performance to ensure compliance with Euro 6d emissions regulations.
The engine is quieter, too, with less vibration thanks to detailed adjustment to the shape of the intake manifold and the catalytic converter’s insulator.
New Hilux continues to offer the option of the successful 148bhp/110kW 2.4-litre turbodiesel unit fitted with a fuel and emissions-reducing stop-start system (excepting the entry level Active grade).
The new Toyota Hilux is available to order now with customer deliveries from late November.

Mercedes-Benz Vans UK Ltd has enhanced the capabilities of its class-leading connectivity system, Mercedes PRO connect, with the addition of two new services –Remote Access and Digital Drivers’ Log.
Remote Vehicle Access means that a driver assigned to a vehicle can lock and unlock the vehicle and operate the optional auxiliary heater (if fitted) from anywhere in the world. This allows packages to be dropped off to the load compartment, for example, even if the driver is not with the vehicle. In addition, the driver is able to set the vehicles’ optional auxiliary heater. If the keys are locked in the vehicle, they can also now be retrieved more easily. It also offers improved antitheft protection, as unlocked vehicle doors are noticed, flagged on the system, and can be remotely locked again.
Digital Driver’s Log enables journey logs to be generated into an exportable PDF fi le that can be kept for company records, or can be used to assist vehicle managers or administrators in calculating personal versus business mileage and a complete record of all journeys. This enables more efficient working procedures, as tedious and error-prone manual entries in a journey log are no longer necessary.
Since the introduction of Mercedes PRO connect with the latest generation of the Sprinter in June 2018, Mercedes-Benz Vans has connected 9,500 new Sprinter vehicles in the UK, giving customers greater security, safety and efficiency benefits.
Mercedes PRO connect constantly updates itself, giving customers new features and benefits up to every six months. In 2019, Mercedes-Benz Vans added Drive Style monitoring
and electric mobility services to Mercedes PRO connect. Further new features to the system in the past six months also included realtime variable servicing monitoring, parking time monitor and additional geo-fence options.
Steve Bridge, Managing Director, Mercedes-Benz Vans UK Ltd, said: “We are committed to enhancing the value our connected vehicle services that we offer to our customers to help keep their businesses moving. We don’t want to introduce gimmicks; we truly believe that these digital services will add genuine value to the van community and provide small ways to give them one less thing to think about. As is always the case too, we welcome feedback from van drivers and operators about their use of Mercedes PRO connect and any ideas of what they would like to see developed, so that we can continue to provide the most innovative solution for this hard working community.”
Mercedes-Benz Vans is offering these new digital services for all vehicles activated after 13.01.2023. All Mercedes PRO connect services including the newly released ‘Remote Access’ and ‘Digital Drivers Log’ are now included free of charge, for three years. MercedesBenz Vans is also working on an update to remotely retrofit the software to previously connected vehicles, to allow all eligible customers to benefit from these exciting updates, which should be available by the end of Q1 2023.

Tool thefts continue to strain UK businesses, with 1 in 5 (19%) van drivers falling victim to theft last year, according to Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles research.1
While an improvement on the number of van drivers reporting incidents of tool theft year-on-year2, a Freedom of Information request revealed that as many as 15,464 individual cases were reported to police forces across the UK3, confirming the ongoing prevalence of the issue.
With the research indicating that the average value of stolen equipment per van stands at over £1,7001, this means that UK tradespeople are facing a bill of up to £1.64 billion in stolen equipment.4
In spite of these risks, 41% of UK van drivers continue to leave equipment in their vehicles overnight – over a third (37%) of whom confess that the value of tools left in their van
exceeds £2,000.
The impact of tool thefts on UK businesses stretches beyond replacing equipment, though, with the majority (57%) of respondents unable to work while their vans are re-stocked and locks repaired1, as well as further risk of an increase in future insurance premiums for van owners who are on the receiving end of tool theft.
With downtime costing companies an estimated £550 a day per van, at a time when UK businesses are already feeling the squeeze, these costs underscore the significant disruption that tool theft can bring.
To help van drivers protect their vehicles, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles offers a range of solutions designed to keep their van secure.
The all-electric ID. Buzz Cargo is fitted with an anti-theft alarm system as standard, in addition to interior monitoring in the cab, a back-up horn and towing protection5. When
activated, the anti-theft alarm system sounds the horn and activates the hazard lights, alerting bypassers to any unwelcome intrusion.
John Ricardo-Neto, Head of Product Planning at Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, said: “The cost of theft is more than just the price of the tools stolen, it’s the downtime while van drivers replace the stolen equipment, the higher insurance premiums and lost revenues, so it’s imperative that UK tradespeople be vigilant to tool theft.
“We urge those who own expensive equipment to take extra precautions – securing or removing tools overnight and parking in a well-lit, CCTV-monitored area. For those who wish to further increase the security of their vehicles, our range of theft prevention technologies can offer extra protection, allowing van drivers to get back to focusing on their businesses.”
The BMW 1 Series, a pioneer offering unmatched driving pleasure in the premium compact segment, is now entering its fourth model generation. With a new and dynamic design presence, a completely revised drive portfolio and extensively improved chassis technology, the new BMW 1 Series has sharpened its profile as the sportiest vehicle in the competitive environment. Featuring highly efficient engines, including those with 48-volt mild hybrid technology, and a resourceconserving production process, the new model improves sustainability across its entire product life cycle. Its progressive character is also reflected in the redesigned interior, an extended range of automated driving and parking systems, the new BMW iDrive with QuickSelect and innovative digital services based on BMW Operating System 9.
The premiere of the new BMW 1 Series marks the start of a new chapter in the model’s 20-year success story. Like its predecessor, the new generation model will also be produced at BMW Group Plant Leipzig, with the first UK customer deliveries in October 2024. The new BMW 1 Series is priced from £29,950 (RRP) and available to order at BMW Retailers across the UK from today.
The sporty appearance of the BMW 1 Series in its fourth generation is underscored by typical BMW proportions: a long bonnet, a passenger cell set well back, a dynamically flowing roofline and a powerful rear design. The dimensions of the five-door model have changed only slightly compared to its predecessor. The exterior length of the new BMW 1 Series has increased by 42 millimetres to 4,361 millimetres, while the wheelbase is 2,670 millimetres. The vehicle width is 1,800 millimetres, while the height has increased by 25 millimetres to 1,459
millimetres.
With a strikingly flat front end that sits significantly lower to the road than its predecessor, the new BMW 1 Series signals its sporty character more than ever. The wide, forward-leaning BMW radiator grille features an innovative structure comprised of vertical and diagonal bars. The standard-fit LED headlights feature striking vertical elements for the daytime running light and the turn indicators. Audi is opening the next chapter in its successful history in the midsize segment with the new A5 family. Launching 30 years after the first Audi A4, the sharpened design language of the latest generation, now called the Audi A5, captivates with striking proportions. Both body styles, Saloon and Avant, perfectly embody the sporty essence of Audi’s design philosophy. A new interior design language creates a feeling of space and places the displays on a digital stage. The new operating concept increases interaction with the vehicle. Efficient, partially electrified combustion engines and thrilling S models round off the range.
With the expansion of its model range, AUDI AG has restructured the naming of its vehicles since 2024. The numbers in the names of electric and combustion-engine models are the differentiators. Going forward, even numbers stand for electrically powered models, odd numbers for vehicles with combustion engines. With the debut of the latest generation, the Audi A4, a long-standing bestseller, will be called the Audi A5 and will be produced in Neckarsulm. It is offered in four new variants: as the A5 and S5 Saloon and as the A5 and S5 Avant. These are the first models to be launched on the Premium Platform Combustion (PPC).
Audi CEO Gernot Döllner on the new model family: “In tandem with the expansion of our all-electric portfolio, we are launching a new generation of models with efficient combustion engines. The Audi A5 family with its athletic design, completely new interior and future-proof electronics architecture will be the first. The advanced MHEV plus technology enables partially electric driving and therefore even more efficient driving.”
The new models are growing
in length and width. Audi is also expanding the amount of standard equipment, positioning the new Audi A5 in the upper mid-size segment. The new user experience based on the 1.2 version of the E³ electronic architecture matches this aspiration.
Even at first glance, the completely redesigned A5 family has a powerful and clean design. The modified proportions with a long wheelbase, large wheels and the low, sporty body embody progressive dynamism and premium standards. In the Saloon, the sporty, compact-looking greenhouse stretches to the rear in a sweeping arc, flows seamlessly into the shallow rear window in a coupé-like manner, and ends at the visually short tailgate with a striking spoiler lip.
The rear hatch, which is new in this vehicle segment, offers a convincing symbiosis of design and functionality. It opens with the rear window and its size makes access to the luggage compartment considerably easier. This results in a completely new Saloon concept for Audi. In the Avant, the dynamic, taut roofline merges into a seamlessly integrated roof spoiler that spans the sporty, flat rear window. The D-pillars, which are steeply raked, emphasize the dynamic side view of the A5 Avant.
The front is dominated by the wide and significantly flatter proportioned Singleframe with a three-dimensional honeycomb structure. Together with the slim and precisely drawn headlights, it shapes the face of the vehicle and gives it a striking and focused expression. Thanks to the “soft nose” integrated into the bumper, the hood is flush with the front end. The blisters protruding powerfully from the shoulder area at the front and rear wheels are reminiscent of the Audi
Ur quattro and a core element of the Audi design DNA.
The striking, distinctive rear combines sporty, emotional design and intelligent technology. The three dimensional, offset light strip gives the rear of the new Audi A5 presence and visual dynamism. Further highlights of the rear view in the base models are the clear, modern design of the bumper with a dark diffuser and the highquality rectangular exhaust tips.
The Audi A5 family offers digital daytime running lights with LED technology at the front and second-
generation digital OLED rear lights at the rear (S5 only in UK). With around 60 segments per digital OLED panel, they are increasingly becoming a display at the rear of the vehicle on the S5. This enables car-to-x communication and increases safety on the road - for example with the new communication light. The dynamic lighting effects when unlocking and leaving the vehicle reflect the aesthetics of movement as part of the Audi light DNA. The active digital light signature does so too, conveying a new sense of liveliness. The headlights are three dimensional in look and offer digital light signatures on Edition 1 and S5 models in the UK, while the rear light digital sigatures are available on the S5 only.
The design of the interior of the new Audi A5 is based on four characteristic features. Firstly, the interior has a human-centric design, i.e., it is consistently geared towards the needs of its users. The second special feature is the Digital Stage that establishes itself in clear view of the driver and front passenger in the form of the Audi MMI displays. With its Material Driven Design, the Audi A5 meets the requirement for a generous sense of space with a high level of comfort. The clear layout and easy operation of the interior provide an overview in all situations to form the fourth feature: Visual Clarity. Added to this is the optional dynamic interaction light (standard on S5) to support the car's interaction with the occupants.
The new operating concept of the Audi A5 family increases interaction with the vehicle thanks to the E³ electronic architecture. The new Audi A5 integrates seamlessly into our customers’ digital ecosystem and offers a personal connectivity experience. The slim, free-standing Audi MMI panoramic display has a curved design and uses OLED technology. It consists of the Audi virtual cockpit with a 11.9-inch visible screen diagonal and the 14.5-inch MMI touch display. Audi complements the digital stage for the front passengers with the 10.9inch MMI front passenger display (available on Edition 1 spec), which is perfectly integrated into the dashboard design. The new A5 has an optional, configurable head-up display that has
been further developed compared to its predecessor (standard on S5). For the first time, drivers now have the option of controlling vehicle and infotainment functions via the head-up display.
The new MHEV plus system based on a 48-volt on-board electrical system supports the combustion engine and reduces CO2 emissions while increasing performance. The powertrain generator (PTG) enables electric driving components that contribute to a reduction in fuel consumption.
The new MHEV plus system enables significant advantages in CO2 emissions and fuel consumption in the Audi A5 model series compared to an MHEV system. These total up to 10 g/ km CO2 in the 2.0 TDI (204PS, frontwheel drive/quattro) and up to 17 g/ km CO2 in the V6 3.0 TFSI (367PS, quattro) in the WLTP driving cycle*.
The PTG can also add up to 24PS of electric power to the output of the combustion engine. When decelerating, the PTG feeds energy back into the battery (recuperation) at up to 25 kW. As a result, purely electric manoeuvring and parking are possible to a limited extent. Thanks to the option of using an electric air conditioning compressor, the air conditioning system can also be operated when the vehicle is stopped at traffic lights and the combustion engine is switched off. With the integrated and blending-capable
brake control system (iBRS), the brake pedal and the brake hydraulics can be completely decoupled. In models with the MHEV plus system, for example, it achieves the necessary deceleration without using the friction brakes thanks to regenerative braking. This means that deceleration is initially achieved solely by recuperation. The friction brakes only kick in when the brake pedal is pressed harder. The brake feel remains unaffected by this.
The efficient engines in the Audi A5 family cover a wide range: from the conventionally powered entrylevel model to the comfortable long-distance runner and the dynamic sports car. The packages of engines, transmissions, the degree of electrification and type of drivetrain are geared towards the expectations of our customers.
The entry-level engine is a 2.0 TFSI with 150PS. Sitting above this, the same engine is available with an output of 204 PS. The turbo four-cylinder is available with a dual-clutch gearbox and both power outputs are frontwheel drive only in the UK.
This TFSI engine is equipped with a turbocharger with variable turbine geometry (VTG) and works with a modified combustion process that is particularly fuel-efficient under partial load. VTG technology enables a consistent and agile build-up of torque even at low engine speeds in petrol engines.
The 2.0 TDI with 204PS sets new standards in the A5 thanks to its MHEV plus technology. This twolitre engine from the EA288 evo generation inherits the optimized combustion from its predecessor thanks to the cylinder pressure sensor, TwinDosing for exhaust emission control and two balance shafts for smooth engine operation. It delivers 400Nm of torque between 1,750 and 3,250 rpm. The 2.0 TDI is available with a dual-clutch gearbox and frontwheel drive or with quattro ultra. To increase efficiency and comfort, the engine is partially electrified using the new 48-volt MHEV plus system.
The electrified drivetrain components reduce CO2 emissions thanks to high recuperation performance. In addition, the comfort of the TDI is further enhanced by a 48-volt starter generator for a smooth engine start. The reaction time when starting off is reduced and the car is noticeably more agile.
The S5 is a sports car powered by a 3.0-litre V6 TFSI engine with an optimized combustion process. It has a turbocharger with variable turbine geometry (VTG) and MHEV plus technology for the first time. The revised S tronic dual-clutch transmission in the Audi S5, designed for more torque, also reduces the weight on the front axle and improves agility. Partial electrification by means of the new 48-volt MHEV plus system leads to reduced CO2 emissions via electrified driving components and high recuperation performance. Compared to an S4 Saloon TDI (predecessor model), the S5 Saloon TFSI reduces CO2 emissions by up to 14 g/km. Its fast, dynamic torque build-up underlines the sportiness of the S5. The standard use of a quattro sport differential with torque vectoring in combination with an adjustable allwheel drive clutch is tuned for lateral dynamics at the highest level.

The Mercedes-Benz Sprinter has retained the Large Van of the Year honour at the Great British Fleet Awards, held 30 January 2023 in London.
Dan Gilkes, Van Fleet World Editor and one of the judges for the Great British Fleet Awards, said:
“While several players in the heavy van market have raised their game in the last 12 months, none has taken the sector further forward than Mercedes’ Sprinter. Front-wheel drive, rear-wheel drive, all-wheel drive, manual, automatic, high powered or fleet stalwart, Sprinter continues to offer a model to suit every application.
“Even in its largest form, the
big Mercedes is easy to drive, as a local delivery vehicle or a longdistance hauler. It also continues to return commendably frugal fuel figures, helping to keep total cost of ownership low.
"As mentioned last year, the biggest step that Mercedes has taken with Sprinter is in the cab, where the MBUX interface leads the way in easy to operate driver assistance technology. Factor in a growing number of Mercedes PRO telematic and fleet management solutions and the Sprinter easily retains our Best Large Van award.”
Steve Bridge, Managing Director, Mercedes-Benz Vans UK, commented: “When we say that we
keep businesses moving, we mean it; to retain Large Van of the Year thanks to Mercedes PRO connect really does highlight that we have the right products and services to support fleet owners and drivers and ensure that we do exactly that; help keep their business moving.”
Since its launch in 1995, the Sprinter has defi ned and re-defi ned a whole segment numerous times. It has notched a succession of technological ‘fi rsts’ including the ESP stability system, Crosswind Assist, the Euro VI emissions standard, COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST, Blind Spot Assist and Lane Keeping Assist, and collected more than 85 industry awards.
